Abstract:
This study examines decision-making processes involved in the development, integration and management of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in self-managing secondary schools and influences that affect these processes. To obtain an holistic view of ICT decision-making processes, a case study is undertaken of three co-educational, state secondary schools within a regional New Zealand city, thereby establishing a multiple case study. The principal, network manager and three staff nominated by the principal as playing an active role in ICT decision-making processes were interviewed using an open-ended interview. Five frequently cited generic decision-making models, developed by theorists to describe specific features of the decision-making process, are examined to provide a theoretical platform against which the interview data are analysed and interpreted. The study concludes that ICT decision-making in the case study schools is influenced particularly by technical knowledge and understandings. Such decision-making tends to be ad-hoc, isolated from other important influences particularly in relation to teaching and learning issues, and 'bounded' because of limited information, the limitations of existing technology, and the inability of schools to keep abreast of technological changes. Six implications are therefore put forward to inform future ICT decision-making in schools. They are: 1. Schools should develop a strategic plan that is underpinned with technical planning requirements; 2. Technical advice and professional development should be provided for principals; 3. Principals should consult outside the school environment for technical advice to assist with decisions; 4. The role of the ICT committee should be redefined to include planning and development of ICT; 5. Principals should ensure that staff receive professional development; and 6. Schools should consider student access and the best way of integrating ICT into teaching and learning. The study highlights the need for schools to develop strategic plans that address teaching and learning issues in the development, integration and management of ICT in self-managing secondary schools. Technical decisions should be made in support of these.

Abstract:
This thesis explores musical creativity through ICT. It aims to show that secondary school pupils can compose ireely using ICT in the classroom, easing and "democratising" the creative process, enabling a high standard for all regardless of formal musical training. The fieldwork project was conducted across one secondary school (Years 9-13) and one middle school (Years 5-8) in the Windsor area from November 2002 - December 2003. There were opportunities in the music classrooms of both schools to develop creative ideas based around tonalities of the last 40 years, in spite of the fact that creativity in a non-tonal medium was well established in the professional field. I intended to show that pupils were more inventive and motivated in the music classroom when given opportunities to: a) Use ICT as an integral part of the creative process. b) Explore unusual sounds in a non-fixed-tonal environment. c) promote enthusiasm and motivation through learning by relevant and fascinating lesson content, enthusiastic delivery and an informal class atmosphere.

Abstract: The objective of this experimental work is to prove the applicability of I.N.T (Instituto Nacional de Tecnologia) concrete mixture proportioning method by analyzing the physical (specific gravity and consistency) and mechanical (compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength and static modulus of elasticity) properties of concrete. For so much, it were used local granitic crushed stone (São Paulo) as coarse aggregate, with nominal maximum particle size varying from 9.5 mm to 50 mm, natural sand dredged from river and artificial sand (fine fraction of crushed stone). Fifteen mixtures were prepared based on an optimal combined aggregate grading provided by the I. N. T. method, and a reference mixture using the same crushed stone as coarse aggregate with its original grading. The results showed that the method presents some incoherence in relation to the mechanical and physical characteristics, already anticipated by his author, Lobo Carneiro

Abstract:
Instrumented indentation testing (IIT) is a local method of caracterization which has highlighted a significant potential to probe materials’ behaviors. Nevertheless, for now, its use has been limited to metals, ceramics or more polymers. Thus IIT is rare in literature about mechanics of elastomers, mainly due to their local heterogeneity and viscoelasticity which are responsible for non-negligible experimental bias. The first aim of this thesis is to set up a robust protocol so as to bring relevant responses to practical industrial issues. Plethora of local phenomena in elastomers are serious candidates for the application of this technique. These works deal specifically with the influence of the micro-morphology and the loading-unloading kinematics when indenting a synthetic elastomer. The established protocol has then been used on industrial materials, for aeronautic and automotive uses, so as to probe the effects of a thermal ageing, a mechanical fatigue, different vulcanization rates and interfacial gradients of a polymer-elastomer composite

Abstract:
The hydrogeochemistry of the southern Lincolnshire Limestone is investigated employing inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) as the primary analytical technique. Two simultaneous, multi-element instruments were used. The principles of the technique and comparisons of the hardware, operating conditions and routine sample preparation methods are outlined and realistic levels of precision and detection limits evaluated. The range of determinations in the groundwaters was extended by the development of novel sample treatment techniques including the determination of dissolved sulphide down to the 1 level using a gas-liquid separator, and the determination of rare earth elements in groundwater evaporation residues. The methods were applied to the analysis of groundwaters and rocks of the Lincolnshire Limestone in southern Lincolnshire. The geology, hydrogeology and hydrochemistry of the aquifer are reviewed and the sample collection methods described, stressing the precautions taken to avoid contamination. The Lincolnshire Limestone is an aquifer of considerable heterogeneity, argillaceous limestones are intercalated with pure oolites and it is confined by predominantly clastic formations. The major element chemistry of the groundwaters follow a down-dip trend between calcium-bicarbonate-sulphate waters near outcrop and saline, non-potable waters in the east. The groundwaters are sub-divided into zones based on the processes of calcite dissolution, ion exchange and the mixing of recharge and saline interstitial waters. Minor and trace element behaviour is controlled by a combination of oxidation-reduction reactions, adsorption on clay minerals and organic matter, mineral solubilities, complex formation andgroundwater pH. Ultimately the low levels of most trace metals are limited by their low abundance in the limestone. Temporal hydrochemical trends are identified, and the influence of man, with reference to the down-gradient migration of agrichemical pollutants (e.g. nitrates) is assessed. Fluctuations in the movement of the potable/saline water interface are noted and theories on the origin of the saline waters reviewed.

Lam, Zamas. "Laser desorption ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (L.D.I.-F.T.-I.C.R.) mass spectrometric studies of some underivatized bacterial oligosaccharides." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/30726.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes the novel application of laser desorption ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (l.d.i.-F.t.-i.c.r.) mass spectrometry for determining the sequence of underivatized oligosaccharides. As a starting point, four model oligosaccharides obtained from bacteriophage degradation of the corresponding bacterial capsular polysaccharides were analyzed. The experiments progressed from a linear pentasaccharide (Klebsiella K44), to a linear pentasaccharide containing an acid-labile pyruvic acid (Klebsiella K3), to a linear tetrasaccharide containing an acetamido hexose and an acid-labile neuraminic acid (E. coli K9), and finally to a "3+1" branched tetrasaccharide containing an lactic acid ether and a base-labile O-acetate (Klebsiella 22). The glycosidic bond and significant ring cleavage fragmentations observed in the mass spectra could be used for the sequencing of all three linear oligosaccharides. Furthermore, these unusual ring-cleaved fragments also provided some tentative indication on the positions of linkage on several monosaccharide residues. The fragments derived from these model oligosaccharides were used to propose a logical interpretation of the l.d.i.-F.t.-i.c.r. mass spectra of commercially available polysaccharide reported by others. Polysaccharides that have similar primary and tertiary structures gave similar mass spectra. This may be rationalized by the fact that fragmentation occurred at the sample layer or the selvedge. Consequently, the mass spectra reflected the primary and tertiary structures of the polysaccharides in the solid state. Finally, this l.d.i.-F.t.-i.c.r. technique was employed to sequence an unknown oligosaccharide obtained by anhydrous hydrogen fluoride degradation of the bacterial capsular polysaccharide. It was concluded that the unknown sample is composed of two tetrasaccharides with the same carbohydrate components, but with one structure substituted with serine and the other with threonine. Furthermore, indirect evidence suggests that the amino acids are linked to the carboxylic acid group of the hexuronic acid. However, two possible structures could be proposed for these oligosaccharides. The experimental results showed that l.d.i.-F.t.-i.c.r. mass spectrometry is well suited for the analysis of underivatized oligosaccharides, where the abundant ring fragments observed, can be used for a tentative indication of positions of linkage information. Furthermore, the high resolution data can be used to confirm the presence of unusual sugars and substituents.

From the end of the Second World War on, medicine started to develop clinically and surgically in a way hitherto unknown. Due to more accurate diagnoses, new therapeutic resources and the development of new drugs and technological procedures that allowed physicians to risk major surgeries, sicknesses simply became extinct or controlled and life could start earlier and end later. But all this technological development ended up causing two new problems and two new challenges: the increase of sicknesses without well-established physiopathological bases, such as psychosomatic anxieties and illnesses, and a kind of deconstruction of the humanistic face of medicine -- a deconstruction that came to be known as the dehumanization of medicine. Perhaps this dehumanization of medicine should be understood as a need to reformulate the humanistic bases of the same, adapting to current technological advances, which certainly have changed the training and the performance of the physician as he exercises his profession. The focus of our attention during this research was to go back to the previous matter: the double concept of dehumanization-humanization of medicine, especially in hospitals. Theoretical support for understanding these concepts will be presented in the introductory chapters. The objective of this research has been to analyze the experience of the clinical practice of ICU pediatricians in a humanized hospital. We, therefore, adopted a specific qualitative research methodology based on the phenomenological-existential approach of Heidegger, Boss and Buber. Interviews were made and analyzed with five ICU pediatricians that work in a humanized children s hospital The doctors accounts reveal different views on: how to deal with death, with anxiety and with guilt; the presence of mothers in the ICU and the effect on hospital routine and medical clinical practice; the recognition (or non-recognition) of the physician s work by the parents and ICU professionals; (positive or negative) aspects of the physical environment of the ICU and of working conditions. Starting from the data collected, a profile can be made of the clinical experiences of those interviewed, emphasizing the strategies used by them to deal with the difficulties and adversities generally present in ICUs. The analysis of these experiences has revealed the importance of listening to the physicians and including the voice of the doctor in the humanization process of medicine and hospitals. New research fronts, in which are heard the voice of other doctors, other professionals, the mothers and the children too, have shown themselves to be important

This thesis documents the creation of a mobile phone learning application, developed in partnership between remote and urban secondary school students. Contextual background to Rural and Remote education is provided by historical examination of education policy development, technology adoption and the paradoxical social situation facing Indigenous students. The investigation utilised a design experiment case study, informed by video conference recordings, focus group interviews, online surveys, emails and classroom discussion notes. Data analysis identified the changing patterns of technology integration at each school during the collaborative design process, along with social interactions that occurred as the groups combined to achieve understanding and inform their learning. Collaboration of this nature between schools could promote higher levels of student interest in ICT. Indigenous knowledge was privileged throughout the App development process, which also explored the relationship between traditional Indigenous pedagogical practices and those ascribed to design and project-based learning. The findings contend that each school relied heavily on the use of graphics to clarify their understandings and that the use of culturally appropriate graphical strategies may improve understanding of computing and design processes that currently remain opaque to many. Pedagogy and classroom activities have frequently been typified by a disconnect with the schools’ local environment and this situation is more problematic for students attending rural schools, as they also experience the effects of a digital divide. Progressing the use of appropriate graphical resources may engage rural students through a cross cultural pedagogy that puts “place” at the core of their learning and promotes epistemic agency as they pursue significant questions relevant to their local environment. In doing so, there is potential to increase uptake of computing by Indigenous students and promote the transition of greater student numbers from the role of passive user to that of active technician, designer and developer.

Hubmayer, Antony Peter. "The secondary school music curriculum: an investigation of designed learning experiences that promote musical understanding." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/83571.

Full text
Abstract:
This folio of research employed a constructivist epistemological perspective to investigate the learning designs and pedagogical considerations used by teachers to promote musical understanding within the secondary school music curriculum. The three studies were framed by the following ideas: learning and teaching through experience (John Dewey and David Kolb); learning and teaching for musical understanding (Jackie Wiggins); and designing learning that makes more likely the construction of certain understandings (Charles Reigeluth, Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe). The focus was on the teacher’s role in designing and providing learning experiences rather than on students’ actual musical learning. The first folio topic examined the role of music ensemble competitions within the secondary school music curriculum and explored student perspectives on participation in competitions. A large number of research studies from the United States have explored a range of issues surrounding music competitions. However, there are few that have examined student learning perspectives on this experience, and even fewer studies that present an Australian viewpoint on music ensemble competitions. This qualitative study tracked the views of 265 students using three questionnaires strategically positioned throughout the ensemble year. Multiple choice data were examined using frequency analysis while written responses were themed and tallied. Findings indicated that students regarded competitive performances as more significant and motivating than noncompetitive, although both were highly valued. Teachers considered that competition participation alone did not achieve better musical outcomes but could generate unique motivational factors legitimising a heightened emphasis upon musicianship and additional rehearsals which could result in better musical understanding. The second folio topic examined the pedagogical strategies of teachers in designing and teaching an extended music remix classroom activity using Music ICT. Although music technologies in schools have been heavily researched, recent studies have encouraged more substantial research into observed teaching strategies. Ten secondary classroom music teachers, representing a range of teaching and Music ICT experience, were studied using a mixed method qualitative design that included document analysis, two lesson observations, three interviews, and three questionnaires. Data were analysed using a dual lens model, incorporating Lee Shulman’s Pedagogical Reasoning Model and Elizabeth Murphy’s Constructivist Checklist. Research findings demonstrated that teachers who could articulate a learning philosophy, as well as design their own instructional resources, tended to demonstrate pedagogy likely to lead to deeper student learning. Other findings indicated that teachers used constructivist influenced student-centred teaching strategies 75% of the time, and that unique Pedagogical Content Knowledge was most evident when teachers regularly connected musical concepts to software specific processes which they apply in the classroom. The third folio topic involved the development and exegesis of a designed music learning experience titled Boomacious, which is a practical instructional resource for secondary school Music ICT. As the exegesis indicates, it is a demonstration model for a researcher developed learning framework and an instructional design model. EMDCARE is a constructivist influenced Music ICT learning framework that emphasises guided discovery through the steps of: Experimentation; Modification; Deconstruction; Construction; Application; Reflection; and Extension. The instructional design model, entitled Amplified Instruction Depth (AID) provided differentiated levels of instructional guidance. The portfolio concluded that the three designed learning experiences were able to contribute to student learning, the promotion of musical understanding, pedagogy and classroom practice and the secondary school music curriculum through their operationalizing of constructivist learning theories.

Abstract:
The following study intended to find a correlation between trauma and social strata. For this, two skeletal samples from the medieval era (XII to XV centuries) were selected and analysed. The first one, Convento de S. Francisco de Santarém (CSFS) has a total of 144 individuals (34 male, 41 female e 69 de undetermined sex; 23 subadults, 11 young adults, 61 middle adults, 9 older adults e 40 undetermined adults), 101 of which were included in the sample for this study. This sample was collected from an archaeological dig in the central nave of the church of the Convento de S. Francisco de Santarém. The second one, Rua dos Barcos (RB), has a total of 147 individuals (62 male, 31 female and 54 of undetermined sex; 29 subadults, 40 young adults, 45 middle adults and 33 undetermined adults), 122 of which were included in the sample for the study. This sample was collected from the archaeological dig performed in the necropolis found in the parish of Ribeira de Santarém. This study tried to find, as stated above, a correlation between trauma and social strata. Firstly, the samples were studied to determine the Anatomical Conservation Index (A.C.I.) based on Garcia’s (2006) methodology. Each of the samples was then analysed by individual in order to identify evidence of trauma. After this initial analysis, each individuals’ patterns of skeletal trauma were studied using the standards set by Wedel and Galloway (2013). A total of 38 individuals with trauma were recorded, 14 from CSFS (13,86%) and 24 from RB (19,67%). The total number of lesions recorded was 73, 34 on CSFS and 39 on RB.

Abstract:
In the sequence of a structural and geochemical study about the SEDEX to volcanic affiliation of some metamorphic units of Serra de Arga (Northern Portugal), attention was drawn towards Covas dome, located in the Silurian terrains of Serra de Arga. A prior geochemical data set for the meta-volcanic rocks suggests a transitional signature between mantle source alkali basalts and transitional-tholeiitic to transitional-calcalkaline magmatic series. The primitive genesis and emplacement of those rocks as well as some contemporary vanadium-rich exhalative facies are consistent with back-arc anoxic basin systems, precursor to rifting onset (Dias, 2011). At Cerdeirinha mine, one of the ore deposits of Covas Dome, tungsten mineralization, although remobilized by metassomatism, might be considered partially related to Silurian volcanic activity. Apparently in the main front of Cerdeirinha open pit, previously to the calcsilicate paragenesis of metasomatic type there would be structural devices and relics of syngenetic signatures of the SEDEX-type (Leal Gomes et al., 2011). The present study was focused mainly in the structures of the deposit, its survey and detailed analysis especially of the main clearing front of the open pit. Also, paragenetic analysis, E.P.M.A., and L.A.-I.C.P.-M.S. measurements were executed. In what regional metamorphism and ore geothermmobarometry concerns, hornblendeplagioclase intergrowth, chlorites and arsenopyrite were analysed. L.A.-I.C.P.-M.S. pyrite compositions are not clearly conclusive, but could be related with only sedimentary-exhalative setting or with a SEDEX signature overprinted due to hydrothermal alteration, adding up with some skarn-like assemblages. Contents of REE scheelite and apatite suggest a fluid fractionation and an order of crystallization sequenced from central to periphery of the rock exposures at the open pit domain. A Mn-rich indetermination was found, possibly related with a primordial submarine Mn-rich exhalation. This study did not found a clear and strict evidence of a protolithic SEDEX setting, however it shows some indications of this type of pristine depositions that must be thought of in future studies.

Abstract:
The cognitive and behavioral sequelae of brain injury can severely limit activities and restrict participation. People with acquired brain injury require adapted and specific reeducation and rehabilitation. To respond to these needs, a rehabilitation program was developed within the Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine Service of Pitié-Salpêtrière, Paris, France. This thesis seeks to explore the effectiveness of this program on participant’s levels of activity and participation. More specifically, the objectives were to: 1) define and validate the rehabilitation program with the multidisciplinary team; 2) measure the effects of the rehabilitation program on participant participation levels and 3) explore possible links between the problem, the interventions in the program, and the effects of the program on participant’s activity and participation levels. With respect to the first objective of documenting the rehabilitation program, we used the logic model of Champagne et al., 2009). Semi-structured interviews were carried out with members of the multi-disciplinary team. The documentation of each program activity was validated by groups of experts. For the second objective, a quasi-experimental study was carried out with ‘single-case’ multiple repeated measures. Six repeated measures were used: three pre-program and three post-program up until six months. Results were analyzed using (i) visual analysis of graphic data which represented the evolution of participants over time and (ii) statistical analyses. In the initial preparation phase, tools measuring body functions and structure, activity and participation were identified. The situational measurement tools chosen were reliable and valid. Principal outcomes were (i) participants’ activity level evaluated by the Cooking Task (Chevignard et al., 2000) and the Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Profile (IADL Profile) (Bottari et al., 2009) and (ii) participants’ participation level evaluated by the IADL Profile and the Life Habits assessment’ (LIFE-H) (Noreau et al., 2002). For the third objective, a logic theory analysis was based on the cognitive model of executive functions of Lezak (1982) and on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). This analysis demonstrates the validity of the cooking activity and thereby promotes the recognition of such activities within multidisciplinary rehabilitation programs. For the measurement of the effects of the rehabilitation program, significant differences in the total number of errors in the Cooking Task (for 6/7 participants) and in the need for help (IADL Profile) (6/7 participants) between the pre- and post-program phases were observed. On the LIFE-H assessment, some improvements were shown for the ‘preparation of meal’ item for 4/7 participants. The overall results of the Cooking Task, IADLP and LIFE-H scale suggest a global improvement for the activity ‘meal preparation’ after the rehabilitation program. This improvement is maintained over time. The identification of tools to measure limitations in activity and participation levels in real life situations assists informed decision-making in rehabilitation. This thesis contributes to the advancement of knowledge in rehabilitation. Few studies have gone this far in documenting a multidisciplinary and holistic rehabilitation program and in understanding the relation between its effects and care processes.

Full text
Abstract:
This is a historical study of AWG Champion, the former leader of the Industrial and Commercial Workers' Union (ICU) and provincial President of the African National Congress, in the politics of Zululand and Natal from 1965 to 1975. The study examines the introduction of the Zulu homeland and how different political forces in that region of South Africa responded to the idea of a Zulu homeland during the period under review. It also deals with Champion's political alienation from the ANC. This dissertation is also a study of the development of Zulu ethnic nationalism within the structures of apartheid or separate development, the homelands. Issues running throughout the study are the questions of how and why Champion tried and failed to manipulate `separate development' in order to build a Zulu ethnic political base.
