Abstract:
The problem of the non-Gaussian and non-stationary noise in the data of the International Gravitational Wave Event Collaboration (IGEC) is investigated for the two detectors Explorer and Nautilus. We report simple tests that show how part of the IGEC events belong to non-Gaussian and non-stationary noise.

Abstract:
The International Gravitational Event Collaboration, IGEC, is a coordinated effort by research groups operating gravitational wave detectors working towards the detection of millisecond bursts of gravitational waves. Here we report on the current IGEC resonant bar observatory, its data analysis procedures, the main properties of the first exchanged data set. Even though the available data set is not complete, in the years 1997 and 1998 up to four detectors were operating simultaneously. Preliminary results are mentioned.

Abstract:
Inhalation of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) extracted from diesel exhaust particles (DEP) enhances local (nasal) production of IgE in humans. The aim of the present research is to investigate whether in humans dermal exposure to PAHs which are not extracted from DEPs increases serum IgE and whether host factors modify the immunologic effect. In thirty-two patients with acute psoriatic lesions, a cream containing 3% of coal tar (which holds a variety of PAHs) was applied to the skin for 24 hours. Serum IgE were measured before (IgE0) and four (IgE4) and eight (IgE8) days after application. Replicated means were compared by analysis of variance for repeated measures and by the Newman-Keuls' test. IgE0, IgE4 and IgE8 were 151.19, 159.69 (a 6% excess) and 170.90 kU/L (a 13% excess) respectively; pairwise comparison showed IgE8 was significantly higher than IgE0 (p<0.05). At multiple linear regression analysis, the percentage increase in serum IgE across observation days was the dependent variable against age, sex, cigarettes/day, urinary 1-pyrenol, atopy, skin area treated, and grams of cream. Of the independent variables, only age had a significant (p<0.028) influence: the younger the age, the higher the IgE response to PAHs. We conclude that whatever the source and the route of entry (skin or respiratory tract), PAHs increase total serum IgE, mainly in younger age groups.

Abstract:
Gravitational events on IGEC data are marked with their detection time td. Although td takes into account phase shifts due to hardware and software, it could be statistically retarded or anticipated by noise with respect to the arrival time ta of a gravitational wave. Then we can estimate a time interval Δ for each event so that we can consider the ta of the event equally likely in Δ. Consequently we can define a n-fold coincidence as a n-tuple of events whose associated time intervals have a non-empty intersection. Using this definition and taking into account some time interval properties we show that a n-fold coincidence set can be computed by an appropriate selection of events from the 2-fold coincidence sets. Furthermore, we stress that a data base management system (DBMS) is a very effective tool to store IGEC data (i.e. events) and to implement n-fold coincidence analysis based on the above considerations. Finally we propose to use a DBMS to build a database of both events and n-fold coincidence analysis data in order to have an efficient and powerful tool for data retrieval and further analysis.

Abstract:

This paper will discuss the proposed reintroducing of a final degree in upper secondary school. In a public government inquiry that was released in March 2008 a proposal about reintroducing a final degree in upper secondary school was presented. A final degree has not been a part of the upper secondary school science 1968. Why was the system with a final degree abounded and why do the government want to reintroduce it?

Research in pedagogy has through the years presented numbers of theories about assessment. In last decades a great part of the discussion has been focused on formative assessment. In formative assessment the assessment is used as a pedagogy tool. The purpose is to help the student develop their learning process and to learn to work independently. The contrary to formative assessment is assessment which only purpose is to summarise and control the level of knowledge a student possesses.

The public government inquiry that led to abolish of a final degree in upper secondary school in 1968 shared many thoughts with theories about formative assessment. Forty years later the government has grown sick of all the formative assessment, which they think has led to a “muddled” school. The public government inquiry presented in 2008 wants to reintroduce a final degree and create a school where the student’s knowledge is orderly controlled and summarised.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Global civilisation, and therefore population health, is threatened by excessive inequality, weapons of mass destruction, inadequate economic and political theory and adverse global environmental change. The unequal distribution of global foreign exchange adjusted income is both a cause and a reflection of global social characteristics responsible for many aspects of these inter-related crises. ¶ The global distribution of foreign exchange adjusted income for the period 1964-1999 is examined. Using data for more than 99% of the global population, a substantial divergence in its distribution is found. The global Gini co-efficient, adjusted for national income inequality, increased from an already high value of 71% in 1964 to peak at more than 80% in 1995, before falling, very slightly, to 79% in 1999. The global distribution of purchasing parity power income is also examined, for a similar period. Though also found to be extremely unequal, its trend has not been to increased inequality. Implications of the differences between these two trends are discussed. ¶ A weighted time series index of global environmental change (IGEC) for the period 1960-1997 was also calculated. This uses nine categories of global time series environmental data, each scaled so that 100% represents the level of each category in nature prior to anthropogenic change; zero represents decline to a critical point. This index fell from 82% in 1960 to 55% in 1997, and will further decline during this century. ¶ Using evidence from several disciplines, it is argued that the decline in the IGEC correlates with major macro-environmental changes, which, combined with flawed social responses to scarcity and its perception, place at risk the ability of civilisation to function. This could occur because of the interaction of conflict, economically disastrous extreme climatic events, deterioration of other ecosystem services, regional food and water insecurity, and currently unforeseen events. Uncertainty regarding both a safe rate of decline and the tolerable nadir of the IGEC is substantial. ¶ Substantial reduction in the inequality of foreign exchange adjusted income is vital to enhance the development of policies able to reverse the decline in the environmental goods which underpin civilisation, and to promote the co-operation needed to maximise the chance that civilisation will survive.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Malmö is one of many municipalities in Sweden that are planning to adopt a system for collecting and handling the food waste generated within it. The goal is that at least 32 percent of the house owners within the municipality will choose to volunteer to sort out their food waste from 2009. To make their participation voluntary demands a high standard on the initial information campaign that VA SYD, the municipal corporation that is responsible for the collection, is planning to carry out with the purpose of getting as many house owners as possible to participate. This study has intended to, based on three focus group interviews with house owners from the districts of Djupadal, Kastanjegården and Riseberga in Malmö, identify what factors are influencing their willingness and opportunity to sort out their food waste. We then studied what barriers and opportunities those factors may involve if you by communicational means intend to influence Malmö’s house owners to voluntarily sort out their food waste long term. From our studies results you can deduce that an environmentally controlled waste tax with a lower fee for those who sort out their food waste is a strong incentive. How much lower is not important since it’s the principle that matters. It is important to give frequent feedback to the house owners in the form of substantial and intrinsic examples about what the collected food waste is used for, and what good it does for the environment. The containers are believed to be ugly and something that seizes up space. One way to create positive attention around the containers is to offer print on them. It is very important that the municipal council gives as good prerequisites as possible for the house owners to sort out their food waste. If the technical aspects of the system work well it signals credibility and seriousity and can motivate the house owners to do their part that is, sorting out their food waste. To convert negative attitudes within the house owners you should refer to experiences from other municipalities that are collecting food waste from house owners. By pictures and coverage’s with their house owners they can act as role models for Malmö’s house owners.

Abstract:
Ten normal cats were immunised with Dermatophagoides farinae (DF) antigen and intradermal skin tests (IDSTs) were performed weekly. Sera from the latter were also assessed for DF-specific IgE by ELISA and PK tests. Detectable DF-specific IgE was induced in all of the 10 cats, however levels were found not to be correlated with the development of positive IDSTs nor with the levels of IgE as assessed by PK tests. Sera from 10 cats with symptoms consistent with atopy, from 15 normal household cats and from 11 laboratory maintained cats were assessed for allergen-specific IgE and IgG to DF by ELISA. Although DF-specific IgE was detectable in all the atopic cats, there was no significant difference between the levels in this group and in the clinically normal household cats. However levels in both these groups were significantly higher than those in the laboratory maintained cats. The influence of vaccination and endoparasitism on the IgE response to a food antigen was assessed in 34 cats. Seventeen kittens experimentally infected with T. cati and 17 parasite-free kittens were dosed with human serum albumin (HSA) daily for 3 weeks. Seven cats from both groups were given two injections of a live attenuated viral vaccine. The group of parasitised cats has significantly higher levels of HSA-specific IgE, IgG and IgA than did the group of parasite-free cats. Vaccinated cats had also higher levels than non vaccinated cats but only in the group of parasite-free cats. None of the cats developed clinical signs of food allergy.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Integrated Coal Gasification Fuel Cell Combined Cycle (IGFC) is expected to be the most efficient power generation system in coal fired power generation systems [1,2]. However, more energy efficient power generation system has to be developed to decrease CO2 emission in the middle and long term. Thus, the authors have proposed Advanced Integrated Coal Gasification Combined Cycle (A-IGCC) and Advanced IGFC (A-IGFC) systems, which utilize exhaust heat from solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) and / or a gas turbine as a heat source of gasification (exergy recuperation) [3]. Previously A-IGCC [4] and A-IGFC [5] without CO2 capture option were analyzed with the process simulator HYSYS®.Plant (Aspen technology Inc.) to calculate thermal efficiencies of the proposed systems. Then IGCC and A-IGCC with CO2 capture option [6, 7] were analyzed with Amine process simulator AMSIM(DBR), a module in PRO/II® (Invensys Process Systems Japan, Inc) combined with HYSYS®.Plant model. It shows in the results of thermal efficiency with CO2 capture option that the penalty of A-IGCC case is larger than that of IGCC case, indicating somewhat scope for increase of exergy recuperation in A-IGCC case [6]. This study deals in the analyses of A-IGFC with CO2 separation unit.

Integrated Gasification Fuel Cell (IGFC) power plants incorporating solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are attractive alternatives to traditional pulverized coal-fired and Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plants. IGFC systems are projected to achieve electrical generation efficiencies greater than 50% based on high heating value of coal, while separating at least 90% of the carbon dioxide emissions for capture and environmentally secure storage. A comprehensive IGFC system design and optimization study is presented based on recent SOFC performance testing and technology advancements. Details of the system power island cost break-down are also presented, indicating the cost-competitiveness of IGFC systems relative to other coal-fueled power generation technologies. Comparisons of the projected IGFC system efficiency and water consumption are made to pulverized coal-fired and IGCC power plants.

Abstract:
The Integrated coal Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) is considered to be a very clean and efficient system for coal-fired power generation. And given the development of 100 MW-scale solid oxide fuels cells (SOFCs), the integrated coal Gasification Fuel Cell combined cycle (IGFC) would be the most efficient coal-fired power generation system. However, more energy efficient power generation systems must be developed in order to reduce CO2 emissions over the middle and long term. Thus, the authors have proposed the Advanced Integrated coal Gasification Combined Cycle (A-IGCC) and Advanced IGFC (A-IGFC) systems, which utilize exhaust heat from solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and/or gas turbines as a heat source for gasification (exergy recuperation). The A-IGCC and A-IGFC systems utilize a twin circulating fluidized bed coal gasifier consisting of three primary components: a pyrolyzer, steam reformer and partial combustor. The temperature of the steam reformer is 800 °C, and that of the partial oxidizer is 950 °C. Since the syngas, produced by pyrolysis and the reforming process involving volatile hydrocarbons, tar and char, contains carbon monoxide and hydrogen, the A-IGCC technology has considerable potential for higher thermal efficiency while utilizing low-grade coals. The coal types utilized in the study were bituminous Taiheiyo, sub-bituminous Adaro and Loy Yang coal. Milewski’s formula was used to model the circuit voltage of the SOFC. Cool gas efficiency increases, in order, from Taiheiyo coal to Adaro coal to Loy Yang coal. The A-IGFC system has the potential to achieve high thermal efficiency using various coals, with Loy Yang coal achieving the highest thermal efficiency. However, the drying process for Loy Yang and Adaro coal is an important issue.

Abstract:
Two power generation systems with pre-combustion CO2 capture fuelled with hydrogen from coal gasification are analyzed and compared from a thermodynamic and economic standpoint. The first solution, referred as Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle with CO2 Removal (IGCC-CR), is fuelled with hydrogen produced by the integrated gasification section. The second, referred as Integrated Gasification Hydrogen Cycle (IGHC), is based on the oxycombustion of hydrogen, producing steam that expands through an advanced high temperature steam turbine. The two H2 production sections are similar for both power plants, some minor modifications having been made to achieve better integration with the corresponding power sections. System performance is investigated using coherent assumptions to enable comparative analysis on the same basis. The plants have overall efficiencies of around 39.8% for IGCC-CR and 40.6% for IGHC, slightly lower than conventional IGCCs (without CO2 capture) with a CO2 removal efficiencies of 91% and 100% respectively. Lastly a preliminary economic analysis shows an increase in the cost of electricity compared to conventional IGCCs of about 44% for IGCC-CR and 50% IGHC.

Abstract:
Integrated Coal Gasification Fuel Cell Combined Cycle (IGFC) is expected to be the most efficient power generation system in coal fired power generation systems [1,2]. The Japanese project of the Strategic Technical Platform for Clean Coal Technology (STEP-CCT) aims a target efficiency of 65% (HHV) with exergy recuperation. We have been analyzing the processes of the exergy recuperated Integrated Coal Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) and the Advanced IGCC (A-IGCC) [3] which is expected to be realized in 2040. Previous studies have indicated a limitation of the quantity of high temperature steam in the case of auto-thermal reactions with the fluidized bed coal gasifier in the A-IGCC, in particular for TIT 1500 °C class gas turbine. The Advanced IGFC (A-IGFC) system can reduce the exergy loss resulting from combustion, and its ‘exergy recuperation’ is appealing. The waste heat exhausted from the fuel cells is recycled to the gasifier for steam reforming in an endothermic reaction with a low exergy loss and a high cold gas efficiency. Our current study focuses on the optimization of the unit configurations of the A-IGFC including gasifier, compressor, solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), combustor, gas turbine, heat recovery steam generator (HRSG), and steam turbine. The process simulator HYSYS®.Plant (Aspen technology Inc.) is employed in order to express the gasifier, the SOFC and the other units. The optimum construction over the whole system by numerical simulation was examined for higher energy utilization efficiency. Under ideal conditions using bituminous coal, we verified the power generation efficiency to be 64.5% (HHV). However, utilizing low-grade coals, i.e., lignite and sub-bituminous coal, is deemed an important future energy resource to compensate for a decreasing supply of good-quality bituminous coal. For these low-grade coals, the power generation efficiency was as high as 53.6% (HHV) under the following conditions: Gasifier inlet: coal 23.6 Kg/s (667 MJ/s), steam 16.44 kg/s; Reactor reforming gas: 30.0, 8.7, 2.0, 0.8, 0.3, 0.05, 0.24, 0.14, 0.1 and 5.5 kg/s for CO, CO2, H2, CH4, C2H4, C2H6, C3H6, HCN, N2 and H2O respectively. The projected power outputs with this system were, SOFC: 214 MW; Gas turbine: 318 MW; Steam turbine: 86 MW.

Abstract:
Coal is a valuable primary energy source that has excellent supply stability and economic efficiency. Japan has extremely low energy self-sufficiency and coal-fired power generation is positioned as an important base load power supply. One urgent issue we face is to find realistic countermeasures that greatly reduce CO2 emissions from coal-fired power plants which produce a large volume of CO2 emissions. Therefore, we have launched the Osaki CoolGen Project since April 2012 as an “Integrated Coal Gasification Fuel Cell Combined Cycle (IGFC) Demonstration Project” subsidized by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (until 2015 FY) and New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (from 2016 FY). This project aims to realize innovative low-carbon coal-fired power generation that combines an IGFC, an extremely efficient coal-fired power generation technology with high-performance CO2 capture technology for the purpose of dramatically reducing CO2 emissions from coal-fired power generation. This project consists of three steps. The first step will implement demonstration tests of the oxygen-blown Integrated coal Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) which is the base technology for IGFC. Toward the start of demonstration testing in March 2017, construction was started in March 2013 and commissioning was started in April 2016. In the second step, we plan to carry out demonstration tests of the oxygen-blown IGCC with CO2 capture equipment. In the third step, we plan to demonstrate an IGFC system combining the demonstration plant of the second step with a fuel cell.

Abstract:
An advanced coal based power plant system that has an electrical efficiency of 60% on an HHV basis is defined. The solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) hybrid has been shown to be an essential requirement in order to achieve such a high efficiency. The coal is gasified utilizing a high pressure air-blown advanced transport reactor (ATR). A thermo-economic analysis of this integrated gasification fuel cell (IGFC) plant is performed by comparing it to an integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) plant that utilizes a gas turbine combined cycle for power generation. Results of this thermo-economic analysis indicate that the required “break even” cost of the SOFC system is $400/kW on an installed cost basis such that the cost of electricity of IGFC plant is the same as that of the IGCC plant. Coproduction of H2 and capture of carbon emissions may be incorporated in the design without causing a major thermal penalty on the system performance when high temperature separation membranes are employed. An O2-blown gasifier is required for such applications. The technology development needs are addressed.
