Abstract:
Isotropic-genesis nematic elastomers (IGNEs) are liquid crystalline polymers (LCPs) that have been randomly, permanently cross-linked in the high-temperature state so as to form an equilibrium random solid. Thus, instead of being free to diffuse throughout the entire volume, as they would be in the liquid state, the constituent LCPs in an IGNE are mobile only over a finite, segment specific, length-scale controlled by the density of cross-links. We address the effects that such network-induced localization have on the liquid–crystalline characteristics of an IGNE, as probed via measurements made at high temperatures. In contrast with the case of uncross-linked LCPs, for IGNEs these characteristics are determined not only by thermal fluctuations but also by the quenched disorder associated with the cross-link constraints. To study IGNEs, we consider a microscopic model of dimer nematogens in which the dimers interact via orientation-dependent excluded volume forces. The dimers are, furthermore, randomly, permanently cross-linked via short Hookean springs, the statistics of which we model by means of a Deam–Edwards type of distribution. We show that at length-scales larger than the size of the nematogens this approach leads to a recently proposed, phenomenological Landau theory of IGNEs [Lu et al., Phys. Rev. Lett.108, 257803 (2012)], and hence predicts a regime of short-ranged oscillatory spatial correlations in the nematic alignment, of both thermal and glassy types. In addition, we consider two alternative microscopic models of IGNEs: (i) a wormlike chain model of IGNEs that are formed via the cross-linking of side-chain LCPs; and (ii) a jointed chain model of IGNEs that are formed via the cross-linking of main-chain LCPs. At large length-scales, both of these models give rise to liquid–crystalline characteristics that are qualitatively in line with those predicted on the basis of the dimer-and-springs model, reflecting the fact that the three models inhabit a common universality class.

Abstract:
This article examines the nexus between financial activism and global environmental governance, analyzing the emergence of what we call “investor-driven governance networks” (IGNs). Our paper seeks to probe the significance of IGNs as a particular manifestation of responsible investor activism and more generally as a financial instrument of environmental governance and sustain-ability. We argue that IGNs, many of which are concerned with climate change governance, have become important actors in the global economy and deserve more analysis by scholars concerned with new forms of authority in global environmental politics. As an example of emerging transnational private governance, IGNs utilize the power of the financial sector to shape the discourse on climate change within the business community and to link the long-term viability of environmental sustainability to the core strategic interests of corporations and investors.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE Lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) is an increasingly popular technique used to treat degenerative lumbar disease. The technique of using an intraoperative cone-beam CT (iCBCT) and an image-guided navigation system (IGNS) for LLIF cage placement has been previously described. However, other than a small feasibility study, there has been no clinical study evaluating its accuracy or safety. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy and safety of image-guided spinal navigation in LLIF. METHODS An analysis of a prospectively acquired database was performed. Thirty-one consecutive patients were identified. Accuracy was initially determined by comparison of the planned trajectory of the IGNS with post–cage placement intraoperative fluoroscopy. Accuracy was subsequently confirmed by postprocedural CT and/or radiography. Cage placement was graded based on a previously described system separating the disc space into quarters. RESULTS The mean patient age was 63.9 years. A total of 66 spinal levels were treated, with a mean of 2.1 levels (range 1–4) treated per patient. Cage placement was noted to be accurate using IGNS in each case, as confirmed with intraoperative fluoroscopy and postoperative imaging. Sixty-four (97%) cages were placed within Quarters 1 to 2 or 2 to 3, indicating placement of the cage in the anterior or middle portions of the disc space. There were no instances of misguidance by IGNS. There was 1 significant approach-related complication (psoas muscle abscess) that required intervention, and 8 patients with transient, mild thigh paresthesias or weakness. CONCLUSIONS LLIF can be safely and accurately performed utilizing iCBCT and IGNS. Accuracy is acceptable for multilevel procedures.

Abstract:
Abstract Purpose Endoscopic endonasal surgery (EES) has become the standard practice in sinonasal and anterior skull base surgery. The purpose of this manuscript is to describe experience using a new technology—the image guided navigation system (IGNS)—in complex cases undergoing EES. The advantages and disadvantages of computer aided surgery are discussed. Patients and methods A total of 165 endoscopic endonasal procedures were performed between April 2001 and January 2003. IGNS was used in 34 patients in whom it was assumed that the ability to identify surgical sites accurately could be compromised by previous surgery, massive recurrent polyposis, or abnormal anatomy, or when biopsies had to be taken from specific anatomic locations (for example, clivus, wall of sphenoid sinus, orbital apex). The precision of the navigation system, total operating room time, surgeon’s satisfaction and confidence, and intraoperative and postoperative complications were recorded. Results In 33 out of 34 patients the surgical procedure was uneventful. One patient with an atelectatic maxillary sinus developed a minor complication of preseptal orbital haematoma. In 94% the IGNS provided accurate anatomical localisation with less than 2 mm localisation error (1.1–2.0 mm, mean 1.6 mm). In all cases the surgical team felt that the system increased the intraoperative safety factor for the patient. The overall operating room time at the end of the study was 15 minutes longer than when regular EES was used. Conclusions IGNS enables a new level of efficiency and safety in EES. Nevertheless, it is not advised for surgeons who are not familiar with regular EES. For the experienced endoscopist, however, IGNS is a valuable new tool in complex procedures.

Abstract:
Abstract Background: Au(III) catalyzed luminol chemiluminescence (CL) is classic in luminescence analysis. Recently, spherical gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) were found displaying far stronger catalytic activity on luminol CL than that of Au(III). Some methods based on Au-NPs probes have been developed for DNA detection or immunoassay. However, more complicated labeling or stripping procedures are often inescapable in these protocols. Methods: We synthesized specially shaped, irregular gold nanoparticles (IGNPs) and found their catalytic efficiency on luminol CL to be 100-fold greater than that of spherical Au-NPs. Using the IGNPs-functionalized DNA oligomers and the IGNPs-modified anti-IgG as in situ chemiluminescent probes, we established sandwich-type analytic methods for rapid, simple, selective, and sensitive sequence-specific DNA detection and for human plasma IgG immunoassay, respectively. We used 12 clinical human plasma samples to examine the precision and accuracy of the proposed method for IgG content determination. Results: Calibration curves for the oligonucleotide [ΔI = 15.73 + 27.55 (DNA) × 1010 (mol/L); R2 = 0.9936] and IgG [ΔI = 48.84 + 30.23 (IgG) × 1010 (mol/L); R2 = 0.9964] show good correlation, demonstrating the linear response over the concentrations tested (0.04–10 nmol/L for DNA, 0.05–10 nmol/L for IgG). The limit of detection, calculated based on 50 μL of a solution of calibrators, was 13 pmol/L for DNA and 17 pmol/L for IgG, with a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. We obtained good intra-and interassay reproducibility. The IgG contents in 12 human plasma samples obtained by the proposed method are identical with the data of clinical laboratory. Conclusions: We developed a simple and sensitive method for in situ amplified chemiluminescence detection of sequence-specific DNA and immunoassay of IgG by use of highly active, specially shaped, irregular gold nanoparticles (IGNPs) as label and confirmed by clinical samples test. This method has many desirable features including rapid detection, selectivity, and little required instrumentation. This new protocol may be quite promising, with potentially broad applications for clinical immunoassays and DNA hybridization analysis.

Abstract:
The speed at which climate change is happening is leading to a demand for new pozzolanic materials that improve the quality of cements and, at the same time, limit the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The main objective of this work is the detailed characterization of an ignimbrite sample (IGNS) to demonstrate its effectiveness as a natural pozzolan. To meet this objective, a series of tests were carried out. In the first stage, mineral and chemical analyses were performed, such as petrographic analysis by thin section (TSP), X-ray diffraction (XRD), oriented aggregate (OA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF). In the second stage, the following technical tests were carried out: chemical quality analysis (QCA), pozzolanicity test (PT) and mechanical compressive strength (MS) at 7, 28 and 90 days, using mortar specimens with ignimbrite/cement formulation (IGNS/PC): 10, 25 and 40% to establish the pozzolanic nature of the ignimbrite. The results of the mineral and chemical analyses showed that the sample has a complex mineralogical constitution, consisting of biotite mica, potassium feldspar, plagioclase, smectite (montmorillonite), quartz, volcanic glass, iron, titanium and manganese oxides, chlorite and chlorapatite. On the other hand, the technological tests revealed the pozzolanic nature of the sample, as well as visible increases in the mechanical compressive strengths in the three proportions, the most effective being IGNS/PC:10% and IGNS/PC:25% at 7, 28 and 90 days of setting. The results obtained could be applied in the formulation of new pozzolanic cements with ignimbrite as a natural pozzolanic aggregate.

Full text
Abstract:
Antenna is one of the key payloads of the GNSS-R system, and the gain is an important performance parameter. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the received signal can be improved by increasing the gain of the GNSS-R antenna, therefore the measurement accuracy is improved. However, the antenna gain and its beam width, these two performance parameters, are contradictory. If the gain of the antenna is increased, its beam width will inevitably become narrower. This narrowed beam width will affect the width of the survey strip for the GNSS-R system, which cannot meet the requirement of the high-precision and high-spatial resolution spaceborne GNSS-R sea surface altimetry in the future. In this paper, a novel dual circularly polarized phased array antenna (NDCPPA) is proposed and investigated. First, the GNSS-R satellites currently operating in orbit are all cGNSS-R systems, which use the traditional element antenna (TEA) method for measurement. The antenna used in this method is with low gain, which limits the improvement of sea surface measurement accuracy. In response to this problem, this paper establishes an NDCPPA model of iGNSS-R measurement system based on the theory of coherent signal processing on the sea surface. This model uses the high-gain scanning beam to increase the gain of the iGNSS-R antenna without affecting its coverage area, thereby improving the sea surface altimetry precision. Second, in order to verify the gain improvement effect brought by adopting the NDCPPA model, an NDCPPA model verification prototype for iGNSS-R sea surface altimetry was designed and fabricated, and then measured in a microwave anechoic chamber. The measurement results show that, compared with the TEA method, the antenna gain of our proposed verification prototype is enhanced by 9.5 dB. And the measured and designed value of the gain of the verification prototype matches well. Third, based on the GPS L1 signal, the NDCPPA model is used to analyze the effect of improving the precision of sea surface altimetry. Compared with the TEA method, the proposed model can increase the altimetric precision of the nadir point from 7.27 m to 0.21 m, which effectively improves the performance of the iGNSS-R altimetry. The NDCPPA model proposed in this article can provide the theoretical method basis and the crucial technical support for the future high-precision and high-spatial-resolution GNSS-R sea surface altimetry verification satellite.

Straipsnyje aptariama Igno Danilavičiaus (1787–1843) teisės teorija. Jis buvo žymus Lietuvos teisės istorijos tyrinėtojas, pažangios lietuvių teisinės minties kūrėjas. I. Danilavičiaus darbuose ryški prigimtinės ir istorinės teisės teorijų įtaka. Santuokos teisėje I. Danilavičius pasisakė už vyro ir žmonos teisių lygybę.

Abstract:
This article analyses mechanisms of heritagisation that transformed oil from a natural to a cultural resource through the case study of the Branobel corporation, which operated in Azerbaijan from the late nineteenth century, and by reflecting on the role of the Branobel corporate narrative in heritagisation of oil and in justification of the world order based on fossil fuels. The narratives developed by the Branobel corporation introduced their business legacy as a part of global heritage. In the article I refer to the ‘The Thirty Years of Activity of the Oil Production Association of the Brothers Nobel. 1879–1909’ published in 1909, that not only reports on Branobel’s industrial achievements, but promotes the history of oil, propagating its civilisational importance, while describing the company as an evolutionary part of this history. In their branding strategy, Branobel referred to the ancient religious cults and mythologies of Azerbaijan, for example in the case of the world’s first oil-tanker ‘Zoroaster’, designed by Ludvig Nobel. The images of Ateshgah, ‘The Fire Temple of Baku’, were used on the company’s emblems to connect symbolically the industrial oil mining with the ‘eternal fires’ worshipped at the Absheron Peninsula as ‘the lights of life’.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this article, the author focuses on the expression of music in the early texts of Lithuanian prose innovator Ignas Jurkūnas Šeinius (1889–1959). Starting with Werner Wolf’s typology of the relations between words and music, and incorporating insights from other scholars (Lars Elleström, Siglind Bruhn, Vytautas Kubilius, Irina Melnikova, etc.), the article discusses the different forms of music and the meanings they produce in Šeinius’ novel Kuprelis (1913, 1932), in one segment of his short story “Vasaros vaišės” [Summer Feast, 1914], and in the novella “Marių daina” [The Song of the Lagoon, 1914]. The analysis has shown that in the novel Kuprelis, music expression explicates the experiences of the main characters, their self-perception and relationship to other characters, becoming a symbol of love, and pointing to and predicting important moments in the story. In the analyzed passage from the short story “Summer Feast,” one can notice a parallel with the musical form of fugue, which creates the impression of multiple motifs sounding and being perceived at the same time, and which emphasizes the aspect of the existential climax that is being developed by the narrative. Combining music, literature and painting, the novella “The Song of the Lagoon” echoes the synthesis of these arts captured in Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis’s pictorial sonata “Jūra” [The Sea].” The ekphrastic nature of the novella invites the reader to see the figures from the paintings reproduced using words, and to hear the musical motifs that accompany them.

Abstract:
The transplantation of GABAergic neuron cells has been reported to alleviate nerve pain and improve motor function after spinal cord injury (SCI). However, human mesenchymal stem cell (hMSC) differentiation into GABAergic neuron cells in a sufficient quantity remains to be accomplished. From a database screening, cAMP-responsive element-binding protein 1 (CREB1) was chosen as a potential modulator due to its critical role in the protein–protein interaction of genes related to GABAergic neural differentiation. Here, CREB1 was overexpressed in transfected hMSCs, where CREB1 could induce differentiation into GABAergic neuron cells with an upregulation of Map2 and GAD1 by 2- and 3.4-fold, respectively. Additionally, GABAergic neural differentiation was enhanced, while Notch signaling was inhibited, and BRN2 transcriptional activation played an important role in neuronal maturation. Moreover, transfected hMSCs injected into immunocompromised mice caused by CsA exhibited the neuronal markers Tuj1 and Map2 via the intraspinal route, suggesting an improvement in survival and neural differentiation. Significantly, improvement in both BMS scores (6.2 ± 1.30 vs. 4 ± 0) and thermal hyperalgesia latency (7.74 ± 2.36 s vs. 4.52 ± 0.39 s) was seen compared with the SCI naïve treatment at 4 weeks post-transplantation. Our study demonstrates that CREB1 is crucial in generating induced GABAergic neuron cells (iGNs) originating from hMSCs. Transplanting iGNs to injured spinal cord provides a promising strategy for alleviating neuropathic pain and locomotion recovery after SCI.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper reports the in vitro antiproliferative effects, antiprotozoal, anti-herpes and antimicrobial activities of 32 organic extracts of 14 marine sponges and 14 corals collected in northeast Brazilian coast. The ethanolic extracts of the sponges Amphimedon compressa and Tedania ignis, and the acetone extract of Dysidea sp. showed relevant results concerning the antiproliferative effects against A549, HCT-8, and PC-3 cell lines by sulforhodamine B assay, but also low specificity. Concerning the antiprotozoal screening, the ethanolic extract of Amphimedon compressa and the acetone and ethanolic extracts of Dysidea sp. were the most active against Leishmania amazonensis and Trypanosoma cruzi expressing β-galactosidase in THP-1 cells. In the preliminary anti-HSV-1 (KOS strain) screening, the ethanolic extracts of the sponges Amphimedon compressa, Haliclona sp. and Chondrosia collectrix inhibited viral replication by more than 50%. The most promising anti-herpes results were observed for the ethanolic extract of Haliclona sp. showing high selective indices against HSV-1, KOS and 29R strains (SI> 50 and >79, respectively), and HSV-2, 333 strain (IS>108). The results of the antibacterial screening indicated that only the ethanolic extract of Amphimedon compressa exhibited a weak activity against Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli by the disk diffusion method. In view of these results, the extracts of Amphimedon compressa, Tedania ignis and Dysidea sp. were selected for further studies aiming the isolation and identification of the bioactive compounds with antiproliferative and/or antiprotozoal activities. The relevant anti-herpes activity of the ethanolic extract of Haliclona sp. also deserves special attention, and will be further investigated.

Abstract:
Dampak pada aspek non fisik yaitu peningkatan aspek sosial ekonomi masyarakat suku Bajo di BajoE Kabupaten Bone.---------------------------------------------------------------------------The settlements of the Bajo tribe, which are known as settlements on the sea, are scattered in several water areas in Indonesia, one of which is in the BajoE coastal area, Bone Regency, South Sulawesi. At first they lived on a boat, then underwent changes, began to build houses on the river, then gradually shifted to building houses on land. Changes in settlements from sea to land is a long process and is influenced by the surrounding environment, both physical (natural) and non-physical (cultural) factors. According to Kleden, (1987), cultural change as a process is a three-step movement according to the direction of change which can be called a process of cultural transformation. Cultural transformation, is a change in the value system, the framework of knowledge and meaning (system meaning), behavior, interaction and institutionalization of forms of interaction. The concept of cultural transformation can be used to examine the transformation of Bajo tribal settlements in BajoE from the perspective of physical, social and economic changes in settlements. This research was conducted using literature, interviews and field reviews to describe changes that occurred both physically and non-physically from the Bajo tribal settlements. The library method is used because data related to the past cannot be observed empirically such as understanding past events related to history, perceptions and cultural value systems. Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that the concept of cultural transformation of Ignas Kleden can explain the transformation process of the Bajo tribal settlements which consists of three steps, namely: integration, disintegration, reintegration (value system) and orientation, disorientation, reorientation (system of meaning). In addition, cultural change will change: Behavior from acceptance of patterns, sometimes through rejection of patterns to acceptance of new patterns. People who interact from socialization, through being socialized into resocialization. As well as strengthening the forms of interaction from the organization, through disorganization into reorganization. The impact of the change in location on the physical aspect is a change in: the location of the house (above the sea to the mainland), the shape, area, and appearance of the house. The impact on non-physical aspects is an increase in the socio-economic aspects of the Bajo tribal community in BajoE, Bone Regency.

Abstract:
Improving the altimetric precision under the requirement of ensuring the along-track resolution is of great significance to the application of iGNSS-R satellite ocean altimetry. The results obtained by using the empirical integration time need to be improved. Optimizing the integration time can suppress the noise interference from different sources to the greatest extent, thereby improving the altimetric precision. The inverse relationship between along-track resolution and signal integration time leads to the latter not being infinite. To obtain the optimal combination of integral parameters, this study first constructs an analytical model whose precision varies with coherent integration time. Second, the model is verified using airborne experimental data. The result shows that the average deviation between the model and the measured precision is about 0.16 m. The two are consistent. Third, we apply the model to obtain the optimal coherent integration time of the airborne experimental scenario. Compared with the empirical coherent integration parameters, the measured precision is improved by about 0.1 m. Fourth, the verified model is extrapolated to different spaceborne scenarios. Then, the optimal coherent integration time and the improvement of measured precision under various conditions are estimated. It was found that the optimal coherent integration time of the spaceborne scene is shorter than that of the airborne scene. Depending on the orbital altitude and the roughness of the sea surface, its value may also vary. Moreover, the model can significantly improve the precision for low signal-to-noise ratios. The coherent integration time optimization model proposed in this paper can enhance the altimetric precision. It would provide theoretical support for the signal optimization processing and sea surface height retrieval of iGNSS-R altimetry satellites with high precision and high along-track resolution in the future.

Smith (1982), there is a serious, possibly a fatal, objection: the genitive plural of hiems is a grammarians' figment and never occurs in classical Latin (TLL s.v. 2773.84); while Lachmann's conjecture is palaeographically improbable. Read ad gelidas rigidasque pruinas; rigidas was omitted by haplography, a fecund source of corruption, and hiemis then supplied from the context to repair the metre. Dailėtyrininkas, meno istorikas ir pedagogas Ignas Šlapelis - ryški asmenybė XXa. pirmosios pusės Lietuvos kultūriniame gyvenime. Savo kritiniuose straipsniuose jis nuosekliai plėtojo svarbias meno sociologijos idėjas, susiedamas jas su to meto menu. I. Šlapelis vienas pirmųjų Lietuvoje iškėlė estetinio lavinimo būtinybę. Remdamasis Europos ir Amerikos mokyklų patirtimi, jis pasiūlė naują konkretų dailės dėstymo mokykloje metodą. Taigi Igną Šlapelį pelnytai galėtume laikyti meno sociologijos pradininku Lietuvoje.
