Abstract:
We prove -consistency and asymptotic normality of a generalized semiparametric regression estimator that includes as special cases Ichimura's semiparametric least-squares estimator for single index models, and the estimator of Klein and Spady for the binary choice regression model. Two function expansions reveal a type of U-process structure in the criterion function; then new U-process maximal inequalities are applied to establish the requisite stochastic equicontinuity condition. This method of proof avoids much of the technical detail required by more traditional methods of analysis. The general framework suggests other -consistent and asymptotically normal estimators.

Abstract:
Abstract We propose an extension of the inclusive breakup model of Ichimura, Austern and Vincent [Phys. Rev. C 32, 431 (1985)] for the evaluation of incomplete fusion (ICF) cross sections in nuclear reactions induced by two-body projectiles. The main idea, adopted in other methods, consists in the separation of the participant-target optical potential into its direct reaction and compound reaction components, the latter being responsible for the ICF contribution of the total nonelastic breakup cross section. Preliminary comparison with experimental data shows encouraging results.

Abstract:
Hahn and Ridder (2013, Econometrica 81, 315–340) formulated influence functions of semiparametric three-step estimators where generated regressors are computed in the first step. This class of estimators covers several important examples for empirical analysis, such as production function estimators by Olley and Pakes (1996, Econometrica 64, 1263–1297) and propensity score matching estimators for treatment effects by Heckman, Ichimura, and Todd (1998, Review of Economic Studies 65, 261–294). The present article studies a nonparametric likelihood-based inference method for the parameters in such three-step estimation problems. In particular, we apply the general empirical likelihood theory of Bravo, Escanciano, and van Keilegom (2018, Annals of Statistics, forthcoming) to modify semiparametric moment functions to account for influences from plug-in estimates into the above important setup, and show that the resulting likelihood ratio statistic becomes asymptotically pivotal without undersmoothing in the first and second step nonparametric estimates.

Abstract:
A unique case of IgG4+ sclerosing disease was diagnosed in the sphenoid sinus, a previously unreported location, and was treated in a novel manner. This study describes the clinical presentation and management of IgG4 sclerosing disease in the paranasal sinuses. A retrospective case review and review of the medical literature were performed. A 38-year-old woman with a 2-year history of constant frontal headaches presented to our clinic. Imaging showed bony destruction of the sphenoid sinus and sellar floor. The patient underwent a right-sided sphenoidotomy with debridement and biopsy. Pathological evaluation showed a dense plasmacytic infiltrate with >150 IgG4+ cells/high-power field. She was subsequently started on a nasal corticosteroid with improved patency of the sphenoid antrostomy. We report an unusual case of a middle-aged woman who presented with IgG4-sclerosing disease (IGSD) isolated to the sphenoid sinus. Although our knowledge concerning treatment in extrapancreatic organs is lacking, there is evidence that glucocorticoid treatment improves nasal sinus opacification on CT findings (Sato Y, Ohshima K, Ichimura K, et al., Ocular adnexal IgG4-related disease has uniform clinicopathology, Pathol Int 58:465–470, 2008). This case study and literature review adds to the growing literature describing IGSD in the head and neck and more specifically isolated to the sphenoid sinus with preliminary data concerning local control with topical steroids.

Abstract:
We propose the use of neutron poisons in reactions induced by radioactive beams as a test of theoretical models aiming to relate neutron capture in nuclei with neutron surrogate reactions such as ([Formula: see text]) reactions. We exploit the approximations necessary to obtain a direct relation between the two reactions: surrogate versus neutron capture. We also show how this is intimately related to the momentum distribution of the neutron within the deuteron. The models we use are based on the theory of inclusive breakup reactions commonly employed in the treatment of incomplete fusion and surrogate method. Such theories were developed in the 1980s by Ichimura, Austern and Vincent [Phys. Rev. C 32 (1985) 431], Udagawa and Tamura [Phys. Rev. C 24 (1981) 1348] and Hussein and McVoy [Nucl. Phys. A 445 (1985) 124]. We use these theories to derive an expression for the proton yield in the reaction [Formula: see text]. The capture reaction [Formula: see text] is then extracted using reasonable approximations. By recalling an old method proposed by Serber [Phys. Rev. 80 (1950) 1098; Proc. Roy. Soc. A 208 (1951) 559] we explain how the momentum distribution of neutrons within the deuteron will depend on the short-range dependence of the nucleon–nucleon force. The relevance of our work to nucleosynthesis in the rapid neutron capture process is emphasized.

Abstract:
Myosin is a major myofibrillar component in skeletal muscles. In myofibrils, ~300 myosin molecules form a single thick filament in which there is constant turnover of myosin. Our previous study demonstrated that the myosin replacement rate is reduced by inhibition of protein synthesis (Ojima K, Ichimura E, Yasukawa Y, Wakamatsu J, Nishimura T, Am J Physiol Cell Physiol 309: C669–C679, 2015); however, additional factors influencing myosin replacement were unknown. Here, we showed that rapid myosin replacement requires heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) activity. We utilized the fluorescence recovery after photobleaching technique to measure the replacement rate of green fluorescent protein-fused myosin heavy chain (GFP-MYH) in myotubes overexpressing HSP90. Intriguingly, the myosin replacement rate was significantly increased in HSP90-overexpressing myotubes, whereas the myosin replacement rate slowed markedly in the presence of an HSP90-specific inhibitor, indicating that HSP90 activity promotes myosin replacement. To determine the mechanism of this effect, we investigated whether HSP90 activity increased the amount of myosin available for incorporation into myofibrils. Strikingly, the gene expression levels of MYHs were significantly elevated by HSP90 overexpression but downregulated by inhibition of HSP90 activity. Cytosolic myosin content was also increased in myotubes overexpressing HSP90. Taken together, our results demonstrate that HSP90 activity facilitates myosin replacement by upregulating MYH gene expression and thereby increasing cytosolic myosin content.

Abstract:
In this paper, light propagation in an isotropic photonic crystal fiber as well in a silica-glass microcapillary infiltrated with a mesogenic azobenzene dye has been investigated. It appeared that light spectrum guided inside the photonic crystal fiber infiltrated with the investigated azobenzene dye depends on the illuminating wavelength of the absorption band and on linear polarization. Also, alignment of the mesogenic azobenzene dye molecules inside silica glass microcapillaries and photonic crystal fibers has been investigated. Results obtained may lead to a new design of optically tunable photonic devices. Full Text: PDF ReferencesP. Russell. St. J. "Photonic-Crystal Fibers", J. Lightwave Technol. 24, 4729 (2006). Abstract:
Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxides with R-3m space group have gained significant attention in recent years due to their high energy density, high power capability, and long cycle life. There are several synthesis methods to obtain NMC active powders, like solid-state or sol-gel, but co-precipitation synthesis is a widely used method for preparing NMC cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries, offering advantages in terms of control over particle size, morphology, and homogeneity (Xie et al., 2016). The main difficulty of synthesizing Ni-rich materials is the minimization of the degree of Li/Ni cation mixing, which refers to the interchange of the nickel and lithium ions in the 3a/3b sites of the crystal lattice. Perfect NMC materials have a hexagonal layered structure of α-NaFeO2-type, where Li and transition metal atoms form alternating layers between oxygen layers. To minimize phenomenon of cation mixing an excess of lithium source prior to sintering is required (Arai et al., 1995). However, unreacted lithium remain on the surface of NMC after the synthesis in the form of Li2O and it turns into LiOH and Li2CO3 as impurities if stored in ambient conditions. Those residual lithium compounds (RLC) on NMC811 surface can have significant impacts on the cathode's morphology, crystal structure, surface chemistry and, thus, electrochemical performance. Despite it was previously shown that Ni-rich materials have poor charge-discharge capacity retention, related to the electrolyte oxidization at the positive electrode surface (Jung et al., 2017) and/or structural changes of the material, such as large c-axis shrinkage, at high potentials (Teichert et al., 2020), many efforts are made to synthesize Ni-rich NMC for battery applications. Our research explores the impact of lithium excess on the physicochemical properties of NMC811. We compared self-made fresh samples with commercially available NMC811 in terms of structural parameters, morphology and electrochemical performance at high C-rates before and after lithium surplus was washed. Lithium removing procedure was applied to mitigate issues with RLC during battery operation, such as electrolyte degradation and gassing (Hartmann et al., 2022). However, over-washing can change physical properties of NMC811, including surface reconstruction as a consequence of the leaching of active transition metal ions and lithium from the cathode. Therefore, it is important to carefully optimize the washing procedures to balance the removal of RLC with the preservation of the cathode's electrochemical performance and stability. Here we want to point the effectiveness of washing procedure on NMC811 morphology, structural stability and electrochemistry. Additionally, our studies addressed the effects of calendar aging of active powders, i.e. prolonged shelf-storage in an ambient conditions for washed and unwashed samples, especially an influence of LiOH and Li2CO3 on structural parameters, electrodes preparation and electrochemical behavior. We want to open the discussion about preferable strategy on storage of Ni-rich NMC The work was supported by the University of Warsaw through Action I.3.4. “The circular economy – energy storage”: "New electrode materials for next generation Li-ion batteries" (project no. Abstract:
Abstract A 42-year-old woman presented with leg ulceration on a background of antisynthetase syndrome and immunosuppression with rituximab, azathioprine and prednisolone. The initial lesion was an erythematous patch on the lower leg, which increased in size with violaceous changes. The area subsequently broke down to form an ulcer. On examination, she had a 7-cm ulcerating lesion with central necrosis. Clinically, the appearance was suspicious of pyoderma gangrenosum; biopsy demonstrated scarring without features of vasculitis, atypia or malignancy. The ulcer did not show improvement as expected after oral and topical steroid treatment, with new fleshy nodular growth. Repeat biopsy showed angiocentric atypical lymphocytes with positive Epstein–Barr virus (EBV)-encoded RNA (EBER) staining. Further incisional biopsy demonstrated large, atypical B lymphocytes with a diffuse sheet-like morphology and a poorly circumscribed base. Immunohistochemistry was positive for CD79a, CD30, CD20, MUM1, BCL6, and EBER. Overall, the findings were consistent with EBV-positive diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). The main differential diagnosis was EBV-positive mucocutaneous ulcer (MCU), another EBV-associated lymphoproliferative disorder, albeit with an indolent course (Dojcinov SD, Venkataraman G, Raffeld M et al. EBV positive mucocutaneous ulcer—a study of 26 cases associated with various sources of immunosuppression. Am J Surg Pathol 2010; 34:405–17). In this case, the diffuse sheet-like morphology and poorly circumscribed base favoured EBV-positive DLBCL. The lesion fully healed with withdrawal of immunosuppression and treatment with rituximab therapy, and involved field radiotherapy. First described in 2003, EBV-positive DLBCL is a rare, classically aggressive lymphoma initially believed to only occur in patients older than 50 years of age (Oyama T, Ichimura K, Suzuki R et al. Senile EBV+ B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders. Am J Surg Pathol 2003; 27:16–26). Since the revision of the World Health Organization classification in 2016, it is also recognized to present in younger patients, with an associated better prognosis. EBV-positive DLBCL occurs in both nodal and extranodal sites. Therefore, cutaneous presentations must complete staging investigations to rule out skin involvement secondary to a nodal lymphoma. Our patient highlights a rare complication of immunosuppression. We illustrate the relevance of considering rare causes of ulceration in patients with autoimmune conditions and immunosuppression and demonstrate the importance of considering malignancy in a nonhealing ulcer. Multiple biopsies may be needed in ulcers that poorly respond to treatment. While EBV-positive DLBCL and EBV-positive MCU can be difficult to differentiate, it is vital for prognostication.
