Dolgorouky, Cristina. Phd thesis, Université Paris Sud - Paris XI, 2012. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-00684758.

Abstract:

Turk, Deborah, and n/a. "Improving the process? A study of learner autonomy, interaction & technology-enhanced language-learning environments." University of Canberra. Languages & International Education, 2005. http://erl.canberra.edu.au./public/adt-AUC20060809.131915.

Abstract:
Is it possible for technological spaces to be created that can provide a community atmosphere one in which learners are not restrained by pre-determined syllabi and have the ability to direct their learning according to their own interests, pace and goals? If so, it would be notable to discover which kinds of interactions might be possible, or might eventuate, and how the participants in such a learning space would organize themselves. Also of interest would be the kinds of power structures that emerged through participant interaction, the direction/interactions undertaken by the participants and the improvements that could be made in order to respect and accommodate the differences between learners in a social online learning space. In order to further study this hypothesised need to investigate these questions, this researcher developed an online, English as a Second/Foreign Language learning environment for advanced adult learners of English. She reviewed the appropriate literature in order to theorise how to commence this research direction and investigated various learning platforms and software tools. The result was the development of a multiplatform environment which consisted of a content management system and a 3D microworld. Tools, exercises and content were developed and/or gathered as starting points for learners and the various software had to be learnt in order to orient others on their use. Finally, the environment was trialed over a four week duration with a group of advanced to native speakers of English (volunteers) and the results have been presented in this thesis for discussion. The trial, entitled the ILE Project, attempted to study the problems involved in the technical development of such spaces, to observe the interactions between the learners in a 3D microworld and uncover issues relating to its implementation. Some issues raised by the project concerned techno-literacy, personality-driven interaction differences and organizational power shifts within the 3D community. This thesis closes with an argument that redefines the notion of the learner autonomy, proposes certain modifications to both the pedagogic and technical structure of the online environment and discusses the issues raised in this research. The latter discussion would require further re-conceptualization of the spaces, stakes and support structures that educators can create/provide in an attempt to improve online language learning.

Donner, Nicolas. Thesis, Paris 1, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA010607.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to conceptualize the oil production areas’ territorial status in central Africa. It first proposes to explore – behind the false evidence of an “enclave status” which is commonly accepted without being theorized – their architectural patterns: both those of the “oil enclaves” as such – which will be conceptualized as “artificial islands” by mirroring them with the vast domain of human technical constructions –, and those of the international spatial systems without which they could not exist – oil production spaces appearing as keystones of such systems. They thus highlight one of the contemporary world’s greatest tensions, which stand between the increasingly vital nature of international interdependences and territorial permeations, and the persistence and continuation – as well fundamental – of the territorial and sovereign partition of our world. Oil production – and we will inquire about the truth that hides such a paradox – concurrently appearing as a powerful factor in building international borders (which we will be discuss some current dynamics in the gulf of Guinea) and as creating various ways of unbundling territories and sovereignties, given that nor the activity nor its financial investors easily bear being at sovereign powers’ mercy. We will thus explore – through the contractual relations that intimately tie oil companies and sovereign powers, and through financing techniques such as those Exxon called up in the Chad-Cameroon project – how oil production – because it requires being consequently immunized against political and sovereigns' risks – tends to create various ways of territorial enclaving. And here is what this thesis seeks to demonstrate: that oil enclaves are territories – territories which claim to be conceptualized so as to reconcile their “extraterritorial” extent and their still crucial implant in the sovereign territory

Abstract:
The main aim of this piece of work is to propose an adjustment to the ICE methodology with an increased applicability for small projects. The emphasis is especially given to the most important areas of the methodology that can be easily adjusted or simplified. The theoretical part of this paper consists of four main chapters. The first chapter is called "Project and Project Management". This chapter holistically explains the meaning of project and project management terms. It describes a project from a general point of view and looks at its individual components. The second chapter so called "Methodology" explores particular project management methodologies. It focuses on two basic project lifecycle models along with an analysis of traditional and agile methodologies. The third "Small Project Methodologies" chapter examines the modified methodologies suitable for management of small projects. The final chapter of the theoretical part is the "ICE Methodology Analysis". The analysis represents the key pillar for this work without which the practical part could not be concluded. The practical part of this piece of work focuses on specifics of the ICE methodology modification in accordance with the analysis carried out in the theoretical part. The basis for this modification is represented by the general methodology framework for small projects. The general framework is fully based on the analysis undertaken in the theoretical part of this paper and plays a significant role in the ICE methodology modification process. The main areas of the ICE methodology modification are defined in "The ICE Methodology for Small Projects - Simplification Proposal". The practical part's conclusion presents the unmodified and modified ICE methodology comparison.

Abstract:
Several studies have shown that the main problem in the construction industry is low productivity. Therefore, this study focuses on developing a proposal through a methodology that can increase productivity in the construction of buildings. The proposed methodology is Virtual Design and Construction (VDC), which has 4 pillars: Building Information Modeling (BIM), Integrated Concurrent Engineering (ICE), metrics and Project Production Management (PPM). However, the article mainly develops BIM and ICE sessions. In addition, in the ICE sessions, "work executors"will be added, so that the information is fed back by both parties, specialist engineers and work executors. Finally, the proposal will be applied in a multi-family building project in the city of Lima - Peru, in order to obtain improvement results.

McCollam, Allyson. "An evaluation of an employment project for mentally ill people." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/28569.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the rehabilitation and employment of mentally ill people. It focusses on a Community Programme which offers a year's employment to people with a mental illness. Fifty -three people recruited to the Sprout project were interviewed at various stages during their career on the project. The study sets out to evaluate the project's impact on participants, both during their employment there and subsequently. Participants' views on employment in general and on Sprout were obtained, along with details of their employment and psychiatric histories and of their social circumstances. At a time of high general unemployment, there is much debate about the emphasis work should be given in rehabilitation. In the thesis, I rehearse some of the arguments and counterarguments and consider what light the views of service -users can throw on the issue. It emerges that many mentally ill people believe that they benefit from being in work. They want to work and, given a supportive setting, are capable of doing so. However, there were few opportunities for those leaving Sprout to take up either sheltered or open employment elsewhere. The outcomes for Sprout participants were highly diverse and it seems imperative that such diversity should be reflected in a range of provision which catered for variations in ability and interest. To polarise discussion and debate whether or not work has a place in rehabilitation seems unhelpful. The project had, on the whole, disappointingly little long -term effect on the abilities and quality of life of participants. However, when viewed in the context of other research findings, these results are not surprising as rehabilitation rarely succeeds in bringing about lasting improvements in ability. Moreover, it was evident that Sprout participants often faced substantial difficulties in their lives outside work and yet received little or no support from health or welfare services. This may have affected outcome. The thesis points up deficiencies in current services for mentally ill people and suggests ways in which the employment opportunities of this group might be enhanced. It is insufficient to look only at the employability of the individuals concerned, without also considering the wider social factors which influence access to and retention of employment.

Abstract:

Abstract:
During the Austral Spring of 2007-2008 the ANtarctic geological DRILLing program (ANDRILL) recovered a 1,138 meter long sediment core AND-2A from the western side of the Victoria Land Basin for the Southern McMurdo Sound Project. The main goal of the project is to help establish a Neogene (~24 to 1.6 Mya) ice volume and climate record of Antarctica. This study focuses on the foraminifera record of AND-2A for paleoenvironmental and biostratigraphic purposes.AND-2A is unique in that it contains a Middle Miocene record (~17 to ~11 Mya) that includes the Middle Miocene transition of warm climatic conditions favoring polythermal ice sheets to major cooling into polar conditions resulting in the quasi-permanent formation of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet. This Middle Miocene transition has not been previously recovered from the Antarctic continental margin. The foraminifer record is not abundant; however, three assemblage zones are identified throughout AND-2A. Calcareous benthic taxa dominate every assemblage, as well as displaying similarities between modern shallow shelf assemblages around Antarctica and assemblages from previous drilling projects in the Ross Sea sector. The foraminifera record displays a dynamic environmental record and is supported by both the sedimentologic and other paleontologic findings.

Full text
Abstract:
Clouds play an important role in precipitation, solar radiation budget and electrification of Earth's atmosphere. The presence of small ice crystals in clouds and their morphology can complicate parametrisation and climate modelling, consequently leading to a net cooling feedback on climate. In situ airborne measurements provide single particle characterisation with high temporal and spatial resolution allowing better understanding of atmosphericprocesses of ice nucleation and growth. Simulations of the preindustrial clouds and accurate characterisation and comparison of the instruments require a well-controlled and often pristine environment. The experimental chamber setup allows simulations of these and other conditions. The microphysical features of the micrometric ice particles in clouds were examined in a laboratory setup, at numerous sub-zero temperatures [-10 to -50 ⁰C]. The following instruments were sampling the content of the CLOUD chamber air volume: Cloud and Aerosol Spectrometer with Polarisation (CASPOL), Particle Phase Discriminator mark 2 (PPD-2K, Karlsruhe edition), 3-View Cloud Particle Imager (3V-CPI), and the Scattering-Intensity-Measurements-for-the-Optical-detectioN-of-icE (SIMONE-Junior). Cluster analysis was applied to the data collected with CASPOL and compared with results from the other probes. We were able to discriminate and map the aerosol and cloud particles in the pristine chamber environment using polarisation ratios (Dpol/Backscatter and Dpol/Forwardscatter) of the scattered light. We demonstrate the sensitivity of the instruments in detecting secondary organic aerosol (SOA) phase transitions. Then, we show the ability of the viscous SOA to nucleate ice in a series of SPectrometer for Ice Nuclei (SPIN) measurements. The detected viscous SOA ice nucleation efficiency may affect global modelling and estimations of ice water content in the atmosphere. Subsequently, the analysis and discrimination technique used in the CLOUD chamber was applied to airborne measurements to test its efficiency and to retrieve the composition of clouds. Data from four flight campaigns on board of the FAAM BAe-146 were analysed: Aerosol-Cloud Coupling and Climate Interactions in the Arctic (ACCACIA), COnvective-Precipitation-Experiment (COPE) in south England, CIRrus Coupled Cloud-Radiation EXperiment (CIRCCREX), and PIKNMIX in Scotland. In these and other flights, we were able to identify unique clusters such as salts, minerals, organics, volcanic ash, water and ice, confirming some of the offline laboratory elemental analysis results, and providing complementary information. Single particle polarisation measurements were compared with bulk depolarisation, diffraction patterns, and imaging. Most of the optical instruments still suffer from ambiguity in phase derivation (i.e. water/ice) of optically spherical small shapes. We discuss some of the limitations of optical cloud particle discrimination in different ambient conditions and offer possible solutions to reduce the uncertainty, e.g., surface complexity derivation from scatteringpatterns. Our findings will help to develop better instruments and improve the models which are used for weather forecasts and climate change predictions.

It also determined that juvenile correctional officers as well as others in the criminal justice system are not trained properly to deal with mentally ill juveniles.

Abstract:

In this dissertation we analyze the struggle of domestic workers to obtaining the same rights and guarantees defined for other classes of workers that also perform paid professional activity. We discuss the proclamation of Constitutional Amendment n. 72/2013 and the no equivalence between domestic and non-domestic employees. Thus, the aim is to analyze the process of valuation of domestic workers in Brazil, confronting the establishment and enforcement of legal regulations with opening prerogatives that culminate with the maintenance of inequality among these workers. For this, a historical survey of the regulations is necessary, attempting to achieve awareness and the emergence of new attitudes in the relationship between employer and domestic worker as well as the barriers in the practice of the new rules, hurting one of the principles of the Federal Constitution which is the preservation of human dignity. The research was divided into four parts. The first chapter examines the conceptual identification of domestic workers and the conditions that allow recognition for classification and framing the group as well as the historical evolution of domestic work in Brazil and also it brings the contemplated rights and the ones not established on the Constitutional Amendment n. 72/2013. The second chapter describes the historical development of the working class of domestic workers in Argentina, its law enactment and the new law regulating these workers. The third chapter recaptures the discussion on the professional development of this group with the support of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and its Convention 189 working with the importance and dignity of these employees, as well as biographies and life-history of women activists to the cause.

Abstract:
This thesis is about the relationships between foresight and strategic decision in the domain airport development policies. It is conducted in professional context from a field research : it aims at proposing a frame and a methodology for airport long term choices. Its starting point is the lack of robustness of decisions for a possible third platform for the Parisian area since the beginning of 90’s. This paradoxal situation, if we consider the number of studies about this subject, is worrying because economical, social and environmental stakes lead by such a project are important. Our research work was based on a study of the stakes of long term airport development, a recapitulatory of tools for strategic decision making giving a special place for foresight and an analysis of foresight studies put in perspective of decisions made since 1990. We propose to come to the foresight basic principles back and, for strengthening the decision, to develop tools oriented to the notions of enterprise project and foresight engineery based on scenario methodology witch kept a reference

This work was conducted in the context of a vertex detector (VXD) composed of CMOS sensors for ILD and in the context of the beam telescope of the european project AIDA. The provides the results of beam tests for the new telescope components : the SALAT super-planes and the PLUME double sided ladders. The thesis adresses the added value in terms of alignment, of double sided layers of CMOS sensors for the VXD of ILD. A new standalone alignment method of each of the three double sided layers of VXD with the mini-vectors built on each overlapping zone between the consecutive ladders is analysed. Such alignment was validated with high momentum particles. However, only the beam background particles, with lower momentum, can provide the minimum statistic for this kind of alignment. Thus, the beam background noise was studied and the occupancy rate of the VXD sensors was studied. This led to a reassessment of the readout speed for the sensors of each layer of the VXD

Abstract:
To cope with the low productivity, as well as the fragmentation within the Swedish construction industry, organizations are working with technically mediated social collaboration methods. One of those methods, which have established a considerable presence within the Swedish industry, is Integrated Concurrent Engineering, ICE. The purpose of this study is to provide knowledge regarding how ICE is utilized within the Swedish industry, as well as identify and determine how factors influence the concept. The study is carried out as a case study within a Swedish contractor. Firstly, the thesis examines how the methodology is used in practice during the design stage. This by observing design meetings within two separate projects carried out by the same organization. Secondly, the study explores how the use of the methodology is perceived and recognized by, for the organization, internal and external stakeholders. The individual perception of the concept was acquired by semi-structured interviews. The employed methods in the study enables the thesis to identify and understand factors influencing the use of, and the diffusion of, the concept. Both within the organization as well as within the industry. The study reveals that even though the concept has been practiced for a number of years, the utilization of the concept is fragmented, both within the organization as well as within the industry. For example, external stakeholders experience problems obtaining a clear understanding of the organization’s aims and goals using the concept. This due to inconsistencies between projects within the same organization. Similarly, internal users highlight methodological variations between the organization’s projects. The findings indicate a problem with the organizational definition regarding the content of, and the utilization of, the ICE methodology. Since the organization in the study represents a major part of the communication between the academia and the industry, a problem with the organizational definition does not only affect the organization, it could affect the use of the concept within the entire Swedish construction industry. To enable an organizational learning, as well as to facilitate a diffusion of the concept within the industry, a systematic approach with the methodology is required. The factors identified by the study can be considered important to understand how the concept can be further developed within the organization, but also how to positively affect the diffusion in the industry.

Via an analysis of discourses and institutional strategies of actors involved in the USN/ILC project, a university level learning technologies innovation experiment, this doctoral work studies what is at stakes in these trials and examines the processes by which the building of a local socio-economical system allows to experiment with and define the conditions required for more general e-learning programs. Our hypothesis is that emerging educational technologies are used to legitimize industrial convergence processes and are the alibi actors need to justify the development of new organizational structures. Different scenarios imagined by the actors are incompatible, from an industrial point of view, and imply the use of different economical, affiliations and pedagogical frameworks. Difference tied to the societal finalities desired which bring forth industrialization and reindustrialization processes representing diverse socio-economical logics

Seo, Jae Chul. "Yellow Pacific on White ice : transnational, postcolonial and genealogical reading of Asian American and Asian female figure skaters in the US media." Diss., University of Iowa, 2014. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/2275.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to explore the cultural meanings of Asian/American and Asian female skaters through an examination of the US media narratives of them from a period beginning in the early 1980s and ending in the late 2000s. Main subjects are Tiffany Chin (Taiwanese American), Kristi Yamaguchi (Japanese American), Michele Kwan (Chinese American), and a group of Asians such as Japanese skaters (Midori Ito, Yuka Sato, Shizuka Arakawa and Asada Mao), Chinese skaters (Chen Lu), and Korean skater (Yu-Na Kim). Drawing on Reading Sport Project as a methodological tool and the Sporting Black Atlantic as a theoretical tool, I deploy what I call the Sporting Yellow Pacific as a theoretical reading frame for this project. It refers to a genealogical space that is geographically transnational and historically neo colonial, in which the difference of Asian females is epistemologically subjected as ‘Other’ in the ontological space of American white national imagination. With this frame, I attempt to conceptualize the skaters as what I call the yellow female skater, a racialized and gendered sporting icon, which signifies a number of sets of complex and sometimes ambivalent images: nationally American but racially Asian; culturally favored as a model minority but also perilous and foreign as yellow peril; naturally primitive and/or childish but also hyper-sexual and exotic; and, biologically talented or superior but aesthetically underdeveloped. Through an analysis of these images in relation to representation, discourse, and power, I eventually write this dissertation as a genealogy that traces a historical trajectory of the yellow female skater.

Abstract:
Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) was introduced early in the 21st century in order to encourage work with computer based models and construction planning in the design phase. VDC is a concept that has been embraced by several construction and consulting companies in order to develop their work with Building Information Model (BIM), innovations and cooperation within construction projects. VDC is a concept that keeps evolving and is being redefined by individuals and companies. This has contributed to a conceptual confusion within the construction sector about the definition of VDC. Furthermore, construction projects tend to be fragmented with project members that are working in silos and primarily focusing on their own discipline. In order to decrease the fragmentation within construction projects integrated working methods can be applied. Therefor the purpose of this master thesis is to explore the concept VDC and how it can stimulate integrated working methods.  The study is examined using qualitative methods based on scientific literature and an interview study. The scientific literature is defining VDC conceptually and two integrated working methods Integrated Concurrent Engineering (ICE) and Integrated Project Delivery (IPD). Furthermore, the interview study includes respondents from the construction industry whose reflections and thoughts about the subject are being presented. The study is geographically limited to Sweden.  The result shows the current ambiguity of how VDC is defined. In order to avoid a conceptual confusion a common definition should be formulated with national guidelines that describe how work with VDC should be conducted. Furthermore, VDC can stimulate an integrated approach through increased cohesion within construction projects, including common objectives within the project and joint problem solving between project members.

Abstract:
At Hedlunda in Umeå, there’s a building complex containing a combined preschool, canteen and catering kitchen. It was built in 2014 and the preschool started up the same year. Sweco projected the building to satisfy the requisites required for the international passive house certification. The building was also supposed to meet specific requirements for specialized pedagogy, and requirements for non-toxic building materials in preschools, amongst others. In this master thesis the building’s energy usage was studied to see if the building met the requested requirements, and how close the estimated energy demand was to the actual demand. The purchased energy was also compared to energy requirements used by other certification systems used in Sweden today. The building meets the international passive house requirement for the annual heating demand, but breaches the requirement for primary energy value by 4 %. The Swedish passive house requirement is met with a significant margin. The purchased energy per square meter was 43 kWh /m2 year , which differed only marginally from the projected value of 41 kWh /m2 year . It may seem as if it was a very good estimation of the purchased energy, but when the factors are studied individually there are differences among them that go up to 60 %. The purchased energy per square meter was lower than all of the other requirements in other energy certification systems which proves that this is a highly efficient building. The building was created with the main purpose of serving as a model for energy efficient buildings, and it has served its purpose since Vegaskolan in Vännäs was built within the same concept. All in all, Hedlunda preschool is a building with a very good energy performance. If all public buildings who gained building permit in 2015 in Sweden had been built with the same energy efficiency as Hedlunda preschool, then the total energy demand would be 392 GWh /year , whereas if they were built as the BBR-standard the corresponding energy demand would be 1098 GWh /year . This is just a rough estimation to give a hint of the amount of energy that can be saved.

Abstract:
Urban planning projects lead to more and more waves of public concern and spontaneous mobilization, which lead to tensions surrounding the way decisions are made. Public action sees its conception and implementation be faced with obstacles. And in a context where citizens’ participation in the development of projects seems to be new mode of governance, residents no longer want their role to be limited to that of a simple “opinions provider”. Using the public space and participatory tools, they expect to be able to express their opinion, and also for different surveys to be confronted. It is whiting this framework that Rennes’s B line is being examined. Having learnt of the possibility of there being an overground portion of the line between two ponds in the Longs Champs district, the residents gathered to voice their disagreement.Because of the scale of the mobilization, the project owner decided to organize a “specific consultation” after which the metropolitan project was adopted at the expense of “residential” and “urbanist” projects. The objectives of our thesis are to examine the residents’ groups, to try and grasp the organizational rationalization of collective action aiming towards a common goal; to explore the sociopolitical and communicational issues of participatory tools; to question the production methods of knowledges in the perspective of confroncting legitimate opinions regarding the elaboration and implementation of a project of general interest

Abstract:
Professional competencies are explicitly identified in the primary learning outcomes for science and engineering degrees at many tertiary institutions.  Fulfillment of the requirements to equip our students with these skills, while formally acknowledged as important by all stakeholders, can be hard to demonstrate in practice.  Most degree awarding institutions would have difficulties if asked to document where in degree programs such competencies are developed. The work in this thesis addresses the issue of professional competencies from several angles.  The Open-Ended Group Project (OEGP) concept is introduced and proposed as an approach to constructing learning environments in which students’ development of professional competencies can be stimulated and assessed.  Scholarly, research-based development of the IT in Society course unit (ITiS) is described and analyzed in order to present ideas for tailoring OEGP-based course units towards meeting learning objectives related to professional competence.  Work in this thesis includes an examination of both the meanings attributed to the term professional competencies, and methods which can be used to assess the competencies once they are agreed on. The empirical work on developing ITiS is based on a framework for educational research, which has been both refined and extended as an integral part of my research.  The action research methodology is presented and concrete examples of implementations of different pedagogical interventions, based on the methodology, are given.  The framework provides support for relating a theoretical foundation to studies, or development, of learning environments.  The particular theoretical foundation for the examples in this thesis includes, apart from the action research methodology, constructivism, conceptual change, threshold concepts, communities of practice, ill-structured problem solving, the reflective practicum, and problem based learning. The key finding in this thesis is that development and assessment of professional competencies is not a pipe dream.  Assessment can be accomplished, and the OEGP concept provides a flexible base for creating an appropriate learning environment for this purpose.
