Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this study is to discuss how enhancing the role of local institutions (LI) and incorporating indigenous knowledge (IK) in climate change adaptation planning can improve adoption and scaling success of climate-smart agriculture innovations. Design/methodology/approach A review of relevant literature from sub-Saharan Africa was used to answer the study research questions. Findings Embracing IK and LI in climate change adaptation projects can enhance adoption and scaling success of climate-smart agriculture innovations in smallholder farming. Such efforts will improve: information gathering and dissemination, mobilization of resources, establishment of useful networks with relevant stakeholders, capacity building farmers on various fronts and provision of leadership in climate adaptation programs. Practical implications Fully embracing IK and LI can improve the scaling of climate-smart innovations only if development partners recognize IK systems that are to be transformed and build on them instead of trying to replace them. Also, participatory approaches in scaling innovations will enhance input from rural people in climate change adaptation programs. Originality/value Development interventions aimed at taking proven effective climate-smart innovations to scale must, therefore, engage local communities and their indigenous institutions as active stakeholders in designing, planning and implementation of their climate adaptation programs.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose an interpretive structural modeling (ISM) model which highlights the relationships between the identified just-in-time (JIT) elements useful for the implementation of JIT in maintenance and understand mutual influences of these identified JIT elements on JIT implementation in maintenance. Further, this paper seeks to identify dependence power and driving power of identified JIT elements using an ISM and Matrice d’Impacts Croisés Multiplication Appliquée á un Classement (MICMAC) analysis. Design/methodology/approach The methodology used in the paper is ISM with a view to evolving mutual relationships among JIT elements. The identified JIT elements have been further classified, based on their dependence power and driving power using MICMAC analysis. Findings This paper has developed the relationships among 16 identified JIT elements using the ISM methodology. Further, this paper analyses the driving power and dependence power of identified JIT elements with the help of MICMAC analysis. The incorporated approach is developed here, as the ISM provides only binary correlation among identified JIT elements. The MICMAC analysis is adopted here as it is useful in specific examination related to driving and the dependence power of identified JIT elements. The ISM developed model and MICMAC analysis finding are validated with the help of industrial experts. Research limitations/implications The weightage and validation for the ISM and MICMAC analysis are obtained throughout the opinion of academics and industry experts. Further hypothesis may be conducted to examine the validity of the planned model, and structural model may also be validated statistically with the help of structural equation modeling. Practical implications The ISM model development and MICMAC analysis of identified JIT elements provide academics and maintenance managers a macro picture of the profits gained by the organizations by the implementation of JIT in maintenance of an organization. Originality/value The results will be useful for maintenance managers to understand the process of implementation of JIT in maintenance and to gain benefits after the implementation of JIT in maintenance of an organization.

Abstract:
The paper outlines the main problems and perspectives of methods development for regulation and finding compliance of aircraft during the type design maintainability certification. Mentioned requirements and methods relevance are related to the fact that aircraft continuing airworthiness at the operational stage is possible only with a reasonable combination of the maintenance documentation instructions for continuing airworthiness of a type design and the required level of its maintainability, which both meet the minimum requirements of airworthiness standards. Deficiencies in those requirements and means of compliance have notable influence on the safety and effectiveness of air transportation. Main ICAO standards and international practice of regulation and evaluation of aircraft maintainability and instructions for continuing airworthiness are briefly analyzed. On the base of aircraft maintenance requirements analysis recommendations proposed aimed to further develop regulations and means of compliance for a type design maintainability certification. For solving this problem there is a need to implement certain scientific and practical developments in the domain of integrated logistic support as a technology which integrates the reliability, maintainability and other technical operating capabilities activities for a newly-designed aircraft in order to create its effective maintenance system. The kinds of requirements within the aviation regulations and means of compliance for them are recommended, which have to be corrected and developed, as well as directions of works necessary for that, including implementation of computer modelling and prototypes testing for showing compliance of aircraft with the maintainability certification requirements. It is shown a need for implementation of the scientific and practical results of research in integrated logistic support domain which allow for interconnect of the reliability and maintainability activities within a new aircraft design in order to integrate systematically reliability requirements with the necessary maintenance action in support of reliability and with the required for those maintenance works level of type design maintainability.

Abstract:
Business Intelligence (BI) applications require the design, implementation, and maintenance of processes that extract, transform, and load suitable data for analysis. The development of these processes (known as ETL) is an inherently complex problem that is typically costly and time consuming. In a previous work, the authors have proposed a vendor-independent language for reducing the design complexity due to disparate ETL languages tailored to specific design tools with steep learning curves. Nevertheless, the designer still faces two major issues during the development of ETL processes: (i) how to implement the designed processes in an executable language, and (ii) how to maintain the implementation when the organization data infrastructure evolves. In this paper, the authors propose a model-driven framework that provides automatic code generation capability and ameliorate maintenance support of our ETL language. They present a set of model-to-text transformations able to produce code for different ETL commercial tools as well as model-to-model transformations that automatically update the ETL models with the aim of supporting the maintenance of the generated code according to data source evolution. A demonstration using an example is conducted as an initial validation to show that the framework covering modeling, code generation and maintenance could be used in practice.

Abstract:
Purpose Traction substations are an integral part of the railway infrastructure. In order to ensure that machinery and equipment is available and utilised at full capacity, intelligent maintenance methods should be implemented. The purpose of this paper is to focus on the development of lean maintenance strategies implemented on traction substations and offer the maintenance manager an alternative maintenance method to be utilised during optimisation initiatives. Design/methodology/approach The rail company under consideration has various improvement options, the maintenance supply chain is a priority. The existing maintenance process of 3 kVDC traction substations is examined and all operations and activities directly and indirectly associated with maintenance are analysed with lean methodologies. The analysis of maintenance operations and activities reveals that some of these operations and activities are non-value-adding and, therefore, regarded as waste. These activities only prolong the maintenance process without adding value to the process. Alternative operations and activities are suggested and simulated. Findings The application of lean indicates that the maintenance process could be optimised to deliver on a more efficient process, which would improve the quality of maintenance by ensuring that maintenance is timeously carried out. Through reducing the downtime caused by maintenance, the availability of the system is preserved and the railway lines could be used to capacity. Research limitations/implications The research is limited to 3 kVDC traction substations and the associated maintenance process, as this was the area of opportunity for the company. The track and overhead traction equipment maintenance is not included. Practical implications The practical application of this research is in optimisation of the value chain for maintenance, specifically in the rail industry. Originality/value This research could be applied by maintenance managers to effectively implement if a run-to-failure (RTF) maintenance philosophy is being utilised. The research offers maintenance techniques within the RTF maintenance scope which reduces the maintenance cycle and equipment downtime.
