Abstract:
Green Ideas is a work of approximately sixty minutes duration scored for two violins, viola, cello, double bass, electric guitar, piano, and drum kit. It presents musical portraits of some of the vocalizations made by infants in their first two years. Phonetic, prosaic, inflective, tonal, semantic, and interactional elements of early communication are abstracted and used for musical inspiration. The work employs varied degrees of composition and improvisation in its six sections, with each section focusing on a single component of early language emergence.

Ennis, William Thomas. "Hereditarian ideas and eugenic ideals at the National Deaf-Mute College." Diss., University of Iowa, 2015. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/1966.

Full text
Abstract:
For the past two centuries deaf people in the United States have faced more or less intense skepticism about their marriages to each other, largely due to fears of inherited deafness. Theses fears, while always present, have waxed and waned over time, becoming most prominent during the eugenics era of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. At Gallaudet University, they were repeatedly expressed by the faculty and administration in a variety of forms and contexts, and echoed by many its students. This dissertation demonstrates the significant influence of these ideas at Gallaudet University on the wider deaf community over the last century; it traces how skepticism toward deaf marriage was framed in terms of hereditarian and, for a time, eugenic ideals; and it explored other more subtle but similarly effective attempts to influence marriage decisions by deaf people. The idea that deaf people should not marry one another was embraced by faculty in Gallaudet’s early decades, diffused from administration to faculty, from faculty to students (deaf undergraduates as well as hearing students studying deaf education), and ultimately carried to other deaf educational institutions via the alumni. While student responses to these ideas were fluid, their adoption by early administration and faculty had a profound and lasting impact. One result was that, during much of the early twentieth century, deaf people were less likely to marry, and when married less likely to have children.

Abstract:
It has been claimed that there was a clear correlation between the fall of the Soviet Unionin 1991 and the exponential growth and democratization of information technology in thelater decades of the 20th century. The last head of state of the Soviet Union, MikhailGorbachev, admitted in 2005 that emerging decentralized electronic communication was“a big factor” for fostering democracy in the Soviet Union.1For my generation, born in the late 1980’s, computers and the Internet are used on a dayto-day basis and provide possibilities that, for the most part, lead to less dramaticconsequences. On the other hand, I believe that these information technologiesnevertheless force us to constantly reevaluate norms about the relationships betweenconsumer and business companies and private and public life.My practice is founded in an examination of questions about media, popular culture, consumers and real events; more specifically how communication and trading systemsbetween these “territories” are organized and what effects it has on culture. I will in thischapter give a description of recent developments in information technologies. Althoughbrief and simplified, it serves to illustrate how they help to determine the ways in whichwe consume culture. It may be impossible to summarize “post-Cold War culture” but one definingcharacteristic is the decreasing distance between the professional and the amateur.Today’s hackers and bedroom programmers may turn into tomorrow’s billionaireentrepreneurs, as a result of the information age. In this fairly new situation, culturalconsumption, production and exchange of media often occurs in front of screens. As the view of the consumer and the audience as passive entities becomes more nuanced,so too does old notions about visual communication and interaction. A 21st centurycitizen is equipped with different - some say significantly better - tools for reading, decoding and reacting to media than a person living in the early 1900’s.2The dreams of a totally transparent Internet/society, born in the minds of cyber pioneersin the 1980’s, have not yet crystallized. Neither have we seen a true, global “creativeclass” come to fruition.2 Despite this, one could sense that today’s consumers are to alarge extent a cross between consumers and producers, givers and takers. Americanmedia scholar and professor at University of Southern California, Henry Jenkins, writesabout this cultural and technological shift:Rather than talking about media producers and consumers as occupying separateroles, we might now see them as participants who interact with each otheraccording to a new set of rules that none of us fully understands. Not allparticipants are created equal. Corporations – and even individuals withincorporate media – still exert greater power than any individual consumer or eventhe aggregate of consumers. And some consumers have greater abilities toparticipate in this emerging culture than others.3If there is any truth to this description, one must ask what the implications are for asociety that is partially governed by a new set of puzzling rules. It is not always simple tomap out a definitive answer of who will succeed in being heard and seen. As Jenkinswrites, a power struggle still exists. Questions that are linked to these matters are part ofthe framework of my artistic practice.

Abstract:
Today, there is an uncertainty regarding idea development, and a lack of knowledge in the existing literature regarding early idea maturation in development projects has been found. While previous research within the area of innovation mainly investigating ideas within the Fuzzy Front End, this master thesis focus on the management of ideas in the early phases of development projects. This master thesis strives to map the current way of working with ideas and methods used to develop ideas in the beginning of product and knowledge development projects at Sandvik Coromant. The aim is to shed light upon the gap regarding early idea development, with the long-term objective to improve the management of ideas in the beginning of projects to foster innovation. Five larger projects, that have used facilitated idea generation workshops, were selected to be part of the study. Interviews and a validation workshop were conducted in order to examine the development of ideas early in the projects. The differences between rejected ideas and further developed ideas, the belief in, and the fate of rejected ideas in development projects were investigated. The findings showed that the maturation of rejected and further developed ideas occurs at different times of the projects, as well as in different core elements. Further, the result indicates that ideas aiming to solve sub-problem in development projects do not mature to the same extent in all core elements comparing to earlier research on maturation of product ideas. There were no differences found between rejected and further developed ideas regarding documentation and the spreading of ideas. Neither did the belief in an idea in the beginning of the projects differ between the rejected and the further developed ideas.

Abstract:
The work argues that Descartes established his metaphysics of bodies by means of a two-step argument: the former (ultimately grounded on the theory of ideas) being intended to prove that bodies are extended substances; the latter (which takes advantage of Descartes’ entire natural philosophy) aimed at proving that bodies are nothing but extended substances. It shows that for Descartes there are no arguments from ‘first philosophy’ that could prove that bodies are nothing but extended substances. The work shows that Descartes’ argument to eliminate all “real qualities” and “substantial forms” of the Scholastics is ultimately an argument to the best explanation driven by ontological parsimony. In other words, a razor. More in particular, it was the theory of vision to provide the paradigm case for Descartes’ ontology of material substances. The work concluded that, contrary to what claimed by virtually all Cartesian scholars, the thesis that bodies are nothing but extended things is not therefore the starting point of Descartes’ physics, but its crowning achievement.

Abstract:
This qualitative thesis analyses the development of Marxian thought on riots and revolution in the works of Slavoj Žižek and Alain Badiou. Due to the structural limitations of this essay, the research has been limited to a comparison between Karl Marx’s The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte and a selection of Žižek and Badiou’s works. Furthermore, the scope of the essay focuses on two material events; the coup d’état of Louis Bonaparte and the England riots of 2011. The comparison was concretised through the usage of Ludvig Beckman’s model for idea analysis and the method of ideal types. This study demonstrated how the modern theorists remain loyal to Marx’s basic analysis of society and concepts such as alienation and exploitation. However, the deterministic and eschatological aspects of Marx’s philosophy have been abandoned for a less ineluctable history, and resonate more towards the Hegelian notion of an open history. This study has also elucidated and cemented the vital importance of the material circumstances in a historical materialist study; moreover, it has revealed the necessity for the modern theorists to reinvent and radicalise a number of Marx’s original concepts for the modern world. Žižek and Badiou also contest Marx’s insistence on the requisite nature of violent revolution, and promote the politics of subtraction as an alternative.

Abstract:
Open innovation seeks to make organizations more competitive by managing the inflows and outflows of their organization. These organizations use crowdsourced discussions as a mechanism to encourage innovative ideas. However, the results of most of these crowdsourced discussions are not as innovative as expected. Some scholars seek to address this problem by mainly focusing on identifying appropriate incentives to encourage ideas, but they have not paid attention to how the structural characteristics of the crowdsourced discussion generate innovative ideas. This thesis draws from theories on management and creativity to develop a new framework about the effect of knowledge diversity on innovation in crowdsourced discussions. The proposed framework is validated using data obtained from multiple crowdsourced discussions. Moreover, a new methodology is presented for assessing the innovativeness of the ideas generated during crowdsourced discussions that is suited to the fuzzy nature of novel ideas. In sum, the three research questions addressed in this thesis are: 1) how does the diversity of the crowdsourced discussion affect innovativeness? 2) how do the characteristics of the crowdsourced discussion affect innovativeness? 3) how can the innovativeness of ideas be rated in crowdsourced discussion to take into consideration the different degrees of expertise from the decision-makers? The results indicate that less prior individual diversity, more current individual diversity, collaboration among participants, and first time posters foster innovation in crowdsourced discussion.

Abstract:
The history of architecture in Western countries and Lithuania is researched from various points of view. Such significant elements of architecture as light, color, sound, and water so far have been studied as far as their relation to the architecture of certain specific historical periods is concerned. However, up till now research of this kind was limited to deep, yet narrow, fragmented and specialized views of certain historical periods, or research projects were concerned with certain specific aspects of connections between works of architecture and metaphysical beliefs. Because of this, research of architectural history still lacks a thorough account of how metaphysical, religious, and philosophical worldviews affected the artistic expression of architecture of different periods. Without a sufficient amount of research of this kind, it is impossible to reconstruct a thoroughly consistent and more or less total view of the historical development of architecture. On the other hand, it strikes one as obvious that while the history and theory of architecture is being studied in Lithuania, we witness a lack of research work on the concepts of light, color, sound, and water that dominated during certain historic periods. Their impact upon the development of architecture needs to be analyzed and evaluated synthetically in a way that is consistent with a generalized approach, and with the help of research methods applied in the history of ideas and principles of analysis... Abstract:
Thesis (S.B.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 2011.
Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 28-30).
The aim of this paper is to perform a review of Biomimicry as a science today in environmental, engineering, and manufacturing fields, as well as to educate readers on the history of Biomimicry as a whole and how it is studied. As more evidence surfaces about the effect of our presence on the Earth, the scientific community is faced with the challenge of solving these problems. After introducing these concepts, an in-depth review of two of the most studied topics in biomimicry is conducted: how the lotus remains clean in a dirty swamp and how the gecko can stick to any surface. These two topics are taken from the classical beliefs on how they work and leads them through into today's world, focusing on how the mechanisms behind them were discovered. Both sections end with a review of current applications of the technologies that have been developed by studying these living organisms. Everything is wrapped up with a discussion of why we must continue to study biomimicry and apply its principles to our engineering and production practices.

Buchalter, E. "Ideas in science : an ethnographic study." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2014. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1436721/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates ideas in science. Ideas are explored as an analytical category and examined as an indigenous concept to scientists. This study identifies ideas in science as thoughts or plans, and seeks to understand the main characteristics of ideas as well as explore what factors affect the extent to which they can develop in a laboratory environment. This ethnographic study is based on fifteen months of participant observation in biomedicine laboratories at one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the world. The resulting data is evaluated using Actor-Network Theory (ANT) in order to demonstrate how ideas are dynamic and best thought of as networks that are acted upon by scientists’ beliefs (Chapter 5), experimentation (Chapter 6), discussions (Chapter 7) and the institutional settings within which science takes place (Chapter 8). This thesis argues that understanding what ideas in science are, and what factors shape and influence them, is a vital part of recognising and appreciating what it means for scientists to ‘do’ science. This study demonstrates the dynamism of ideas in science by explaining how: scientists’ use of the word ‘belief’ acts on how ideas develop; experimentation justifies idea developments and scientists’ discussions facilitate the sharing and connection of ideas. Chapter 8 places the dynamic ways that ideas develop (explained in Chapters 5, 6 and 7) within what is shown to be a stifling institutional context that values ideas as static objects (for example, as delivered and communicated in publications or funding proposals). This friction, it is argued, forces ideas to become institutionally ‘frozen’ and incentivises incremental shifts in thinking.

Abstract:

Bauer, Kaarina-Nancy. "Heinrich Wolfflin's ideas and historiographical discourse." Thesis, Open University, 2009. http://oro.open.ac.uk/54490/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis on Heinrich Wolfflin (1864-1945) is a problematisation and, essentially, a revision of the interpretation of his personal discourse: the theories, themes and implications of three of his texts. This re-evaluation is a historiographical analysis in connection with the unpublished material in the Wolfflin archives, which establishes Wolfflin's concern for the subject in terms of an anthropological Kulturgeschichte. The subjectdriven terminology of the texts indicates an aesthetics of perception and reception. Wolfflin's thinking is analysed with regards to his methodological practices (formal analysis and comparison of two images) and academic scholarship (focusing mostly on Renaissance and Baroque studies). His texts are an exemplification and evidence for the theoretical conception of the historical categories (in a philosophical and epistemological sense) of bodiliness (Karperlichkeit, Karperhaftigkeit) and visuality (Sichtbarkeit, Anschauung) within the cultural transition between the fields of historicism and modernity/modernism. Through the impact of photographic reproductions he demarcated an analytical typology of architectural form and spatial effects, and of modes of depiction (of artists, sculptors or arqhitects) and categories of beholding (of the viewer), with emphasis on the underlying and ontological connection between each of the two domains, that is, bodiliness in the Prolegomena and Renaissance and Baroque, and visuality in the Principles of Art History. The fundamental and problematic interweaving of issues of theory and history characterises Wolfflin's theories throughout his life and in this his discourse is symptomatic for the emergent discipline of art history. The construction of the Wolfflinian field is set up in relation to the conditions of the intellectual context of the discipline, as extrapolation of aesthetics, philosophy, psychology, epistemology, systemisation, Wissenschaftlichkeit and history-writing. The identification and unfolding of multiple intentions, ambiguities and problems are crucial aspects of this interpretation of Wolfflin's theory of art history in theoretical and practical terms.

Frampton, Ian. "Are overvalued ideas about weight and shape overvalued ideas in the diagnosis of early onset anorexia nervosa?" Thesis, University of Exeter, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10036/35552.

Full text
Abstract:
Objective: The Eating Disorder Examination (EDE) is a reliable and valid semi-structured interview, which measures the specific psychopathology of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. This study aims to investigate the psychometric properties of the child adaptation of version 12.0D of the EDE (ChEDE 12.0). Method: The ChEDE 12.0 was administered to 15 children with anorexia nervosa (AN), 15 children with other clinical eating disturbances and two groups of 15 age-matched controls. The groups were compared using a two sample matched groups design. Results: Alpha coefficients for each of the ChEDE 12.0 subscales indicated a high degree of internal consistency, and inter-rater reliability was found to be high (r=0.91 to r=1.00). The subscale scores of the AN group were significantly higher than those of the other groups, whilst the other eating disturbance group did not differ from its control group. Discussion: The ChEDE 12.0 differentiates children with AN from children with other forms of clinical eating disturbance and control children. The hypothesis that children with early onset anorexia nervosa would not evidence significant weight and shape concern is refuted

Abstract:
Climate change adaptation has emerged as an important topic of both scientific and political interest. Adaptation science now claims a legitimate space in policy agendas based on its prospective insights in providing guidance to adaptation policy and practice. The growth in adaptation science has contributed to the development of principles and assumptions about the nature of climate adaptation, which now influence our research, policy and practice. These emergent guidelines consist of a collection of core assumptions, which have enabled the translation of the more normative and speculative aspects of adaptation into policy relevant knowledge, frequently referred to as ‘adaptation theory’. However, this more applied side of adaptation science still faces substantial difficulties in its ability to move meaningfully between theory and practice. Hence, increasing calls for closer integration of adaptation theory and practice continue to be made in order to validate how ‘adaptation theory’ can support policy and practice. Although academia has responded to these calls by focusing more research on the fundamental characteristics of ‘good’ and ‘successful’ adaptation, it is still unclear what constitutes ’adaptation theory’ and the extent it is relevant for policy- and decision-making processes.

Abstract:
Abstract When the Swedish Centre Party, Centerpartiet, just before Christmas 2012 released a draft for new program of ideas a powerful "winter storm" broke out. Ideas that Centerpartiet would abolish compulsory schooling and the right to inheritance and allow polygamy are just a few of the things that cause alarm. It's not the first time during the last years the Centre Party is associated with neo-liberal elements in their party’s ideology. In 2007 Erik Ullenhag criticized Centerpartiet for their new neo-liberalism was a danger to the alliance. The aim of this study is to investigate whether it is possible to see a change in Centerpartiets ideology and how deep it is. From an idea analytical approach based on ideal types, created for social liberalism, neoliberalism and ecohumanism, the party programs from 2001 and 2013 are studied. The eight components studied are: the view on human nature, most important unit in society, the vision of freedom, methods of social change, political governance, society's economic organization, the vision of prosperity and utopia - the good society. In examining the causes of the potential changes a secondary analysis, where existing material was used, has been implemented. The result shows that there has been a change in ideology in Centerpartiet between 2001 and 2013. The probable causes for this are the bad result in the general election 2010 and the election of a new leadership for the party in 2013. Abstract:
The aim of this dissertation is to problematize the role played by the ideas of reason in the process of unfolding of knowledge, namely, to show in which manner the ideas of reason contribute into turning possible to conceive nature (or the world) as a knowable systematic totality and also turning possible the sort of systematic experience that gives meaning to the conceptualizer act of the understanding and to the scientific activity as a whole either, something that, as we argue for, inevitably depends on the chance to think the world as something organized. In the Critique of Pure Reason Kant asserts that knowledge starts with intuitions, goes through concepts and ends up with ideas, and also that every science has an idea on its basis, given this, what we do in the first part of the text is exactly to clarify the nature of ideas in themselves, in such a way that there is no doubt about what they are; we also seek to face some objections made by commentators about the necessity of the employment of the ideas to the constitution of safe knowledge. In the second part we analyze the first part of the Appendix, finding there the issue investigated here and showing how Kant sets the proper uses of the ideas of reason in a way that the old errors of metaphysics are not restored. At last, in the third part, we aim to show the particular character that the idea of an architect and creator God plays to ensure the necessary order to the settlement of knowledge, i.e., the attribution to an idea of reason the condition of founder of the possibility to conceive nature in an ordered way and, thereafter, knowable.

Abstract:
Considering the relevance of Evanildo Becharas Moderna gramática portuguesa (Modern Portuguese grammar), for both pedagogical and academic scenarios in Brazil, this study aimed to investigate how theories presented in the two phases of this work affect the processing of linguistic facts. The corpus assessed was composed of the 36th and 37th editions of Moderna gramática portuguesa, that were published in 1997 and 1999, respectively, as we consider them the editions that establish the transition from the first to the second phase of the work. Based on theoretical and methodological perspective by Sylvain Auroux (2008; 2009), mainly in regards to the guiding principles of this language sciences historian\'s work (a purely phenomenological definition of the object, epistemological neutrality and moderate historicism) and concerning to some concepts he established (such as grammaticalization, linguistic tool, retrospection horizon, and historical objects domain), our work methodology has been conducted to establish Evanildo Becharas retrospection horizon and to compare the two grammar texts mentioned above aimed to verify: (i) how graeco-latin theory and structuralism complement each other in the 1st release of MGP; (ii) how structuralism is still reflected in the work after its reconfiguration (since the 37th edition); and (iii) how the functionalist theory affects language processing in the 2nd release of the work. Thus, in order to investigate comprehensively the theoretical complementarity presented in Evanildo Becharas work and to understand how and why this phenomenon has happened, this research pertains specifically to the field of History of linguistic ideas.

Abstract:
The purpose of the present work is to evaluate the current crisis of economic ideas from a historical standpoint. To that end, we will offer a brief survey of a few major crises of economic ideas occurred in the past, as well as an analysis of the different factors responsible for the present crisis. We will focus on the theoretical dimension of the crises and their solutions. Aiming to compare the different crises under analysis, we will try to identify mechanisms shared by all of them, and thereby to assess the current state of evolution of the present crisis. Moreover, on a larger scale, we will try to determine the role played by the crises of economic ideas within the evolution of theoretical knowledge.

Abstract:
Students in a summer work experience in university science and engineering laboratories were interviewed before, and near the end, of their three week placement to find their ideas about scientists and their work. The study indicates that the friendliness of the people was a significant feature of the scientist's setting for all the students. Although all but one of the seven boys mentioned elements of the task or working with equipment first when discussing significant features of the experience, they all commented on the friendliness of the people. However, for all five girls and one of the boys, the friendliness of the people was the most significant feature of the experience and little was said about the task or working with equipment. Before the placement the students were unsure of the friendliness of the scientists, and anticipated that scientists had serious and grave dispositions. Many thought the atmosphere of the laboratory would be formal, while others held a variety of ideas about the laboratory's formality. Scientists' work was thought to be demanding, requiring dedicated, hardworking, single-minded, serious persons who worked abnormal hours. Following the placement, the students were relieved to find that 'scientists were friendly'. In addition they found that the people in a scientist's setting were informal, that they were 'not serious' and were often 'joking around'. The students' initial idea that a scientist's work is demanding was confirmed. Following the placement the students thought that scientists needed to be dedicated and serious about their work, but like other professionals, scientists sometimes needed to work 'abnormal hours'. While scientists did concentrate on the job, they were not 'thinking day and night only about their work'. However, the students thought that becoming a scientist took more effort than other similar careers. There was no significant change in career choices as result of the experience. Based on the results of this study it is recommended that in order to improve students' views of science, teachers and others should emphasize that scientists are friendly, informal, intelligent, normal people, and that there are a range of work roles in science requiring various levels of education, effort and commitment.
