Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
II can.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This article examines the interplay of political identity, territory, and institutional change in Belgium. Political mobilization has gradually reshaped the territorial constitution of political institutions, and with it, group identities. Politicians have chosen to abandon a unitary state structure and instead establish a federation of Regions and Communities, both of which are territorially delimited but have different functions. As contention over language policy and language-use assessment has grown, Belgians have decided to favor territoriality over language use in matters of governance. This decision has not been without significant effects on identity-based politics. The analysis presented here shows how group mobilization can alter the institutional and territorial structures of group interaction and that these structural changes affect future options available to groups.

Abstract:
The article examines modern theoretical and empirical problems of territorial identity in rural and urban social space. The relevance of these problems is determined by the fact that application of the theory of social identity can be used as a “heuristic lens” for the study, operationalization and verification of identity formation processes in their interconnection with social changes in socio-cultural and geographical contexts. The article uses identity process theory and social representations research as theoretical basis adopting concepts of “status symbols” and “status value”, various components of which can be operationalized in questions about identity contents, its structure and internal processes, as well as motivational principles that individuals are guided by. The empirical basis is the study of territorial identity in 2006-2021, conducted by a research team of sociologists of University of Tyumen. Evidence of the importance of identity processes in the verbalization of social representations about territory image is obtained from the respondents’ evaluations of the symbols of their settlement, region, country and world as a whole. The analysis of the obtained data on the territorial identity of the Tyumen region, Russia in 2006-2021 shows residents’ attitude to the region. It is revealed that there is a positive dynamics of emotional connection to one’s place of residence, defined as a positive territorial identity («I am glad that I live here»), which appears in an increase in the corresponding share among respondents (from 31% in 2006 to 43% in 2021). The development of regional identity is associated with respondents’ higher professional status, higher social well-being, and relatively higher income. Meanwhile downward trend of territorial identity of the residents of rural areas and smaller cities is detected in their general unwillingness to connect the future of their children with the settlement of their birth and current residence.

Abstract:
Paper takes a territory as a social construct and relational concept, according to which a society is seen as being in a constant process of deterritorilaization and retrriatorialization. First part of the paper focuses on transformation of territorial identity of individuals, from identity of island towards identity based on selective association of various territorial levels, or from old to new localism. Second part of the paper connects dimensions of territorial identity with the concepts of new regionalism and glocalism, which are related to local-global dichotomy, and issues on local development based on endogenous resources within the global context. The main arguments are driven at the conceptual level, but both parts of the paper also rely on empirical insights from the research ?Changes in basic structures of society in Serbia?, conducted by the Institute for Sociological Research, Faculty of Philosophy University of Belgrade, on the representative sample for citizens in Serbia (N=2557), in 2012. Empirical data illustrate that territorial identity of respondents has been profiled through selective association of different territorial levels. However, only half of respondents (44,7%) feel attached to any supranational territory, while such attachment is not considerably related to respondents? structural and value characteristics. Besides that, respondents show relatively low level of glocalism, which, in accordance to new regionalism, is taken as local actors? readiness for global connections through strategies based on locally specific resources.

Abstract:
Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical ideas about impression management are applied to analyze four historical photographs of deceased children. The photographs are archived at the Alaska State Library and were taken during Alaska’s territorial-colonialist era. This article explains how living photographic subjects, who are often unseen but are symbolized through items visible in the photograph, work with viewers to co-construct social identities of themselves and of the dead children in the photographs. I propose that participants—the seen and unseen subjects, the photographer, and the receiving audience—engage in what Goffman calls frontstage and backstage work to co-construct social identities for the dead children and for the living survivors and to manage the impressions given by the visual images. Further, I propose that the social identities portrayed in the photographs were shaped by social forces and symbol systems external to the persons and settings visible in the images. This article demonstrates that the social systems of family, religion, ethnicity, and gender are especially powerful in co-constructing the symbolic social identities of the participants in the photographs under study. Other issues considered are the social systems of racism, ethnocentrism, and assimilationist policies that targeted Native and immigrant peoples.

Abstract There are different levels of territorial identity perceived as a sense of belonging to a particular social and territorial community. People residing in any region identify themselves with these levels to a different degree. Since 2001, the authors have been doing sociological research into the territorial identity of the population of the Kaliningrad region, which became a Russia’s exclave after the demise the USSR. The research shows that residents of the Kaliningrad region associate themselves with different territorial communities to a varying degree starting with an ever strengthening sense of national identity, followed by the regional and local identity. The sense of macro-regional (European) and global identity is significantly lower.

Abstract:
The aim of the article is to analyze the territorial identity of the inhabitants of Czechia and Slovakia with an emphasis on interregional disparities. The territorial identity of the inhabitants represents their territorial consciousness, their relationship to formal territorial units with some degree of administration. Paper is divided into two main parts – the first part deals with the issue of territorial identity and the second part deals with the analysis of current territorial consciousness of the inhabitants of Czechia and Slovakia. When analyzing the current territorial identity, we pay attention to both the comparison of the consciousness of the inhabitants of Czechia and Slovakia and interregional differences regarding the degree of such consciousness. The source of our data necessary for the analysis is taken from the ISSP 2003 survey programme called “National Identity II”.

Abstract:
This article provides some of the first individual-level evidence for the domestic salience of territorial issues. Using survey data from more than 80,000 individual respondents in 43 separate countries, we examine how conflict affects the content of individual self-identification. We find that international conflict exerts a strong influence on the likelihood and content of individual self-identification, but this effect varies with the type of conflict. Confirming nationalist theories of territorial salience, territorial conflict leads the majority of individuals in targeted countries to identify themselves as citizens of their country. However, individuals in countries that are initiating territorial disputes are more likely to self-identify as members of a particular ethnicity, which provides support for theories connecting domestic salience to ethnic politics. That conflict has variegated effects on identity formation suggests the relationship is not endogenous. Our within-case analysis of changes in Nigerian self-identifications further demonstrates that individuals are quite susceptible to the types and locations of international conflict.

The authors base their research on observations and in the literature concerning different forms of mobility of human beings and food products, distances and territorial anchoring. They continue by addressing the paradoxes in acculturation processes that occur during identity (re)construction in food consumption and eating habits. They focus on the role of cross-border migration, in the spreading of genuine country-specific products and/or local food specialties of migrant populations in their host countries. What are the different definitions of the distance/s between the migrant and his home country and the host culture? What role does the migrant play in the spreading of these eating habits? How does the acculturation process work? What different forms of territorial anchoring account the spreading of these genuine country-specific foods?

Abstract:
Aggressive manifestations of localism are a current concern among surfers and are becoming well known as a result of specialized media. The objective of this paper was to investigate this phenomenon through the examination of a specific case and empirical fieldwork that was conducted for an ethnography of São Paulo surfers. The data were obtained via participant observations and open interviews. The results indicate that conflicts generally begin as disputes over the best waves. Surfing has a general rule of "wave priority criteria," based on spatial positioning. However, this universal rule may be intentionally broken depending on surfers' sociability. Ethnic and class differences based on historical processes can exist in oppositional relationships among surfers and are manifested by categories of accusation or identity (in São Paulo's case, local, haole, roots, prego, and playboy). However, this category attribution is contextual and interchangeable because surfers circulate between groups and beaches while searching for waves.

Abstract:
AND CULTURE AMONG THE KALUNGA: beyond the culturalismABSTRACTThis article presents a discussion about the identity resignifications that occurred in a remaining Quilombo community called Kalunga, located in northeast of the state of Goiás, Brazil, ranging from its formation and from the recognition of these communities by the Brazilian Federal Constitution of 1988. The recognition adds new identity problems that appear in the way in which the group experiences and organizes the territory. Considering an ethnographic study, I try to demonstrate that the ethnicity of the group is based on its own social and territorial organization, and that it is not possible to identify an object of limited contours – neither color, “race” or African culture, nor Quilombo origin – in which the individuals face each other and from which they inaugurate their identity. Key words: Ethnographie; Identité; Territorialité; Les Marrons; Culture; Reconnaissance

Abstract:
Abstract: The objective of the article is to identify the endogenous factors that have slowed down local development, as well as those that could promote it in the municipalities of the southwest of the State of Mexico. It is the product of a study that was developed from the construction of a qualitative methodological proposal that made it possible to identify the incidence of policies and the role played by local actors in promoting local development. The variables that were considered for the analysis are: territorial factors, the role of local actors, and identity as a factor that promotes development. For this, four municipalities with similar characteristics were selected: Amatepec, Luvianos, Tejupilco and Tlatlaya. The results showed that in the four study municipalities a policy with a top-down approach appears as a constant, focused on the economic dimension, which does not consider participatory mechanisms and local identity as factors that can promote local development. The conclusions obtained reaffirm the proposal to satisfy the needs and demands of a population, through the participation of the members of the local community in development processes, also considering their identity elements, by virtue of the fact that they favor the sense of belonging and social cohesion, which in turn generate and promote local initiatives and participatory mechanisms for solving common problems. Key words: territorial factors, local actors, identity, policies.

This study focuses on the analysis of place attachment related to the elements of territorial identity in Oraviţa, a small town in the Mountainous Banat. Oraviţa played a highly significant role from an economic and administrative point of view during the Austrian domination: it was the urban centre that coordinated the mining activity on the territory of Mountainous Banat. This study aims to assess the place attachment to several symbolic buildings in Oraviţa that have been identified as elements of territorial identity. In order to fulfil the purpose of this study, the following research questions were established: What are the main elements of territorial identity in Oraviţa represented in postcards over time? Which of the identified elements of territorial identity are currently being promoted and valued by the local public administration? What are the elements of territorial identity of Oraviţa to which the population is attached? From a methodological point of view, the authors used postcards to identify the elements of territorial identity. Subsequently, the place attachment to the representative historical buildings of Oraviţa was interpreted based on the analysis of the information posted on sites developed by members of the local community. In conclusion, the authors highlighted the particular characteristics of the urban fabric of Oraviţa and their various ways of use, elements through which the physical and social attachment of the local population were preserved.

Abstract:
The issue of identity becomes a subject of an enlarged interest especially in view of progressing European integration. This paper is a reflection on the growing extent of the consciousness of European territorial identity and tries to uncover the underlying factors of this development. It is empirically well documented that Europeans can be increasingly characterized by multiple territorial identities, i.e. simultaneous identities to a variety of territorial communities. It is argued that exclusive identities as an inseparable part of European history and memory acted as one of trigger mechanisms of nationalism. Therefore, the shift from exclusive identities to the over-arching European identity seems to be desirable supplement to the current integration process. There is ample evidence that European administration supports the creation of European identity. Officially, fostered idea of European identity has found a striking and unexpected ally in the form of globalisation. Global processes became one of the stimuli of the growth of multiple territorial identities. Since the same applies to European territorial identity, individuals increasingly find themselves within European territorial identity, individuals increasingly find themselves within European context as well. The main aim of this article is thus to illuminate and conceptualise the relation between globalisation and territorial identities, with special emphasis on European territorial identity.
