Abstract:
The Atlantic Rain forest, which is considered the second largest pluvial forest in the American continent, has had an estimated 93% of its original area destroyed. Although studies concerning the herpetofaunal diversity in this biome have been intensified in the past years, its diversity is still underestimated. The Nucleo Experimental de Iguaba Grande (NEIG) is included in an Environmental Protection Area (APA de Sapeatiba) in the Iguaba Grande municipality, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil (22º 51' S and 42º 10' W). The goal of this study was to conduct an inventory of the reptile and amphibian species that occur in this area between July 2008 and December 2009. We recorded 19 species of amphibians (18 anurans and one caecilian) and 15 species of reptiles (three lizards, 11 snakes and one amphisbaenian). Leptodactylus latrans and L. mystacinus had the highest capture rates among amphibians captured, and among reptiles, Ameiva ameiva, Hemidactylus mabouia and Mabuya agilis had the highest capture rates. Rarefaction curves for both amphibians and reptiles did not reach the asymptote, indicating that the species richness in the NEIG is still underestimated.

Abstract:
Connatural alterations can be deformations or malformations discovered in the embryonic development phase of the animal, which can disguise structures or roles of the systems. Congenital disorders can range from small changes, slight changes, serious adulterations and also genetic inconsistencies. There are no apparent defined reasons, and these changes may be caused by environmental and genetic factors. Pigopagus twins are joined at the back, have a coccyx, the gastrointestinal tract may have a single or separate rectum, a single bladder in some cases and obligatorily separate spinal cord and always with sharing of the pelvic bones. The ischiopagus are united by the ventral region from the navel to the pelvis, two sacrum and two pubic symphysis, in addition to a single gastrointestinal tract and a varied number of limbs. Reporting and discussing the morphological and anatomical deformities presented in a species of Squalus acanthias, recorded by LOPES in 2020, is a big step to better understand the anatomy and physiology of animals, which are considered the top of the food chain in the oceans and are in serious trouble. risk of extinction.

Abstract:
The land use and occupation in watersheds directly influences the water resources, and the vegetation cover is a crucial factor for water maintenance. The objective of this study was to characterize the land use and occupation in nine watersheds of the Lower Iguaçu River (Andrada, Monteiro, Gonçalves Dias, Floriano, Silva Jardim, Cotejipe, Sarandi, Capanema and Santo Antônio sub-basin rivers), using the classification from satellite images. The classification area obtained high accuracy (Kappa coefficient of 99.4 to 99.9%). The Floriano River sub-basin presented the highest degree of environmental preservation, followed by Silva Jardim and Gonçalves Dias River sub-basins, fully or partially inserted in Iguaçu National Park. Monteiro and Sarandi river sub-basins showed the smallest areas of vegetation, and Capanema, Cotejipe, Andrada and Santo Antônio River sub-basins exhibited an intermediate condition. This tendency was verified by the cluster analysis. These results can serve as a baseline for planning, monitoring and management of this area, environmental modeling, conservation of water resources, biodiversity, and environmental services.

PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases 16, no. 3 (March 8, 2022): e0010213. http://dx.doi.org/10.1371/journal.pntd.0010213.

Abstract:
Onchocercidae nematodes are heteroxenous parasites with worldwide distribution, and some of the species associated to animals may present zoonotic potential. Climatic changes and anthropic influences on the environment may result in vectors’ proliferation, facilitating the spillover to humans and/or non-typical animal hosts. The Iguaçu National Park (PARNA Iguaçu), one of the most important Brazilian natural remanescents of Atlantic rainforest, is strongly affected by human activities such as tourism and agriculture. The complexity of this area is especially characterized by the close nexus between the rich wildlife, humans, and domestic animals, especially domestic dogs. Based on this, this research aimed to diagnose the Onchocercidae nematodes in wild carnivores and domestic dogs in the PARNA Iguaçu and the surrounding areas. For this, we collected 162 samples of seven species of wild carnivores and 225 samples of domestic dogs. The presence of microfilariae in the blood samples was diagnosed by the modified Knott’s test and molecular screening, and the specific identification was based on sequencing of the myoHC and hsp70 genes. Microfilariae were detected only in ring-tailed coatis, in which we found five species: Mansonella sp. 1, Mansonela sp. 2, Onchocercidade gen. sp. 1, Onchocercidade gen. sp. 2, and Dirofilaria immitis. The morphological analysis supported the molecular findings. The domestic dogs were parasitized by Acanthocheilonema reconditum, representing a new locality record for this species. Phylogenetic analysis showed high genetic similarity among the four undetermined species and Mansonella spp., Brugia spp., and Wuchereria bancrofti. The presence of D. immitis in ring-tailed coatis may be result of spillover from dogs, even though the parasite was not diagnosed in the sampled dogs. The presence of several undetermined Onchocercidae species indicates the necessity of continuous investigations on wild and domestic animals from Neotropical area, especially considering the growing anthropic influence on forest remnants.

Abstract:
The demand for blackberry has been increasing due to the results of studies on its nutraceutical properties. Moreover, the rusticity of its plants allows its cultivation with reduced use of pesticides, becoming feasible to grow it in areas of environmental protection (APA). As a non-traditional crop in the country and its requirement in specific climatic conditions, there is a lack of studies about management techniques and the adaptability of cultivars in different regions. Thus, it is necessary to study phenological behavior and fruit quality in potential regions. Therefore, this work aimed to verify the adaptability of blackberry cultivars in environmental protection area in Pinhais – PR (Brazil), with no use of pesticides, as well as to evaluate the quality of the fruits produced under this condition, focusing on the recommendation of the cultivars more adapted and the best destination of fruits produced. For this, the phenological and productive performance of seven blackberry cultivars: Tupy, Guarani, Cherokee, Xavante, Brazos, Choctaw, and Arapaho were observed during the cycles of 2017/2018 and 2018/2019. Brazos cultivar had the earliest harvest period, Guarani and Xavante cultivars were intermediate and Tupy and Cherokee cultivars were later in the region. The highest yields were obtained with the cultivars Tupy, Guarani, Xavante, Cherokee, and Brazos. The harvest period extended from November to January. Tupy cultivar produces larger fruits and is the most recommended for marketing as fresh fruit. Other cultivars are recommended for industrialization.

Abstract:
Electrospinning is a unique technique that can be used to synthesize polymer and metal oxide nanofibers. In materials science, a very active field is represented by research on electrospun nanofibers. Fibrous membranes present fascinating features, such as a large surface area to volume ratio, excellent mechanical behavior, and a large surface area, which have many applications. Numerous techniques are available for the nanofiber’s synthesis, but electrospinning is presented as a simple process that allows one to obtain porous membranes containing smooth non-woven nanofibers. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is the most widely used catalyst in photocatalytic degradation processes, it has advantages such as good photocatalytic activity, excellent chemical stability, low cost and non-toxicity. Thus, titanium dioxide (TiO2) is used in the synthesis of nanofibrous membranes that benefit experimental research by easy recyclability, excellent photocatalytic activity, high specific surface areas, and exhibiting stable hierarchical nanostructures. This article presents the synthesis of fiber membranes through the processes of electrospinning, coaxial electrospinning, electrospinning and electrospraying or electrospinning and precipitation. In addition to the synthesis of membranes, the recent progress of researchers emphasizing the efficiency of nanofiber photocatalytic membranes in removing pollutants from wastewater is also presented.

Abstract:
During the design and construction of pipelines, the protection of pipeline equipment, as well as the foundations of pipelines, from possible environmental impacts is one of the most important issues to be addressed. The level of environmental pollution is determined by how human health affects plants, as well as animals, as well as equipment. Another issue is the need to develop scientifically sound forecasts for environmental protection, and many countries are paying more attention to forecasting. As we know, oil, oil products, as well as diesel fuel, gasoline and other products are transported on land mainly through pipelines. Pipeline transport is the safest mode of transporting liquids on land to a specific area. The length of pipelines in modern times reaches hundreds of kilometers, so the volume of spills of hazardous material can be very large. In order to limit the impact area of spills, secondary protection measures are taken only in critical areas (for example, at the intersection of roads or rivers). Keywords: pipelines, environment, vegetation, land reclamation.

Abstract:
Environmental protection (EP) refers to actions targeted to maintain or restore environmental quality associated with various economic activities through financial provision and initiatives. India’s suboptimal performance in EP and climate action so far raises an enquiry into the nature of priority assigned and provisions made for environmental protection expenditure (EPE). This paper examines the recent trends of EPE in India and finds a visibly lower share of EPE in total expenditure and lower rate of growth in comparison to other heads under Classification of the Functions of the Government (COFOG). Capital expenditure on EP has been less than current while subsidy, fund transfer, loans and advances have been near zero. The allocation for environment is inadequate in comparison to other budgetary heads. India fares poorly in EPE when compared to the leading OECD countries, who are global trendsetters for EPE. The current study points at the need for identifying EPE as a core priority area for designing sustainability policies for the long run, by suitably redesigning budget allocation and fund disbursement for implementation of environmental programmes.

Abstract:
The Philippines has had a long history of using marine protected areas (mpas) to achieve fishery and biodiversity conservation goals. mpas are “clearly defined geographical spaces, recognized, dedicated and managed, through legal or other effective means, to achieve the long-term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values.” Within the scope of these definitions, Philippine mpas have taken the form of “no-take” marine sanctuaries, marine reserves where both extractive and non-extractive activities are allowed but regulated, and marine parks and protected seascapes, where various uses are relegated to defined zones. Interestingly, the country was able to develop a unique legal framework that took into consideration both national and local contexts for marine environmental governance. This article thus aims to shed some light on the Philippine experience, emphasizing the various issues and concerns caused by the unique regulatory and governance set up of the country’s mpas.

Abstract:
A better understanding and prediction of the dynamic processes that govern the coastal zone is the topic of the current paper; in particular, a deep investigation of the coastal processes that affect the shoreline dynamic and flood inundation risk is carried out at the Annunziata river mouth area (Italy). The Annunziata River is situated in the Northern part of Reggio Calabria city; it is, at the same time, a source of danger and an important environmental and hydrological resource for Reggio Calabria, since on the right side there is the city port and on the left side there is the public beach. The protection and management of coastal areas should be supported by a deep knowledge of the interaction between water motion and seabed topography, which affects the natural response of coastal systems to changes in external conditions and to human interferences. This work tries to analyze the coastal morphology through the use of some recent models based on spectral theory.

ABSTRACT The study aimed to identify and evaluate the spatial variability in laminar erosion in areas using precision agriculture tools. Soil data from three properties in the western region of Paraná state, Brazil, were used: one in the municipality of Céu Azul (area A) and two in Serranópolis do Iguaçu (areas B and C). To identify discrepant data (outliers), analysis of the dispersion of quartiles was performed using a box-plot graph. Data normality was verified using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. A spatial analysis was performed using AgDataBox-Map software. The parameters of the universal soil loss equation were estimated and used with map algebra to produce a model to identify areas susceptible to erosion. Area A (soil loss estimate = 0-200 t ha-1 per year) presented greater susceptibility to erosion than areas B and C (soil loss estimate = 0-150 t ha-1 per year); however, all areas had a low susceptibility to erosion.

AbstractEnvironmental crime has been a topic discussed in international fora for many years. In February 2007, the European Commission presented a proposal for a Directive on Environmental Crime. This is not the first legislative instrument in the area at the level of the European Union. But for reasons that go far beyond the environmental content of this proposal, its discussion in the Council, which was taken up in March 2007 under the German Presidency, will be most controversial and of particular interest not only to environmental lawyers.' The following article aims at providing some background on the fight against environmental crime at the international and European level by giving an overview over the content of the draft directive (I) with a focus on particularly controversial aspects (II) and finally looking at the institutional setting in which discussion of the proposal will take place in the Council and in the European Parliament (III).

Abstract:
The environmental quality of the ecological protection zone directly affects the water quality and air quality of the area, thereby affecting the quality of people’s life. This paper constructs the evaluation index system of the environmental quality of the ecological protection area and determines the classification standards of each index, proposes the extension evaluation method of the environmental quality of the ecological protection area, and uses the entropy weight method to determine the weight of each level of index. Its purpose is to understand the development trend of environmental quality in all aspects of the ecological reserve through the dynamic evaluation of the environmental quality of the ecological reserve, so as to take corresponding countermeasures to promote the healthy development of the area. The constructed model was used to dynamically evaluate the environmental quality of the ecological reserve in Zhangjiakou City from 2008 to 2019. The research results show that the environmental quality gaps in different aspects of the ecological reserve of Zhangjiakou City are relatively large, and the overall regional ecological environment characteristic value is decreasing year by year, reflecting that the environmental quality of the ecological reserve of the region is getting better year by year.

Abstract:
Corral fishing is one of the most traditional ways of fishing in the coastal zone of Brazilian northern state of Pará. It is a very productive activity, which point out the cultural characteristics, the traditional knowledge and the social profile of the fishermen who perform it. This paper characterizes Corral fishing in the Algodoal-Maindeua Environmental Protection Area (APA Algodoal-Maiandeua), verifying the geographical positions of the corrals and the situation in which they are (active or inactive), considering the type of corral, the vegetal resources used for its construction, its origins, the assembly, the periodicity of the construction and the harvest. The results were obtained through field trips in order to map and define the area of study; identify corral fishermen and apply semi-structured interviews. Based on field surveys, we show that there are 111 corrals in the area, being in greater numbers in the village of Algodoal. The activity is mainly performed by men aged 52 and 85 years. The vegetable resources frequently used for the manufacture of the corrals are bacuri (Platonia insignis), caraipé (Licania sp.), jarana (Lecythis lurida) and buiuçú (Ormosia coutinhoi). The fish species most captured are Gó (Macrodon ancylodon), Piramutaba [Catfish] (Brachyplatystoma vaillantii), Dourada (Brachyplatystoma flavicans; Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii) and Uritinga (Arius proops), whereas species considered scarce in the region are the Mero (Epinephelus itajara), Tainha (Mugil spp.) and Xaréu (Caranx spp.). The research results provide support for the improvement of the management plan of the APA Algodoal-Maiandeua, as instrument capable of promoting the community and sustainable management of fisheries resources in the protected area.

Abstract:
This study aims to examine the position of environmental permits in the perspective of environmental crimes against cases of mangrove forest destruction in Makassar City. This study uses a normative-empirical research method, namely the type of normative legal research that is supported and equipped with empirical data. The research approach method used is the statutory approach and the case approach. The types and sources of data used are primary data and secondary data. Furthermore, both secondary and primary data were analyzed using qualitative analysis techniques and presented descriptively. The results of this research are: The position of environmental permits in the perspective of environmental crimes is an absolute thing to be fulfilled. The environmental permit which was originally regulated in UUPPLH has now been amended in a new regulatory provision, namely Article Number 11 of 2020 concerning Job Creation is an environmental agreement. The nomenclature is different, but the meaning remains the same, namely both environmental permits and environmental approvals are needed to limit the space for business actors to move so as not to deviate from the permits given.

Abstract The conducted research is aimed at the formation of preventive technologies that ensure environmental safety in connection with the functioning of fuel and energy complex facilities. A feature of these technologies is their formation on the basis of problems identified as a result of studying the existing actual relations to prevent environmental pollution in this area. Thus, the basis of the proposed preventive technologies is actually existing relations for prevention in the field of ensuring environmental protection in this direction, and not the regulatory and legal provisions, which are most often subject to change. The results obtained in the form of conclusions and suggestions are based on the existing difficulties of preventive relations, related, among other things, to the lack of legal regulation, contribute to the streamlining and optimization of activities in the field of environmental safety, which predetermines the practical and theoretical significance of the study. The study contains the concept, structure and classification of preventive technologies based on practical methodology aimed at solving practical problems and tasks, including a set of specific methods, techniques and rules differentiated by the subject of preventive impact.

Abstract:
High-value landscapes, habitats, and species are protected increasingly through a range of local, national, and international designations and policies. Often one site may be protected by a multitude of designations. However, international designations are commonly implemented through national mechanisms. Using the Forvie Sands and Ythan Estuary area of northeast Scotland as an example, we review the effectiveness of multiple environmental designations. After an examination of existing and proposed designations for the study area, overlaps and loopholes in environmental protection are identified. We conclude that protection from more than one designation may either afford the site additional protection or emphasise the importance of the site at different levels; local, national, and international. The principal loophole relates to unregulated activities undertaken beyond the designated site which may have an adverse effect on the protected area. Possible solutions include extending the designation to include the sources of the threat or to combine an appropriate designation strategy with effective regulation of the threat itself. In developing designation strategies, environmental protection agencies should consider these options.

Abstract:
Black carbon, which is taken the sources from the products of the incomplete combustion or pyrolysis of organisms or volatile components of fossil fuels, has a large specific surface area and strong adsorption capacity for organic matters. Nowadays, black carbon has been widely used as the adsorbent or passivating agent in environmental pollution control. However, black carbon is a hydrophobic non-polar adsorbent, which results in the difficulty of dispersing in the solution without modification. Thus, in order to increase the surface oxygen-containing groups, the modification should be done before black carbon used to adsorb or inactivate heavy metal. The concepts, sources and application status of black carbon in environmental pollution control are summarized. Meanwhile, the modification methods and the application prospect of black carbon are put forward.

Abstract:
At present, the issue of environmental pollution is gradually becoming one of the central problems facing individual countries and the international community. Meanwhile, the analysis of investment projects shows that most of them are focused on profit making, without due consideration of public environmental interests. In this regard, there is a serious need to find a balance between the interests of investors and the interests of society and citizens in preserving and improving the natural environment. In such circumstances, the state environmental policy should be based on an optimal combination of both administrative methods of influencing investors (penalties, environmental taxes, compensation for environmental damage) and the promotion of so-called environmental investment which implies the development and implementation of a specific investment project, whose goal will be to solve a specific environmental problem. The authors identify various legal forms of environmentally oriented investment, as well as formulate proposals for improving the current legislation in this area.

Abstract:
Introduction. Taking into account the prevailing urban planning situation, the residential area has almost come close to the burial sites. Justification of the possibility of a safe interposition for the population of residential and “zones with special conditions for the use of territories”, to which the sanitary protection zones (SPZ) are referred, requires scientific and methodological study due to the lack of normative fixation of the procedure. The purpose of the study was the hygienic assessment of burial sites as sources of environmental pollution, the development and practical testing of methodological approaches to substantiating the size of the sanitary protection zone, the admissibility (inadmissibility) of placing normalized, in accordance with the requirements of sanitary legislation, objects in the SPZ cemeteries. Materials and methods. The design and technical documentation were studied, the analysis and assessment of the obtained data on the quality of environmental objects on the territory and boundaries of the SPZ of the cemetery for compliance with sanitary and epidemiological requirements and hygienic standards was carried out. Results. To substantiate correctly the hygienic requirements for the conditions of burial and the safe operation of cemeteries, excluding the possibility of their negative impact on the health of the population, a comprehensive sanitary and chemical assessment has been developed with the determination of the degree of influence of burials on environmental objects. An algorithm for the formation of the evidence base for the absence (presence) of the negative impact of the fact of the location of residential buildings in the sanitary protection zone of cemeteries is proposed. A step-by-step assessment mechanism has been worked out including identification of hazards, instrumental measurements of the quality of environmental objects, selection of priority pollutants and objects (sources) that pose a threat to public health. Limitations. The research was carried out for the territories of cemeteries, it includes an assessment of the sources of environmental pollution specific to this type of burial. The methods used for this study are used to assess soil, groundwater, and atmospheric air. Conclusion. The proposed procedure, tested in real conditions of a large city, makes it possible to form the criteria and priorities of the evidence base for making a decision on the assessment of the hazard (safety) of the placement of residential buildings and other standardized territories within the boundaries of the existing sanitary protection zones of cemeteries.

In the upcoming period, the Republic of Serbia should provide financial resources in the amount of about EUR 10 billion for the field of environmental protection in order to harmonize standards with EU standards in the same area and in that way bring it closer to joining the European peoples' community. Analyzing existing sources and levels of environmental financing, there are major problems that the Republic of Serbia has to overcome in order to join the European Union. It is necessary to adopt strategies in the field of climate change, air pollution and waters of the Republic of Serbia, and that the Ministry of Environmental Protection should be given greater authority. One of the most common and most sophisticated sources of financing environmental protection is found in fiscal conditions, primarily in ecological taxes, fees and taxes collected within the tax system of the Republic of Serbia.

Hyper and multispectral imaging systems are widely used in agricultural and environmental protection. Remote sensing techniques are suitable for evaluating environmental protection hazarsd, as well as for agriculture resource exploration. In our research we compared aerial hyper and multispectral images, as well as multispectral digital camera images with the background data from the test site. Hyperspectral records were obtained using a new 80-channeled aerial spectrometer (Digital Airborne Imaging Spectrometer /DAIS 7915/. We have chosen two farms where intensive crop cultivation takes place, as test sites, so soil degradation and spreading of weeds can be intensive as a result of land use and irrigation. We took additional images of air and ground with a TETRACAM ADC wide band multispectral camera, which can sense blue, green and near infrared bands. We had detailed GIS database about the test site. Weed and vegetation map of the area in the spring and the summer was made in 2002. For soil salt content analysis, we gathered detailed data frome an 80x100 m area. When analyzing the images, we evaluated image reliability, and the connection between the bands and the soil type, pH and salt content, and weed mapping. In the case of hyperspectral images, our aim was to choose and analyze the appropriate band combinations. With a TETRACAM ADC camera, we made images at different times, and we calculated canopy, NDVI and SAVI indexes. Using the background data mentioned above, the aim of our study was to develop a spectral library, which can be used to analyze the environmental effects of agricultural land use.

Abstract:
The article addresses the understanding of the legal categories "legal protection" and "protection of rights". The legal nature and content of these definitions are analyzed. Particular attention is paid to the characteristics of these definitions in scientific international and domestic doctrines. The positions of five different scientific schools on the understanding of these concepts are considered. The first cohort of scientists adheres to the views according to which such definitions are analyzed as interaction of whole and part. The second group of scholars identifies the concepts of "legal protection" and "protection of rights". The third point of view on the specified theoretical problems, consists of the delimitation of the outlined definitions. The fourth constellation of scholars reveals the analyzed categories through the prism of individual branches of law, taking into account the subject and method of legal regulation of each area. The universal approach distinguishes between the concepts of "legal protection" and "protection of rights" and considers them as different, but at the same time absolutely full-fledged legal categories. It is substantiated that the latter has normative and applied significance and is effectively used by the international community both at the doctrinal and legislative levels. On the basis of the conducted theoretical research the independent scientific conclusions and judgments on the analyzed subjects are offered, in particular the author's definition of definition "legal protection" is given. In addition, the main features inherent in the above categories are highlighted. Particular attention is paid to the need of highlighting the preventive component of the concept of "legal protection", which is particularly important within this category.

This study focuses on environmental issues caused by the marble industry in district Buner. District Buner is home to 247 marble factories, which operate in blatant violation of environmental protection laws. The factories and other projects are required to comply with certain provisions of the Pakistan Environmental Protection Act (PEPA), 1997 and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Environmental Protection Act (KPEPA), 2014, respectively. By contrast, the marble industry in district Buner follows none of these laws which have led to serious environmental pollution, most characteristically water, air, and noise pollution. This paper exclusively discusses those provisions of KPEPA, 2014 which are being violated by these marble factories that have led to drastic environmental crisis in the area.

Abstract:
The paper examines the performance of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) in the field of transport, environment and health. In the course of the study, the tasks of reviewing and summarizing the main arguments of supporters and critics of UN activities in this field and forecasting the development of its potential in the future, the institutional features of the reforms to achieve sustainable development, as well as the most important problems of the green economy are performed. The authors emphasize that in the recent 25 years environment protection has become a priority for the UN activity. Additionally, international conferences on environmental issues and sustainable development have been an important tool to define global priorities, to raise awareness about these issues and to draw attention to essential problems that can be neglected. According to the authors of this study, no matter how inspiring the tendency of the growth of the number of specialized agencies involved in solving problems of transport, environment and health, these efforts are clearly not enough. The paper substantiates the conclusion that today the UN is the only global organization with the required resources to be able to positively influence the sphere of environmental protection. At the same time, comprehensive institutional mechanisms to improve the transport system, environmental protection and the coordination of health strategy are needed within the framework of the activities of the specialized UN agencies.
