Abstract:
Geographic Information Systems and Network Information Systems are important tools for our society, used for handling geographic spatial data and large information networks. It is therefore important to make sure such tools are of high quality. GIS/NIS applications typically deal with a lot of data, possibly resulting in heavy loads of network traffic. This work aims to evaluate two different communications protocols and serialization formats for client-server communications efficiency in GIS/NIS applications. Specifically, these are HTTP/1.1, HTTP/2, Java Object Serialization and Google's Protocol Buffers. They were each implemented directly into a commercial GIS/NIS environment and evaluated by measuring two signature server calls in the system. Metrics that were examined are call duration, HTTP overhead size and HTTP payload size. The results suggest that HTTP/2 and Google's Protocol Buffers outperform HTTP/1.1 and Java Object Serialization respectively. An 87% decrease in HTTP overhead size was achieved when switching from HTTP/1.1 to HTTP/2. The HTTP payload size is also shown to decrease with the use of Protocol Buffers rather than Java Object Serialization, especially for communications where data consist of many different object types. Concerning call duration, the results suggest that the choice of communications protocol is more significant than the choice of serialization format for communications containing little data, while the opposite is true for communications containing much data.

Particularly this elaborate focuses the attention on the metadata and their importance for the realization of the scientific communication on which the OAI puts back its own efforts. As it regards the metadata they come particularly deepened the Dublin Core format, adopted as base by the OAI, and the MARC 21 format, one of the few formats able to manage data highly formalized, as for instance those of the bibliographical catalogs. Other treated aspect, regarding the metadata inside such initiative, it is their format XML of representation. Importance also is given to one of the active subjects in the process of communication among Open Archive: the Service Provider. The experimental part of the elaborate consists in the application of the software CDSware (Cern Document Server Software) for the conversion of the bibliographical records imported by the managerial system of library Aleph 500 in UNIMARC format to the XML MARC 21 format. Particularly, the realization of such part is focused on the use of the CDSware internal module: BibConvert, that allows the conversion of the bibliographical records withdrawn by an external source in the inside format of the CDSware system.

Findings Participants usually used PDAs and smartphones for web search, personal information management and communication in daily activities. They also used handheld computers for searching medical databases and drug references, reading electronic books and web search. Participants believed that usefulness, ease of use, education, organizational factors, individual features, social influences, observability, compatibility and job characteristics were the main factors affecting the adoption of these devices in medical settings. It was found that the most important benefits of using handheld computers included easy access and instant delivery of health information, medical errors reduction, access to evidence based and up-to-date medical information, portability, improving clinical decision makings and treatment quality. Three limitation categories of usage were also identified upon data analysis: Limitations related to handheld computers, individual barriers, and external limitations. Conclusion Significant development and effective changes are taking place in the field of medicine by the emergence of handheld computers in clinical settings; but in developing countries like Iran it is in its childhood period and needs more attention. It is important to use supportive tools like mobile technologies in healthcare organizations for better patient care. Healthcare managers and policy makers can use findings of current study for a better integration of handheld computers in medical settings. They can apply encouraging factors in hospitals, medical centers and clinics to make mobile technologies as popular devices among healthcare professionals.

Abstract:
The music industry has experienced a major slump in sales of physical sound storage media such as the compact disc. Contrary to this, revenues gained in the online music sector doubled in 2006. In this growing industry digital standard formats and standard workflows in the electronic music distribution process could help companies to lower their costs and work more efficiently. This thesis provides a rough overview of the digital music distribution industry with a special focus on the business-to-business relationship between music aggregators and music download platforms. It aims to clarify whether standards regarding workflow, music data and music metadata exist. First, a review of literature is undertaken in order to gain knowledge about the social construction theory and actor network theory as well as facts and figures about the current digital music industry. Then five qualitative interviews are conducted with expert representatives of music aggregators and online music distributors. The interviews aim at identifying constraining closure mechanisms and uncovering details about the actors´ attitudes towards standardisation of workflows and data. The main outcome of the thesis is that there is a need for standardisation of music metadata, data processing and sales reporting procedures. The findings suggest that the most powerful actors in the music business, represented by the IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry), need to agree on international standards for the issues mentioned above. The findings also provide a list of starting points for further research and discussion about improvements in the digital music sector.

Abstract:
Online video streaming is a learning technology used in today’s world and reliant on the availability of bandwidth. This research study sought to understand the perceptions of network managers about bandwidth and online video streams in ABU Zaria. To achieve this, the interpretive paradigm and the Network Gatekeeping theory were used as the theoretical framework and also a case study approach was employed to investigate the phenomena. The study used a purposive sampling technique and a semi-structured interview to seek out opinions from the respondents. A thematic analytical approach was done with the use of Nvivo software, which yielded one hundred and seven codes, ten sub- categories and four major categories. The findings from the study indicated that 1) perceptions of network managers was one sided 2) no acceptable user policy was on ground and available bandwidth was limited 3) limitation of bandwidth, hindered user access to online video and mechanisms for gatekeeping had a role to play in the overall access to online video. Findings interpreted using the network gatekeeping theory suggest that to facilitate access for online video streaming user claims and bandwidth be taken into consideration.

Abstract:
Information is an intrinsic element to human relations. When transmitted or stored in digital media, it needs to be well described so it can be efficiently retrieved, accessed and interpreted by society. Among the themes of interest to society today, agrobiodiversity is a broad concept that involves organisms and ecosystems related to agricultural production and crops. For computational systems, the representation of information produced about agrobiodiversity can be done with metadata. However, the existing metadata standards do not fully include the representation of some concepts of agrobiodiversity, as in the Darwin Core (DwC) standard. The aim of this research was to present principles for the creation of an extension of metadata for the DwC standard, having as scope the ecological interactions in the context of agrobiodiversity. To achieve the research aim, the methodology, characterized as exploratory, qualitative, applied and descriptive, was divided into two stages: 1) exploration of methodological and terminological inputs; 2) terminological definition and metadata modeling. The execution of the first stage of the methodology was organized into four substeps: a) systematic analysis of the literature on ecological interactions; b) analysis of the main core of DwC terms; c) analysis of the extensions to the DwC metadata standard; d) correlated terminological analysis of the classes of the model , DwC and concepts of ecological interactions. The first substep resulted in a conceptual model on ecological interactions; the second substep resulted in the translation of the definitions of the terms of the main core of the DwC and respective analyzes; the third substep presented a summary of the content of the metadata extensions developed for DwC in other projects; and, finally, the fourth substep consisted of analyzing in a correlated manner the classes of the model, which was developed by Embrapa in order to organize information on agrobiodiversity, the DwC term classes and their extensions and the conceptual model of ecological interactions. The second stage of the methodology resulted in three metadata elements, created to represent the interaction of parasitism, represented as a metadata record in Extensible Markup Language (XML). It is considered that the greatest contribution of this research was to present a set of methodological principles for the creation of an extension of metadata for the representation of ecological interactions in the context of agrobiodiversity, which can foster improvements in agricultural practices, which are important for the entire community. society, as well as for the field of information science studies.

Abstract:
The open access movement seeks to make as many scientific publications as possible freely available on the internet. In order to achieve this goal, besides establishing online journals which are free of charge, it follows the strategy of self-archiving. According to this strategy, scientists are required to make their peer-reviewed journal publications available in digital repositories while complying with copyright regulations. Meanwhile, such repositories have been established by many universities and research institutes. However, recent studies have shown that most academics do not make their publications available. In order to motivate scientists to deliver their publications to repositories and to record metadata, it is important that repositories provide an added value for scientists and that recording metadata about their studies becomes easier. The current study explores which quality criteria metadata must fulfill so that repositories can become an efficient tool for scientists and academics. In addition, it is argued that repositories must provide more extensive services and better interconnectedness to achieve this goal. I first discuss published findings from quantitative and qualitative surveys, which were conducted among scientists, to propose conceivable service models. After presenting general quality criteria for metadata, I illustrate how such criteria may be applied in repositories. Furthermore, functional requirements for the single elements of metadata are outlined. Finally, I describe procedures that should be introduced to decrease the efforts required by scientists as far as possible in recording metadata of their publications.

Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is a section design of biographical data from a digital inter-operable library named VESTIGIUM. With this aim, we carried out an in-depth study on the regulation, technology and current projects concerning the information of persons, which we here refer to as biographical data or authority control. We therefore analysed the current level of name authority control, right from the first conceptualisations back in the 19th century, and the usual settings in which this type of data appears: libraries, archives and museums (LAM). We then analysed the current aspects of the new universe in which these abstract entities operate, since they can appear in multiple environments for different uses throughout the World Wide Web. This is the reason why the analysis becomes complex and limited, since authority records may be treated differently according to the context and use. The working method consists of both literature review techniques and fieldwork which aim to find information systems that operate with authority control on the internet as well as cases of use of linked data (LD). The creation of a regulatory framework in terms of name authority data in the scope of archives –International Standard Archival Authority Record For Corporate Bodies, Persons and Families (ISAAR (CPF)) and Encoded Archival Context – Corporate Bodies, Persons and Families (EAC-CPF)-, libraries and information science –Functional Requirements for Authority Data (FRAD), Guidelines for Authority Records and References (GARR), MARC 21 Format for Authority Data, Resource Description and Access (RDA), MARCXML, Metadata Authorities Description Schema (MADS)-, and in the implementation world of recommendations for metadata from the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) –Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI), Resource Description Framework (RDF), Friend to Friend (FOAF), RELATIONSHIP, and BIO- have enabled us to create a prototype that acts as grounds for the inter-operability of biographical data, ensuring visibility at international level. Likewise, the formats of export defined according to the rules and standards of the application actually enable data exchange, taking into account that the use of technologies from the Semantic Web allows the integration of data originating from various systems. The data model proposed in author´s table with contextual information complies with the four basic principles defined by Berners Lee for the publication of linked data. The benefits achieved by using the semantic regulation on the table are the following: improvements in the process of obtaining links between entities semantically similar or related, vocabularies of values, groups of metadata elements or data groups that originate from different sources which in turn also provide this kind of data.

Abstract:
The internet is drastically changing the framework of scholary publishing. Scientific publications are increasingly available to the public over the internet, often replacing those found in classical scientific media such as specialist books and journals. The implementation of an electronic publishing process is prerequisite for the successful distribution of scientific information via internet. This however requires the observance of certain rules and regulations which, if not followed, would threaten to create unwanted island solutions through system incompatibilty. The following work elucidates the technical and legal framework of online publications in the context of copyright amandment and open access movement and introduces projects and initiatives which deal within the area of scholary publishing. Further interviews serve to explore problem areas of the current publishing process of master theses. Finally, based on a solution analysis as well as on previous expositions, an electronic publishing process is shaped.

Delimiting the object of study for understanding the conversion of analog bibliographic records to MARC 21 Bibliographic format, from the syntactic and semantic analysis of records described in patterns of descriptive metadata structure and content standards. The thesis of this research is that the syntactic and semantic principles of bibliographic records, defined by schemas describing and cataloging the display, in the standards of descriptive metadata structure and content standards, determine the process of converting bibliographic records MARC21 Format for Bibliographic. Based on this context, the proposition of this research is to develop a theoretical study of the syntax and semantics of bibliographic records, by the Linguistic bias, with Saussure and Hjelmslev, which subsidize the conversion of analog bibliographic records to MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic a computational interpreter . With this proposal, it is stated, as a general goal, develop a theoretical-conceptual model of syntax and semantics in bibliographic records from Saussureano hjelmslevianos and linguistic studies of the manifestations of human language, which is applicable to a computational interpreter aimed to conversion bibliographic records to MARC 21 Bibliographic format. To reach this goal it is through the following specific objectives, divided in two groups and directed respectively to the theoretical-conceptual model of syntactic structure and semantics of bibliographic records, and the conversion of their records process: explain the relationship between syntax and semantics of bibliographic in the light of linguistic aspects studied by Saussure and Hjelmslev, applicable to analog and digital media records; submit characteristic principles of syntax and semantics in bibliographic records; look through the available literature, the methods and procedures for conversion of bibliographic records to MARC 21 Bibliographic format; set method of image processing bibliographic records in analog optical character recognition (OCR) software; present computational interpretation technique that is focused on the conversion of analog bibliographic records to MARC 21 Bibliographic Format to consider the syntactic and semantic schemas. In view of the outlined objectives, the methodological approach of the research is based on a qualitative approach, exploratory, descriptive and experimental basis and uses the literature. As a result, it is expected to contribute significantly to the Information Science Similarly, considering social, inherent in human knowledge and the solution of the problem presented aspects. The greatest social benefit occasioned by this research relates closely, the aspects of sharing bibliographic records, and the possibility of extending access to the metadata of information resources represented by the various units of information. Contributions theoretically can be glimpsed on the development of issues related to syntactic and semantic aspects of bibliographic records, and involve, at one time, the interdisciplinary Information Science, Computer Science and Linguistics. Contributions in the practical field are identified by the study include the development of Scan for MARC, a computational interpreter that can be adopted by any institution wishing to make use of conversion databases of bibliographic records procedure, to MARC21 format Library from the description and visualization of bibliographic records (AACR2R and ISBD), that character is considered innovative research schemes.

Abstract:
Subject of this diploma thesis are portal solutions for the presentation of electronic collections, including a market review and criteria for the acquisition decision from heilbronn business school´s point of view. In this thesis the heilbronn business school is presented and relevant basic conditions for the implementation of a portal solution are considered. Within the second part, the thesis focuses on the analysis of the term „portal“ and points out the features and elements of portal solutions. In the following the results of an interview with comparable universities are presented and a market review, introducing portal vendors and their portal solutions, is presented. Important aspects for the acquisition of a portal solution, relating to heilbronn business school´s perspective, are developed in the last part of the thesis. Finally an acquisition recommendation is given.

Abstract:
The study examines preconditions to adopt semantic web technologies for a novel specialized medium of scholarly communication that – also interdisciplinary – enables the synchronicity of publication and knowledge representation on the one hand and the dynamic bundling of assertions on the other hand. Therefore it is first of all necessary to determine a concept of „(scholarly) publication“ and of neighbouring concepts. These considerations are fertilized by theories that can be related to the radical constructivism. Therefrom derives a critique of the mainstream of knowledge representation that resigns to being not able to represent the dynamics of knowledge. Finally the study evinces a conceptual outline of a technical system that is built upon the known concept of nanopublications and is called „scholarly network“. The increased effort while publishing in the scholarly network is outweighed by the benefits of this publication medium: It may help to render research outputs more precisely as well as to raise their connectivity through reducing the complexity of assertions. Beyond that it would generate an openly accessible and finely structured discourse archive – a wide participation provided.
