Abstract:
Isotropic-genesis nematic elastomers (IGNEs) are liquid crystalline polymers (LCPs) that have been randomly, permanently cross-linked in the high-temperature state so as to form an equilibrium random solid. Thus, instead of being free to diffuse throughout the entire volume, as they would be in the liquid state, the constituent LCPs in an IGNE are mobile only over a finite, segment specific, length-scale controlled by the density of cross-links. We address the effects that such network-induced localization have on the liquid–crystalline characteristics of an IGNE, as probed via measurements made at high temperatures. In contrast with the case of uncross-linked LCPs, for IGNEs these characteristics are determined not only by thermal fluctuations but also by the quenched disorder associated with the cross-link constraints. To study IGNEs, we consider a microscopic model of dimer nematogens in which the dimers interact via orientation-dependent excluded volume forces. The dimers are, furthermore, randomly, permanently cross-linked via short Hookean springs, the statistics of which we model by means of a Deam–Edwards type of distribution. We show that at length-scales larger than the size of the nematogens this approach leads to a recently proposed, phenomenological Landau theory of IGNEs [Lu et al., Phys. Rev. Lett.108, 257803 (2012)], and hence predicts a regime of short-ranged oscillatory spatial correlations in the nematic alignment, of both thermal and glassy types. In addition, we consider two alternative microscopic models of IGNEs: (i) a wormlike chain model of IGNEs that are formed via the cross-linking of side-chain LCPs; and (ii) a jointed chain model of IGNEs that are formed via the cross-linking of main-chain LCPs. At large length-scales, both of these models give rise to liquid–crystalline characteristics that are qualitatively in line with those predicted on the basis of the dimer-and-springs model, reflecting the fact that the three models inhabit a common universality class.

Abstract:
This article examines the nexus between financial activism and global environmental governance, analyzing the emergence of what we call “investor-driven governance networks” (IGNs). Our paper seeks to probe the significance of IGNs as a particular manifestation of responsible investor activism and more generally as a financial instrument of environmental governance and sustain-ability. We argue that IGNs, many of which are concerned with climate change governance, have become important actors in the global economy and deserve more analysis by scholars concerned with new forms of authority in global environmental politics. As an example of emerging transnational private governance, IGNs utilize the power of the financial sector to shape the discourse on climate change within the business community and to link the long-term viability of environmental sustainability to the core strategic interests of corporations and investors.

Abstract:
Este estudo culmina numa análise comparativa entre habitações articuladas a partir de um centro ígneo; ABSTRACT: Fire appears to be in the origins of the house and the idea of home, initially established as the center of the dwelling. Progressively has lost its importance, moving from the center to the side walls. This work intends to develop the concept of fire as the center and symbol of the house, while founder of the domestic space and the beginning of dwelling, as well as a qualifying element of architectural space. The intention of making this concept one of theoretical exploration appears to contribute to the understanding and design of architectural project, within the contemporary context. To this end, it analyzes the evolution of the space of fire in the house, as well as the study of the different sensory, cognitive and symbolic components attached to it. This work culminates in a comparative analysis between houses articulated from an igneous center.

Lectin obtained from the marine sponge Tedania ignis was purified and characterized by extraction of soluble proteins (crude extract) in 50mM Borax, pH 7.5. The purification procedure was carried out by crude extract precipitation with ammonium sulfate 30% (FI). The precipitated was resuspended in the same buffer and fractionated with acetone 1.0 volume (F1.0). A lectin was purified from this specific fraction by using an affinity chromatography Sepharose 6B. This lectin preferentially agglutinated human erythrocytes from B type previously treated with papain enzyme. The hemagglutinating activity lectin was dependent of divalent Mn2+ cation and was inhibited by the carbohydrates galactose, xylose and fructose. SDS-PAGE analysis indicated a molecular mass of the lectin around 45 kDa. This protein showed stability until 40?C for 1 h. Further, it showed activity between pH 2.5 and 11.5, with an enhanced activity at pH 7.5. Leishmania chagasi promastigotes stained with Coomassie brilliant blue R-250 were agglutinated by F1,0 and in the presence of galactose this interaction was abolished. These results show that this lectin could be implicated in defense procedures and it will can be used as biological tools in studies with this protozoon

Full text
Abstract:
In 1988, Jean Guillou composed Hyperion on a commission from the French oil company, Société Nationale Elf Aquitaine, to celebrate its discovery of oil. He developed this theme of fire using his imagination, European philosophical concepts, and various myths. As with Messiaen, rhythm becomes a significant element in Guillou's organ music to convey a heightened dramatic story of an exaltation of fire and to represent the fourth movement of "Agni-Ignis." For aspects of rhythmic structure, I developed new methodology to analyze rhythm in six sections of "Agni-Ignis." Guillou uses experimental rhythmic techniques such as rhythmic subdivision, cycling, rhythmic ostinato, durational contrast, and rhythmic crescendo to build the musical structure of the piece. Among them, the primary subdivision of 16th-note groups organizes throughout the piece as a cyclic theme to convey the powerful and vivid mood of fire. This rhythmic group creates many pitch patterns as thematic transformation to provide both rhythmic and harmonic complexities. The two types of rhythmic ostinato, which is variable and invariable type, juxtapose below the manual's skillful rhythm to provide variety and unity. The other notable features of rhythm appear at the border of each section, such as rhythmic crescendo, durational contrast, 32nd-note groupings, rest and fermata to build tension and relaxation. The rhetorical figure of pitch D, which is another "fire theme" in the pitch aspect dominates the core section which has a much slower rhythm with sustained notes. In general, Guillou has been influenced by his predecessors such as his teacher, Messiaen, and Stravinsky. However, he is uniquely suited to explore the limitless possibilities of the organ in a more secular and avant-garde style. The purpose of this study is to give the performer new insight to guide his or her performance.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Returning to the opening scene of the book, this chapter explains the factors that led Laura Clay to resign from KERA and to oppose ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment. By 1916, the National American Woman Suffrage Association had endorsed Carrie Chapman Catt's “Winning Plan,” pledging to pursue a federal amendment as its key goal and demanding that states shelve their own plans in favor of national goals. Clay lined up with many southern “states' rights suffragists” such as Kate Gordon and continued to advocate for a state route to the ballot.
