The textbook contains a structured presentation of the Conceptual Framework for the presentation of financial statements, IFRS (IAS) 16 "Fixed Assets", IFRS (IAS) 2 "Inventories", IFRS (IAS) 40 "Investment Property", IFRS (IAS) 38 "Intangible Assets", IFRS (IFRS) 5 "Non-current Assets held for Sale and Discontinued operations". Fragments of information disclosure in financial statements in accordance with IFRS of more than 50 Russian and foreign companies are given. The choice of financial statements of companies is solely a subjective judgment of the textbook authors, is aimed at explaining certain provisions of IFRS and is not an advertisement or popularization of individual business entities. In the text of the textbook, examples are divided into examples - practice of application; examples - professional judgment; examples-explanations; examples - disclosure of information. At the end of each paragraph, self-examination questions and tests are presented, which help to structure theoretical knowledge and pay attention to the most significant information blocks of IFRS. Meets the requirements of the federal state educational standards of higher education of the latest generation. Abstract:
The need for reform in Italian Public Administration is a fact that no longer calls for justification: the increasing divergence between expectations and performance in the public sector appears to expand in inverse proportion to the success rate of the attempts at reform that have successively been made since the 1990s. Taking this reflection as its cue, the book offers the results of a study inspired by the Tuscan regional law 40/2009, exploring the results and prospects of the process of administrative and regulatory simplification, at both national and regional level. The chosen key, which is crucially interdisciplinary, for the very first time probes the profound meshing of legal and economic aspects, offering elements not only of analysis but also of practical application.

Westerlund, Tina, Camilla Groth, and Gunnar Almevik, eds. Craft Sciences. Acta Universitatis Gothoburgensis, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.21524/kriterium.40.

Full text
Abstract:
The field of ‘Craft Sciences’ refers to research conducted across and within different craft subjects and academic contexts. This anthology aims to expose the breadth of topics, source material, methods, perspectives, and results that reside in this field, and to explore what unites the research in such diverse contexts as, for example, the arts, conservation, or vocational craft education. The common thread between each of the chapters in the present book is the augmented attention given to methods—the craft research methods—and to the relationship between the field of inquiry and the field of practice. A common feature is that practice plays an instrumental role in the research found within the chapters, and that the researchers in this publication are also practitioners. The authors are researchers but they are also potters, waiters, carpenters, gardeners, textile artists, boat builders, smiths, building conservators, painting restorers, furniture designers, illustrators, and media designers. The researchers contribute from different research fields, like craft education, meal sciences, and conservation crafts, and from particular craft subjects, like boat-building and weaving. The main contribution of this book is that it collects together a number of related case studies and presents a reflection on concepts, perspectives, and methods in the general fields of craft research from the point of view of craft practitioners. It adds to the existing academic discussion of crafts through its wider acknowledgement of craftsmanship and extends its borders and its discourse outside the arts and crafts context. This book provides a platform from which to develop context-appropriate research strategies and to associate with the Craft Sciences beyond the borders of faculties and disciplines.

Hartung, Colleen, ed. Claiming Notability for Women Activists in Religion. American Theological Library Association, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.31046/atlaopenpress.40.

Full text
Abstract:
This volume includes 10 biographies about the life and work of women activists, noteworthy in their particular religious or spiritual contexts yet not identified as notable, or at least not notable enough to have a biographical article on Wikipedia. It also includes a theoretical chapter rethinking the concept of notability in relation to the quality and character of what is covered in these biographies. Each biographical chapter makes the case for its subject's notability. The work of these women as founders and leaders in the "great man" tradition is amplified and made visable, but their work as coalition buiders, collaborators, mentors, facilitators of resistance movements and more, is also held up as an essential part of their notable character. Collectively, the chapters in this volume work to leverage the concept of notability in ways that challenge and extend our understanding of this concept. This work provides useful, critical engagement with the concept of notability as an important aspect of biographical writing in general and of Wikipedia standards in particular for people who write biographies about women and the librarians who help them. This engagement is needed if we are to move the dial on gender bias around the biographical coverage of women generally and on Wikipedia in particular.

Suganami, Hidemi, Madeline Carr, and Adam Humphreys, eds. The Anarchical Society at 40. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198779605.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Hedley Bull’s The Anarchical Society was published in 1977. Though considered as one of the classics in International Relations, it does not address many world political issues that concern us deeply today—volatile great power relations after the end of the Cold War, the rise of terrorism, financial crises, climate change, the impact of the Internet, deep-rooted racial inequalities, violence against women. Moreover, through the evolution of International Relations as an academic pursuit, various limitations of the type of approach followed by Bull are coming to light. Against this background, eighteen contributors to this collection, with diverse intellectual orientations and academic specializations, have revisited Bull’s book forty years on to assess its limitations and resilience. A number of contributors point to certain fundamental problems stemming from Bull’s a historical conceptual theorizing. However, several others find arguments and insights developed or hidden in his text which are still relevant, in some cases, highly so, to understanding contemporary world politics while others explore ways of augmenting Bull’s intellectual repertoire. An intricate tapestry of ideas emerges from the criss-crossing contributions to the volume and, through this, it becomes clear that there is more to The Anarchical Society than the ‘international society’ perspective with which it is conventionally associated. The contemporary relevance of Bull’s work is clearest when we recognize the flexibility of his conceptual framework and, in particular, the often overlooked potential of his concept of the ‘world political system’ of which, Bull acknowledges, modern international society is only a part.

Abstract:
A text can be read critically to uncover assumptions and judgements setting a broad limit to what its author can coherently present as its main thesis. But it is also possible to identify spaces in the text’s architecture to manoeuvre it out of its apparent encasement. The Anarchical Society, now at 40, requires, and enables, both these kinds of engagement because of its relatively narrow basis and focus and its aging effects, combined with Bull’s well-known tendency to carefully qualify everything he asserts. There may be more we can read into or out of his book than its central focus, the ‘international society’ perspective. The contributors to this collection, from a variety of backgrounds in their intellectual orientations, academic specializations, and educational, professional, and other life experiences, collectively exhibit wide-ranging ways in which Bull’s text can be approached, as outlined in this introductory essay.

Abstract:
This chapter demonstrates that 14:1-4a shows an uncanny resemblance to chs 40-55 both in style and in the pattern of thought. Since there is no compelling reason to date the two lengthy poems (at least their main bodies) for which 14:1-4a currently serves as a bridge-text in the post-exilic period, it seems natural to adopt the view that 14:1-4a was written in the late-exilic period by the same circle of writers who wrote chs 40-55. The main function 14:1-2 was designed to serve in its immediate literary setting was to interpret the imminent fall of Babylon in light of the divine will to restore and establish Zion as a place where the people of Israel return to and where the nations come to join and attach themselves to YHWH’s people – one of the core arguments of chs 40-55.

Abstract:
Throughout history, symptoms of nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea, bloating, and pain have been described in relation to diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. Gastrointestinal disorders that give rise to these symptoms are broadly characterized as one of two types: structural or functional. Although structural diseases can be easily identified, and even cured by means of medical or surgical intervention, functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) remain a medical enigma. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) constitutes one of the 40 or so conditions under the FGIDs umbrella. It is characterized by abdominal pain and altered bowel habits and has an estimated prevalence of 5%–20% in the Western world. Around 40 years ago, little was known about the mechanism behind visceral pain in IBS. Ritchie’s landmark study was one of the first to begin to elucidate some of the mechanisms involved (and therefore provide some insight into putative treatments) in the difficult area of FGIDs.

The Eurozone has been in the midst of a financial crisis since the extent of Greece's sovereign debt problems became public in 2009. This chapter examines the consequences if a Member State found itself compelled to withdraw from the Eurozone as a result of its difficulties. It begins with some general remarks about the applicable treaty provisions and the framework for a Eurozone withdrawal. It then analyses the consequences if Greece withdrew from the Eurozone with the consent of the other Member States; or if Greece withdrew from the zone on a unilateral basis. It also considers essential measures aimed at protecting the national economy and the banking system, including the imposition of exchange controls.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the scholarship and practice surrounding international law and development. As a field, law and development might be understood as theoretical in its essence: it revolves around the rise, diffusion, transformation, and disintegration of ideas, theories, concepts, and paradigms concerning law and social change. Political agendas, institutional constraints, as well as economic interests are all crucial to understanding the manner in which the law and development agenda has evolved. Development policy and practice have been crucially important to the generation of global governance norms. Law and development has become at once a source and repository of norms about the forms and functions of law, domestic as well as international, and a powerful counterweight to other sources of law in the international order.

Breast cancer is the commonest female cancer, with a lifetime risk of approximately 1 in 9. There are approximately 40 000 new cases and 11 000 deaths from the disease in England and Wales each year. Breast cancer is an adenocarcinoma which arises from the glandular tissue of the breast. Its etiology is complex, with hormonal, genetic, and modifiable lifestyle factors all involved in developing the disease. Prognosis is related to the anatomical extent of the cancer, and other factors. This chapter discusses the definition and etiology of breast cancer, as well as its typical symptoms, less common symptoms, demographics, natural history, complications, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis.

Abstract:
A number of nutritional causes of peripheral neuropathy have been identified. Patients who have gastrointestinal disease or who have undergone bariatric surgery are at risk, although frequently the specific cause is not ascertained. Vitamin B12 and thiamine deficiencies are the most common causes in bariatric surgery patients. The classic clinical picture of Vitamin B12 deficiency is a myelopathy with a concomitant peripheral neuropathy. Thiamine deficiency is the classic triad of mental status changes, opthalmoplegia, and ataxia. Copper deficiency is often unrecognized. Its presentation can be similar to Vitamin B12 deficiency. It is important that bariatric surgery patients receive continual follow up of their nutritional status and adherence to vitamin supplementation. Alcohol may cause a peripheral neuropathy through nutritional deficiency or perhaps direct toxic effects. Other deficiency states are discussed.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint condition worldwide. It can impair mobility and result in significant disability, need for total joint replacement, and healthcare utilization. OA is unusual in those younger than 40 years, then commonly the result of an underlying metabolic disorder or a prior joint injury. Some geographic and racial/ethnic variation exists in the prevalence and incidence of OA for specific joints, likely due to variation in genetics, anatomy, and environmental exposures. Many OA outcomes vary by socioeconomic status and other social factors. This chapter describes demographic and social determinants of knee, hip, and hand OA, including how these factors impact radiographic and symptomatic OA, OA-related pain and function, and its treatment.

While Zionist ideology has long been part of the rubric of Jewish history, the study of its realization through the social, cultural, and political history of the Yishuv and Israel has been relatively neglected. The Jews of Eretz Israel (‘the Land of Israel’) numbered less than half of 1% of world Jewry at the beginning of the twentieth century. Israel now accounts for about 40% and is approaching parity with the United States. Israeli history and society has only recently become a discrete topic or field of study within the humanities and social sciences, and included in university curricula, even in Israel. Change began in Israel in the early 1990s, when various collections of courses under the title of ‘Israel Studies’ were organized as a modest subset within the BA degree.

This chapter builds on the past to learn about the future: How does today’s use of tunnels differ from yesterday’s? What will tomorrow’s underground warfare look like? These questions are answered through the historical narrative and a database of over 40 years of New York Times reports on the use of tunnels in conflict. The NYT data fills some of the holes left by the absence of literature and helps shape the first typology of tunnels. This chapter offers conceptual and analytical tools for understanding and contending with tunnel warfare. It also encapsulates one of the book’s major arguments that, absent a major technological breakthrough, underground warfare is likely to intensify and continue its rapid diffusion in the coming years, following a pattern resembling that of suicide terrorism.

Abstract:
This chapter describes events surrounding Turkey's general elections in 2015. The outcome of June 7 elections was a huge disappointment for Erdogan. For the first time since 2002, the AKP failed to secure a parliamentary majority. It still garnered 40 percent of the votes, but with the entry of the HDP into the Parliament (also a historic first for a pro-Kurdish party), it no longer had the outright majority to change the constitution and pave the way to Erdogan's super-presidency. In August, Erdogan announced that talks to form a coalition government had failed, and he called snap elections. On November 1, 2015, Turkey held its second general elections in five months. The AKP won the parliamentary majority it had desperately sought, and it formed a new government. Emboldened by its win, it quickly moved to have two prominent journalists, Can Dundar and Erdem Gul arrested on charges of “aiding and abetting a terrorist organization, revealing state secrets, and spying.”

Abstract:
The aim of the study was to assess the impact of method management of mountain soil on the quantity and quality of waste water, and the amount of mineral nutrients it contains. I have analyzed the water, that was moved through the soil profiles of 0-20 cm and 0-40 cm depth. I have also evaluated the floristic composition, the productivity of grassland and arable land, and the use of fertilizers by vegetation and soil chemical properties. I have found that the type of plant cover of the soil had a significant effect on the amount and chemical composition of water moving through the soil profile. Arable land was characterized by an average of 5 percentage point higher drainage rates compared to meadows. The smallest outflow of water from the soil was found in the first research period (intensive vegetation), and the largest in the third period (non-vegetation). The largest amount of the mineral content carried out annually with a soaking water, was observed on the arable land and was on average more than 2 times larger than on other fertilizers. This evidenced by the greater variation in the composition of floristic vegetation and its productivity. Between 0-20 cm and 0-40 cm of soil profiles, significant differences in the amount of waste water and mineral components were observed. The water drainage coefficient from the shallow profile was on average 9 percentage points higher than from the deeper profile. The amount of the sum of mineral loads, excluding calcium from the shallow soil profile was 94,5% higher than the sum of loads taken from the deeper soil profile. In the unused meadow the improvement of soil chemical properties was observed. There was an increase in pH, and the accumulation of minerals resulted from the positive balance of most of the ingredients.

Abstract:
Surgery and radiotherapy for cancers can disrupt mental health through direct biological mechanisms in addition to the well-described psychological distress associated with the physical consequences of treatment. Upper bowel surgery and bilateral oophorectomy both frequently provoke psychopathology. Total gastrectomy, or ileal resection, causes an inevitable vitamin B12 deficiency. The molecular mechanisms by which these surgical treatments provoke depressive symptoms, or even a dementia, are considered. Raised homocysteine levels and reduced SAM availability are involved. Chronic gonadal oestrogen deprivation increases the risk of anxiety, depression, and dementia in later life. The likely molecular basis for this is discussed. Hypothyroidism, with its associated psychopathology, complicates radiotherapy for head & neck cancers in 40 per cent of patients. The chapter closes with a review of the effects of whole-brain radiotherapy on cognitive function, and the psychopathology arising from radiation-induced hypopituitarism.

Abstract:
In this introductory chapter, a hypothesis is put forward that a series of programmatic additions were made to the oracles against the nations in Isa 13-23 by the same circle of writers who were responsible for putting together chs 40-55 in the late-exilic period. Various views on the formation of chs 13-23 are surveyed because many critics suspect that there was a merger between a series of oracles belonging to the Isaiah tradition and an extra-Isaianic collection of oracles against the nations sometime in the post-exilic period – a theory that a priori negates the present study’s proposal. There are, however, not a few who prefer to envisage a more gradual growth of materials found in chs 13-23 and it is such an approach that this study adopts and attempts to build on.

Abstract:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has stated that significant health benefits are obtainable for persons with disability who engage in physical activity, recommending 30 to 40 minutes of daily, moderately intense activity. However, persons with MS are frequently physically inactive, with findings of a 6-month activity reduction rate of 6%. This progressive lessoning of physical activity over time is a major contributor to worsening of symptoms and ancillary medical complications such as cardiovascular disease, obesity, and impaired bone health, underpinning the importance of exercise and physical activity by persons with MS. In addition to its effect on endurance and body composition, exercise may also reduce disease activity in MS. A regular exercise program combining exercise and physical activity that is tailored to the patient’s individual condition should be an important part of the plan of care for patients with MS.

Abstract:
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) affects approximately 1 person in 40 and causes great morbidity and suffering worldwide. While much about this protean disorder remains unclear, our understanding has advanced along many fronts in recent decades, and evidence-based treatments can produce benefit in a majority of sufferers. This text brings together experts in all aspects of OCD, including clinical presentation, current psychological, genetic, and neurobiological understanding of its etiology and pathophysiology, and psychotherapeutic, pharmacological, and anatomically targeted treatments. OCD-related disorders and common comorbidities and their relationship to OCD itself are also discussed, as are theoretical and sociological issues. It is hoped that this text will provide a comprehensive introduction to the field for students, scientists and clinicians. By bringing together many different perspectives on OCD, we aim to encourage cross-disciplinary understanding, research, and advances in clinical care.

Abstract:
Our three existing master narratives of the early Reformation in Poland are all over a century old and mutually contradictory, drawing on different sources to serve differing confessional and national/ist agendas. This chapter offers a fresh narrative of the impact of Lutheranism on the Polish composite monarchy to c.1540, synthesizing these older accounts and updating them with new research findings. This is a narrative in three parts: early signs (1517–24), the great Reformation year (1525), and aftershocks (1526–40). The chapter discusses the challenges of measuring ‘Lutheran’ sentiment, sets these Polish-Prussian events clearly in their comparative European context, and considers what implications they might have for that bigger, familiar tale. It stresses the precocity of Sigismund I’s monarchy, which saw the most far-reaching urban and violent Reformation in 1520s Europe (Danzig), a peasant Reformation rising, and Christendom’s first territorial-princely Reformation, in Ducal Prussia.

Riley, Barry. Food Aid Under Carter and Reagan. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190228873.003.0018.

Abstract:
By the time Jimmy Carter entered the White House in 1977, American food aid had declined from 40 percent of U.S. agricultural exports in 1963 to less than 5 percent. Noted Harvard economic historian Emma Rothschild was arguing in the New York Times that the time had come to end it, as it no longer promoted any significant American interests. Carter had different views and sought, with the aid of Senator Humphrey, to make it a tool for enhancing human rights in recipient countries and improving its effectiveness in combatting hunger. Title III was reformulated to reward governments willing to engage seriously in improving the economic prospects of their poorest citizens. The attempt would eventually fail. Ronald Reagan was more interested in utilizing the private sector in developing countries to promote economic development, and introduced a new Food for Progress program managed by USDA to promote private-sector-focused agricultural growth.

Batson, C. Daniel. The Empathy-Altruism Hypothesis. Edited by Emma M. Seppälä, Emiliana Simon-Thomas, Stephanie L. Brown, Monica C. Worline, C. Daryl Cameron, and James R. Doty. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190464684.013.3.

Abstract:
Do we humans ever, in any degree, care for others for their sakes and not simply for our own? The empathy-altruism hypothesis offers an affirmative answer to this question. It claims that empathic concern (defined as “other-oriented emotion elicited by and congruent with the perceived welfare of another in need”) produces altruistic motivation (“a motivational state with the ultimate goal of increasing the other’s welfare”). Research over the past 40 years testing this hypothesis against egoistic alternatives has provided quite strong support. Empathy-induced altruistic motivation does seem to be within the human repertoire. This empathy-induced altruism may have its biological roots in generalized parental nurturance. Practical implications of the empathy-altruism hypothesis include both benefits and liabilities—for the targets of empathy, for others, and for the person feeling empathic concern. Implications of the empathy-altruism research for the content and conduct of compassion science are suggested.

Abstract:
The storm came on the night of 31 October. It was a full moon, and the tides were at their peak; the great rivers of eastern Bengal were flowing high and fast to the sea. In the early hours the inhabitants of the coast and islands were overtaken by an immense wave from the Bay of Bengal — a wall of water that reached a height of 40 feet in some places. The wave swept away everything in its path, drowning around 215,000 people. At least another 100,000 died in the cholera epidemic and famine that followed. It was the worst calamity of its kind in recorded history. Such events are often described as "natural disasters." This book turns that interpretation on its head, showing that the cyclone of 1876 was not simply a "natural" event, but one shaped by all-too-human patterns of exploitation and inequality — by divisions within Bengali society, and the enormous disparities of political and economic power that characterized British rule on the subcontinent. With Bangladesh facing rising sea levels and stronger, more frequent storms, there is every reason now to revisit this terrible calamity.

Lee, Jongkyung. Who planned this judgement against Tyre? (Isaiah 23:8–9, 11). Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198816768.003.0007.

Abstract:
A detailed study of the oracle concerning Tyre shows that vv 5, 8-9, 11 disturb the general flow of the main poem (23:1-14). The original poem was about the fall of Sidon and it consisted of vv 1b-4, 6-7, 10, 12-14. Sometime later, v 5 was added to include Tyre in a poem where many other Phoenician cities also appeared. This led to the ‘false’ identification of the poem by the editor who gave the poem its heading in v 1a. Subsequently, vv 8-9, 11 were added in the late-exilic period as hypothesized by the present study. The closeness in style and thought of 23:8-9, 11 with 14:26-27 and chs 40-49 supports the late-exilic date of the passage. Finally, sometime during the post-exilic period, 23:15-18 was written to express a hope for Tyre’s revival and even conversion (arguably).

Full text
Abstract:
Drylands cover around 40% of the land surface on Earth and are inhabited by more than 2 billion people, who are directly dependent on these lands. Drylands are characterized by a highly variable rainfall regime and inherent vegetation-climate feedbacks that can enhance the resilience of the system, but also can amplify disturbances. In that way, the system may get locked into two alternate stable states: one relatively wet and vegetated, and the other dry and barren. The resilience of dryland ecosystems derives from a number of adaptive mechanisms by which the vegetation copes with prolonged water stress, such as hydraulic redistribution. The stochastic nature of both the vegetation dynamics and the rainfall regime is a key characteristic of these systems and affects its management in relation to the feedbacks. How the ecohydrology of the African drylands will change in the future depends on further changes in climate, human disturbances, land use, and the socioeconomic system.
