Abstract:
This research project examined the potential for circumventing drawing in the ideation process by adopting digital sculpture as the primary conceptual development and design tool for the digital sculpting of creature designs. Through a series of experimental research cycles, multiple frameworks were explored with the aim of identifying a methodology for creating '3D sculpted sketches' for the initial phases of the ideation process. This research project acknowledges that drawing still remains the predominant method of visualising design ideas for characters and creatures for many artists. However, alongside other ideation techniques digital sculpting can function as a rapid and responsive tool to visualize and explore forms in a digital sculpting environment for the conceptualisation of multiple creature design variations. The results of this study are significant for emerging digital sculptors who may not necessarily have a well-defined creative brief or initial concept.

Abstract:
Ideation, the selection and arrangement of information to build a text, though a necessary skill for tertiary students, is not satisfactorily addressed in writing skills textbooks for English as a Second Language/English for Academic Purposes. To develop a pedagogical approach to ideation, teachers need a theory of language. The most fruitful theory is systemic-functional linguistics, but systemic-functional theory has not yet fully developed a theory of ideation. A related theory, Rhetorical Structure Theory, offers a useful tool to analyse ideation both in well formed model texts and, with slight modification, in not well formed student texts. With Rhetorical Structure Theory, the analyst can separate semantic value from syntax. The resulting analysis indicates with clarity certain problem areas in ideation which teachers need to address. Teachers are thus better equipped to devise teaching approaches to address ideation in the classroom.

Ekströmer, Philip. "A first sketch of Computer Aided Ideation : Exploring CAD tools as externalization media in design ideation." Licentiate thesis, Linköpings universitet, Maskinkonstruktion, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-162022.

Full text
Abstract:
Even though Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools have changed the way designers work in most parts of the design process, designers still mostly use pen-and-paper sketching when generating design ideas. Previous studies exploring the use of CAD tools for design ideation have concluded that the tools available at the time did not support reflective conversation, serendipitous interpretation and creativity, making them unsuited for design ideation. However, many of these studies used tools now considered obsolete, implying that the conclusions might no longer be valid. With the variety and capabilities of current CAD tools, there is an opportunity for a new exploration of CAD tools in design ideation. The aim of this licentiate thesis was to explore the use of CAD tools as externalization media in design ideation, what effect this has on the ideation process and how CAD tools might support design ideation. To this end, the thesis explored the use of CAD tools in design ideation in four studies. The first study consisted of a literature review on the strengths and weaknesses of sketches and CAD tools and a focus group discussion with three design experts. The second study compared master theses to explore how design representations used in the design process affect the breadth of design space exploration. The third study was a case study with two cases featuring the use of game engines and Virtual Reality for automotive lighting design and the fourth study compared the workflow in VR-sketching and pen-and- paper sketching. The results of the studies in this thesis suggest that the notion that CAD tools are not useful for design ideation is no longer true. Based on expert evaluations and case studies, this thesis concludes that there are several opportunities for the use of CAD tools in design ideation. This is certainly true in design fields where it is difficult to make sketches. The potential strengths of using CAD tools for design ideation includes the ability to design in full scale and the ability to perform instantaneous transform operations, such as scaling and deforming. However, the ability to instantly undo in CAD tools has been identified as both a potential strength and potential a weakness for design ideation. While being able to rapidly undo mistakes could be beneficial to the ideation process, achieving a faster workflow with less time redoing and more time working on creating, this might also result in fewer opportunities for reinterpretation. The conclusions in this thesis provide arguments for the use of CAD tools in design ideation, which could lead to new ways of generating, working with and thinking about design ideas. The findings also act as a stepping stone for further studies in the area of Computer Aided Ideation.

Abstract:
Research suggests that substance use is a risk factor for increased suicidal ideation. This study explored the relationship between substance use, suicidal ideation, and impulsivity in a sample of college students and individuals seeking outpatient treatment. Participants were interviewed for information on severity of suicidal ideation and substance use. Participants completed the Psychiatric Diagnostic Screening Questionnaire, the substance use section of the Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM-IV, the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, the Scale for Suicide Ideation, and the UPPS-P Impulsivity Behavior Scale. These measures were used to determine the amount of variance in suicidal ideation accounted for by substance use. Variables reflecting substance use classification, frequency, and severity were used to predict severity of suicidal ideation.

Abstract:
The design and development of commercial AAA videogames is a difficult and complex endeavor. It involves large development teams that together aim to create high quality, entertaining games that sell well. Up to now, very few scholars have documented or problematized this practice. This thesis presents a study of the design practices in big game development studios that make commercial AAA videogames. The study focuses on the so called ideation part of videogame development, in which the design ideas are generated, developed and communicated in the work team. The primary data comes from interviews conducted with seven Swedish game developers, but a large quantity of secondary data has also been used. The study shows that the design practice in many studios is to focus on the player experience instead of game features. To secure the intended player experience, the studios have moved away from "big design up front" in the form of classical game design documents, and are instead using a variety of verbal, visual and audial tools to articulate and communicate their vision of the game-to-be. In the thesis, I coin the term lodestars to denote these articulations of the main game concept and the intended player experience. I then move on to describe, exemplify and categorize them. The main purpose of lodestars is to allow everyone in the development team to make design choices in line with a commonly shared design vision in order to create a unified player experience.

Walters, David Anthony. "Suicidal ideation as a cognitive trait of personality." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 1989. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.306610.

Full text
Abstract:
The present study operationalizes suicidal ideation by deriving an assessment scale which characterizes the construct as a cognitive trait of personality (Hundleby, 1972; Wiggins, 1973; Scott et al., 1979). A questionnaire has been devised which incorporates 10 independent variable scales (Depression, Hopelessness, Death Anxiety, Manifest Anxiety, Sociability, Impulsiveness, Locus of Control, Defensiveness, Lie Scale and Questionnaire Evaluation/Clarification of Death Cognitions) in addition to the dependent variable of suicidal ideation, SIA. It has been distributed to two broad-spectrum samples of students (University of Aberdeen, N = 110 and University of Alberta, N = 203) in order to investigate the cognitive/structural aspect of this 'nomological net', hypothesized to represent the 'presuicidal syndrome' (Ringel, 1976), in trait terms at both the 'macrostructural' and the 'microstructural' levels of analysis. Through a methodology which may be described as that of 'empirically-based conceptualizing' (Royce, 1973), hypotheses investigated at the global/macrostructural level support the viability of characterizing suicidal ideation in both cognitive/personality and trait/structural terms, as operationalized by the SIA Scale. This objective is similarly met at the microstructural level, with attempts at item/scale analysis suggesting that SIA functions as an appropriate psychometric instrument, given its 'quasi-scale' qualities of unidimensionality and cumulativeness (Guttman, 1971). However, in its brevity it falls short in addressing the overall aim of 'prediction linked to prevention'. Using a correlational model, an augmented operationalization/measure of suicidal ideation is forwarded in SIB: the Suicide Ideation as a Cognitive Trait Scale (SICTS). The resulting 35-item scale demonstrates linearity in its interaction with macrolevel nomological net variables and the ability to discriminate between high and low scoring individuals on composite scale items, as well as on cognitive/linguistic statements external to the nomological net. In addition, an enriched factor structure integrates well with both psychodynamic theory and clinical evidence, suggesting that the SIB Scale, SICTS, demonstrates promising relevance to the estimation of suicide risk, i.e., as this venture is linked to efforts at prevention through diagnosis and cognitive therapy.

Abstract:
This paper aims to provide the grounds for a biopsychosocial understanding of the underpinnings of conspiracy theorist ideation by studying research articles from different scientific disciplines. Cross-disciplinary concurring results are presented and discussed, as well as some examples of how conspiracy theories have been used during the 20th century. Also discussed is how this is used in political discourse in the populist climate of today, with the rise of radical right-wing movements, the justification of “alternative facts” from higher governmental ranks, and religious fundamentalism, making it a societal issue of possible big magnitude. Neurological similarities was found between religiousness and proneness to conspiracy theory ideation, and the articles concerning neural correlates therefore stem from research on religious individuals due to the lack of neuro-biopsychological research on actual conspiracy theorists. Since conspiracy theory ideation has shown the ability to cause negative consequences it is also advised that governmental agencies and society as a whole revise its stance on populism and the spread of flawed information, in order to maintain an open society. Also presented are a few ideas on how to begin countering the rise of populism.

Abstract:
Purpose – The paper reports on an ongoing research project of TU Dresden Laboratory of Knowledge Architecture aiming the investigations of the traceability and visualization of upcoming ideas and topics within discussions. Communication and conversation analysis – to explore knowledge processes communication and interaction analyses emerged as a central scientific approach. Hereby knowledge creation and Knowledge Transfer are understood as collective and co-creative effort. Corresponding analysis tools and methods have been developed for the communication- and knowledge creation processes digital media extensively (Faraj et al 2011). However, research focusing on direct and immediate conversation, and not only based on digital media, rarely exists. Development requirements – The existing tools for the analysis of digital communication data are yet not widely applied in the domain of spoken discussions. Whereas communication processes in the digital domain create their data automatically, the data from natural settings have to be extracted laboriously (Tonfoni 2004). Since there are no effective methods on data recording of voice communication yet existing, there are no strong and evident methods on computer aided conversation tracking and analysing existing too. The Ideagram tool tries to overcome this shortcoming. Approach – A prototype of a transcription, visualization and analysis tool was designed, which is able to capture discussions by keywords and analyse them in real-time. The results are presented in several forms: histograms, semantic networks and mixtures between both. These visualizations allow identifying topic and concept dynamics, heuristic paths and creative moments. Central features of the discussion like knowledge communication, orientation for innovation and speech efficiency can be understood and designed. In the different figures - Ideagram - of spoken discussions the logged content is visualised. The program prototype counts the occurrence of the logged words. These can be marked within a chronological re-presentation graph and shows at what time which issue was discussed. By “peaks” and “valley’s” it is obviously visible where the talk was most or least active. The prototype tool allows analysing the used phrases according to their frequency and their appearance during the captured conversation. Practical implications & Value – In contrast of conventional protocol and transcription techniques this kind of knowledge mining allows a greater information bandwidth and a more efficient access on core topics, thematic conflicts, idea generation etc. Experiences in very different settings created a very rich data set and allows to state that the application in business and science seems to very useful according to recording, analysing and deepening of spoken discussions. Hence, the Ideagram is still a prototype version and need further investigation and development.

Full text
Abstract:
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD
The publication A South African Boxer in Britain contains the unique aesthetic of the Cape Town born boxer Andrew Jeptha, the first black fighter to win a British welterweight title in 1907. The booklet was published in 1910 to offer pecuniary relief to the blinded author (Jeptha) who incurred the affliction during the very match that secured him the title. Thus, although masquerading as a ‘light read’ of sporting achievements and memories from abroad, I argue the booklet authorises a complex thinking on text, disability and boxing. The thesis takes care to present the publication as a crucial historical work that offers a level of psychic and racial strategy not naturally thought to exist in the genesis of a turn-of-the-century boxer. The textual ideation manifest in Jeptha’s booklet is mooted within the thesis as distinctive in its accommodation of both desire and difference, rendering a calculation that sees the text not as the deserted boundary where ‘mind’ and ‘flesh’ depart, but rather as a particular bibliographic configuration where both these worlds meet in a moment that remands reductive views of the gladiator and his words of care.

Abstract:
Background: Recent analyses have described metabolomic markers for depression and suicidal ideation in non-pregnant adults. We examined the metabolomic profile of antepartum depression and suicidal ideation during mid-pregnancy, a time of high susceptibility to mood disorders. Methods: We collected fasting blood from 100 pregnant Peruvian women and profiled 307 plasma metabolites using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. We used the Patient Health Questionnaire 9 to define antepartum depression (score ≥ 10) and suicidal ideation (having thoughts that you would be better off dead, or of hurting yourself). Logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios (ORs). Results: Three triacylglycerol metabolites (C48:5 triacylglycerol [OR = =1.89; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.14–3.14], C50:6 triacylglycerol [OR = =1.88; 95%CI: 1.13–3.14], C46:4 triacylglycerol [OR = =1.89; 95%CI: 1.11–3.21]) were associated with higher odds of antepartum depression and 4 metabolites (betaine [OR = =0.56; 95%CI:0.33–0.95], citrulline [OR = =0.58; 95%CI: 0.34–0.98], C5 carnitine [OR = =0.59; 95%CI: 0.36–0.99], C5:1 carnitine [OR = =0.59; 95%CI: 0.35–1.00]) with lower odds of antepartum depression. Twenty-six metabolites, including 5-hydroxytryptophan (OR = =0.52; 95%CI: 0.30–0.92), phenylalanine (OR = =0.41; 95%CI: 0.19–0.91), and betaine (OR = =0.53; 95%CI: 0.28–0.99) were associated with lower odds of suicidal ideation. Limitations: Our cross-sectional study could not determine whether metabolites prospectively predict outcomes. No metabolites remained significant after multiple testing correction; these novel findings should be replicated in a larger sample. Conclusions: Antepartum suicidal ideation metabolomic markers are similar to markers of depression among non-pregnant adults, and distinct from markers of antepartum depression. Findings suggest that mood disorder in pregnancy shares metabolomic similarities to mood disorder at other times and may further understanding of these conditions’ pathophysiology.

Eisner, Lori Rachel. "A Transdiagnostic Model of Suicidal Ideation and Suicide Attempts." Scholarly Repository, 2010. http://scholarlyrepository.miami.edu/oa_dissertations/358.

Full text
Abstract:
Suicide is one of the most tragic issues in mental health. Suicide has traditionally been studied as an outcome of specific psychiatric disorders. The goal of this study was to consider whether there might be underlying dimensions across psychiatric disorders that are related to suicidality. This study proposed a transdiagnostic model of suicidality. Psychiatric symptoms were hypothesized to load onto three factors: Negative Mood, Impulsivity, and Arousal. Factors were then examined as predictors of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. Data were drawn from the National Comorbidity Survey-Replication Study (NCS-R). Structured interviews were conducted in two parts using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI). All survey respondents (N = 9,282) were administered the core diagnostic assessment. Those who met criteria for a psychiatric disorder, met subthreshold lifetime criteria and sought treatment at some time in their life, or ever in their life made a plan to commit or attempt suicide were administered Part II of the interview and are the sample of interest in this study (N = 5,692). The sample was representative of non-institutionalized civilian adults ages 18 or older whose primary language was English. Factor analyses revealed three modified factors: a Negative Mood/Emotional Arousal factor, a Negative Thinking factor, and a Recurrent Substance Use factor. Negative Mood/Emotional Arousal was a strong predictor of suicidal ideation. Suicidal ideation mediated the relationship between Negative Mood/Emotional Arousal and suicide attempts, controlling for Negative Thinking. Negative Thinking, Recurrent Substance Use, and suicidal ideation predicted suicide attempts. When number of suicide attempts was examined as the dependent variable, the model did not fit the data, suggesting that these factors were not as helpful in predicting highly recurrent suicide attempts. Recurrent Substance Use moderated the relationship between Negative Mood/Emotional Arousal and suicide attempts, demonstrating that, as negative mood increases, people with high levels of recurrent substance use are more likely to make a suicide attempt compared to people with mean or low levels of recurrent substance use. In sum, results of this study support two distinct pathways to making a suicide attempt: a direct relationship between negative thinking and suicide attempts, as well as an interaction between negative mood/emotional arousal and recurrent substance use. Several limitations including issues of sampling, the cross-sectional nature of the data, self-report bias, and the structure of the CIDI instrument, were taken into account in interpreting the results. Clinical implications and future directions for research are discussed.

Abstract:
Suicide, the endpoint of the continuum that begins with suicide ideation, is known to be an important precursor of attempted suicides. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of suicide ideation of police members and to determine the differences between suicide ideation of various demographic variables, in particular, the gender, rank and race groups of police members. The convenience sample (N = 111) was drawn from police stations in the Nelson Mandela Metropole in the Eastern Cape Province. The Adult Suicide Ideation Questionnaire (ASIQ) and a Biographical Questionnaire were administered. The results indicated that 1.4 % of the sample showed significant levels of suicidal ideation scoring a high score above 31 (i.e., above the 97th percentile by ASIQ). The T-test, One-way (ANOVA) and the Pearson Chi-Square analysis showed no significant differences between suicide ideation and the demographic variables based on the police station, age, gender, race, rank, years of service, years of current position, educational qualifications, marital status, presence of medical conditions, number of alcoholic drinks consumed per week, smoking behaviour and exercise behaviour. However, participants with previous suicide attempts had significant high scores on ASIQ.

Clark, Anita Lynn. "Is Mindset Related to Resilience, Depression, and Suicidal Ideation?" Thesis, Northcentral University, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10784185.

Full text
Abstract:

In the United States suicide is the second leading cause of death for 15-24 year olds. It is the tenth leading cause of death in the general population. The United States Surgeon General made a call to action to address this epidemic. The call was for more research for screening and interventions for those at risk for depression and suicide. Research has suggested that individuals adopt implicit mindsets that inhibit their ability to cope with adversity, rendering them less resilient and more susceptible to succumbing to depression and suicidal ideation. Growth mindset has been positively correlated with resilience in a variety of contexts. The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate growth mindset in the context of emotions to discern if there was a relationship between emotional growth mindset and depression and suicidal ideation. Specifically, this study investigated the predictive power of emotional growth mindset on depression and suicide. Online surveys were administered to 164 participants. The surveys measured emotional growth mindset, depression and suicidal ideation. Multiple regression analyses were performed using SPSS to discern relationships between variables. The results indicated a negative relationship between variables. Emotional growth mindset was negatively correlated with both depression and suicidal ideation. However, the relationship was only strong enough to be predictive of suicidal ideation (r( N=164)=-.249,p=.001). This suggests that emotional growth mindset could be an effective screening tool for those at risk for suicide. More research is needed to confirm the results of this study as well as investigate growth mindset’s potential as an intervention for those at risk for suicide.

Prévost, Marie. "Information processing in healthy people with delusional- like ideation." Thesis, McGill University, 2010. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=92346.

Full text
Abstract:
Experiences that resemble delusions of psychiatric patients can be observed in the general healthy population. These experiences, named hereafter delusional-like ideations, are not the only fact in line with the idea that there is a continuum between clinical delusions and normality. Previous research suggests that at least two types of cognitive bias could be common to patients and healthy subjects: first, a tendency to jump to conclusions, which can play a role in the formation of delusional ideation and second, abnormal semantic processes, which could lead to the maintenance of these ideations. The present thesis was aimed at further investigating these two biases in the general population to see whether further support can be obtained for the continuum view. In addition, the impact of current paranoid feelings on these cognitive biases was assessed in these healthy participants.
The tendency to jump to conclusion was evaluated with a reasoning task. Healthy people with delusional-like ideation needed less information to reach a conclusion than people without or with few delusional-like ideations, replicating findings obtained in deluded patients. Furthermore, paranoid feelings strengthened the relationship between delusional-like ideation and this jump to conclusion style of thinking. Results also show that people with delusional-like ideation jump to new conclusions when they experienced paranoid feelings, a finding that only tended to be significant when no paranoid feelings were induced. These results provide further support to the continuum idea and to the hypothesis that the jump to conclusion bias may be involved in delusion formation.
On the other hand, semantic processes of healthy participants were investigated by recording the N400 event-related brain potential in a semantic categorization task. When paranoid feelings were induced, delusional-like ideation scores were associated with smaller raw N400 amplitudes, as was found in schizophrenia patients with delusions. The analysis of the independent components of the N400 potential showed that delusional-like ideation had an influence on the N400 even when no paranoid feelings were induced. These results suggest that semantic processing of people with delusional-like ideation can be modulated by their current mental state. The implications for delusion formation and maintenance are explored.
In conclusion, both the results of the jump to conclusion and those of the semantic processes studies lend further support to the idea of a continuum between clinical delusions and delusional-like ideation.

Abstract:
Patients with psychosis comprise a high-risk group in terms of suicide behaviors especially in the early phases. Suicide ideation on the other hand acts as the starting point along the chain of suicide. However less is known about suicide ideation among patients at their first-episode psychosis (FEP). Present study investigated contributing factors in suicidal ideation among FEP patients in Hong Kong. FEP outpatients (N=20) and normal controls (N=20) were invited to complete a set of self-assessment questionnaires. These questionnaires measured a wide range of potential risk factors including hopelessness, impulsiveness, reasons for living, insight, drug-attitude and treatment satisfaction. Results showed that patients have a higher occurrence-rate of suicide ideation (45%) compared to patients without ideation. Ideators were significantly more hopeless, impulsive, more aware of their illness and having fewer survival & coping beliefs. Taken together, current study extended the stress-diathesis model in explaining suicidal behaviors among psychotic patients. We also demonstrated that insight in patients plays a role in interacting with suicide ideation. Further, since hopelessness appeared to be the strongest associative factor among all, this study has implications on prevention work focusing on hope maintenance.

Kirtley, Olivia Jane. "A psychophysiological investigation of self-harm ideation and enactment." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2015. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/7162/.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Many individuals have thoughts of self-harm, but only a proportion act upon them and engage in self-harm behaviour. Currently, our ability to differentiate which individuals who think about self-harm will translate those thoughts into actions, is limited, and is a critically important area for future research to inform suicide prevention efforts. This thesis presents three empirical studies underpinned by the recently proposed model of suicidal behaviour, the Integrated Motivational-Volitional model (IMV; O’Connor, 2011), which specifically makes predictions about factors which differentiate between suicidal thoughts and behaviours. Two putative variables within this model may be sensitivity to emotional and physical pain; indeed threshold and tolerance for physical pain have been found to be elevated in individuals who have engaged in self-harm, relative to healthy controls. Furthermore, previous research has suggested that elevated physical pain tolerance may be potentiated by an individual’s state of distress. Emotional pain sensitivity, however, has been demonstrated to be reduced in those who have engaged in self-harm. Whether changes in sensitivity to emotional and physical pain are a cause or a consequence of self-harm, is unknown, and could be an important target for treatment and intervention development. Methods: A systematic review of the literature around physical pain and self-harm (n = 25 studies) was conducted in order to assess the quality and extent of the existing knowledge in this area. Three empirical studies were then conducted investigating the relationship between emotional and physical pain in self-harm ideation and enactment. Two of these (n = 102; n = 88) were laboratory studies, employing a combination of self-report and behavioural measures of emotional and physical pain sensitivity, and one took the form of a large online self-report study (n = 351). Results: The studies within this thesis found no evidence to suggest that behavioural threshold or tolerance for physical pain is elevated in self-harm ideation or enactment. Furthermore, pain tolerance does not appear to differ as a function of stress. Self-reported sensitivity to emotional pain was highest in those who had engaged in self-harm, followed by those who had ideated about self-harm and was lowest in healthy controls. There were no significant associations between self-reported and behavioural measures of emotional and physical pain sensitivity. Negative mood decreased following administration of a painful stimulus for all groups (controls, self-harm ideation and self-harm enactment). As predicted, motivational phase variables within the IMV did not differ significantly between the ideation and enactment groups, however, volitional phase variables did exhibit a significant difference. Conclusions: The findings from this thesis provide some support for the IMV model of suicidal behaviour (O’Connor, 2011), demonstrating that the volitional phase variables impulsivity and exposure to social modelling of self-harm, differentiate between those with thoughts (only) of self-harm and those who have gone on to engage in the behaviour. This is an important finding with implications for intervention and treatment development. The similar pattern of elevated emotional pain sensitivity across self-harm ideation and enactment suggests that this could be a pre-motivational phase variable within the IMV. The lack of expected between-group differences in behavioural measures of emotional and physical pain call into question the findings of previous studies. Furthermore, as neither of the laboratory studies presented within this thesis found significant differences in pain threshold or tolerance between self-harm ideation, self-harm enactment and control groups, there is a clear need for more research in this area.

Träff, Oliver. "A proposed technique for ideation through artifact shape deviations." Thesis, Södertörns högskola, Medieteknik, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:sh:diva-39232.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper proposes a new ideation technique for how to ideate using sketching and a generative design system based prototype tool. The technique is aimed to support ideation through the exploration of design shape deviations. The tool generates 3D model artifacts with variations in their shapes. The overall shape and deviations are based on a design concept specified by the user of the tool. These design artifacts are then used as a means to rediscover one's own design concepts through the theory of estrangement. A study was conducted where university-level design students tested the technique in a scenario where they were tasked with ideating product design solutions. The performed study (along with post-study interviews) revealed promising results where participants of the study described their experiences as fun and interesting. The design outcomes of the study display how participants worked and iterated on their conceptual artifacts. They explored different and new angles of the design space relative to their concepts by using the generated design artifacts. This may suggest that this technique, using computer-generated concept deviations can be a successful way of supporting ideation by expanding on one's design concepts, rediscovering concepts, moving beyond obvious solutions and iterating design concepts.

Layden, Garry. "Room for chaos? : authenticity and performance in undergraduate spatial design students' accounts of ideational work." Thesis, University of Bedfordshire, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10547/622696.

Full text
Abstract:
This study was prompted by my suspicion that spatial design undergraduates’ production of paper-based freehand sketches during design ideation was in decline. Seeking to find out why, I conducted video-recorded focused interviews with undergraduates from a range of UK spatial design degrees, during which we examined their sketchbook material and discussed their ideational activities (termed ‘ideational moves’). I subjected the data to a form of content analysis, but the outcomes appeared to contradict my initial premise whilst revealing that the interactions during the interviews between myself, the respondents and the sketchbook material (termed ‘discursive moves’) warranted examination. This persuaded me that the study’s focus should emerge through ‘evolved’ grounded theory rather than being stated a priori, which highlighted my presence in, and impact on, the data and prompted me to adopt a constructivist grounded theorising approach in combination with actor-network theory’s concepts of translation and circulating references. This study has thus been qualitative, relativist, iterative and multi-modal. Grounded theorising led to the identification of a number of categories and sub-categories of ideational move across the sample, and indicated that the respondents had used a ‘core’ of each. ‘Core’ categories comprised: making paper-based ideational moves, carrying out research and using photographic material. Several respondents also evidenced producing digital imagery and physical models. ‘Core’ sub-categories comprised using paper-based freehand perspective sketches, sketch diagrams and word-based approaches, plus supporting visuo-spatial research. Several respondents also evidenced producing paper-based freehand plan, section and elevation sketches, plus collage. Grounded theorising also revealed that each respondent had utilised a different combination of sub-categories, with different degrees of connectedness. I did not set out to evaluate the design outcomes showcased, but, as a spatial design academic and practitioner, I felt compelled to. This led to the tentative conclusion that respondents who added to the ‘core’ of categories and sub-categories and worked with greater connectedness appeared to produce more thoroughly-considered work, whilst those who forsook the ‘core’ and worked with less connectedness appeared to produce more unexpected results by allowing ‘ ... room for chaos ... ’: periods of confusion and surprise. Regarding the discursive moves, grounded theorising indicated that the sketchbook material tabled by each respondent during the study was not one fixed thing, but an abstraction using placing-for and directing-to techniques to focus attention on certain ideational moves and away from others. This made the sketchbook material a performance within the network of human and non-human actors who, in effect, co-constructed it as a temporary reality without necessarily realising this. Research into sketchbook material appears to regard it, once shared with others, as having the candour of a secret diary, and as eligible for formative and summative assessment because it documents design process authentically. My study, whilst not claiming generalisability, suggests that this view should be challenged. The new knowledge is now informing my future teaching practice and will, I hope, prompt other academics to investigate whether their own students manifest similar outcomes and, through this, contribute to wider discussions on the formative and summative assessment of undergraduate spatial design development activity.

Abstract:
Background. There are few cross-national comparisons of the rates of suicide ideation and attempts across diverse countries. Nine independently conducted epidemiological surveys using similar diagnostic assessment and criteria provided an opportunity to obtain that data. Methods. Suicide ideation and attempts were assessed on the Diagnostic Interview Schedule in over 40000 subjects drawn from the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, France, West Germany, Lebanon, Taiwan, Korea and New Zealand. Results. The lifetime prevalence rates/100 for suicide ideation ranged from 2·09 (Beirut) to 18·51 (Christchurch, New Zealand). Lifetime prevalence rates/100 for suicide attempts ranged from 0·72 (Beirut) to 5·93 (Puerto Rico). Females as compared to males had only marginally higher rates of suicidal ideation in most countries, reaching a two-fold increase in Taiwan. Females as compared to males had more consistently higher rates for suicide attempts, reaching a two- to three-fold increase in most countries. Suicide ideation and attempts in most countries were associated with being currently divorced/separated as compared to currently married. Conclusions. While the rates of suicide ideation varied widely by country, the rates of suicide attempts were more consistent across most countries. The variations were only partly explained by variation in rates of psychiatric disorders, divorce or separation among countries and are probably due to cultural features that we do not, as yet, understand.

Abstract:
This study is an analysis of adolescent risk behaviors contributing to an increased rate of suicidal ideation for 12 to 18 year olds. The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System Survey (YRBSS) is an epidemiologic survey designed to monitor the prevalence of risky behaviors of adolescents in middle and high school1. The YRBSS is a complex sample survey with a three-stage cluster design. Multiple logistic regression is used to analyze the data, including methods of analysis to address issues in complex survey design. Results of this study indicate several different risk factors that influence the rate of suicidal ideation among adolescents, including alcohol and drug use, sexual risky behaviors, unhealthy weight loss methods, depressed mood, sex and race/ethnicity. The conclusions of this study indicate that many risk factors associated with suicidal ideation are behaviors that could be addressed with early intervention strategies to reduce the risk of suicidal ideation.

Abstract:
Who provides better inputs to new product ideation tasks: problem solvers with expertise in the area for which new products are to be developed, or problem solvers from "analogous" markets that are distant but share an analogous problem or need? Conventional wisdom appears to suggest that target market expertise is indispensable, which is why most managers searching for new ideas tend to stay within their own market context even when they do search outside their firms' boundaries. However, in a unique symmetric experiment that isolates the effect of market origin, we find evidence for the opposite: Although solutions provided by problem solvers from analogous markets show lower potential for immediate use, they demonstrate substantially higher levels of novelty. Also compared to established novelty drivers, this effect appears highly relevant from a managerial perspective: we find that including problem solvers from analogous markets vs. the target market accounts for almost two thirds of the well-known effect of involving lead users instead of average problem solvers. This effect is further amplified when the analogous distance between the markets increases, i.e., when searching in far vs. near analogous markets. Finally, results indicate that the analogous market effect is particularly strong in the upper tail of the novelty distribution, which again underscores the effect's practical importance. All this suggests that it might pay to systematically search across firm-external sources of innovation that were formerly out of scope for most managers. (authors' abstract)

Horgan, Harry. "The role of transdiagnostic cognitive behavioural processes in suicidal ideation." Thesis, University of East London, 2017. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/6723/.

Full text
Abstract:
Background. Suicidality has most commonly been studied within a psychiatric framework wherein it is conceptualised as a symptom or outcome of mental disorder. However, the majority of people that meet the criteria for a psychiatric diagnosis do not experience suicidality and a significant number of people that do not meet criteria for a diagnosis struggle with thoughts of suicide. Transdiagnostic approaches offer an approach to understanding and intervening with suicidality unhindered by the poor reliability, validity, and lack of specificity associated with psychiatric diagnosis. Aims. This study first sought to explore differences between people experiencing or not experiencing current suicidality, in terms of engagement in transdiagnostic cognitive and behavioural (TCB) processes. Secondly, the role of TCB processes in relation to suicidality were analysed in terms of their explanatory power when considered simultaneously with established suicide-specific psychological constructs. Method. A cross-sectional design was employed and a mixed sample was recruited (N = 927) through convenience and purposive sampling via an online survey. Regression analyses were performed to explore the ability of the variables to classify participants as experiencing or not experiencing current suicidality. Structural equation models were constructed to test the indirect effects of TCB processes. Results. TCB processes were significantly elevated in participants experiencing current suicidality. This elevated engagement persisted in a subsample of participants that had received a psychiatric diagnosis. TCB processes were not significant predictors of suicidality in the final stage of a regression model, but their inclusion improved goodness-of-fit. Finally, TCB processes had a minor but significant negative moderating effect upon 'desire for suicide' in relation to degree of suicidality. Conclusion. Transdiagnostic psychological constructs and cognitive and behavioural processes offer greater explanatory power for suicidality than does meeting the criteria for a psychiatric diagnosis. TCB processes may act as a means of coping with suicidal desire, however, and may not be indicated as initial targets for intervention.

Abstract:

This exploratory study uses the convergent design of mixed methods to integrate adaptive expertise theory to study how individual student participant from graphic design or non-graphic-design majors to solve a novel ideation problem in graphic design. Adaptive expertise includes six dimensions: metacognition, flexibility, dynamic knowledge, ability to welcome challenges, efficiency and deep understanding of the domain knowledge, and multiple perspectives. Those are desired qualities for a learner to stand out in the global market that are constantly changing with complex challenges. Thirty undergraduate students participated in this study. This study aims to answer four questions: types of graphic design tool and strategies selection and reasoning, similarities and differences among four participant groups, influences of participants’ performance from the prior-experiences, and other potential preconceptions and situations to their reasoning. Four results are identified. Frist, 11 rationales contributed to participants to make their tool usage decision and strategies. Second, participant with more varieties of prior experiences in graphic design would potentially have significantly higher confidence level in their adaptive expertise. Third, participants who performed better in this study, obtained more thorough reflection in design thinking. This result shows that this task requires domain-dependent expertise. Forth, participants’ performance found affected by several non-cognitive preconceptions such as uncertain challenges, adapting in the new work space, and stress management. Future studies need to increase the number of participants to potentially increase statistical significance of the results, and to identify the relationship among factors that affect participants’ performance and exhibition of adaptive expertise. Implications of this study suggests the need to expose learners to diverse types of graphic design experiences and novel tasks/contexts.

Abstract:
Background and Objective: Suicide is a leading cause of death and a critical public health problem among adolescents worldwide. However, adolescent suicidal behaviour is a neglected public health issue, especially in low- and middle-income countries, such as Bangladesh. There is evidence from developed countries showing that suicidal ideation (SI) among adolescents is related to social indicators as well as individual risk factors. Scarce evidence from studies inlow- and middle-income countries suggests that social factors may influence adolescent SI. In Bangladesh, only a few studies have focused on the social determinants of suicide, and the present study is the first to examine the prevalence and social determinants of suicidal ideation among adolescents in rural Bangladesh. Therefore, the present thesis assessed the effects of socioeconomic status (SES) on adolescent SI. Methods: The present thesis is based on two studies, which used data from a cross-sectional survey conducted in 2013 among 2,476 adolescents aged 14-19 years selected randomly in arural community in Bangladesh. An adapted version of the WHO/SUPRE-MISS questionnaire was used to collect data in the Raiganj sub-district, an area surveyed within the Injury Prevention Program of the Centre for Injury Prevention and Research, Bangladesh (CIPRB). Study I estimated the prevalence of suicidal ideation among adolescents and investigated what factors were associated with suicidal ideation. Study II examined the relationship between parental socio-economic factors and suicidal thoughts among adolescents. Results: Study I showed that life time prevalence of suicidal ideation was 5% among adolescents. The majority of adolescents with suicidal ideation were female (67, 5.3%), unmarried (106, 5.5%) and students (86, 6.2%). Suicidal ideation was significantly associated with age, education, occupation and living with parents or others. Respondents aged 18-19 years, had a Secondary school certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary school certificate (HSC) or higher, were day labourers, living without parent had odds ratios of 2.31 (CI 1.46-3.65), 2.38(CI 1.51-3.77), 4.15 (CI 2.41-7.14), .28 (CI 0.13-0.60) and 1.80 (CI 1.07-3.03), respectively. In study 2, results demonstrated that suicidal ideation was more common among adolescents with parents from the low-income group (5.5%). In addition, adolescent SI was found to be significantly associated with parental education, marital status and house ownership. Adolescents whose parents received an SSC or higher had an SI odds ratio of 2.10 (CI 1.21-3.64) and 1.92 (CI 1.15-3.23) for mothers and fathers respectively. Suicidal ideation among adolescents with single parents was higher with an odds ratio of 3.00 (CI 1.75-5.19) in comparison to adolescents who had both parents. Adolescents whose parents owned a house had an odds ratio of 0.14 (0.05, 0.35). Conclusion: The thesis found that the prevalence of lifetime suicidal ideation among adolescents is moderately high in a rural community of Bangladesh. Furthermore, it was observed that personal characteristics such as parental marital status, education and homeownership were statistically significantly associated with suicidal ideation among adolescentseven after adjusting for potential confounders.

Abstract:
Researchers have previously identified substance use and borderline personality disorder as factors that increase risk for suicidal thoughts and behaviors. This study explored the relationship between these factors in samples of students and individuals seeking outpatient treatment. Supplemental data collected via the internet (MTurk) also looked at experiential avoidance (EA) with the Avoidance and Fusion Questionnaire for Youth. The Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM-IV, Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, Scale for Suicide Ideation, and Personality Assessment Inventory- Borderline Features Scale elicited information regarding severity and/or frequency of substance use, suicidal thoughts, and borderline features respectively. Additionally, the Psychiatric Diagnostic Screening Questionnaire was administered to the UNT sample. The UNT sample analyses indicate substance use moderates, strengthening, the relationship between borderline features and current suicidal thoughts. However, severity of suicidal thoughts was lower for individuals high in both borderline features and substance use disorder symptoms compared to those low in borderline features and high in substance use symptoms. The MTurk sample analyses suggest substance use functions as a mediator. A robust relationship existed between substance use severity and EA, showing substance use as a behavioral marker for EA. In conclusion, concurrent treatment of substance use and borderline personality features would be beneficial in reducing risk for suicidal thoughts. Further investigation into the role and utility of addressing EA is warranted.

Richardson, Davlin. "A preliminary cognitive framework towards effective ideation for disruptive innovation." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/59759.

Full text
Abstract:
In a world of increased disruptive innovation, volatile macroeconomic variables and unpredictable change, businesses are at risk of being disrupted as disruptors grow enormous user bases seemingly overnight and are then agile enough to continue innovating to stay ahead of the game. Incumbent businesses default to survival mode as they struggle to keep market share because the bureaucracy that burdens these large corporates inhibits their ability to react quickly. That being said, it has never been easier to revolutionise business models and innovate than it is presently, given the velocity of change in technology which underpins most of what disruptive innovation is about. Numerous models and frameworks have been proposed to assist one's cognitive process for ideation but none exist for disruptive thinking, hence a disruptive innovation ideation framework is called for. Using a qualitative research approach, the study was conducted in four phases as we inductively derived a preliminary cognitive framework for disruptive innovation. Phase 0 of this study included an extensive literature review to ensure the important theories relevant to entrepreneurship and innovation were taken into consideration. Three significant findings were uncovered using the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) method to examine the interviews gathered in Phase one, two and three of this research. Two population groups formed part of this study, (1) 26 of Africa's most accomplished Disruptive Innovators and (2) 12 Senior Managers from the retail and wholesale sector. Group 1 was used to seek answers to research questions one and two using semi-structured interviews whilst Group 2 was used to answer research question three using the same interview method. The study led to the creation of the preliminary cognitive framework "Enriched Disruptive Ideation" (EDI) framework and revealed three major findings: (1) Challenging both the common perception and the conception of business (2) the importance of building a good team (3) the emergence of the seven main themes, all of which were incorporated in the framework. This research as a result provided some contributions to bridging the gap in linking entrepreneurship and innovation theory.

Abstract:
This study investigated the role of culture on suicidal thoughts and behaviors by examining (i) differences in explicit reporting of suicidal thoughts and behaviors, (ii) differences in implicit association of suicidal thoughts (iii) correlation of implicit-explicit reporting of suicidal thoughts and behaviors (iv) correlation between religion, religiosity level and reporting of suicidal thoughts between community samples from India and the USA. The study also tested the feasibility of using a measure of cognitive processing (i.e. the Implicit Association Task) as opposed to a self-report measure to identify implicit or hidden associations with suicidal thoughts or behaviors. Given the scarcity of available research on cross-cultural suicidal thoughts and behaviors, this study aims to bridge the current gap and provide evidence on the cultural variability in expression and development of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. The study hypothesized a lower level of explicit reporting of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in the Indian sample (as compared to the USA sample), but equivalent or higher level of implicit association with death/suicide related stimuli. Further, a significant difference in the correlation between religiosity level and suicidal behaviors, moderated by religion, was expected between the two countries. Participants were recruited online using Mechanical Turk to target individuals from India and the USA. A self-report questionnaire format was used to capture information about the participants’ explicit reporting of suicidal thoughts and behaviors, associated risk factors, religious affiliations and country of birth. Implicit cognition towards suicide was measured using an online version of the Death/Suicide IAT. The results showed a significantly lower level of explicit reporting in India as compared to the USA sample but comparable implicit reporting levels. Further, the results also reported a significantly different correlation of religiosity and suicidal thoughts between the two country samples. This study provides initial evidence suggesting a significant role of cultural setting in the reporting and expression of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. This study is also the first to test the feasibility of using the Death/Suicide IAT for measuring implicit suicide related cognition in India.
