Abstract:
The scientific communication is suffering considerable alterations so much in its process as in its structure and philosophy. The open archives and open access initiatives are contributing significantly for the undoing of the traditional model of scientific communication and for the construction of a new disaggregated model and with interoperability, fairer and efficient to disseminate the research results and like this, the knowledge generated by the scientific communities. However, due to the progresses of the information and communication technologies, not only the structure and the flow of the scientific communication is suffering considerable alterations, as well as the own concept and support of the scientific documents. This has been generating the need of the development of tools to optimize the organization, description, exchange and information retrieval processes, besides the digital preservation, among others. Highlight that the MARC format it has been allowing per decades the description and the exchange of bibliographical and cataloging registrations to the institutions, favoring the access to the contents informacionais contained in several collections. However, with the exponential growth of information and of the documents generation (above all digital), this has been demanding larger flexibility and interoperability among the several information systems available. In this scenery, the XML markup language is presented as one of the current developments that has as purpose to facilitate and to optimize the administration, storage and transmission of contents through Internet, it being incorporate for several sections and areas of the knowledge for the handling easiness and operational flexibility. Front to that, an exploratory study of theoretical analysis was accomplished, identifying the adaptation of the MARCXML format in the construction in ways of descriptive representation for information resources in open archives, as a complex and flexible standard of metadata, that will make possible the interoperability among information systems heterogeneous, besides the access to the information. As result of this research, It's considered that MARCXML is an appropriate format for description of data in a complex structure. It’s ended that the measure that increases the complexity of the documents in the repositories and open archives, plus it’s justified a structure of metadata, as the MARCXML format, that support the description of the pecificities of the informational resources, once this initiative is not and nor it will be if restricting to scientific documents, but expanding the other types of informational resources more and more complex and specific, also demanding an appropriate description for the specificities of the bibliographical entities.

Abstract:
Information finding is changing in a world of digital information and associated search systems, with particular focus on methods of locating information that are distinct from, but complementary to, established practices of bibliographic description. A full understanding of these developments is essential in re-thinking bibliographic control in the new millennium, because they fundamentally change the roles and importance of bibliographic metadata in information discovery processes. There are three major approaches to finding information: through bibliographic surrogates, that represent an intellectual description of aspects and attributes of a work; through computational, content-based techniques that compare queries to parts of the actual works themselves; and through social processes that consider works in relationship to the user and his or her characteristics and history, to other works, and also to the behavior of other communities of users.

Abstract:
This paper deconstructs the "MARC format" and similar newer tools like DC, XML, and RDF, separating structural issues from content-driven issues. Against that it examines the pressures from new types of digital resources, the responses to these pressures in format and content terms, and the transformations that may take place. The conflicting desires coming from users and librarians, the plethora of solutions to problems that constantly appear (some of which just might work), and the traditional access expectations are considered. Footnotes There are a large number of terms being used in the broader information community that often mean approximately the same thing, but relate concepts to the different backgrounds of the players. For example librarians are sometimes confused that metadata is something new and a replacement for either cataloging or MARC. Metadata is cataloging and not MARC. In this article terms based on library specialist terminology are used, with occasional use of alternative terms indicated below, depending on context. No difference in meaning is intended by the use of alternative terminology . The descriptions of the terms are indicative, not strict. cataloging data or cataloging content = metadata - used broadly, in this context, for all data (descriptive, administrative, and structural) that relates to the resources being described. content rules - rules for formulation of the data including controlled lists and codes. data elements - the individual identifiable pieces of cataloging data (e.g., name, title, subtitle) and including elements that are often called attributes or qualifiers (since generally this paper does not need to isolate data elements in to subtypes). relationships - the semantics that relate data elements, e.g., name is author of title, title has subtitle. content rules - the rules for formulating data element content structure = syntax - the physical arrangement of parts of an entity record - the bundle of information that describes a resource format = DTD - a defined specification of structure and markup markup = tag set = content designation - a system of symbols used to identify in some way the following data. ANSI/NISO Z39.2, Record Interchange Format, and ISO 2709, Format for Data Interchange. The two standards are essentially identical in specification. ANSI/NISO has a few provisions where the ISO standard is not specific, but there is no conflict between the two standards. Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records. Bozzarelli, Oriana. "Authority control. Teorie, applicazioni e prospettive di sviluppo." Thesis, 2004. http://eprints.rclis.org/14297/1/authority_control_OB.pdf.

Abstract:
The authority control, though being a process which integrates the catalogue architecture – and which assures the indexes quality (author, title, descriptor) and supports the relational and syndetic structure of the catalogue, endorsing capabilities of fully retrieving the information it contains – for a long time has been disregarded in the context of the theoretic thought of the catalogue pertaining process. During the last years this trend was reversed: the authority control gained a first level role on the international bibliotheconomic scenario; at the present time in this area there are many operative plans and new applications, often managed in a co-operative and trans-national way, in some cases stimulating the authority control to extend its range of action outside libraries, in order to interoperate with heterogeneous systems like archives, e-commerce systems and museums. This work wants to define the role and the functions of the nominal and semantic authority control. The first part deals with the authority control under the theoretic point of view: all its elements are examined, while its origin and development in the cataloguing process and in relation with the organisation and relational structure of the catalogue is outlined. The second part treats the semantic indexes control; after a short theoretic-normative report, the situation of the authority control in Italy, which has today, like it never had, a particular evolution, is deeply examined. Referring to the Sistema Biliotecario Nazionale (SBN, National Library Service), the story of the evolution of the semantic authority control in Italy is sketched, along with the new development perspectives favoured by the Nuovo Soggettario project. At the end this work treats what should be considered the most important existing project, on a co-operative international basis, of subject authority control: the Subject Authority Cooperative Program (SACO).

Abstract:
In the context of library studies and Information Science, descriptive representation a serie of specialist meetings trying to establish standards to bibliographic description. Originated by one of international meetings, FRBR - Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records, published by International Federation of Library Association and Institutions IFLA in 1998, it started a new interpretation of the bibliographic records was introduced, reorganizing their elements and presenting concepts and definitions of entities, attributes and relationships. The study became reflexes of the model FRBR in an electronic catalog, on-line, nationwide, through the examination of bibliographic records in format Machine Readable Cataloging – MARC, in order to systematize the relationship between the elements. Using appropriate literature and characteristics regarding potentials to realize the study, had been selected registers according to Catálogo Coletivo da Rede Bibliodata (Bibliodata Network Public Collection Catalog), and characterizing a study case. To illustrated the reflex of the model on the records, was used the conversional tool, FRBR Display Tool, from Library of Congress (LC), and besides the use of auxiliary tools when was made necessary. In order to complete the study, a few issues encountered in the literature were brought back as a manner to reach the goal of systematizing the relationships, given the relative failure of the tool under this aspect. Analytics stages comprise sample registers, notoriously descriptive and of the register converted in document that contains register model. In this phase, that is impossible to discuss every case, some tipical cases for each type of entitle purpose in FRBR. The results conducting to a necessity of register normalization and it is suggested tags MARC linking a better visualization of the model. Absence of discussions due to the use of models and international standards is considering as a potential trouble and there are paths indicated for the ways of future researches that would be realize, and one contribution to construct theorist corpus of the area.

Abstract:
This study results from the awareness of the insufficiency in standards and rules used for the identification and description of written musical documents. Enlightened by the new standard development, particularly the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) and recent studies on the concept of a work and bibliographic relationships, an equilibrium is intended between the music cataloguing rules normally used on libraries, very generalist, and the rules usually used by musicologists for the description of the same documents, particularly RISM rules, which are very specific an inaccessible to a lesser specialized public. Some proposals are made in order to contribute to the handling of music by the current revisions of FRBR, ISBD(PM) and UNIMARC. The final result is intended to be a description model according to the practice and the spirit underlying library cataloguing, still detailed enough to result in a useful tool to musicians and musicologists. The model is tested in a sample of bibliographic records from the opera Lauriane, composed by Augusto Machado.

Abstract:
The alterations to the way knowledge is produced and the great amount of documents stimulate and pressurize into changes in cataloguing. In this context, a theoretical model for cataloguing known as Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) was published in 1998. Generally speaking, the cataloguing codes are divided into two parts: one related to description and another to the access points. This work aims to analyse the procedures to choose the access points of personal responsibility of the bibliographic records, in order to relate them to the concepts shown in the FRBR. The present work is characterized as a theoretical search and the investigation resorts to deductive approach to analyse the rules and the internationally accepted principles utilized in the choice of the access points. This search also has an empirical part to collect factual data about the use of cataloguing rules and to compare the registers with or without the use of the FRBR. As a result, it is observed that the cataloguing rules are still directed to the impressed catalogues. However, the concepts presented by the FRBR are related to the automated catalogues. The FRBR enlarge the dimensions of the responsabilities about the content of work and expression, and they translate the social changes to the possibilities of information representation in the bibliographic records. With the FRBR the rules have to be stipulated to facilitate the user activities. This implies in the review of the cataloguing rules, mainly the ones related to the choice of the access point. In this way, the professional of information will pay more efforts to determine which the access points for the user are. Among the uncountable impacts caused by the FRBR, perhaps the most important are to resume the discussion about the cataloguing in theoretical level and to highlight the importance of intellectual work of professional of information.

Abstract:
This paper deals with the arranging, accession, indexing, and listing of the literary remains of Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Burghard Breitner (1884 – 1956). According to the "Literary Remains and Autographs Rules" (in German: "Regeln zur Erschließung von Nachlässen und Autographen", RNA), the items were identified and allocated to the following groups: manuscripts, correspondences, documents, and collections. The manuscripts were sorted chronologically, the correspondences were sorted alphabetically, and both the documents and the collections were sorted by means of subject terms. Following that, the items were filed in folders. Selected metadata (shelf number, author, title, writer of the letter, receiver of the letter, location, date, etc.) was written on the folders and entered in the inventory. Exemplarily, some manuscripts and correspondences were entered into allegro-HANS, a database established at the Austrian National Library aimed at the indexing of remains, according to the RNA. The records in allegro-HANS can be migrated to the union catalogue of the Austrian academic libraries, based on the library system Aleph 500. Due to the large extent of the remains, it was not possible to compile a complete catalogue. However, the selected folders give an impression of the character and importance of the remains. This paper also contains a short biography of Burghard Breitner and a list of his publications.

Abstract:
Analyzing the trajectory of the concept of authorship in society and, in particular, in different areas of scientific knowledge, one can conclude that it rose to prominence during Modernity and, from this period on, has been going through continuous change. Amidst constant debates about “authorship” in diverse areas of knowledge, it is important that research be carried out to integrate the context of social nature and documental representation. It is about an exploratory, theoretical investigation, based on bibliographic, documental, historical and comparative research whose object of study is the concept of authorship and of author in documental representation, by means of cataloguing codes adopted by descriptive representation in Brazil, namely: the Rules for the catalog of printed books, better known as Vatican code, the Anglo-American cataloguing rules (AACR) and Resource description and access (RDA). As the author is represented in the bibliographic records according to guidelines established in the cataloguing codes, reflections about authorship and its form of representation are instrumental for links to be created between bibliographic records, documents and users. Theoretical reflections about sociocultural issues and documental representation seek to go beyond the technicist view and assign a social function to the descriptive representation, thus being able of mobilizing a knowledge society by providing access to documents, respecting particularities of users and, consequently, contributing to the representation, circulation, use and production of new knowledge.

It discusses the notion of work in cataloguing as it was built since the 1950s, inasmuch this notion constitutes the conceptual framework for the proposal. Also, the entity-relationship database modeling (ERDM) system is described as far as such model provides to FRBR the operative elements that make it functional. ERDM gives to FRBR a user-centered approach as well. In its third chapter, the report tests the FRBR model through its application to a set of items belonging to the novel Rayuela, by Julio Cortázar, held at the Benson Latin American Collection of the University of Texas at Austin. Abstract:
The study aims to clarify whether or not the method of cataloguing used by the Handschriftensammlung of the Wiener Stadt- und Landesbibliothek and the Österreichisches Literaturarchiv of the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek fulfil the needs of the user and if the information being provided by the data base is enough. Last but not least the question of using standards is very important, because otherwise the library cannot become a member of cooperation, g.ex. MALVINE or LEAF. The research methods have taken a combined approach that has included both quantitative and qualitative research methods. On the one hand interviews were conducted to find out, what the users want and on the other hand the information provided by the data base was analysed. The results of the interviews show that the users are mostly satisfied with the information. There were some things mentioned which could certainly be improved. The conclusion was drawn that there are a number of benefits for the libraries if they take part in cooperation. Recommendations for further actions have been made by proposing a catalogue of measures on how the databases should be changed. Furthermore the fact that cooperations are considered as important by users should receive attention.

Abstract:
This MSc dissertation thesis focuses upon two main issues. First issue is to review the international practices on FRBRization with special interest on clustering procedures. Second issue is to study the effectiveness of these procedures on Greek library catalogs. The study begins with a short history review of library catalogs aiming to designate the reasons which led to conceptual models such as the FRBR. A brief analysis of the FRBR follows emphasizing on the changes they bring on the methods with which library catalogs are structured along with other changes. In Chapter 3, the study attempts a rather holistic approach on the international FRBRization practices in addition to clustering procedures. The fourth chapter of the study discusses the implementation of the international clustering procedures on Greek metadata. To fulfil this part of the research it was considered necessary to elaborate on Greek catalogs’ existing metadata. This task helps mainly on reporting the problems which seem to affect the clustering procedure overall. The chapter continues with recommendations for modifications and adjustments of the existing international clustering techniques in order to match special needs and features of Greek catalog structures. This will lead to delivering better FRBRization results of Greek metadata. The fifth chapter concludes the study and is divided in two main sections. The first section presents the problems and objections regarding the FRBRization and the ways it is currently put into practice. The second section reviews briefly the hands-on effort of implementing international FRBRization techniques on Greek metadata. Results show that it is a prerequisite for the FRBRization procedure in Greek catalogs to take into consideration their special features. But even then the effectiveness of the FRBRization techniques already reported in the international bibliography is not fully proved with the Greek catalogs.

The research on the prerequisites and on the basic aspects of the issue is made, and the analysis of the structure of “International decimal bibliographic classification” – first classification system which has been published in Ukraine in Ukrainian – is presented. The periodization history of the issue of decimal library classifications in the Ukrainian is made. There are: 1-st stage (1919 – 1938); 2-nd stage (1938 – 1961); 3-rd stage (1961-1971); 4-th stage (1971 end. - 70th). Also it is given the history of creation and issues of “Library-bibliographic classification”. The basic historical aspects of introduction of “Library-bibliographic classification” in Ukrainian territory is investigated and described. Its role in the further development of classification forms in our country is defined. The actual state of affairs in the aspect of the classification mechanism's existence and development in Ukraine is described. Two of basic used today systems are determined, and the perspectives for their further scale increase in Ukrainian practice are analyzed. Abstract:
Logical connection between the structural organization of the studied classifications' elements and their essential (ideological) content was proved and illustrated. There were provided analysis and were revealed peculiarities of the scientific principles and the principles of bibliographic organization of information through the prism of content (qualitative) and semantic (quantitative) constituents of systematization, in particular: hierarchical, tetralogical principle, atomism, decimal meaning, coincidence of opposites, convolution/deployment, deism, dynamism, division, rational perception, emanation, subordination on the one hand and alphabetical, concentration principle, integration, decimality, consistency, encyclopedic ability, extensibility, versatility, mnemonic ability, internationalism, multidimensionality, scientific, logic, stability, description, conglomeration, regularity, systematization from the other hand. There was summarized the experience of predecessors, engaged in the study, design and implementation of library-bibliographic classification systems in the context of development of sciences classifications, and it was also proved that previous research, focused on the analysis of classification systems, was related to the study of library catalogues' organization in which a quantitative structural component of the library classification was taken for basis, but systematization as a scientific category of essential and knowledge organization of information was not considered. It was defined and analyzed the facts of structural and logical availability with essential and ideological features of classification systems' organization in the context of systematization, such as: a quadromeaning, fasetizing, hierarchy and decimality. The complex explanation of necessity and probability of optimization in system is described and unification and harmonization of processes in area related to the information organization is given as well. Prospects of the development approaches and mechanisms for classification of information as a basic direction of documentary scientific study are outlined, nevertheless, it was proved that the structure of the classification system does not affect the content of the latter, as it is appropriate to the dynamic of knowledge, but its "artificiality" is only applies to the contents, therefore a comprehensive indexing of information resources of the UDC tables in Ukraine is absolutely possible. The content of some concepts is specified, in particular: "content" is a quantitative (formal) characteristic of semantic and syntactic classification components; "richness of content" is a meaningful (cognitive) characteristic of its semantic and syntactic components; "conglomeration" is a process of collections formation, which consists of various IRL, preserving all its principles of indexing for the consolidated presentation of notations of indexing, i.e. combining the potential of different IRL preserving their main features and properties; "folkindexing" is a public index or indexing by means of collective mind; "regularity" is a structural characterization of system, which is formed as the result of information systematics, when there is no clear subordination, and system formation is provided by the regularity of components; "Systematyzatsiynist" (the hierarchic characteristic of the system) is a structural characteristic of the system, which consists of the hierarchical set of elements, and connections between them express subordination to each other; "Systemnist" (the linear characteristic of the system) is a principle of classification formation, in accordance to which the classification acquires certain structural characteristics and transforms directly into the system of classification. In general, the results of the thesis research allowed to present library bibliographic classifications not just from the position of functional cell organization of the library catalogues, but first of all from the point of view of these classifications' significance in provision of the documentary systematization implementation processes through the prism of historically conditioned link between the evolution of sciences classifications and library-bibliographic classification systems. Thus, the classification systems of bibliographic information occupy a prominent place among the other possible mechanisms of the library systematization of scientific information, specifying scientism and validity of richness of bibliographic information content. Therefore bibliography as a science, along with the library science, belongs to the established field of socio-cultural activity, and amounts a much broader area of cognizance that contains all branches of knowledge which are anyhow presented by means of library-bibliographic classification systems with a projection on classification of sciences, because knowledge is the classified information.

In Austria, there are many written documents in arabic script. The reason that they are not known properly is to be found in the lack of resources (personal and financial), ignorance and disinterest. The aim of this work is to find out how to locate these documents systematically and how to make them accessible. For this one has to ask: "Who could have come into contact with people who wrote in Arabic script?" and "Where could the documents and items have ended up?" After archives and museums one has to look especially at monastery libraries and generally collecting libraries (in opposition to public libraries). Flukes and single occurrences can not be excluded. The best is to make the results accessible in a relational SQL database with the trancription system of the Deutsche Morgenländische Gesellschaft.

Abstract:
FRBR is a conceptual model for the bibliographic universe and aims to simplify browsing in online library catalogues with special regard to users' needs. The data format still in use in the Austrian Library Network is MAB2. Bibliographic records are created according to the rules for alphabetic cataloguing in academic libraries. In 2009 Primo was implemented – a software which is capable of normalizing bibliographic records for front-end display. This Master Thesis wants to highlight the possibilities in Primo for metadata display in accordance with FRBR and the problems occurring in this regard, illustrated by bibliographic records describing Franz Kafka's "Der Process" ("The trial"). The analysis focuses on three aspects: the concept of "work", expressions as valid entities and aggregates respectively multipart monographs. A short introduction into the FRBR model is followed by the attempt to create an ideal FRBR tree for the different manifestations of Kafka's "The trial". Problematic aspects within the model itself are highlighted. Subsequently bibliographic records from the Austrian Cooperative Catalogue are analyzed in order to show the FRBR capability of MAB2 and beyond that to explain the FRBR key options in Primo. Some limitations of FRBRizing MAB2 in Primo have been made particularly apparent: The data in MAB2 records is not consistent enough to enable catalogue displays in accordance with FRBR. Moreover, the possibilities of clustering works and facets may improve browsing for library users, but not as FRBR would propose.

This project focuses on the study of cataloging as a tool to promote research collections represented in the catalog. Moreover, it is argued that the catalog provides support to the activities of preservation and dissemination of cultural heritage. It started with a qualitative analysis of the bibliographic sources part of the heritage assets of the Cervantes Collection. Rules to be applied were evaluated and the technical process to follow when entering the sources into the database was defined, as well as the creation of an Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC). As a result, 172 bibliographic records were generated containing information on the different manifestations that comprise the work Don Quijote de La Mancha (Don Quixote of La Mancha) and thus showing the importance of this procedure to facilitate research and dissemination of the Cervantes Collection. An integrated library management system named PMB was used to create the OPAC. It concluded by highlighting the importance of the creation of a catalog that complies with quality standards to promote research on heritage collections, as well as the support the catalog offers to their preservation and dissemination activities.

Abstract:
The legal deposit is a process of submitting a required number of copies from each recorded material to an officially identified institution by the publisher in order to enable their preservation for the use of future generations. The history of legal deposit in the developed countries goes as far back as 16th century. Whereas in Turkey this process started only in the mid 19th century, and the applications to this extent has been far from meeting the expressed requirements. Therefore, the aims of this study are to identify the major shortcomings of legal deposit applications and further more to provide guide lines and recommendations in order to reforming the process. In the lights of the above mentioned aims of the study, the problem of our research has been formulated as “what are the major factors that hindered the effective development of legal deposit in Turkey which is vitally important for the cultural life of the country?” As for the hypothesis that has been proved is “despite the fact of expressing the need for a new legal deposit act, every effort to this end has emphasised on the political instead of cultural dimensions”. The historical method has been used in this study. The development of legal deposit activities since 1850’s has been discussed and examined throughly. The finding of the research has proved our hypothesis. Finally a list of recommendations has been provided.

Abstract:
The advent of "Web 2.0" signaled a shift in Internet usability which focuses primarily on the users and their needs. This also means a challenge for libraries. One area where change is essential is the area of the library catalogue or OPAC, the heart and soul of a library. Designers of OPACs have to face the fact that far more people are searching the internet than are using library catalogs and that the library's approach to user service and user interface is not competing successfully against services like Amazon or Google. If libraries want to avoid further marginalization, they need to analyse their concepts. The aim of this thesis is to describe the problems of traditional library online catalogues at universities and how the OPAC can become a more relevant and user centered system. First, a review of current literature is undertaken in order to investigate the issue of the "next generation catalog" and to discuss several solutions like catalog enrichment, Functional Requirements of Bibliographic Records and the integration of Web 2.0 applications. Then some exemplary OPACs which implemented Web 2.0 applications are presented. Furthermore qualitative interviews are conducted with librarians who are in charge of an OPAC 2.0. The interviews aim at analysing the state-of-the-art of these OPAC 2.0 projects. The main outcome of this thesis is that "the" OPAC 2.0 does not exist and that each library has specific requirements concerning an online-catalog. The findings suggest that libraries need to evaluate the environment they are dealing with accurately, especially target groups. Due to the fact that there are many attributes for catalog 2.0, decision-makers in libraries should carefully consider which tools and applications are necessary and reasonable.

Abstract:
The open access movement seeks to make as many scientific publications as possible freely available on the internet. In order to achieve this goal, besides establishing online journals which are free of charge, it follows the strategy of self-archiving. According to this strategy, scientists are required to make their peer-reviewed journal publications available in digital repositories while complying with copyright regulations. Meanwhile, such repositories have been established by many universities and research institutes. However, recent studies have shown that most academics do not make their publications available. In order to motivate scientists to deliver their publications to repositories and to record metadata, it is important that repositories provide an added value for scientists and that recording metadata about their studies becomes easier. The current study explores which quality criteria metadata must fulfill so that repositories can become an efficient tool for scientists and academics. In addition, it is argued that repositories must provide more extensive services and better interconnectedness to achieve this goal. I first discuss published findings from quantitative and qualitative surveys, which were conducted among scientists, to propose conceivable service models. After presenting general quality criteria for metadata, I illustrate how such criteria may be applied in repositories. Furthermore, functional requirements for the single elements of metadata are outlined. Finally, I describe procedures that should be introduced to decrease the efforts required by scientists as far as possible in recording metadata of their publications.

Ranganatan. These two systems are the series of issue of “Rubricator of VNLU” and the issue of “Universal decimal classification” published in the Ukrainian in 2000. Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is a section design of biographical data from a digital inter-operable library named VESTIGIUM. With this aim, we carried out an in-depth study on the regulation, technology and current projects concerning the information of persons, which we here refer to as biographical data or authority control. We therefore analysed the current level of name authority control, right from the first conceptualisations back in the 19th century, and the usual settings in which this type of data appears: libraries, archives and museums (LAM). We then analysed the current aspects of the new universe in which these abstract entities operate, since they can appear in multiple environments for different uses throughout the World Wide Web. This is the reason why the analysis becomes complex and limited, since authority records may be treated differently according to the context and use. The working method consists of both literature review techniques and fieldwork which aim to find information systems that operate with authority control on the internet as well as cases of use of linked data (LD). The creation of a regulatory framework in terms of name authority data in the scope of archives –International Standard Archival Authority Record For Corporate Bodies, Persons and Families (ISAAR (CPF)) and Encoded Archival Context – Corporate Bodies, Persons and Families (EAC-CPF)-, libraries and information science –Functional Requirements for Authority Data (FRAD), Guidelines for Authority Records and References (GARR), MARC 21 Format for Authority Data, Resource Description and Access (RDA), MARCXML, Metadata Authorities Description Schema (MADS)-, and in the implementation world of recommendations for metadata from the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) –Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI), Resource Description Framework (RDF), Friend to Friend (FOAF), RELATIONSHIP, and BIO- have enabled us to create a prototype that acts as grounds for the inter-operability of biographical data, ensuring visibility at international level. Likewise, the formats of export defined according to the rules and standards of the application actually enable data exchange, taking into account that the use of technologies from the Semantic Web allows the integration of data originating from various systems. The data model proposed in author´s table with contextual information complies with the four basic principles defined by Berners Lee for the publication of linked data. The benefits achieved by using the semantic regulation on the table are the following: improvements in the process of obtaining links between entities semantically similar or related, vocabularies of values, groups of metadata elements or data groups that originate from different sources which in turn also provide this kind of data.

This work aims to develop a method with semantic components to contribute to the integration of authority control related data, required by the ELINF project, which is stored in heterogeneous data sources into a software. The current research describes the developed method. At the same time, it describes the study case used for validating it, through the comparison of a software application developed without the proposed method and another one instantiating the method regarding to its capacity to integrate heterogeneous data sources.

Abstract:
Automatic classification of text documents refers to the computerized allocation of class numbers from existing classification schemes to natural language texts by means of suitable algorithms. Based upon a comprehensive literature review, this thesis establishes an informed and up-to-date view of the applicability of automatic classification for the subject approach to electronic documents, particularly to Web resources. Both methodological aspects and the experiences drawn from relevant projects and applications are covered. Concerning methodology, the present state-of-the-art comprises a number of statistical approaches that rely on machine learning; these methods use pre-classified example documents for establishing a model - the "classifier" - which is then used for classifying new documents. However, the four large-scale projects conducted in the 1990s by the Universities of Lund, Wolverhampton and Oldenburg, and by OCLC (Dublin, OH), still used rather simple and more traditional methodological approaches. These projects are described and analyzed in detail. As they made use of traditional library classifications their results are significant for LIS, even if no permanent quality services have resulted from these endeavours. The analysis of other relevant applications and projects reveals a number of attempts to use automatic classification for document processing in the fields of patent and media documentation. Here, semi-automatic solutions that support human classifiers are preferred, due to the yet unsatisfactory classification results obtained by fully automated systems. Other interesting implementations include Web portals, search engines and (commercial) information services, whereas only little interest has been shown in the automatic classification of books and bibliographic records. In the concluding part of the study the author discusses the most significant applications and projects, and also addresses several problems and issues in the context of automatic classification.

The decade of the 1990s saw the development of a proliferation of metadata element sets for resource description. This paper looks at a subset of these metadata schemes in more detail: the TEI header, EAD, Dublin Core, and VRA Core. It looks at why they developed as they did, major points of difference from traditional (AACR2/MARC) library cataloging, and what advantages they offer to their user communities. It also discusses challenges to implementers of these schemes and possible future developments. It goes on to identify some commonalties among these cases, and to attempt to generalize from these some lessons for developers of metadata element sets. It concludes by suggesting we also look carefully at emerging schemes being developed by publishers in support of electronic commerce and rights management, and think seriously about the implications of commodity metadata upon our traditional bibliographic apparatus.

Delimiting the object of study for understanding the conversion of analog bibliographic records to MARC 21 Bibliographic format, from the syntactic and semantic analysis of records described in patterns of descriptive metadata structure and content standards. The thesis of this research is that the syntactic and semantic principles of bibliographic records, defined by schemas describing and cataloging the display, in the standards of descriptive metadata structure and content standards, determine the process of converting bibliographic records MARC21 Format for Bibliographic. Based on this context, the proposition of this research is to develop a theoretical study of the syntax and semantics of bibliographic records, by the Linguistic bias, with Saussure and Hjelmslev, which subsidize the conversion of analog bibliographic records to MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic a computational interpreter . With this proposal, it is stated, as a general goal, develop a theoretical-conceptual model of syntax and semantics in bibliographic records from Saussureano hjelmslevianos and linguistic studies of the manifestations of human language, which is applicable to a computational interpreter aimed to conversion bibliographic records to MARC 21 Bibliographic format. To reach this goal it is through the following specific objectives, divided in two groups and directed respectively to the theoretical-conceptual model of syntactic structure and semantics of bibliographic records, and the conversion of their records process: explain the relationship between syntax and semantics of bibliographic in the light of linguistic aspects studied by Saussure and Hjelmslev, applicable to analog and digital media records; submit characteristic principles of syntax and semantics in bibliographic records; look through the available literature, the methods and procedures for conversion of bibliographic records to MARC 21 Bibliographic format; set method of image processing bibliographic records in analog optical character recognition (OCR) software; present computational interpretation technique that is focused on the conversion of analog bibliographic records to MARC 21 Bibliographic Format to consider the syntactic and semantic schemas. In view of the outlined objectives, the methodological approach of the research is based on a qualitative approach, exploratory, descriptive and experimental basis and uses the literature. As a result, it is expected to contribute significantly to the Information Science Similarly, considering social, inherent in human knowledge and the solution of the problem presented aspects. The greatest social benefit occasioned by this research relates closely, the aspects of sharing bibliographic records, and the possibility of extending access to the metadata of information resources represented by the various units of information. Contributions theoretically can be glimpsed on the development of issues related to syntactic and semantic aspects of bibliographic records, and involve, at one time, the interdisciplinary Information Science, Computer Science and Linguistics. Contributions in the practical field are identified by the study include the development of Scan for MARC, a computational interpreter that can be adopted by any institution wishing to make use of conversion databases of bibliographic records procedure, to MARC21 format Library from the description and visualization of bibliographic records (AACR2R and ISBD), that character is considered innovative research schemes.
