Abstract:
In Toronto’s 2007 Nuit Blanche festivities, people searched the streets for a non-existent, interactive performance piece called Assbook. One blogger wrote, “[B]ecause it sounded irreverent (and because we thought we might get to see some skin) we scoured Kensington Market for Assbook, but the exhibit was nowhere to be found” (Rockr and Junkii). One of the supposed Assbook artists, I was approached all night by people asking about the artwork. Where is it? Why aren’t you going through with Assbook, Heather? How on earth did something called Assbook end up being such a popular discussion piece at the “art carpet-bombing”1 event known as Nuit Blanche? How did such a juvenile idea find its way into the prestigious, all-night, place-marketing spectacle?

Abstract:

Abstract:
Nuclear mitochondrial pseudogenes, or “numts”, are nonfunctional copies of mitochondrial genes that have been translocated to the nuclear genome. Numts have been used to study differences in mutation rates between the nuclear and mitochondrial genomes, but have also been implicated as troublesome for phylogenetic studies and DNA-based species identification (i.e., DNA barcoding). In this study, a suspected numt discovered during a study of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) diversity in North American birds was targeted and sequenced from tyrant flycatchers (family: Tyrannidae). In total, the numt was found in five taxa representing two genera. Substitution rates were compared between COI and numt sequences. None of the numt sequences harboured stop codons nor frameshift mutations, but phylogenetic analysis revealed they had accumulated more amino acid substitutions than the mitochondrial COI sequences. Mitochondrial COI appeared to be preferentially amplified in most cases, but methods for numt detection are discussed for cases like this where sequences lack obvious features for identification. Because of its persistence across a broad taxonomic lineage, this numt could form a valuable model system for studying evolution in numts. The full size of the numt and its location within the nuclear genome are yet to be determined.

Abstract:
Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie zasadniczych idei libertarianizmu. Do głównych przedstawicieli libertarianizmu należą m.in.: Jay A. Nock, Ayn Rand, Robert Nozick, Murray N. Rothbard i Hans H. Hoppe.

Abstract:
SUMMARYThis study was aimed at comparing in-field parameters and remote sensing NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index) by both satellite (SAT) and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for the assessment of early nitrogen (N) status and prediction of yield in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Six increasing N rates, i.e., 0, 40, 80, 120, 160, 200 kg N ha−1 were applied, half at tillering and half at shooting. Thus, when the crop N status was monitored between the two N applications, consecutive N treatments differentiated from each other by just 20 kg N ha−1. The following in-field and remote sensed parameters were compared as indicators of crop vegetative and N status: plant N% (w:w) concentration; crop N uptake (Nupt); ratio between transmitted and incident photosynthetically active radiation (PARt/PARi); leaf SPAD values, an indirect index for chlorophyll content; SAT and UAV derived NDVI. As reliable indicators of wheat N availability, in-field parameters were ranked as follows: PARt/PARi ≅ Nupt > SPAD ≅ N%. The PARt/PARi, Nupt and SPAD resulted quite strongly correlated to each other. At all crop stages, the NDVI was strongly correlated with PARt/PARi and Nupt. It is of relevance that NDVI correlated quite strongly to in-field parameters and grain yield at shooting, i.e., before the second N application, when the N rate can still be adjusted. The SAT and UAV NDVIs were strongly correlated to each other, which means they can be used alternatively depending on the context.

Abstract:
NUST in Zimbabwe grapples with a significant challenge. Despite enrolling many students in chemical engineering, the nation lacks operational industries. Consequently, graduates often encounter difficulties securing employment or attachment placements post-graduation. This underscores the critical need to foster student entrepreneurship, encouraging innovation and idea generation. The study employed a mixed-methods research design to address this issue, combining qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The quantitative aspect utilized a quasi-experimental pre-test and post-test design, while the qualitative component involved conducting focus group interviews with chemical engineering students in the experimental group. The findings from both approaches complemented each other, providing a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing entrepreneurial propensity among NUST chemical engineering students. Data collection involved distributing research instruments and questionnaires to NUST students and individuals associated with the mining and pharmaceutical industries. The collected data were then entered into an Excel spreadsheet, allowing for the recording of respondents' numbers alongside their respective responses. The study applied descriptive statistics to evaluate responses and their alignment with research objectives, revealing barriers to entrepreneurial inclination among NUST chemical engineering students, such as limited resources, risk aversion, inadequate entrepreneurial education, and cultural norms. Students benefited from personal motivation, a supportive educational atmosphere, networking opportunities, and exposure to innovative ideas. These factors nurtured self-determination, social networking, and an entrepreneurial mindset. To foster entrepreneurial spirit among NUST chemical engineering students, the study suggests educational reforms, mentorship programs, and potential policy changes create an enabling environment, empowering students to pursue entrepreneurship and contribute to economic growth.

Abstract:
Focusing on three of Dutilleux's mid to late orchestral works - "Timbres, espace, movement ou La Nuit etoile" (1978), "The Shadows of Time" (1997) and "Sur le meme accord" (2002) - this article gives insight into Henri Dutilleux's scale-defined pitch organization techniques and the role of colour in the works of the French composer. The paper questions the ambiguous relationship between tonality and modality, and asserts the previously only peripherally attested importance of modes for Dutilleux's works. An analysis of pitch organization demonstrates how Dutilleux's aesthetic and literature-inspired concepts of "progressive growing" function musically by foregrounding pivot chords or notes, and how their return reflects the idea of involuntary memory ("memo ire involuntaire") derived from Marcel Proust's "A la recherche du temps perdu".

Abstract:
An experiment sturdy has been carried out for jet impingement cooling on the spherically convex surface is the development of mechanism. The effect of curvature, Space between jet exit and target surface, and Reynolds number on heat transfer is investigated for around air jet on hemispherical surface. The flow at the jet exit has fully developed velocity profile. A uniform heat flux boundary is created on the heated surface. The experiments are performed for 5000<Re<25000, 2<L/d<10, and jet diameters ranging from 1.3, 2.1, 3.4, 4.0 and 5.2 cm. In the mean time effect of curvature on local heat transfer is negligible at the wall jet region corresponding to r/d>0.5. From the experimental results the variation of the D/d ratio with local Nusselt number (Nust) for various Reynolds numbers and various L/d ratios are plotted. The results show that Nust increase with increase in curvature and the effect of the curvature will high at high Reynolds number. i.e. Nust at Re=25000 is 25% higher than at Re= 5000 This may be attributed to an increase in curvature increases acceleration, & size of three dimensional counter rotating vortices at stagnation point and the increment of Reynolds number increases the jet momentum, and also enhances the vortices creation. Nust is peaking in the L/d ratio of 6 because of high turbulence intensity as this distance.

Abstract:
Respiration and stem water potential ( psi ) were examined in parental and hybrid big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt. ssp. tridentata and Artemisia tridentata Nutt. ssp. vaseyana (Rydb.) Beetle) grown in common gardens within each parental zone and in the hybrid zone. Plants were sampled in July, August, and September, i.e., immediately before, during, and after flowering. The habitats differed from one another, and there were significant garden by date interactions. The source populations also differed significantly from one another. There were no significant garden by source interactions. Hybrid plants had intermediate respiration rates and did not suffer greater water stress than parental plants. Hybrid plants showed no apparent decrease in adaptation in the important physiological traits respiration and water stress in the hybrid zone.Key words: Artemisia, hybrid zones, respiration, water potential.

Abstract:
Between Senegalese tradition and French neo-colonialism: Systematic oppression of young girls in La nuit est tombée sur Dakar by Aminata Zaaria. The purpose of this article is to examine the systematic, intercultural oppression of young girls in La nuit est tombée sur Dakar, a 2004 novel by the Senegalese author Aminata Zaaria. Her female protagonists, two seventeenyear- olds, subject themselves to sexual exploitation by white men in order to escape poverty. In their birthplace, the village of Lëndëm (‘darkness’ in Wolof, the most commonly spoken language in Senegal), the girls are forced into traditional gender roles from a very young age, i.e. their sexuality is strictly controlled by men. This environment is, however, influenced by the Western way of life: on TV and in glossy magazines, Europe is presented as a paradise on earth. Dakar, viewed by the elder inhabitants of Lëndëm as a “cursed city”, is a place where white men have all the power and, just as in colonial times, they use it in order to sexually abuse African women. By analysing traditional society from a sociological perspective (based on the works of Abdoulaye Bara Diop and Rosalie Aduyai Diop), as well as by applying the postcolonial and psychological theoretical framework to the dynamics presented in the text, this paper strives to demonstrate that it is difficult to speak of “freedom of choice” in the case of a vulnerable, traumatised subject. For both protagonists, this “disguised prostitution” is a survival strategy, going beyond a simple materialism: they are led to believe that it is a small price to pay for a better life. The article presents intercultural oppression as a double-edged sword in that in every environment, young girls are treated as mere objects, expected to silently play their roles.

Abstract:
AbstractObjective:Different manufacturers recommend different levels of disinfection for oxygen nipple and nut adaptors, also known as Christmas-tree adaptors (CTAs). We aimed to determine the bacterial contamination rates of CTAs before and after clinical use and whether disinfection wipes effectively eliminate bacteria from CTAs.Methods:CTAs were swabbed for bacteria directly from the shipment box or after use in a medical intensive care unit to determine levels of contamination. CTAs were also inoculated in the laboratory with a variety of bacteria and disinfected with either 0.5% hydrogen peroxide (Oxivir 1) or 0.25% tetra-ammonium chloride with 44.50% isopropyl alcohol (Super Sani-Cloth), and the effectiveness of each wipe was determined by comparing the bacterial recovery before and after disinfection. Results:CTAs exhibit low levels of bacterial burden before and after clinical use. Both disinfecting wipes were effective at removing bacteria from the CTAs.Conclusions:Low-level disinfection of CTAs is appropriate prior to redeployment in the clinical setting.

Abstract:
Night and voices in Journal d’un curé de campagne How the Journal d’un curé de campagne is written is intimately linked to the night because of the narrator’s insomnia. We will demonstrate that this night is the expression of an inner night, through the carmelite mysticism of John of the Cross. The writing is purified by the silence and anguish of the priest's mystical night: we will see that his writing becomes a prayer, that is to say, the hosting of divine and human voices in silence, based on Jean-Louis Chrétien’s phenomenological approach of prayer. This idea of writing will allow us to understand the relationship of Bernanos himself to his own writing: this nightly writing listens and gives voice to those who have none.

Abstract:
Filed collected rosettes or twigs of Centaurea diffusa De Lamarck, infested by the gall mite Aceria centaureae, were fixed onto appropriately grown and planted test plants of ten different species in the area of Thessaloniki, Greece, in 1985 and 1986. The test plants were inspected for presence of galls and mites a few to several days after their contact with the infested twigs. Gall formation occurred on all of the Centaurea diffusa test plants, either of Greek or U.S. origin, and on some of the Centaurea solstitialis, L. test plants. No galls or other mite damage could be found on the other test plants, which were Carthamus tinctorius L. (safflower), Cirsiton creticion (De Lamarck) D’Urville, of local origin and six Cirsium species of U.S. origin, i.e. cymosum (Greene) J. T. Howell, occidentals (Nutt) Jeps., pastoris Howell, andersonii (Gray) Petrak, brevistylum Crong; and undulation (Nutt.) Spreng. These results suggest that A. centaureae most probably has a very restricted host plant range, feeding only on weedy Centaurea spp. Thus the mite should be considered as a possible candidate for biological control of diffuse knapweed in the U.S.A. and Canada.

We study other perturbations of hyperbolic polynomials of the form pa(z, s) := . We give a full characterization of those a = (a1 , . . . , ad ) ∈ ℝd for which pa(z, s) is a pencil of hyperbolic polynomials. We also give a full characterization of those a = (a1 , . . . , ad ) ∈ ℝd for which the associated families pa(z, s) admit universal determinantal representations. In fact, we show that all these sequences come fromspecial symmetric Toeplitz matrices.

Abstract:
AbstractAlasia Nuti’s important recent book, Injustice and the Reproduction of History: Structural Inequalities, Gender and Redress (2019), makes many persuasive interventions. Nuti shows how structural injustice theory is enriched by being explicitly historical; in theorizing historical-structural injustice, she lays bare the mechanisms of how the injustices of history reproduce themselves. For Nuti, historical-structural patterns are not only shaped by habitual behaviors that are or appear to be morally permissible, but also by individual wrongdoing and wrongdoing by powerful group agents like states. In this article, I extend Nuti’s rich analysis, focusing on two questions that arise from her theory of historical-structural injustice: (1) Beyond being blameworthy for wrongful acts themselves, are culpable wrongdoers blameworthy for contributing to structural injustice? (2) Does historical moral ignorance mitigate moral responsibility for past injustice? Regarding (1), I distinguish between the local and societal structural effects of wrongdoing. Though I think this distinction is well-founded, it ultimately leads to tensions with structural injustice theory’s idea of ordinary individuals being blameless for reproducing unjust structures. Regarding (2), I argue that even though it is natural for the question of historical moral ignorance to arise in considering past wrongdoing, at least in the case of powerful group agents, we should not overlook forms of cruelty which present-day moral concepts are not needed to condemn.

Abstract:
Ice crystals in cells of frozen wood increase the wood's modulus of elasticity so that branches become more rigid at colder temperatures. As temperature increases after a snowstorm, melting of crystals within the cells allows increased bending of branches under intercepted snow loads. Measurements of the force that produced a 10-cm deflection of branch tips of subalpine fir (Abieslasiocarpa (Hook.) Nutt.) and lodgepole pine (Pinuscontorta var. latifolia Engelm.) showed a linear decrease as temperature rose from −12 to 0 °C. Model predictions for the bending of a tapered branch supported the hypothesis that increased bending can explain unloading of intercepted snow under certain conditions when warming occurs after snowstorms.

Abstract:
In this work, we study the equatorial causal geodesics of the Taub–NUT (TN) spacetime in comparison with massless TN spacetime. We emphasized both on the null circular geodesics and time-like circular geodesics. From the effective potential diagram of null and time-like geodesics, we differentiate the geodesics structure between TN spacetime and massless TN spacetime. It has been shown that there is a key role of the NUT parameter to changes the shape of pattern of the potential well in the NUT spacetime in comparison with massless NUT spacetime. We compared the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO), marginally bound circular orbit (MBCO) and circular photon orbit (CPO) of the said spacetime with graphically in comparison with massless cases. Moreover, we compute the radius of ISCO, MBCO and CPO for extreme TN black hole (BH). Interestingly, we show that these three radii coincides with the Killing horizon, i.e. the null geodesic generators of the horizon. Finally in Appendix A, we compute the center-of-mass (CM) energy for TN BH and massless TN BH. We show that in both cases, the CM energy is finite. For extreme NUT BH, we found that the diverging nature of CM energy. First, we have observed that a non-asymptotic flat, spherically symmetric and stationary extreme BH showing such feature.

Abstract:
The demand for plant-based foods to meet the vegan public and/or individuals allergic to milk protein has increased, leading to the development of new products for this market. This work aimed to use mixed plant extracts to produce peanut-flavored and cocoa-flavored vegan ice creams. A mixed water-soluble plant extract (EHMBC) was prepared using water-soluble plant extracts of baru nuts (EHCB) and cashew nuts (EHCC) at a 60:40 v/v ratio. Then, the mixed extract was used to produce (i) cocoa-flavored and (ii) peanut-flavored vegan ice cream formulations. The peanut-flavored ice cream showed higher lipids (16.16%) and proteins (9.85%) levels, and lower moisture (54.24%) and carbohydrates (18.28%) levels when compared to the cocoa-flavored ice cream. No significant difference (p>0.05) was observed for the parameter ash between the ice creams. After 90 minutes of melting, the cocoa-flavored ice cream exhibited a higher melting rate and overrun when compared to the peanut-flavored ice cream, with values of 90.90 and 21.97 %, and 56.82 and 18.62%, respectively. The peanut-flavored ice cream was characterized for the fatty acid profile, and 9 different types were identified, with a greater proportion for the oleic acid. Therefore, the use of plant extracts in the manufacture of vegan products may be an effective approach, but further studies are required to evaluate the consumers’ acceptance of the product.

Abstract:
The author tries to make an attempt to define the term „ecologism” because of its equivocality. For some authors, it is an idea, which has to be included in life to protect people and the world before extermination, whereas for others it is a contemporary variety of an ideology which could be quite dangerous for a man. The author defines it as treating ecologism as a new political stream near to conservatism, liberalism, and socialism. Taking into consideration the philosophical and ethical categories using in the environmental philosophy the author explains that ecologism should be connected with the anthropocentric model for environmental ethics, then it will not be dangerous for a man. This ethical stream can also be...with the paradigm of balanced development.

Abstract:
This paper applies the theoretical concept of ‘acts of positioning’ (Davis & Harré 1990) to a qualitative and quantitative analysis of 474 status updates (SUs) taken from the Facebook Walls of twenty individuals living in Switzerland and the UK. Our aim is to analyze how individuals construct their identities through the use of language. The results show that individuals position themselves in five central ways, i.e., they stress aspects of their personality, pastime endeavors, sense of humor, work and relationship. Through a subsequent analysis of 228 reactions to status updates (RSUs), we also address how these acts are responded to, and thereby demonstrate that individuals predominantly support identity claims made in the SUs. Our paper contributes to existing research on language and identity in social network sites (SNSs), and demonstrates the fruitful application of the concept of ‘acts of positioning’.

<p>Naukowe analizy pełnią funkcje społeczne jako ważny głos w debacie publicznej. W Polsce bliskość dyskursu akademickiego i publicznego umacnia jeszcze tradycja obywatelskich zadań intelektualistów. Abstract:
Aqueous fractions in dormant buds of Amelanchier alnifolia Nutt. `Smoky', may exist either as liquid, ice or glass phases depending on the temperature history and the water content of the tissue. Phase diagrams for these states were constructed from differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) freezing and warming scans. The diagrams show that glass transition temperatures shift to warmer temperatures as cold hardening increases and as the water content is lowered by controlled desiccation. Glass transitions were detected from -60 to -20° C, during slow freezing scans in the DSC, suggesting that survival of this extremely cold hardy tissue is based upon a potential to undergo glass transitions in the dormant state. Endogenous raffinose family oligosaccharides (RFO) increase during cold hardening, and decrease as hardiness diminishes with the onset of growth.

Abstract:
Abstract: Functional products are currently attracting a lot of research interest. Modern people’s diet does not satisfy their need for nutrients, vitamins and minerals, and functional products can make it more balanced. In particular, our diet is lacking in protein. This paper discusses the prospects for enriching dairy products with plant protein derived from pine nuts and their products. Pine nut paste, fat-free milk, and oil cake are a valuable source of fatty acids, vitamins, and microelements. The protein, lipid, vitamin, and mineral content of these products makes them suitable for combining with milk. Their water-holding and fat-emulsifying capacities allow their use as stabilizers and emulsifiers. Siberian pine nuts grow wild in the Kemerovo Region, which makes their use as a raw material economically feasible. The article introduces a number of functional dairy products enriched with pine nut products, such as cheese, ice cream, and cottage cheese. Further, it describes the production process and the products’ nutritional value. The chemical composition of new types of dairy products shows that using pine nut oil cake, fat-free flour, paste, and oil enriches them with plant proteins, vegetable fats, vitamins as well as macro- and microelements. Replacing dairy raw materials with plants does not reduce the nutritional value of new dairy products. Dairy foods are rich in protein, fat, and minerals. The vitamin content of new dairy products with functional ingredients is similar to that of dairy-based products. Moreover, using functional products (pine nut oil cake, fat-free flour, paste, and oil) enriches new types of dairy products with tocopherols.

Abstract:
Abstract: Readers understand fictional worlds at least to some extent by drawing on background knowledge of their own world. Some theories of fiction, however, hold that such realistic expectations, or processes of naturalization, are the default attitude in experiencing fictions. Thus, what Marie-Laure Ryan has called the principle of minimal departure (MD) states that readers understand fictional worlds and their components by drawing on background knowledge of their own world, unless otherwise indicated. This article is a critical examination of the relevance of the principle of MD and a contextualization of other theoretical notions of readerly attitude, including Thomas Pavel's principles of maximal departure (MxD) and optimal departure (OD) and Kendall L. Walton's principle of charity, within the broader framework of fictional verisimilitude and believability. The question of relevance will be discussed in relation to the idea of the contract of fiction by which is meant the knowledge that one is reading fiction. The analytic sections of this article focus on the question of fictional narrative situation, which in Ryan's possible-worlds theory functions as the trademark of fiction—as narrators and narratees (or narrative audiences) are exempted from the operations of MD. The "impossible" narrative situations that serve as examples include Jorge Luis Borges's loosely autobiographical story "Funes el memorioso" (1942) and two nineteenth-century French fictions: Guy de Maupassant's short story "La nuit" (1887) and a passage from Émile Zola's roman à thèse, Lourdes (1894).

Abstract:
Secondary xylem characteristics were compared in four species of Phoradendron Nutt. (Viscaceae) native to California. All have extremely short, thick-walled vessel elements with simple perforation plates. They also share high vessel density, radial vessel arrangement, thick-walled fibres, and multiseriate, heterocellular rays. The fibres show considerable intrusive growth. Features of the vessel elements (i.e. vessel dimensions, arrangement, type of wall sculpturing) and calcium oxalate crystals in the ray parenchyma cells are useful diagnostic traits to separate species. Grooved vessel walls are shared by the morphologically similar P. villosum and P. macrophyllum. Differences between these two species may reflect contrasting drought response strategies pursued by respective hosts. Vulnerability and mesomorphy ratios of the wood of P. californicum are higher than those of P. pauciflorum and P. macrophyllum. Phoradendron pauciflorum has the most xeromorphic wood of the four species studied.

Abstract:
One of the main objectives of walnut crossbreeding programmes is to produce cultivars with late leafing dates. Sixteen years ago, a walnut crossbreeding programme was initiated by Prof. Mehmet Sütyemez, and now a new walnut genotype, namely ‘Ahir Nut’, has been generated with a leafing date that starts later than all commercially-famous walnut cultivars in the world. The present study describes this walnut genotype. For a detailed analysis, ‘Ahir Nut’ was compared with two French-origin walnut cultivars, i.e., ‘Franquette’ and ‘Ronde de Montignac’, which have had the latest leafing dates until now. In an experimental orchard in Turkey, the leafing date in ‘Ahir Nut’ was 14 May, whereas the leafing date in ‘Franquette’ and ‘Ronde de Montignac’ were 23 April and 25 April, respectively. This approximately 3-week difference between ‘Franquette’ and ‘Ronde de Montignac’ to ‘Ahir Nut’ reveals how valuable this genotype is for walnut breeding studies. The harvest dates for ‘Ahir Nut’, ‘Franquette’ and ‘Ronde de Montignac’ were 4 October, 3 October, and 7 October, respectively. The defoliation date for ‘Ahir Nut’ was 4 December. The nut weight and kernel percentage of ‘Ahir Nut’ were calculated as 11.61 g and 49.84%, respectively. Remarkable phenological traits were found in ‘Ahir Nut’, making it a promising option for future walnut cultivation. In the present study, the late leafing date of ‘Ahir Nut’ prompted further research into the molecular and walnut crossbreeding potentials. This new genotype has been conserved as an important genetic resource for future walnut breeding programmes around the world.

Abstract:
In urban Africa today, like elsewhere, the purported survival strategies of individuals are determined constantly by severe material constraints. The poor and the new poor are overwhelmingly new city dwellers dependent on precarious, intermittent odd jobs (petits boulots; single women with small children; young school dropouts (déscolarisés, condemned to the expediencies of the streets, illicit actions and, in many cases, delinquency; unemployed graduates (diplomés-chômeurs), without opportunities for paid employment; as well as those designated successively in the vernacular as conjoncturés, déflatés and compressés (i.e. affected by wage reductions, permanent employees downgraded to temporary contracts or casual labour, and workers who have lost their jobs through massive redundancies). These individuals can meet only the most basic needs (eating, feeding their children, paying the rent). When survival becomes an issue, long-term strategies tend to be constrained by the need to fulfil the most basic needs and daily necessities. At any rate, pursuit of this objective does not involve selective mobilization of optimized means, when those who admittedly are looking out for themselves (se cherchent), rummage about (grouillent à droite [et] à gauche), pursue small jobs in unskilled manual labour or portering, or as night watchmen (racolage pour trouver des petits contrats de manoeuvrage, de manutention ou de veilleur de nuit), search constantly for opportunities to sell items that they bought for a little bit less, inland or across the border. They may also try to establish a business or small craft shop and, during the interim, get by with difficulty thanks to sporadic aid from relatives who are also unemployed.

Abstract:
In the field of precision machining, temperature fluctuation tends to cause the most significant machining errors. In particular, heat, which is generated in the nut of the ball screw feed system during movement, can deform the screw shaft significantly. In order to calculate and evaluate the thermal deformation of the ball screw shaft, the rate of the heat transfer from the nut to the screw shaft must be known. This rate can be calculated by subtracting the heat transfer rate to the nut raceway from the heat generation rate of the nut. Hence, it is necessary to calculate the heat flux from the nut to the nut raceway. This paper introduces a novel method to calculate the heat flux from the nut to the nut raceway. The new approach also enables calculations for different operating conditions. Furthermore, an experimental setup is established to measure the temperature increase, from 0 to 180 s after the nut starts moving, for various operating conditions. It is then theoretically shown that the 0–180 s temperature increase/heat flux curves for the nut are “universal”, i.e., the curve remains unchanged for the different operating conditions. Subsequently, a thermal model using the finite element method (FEM) is developed to simulate the nut temperature increase over time, which is then compared with the experimental data. As a result, it becomes possible to determine the heat flux from the nut to the nut raceway and calculate the 0–180 s temperature increase/heat flux curve (ΔT˜0~180s,Training Data) for the training group. Finally, the heat flux from the nut to the nut raceway is calculated for ten different operating conditions in the test group using the 0–180 s temperature increase/heat flux curve of the training group (ΔT˜0~180s,Training Data). The corresponding temperature curves are then calculated by inputting the values of the heat fluxes into the FEM model. The highest root mean square error (RMSE) between the calculated and experimentally measured temperature increase was 0.16 °C for Test 7 (the error was 10.7%). This result indicates that the new method is valid and feasible for calculating the heat flux from a ball screw nut to the nut raceway.

Abstract:
The Saskatoon berry (Amelanchier alnifolia Nutt.) is a prospective and increasingly popular species in Poland. Its main attributes are extremely valuable fruits, rich in anthocyanins with high antioxidant activity, which are very valuable in processing. Studies aimed at comparing the suitability for cultivation under the climatic and soil conditions of east Poland of the three Canadian cultivars of Saskatoon berry (‘Honeywood’, ‘Martin’ and ‘Pembina’), were conducted at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences in 2017–2018. The study evaluated parameters such as yield and fruit quality, as well as the health-promoting value of the fruit. These studies revealed significant differences between the studied cultivars, both in yield and in fruit physicochemical properties, i.e., fruit mass and diameter, firmness, and soluble solids content, as well as in terms of the content of anthocyanins, flavonoids, and polyphenols. These differences were also found between years, which may indicate that the content of the abovementioned compounds is also influenced by annual climatic conditions.

It is shown that the end of growth activity and the transition to a dormant state before the onset of a sub-zero temperature period contributes to better stability during the winter season. A relationship was found between winter hardiness of shoots and relative growth, i.e. the stronger the annual growth was, the greater the percentage of frost-beating from the total height of the seedling was observed. The results of the experiment approve the introduction method of climatic analogues of G. Mayr.

Abstract:
The Open Building in the context of the housing crisis in Poland The housing crisis is one of the biggest challenges in Poland. Potential remedies are investments in which public and private funds are allocated respectively for land, a construction, a building infrastructure, and the infill, i.e. the building envelope and equipment. The method of dividing investments according to the above scheme is called Open Building (OB). It assumes the flexible shaping of the usable area of buildings constructed in cooperation between public and private investors, including future residents. The research aims to analyse the Open Building as a potential element of Polish housing policy. The adopted research method consists of the analysis of the housing situation in Poland, analysis of the OB and realized investments complying with its assumptions, as well as indicating a possible implementation strategy of OB as an element of counteracting housing exclusion.

Abstract:
Abstract. The Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology Earth System Model version 3 (NESM v3) has been developed, aiming to provide a numerical modeling platform for cross-disciplinary Earth system studies, project future Earth climate and environment changes, and conduct subseasonal-to-seasonal prediction. While the previous model version NESM v1 simulates the internal modes of climate variability well, it has no vegetation dynamics and suffers considerable radiative energy imbalance at the top of the atmosphere and surface, resulting in large biases in the global mean surface air temperature, which limits its utility to simulate past and project future climate changes. The NESM v3 has upgraded atmospheric and land surface model components and improved physical parameterization and conservation of coupling variables. Here we describe the new version's basic features and how the major improvements were made. We demonstrate the v3 model's fidelity and suitability to address global climate variability and change issues. The 500-year preindustrial (PI) experiment shows negligible trends in the net heat flux at the top of atmosphere and the Earth surface. Consistently, the simulated global mean surface air temperature, land surface temperature, and sea surface temperature (SST) are all in a quasi-equilibrium state. The conservation of global water is demonstrated by the stable evolution of the global mean precipitation, sea surface salinity (SSS), and sea water salinity. The sea ice extents (SIEs), as a major indication of high-latitude climate, also maintain a balanced state. The simulated spatial patterns of the energy states, SST, precipitation, and SSS fields are realistic, but the model suffers from a cold bias in the North Atlantic, a warm bias in the Southern Ocean, and associated deficient Antarctic sea ice area, as well as a delicate sign of the double ITCZ syndrome. The estimated radiative forcing of quadrupling carbon dioxide is about 7.24 W m−2, yielding a climate sensitivity feedback parameter of −0.98 W m−2 K−1, and the equilibrium climate sensitivity is 3.69 K. The transient climate response from the 1 % yr−1 CO2 (1pctCO2) increase experiment is 2.16 K. The model's performance on internal modes and responses to external forcing during the historical period will be documented in an accompanying paper.

Abstract:
The inherent clinal responses of four quantitative traits thought to be adaptive for trees in cold-limited environments (i.e., height-growth cessation, growth rate, resource allocation to aboveground and belowground tissues, and resource allocation to photosynthetic and nonphotosynthetic tissues in the shoot) were characterized under nonlimiting conditions in a controlled glasshouse study for seedlings of three ecologically distinct and co-occurring northern tree species (Pinus contorta Dougl. var. latifolia Engelm. (lodgepole pine), Picea glauca (Moench) Voss × Picea engelmannii Parry ex Engelm. (interior spruce), and Abies lasiocarpa (Hook.) Nutt. (subalpine fir)). For each species, clinal trends were quantified among populations adapted to increasingly cold-limited climates across an elevation gradient approaching the tree line. In subalpine fir seedlings, strong clinal variation for all the quantitative traits indicated an increasingly conservative response to climate moving toward harsher conditions. Variation in lodgepole pine and interior spruce seedlings suggested a more plastic strategy, favoring competitive traits across a wide range of climate conditions. Study findings suggest that ecologically distinct species may exhibit different strategies in adapting to local climates.

Abstract:
The first decades of the 20 th century marked the beginning of fundamental changes in artistic expressions and in the very perception and understanding of Ukrainian and French national arts. Limiting ourselves in this article to the analysis of artistic prose speech, and more specifically, the genre of the novel, we see that not only the method and style of presenting the author’s idea, but also the very concept of literary expressiveness underwent revolutionary changes. Figures of both writers, V. Domontovych and L.-F. Celine, cause different attitudes from their fellow citizens. Their actions and views are not always completely understandable and generally known to us today. At the same time, it is impossible not to note the numerous parallel, although often completely different approaches to artistic and literary expression on the part of both writers. The purpose of the article is to identify such parallels and differences in the creative styles of writers. L.-F. Seline’s roman “Voyage au bout de la nuit” and V. Domontovych’s novel “Soilless” are the subject of analysis. In author’s languages, mainly their rhythmic and melodic features are analyzed. The texts are studied by the method of their comparative analysis in view of the national, historical, cultural and biographical and professional features characteristic of both authors. On the basis of the conducted research, we reach conclusions according to which the creative styles of V. Domontovych and L.-F. Celine is likened by the conciseness of the expression; clearly expressed, often syncopated, rhythmic pattern; elements of sound expressive features of artistic expression; the ability to increase and decrease the tempo and increase or decrease the volume; virtuoso manipulation of lexical means of speech. Morphologically, adjectives play a decisive role in describing characters and situations.

Abstract:
AbstractActivated carbon prepared from agricultural byproducts and wastes could be used as an absorbent for dye removal from aqueous solution. Moreover, Vietnam has presently become one of the world's biggest cashew processing countries. Cashew nut shell has been considered as a hazardous solid waste. The wasted cashew nut shell should be used as a low cost source of activated carbon absorbent. The main approaches of this study are to optimize the conditions of activated carbon production from cashew nut shell and understand the adsorption mechanism of how the dye absorb onto cashew nut shell activated carbon. The absorption model developed in this study could be useful guide for assessing the independent impacts as well as the interactions between the impact parameters and give a good idea to enhance the absorption capacity. The experimental data was fitted well to the pseudo‐first and pseudo‐second order as well as the Elovich model at different initial MB concentrations. The inconsistence of the best‐fit‐kinetic model might result in difficulties in comprehensive understanding of adsorption mechanism. Other impacts, such as competitions of components, particle size could be included in next studies to develop the absorption models of the specific activated carbon prepared from cashew nut shell.

Abstract:
Oil spill accident occur due to human carelessness and error during oil transportation, storage, and production of the hydrocarbon. Effect of oil spill can be either short or long term. It is not only affecting the environment but also marine life, economy, and social. Thus, effective recovery and control method must be carefully implemented to minimise the effect. There are various studies and technologies to mitigate the oil spill incident but mostly the techniques are very expensive, difficult and use of non-environmental friendly material. Hence, this study is conducted to study areca nut husk as a potential oil adsorbent for oil spill recovery. The characteristics of areca nut husk include morphological structures and chemical composition. The areca nut husk oil sorption effectiveness and capacity also been investigated. Areca nut husk were tested for both heavy crude oil and diesel adsorption. The result shows that the efficiency of oil sorption of areca nut husk toward heavy crude oil is 14.8% and it can be an alternative sorbent material to the current modern material. Meanwhile, the areca nut husk is not recommended to be used for diesel absorption activity for its low effectiveness (i.e., 2.04%) showed in this study.

Abstract:
Abstract ALMOPOL is an interactive computer-based model that simulates the interactions of weather, bloom phenology, blossom quality, and honey bee foraging behavior that culminate in almond [Prunus dulcis (Mill) D. A. Webb] nut set. ALMOPOL enables users to enter orchard conditions, colonies per hectare, and foragers per colony. Information concerning honey bee foraging behaviors and blossom quality (i.e., a blossom's probability of setting a nut if cross-pollinated) can also be entered interactively into the program. Hence, nut set estimates are specific for a given set of weather, orchard, bee behavior, and blossom quality conditions. A description of the logic and data used in ALMOPOL's construction is included.

Abstract:
Over the past decade, pecans (Carya illinoinensis) have experienced slow to stagnant growth as other nuts see continual growth. Given demand, producers and retailers are needing to finding new ways to market pecans. Using a conjoint experiment with market segmentation, the market for several value-added pecan products (e.g., cinnamon sugar, chocolate-covered, salted and roasted, pralines, and plain roasted) were assessed. Three to four segments within the market were found depending on product size. For a 1.5-oz product, there are three segments (Budget Traditional, Sugar Origin, and Sugar High) that value product attributes differently. The Budget Traditional values plain roasted pecans and has the largest negative reaction to higher prices. The Sugar Origin segment values pralines and chocolate-covered pecans while also valuing Oklahoma- and Texas-produced pecans. The Sugar High segment has a positive preference for chocolate-covered, and pralines and a disdain for cinnamon sugar, salted and roasted, and plain roasted. Examining the 8-oz package size, there are four market segments. The Budget Traditional and Sugar High are similar to the 1.5-oz package size; however, the 8-oz market also has a Price Sensitive segment that highly values low prices as well as a Cinnamon Hater segment that does not like cinnamon sugar pecans. Demographics and past purchasing are key factors for explaining how a consumer is likely to be grouped into segments. Age (i.e., generation) and whether a consumer had purchased nuts within the past year were important indicators across package size.

Abstract:
Growers and extension personnel need an easy to use method to help diagnose common problems of macadamia nut (Macadamia integrifolia). The Apple Macintosh®) computer and the software HyperCard® provides one such system. We developed a hypermedia stack (file) that gives users the two options of helping diagnose a problem or providing additional information on a problem and its solution. Twenty-three of the most common problems of macadamia nut in Hawaii are coveted including insects, diseases, nutritional deficiencies, harvest, postharvest handling, herbicide injury, poor flowering, and premature nut drop. With the first option, the program asks the user on what part of the tree does the problem exist--leaves, flowers, nuts, branches, trunk, roots, or the entire tree. It then displays pictures of symptoms of problems specific to that part of the tree, and the user indicates whether these symptoms are present. The program gives the user additional information on the problem, its cause, conditions conducive to the problem, and possible solutions to resolve the problem. With the second option, i.e., if the user already knows the name of the problem, the additional information and solution are shown immediately. This program provides growers and extension personnel with a simple, quick, computerized tool to diagnose problems and access information and solutions.

Abstract:
We derive a correspondence between the Hawking radiation spectra emitted from general classes of Taub-NUT black holes with that induced by the relativistic motion of an accelerated Dirichlet boundary condition (i.e., a perfectly reflecting mirror) in (1+1)-dimensional flat spacetime. We demonstrate that the particle and energy spectra is thermal at late times and that particle production is suppressed by the NUT parameter. We also compute the radiation spectrum in the rotating, electrically charged (Kerr–Newman) Taub-NUT scenario, and the extremal case, showing, explicitly, how these parameters affect the outgoing particle and energy fluxes.

Abstract:
Elite winter sports have become increasingly professionalized and commercialized, often accompanied by congested competition schedules. This has brought the topic of load management, i.e., planning, monitoring, and adaptation, enormous attention in the scientific community. In this review, we summarize the general knowledge from various sports about training load and its effects on injuries and illnesses. After outlining the fundamentals of load monitoring, we present common monitoring tools, i.e., neuromuscular performance tests, heart rate measures, blood-based biomarkers, and questionnaires and discuss their potentials and pitfalls in application. Studies have identified training load-related variables, but also other factors such as travelling, previous injuries, or age contributing to the occurrence of illness and injury. Based on our findings, the use of monitoring tools must be context-specific and long-term, considering statistical aspects as well. Promising study designs and future perspectives are finally highlighted, with the general conclusion that there is still a clear need for research on this topic in general and in the field of winter sports in particular.

Abstract:
Synopsis Steve Holder had already worked with Matsapha College for ten years as the organization matured its macadamia orchard to the point of yielding sufficient proceeds to assist in the support of the colleges educational endeavors in Swaziland. Now Matsapha College was entertaining the possibility of launching a separate entity, Kumnandzi Macadamia Importers, to be a stateside distributor of both Matsapha's macadamia nuts and that of other growers in the region, with the prospect of producing additional revenue to help sponsor education. The Board of Matsapha College is interested in the idea of having the College prosper from added macadamia sales, but members have mixed opinions about the direction and form this growth should take. Before any major decisions are made, Steve learns that the organization should do some self-reflection and decide what Kumnandzi Macadamia Importers is all about before proceeding. Specifically, the Matsapha College Board of Directors needs to articulate its vision for the proposed new entity, as well as craft the entity's mission statement and value proposition. Research methodology The case was based upon extensive interviews with the President of the organization being described. Relevant courses and levels This case is targeted to both undergraduate and graduate students in Strategic Management, but may include Marketing Principles, Marketing Management, Strategic Marketing, and Entrepreneurship, especially if the course includes the task of building a business plan or marketing plan that incorporates vision and mission statements as well as a customer value proposition.
