Abstract:
Today, almost always Online Public Access Catalogues (OPACs) are the only way to access library collections, but practical experience shows that users have problems dealing with electronic catalogues. The author therefore recommends that any good OPAC needs an elaborated online help system. The present master thesis surveys implemented online help systems in German university OPACs and gives a critical discussion. Beyond the variety of help texts, the author also includes help systems like spell check, search filters for results and recommender. On one hand, the analysis is based on a function-related classification of those help systems and on the other, the introduction of the terms effectiveness and efficiency serve as parameters to determine the usefulness of a help system. As a result, the author presents basic principles for an efficient help system that are based on the findings of this master thesis.

Abstract:
This M. A. Thesis deals with the development of adaptive questionnaires for the user-centered evaluation of website usability and an appropriate web application for this purpose. In this matter, a classification scheme for six various website contexts is generated: E-Commerce, Entertainment, Social Software, Information, Homepages (organizational/personal) and E-Learning. For each category, specific usability criteria based on recent literature are identified. These will be the groundwork for the development of category-based 5-level Likert scale items of which the later questionnaires will be composed. The questions will be tested and evaluated by usability-experts and students to ensure their quality and usefulness. After that, a final test with end-users is done using the complete question set of each category to evaluate a corresponding website followed by the analysis of the results. In a final step, a prototype for the web application is developed which will build the basis for the upcoming implementation.

Schaffner, Verena. "FRBR in MAB2 und Primo - ein kafkaesker Prozess? Möglichkeiten der FRBRisierung von MAB2-Datensätzen in Primo, exemplarisch dargestellt an Datensätzen zu Franz Kafkas "Der Process"." Thesis, 2011. http://eprints.rclis.org/16193/1/Master%20Thesis_Schaffner%20Verena.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
FRBR is a conceptual model for the bibliographic universe and aims to simplify browsing in online library catalogues with special regard to users' needs. The data format still in use in the Austrian Library Network is MAB2. Bibliographic records are created according to the rules for alphabetic cataloguing in academic libraries. In 2009 Primo was implemented – a software which is capable of normalizing bibliographic records for front-end display. This Master Thesis wants to highlight the possibilities in Primo for metadata display in accordance with FRBR and the problems occurring in this regard, illustrated by bibliographic records describing Franz Kafka's "Der Process" ("The trial"). The analysis focuses on three aspects: the concept of "work", expressions as valid entities and aggregates respectively multipart monographs. A short introduction into the FRBR model is followed by the attempt to create an ideal FRBR tree for the different manifestations of Kafka's "The trial". Problematic aspects within the model itself are highlighted. Subsequently bibliographic records from the Austrian Cooperative Catalogue are analyzed in order to show the FRBR capability of MAB2 and beyond that to explain the FRBR key options in Primo. Some limitations of FRBRizing MAB2 in Primo have been made particularly apparent: The data in MAB2 records is not consistent enough to enable catalogue displays in accordance with FRBR. Moreover, the possibilities of clustering works and facets may improve browsing for library users, but not as FRBR would propose.

Lewis, Andrew. "A user survey of the experiences of blind and visually impaired people using electronic information services, with regard to the practical implementation of these services in public libraries." Thesis, 2004. http://eprints.rclis.org/5584/1/2004-05-05_Andrew-lewis_MSc-Dissertation_SURVEY-BLIND-USERS-ELECTRONIC-SERVICES.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The report outlines research with blind and partially sighted people using electronic information services in real-life situations, and specifically how their experiences might inform the planning of these services in UK public libraries. Based upon a full literature review, a survey was conducted of blind and partially sighted people who have some experience of using electronic information services, suitable for, but not restricted to use in, public libraries. The methodology outlines the creation of two electronic survey formats, designed to be accessible and usable for blind and visually impaired people, and the related issues of delivery for the study sample. The data collected is included, and a full analysis of the findings is presented. Correlation was found with other wider surveys in the specific fields of blind and visually impaired people, and electronic information services. The report concludes that the visually impaired and especially blind people surveyed feel that libraries are out of touch with their needs relating to electronic information services, that there is correlation between users’ personal preferences and the usability of services, and that diverse and varying services act as a barrier to use. Evidence was also found to support the idea that computer access technologies aimed at blind and visually impaired people may attract very little use in libraries, without significant investment in staff training. A case is made for greater investigation of remote access to electronic services that can be accessed by blind people with their own equipment. This is felt to have usability benefits such as users’ familiarity with their own systems, and the reduction of unnecessary travel. It was also concluded that there is a need for specific consultation with people who are blind, separate from those who are partially sighted, and early involvement of both groups in testing of new services.

Abstract:
The internet is drastically changing the framework of scholary publishing. Scientific publications are increasingly available to the public over the internet, often replacing those found in classical scientific media such as specialist books and journals. The implementation of an electronic publishing process is prerequisite for the successful distribution of scientific information via internet. This however requires the observance of certain rules and regulations which, if not followed, would threaten to create unwanted island solutions through system incompatibilty. The following work elucidates the technical and legal framework of online publications in the context of copyright amandment and open access movement and introduces projects and initiatives which deal within the area of scholary publishing. Further interviews serve to explore problem areas of the current publishing process of master theses. Finally, based on a solution analysis as well as on previous expositions, an electronic publishing process is shaped.

Abstract:
Public procurement in Spain accounts for about 20% of the country's Gross Domestic Product. The large amounts of money that are moving in this area and the growing social concern about knowing what the public money is invested forces administrations to adopt measures on transparency and openness of public data. It is in this profile, in which this work is framed, on the one hand, does the public know how transparent the public administration is, and on the other hand, the administration knows what the optimal characteristics for each contract? The obstacles to comparing this type of information are based on the lack of details of the contracting portals, the different categorizations, the normative plurality and, in short, the difficulty of access to information. The information of the tenders is mostly published in the different portals of contracting of the Autonomous Communities, in addition to the national portal of public sector contracts. Even so, there remains a great difficulty of access and understanding. These evidences demonstrate that the development of this project will be relevant for the target audience. In a bid for the transparency of public administrations, the re-use of bidding data and public sector contracts and the improvement of access to information by citizens, proposes the creation of a technological tool capable of making comparisons between contracts and find the existing relationships. An advance of this project was presented to "Challenges Contribute 2017: The value of the data for the Administration" being selected as one of the ten finalists in Phase I of the 45 projects presented. Phase II of the Challenge will be held in the month of October of this same year.
