Abstract:
AbstractDuring the early twentieth century, British novelist and philosopher May Sinclair published two book-length defenses of idealism. Although Sinclair is well known to literary scholars, she is little known to the history of philosophy. This paper provides the first substantial scholarship on Sinclair's philosophical views, focusing on her mature idealism. Although Sinclair is working within the larger British idealist tradition, her argument for Absolute idealism is unique, founded on Samuel Alexander's new realist beliefs about the reality of time. Her metaphysics takes idealism and pantheism in new directions and provides fresh insight into 1920s debates between British idealisms and realisms.

Abstract:
From the mid-nineteenth century to the early twentieth century British Idealism was a leading school of philosophical thought and the Scottish Idealists made important contributions to this philosophical school. In Scotland, there were two types of post-Hegelian idealism: Absolute Idealism and Personal Idealism. This article will show the ways in which these philosophical systems arose by focusing on their leading representatives: Edward Caird and Andrew Seth Pringle-Pattison.

Abstract:
International Relations (IR) textbooks often make reference to an idealist paradigm in interwar IR. This article argues that an idealist paradigm did not exist, and that interwar references to idealism or utopianism are contradictory and have little to do with defining a paradigm. Not only is there no idealist paradigm in IR at this time, but authors from the interwar period that have since been dismissed as idealists rarely share the attributes assigned to idealism or utopianism by later writers. If IR scholars are serious about understanding the history of their discipline then they will have to stop applying misleading and anachronistic terms like idealism.

Abstract:
J. A. Hobson died on April Fools’ Day in the first year of the Second World War. This, and a whimsical anecdote from A. J. P. Taylor, might appear to be enough to justify the portrayal of Hobson as an idealist. This paper critically assesses the work of J. A. Hobson and its relation to idealism as a category of international relations thought. An examination of Hobson’s writings on international relations shows that there are three distinct strands of thought, three modes of idealism. These modes of idealist thought differ on fundamental propositions about international relations as well as in their prescriptions for a reformed world order. In short, consideration of Hobson’s work destabilizes the monolithic category of idealism in international relations. Put another way, idealism blurs important distinctions in Hobson’s work.

Abstract:
The following contribution aims at presenting a reading of Wittgenstein’s later philosophy as a kind of idealism within the Kantian and post-Kantian tradition. The goal is to argue that Wittgenstein’s position shares substantial theoretical and methodological grounds with Hegel’sidealism. The main concepts pertaining to the later Wittgenstein’s position are analyzed and understood as a form of idealism. After defending the reading against anti-idealist interpretations we argue that the kind of idealism presented clashes with central tenets of the Kantian position. These points of departure are then shown to cover in substantial manner the same kind of criticism Hegel raised against Kant. In the last section, an interpretation of central concepts of the Hegelian position is offered in order to dissolve any fundamental incompatibility with Wittgenstein’s idealism.

Abstract:
Incongruent counterparts are pairs of objects which cannot be enclosed in the same spatial limits despite an exact similarity in magnitude, proportion, and relative position of their parts. Kant discerns in such objects, whose most familiar example is left and right hands, a “paradox” demanding “demotion of space and time to mere forms of our sensory intuition.” This paper aims at an adequate understanding of Kant’s enigmatic idealist argument from handed objects, as well as an understanding of its relation to the other key supports of his idealism. The paper’s central finding is that Kant’s idealist argument from incongruent counterparts rests essentially on his theory of freedom. The surprising result sheds new light on deep and overlooked links among the pillars of transcendental idealism, pointing the way to a comprehensive and unified reading of Kant’s system of idealist arguments.

abstract: In 1880s Britain, Constance Naden defended “hylo-idealism,” a theory aiming to unify materialism with idealism. This paper offers the first sustained study of Naden’s metaphysical system. On this new reading of Naden’s hylo-idealism, her materialism is carefully qualified; and her idealism is distinctively Kantian, her construal of the external cosmos as Unknown placing her within the Victorian school of metaphysical agnostics. I distinguish Naden’s system from that of fellow hylo-idealist Robert Lewins and argue it lies closer to that of evolutionist Thomas Henry Huxley. Against various critics, I show that Naden has the resources to rebuff objections facing hylo-idealism. This paper seeks to open further avenues for Naden scholarship and help us better understand Victorian metaphysics more generally.

In the Introduction to Being and Nothingness, Sartre provides what he calls an “ontological proof” that purports to undermine Heidegger’s idealist view that the existence of objects is constitutively dependent on our characteristically human mode of existence. In this paper, I introduce an interpretation of Heidegger’s idealism, develop Sartre’s criticism of Heidegger, and explore a promising way Heidegger might respond. It will emerge that Heidegger’s idealism, if understood correctly as embracing a modal commitment central to Kantian idealism, survives Sartre’s ontological proof.

Abstract:
Abstract: Philosophy of idealism in the praxis of Christian religious education focuses on developing spiritual awareness, building a relationship with God and strengthening basic religious values. Idealism also emphasizes the importance of recognizing the truth and understanding the essence of human existence. This can help in forming a positive mindset, making good decisions, and acting with integrity and responsibility. However, in practice not many understand the concept of philosophy of idealism, so that the practice of Christian religious education often ignores philosophical concepts that contribute to the process of improving Christian religious education itself. The method used in this research is literature study. The results of the study show that there are implications of the philosophy of idealism in the praxis of Christian religious education, namely the importance of understanding religious concepts, focusing on developing individual potential, prioritizing the learning process and prioritizing personal experience. Thus, the philosophy of idealism can be applied in the practice of Christian religious education by paying attention to spiritual values, character education, holistic education, and inclusive education.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a study of the role of the idea of “God” in the systematic metaphysics of rationality found in Kant’s and Hegel’s work. It surveys some basic structural components of their views of theoretical and practical reason and argues for the centrality of certain theological commitments to their broader metaphysical positions. The connection between these theological commitments and a broader metaphysical program is instituted in theories of conceptual determination constitutive of both transcendental idealism and absolute idealism. The connection is found in Kant’s view of the limits of human knowledge and action; these are seen as problematic given the way such limits are supposedly at once both a priori restrictions and yet also incomprehensible. The obscurity of this view has made it a well-known target of attack from Hegelian quarters, and the thesis proceeds by defending certain components of this Kantian view, while making concessions to the Hegelian view that Kant’s retention of such a problematic perspective on unconditioned knowledge and moral perfection was a mistake. The first part of the work takes account of some general prejudices found in discourse about both philosophical theology and philosophical anthropology, and makes some remarks about the kind of metaphysical dogmatisms which should be discarded in these arenas. Part two involves an examination of certain metarepresentational structures in Kant’s philosophy and seeks to undermine some of them by appeals to Hegelian theses about rational, conceptual determination. This discussion is connected with Hegel’s reflections on religion. In the third part Kant’s principle of complete determination is examined; its connection with his theology and theory of judgment is discussed, and a Hegelian response to it is recommended. The overall conclusion is that Hegel’s theological views are connected with a more plausible thesis of the nature of normative constraint.

Abstract:
What does it mean to be free? How have Canadians tried to answer this question? Where does Canada's political culture stand today? These are the themes of this dissertation, and at its heart we will find the abundance of G.W.F. Hegel's political philosophy. The road to answering these questions begins with recognizing that there is a distinctive tradition of Canadian political philosophy which offers an original formulation of the question of freedom, community, and history. The tradition is Canadian Idealism, and its members share central elements of a common vision that is strongly informed by Hegel's thought. This dissertation identifies this tradition and its central tenets, traces the influences and makes a general critical assessment of its political prescriptions. The case is made through an analysis of the importance of Hegel's philosophy to the works of three leading Canadian thinkers: C.B. Macpherson (1911-1987), George Parkin Grant (1918-1988), and Charles Taylor (1931-). These three political philosophers are excellent representatives of the continuance of the Hegelian tradition since the 1950s. They have had an enormous influence on Canadian scholarship and they each embody very different strains of the theoretical approach, thus giving us a good sample of the various forms that a Canadian idealist can adopt. Hegel's philosophy has served as the foundation for their arguments regarding multiculturalism, nationalism, human agency, and the crisis in values of the modern age. While many people have argued for and against the culturalist and nationalist politics of Grant and Taylor or the form of socialism articulated by Macpherson, the significance of their Hegelianism has been underemphasized, and in the cases of Grant and Macpherson it has been almost universally unrecognized. I see them not as isolated political philosophers who share an interest in Hegel, but rather as members of a scarcely acknowledged Canadian intellectual tradition that has been recorded by a few intellectual historians, but virtually ignored in the literature on Canadian political thought. Not only does this dissertation refine our understanding of these three prominent Canadian thinkers and their conceptions of freedom and community, but it also outlines the main tenets of an intellectual tradition that has played a major role in defining Canada's political culture.

Irvine, B. T. "The naturalisation of transcendental idealism." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2008. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.604951.

Full text
Abstract:
In the early section of the thesis I argue for a position which endorses what is usually considered to be an unacceptable paradox: the paradox of the Naturalisation Idealism (hereafter, ‘the paradox’). The paradox occurs most vividly in the work of Arthur Schopenhauer, a philosopher who claimed notoriously that the brain is responsible for the ideality of the whole world even though the brain is itself an object within the world. I argue that there are four key philosophical intuitions whose indubitability leads to the paradox, but I suggest that the paradox may be considered in a more positive light by construing the intuitions in terms of a key analogy. I call the resulting position ‘contraspectivism’. Contraspectivism enables us to countenance what I call a ‘four-fit’ between the key philosophical intuitions, with a ‘fulcral’ role for the brain in connecting them. I claim that this position comprises a ‘Copernican turnaround’: a position which upholds Kant’s Copernicanism but which nonetheless explicates it according to the original reality of the world within which the brain is environed. I allege that three philosophers, in particular, are committed – explicitly or implicitly – to the tenets of contraspectivism, namely, Schopenhauer, Richard Rorty and Donald Davidson. I also suggest that the paradox is embedded within the ‘justified true belief’ construal of knowledge. In the penultimate section I assess Schopenhauer’s claim that there is an ‘originary’ thing-in-itself – knowable as the ‘will’ – within which the terms of the paradox can be reconciled. I reject the notion that any entity could possibly possess the kind of ‘maybeing’ necessary to fulfil this conciliatory role, and I criticise David Cooper’s doctrine of ‘mystery’ in the light of this discussion. I conclude that contraspectivism offers a solution to what Cooper calls the problem of ‘alienation’ in philosophy; but it is a solution which asserts that the terms of the supposed problem are actually perfectly acceptable as they stand.

Abstract:
G.E. Moore’s argument in Proof of an External World” seems to beg the question against the skeptic and to miss the point of the challenge posed by skeptical hypotheses. I propose an interpretation that frees the argument from both charges. Starting from a distinction between the way Moore understood his dialectical position against the idealist and the skeptic, I attempt to illuminate the conception of skepticism that lies behind his argument. I propose that the argument’s core is found in a strong anti-Cartesian statement, even though its relevance for epistemology is to be found in its potential as a stance regarding justification which is closer to the problematic of Pyrrhonic skepticism.

Abstract:
Contemporary Swedish security policy indicates a shift from an international orientation into an increased nationally emphasized policy. This thesis questions if the governmental view on security and external context has changed from a liberal to a more realist notion and how that may be reflected in the security policy transformation 2004-2015. The liberal and realist schools of thought constitutes the basis of the analytic framework. Realists argue that international relations are tinged by anarchy, uncertainty and power struggle between states while liberalists share an optimistic view on humanity and contend that international relations can overcome anarchy. The conclusion of the thesis argues that a realist view of the surrounding world has increased in response to the Russian violations against Georgia and Ukraine. This is also reflected in the security policy transformation process. However, the government´s views seem to have retained liberal values on security along with the essence of external relations as a means to take unified action against a broad scale of security threats.

Abstract:
Abstract: This paper seeks to demonstrate that Le Corbusier's autodidactic agenda between 1908 and 1911 reflects a consistent philosophical reasoning based on the philosophical tradition of German idealism. The vehicle of analysis is the connection between Édouard Schuré's 'Sanctuaires d'Orient', a book Le Corbusier read in 1908, and three key episodes of the subsequent period of travel. Schuré's book provides us with the philosophical framework to which he was exposed. The three episodes, in turn, are taken as case studies in order to demonstrate the correlation between the philosophical background of the book and Le Corbusier's changing attitudes during this period. The terms of this correlation are based on an evolutionary conception of history and can be synthesized as the belief in cultural progress, leading to a new society built upon the unity of science, religion and art, in a secular-sacred life attained through the recovery of a pantheistic existence, and in art and architecture as a means to an epistemological experience. I will lastly argue that this creates the basis for the lifelong influence of idealism in Le Corbusier's work and thought. Keywords: Le Corbusier's Education; Schuré; German Idealism; Romanticism. Abstract:
Food is a key part of survival and permeates various aspects such as ideological, psychological and representation. In this work, we will address a growing eating habit: veganism. The objective of this article is to study the transition process that individuals who choose this eating habit go through, in particular their motivations and difficulties. To this end, netnography was chosen as methodological procedures, and for this purpose non-participant observation was adopted – carried out on the social media Facebook –, and semi-structured interviews with vegans, where their experiences were addressed. From the elaboration of three stages: i) the beginning; ii) transition; iii) stability, it was possible to obtain results divided into categories that permeate veganism. Finally, it was concluded that veganism, in addition to being a habit, is a lifestyle.

Ivanyshyn, Petro. BASIC CONCEPTS OF YEVHEN MALANIUK’S NATIONAL-PHILOSOPHICAL INTERPRETATION: ESEISTIC DISCOURSE. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, February 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2021.49.11070.

Abstract:
The purpose of the research is to outline the structure of the main methodological ideas within the frames of interpretive thinking in the essay of the famous Vistnyk’s writer, critic and essayist Yevhen Malaniuk. Considering the purpose and tasks of the studio, an interdisciplinary methodological base, related to the author’s “national approach”, has been worked out. The epistemological potential of national philosophy as a philosophy of national existence, national science as a theory of nation, hermeneutics as a theory and practice of interpretation and post-colonialism as interpretation of cultural phenomena from the standpoint of anti- and post-imperial consciousness are used in the work. The scientific novelty is that on the basis of the previous hermeneutic generalization and definition of national-existential methodology, a propaedeutic outlining of the structure of national-philosophical concepts within the frames of the essayistic interpretation of reality in Ye. Malaniuk is proposed. In the methodological sense, the writer’s essayism is structured by such concepts as nation-centrism, idealism, voluntarism, heroism, and can be considered as one of the variants (close by the experiences of D. Dontsov, Yu. Lypa, M. Mukhyn, etc.) of the Vistnyk’s national-philosophical (national-existential, nationalistic or nation-centric) hermeneutics, that is, the way of understanding, which the author by himself outlined as a “national approach”. The support of Ye. Malaniuk as a culture-philosopher and exegete on the eternal nation-centric values and criteria in his essayistic studies makes his reflections not only historically interesting, but also theoretically productive, classically important for the development of modern Ukrainian hermeneutics and humanities in general.

Stratton, R. A., and A. J. Stirling. Examining the dynamical response to convective heating using an idealised version of the Met Office’s Unified Model. Met Office, May 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.62998/ouao1203.

Full text
Abstract:
In global circulation models, poor coupling between convection parametrizations and the resolved dynamics poses significant obstacles to the representation of a range of convectively coupled atmospheric phenomena. Here we focus on one part of this coupling and ask whether the dynamical response to convection can adequately be captured when convection is parametrized only as heat and moisture sources to the resolved scale, (as is usually the case in convection parametrizations), and without including either mass, or vertical momentum transport terms. To this end, a ‘perfect’ convection parametrization is constructed under idealised conditions, for which the inputs of heat and moisture are derived by coarse-graining higher-resolution reference simulations of convecting plumes. The dynamical response of the ‘perfect’ parametrization is then compared with that of the reference simulation. These experiments are conducted using the Met Office Unified Model running with a horizontal resolution of 30 km in a quiescent atmosphere and show that, provided the heating is applied regularly over short (five minute) time intervals, in a dry model a very similar resulting dynamical response can be obtained, without the need for additional mass transfer or momentum terms. In a wet model, the agreement remains good, with differences of no more than 20% developing. If, however, the heating is applied intermittently, such that only the time-averaged heating is correct (as can be the case when using a CAPE-closed convection scheme), the dynamical response is significantly disrupted, and we conclude that this is likely to be a major contributor to the difficulties in representing convectively-coupled atmospheric phenomena in the Unified Model.
