Coetzee, Coenraad J. W. "ICT convergence : impact on Namibian ICT operators." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/19806.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA) -- Stellenbosch University, 2007.
Today we face a reality where existing power relations concerning economical, political and cultural institutions and forces are changing. It is about more than just the right to use a technology in itself; it is a matter of having, or not having, access to infonnation and knowledge. The use of information and communications technology (lCT) is an important and powerful tool when it comes to distributing and sharing these resources (Bridges.arg, 2006). The unequal distribution of and the differences in the possibility to use rer effectively are often referred to by the term digital divide (DDN, 2006). Does this sound quite pessimistic? However, a change is taking place since all countries on earth from the richest to the poorest are actually increasing their Ier usage. The problem is that the developed countries are using convergence (three separate communication sectors: information technology, telecommunications and broadcasting merging to become a single communication service sector) to escalate their access to and use of ICf at a much higher speed, which in fact widens the digi tal divide instead of shrinking it (Bridges.org, 2006). Today no country can afford to neglect investments in ICf if it wishes to raise its living standards or to prevent it from being left behind as other countries exploits the possibilities of ICf. Why is ICf considered to be an effective tool for bridging the international digita1 divide? On the United Nations Development Programme's website one can read: " .. .ICf is an increasi ngly powerful tool for participating in global markets; promoting political accountability; improving the delivery of basic services; and enhancing local development opportunities" (UNOP, 2003). These aspects can be of great importance for developing countries in their effort to gain economic development and improvements. Furthermore, it is also a question about every human's right to have access to infonnation (Sida, 2004). According to Steve Case (AOL Time Warner, Chainnan of the Board) every decade has some word associated with it. In the 'SOs, it was the PC. In the '90s, it was the Internet. For the rest of this decade, the key word is going to be convergence (Thompson, 2003). In Namibia a digital divide exists between income groups as well as between the country's rural and urban population. Namibia is sti ll far from providing equal access to information, but Namibia is well positioned to deploy ICf to its advantage. Namibia has a functional telecommunication infrastructure, political stability and an attractive economic environment for investors. However. the geographic and social challenges of Namibia require innovative approaches and considerable effort. Competition and convergence will improve the situation. recommended to expand the set of potential drivers and specifically focus on the relation between convergence and economic growth.

Costello, Pat. "Towards a model of ICT adoption for the ICT Cluster." Thesis, University of Wolverhampton, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2436/88535.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the exploration of a framework for ICT adoption by ICT microsized companies in the West Midlands. The thesis evolved out of the author's sense of dissatisfaction with several cardinal aspects of traditional approaches to facilitating adoption of the latest technologies in small companies to enhance business performance. Four main weaknesses were identified: first, there is often a lack of a theoretical foundation for the approach taken with regard to interventions. Second, there is ample evidence to suggest that the environment of small companies is complex and volatile and fundamental to the economy and yet hitherto success of the support in this area is patchy. Third, the role of those working to support small companies is largely unsupported in terms of their understanding of the problems. Fourth, small companies themselves are often uninformed of the issues and unaware that simple changes will aid their approach to ICT adoption. Inspiration from three sources helped the author to develop the work behind this thesis and attempt to remedy weaknesses: first, the work of many researchers in ICT Evaluation methods and frameworks provided insights into the value placed on ICT within organisations and the subsequent impact of the perception of value. Second, developments in the study of SMEs provided new insights into the unique environment that exists within small companies and the issues that these organisations face on a daily basis. Third, research around the new field of EDI and eBusness adoption provided the basis for the exploration of frameworks and models that were applicable to the SME environment and could be developed to work with any technology adoption. This thesis is therefore the exploration of a new model for micro-companies, supported by a thorough grounding in these three areas, which was achieved by taking an exploratory research approach. The model will indicate to a small company the weaknesses in their environment regarding ICT adoption and what they need to do to increase the success rate of any proposed ICT adoption. The framework has been developed to incorporate the issues regarding the personal factors of the owner-manager, the firm, organisational readiness, external pressures, strategy and perceived value. The author describes the methodology behind the development of the framework and makes recommendations for improved ICT adoption initiatives. Application of the general methodology through exploratory research has resulted in new opportunities to embed the ethos and culture surrounding the issues in the framework into new projects developed as a result of Government intervention. The thesis proposes three main themes: first that an understanding of the issues inherent in small companies is necessary in order to work effectively in supporting them to make ICT adoption more successful in the future. Second, that a greater knowledge of these issues and the impact that adoption of technology has in small companies can assist those involved in intervention projects. Third, that by drawing together existing models this new framework can guide these companies in their own ability to adopt successfully and raise awareness regarding the need to address these factors. Taken together, these areas represent a new approach to ICT adoption. The thesis demonstrates originality in four key areas: 1. It extends and develops an understanding of the micro-company environment and the issues inherent when faced with the adoption of new technology. 2. It introduces a new model for use by micro-companies constructed from acknowledged academically grounded models, to develop and highlight their ability to adopt new technology successfully. 3. The exploration of the issues within the ICT sector gives unique insight to a vertical business sector. 4. Investigation of the sector within a UK sub-region gives new insights for that region giving an opportunity for intervention to be augmented by the findings.

Šebesta, Michal. "Management of IS/ICT with focus on ICT services outsourcing." Doctoral thesis, Vysoká škola ekonomická v Praze, 2010. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-261945.

Full text
Abstract:
Research on outsourcing has been around for several decades, while recent evolution in the information systems discipline towards ICT service commoditization significantly changes the context of decision-making. Services that are available on-demand via the Internet allow organizations implementing functions they demand in a fraction of time. This trend represents a chance for organizations seeking to use advanced ICT services without a need of major investments. Problem is the current lack of guidelines and tools for managing ICT services and their outsourcing. Given the trends on the ICT service market, it is expected that much of the IT management in the future will encompass the ICT services and utilize service-level structures. Methods currently available are either too broad or encompass only small part of the whole problem. Ad-hoc or unsound decisions in this area might cause major complications in terms of quality, usability, integration, and consequently influence total cost of organizational IT. Organizations need to either revise existing models or propose and implement completely new models to manage their IS/ICT. This thesis deals with the management of IS/ICT with focus on the ICT services outsourcing. It discusses available sourcing models in the literature and links them to the various interconnected areas. Based on these areas, it presents an integrated view on IT outsourcing strategies. Most importantly the thesis proposes an original concept for decision-making about outsourcing of ICT services named the SOURCER framework. This approach utilizes the presented outsourcing strategies, and introduces a complex methodology and decision-making criteria that will assist organizations with selection of ICT services in order to maintain and manage a most suitable ICT service portfolio. The decision-making is based on four essential viewpoints: function, costs, time, and quality. These viewpoints are discussed, individually analyzed, and serve as a basis for further research. The whole framework is developed and validated according to Design Science Research Methodology (DSRM). Individual components are evaluated using a survey among a group of selected IT managers. Proof of concept is then established by a case study on framework use in a real organization. This case study covers strategy specification, business--IT alignment, specifying service architecture and its interconnections, outsourcing, and management of the ICT service portfolio.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to describe benefits of benchmarking IT in wider context and benchmarking scope at all. I specify benchmarking as a process and mention basic rules and guidelines. Further I define IT benchmarking domains and describe possibilities of their use. Best known type of IT benchmark is cost benchmark which represents only a subset of benchmark opportunities. In this paper, is cost benchmark rather an imaginary first step to benchmarking contribution to company. IT benchmark is not only a method for comparing IT efficiency, but also a way to better co-ordinate IT work with company strategy or make IT work more transparent for their customers. IT benchmark facilitates continual improvement not only to internal IT processes, but also to services that IT provides and in consequence to supported business services. Reader will further familiarize with practical example of IT process benchmark and with specifics in benchmarking of outsourced processes. It should be possible based on this paper to set strategic aims in benchmarking. And second, to run an initial IT process benchmark project.

Abstract:
This thesis is a narrative account of the development of my living theory of practice as a teacher and information communications technologies (ICT) consultant with a national awarding body. Within my two workplaces I experience myself as a living contradiction when my values are denied in practice, in relation to the prohibition of full participation of all participants through the suppression of their voices, or by the imposition of too-rapid organisational change. The thesis accounts for how I have attempted to transform these unsatisfactory situations into life-affirming practices for all through exercising my educational influence in learning for personal and organisational sustainability. The significance of my research lies in my capacity to explain how I hold myself accountable for my improved practice as I develop emancipatory pedagogies and conditions that nurture personal and social wellbeing. I have generated my living theory of emancipatory practice through finding ways to enable myself and others to work in solidarity to exercise our agency through communicative action (Habermas 1975). This is accomplished through realising the potentials of ICT as a form of communicative action within actual and virtual communities of practice, which becomes a significant feature of the originality of my contribution to knowledge of my field. Originality is extended in the production of evidence to test the validity of my theorization of ICT as political action. The multimedia evidence base is continued in the production of a multimedia thesis that accompanies and embeds the linguistic form of the thesis, a communication of my parallel understanding of traditional forms of theory and pedagogy as subsets of their wider inclusional and relational forms. The thesis also explores how values may be clarified in the course of their emergence in practice and transformed into living standards of judgement.

Abstract:
This diploma thesis exmines the negative aspects of using information and communication technologies. The main attention is fosused on virtual reality, especially 3D projection in order to decide wheather the using of it has negative impact on phycal and psychological state of the user or not, which exactly are these impacts and what probably cause them. This first part is dedicated to expain concept and history of ICT, explonation of the multidimensional princip and content of each dimension. The following is determination of which ICT areas are currently struggling in their use with negative effects. Detected list of these areas is reduced to six specific technologies which common user has opportunities to experience. These particular technologies were examined as a form of questionnaire, which resulted in a determination of the most used one, ie virtual reality. Shortly afterwards was conducted an experiment imparting undesirable effects caused by using virtual reality. The other five selected technologies are discussed for the most important negatives with which has to face today. The main finding of this study is the identification the side effects of virtual reality based on different types of technologies which are anaglyf 3D projection, passive 3D projection, active 3D projection and comparing if adverse effects depends on the type. It also includes determining the rate of uptake in virtual reality.

Abstract:
This thesis introduces a class of epidemic diffusion models specifically tailored to the description and analysis of ICT technologies, by defining a dynamic potential market that depends on the network size of the number of individuals who have already adopted. Compared to traditional “stand alone” products, ICT technologies have peculiar characteristics and different adoption behaviours that can be explained by network effects and externalities. After an overview of the state of the art of the literature on the diffusion of innovations and on networks (chapter 1), the theoretical work is presented (chapter 2). Here, we carry out a systematic functional study leading to the construction of a class of new models, to their parameterization and analysis in comparative statics, and finally simulation. The basic Bass model, which assumes a fixed potential market, is taken as a reference for comparisons, beside being the backbone of our class of models. From the simulations, it emerges that our class of models is able to describe the network effects (and externalities) and their role in shaping the diffusion of such technologies. In chapter 3, we test the capability of this class of models to explain empirically, with market data, the historical ICT diffusion paths, trying to derive useful implications for the policy-maker (for example, in the realm of contemporary digital agendas). This chapter features the NLS econometric estimation of the previous models, taking as a reference the real diffusion paths of broadband technologies in selected EU countries: in particular, we focus on the ITU time series of fixed broadband subscriptions of the "five big" European countries. The econometric estimates confirm that our class of models provides an original analytical and empirical instrument for capturing and stylizing the network phenomena that dominate the diffusion paths of the main telecommunications and media markets, such as fixed broadband. As such, it also enables a series of future policy evaluation exercises.

Nilsson, Mathias, and Adam Ådnanes. "ICT-behov och -verktyg inom byggproduktion : En undersökning av användbarheten, användarvänligheten och implementeringsförutsättningar av ett ICT-program." Thesis, KTH, Byggteknik och design, 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-125608.

Full text
Abstract:
The construction industry suffers, due it´s dynamic work environment and intricate operations, from difficult information and communication problems. To solve these problems Veidekke incorporates the use of virtual design and construction (VDC) in its projects. VDC is a project method that applies the use of several different information and communication technologies and has proven to be profitable during the design phase. The use of VDC in the design phase assembles the decision-authorized parties in an interactive room where information can be shared quickly and effectively by utilizing visualization technology. VDC, however, lacks similar work processes for the construction phase of the project which still applies traditional information and communication principles. Through cooperation with Veidekke, an ICT-program was implemented in order to study its effect on the current information and communication problems. Observations and interviews were conducted in order to analyze the programs usability, user-friendliness and the conditions of implementation. The development of cloud computing services has revolutionized the possibilities to store and manage information. By utilizing the advantages of cloud services several ICT programs, such as BIM 360 Field, have been designed to address the information and communication problems of the construction industry. The programs create virtual forums wherein immense amounts of information can be stored, managed accessed by mobile units such as laptop computers, table pc and cellular phones. BIM 360 Field offers a range of different functions with high usability but should be adjusted to the Swedish construction industry in order to increase user-friendliness. In order for the program to be profitable it needs be fully implemented so that all construction parties are involved. Before new ICT can be introduced into a notoriously tech-conservative industry like construction, a well design implementation strategy needs to be established. The strategy should entail exactly which information and communication problems need to be addressed, what possibilities are available as well as how existing work processes and organizations need be conformed in order to maximize usability. The strategy should also contain an education and development plan.

Abstract:
The Information and Communications Technology (ICT) skills shortage is of national and international concern. Modern business practices require the implementation of new technologies supported by a workforce with current and diversified ICT skill-sets. Acquiring suitable ICT skills has become a difficult task and employers are seeing government intervention at all levels. The school system in South Africa is under increased pressure and is faced with continuously declining matriculation pass rates, specifically in subjects such as science and mathematics. Schools are experiencing a decline in the number of scholars (learners) enrolling for the Information Technology (IT) school curriculum. The IT curriculum at school level is being criticised; under-prepared teachers are blamed and lack of suitable facilities highlighted. Surveys conducted amongst grade 9 and grade 12 scholars in the Eastern Cape have shown that scholars are not considering careers in ICT. Teachers, career/guidance counsellors and parents contribute to scholars' career decisions and are not encouraging scholars to pursue careers in ICT. Tertiary institutions in South Africa and internationally, are experiencing a decline in student enrolments and in pass and throughput rates. Industry is holding tertiary institutions responsible for not providing the “correct” ICT graduate skill-sets and passing an insufficient number of quality ICT graduates desperately required by industry. The accreditation of computing degree programs, such as Computer Science (CS), Information Systems (IS) and Information Technology (IT), collectively referred to as CIT, offered by tertiary institutions is becoming an international requirement. The ICT industry is constantly changing and new job requirements and new career opportunities are frequently introduced. Graduates entering the ICT industry should have acquired knowledge about ICT career tracks in order to specialise and choose a suitable career path. Tertiary CIT degree programs should further be linked to specific career tracks and provide a multi-disciplined education to graduates. ii ICT graduates working in industry utilise skills obtained in under-graduate and post-graduate CIT degree programs. The ICT graduates have also obtained valuable skills working in industry, including business skills and soft skills. ICT skill surveys have identified the graduate skills gap, indicating ICT skills industry requires from graduates completing tertiary level qualifications. ICT graduates working in industry, for example indicated that programming in some cases is over-emphasised at school and tertiary level and that soft skills are ignored by tertiary institutions. An ICT Graduate Skills Classifications Framework is developed to address the graduate ICT skills gap and highlight important business skills, soft skills, technical skills and programming skills required by industry. In this thesis, an Industry ICT Value Chain Model is further developed that suggests a holistic approach to the problems experienced at all levels of ICT skills development, including government, industry, tertiary education institutions and at school level. Results from a number of research surveys conducted along the proposed Industry ICT Skills Value Chain Model indicated that problems exist at all stages in the value chain and that the problems can only be addressed involving government, industry and tertiary institutions collectively. A number of interventions is required and the support from industry is essential in achieving overall success in addressing the ICT skills shortage in South Africa. A proposed Industry ICT Skills Value Chain Model that can be utilised to address the ICT skills shortage in South Africa is presented.

Abstract:
Information Communication Technology (ICT) is in the discourse of international development, which is often considered as the key to socio- economic development in the sense that it helps tosolve social problems and increases the rate of economic growth. ICT policies are situated in thiscontext. Many international agencies advocate certain policies in order to accelerate economicgrowth and development in so-called developing countries. In 2009, Bangladesh enacted itsNational ICT Policy setting a broad vision to establish a transparent, responsive and accountablegovernment; developed skilled human resources; and to enhance social equity through anextended use of ICT. Following this vision multiple objectives have been addressed where socialequity and integrity are prioritized in the name of developing a socially equitable and integratedsociety through ICT. The research task of this work is to analyze the discourse of this strategyand to compare it to social reality. The ‘Theory of Communicative Action’ (TCA), which isbased on the four validity claims - truth, legitimacy, sincerity, and clarity - is used to demonstratehow social equity and integrity are addressed as objectives and what claims are made in theaction items with regard to these two objectives and how far such claims reflect social reality. Keywords:Information Communication Technology (ICT), National ICT Policy, Social Equity, Integrity,Communicative Action Theory, Critical Discourse Analysis, Validity Claims, ICT4D, CriticalTheory, Critical Information Systems research.

Abstract:
Electronic waste is the fastest growing waste stream today and information and communications technology (ICT) equipment make up a significant portion of all the electronics put on market. Due to the valuable, rare, and toxic material content of ICT equipment, their disposal requires proper treatment to ensure materials are recovered and harm to the surrounding environment and nearby residents is avoided. As a tool used to identify the impacts resulting from a product, life cycle assessment (LCA) requires details around the processes performed during each stage of a product’s life. LCA studies on ICT waste often assume that discarded equipment is fully recycled under formal conditions. This study investigates current ICT waste treatment practices and proposes a more reasonable end-of-life treatment scenario for use in future LCA work. The volume of ICT waste generated in each country is estimated according to reported mobile phone subscription counts, and treatment flows are investigated for the countries identified as generating the most waste in each region. National results are then aggregated to estimate regional and global end-of-life treatment scenarios. The research indicates that developed countries properly recycle the majority of the ICT waste that is collected and treated domestically; the United States is an exception as a majority of ICT waste generated there is discarded to landfills. Developing countries tend to recycle a majority of electronic waste in informal sectors where a lack of technology and limited enforcement of regulations result in harmful waste processing activities. Waste is also exported from developed countries for treatment in developing countries. The proposed global end-of-life treatment scenario is 19% of ICT waste is recycled under formal conditions, 64% is recycled using informal methods, and the remaining 17% is discarded in landfills. Due to a lack of uncertainty, there is a clear need for more research regarding the treatment of ICT waste, especially in regards to B2B waste and export flows. A sensitivity analysis to determine the overall impact these results may have when applied to an LCA study is recommended.

Pade, Caroline Ileje. "An investigation of ICT project management techniques for sustainable ICT projects in rural development." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002769.

Full text
Abstract:
Poverty alleviation by means of rural development has become a priority among developing countries. In turn, rural development may be significantly enhanced and supported by Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), the use of which is highlighted by the emerging importance of information and knowledge as key strategic resources for social and economic development. An analysis of rural case studies where ICTs have been introduced, suggests that there are a number of barriers and constraints that are faced when taking advantage of these technologies. These include access to infrastructure, limited formal education, insufficient training and capacity building, financial and political constraints, and social and cultural challenges. These challenges threaten the success and sustainability of rural ICT projects. Sustainability is key to the effectiveness of a rural ICT project; therefore it is important to understand the concept and categories associated with ICT project sustainability in rural areas. The categories of sustainability which include social and cultural, institutional, economic, political, and technological, reveal critical success factors that need to be considered in the implementation and management of rural ICT projects. The project management discipline acknowledges the importance of understanding the project’s environment, particularly environmental factors associated with rural communities. The complexity of the environment therefore implies the need for a project to be undertaken in phases comprising the project life cycle. Project management practice for rural ICT project sustainability can therefore be examined, adapting the traditional project life cycle to a rural ICT project. A Rural ICT Project Life Cycle (RICT-PLC) that is sensitive to the critical success factors of sustainability is therefore proposed. In order to further investigate the phases of the life cycle of a rural ICT project, two case study investigations are explored: the Dwesa ICT community project, and the Rhodes University Mathematics Education Project (RUMEP) (MathsNet). A multiple case study analysis confirms the practices associated with the RICT-PLC model, and identifies additional characteristics, phases and practices associated with rural ICT projects. Finally, an enhanced RICT-PLC model is developed, that sets sustainability guidelines for ICT project management in rural areas and identifies the people, environments, technologies, systems, and requirements for ICTs to support rural development activities.

Abstract:
Personalized digital healthcare and wellbeing with the use of wearable devices and accompanying mobile apps is a recently evolved phenomenon. This technology architecture has given birth to a number of actors who make a complex network and work together closely to make things work. At the early stage of this industry, little work has been done focusing on understanding these complex business relationships among the actors in the wearable health ecosystem and also critically analyzing the current nature of the industry’s growth. This thesis contributes in filling this gap. It breaks down the complexity of actors by classifying them into distinguishable components according to their roles in the ecosystem, and identifies their inter-relationships by developing a framework based on the “matters of exchange” among them. The thesis also pinpoints some upcoming challenges in the industry based on the observation made on the current nature of growth among the present actors. Analyzing the cases of the present actors using the tools developed in this thesis, it is concluded that the major challenge lies within the application development frontier of the ecosystems, which is the gateway of innovation in this industry. We have observed that the fragmented growth of ecosystems is individually benefiting the platforms, but not benefiting the innovation in app development as a whole. It is concluded that collaboration among actors in managing and utilizing health data generated from wearable devices, such as a standardization has become essential to control the consequences of this fragmented growth and to enabling a device independent app-innovation environment.

Abstract:
The challenge for educators is to prepare students for life in a technological advanced society that will continue to change exponentially. Work requirements have changed and computer skills have become a basic requirement for a majority of jobs. As computers have become more prevalent in everyday life and in the work place, their use has gained in importance around the world. Kuwait, like other countries, has recognised the need to increase the technological background of its students to compete better in world markets. This research recognises the importance of ICT in Education and realises the difficulties involved in its effective adoption. For that reason, it presents an empirical study of the ICT adoption process by examining perceived innovation attributes, and the relationship of individual characteristics in this process. The theory that supports the research effort is Rogers' theory of Diffusion of Innovation, which was used as the theoretical framework to hypothesise a model of ICT adoption. This model is called the ICT ARABIA Model (ICT Adoption using Rogers' model, and Bringing In Addition), and was designed to elicit the relative importance of the perceived innovation attributes in influencing ICT adoption in Mathematics education. The empirical context of the research is 259 participants in mathematics departments, which are analysed using quantitative and qualitative research approaches. Results indicated that the ICT ARABIA Model was most useful in explaining ICT adoption by mathematics departments. The relative importance of each factor of the ICT ARABIA Model was determined by rank ordering the mean importance scores for each factor. However, an additional factor emerged, and this was leadership. Also, demographic characteristics were found non-significant predictors of ICT adoption. These findings highlighted many issues for further study. The main concern was regarding the importance of the perceptions of innovation attributes in influencing the ICT adoption in mathematics education; however, leadership was also an influential factor, which resulted from interviews. Those interested in programme innovation and change in educational departments may need to focus on finding a strong leader to help in the process.

Abstract:
In today’s highly technological world there are devices for every occasion. That is why there is intense competition between developers who often create quite similar kinds of products. One of the multiple ways to stand out from the crowd is to have good usability in their products. By investing on usability companies can make their products better and that can improve their relationship with customers. The goal of this thesis was to find out how ICT organizations in Finland approach usability. This research was conducted by sending a survey to randomly picked Finnish ICT companies and the data was analyzed once the survey was closed. Literature review was also conducted and the results of literature review were reflected on the results of the survey. The results were very positive and most of the respondent organizations did conduct usability evaluation at least at some level. They used multiple usability evaluation methods and they did it at different stages of the product’s life cycle. These organizations seem to understand what usability is, for they all defined it within the lines of most common definitions of usability. Even organizations that do not do any usability evaluation seem to be interested in usability and might do usability evaluation in the future. Usability as concept is still very young when it is related to technology. Usability does not have one universal definition either but many have defined it in their own manner, such as International Organizations of Standardization (ISO) standard organization have their own definition for usability. The age of usability as an acknowledged concept or its definition does not matter however, because every single product which has interaction between the product and user has usability in it, whether it is good or bad. There have been multiple studies that show the benefits of investing in usability and good usability is nowadays essential in technological products. Many different kinds of usability evaluation methods have been invented during the years. They range from the most used and rather simple usability evaluation method heuristic evaluation to more complex eye-tracking evaluation methods and there are many other methods beyond those two examples. Automated usability evaluation is becoming very popular and there has been new research in recent years on the subject which is no surprised considering that automated processes are becoming more popular every day. However usability testing is still primarily done by human beings. That is why it is always important to remember that whenever there are actual users testing the system, those testers are not subjects of the test. The system and its user interface are the test subjects. There has been previous studies on this subject, including couple theses done at the department of information processing science in the university of Oulu. The results of the current study show that 87.5% of ICT organizations in Finland do usability evaluation. Previous studies have shown similar kind of results. The results of previous studies and the current study show some positive results on how seriously ICT companies take usability and they really seem to want to have good usability in their products. The purpose of this thesis is to understand what kind of approach Finnish ICT organizations have for usability, its evaluation, and how they understand usability. This study’s purpose is not to obtrude usability evaluation. In some cases usability evaluation can even do harm to the system if not used properly. Usability evaluation should not be forced upon development. If usability evaluation is considered useless and unnecessary in organization, then it should be left out. However every organization should at least evaluate their current stance on usability testing to find out whether they need to do it. The bottom line is, that usability evaluation does a lot of good for the system if it is done correctly and at the right time with right tools. Good usability can decrease costs on documentation, support, training, and in many other things. Good usability can also increase sales a lot. Many studies have confirmed this during the years and it is very likely that future studies will confirm this even more.

Tikka, A. (Annariina). "ICT support for gift giving." Bachelor's thesis, University of Oulu, 2017. http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:oulu-201704251581.

Full text
Abstract:
Gift giving has far deeper societal, sociological, and psychological implications than people are generally aware of. It can work in both positive and negative ways — building and strengthening or weakening and breaking social ties, imposing identity images on both the givers and the recipients. Gifts are also important from a consumer and marketing perspective, and tend to cause their seekers anxiety in many ways. To counter the difficulties in the gift giving process it is important to record information about important dates, recipients, given and received gifts, as well as new plans. Many tools are already being used to help keep track of gift giving, and these range from simple pen-and-paper solutions to productivity applications like note-taking tools and spreadsheets. The purpose of this thesis is to explore gift giving behaviour and make use of the Technology Acceptance Model to triangulate requirements for a gift giving support application, as well as offer a list of possible design contributions to meet each requirement. These results can then be utilised in future research to design and produce an actual gift giving support application, that will meet the needs of both gift givers and recipients.

Abstract:
The Basel II Framework ensures banks are well capitalized. It is designed to be more risk sensitive than the old Basel Capital Accord and considers operational risk, such as "the risk of loss resulting from inadequate or failed internal procesess, people and systems or from external events." Banks are forced to calculate the regulatory capital charge for operational risk and want to optimize it. IT is a substantial part of operational risk and therefore is a part of the regulatory capital charge for operational risk. The Basel Committee requires banks to implement a framework to manage operational risk. One objective of this study is to provide description of this framework, IT aspects of operational risk and IT governance under Basel II, based on available sources of information. Another objective is to design processes for assessing and managing IT and operational risks under Basel II. Last but not least objective of this study is to disclose recent credit risk data and indicators for consolidated sector and large banks in the Czech republic. The amount of the regulatory capital charge for operational risk is an important part of the overall capital charge. This work increases IT practitioner's understanding of such topics as assessing and managing operational risk under Basel II.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on innovations and ICT/IS innovations in detail. It is divided into the theoretical and practical part. The author of the thesis sets himself two main objectives. First one is to define the basic innovation and ICT/IS innovation theory. Second one is to conduct research among selected companies and analyze its results. From mined data the author tries to identify a group of companies successful in innovation projects, define best innovation practices as a key to success and analyze the ICT/IS innovations impact on the other innovation types. The thesis is divided into two parts, theoretical and practical. The theoretical part is aimed at definition of information system and its relevance to company's competitiveness. The multidimensional view of IS is also highlighted. The author describes the Schumpeter's Theory of Innovation and contributions of his followers. In addition to information system's definition this part focuses also on innovation management and innovation strategy, as well as on author's own experience with innovation projects. Final section of the theoretical part describes different types of ICT/IS innovations and their definition. The impacts of ICT/IS innovation on other types of innovation is also discussed. Second part of the thesis is practical one and deals with research which was carried out among a set of selected companies. Prior to results evaluation, The author defines several theses (as a reflection his expectation from research). These theses are grouped into following categories: effects and return of ICT/IS investment, ICT/IS innovation strategic management and the importance of ICT/IS innovation in innovation cycle. As a part of the analysis the author compare above mentioned theses to gained research results. Finally, there is the executive summary containing key recommendations and best practices for successful ICT/IS innovation activities. Main contribution of the thesis may be seen in the description of companies' approach to innovations and identification of a group of companies applying innovations successfully in practice.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the ubiquitous cloud computing trend and particularly Software as a Service. The main goal is to specify all pros and cons of this concept for its customers and also cloud providers. The global perspective is then specified to Software as a Service and deployment of SaaS ERP products. The next goal is to define an appropriate method to analyze a company's needs prior to switching to the cloud. Furthermore, recommendations as to whether the cloud is better than an on-premise version should result from the previous analysis. Another aim is to form a process for successful switch to the cloud and ensure all important aspects of using cloud services are covered. Theoretical findings and recommendations are used in a practical example of SaaS ERP deployment. To reach all goals, a theoretical analysis of all available monograph and electronic sources, covering cloud computing and consultations with experts from the company; Algotech BSC, were used. The main added value is in the dual point of view on the topic, from customer's and provider's viewpoints with a more detailed focus on ERP. The author suggests the right procedure for switching to the cloud, guidance with calculating ROI, TCO and preparing all necessary contracts and agreements.

Abstract:
The doctoral thesis deals with the evidence in accounting in terms of Information and Communication Technologies. The aim of the thesis is to gather all of the available information about the ICT in accounting, to emphasize the impacts of ICT on accounting and following draw the attention to the risks which result from the application of ICT. In order to achieve the aim the qualitative analysis and the search of the accessible information resources are used. Some parts of the thesis are demonstrated on examples. The purpose of single chapters is to discuss, according to the theoretical base defined, subsequently all phases of the life cycle of accounting documents which are presented as financial statements at the output from the accounting. Special attention is given to accounting evidence. The last part of the thesis has application nature. The use of XML in financial reporting is demonstrated there in the real existing and secured systems based on ICT. According to the analysis made I came to the conclusion that because of the requirement for the reliability of accounting the internal control system has growing importance. Regardless the technologies used there is need to preserve the evidence at the level of accounting record during all of its life cycle phases -- when it is made out or received, when it is transferred, conversed to some other form and archived. I dealt also with another important phase of the life cycle of accounting records -- with the evidential financial reporting. There I came to conclusion that key phases are following: Firstly, there is need to provide evidential linkage between bookkeeping and the statements assembled. Further it is crucial to assure secured transfer of the statements to the final storage place or publishing location of the statements. Finally it is desirable to consider trustworthy storage place for the statements and also its evidential method of publishing them on the web. It is possible to deduce from the statistics available that information and procedures described in the thesis do not correspond with the actual ordinary practice in the Czech Republic. More likely it can be seen as a sum of the knowledge which can be technically and legally used by the accounting entities. Its wider use can be expected in the following years.

Abstract:
There are many of different rankings in the world, which relate to information and communications technology. For example, United Nations e-Government survey evaluates expansion of e-government administration in 193 countries in the world every two years and publishes worldwide ranking of EGDI (e-government development index). Since 2003 web portals of the capitals of the largest countries in the world are evaluated evaluated by - Digital Governance in Municipalities Worldwide (Holzer et al., 2014) every two years. This rating is organized by the "The E-Governance Institute" which is part of Rutgers University Newark. Prague (15 in) was included for the first time in 2007. Prague was ranked in excellent 2nd place in 2009, in the period 2011 - 2012 was in 4th place and in the period 2013 - 2014, Prague ranked 10th. Our methods of evaluation are based on methods of Digital Governance in Municipalities Worldwide, which is focused on regional web portals. We evaluated 6 regional web portals using 40 parameters in the area privacy, usability, content, services, citizen and social engagement. For instance, we evaluated if web portal provides: online publications, multilingual access, GIS, calendar of events, searchable database of articles, accommodation reservation etc. For evaluation of regional web portals, we chose two regional touristic headquarters (Centrála cestovního ruchu -- Jižní Morava (www.ccrjm.cz), Jihočeská centrála cestovního ruchu www.jccr.cz)), one regional touristic web (Posázaví - vítejte v turistickém regionu kolem řeky Sázavy (www.posazavi.com)), two Austrian web portals, which represents cross-border cooperation between Austria and Czech republic (Urlaub am Bauerhof -- dovolená na selském statku (www.agroturistika-v-rakousku.cz), Rakousko -- přijeďte a ožijete (www.austria.info/cz)) and official touristic web portal of Switzerland (Officielle Website von Schweiz Tourismus (www.mojesvycarsko.com)). As it turned out during our model usage, which took into account five important areas, level of regional web portals significantly differ. Some criteria are fulfilled across the all sites, but some of them are partly or completely missing. Individual solutions therefore often prefer different criteria, thus providing different perspectives on the region and its issues. If all criteria were met, the informational content and thus even usefulness of the individual portals would rise. Theoretically, this would lead to a "content compatibility" of individual solutions, which would ultimately bring profit to users and consequently the visitors of their respective regions.
