Abstract:
This research studies the knowledge organization systems (KOS) related to theories to build thesaurus, taxonomies, ontologies and classification systems in the literature field of Information Science. It uses the methodology of literature review and a research on the same field databases in order to investigate the bibliographic production about the theme, from 1998 up to July 2009. A bibliographic research about knowledge organization and representation is carried out, specifically related to the development of thesaurus, taxonomies, ontologies and classification systems. It identifies the same theoretical way to build KOS through the classification theory, concept theory, the relationship between the concepts and the foundation of Linguistics and Terminology. Extrinsic and intrinsic characteristics were analysed from the representative sample of the bibliographic production about KOS. The extrinsic analysis is relative to form aspects, including the publication year, authors, title, publication and keywords. The intrinsic analysis relates to content aspects through the subject analysis of the documents following the theoretical foundations. The last chapter verifies that the thesaurus and classification systems are the most quoted in the literature about KOS, being a theoretical reference to the development of these systems based on the international standards and rules. It highlights the importance of consolidating common standards to build different types of KOS in the field of Information Science and shows the need of gathering the multidisciplinary interests linked by the same goals and also getting better practices in the knowledge organization and representation.

Abstract:
Investigates theoretical and practical interfaces between terminology, philosophical ontology, computational ontology and documentary linguistics and the subsidies that they offer for the construction of documentary information. It was established as specific objectives, the analysis of the production, development, implementation and use of ontologies based on the information science theories, the research on the contribution of ontologies for the development of thesauri and vice versa and the discussion of the philosophical foundation of the application of ontologies based on the study of ontological categories present in classical philosophy and in the contemporary proposals. It argues that the understanding of ontologies through the communicative theory of terminology contributes to the organization of a less quantitative access (syntactic) and more qualitative (semantic) of information. Notes that, in spite of sharing some common goals, there is little dialogue between the information science (and, inside it, the documentary linguistics) and computer science. It argues that the computational and philosophical ontologies are not completely independent events, which have among themselves only the similarity of name, and notes that the discussion of categories and categorization in computer science, does not always have the emphasis it receives in information science in studies on knowledge representation. The approach of Deleuze and Guattari's rhizome, was treated as instigator of reflections on the validity of the hierarchical tree model structure and the possibilities of its expansion. It concludes that the construction of ontologies can not ignore the terminological and conceptual analysis, as it's understood by the terminology and by the information science accumulated in the theoretical and methodological basis for the construction of indexing languages and, on the other hand, the construction of flexible indexing languages can not ignore the representational model of ontologies which are more capable for formalization and interoperability.

Abstract:
Subject retrieval in web-based library catalogs : Master’s thesis. This thesis has been motivated by past research, problems and realizations that online library catalog users frequently perform subject searches - using keywords, subject headings and descriptors - and these searches have yielded unsatisfactory results. Web-based catalogs or WebPACs (Web-based Online Public Access Catalogs), belonging to the so-called third generation of online catalogs and providing a wide variety of search options, remain largely underutilized despite the continuous advancement of information retrieval systems. Users still encounter a number of problems, such as those related to translating their concepts to the language of the catalog's system and cross-references prepared to this purpose. Subject access in online library catalogs can be provided through different access points. To that purpose natural and controlled indexing and retrieval languages are used, and each among them has its advantages and downsides. Natural language indexing is performed by the computer, in which process words from defined fields are automatically extracted. Controlled indexing languages are those in which selection of terms to be assigned to documents is manually performed. These are, for example, classification systems, subject heading languages and thesauri. During the 1970s, a consensus was reached that the best retrieval results are gained when using both types of indexing languages simultaneously. Apart from indexing languages, it is necessary to take into account user search behavior; and while designing user interface one has to allow for the users' skills and knowledge - ensuring instruction, help and feedback information at every step of the retrieval process. The aim of the research was to determine the variety and quality of subject access to information in WebPACs of British university libraries, including searching by words or classification marks, natural and controlled languages, browsing options, and forming simple and complex queries in order to conclude about existing advancements, offered models and employed methods and compare them to WebPACs of Croatian university libraries.

Abstract:
After a methodological foreword to the sources'acquisition, the author describes the history of the National Library of Medecine (NLM), whose aim was (and is) to gather, to classify and to publish biomedical bibliographical references through the information technologies which have been developing since 1818 till nowadays from hardcopy into MEDLINE via Internet. The author explains the concept of MeSH (Medical Subject Heading) and describes the structure of the Thesaurus MeSH: a vocabulary containing all the subjects which are used for the articles'indexing. The MeSH Browser has got all the MeSH describers which are in the hardcopy of the Medical Subject Heading, with the relative notes and the abbreviations of the corresponding subheadings: that is a classification of subheadings representing a particular aspect of the describer to which they refer. Finally, the author describes how the MEDLINE and PubMed work: the former is available through the electronic subscription to CSA (Cambridge Scientific Abstract), the latter is free and available on the NLM website. Through the several search options (free search, advanced search with boolean operators, field search or subject search etc...) one can find the selected bibliographical references in the above mentioned databases, which provide abstracts of articles and sometimes the possibility of reading the articles in full text, thanks to the link to the journals' websites.

Abstract:
The present work provides a general view on the state-of-the-art of the studies referring to the new boundaries of subject indexing, paying special attention to the international projects about interoperability among knowledge organization systems and to the evolution of guidelines for monolingual and multilingual thesauri construction. Starting from the setting up of the prototype of an interdisciplinary thesaurus in progress at the Biblioteca nazionale centrale, Florence, within the project of the renovation of the Italian subject headings repertoire (Soggettario per i cataloghi delle biblioteche italiane), a sample of terms referring to music to be structured was analyzed. Moreover, the subject we were dealing with made it possible to start a comparison with the work performed by the Music Thesaurus Project Working Group of the Music Library Association, USA, based on the LCSH music subject headings. Finally, we tried to set up a mapping between the music subject headings included in the thesaurus prototype, the corresponding verbal headings of the DDC21, in the Italian as well in the English edition, and the LCSH entries.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to provide a concise survey of current developments within German-speaking terminology work in the domain of knowledge organisation and an analysis of and comparison between two recently re-edited printed publications and the Wikipedia portal devoted to this subject. In the first part, key concepts are defined and located within the subject matter and a theoretical framework is provided. In the second part, the field 'thesaurus' is singled out in order to exemplify terminology work. A catalogue of criteria in both form and content is developed in order to analyse and compare entries related to this field, permitting conclusions in terms of the different treatment of the field in the abovementioned publications. In doing so, various aspects of terminology work are taken into account: Firstly, the methodical level dealing with models and processes applied, secondly, the organisational level scrutinising the ways terminology is produced and thirdly, the functional level dealing with the outcomes. In the second part, special emphasis is put on this latter aspect, by analysing and comparing entries pertinent to the field in terms of macrostructure, microstructure, and mediostructure. Furthermore, consistency of definitions is looked into. The comparative part of the thesis demonstrates differences between the publications by applying the catalogue of criteria to the treatment of ‘thesaurus’. These differences are ascribed to constitutive factors of each publication, such as methods of production (non-collaborative vs. collaborative) or the anticipated user (expert vs. non-expert).

Abstract:
This work presents the suggestion of a Music Microthesaurus, MiMu, with terms based in articles found in the Teclado & Áudio magazine and in references from the Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, aiming the specialization of music-related subject representations, therefore seeking better indexing and retrieval of desired information. It also features a literature review concerning aspects of music-related documentation, emphasizing the librarian’s role in that process and issues related to the retrieval of information taking into account the various supports of music documents. The review includes a referential approach to the main themes of documentary languages, analyzing natural and controlled languages, schemes of documentary classifications, exemplifying of some that are used in music, and concept theory and terminology. It presents definitions and functions of thesauruses, given the origins of terms and their applications, exemplifying the collection of terms, the categorization and the process of relationships, as well as the thesaurus’ presentation and considerations about the applicability of specific software. In the methodology, the main orientations, steps and examples adopted in the making and structuring of the MiMu, as well as a research done as a pre-test, consisting of the creation of an article index by librarians, using samples of the Teclado & Áudio magazine and the final report from the thesaurus as an assistance to the task. It presents appendixes containing a report concerning the collection of terms, forms, a table and a frame comprising a research overview and the MiMu’s report in alphabetic order. Its considerations include drawbacks to this work’s planning, such as the absence of the indexing subject in the literature review and the need for deep researches in music-related Library Science works. MiMu is considered an important contribution to the subject in focus, though it needs to be reviewed by a diversified group of researchers, by projects of divulgation and expansion, so that it potentially becomes a specialized music thesaurus, as a whole.

Abstract:
This interdisciplinary research describes the theoretical and methodological foundations of content analysis of pictorial portraits, considering them as artistic texts whose visual and iconic discourse -with its properties, attributes, relationships, reference levels and representation systems- can be analyzed and verbalized through documentary representations in information systems. It proposes a theoretical model of content analysis that identifies and analyzes the production, use and reception contexts of the pictorial portraits. Later on it develops an applied methodology, specifically documentary that allows, the writing of summaries and controlled describers as the systematizing of the required sources of information. Finally it formulates an algorithm of analysis that works as standardized procedure and methodological norm. This algorithm systematizes the subject analysis and the documentary representation and sequences the levels of the later retrieval. It is a normalized format that structures the information in areas and later on in fields, each one of them picks up, as inventory, the relationships and the attributes. The theoretical pattern and the analysis methodology have been applied on a representative sample of 80 portraits painted by F. de Goya, between 1783 and 1828.

Abstract:
Application Linked Open Data principles to the subject headings of the Polytechnic University of Madrid Library. This project is included in the procedures established for the management and publication of value vocabularies of libraries in the data Web using Linked Data technologies. The main objective is to establish useful processes for the migration of traditional documentary languages to vocabularies in digital format, defined for a free reuse of content and in combination with other vocabularies in a context of interoperability and promotion of multilingualism. The aim is to take advantage of the descriptive richness that these vocabularies offer as a whole, which is very necessary for the description and organization of digital knowledge. To achieve this, a migration is made from lists of subject headings to thesauri in their most innovative expression, as instruments of conceptual organization and platforms for the interoperability of vocabularies, following the normative guidelines of ISO 25964 1 and 2 and trying not to lose nature characteristic of the subject vocabularies of the Library of the Polytechnic University of Madrid. Linked Data has been the instrument that has allowed to obtain the expected results. Its technologies have supported the needs of semantic expression of the vocabulary by converting it into an interoperable product suitable for automatic processing by semantic applications. The addition of open licenses also places it in the category of linked and open data, which means opening the doors to its free reuse. The method of approaching the theme of the project has been to contextualize more and more specific areas of information, helping the understanding and achievement of the main objective of this work in a progressive approach to the techniques that have facilitated their development and have concluded their publication. The follow-up of the whole process has clearly demonstrated two basic consequences: that it is possible to align library products with technologies of semantic description, even with scarce resources for this, and that the implementation of projects of this nature requires the formation of groups of multidisciplinary work if you want to achieve minimum levels of quality.

Abstract:
The elaboration of an ontology on the subject of typhus in Mexico, 1904-1977, arises from the need for knowledge representation systems that allow the organization of information taking into account data of the document content and, therefore, allow its recovery considering these data as access points. The current information organization systems implemented in traditional libraries are very general and are adequate to the structure of a current scientific publication, taking into account the most common data, such as title, author (mention of responsibility), date of publication, etc. However, historical information systems require a more specialized treatment of the information and, in the absence of a generalized structure of the scientific text, they need to consider other data to form a genealogy of the formation of the scientific discourse, as is the case of the Historical Atlas of Mexican Science.

Under the supervision of Giovanni Bergamin, Mauro Guerrini and Chiara Storti, the thesis aims to test the potentialities of using the software and the data model of Wikibase for the publication of bibliographic data as LOD, to provide them with the interoperability that MARC formats do not support. As case study we have selected a limited number of UNIMARC elements and a sample of records from the OPAC of the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze. We have operated a syntactical restructuring of each UNIMARC element (in agreement with Giovanni Bergamin, Cristian Bacchi, New ways of creating and sharing bibliographic information: an experiment of using the Wikibase data model for UNIMARC data, «JLIS.it», vol. 9, n. 3, 2018) and a mapping of them with many other ontologies (RDA, BIBFRAME, Dublin Core and Schema.org). The goal is to evaluate the impact of this transformation of bibliographic data in order to optimize their visibility on the semantic web.

Abstract:
Automatic classification of text documents refers to the computerized allocation of class numbers from existing classification schemes to natural language texts by means of suitable algorithms. Based upon a comprehensive literature review, this thesis establishes an informed and up-to-date view of the applicability of automatic classification for the subject approach to electronic documents, particularly to Web resources. Both methodological aspects and the experiences drawn from relevant projects and applications are covered. Concerning methodology, the present state-of-the-art comprises a number of statistical approaches that rely on machine learning; these methods use pre-classified example documents for establishing a model - the "classifier" - which is then used for classifying new documents. However, the four large-scale projects conducted in the 1990s by the Universities of Lund, Wolverhampton and Oldenburg, and by OCLC (Dublin, OH), still used rather simple and more traditional methodological approaches. These projects are described and analyzed in detail. As they made use of traditional library classifications their results are significant for LIS, even if no permanent quality services have resulted from these endeavours. The analysis of other relevant applications and projects reveals a number of attempts to use automatic classification for document processing in the fields of patent and media documentation. Here, semi-automatic solutions that support human classifiers are preferred, due to the yet unsatisfactory classification results obtained by fully automated systems. Other interesting implementations include Web portals, search engines and (commercial) information services, whereas only little interest has been shown in the automatic classification of books and bibliographic records. In the concluding part of the study the author discusses the most significant applications and projects, and also addresses several problems and issues in the context of automatic classification.

Objective: Evaluate the different search tools with free access related to health sciences: PubMed (MeSH and free text), Google Scholar and Scirus. Method: Bibliometric analysis of scientific production recovered in the different selected search tools. The data were obtained by applying to each of them, a simple search equation (using the descriptor nursing care) and a compound according to the scheme: Population (neoplasms), Intervention (nutritional status), Outcome (quality of life). To calculate the test sample, the estimation of population parameters in infinite population was performed (expected value 0,5, precision 0,05, confidence level 0,95), performing the selection by simple random sample without replacement. Results: 1175 references were studied: 124 PubMed (MeSH); 386 Google Scholar, 386 Scirus and 279 PubMed (text-free). Of these, 904 were articles published in 350 journals, presenting 20 or more references: Supportive Care in Cancer 36 (3,98%; CI95% 2,71-5,26), Clinical Nutrition 32 (3,54%; CI95% 2,34-4,47) and Nutrición Hospitalaria 20 (2,21%; CI95% 1,25-3,17), with significant differences between PubMed (MeSH) and Google Scholar and Scirus (p <0,01 in both cases). Dispersion of literature (Bradford Law): core (1st tertile), 23 journals (6,57%; CI95% 3,98-9,17) with 302 articles (33,41%; CI95% 30,33-36,48).Statistics related to the Impact Factor of the core: mean 4,522 ± 4,014 and maximum 18,372 (Journal of Clinical Oncology). Mean age of documents 8,17 ± 6,54 (CI95% 7,79-8,55), median 6 years (Burton Kleber Index), Maximum 34 years and Price Index 42,84%.Only differences were observed between Google Scholar and PubMed (free text). Access to full text in 1001 cases (86,07%; CI95% 84,08-88,06) in 474 cases (40,76%; CI95% 37,93-43,58) for free. Overall, and in each of the search engines, there is upward trend in the number of publications (1978-2012), in line with a model of exponential curve (R=0,93 and R2=0,86). The studied thematic continues in force according to the currently indicators. The most referenced journals matching with high Impact publications on nutritional sciences and oncology, showing exponential growth and broad access to full text, highlighting the presence of an Iberoamerican journal (Nutrición Hospitalaria) with an international focus. So, PubMed is still the best option for relevant clinical searches. Google Scholar is the best tool for fast searches of full text articles and Scirus is only valid if you have a ScienceDirect subscription.

Abstract:
Classifying the communication domain according to the theory of integrative levels. In order to organize a collection of web articles in the domain of communication studies, some knowledge organization systems have been considered, including folksonomies, the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC), the Bliss Bibliographic Classification 2nd edition (BC2), and the Broad System of Ordering (BSO). Special attention is paid to the Integrative Level Classification (ILC), a system under development allowing an interdisciplinary approach to information. This seems especially suitable for the domain of communication, where several levels of reality are involved at the same time, like those of signals, societies, organizations, cultures, and recorded knowledge. The theory of levels of reality as developed by James Feibleman, Nicolai Hartmann and others, and applied to classification by the Classification Research Group, is illustrated. Tentative ILC notation for a sample of articles dealing with mass communication is constructed and discussed.
