Abstract:
In the present work, a theoretical study of the 13C + d system is carried out in the framework of the R-Matrix model. The experimental data used were taken from the IBANDL library. The cross-section measurements for the reactions have been carried out in the energy range of 0.49-1.65 MeV for three backscattering angles of 135°, 150° and 165°. The R-Matrix calculations were performed with the use of the AZURE2 code and involved the simultaneous analysis of the 13C (d, p0)14C, 13C (d, t0)12C 13C (d, a0)11B, 13C(d,a1)11B reaction channels with one, coherent set of parameters.

Abstract:
We report on the absolute differential cross section for proton elastic scattering on aluminum in the energy range of 0.8 MeV to 2.1 MeV. In the literature we have found previously published data that follow similar trends but are not consistent with one another. The present measurements also fall within that range, moreover, covering angular regions where there were no reported data, improving databases such as IBANDL. Different methods for the optical model calculations are shown where angular distributions at backward angles are in good agreement, allowing one to fix the optical potential parameters. The calculation results, as well as their data fit, differ significantly as one would expect for the energy range covered in this work, where the nuclear part of the interaction contribution is almost zero. Our data, as well as previous reports, suggest an increase with higher energies for the value of the elastic cross section at backward angles. Further work is required from both experimental and theoretical fronts.

Abstract:
The benchmarking experimental procedure in IBA (Ion Beam Analysis) is carefully designed in order to validate evaluated and experimental differential cross–section datasets of charged particles via the acquisition of EBS and NRA spectra from thick targets of known composition, followed by their simulations. In the present work, such benchmarking measurements have been performed at the laboratory of the Institute for Nuclear and Particle Physics “Demokritos”, for the elastic scattering of protons on natSi in the energy range of 1.1 – 3.5 MeV at four backward angles, at 140o, 150o, 160o and 170o. In addition, measurements were performed for the elastic scattering of deuterons on 16O in the energy range of 1.1 – 1.7 MeV at four backward angles, at 140o, 150o, 165o and 170o. More specifically, a thick non–polished Si target with Au evaporated on top and a Nb2O5 tablet were used. The spectra acquired were compared with simulated ones using the SIMNRA program along with the evaluated differential cross-section datasets from IBANDL. All the experimental parameters were thoroughly investigated. The obtained results, the observed discrepancies and the encountered problems during the benchmarking process are discussed and analyzed.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Ngajat is a traditional dance which synonym with the ethnic of Iban in Sarawak. This dance is usually performed in festive such as the Gawai Dayak and matrimony. The purpose of the dance is to entertain and showing gratitude for the attended guest. In Iban’s culture, the Ngajat dance can be divided in two categories by referring to gender, which are Ngajat Indu (Female’s dance) and Ngajat Laki (Male’s dance). Other than that, the Ngajat dance have significant meaning and scared in the Iban’s culture depending on the ritual performed by the ethnic itself. Therefore, this is an ethnography study emphasized on the intangible culture of the Iban’s Ngajat. This study applied the qualitative method of exploratory research and exploring a concept of phenomena through conducting field work and interview with an expert in the Iban’s culture. The studies sites are located in Betong and Sri Aman which have the largest Iban’s settlement in Sarawak. The studies find the Ngajat dance still widely practised and there is an effort to conserve the traditional dance to prevent it from extinction.

Abstract:
The Sea Dayaks, better known as the Ibans, inhabit nearly the whole of Sarawak. The Ibans belong to the Proto-Malay groups and historically, they were from the Kapuas Valley in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. They migrated to Sarawak about fifteen generations ago in the mid 16th century (the 1630s). They went to the state through the Kumpang Valley and inhabit Batang Ai and then split to several places in Sarawak (Morgan, 1968). Although the Ibans have a social status in their traditional belief, they do not have a hierarchy of social status such as the Orang Ulu. However, they have elevated the status so-called Pengulu, Tuai Rumah, Tuai Burung, Lemambang, Manang, Beliau, Tukang Sabak, dan Indu Takar. The era of modernization has led to changes to the knowledge of the young generation, especially the younger generation of the Ibans who lack knowledge about the function and role of each rank status in their communities. Therefore, this study was conducted qualitatively through an interview with expert informants, observation, and documentation. This research was hoped to contribute to the general knowledge of the Iban community and other communities in the preservation of the function and role of each social status in the Iban community.

Abstract:
The overall objective of this thesis is to contribute experimentally determined and evaluated cross sections to a differential cross-section database for Ion Beam Analysis (IBA) that contains accurate and reliable data freely available to the user community, such as the Ion Beam Analysis Nuclear Data Library (IBANDL) database (https://www-nds. iaea.org/exfor/ibandl.htm) [1]. In the first part of the present thesis, we determined differential cross-sections of the reactions 27Al(d, p&α) and benchmarked them with thick target spectra derived from pure aluminum in two independent laboratories. The differential cross section of 27Al(d, p&α) reactions was determined between 1.4 MeV and 2 MeV at scattering angles of 165◦, 150◦, and 135◦ in the VDGT laboratory in Tehran (Iran), as well as measuring them again, including target preparation, at a scattering angle of 150° with independent equipment at INSP in Paris (France). We found close agreement between these two experimental measurements in two different laboratories at 150°. There is no nuclear reaction model that can be adjusted to represent these cross sections since the compound nucleus has a level structure that cannot be treated with current models. We proposed a fitted Fourier series function to represent the evaluated data to define the Al-cross sections. The evaluated differential cross sections have been benchmarked and validated using thick target charged particle spectra obtained using incident deuteron beams of energies between 1.6 MeV and 2 MeV at both laboratories. The validation was performed by fitting deuteroninduced particle spectra obtained from a high purity bulk Al target with SIMNRA, and the thick target spectra are reproduced, allowing the recommendation of the use of these cross sections for NRA. In the second part of the present thesis, the elastic proton scattering cross sections on 17O were measured for the first time at the SAFIR platform at INSP in Paris. Thin films of 17O were prepared by thermal oxidation of Si at 1100 ◦C under 17O2. The physical thickness of the silica was determined by ellipsometry and the atomic thickness by RBS with an uncertainty of 3%. The small quantities of 18O and 16O, present as impurities in the highly enriched 17O2 gas used to grow these films, were determined by the established NRA techniques using the 18O(p, α)15N and 16O(d, p1)17O nuclear reactions. We determined the yield of elastically scattered protons using the corresponding peak in the Elastic Backscattering (EBS) spectra; however, this peak sits on the large continuiiious signal from the silicon substrate. The Si signal was significantly suppressed by aligning the incident beam with the < 100 > axis of the single crystal silicon by ion channeling. The solid angle of the detector, placed at a scattering angle of 165◦, was determined by elastic scattering measurements of 2 MeV alpha particles on a reference sample of Bi implanted in Si. The measured 17O(p, p) cross section, with a systematic uncertainty of about 14%, consists of several resonant structures superimposed on a smoothly varying component increasing ranging from about 1.2 times the Rutherford cross section at 600 keV to about 3 times Rutherford at 2 MeV. A resonance at 1230 keV shows promise for EBS depth profiling, especially at large backscattering angles

Abstract:
This study proposes to establish the influence of the French Naturalist writer Emile Zola in four of the Valencian novels of the Spanish writer Vicente Blasco Ibanez. In order to achieve the stated goal, an extensive outline of the salient characteristics of Zola's Naturalism in the four works of the Spanish author has been formulated. The outline is followed for each chapter, illustrating the ever-increasing influence of Zola in subsequent works in the series. The four Valencian novels analyzed in this study exemplify the characteristics of Zolian Naturalism presented in the outline, among them expressionist and impressionist description, the battle between many protagonists and their environment and the problems presented by the historical moment in which they live, the materialist/determinist vision of life, and the symbolic significance of the characters and settings, just to list a few. The four novels studied in this dissertation are Arroz y tartana, Flor de mayo, La barraca and Canas y barro. A comparative/historical approach is used in order to observe the characteristic style of Emie Zola as seen in several of his novels, among them L'Assommoir and Germinal.

Abstract:
Supplies of potable water from traditional sources have been increasingly depleted due to increasing world population and per capita water use. In South Africa fresh water is a vital, but scarce resource, distributed unevenly in time (frequent droughts alternate with periods of good rainfall) and space (the eastern half of the country is markedly wetter than the western half). Increasing demand for water, and decreased water quality, make careful water management a priority. Water use in South Africa is dominated by irrigation, which accounts for around 60 per cent of all water used in the country. Domestic and urban use accounts for about 30 per cent, while mining, large industries and power generation account for some 7 per cent. Commercial forestry plantations account for a little less than 4 per cent of total use by reducing runoff into rivers and streams (DWAF). Desalination of sea water is a promising technology available for the provision of fresh water to the arid regions of South Africa. However, as the technology develops, there is a need for the adequate customization of its technological processes to suite particular geographical regions. This research work is focused on the determination of an adequate desalination process by the use of a decision tree. The research will explore in qualitative format, the different types of desalination processes available, their pros and cons as well as discuss the factors affecting the selection of desalination processes.

Abstract:
AbstractThere are an estimated 14,000 to 20,000 Iban living in Brunei Darussalam, most of them in the Belait and Temburong districts. They migrated to Brunei from Sarawak just before the Second World War in search of new land and an opportunity to improve their livelihoods. Not recognised as one of the seven indigenous ethnic groups (puak) by the state, the common narrative is that they face challenges of incorporation into the sultanate. In the Sukang subdistrict in Belait, there are eight Iban longhouses. This case study of the Iban of the Melilas longhouse documents how one particular community has successfully negotiated and managed their acceptance as full citizens of Brunei while retaining their Iban identity.

Full text
Abstract:
Most conventionally-deposited optical thin films have columnar microstructure since they are deposited under a thermal nonequilibrium condition. The columnar microstructure evokes many undesirable optical effects, such as lower packing density and refractive index, vacuum-to-air spectral shift of optical spectrum, and anisotropy in index. Ion beam assisted deposition(IBAD) has been used widely as a technique to produce denser films than conventional films. It is known that zirconia films have negative inhomogeneity in refractive index as they grow and the optical inhomogeneity was related to the crystalline inhomogeneity[1]. It suggests that the columnar microstructure may be contracting as the thickness increases from the substrate[2]. It is reported that IBAD produces denser ZrO2 films than conventional films and induces crystallization of ZrO2 films into cubic phase at room temperature[3]. However, the relationship between inhomogeneity and microstructure of IBAD ZrO2 films has not been studied much. The purpose of this paper is to study the effects of Ar ion bombardment on the the inhomogeneity and microstructure of ZrO2 films and their optical and mechanical properties are presented in terms of normalized ion momentum.
