Abstract:
The final chapter of the book marshals the upshot of what has come before, considering the ramifications of voluntarism about stances for how different agents should think about scientific ontology more generally. The potentially melancholy conclusion that philosophical analysis is powerless to resolve important debates concerning ontology is resisted, in favor of a more inspiring picture of the genuine insight that comes from understanding the true nature of ontological pursuits. This helps to separate questions regarding which illumination is possible from others, which amount to pseudo-problems, admitting of no genuine illumination after all. Invoking themes of Pyrrhonian skepticism regarding the peace of mind that may accompany such revelations, voluntarism about scientific ontology is presented as a transformative epistemology.

Gilson, Lucy L. Michael Lipsky,. Edited by Martin Lodge, Edward C. Page, and Steven J. Balla. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199646135.013.19.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examinesStreet-Level Bureaucracy: Dilemmas of the Individual in Public Services, a classic work by Michael Lipsky that describes what the street-level bureaucrats (SLBs) in charge of delivering public services actually do in terms of policy implementation and how their actions differ from the policy pronouncements of central-level planners. Lipsky identifies the limits of central control over SLBs’ behavior and proposes alternative strategies for holding them accountable for their actions. Before illuminating the analytic and practice relevance of street-level bureaucracy, the chapter outlines the core features of the theory of SLBs and considers its key contributions to the field of public policy analysis. In particular, it discusses how Lipsky’s book linked public administration work to public policy and political science. Finally, the chapter analyzes the nature of administrative discretion and its political consequences, as well as how SLBs can be better supported to offer public value.

Full text
Abstract:
“The Priest, the Prophetess, and the Fall of Trou Coffy” is the climactic chapter of this book because it reveals the nature of the relationship between the priest and the prophetess, Abbé Ouvière and Romaine-la-Prophétesse, and its illumination of events surrounding the fall of the Trou Coffy insurgency, including details on what might be called the Battle of Léogâne. Opening with an explanation of Abbé Ouvière’s enlistment as an adviser to the free colored Confederate Army and the plan he devised with them to pacify the Trou Coffy insurgents and bring them into the Confederate fold, the chapter details the priest’s trip to the prophetess’ lair and his meeting with Romaine, resulting in the treaty that placed the Virgin Mary’s godson in control over Léogane. It concludes with an analysis of a French commander’s arrival with troops to retake the occupied city and eventually defeat the Trou Coffy insurgency.

Abstract:
In the last three decades, gender has become an indispensable category of analysis in the study of slavery in the Americas, illuminating both the day-to-day lives of enslaved and enslaving peoples and ideas about race and slavery. While studying gender means much more than studying women, the literature on enslaved women is especially influential, in part because of gender analysis's origins in women's history and in part because of women's central importance in slavery: women and ideas about them shaped slavery from beginning to end. This article discusses the origins of slavery, the gendered division of slave labour, reproduction in slavery, sexuality, enslaved families, black femininity and masculinity, mastery and white gender identities, and politics.

Abstract:
This book brings a theorist and performers together to examine the interface of analysis and performance in music of the twentieth century. Nine case studies, of music by Ravel, Schoenberg, Bartók, Schnittke, Milhaud, Messiaen, Babbitt, Carter, and Morris, are co-authored with performers (or composers) of those works. The case studies revolve around musical structure, broadly defined to comprise relations among parts and whole created in the process of making music, whether by composers, performers, listeners, or analysts. Knowledge that is produced in the course of relating analysis and performance is conceived in three dimensions: wissen, können, and kennen. The collaborative process itself is viewed through three constructs that facilitate cross-disciplinary collaboration: shared items, shared objectives (activity objects and epistemic objects), and shared agents. The book’s collaborations “thicken” the description of analysis and performance by illuminating key issues around (a) the implicit identity of a work: the role of embodiment, the affordances of a score, the cultural understanding of notation; (b) the use of metaphor in interpretation: here metaphors of memory, of poetry, and of ritual and drama; and (c) the relation of analysis and performance itself: its antagonisms, its fusion, and—rounding out the perspectives of theorist and performer with those of composer and listener—the role of structure in audience response. Along with these broader insights, each collaboration exemplifies processes of analysis and of performance, in grappling with and interpreting particular pieces. Video performances, demonstrations, and interviews; audio recordings; and photographs partner with the book’s written text.

Burford, Mark. Mahalia Jackson’s Apollo Recordings. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190634902.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
For many, Jackson’s output for Apollo during her eight years with the label remain the most admired recordings of her career and prime exemplars of post-war gospel singing. This chapter, the first in-depth analysis of this body of work, begins with a discussion of trajectories of production, instrumental backing, and sources of Jackson’s sacred repertory at her Apollo sessions. Musically, the majority of Jackson’s gospel recordings for Apollo can been sorted according to three recurring “feels”—a “swing” feel, a “gospel” feel, and a “free” feel employed in her performance of hymns—and hybrids of these. Analysis of these recordings reveals illuminating details pertaining to Jackson’s voice and gospel performance practice.

Scott, Brent A., Fadel K. Matta, and Joel Koopman. Within-Person Approaches to the Study of Organizational Citizenship Behaviors: Antecedents, Consequences, and Boundary Conditions. Edited by Philip M. Podsakoff, Scott B. Mackenzie, and Nathan P. Podsakoff. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190219000.013.17.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter provides a review of the nascent (but growing) literature on organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) at the within-person level of analysis. We organize our review of the existing literature chronologically, discussing antecedents and consequences of within-person fluctuations in OCB. After providing a narrative review of the literature, we provide a quantitative summary of the literature via meta-analysis, summarizing the within-person relationships between OCB and its most common within-person correlates (i.e., positive affect, negative affect, job satisfaction, stressors, strain, and task performance). Looking to the future of OCB at the within-person level of analysis, we suggest that researchers can contribute to the domain by tailoring the measurement of OCB to the within-person level of analysis, better illuminating the causal direction between OCB and affect, clarifying the relationship between OCB and counterproductive work behavior at the within-person level, expanding the “dark side” of within-person OCB, exploring between-person differences in within-person OCB variability, and incorporating new theories.

Full text
Abstract:
Why did ideology come to stay as a category of political and philosophical analysis? ‘Ideology at the crossroads of theory’ shows how the illuminating ideas of a few theorists were sustained by concrete political developments. The advent of mass politics in Europe saw the consolidation of traditions of political thought such a liberalism, conservatism, and socialism. These movements and frameworks for political debate began to develop a life of their own, and these political traditions impelled individuals and groups to political action. The philosopher, Wittgenstein, played an important role in the further development of ideology.

Abstract:
This chapter provides a rhetorical analysis of “consciousness-raising hip-hop.” Merging personal stories with an encyclopedic knowledge of contemporary pop culture, it argues that a politically savvy subgenre of hip-hop artists are raising awareness about incarceration in the black community and producing effective strategies for community activism. The hip-hop movement plays an important role in illuminating the problems of the prison-industrial complex by creating spaces of prison protest and modeling sources of community care. The analysis of hip-hop focuses on the artists, music, and (life)styles that promote a type of citizen-orator that is Ciceronian in character. Particular attention is given to those hip-hop artists who fit the definition of “consciousness-raising” by providing hope to prisoners and communities working to transform the U.S. criminal-justice system.
