Abstract:
Cultured skin fibroblasts were examined from two probands with type II (lethal) osteogenesis imperfecta. One proband had a single base mutation which converted the glycine codon at position alpha 1-244 in the alpha 1(I) chain of procollagen I into a cysteine codon whereas the other had a similar mutation that converted the glycine codon at position alpha 2-787 of the alpha 2(I) chain into a cysteine codon. Both mutations produced post-translational overmodification of procollagen I. The Cys alpha 1-244 mutation, however, had a minimal effect on the thermal stability or secretion of the protein whereas the Cys alpha 2-787 mutation markedly decreased the thermal stability and, apparently as a result, essentially none of the mutated protein was secreted. The results provide clear exceptions to two previous generalizations about the position-specificity of glycine substitutions in procollagen I.

Abstract:
The PB2 subunit of the influenza RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) has been identified as a promising target for the treatment of influenza. To expand the chemical space of the known influenza polymerase PB2 inhibitor–pimodivir (formerly VX-787) and improve its pharmacokinetic profile, two pimodivir analogs containing 2,3-dihydro-imidazopyridine fragment (comp. I and comp. II) were designed, synthesized, and evaluated for anti-influenza virus activity. In the cytopathic effect (CPE) inhibition assay, comp. I and comp. II showed IC50 values of 0.07 and 0.09 μM for A/Puerto Rico/8/34 (H1N1) and 0.04 and 0.07 μM for A/Hong Kong/8/68 (H3N2), respectively. Protein-binding affinity assay results showed a concentration-dependent association and dissociation pattern, with KD values of 1.398 and 1.670 μM, respectively. In vitro metabolic stability assays showed that comp. I and comp. II exhibited good stability to liver microsomes and considerably less sensitivity to aldehyde oxidase compared to pimodivir. The binding modes of comp. I and comp. II were similar to those of VX-787; however, comp. I and comp. II had lower structural adaptability to PB2 than VX-787. Our results provide helpful information regarding the structure–activity relationship for the design of novel PB2 inhibitors and a reference for the development of drugs containing 2,3-dihydro-imidazopyridine fragments.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Colistin is a last-resort antibiotic for multidrug resistant gram-negative infections. Recently, a new allele of the mobile colistin resistance (mcr) gene family designated mcr-9, has been reported. However, its clinical and phenotypic significance remains unclear. Methods The Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention-funded Georgia Emerging Infections Program (EIP) performs population- and laboratory- based surveillance for CRE isolated from sterile sites or urine in metropolitan Atlanta, GA including standardized chart abstraction. We queried genomes of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) for mcr-9 from a convenience sample of Georgia EIP clinical isolates between 2012-2017. Isolates underwent phenotypic characterization by broth microdilution and population analysis profiling. Nine available E. cloacae (two mcr-9 positive, seven mcr-9 negative) genomes from the National Institutes of Health were included in downstream genomic analysis. Fastq files underwent de novo assembly, annotation and AMR and virulence gene prediction, pan-genome association analysis, pairwise comparisons of average nucleotide identity and phylogenetic tree construction based on core genes. We compared characteristics and outcomes of mcr-9 positive and negative CRE cases. Results Among 449 sequenced CRE genomes, thirteen (2.9%) were found to harbor mcr-9, all of which were E. cloacae. Fourteen mcr-9 negative E. cloacae (n=14) were included as a comparative group. E. cloacae was most commonly isolated from the urine (22/24, 86%), and none were community associated. The median colistin MIC, rates of heteroresistance and inducible resistance were similar between mcr-9 positive and negative isolates (Table 1). 90-day mortality was high in both mcr-9 positive (31%) and negative (7% cases (p=0.28, Table 1). Phylogenetic analysis revealed no geo-temporal clustering (Figure 1). Plasmid-associated genes were significantly associated with the presence of mcr-9 (p< 0.001). Phylogeny and average nucleotide identity heatmap of mcr-9 positive and mcr-9 negative E. cloacae. Figure Legend 1: Phylogeny and average nucleotide identity heatmap of mcr-9 positive (n=13) and mcr-9 negative (n=14) E. cloacae from Georgia Emerging Infection program in addition to 9 available E. cloacae (two mcr-9 positive, seven mcr-9 negative) from the National Institutes of Health. A phylogenetic tree based on a core gene alignment containing 1,904 genes defined using Roary v3.13.0. was generated using IQtree v2.0.3. A maximum likelihood tree was generated by running 1,000 bootstrap replicates under the generalized time-reversible model of evolution. The tree was visualized and annotated using Interactive Tree of Life (iTOL) v4. Pairwise comparisons of average nucleotide identity on the assembled genomes were performed with the Mashmap method using fastANI v1.32. Abbreviations: GA EIP: Georgia Emerging Infection Program, NIH: National Institutes of Health, Table 1: Carbapenem-resistant E. cloacae clinical and microbiological characteristics Conclusion The presence of mcr-9 was not associated with significant changes in colistin resistance or clinical outcomes. ABSTRACT The knowledge of root canal morphology and the existing anatomical variations is essential for successful endodontic therapy. This report presents an extraordinary case of unusual tooth morphology involving the mandibular first molar with a single root and a single canal in a patient. Endodontic treatment of the affected tooth 36 was performed. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images confirmed our diagnostic and therapeutic measures after endodontic management of the teeth. This morphologic variation has been reported once in the literature. The availability of three-dimensional images further provided the opportunity for the precise description of the anatomy of mandibular first molar with single roots and single canals. Abstract:
Phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of Salmonella Typhi were studied in 30 strains, isolated in different years, from some areas in Brazil. Conventional typing methods were performed by biochemical tests, Vi phage-typing scheme, and antimicrobial susceptibility test. Molecular typing methods were performed by analysis of plasmid DNA and by random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD-PCR). For the latter, an optimization step was performed to ensure the reproducibility of the process in genetic characterization of S. Typhi. The predominance of 76.7% of biotype I (xylose +, arabinose -) was noticed in all studied areas. Three phage types were recognized, with prominence for the phage types A (73.3%) and I+IV (23.3%). All the strains were susceptible to the drugs used. However, 36.7% of the strains contained plasmids, with predominance of the 105 Kb plasmid. RAPD was capable of grouping the strains in 8 genotypic patterns using primer 784, in 6, using primer 787 and in 7, using primer 797. Conventional phenotypic typing methods, as well as the DNA plasmid analysis, presented nonsignificant discriminatory power; however, RAPD-PCR analysis showed discriminatory power, reproducibility, easy interpretation and performance, being considered as a promising alternative typing method for S. Typhi.

Abstract:
By the end of the 8th century, after the expedition of 783 led by Staurakios the imperial forces began the reestablishing of the imperial control over those parts of the Peloponnesus which had previously been in the hands of independent Slavs for about 200 years. The result was the administrative reorganization of the whole of the peninsula. The administrative reorganization was followed by the ecclesiastical one. Thus, in the so-called Notitia 2, written after 805/806 and before the end of 814, we find an entirely new image of the ecclesiastical organization of that part of the Empire. Alongside the old Metropolis of Corinth, there are now two new metropolitan sees - that of Patras and that of Athens. The Metropolis of Patras was founded by the charter of the emperor Nikephoros I, between 1st november 805 and 25th february 806. But, the Church of Patras already existed even before that moment, as an autocephalous archbishopric, subordinated directly to the patriarchical throne of Constantinople, and its existence in that rank was attested as early as 787. The Metropolis of Athens was established sometime during that same period, in the reign of patriarch Tarasios, but after the Council of 787, so the date of its establishment could be placed between 787 and 806. Like the Church of Patras, the Church of Athens also had the rank of autocephalous archbishopric, subordinated directly to Constantinople, before it was elevated to the rank of metropolis. It is not certain when the Church of Athens received the rank of autocephalous archbishopric. What were reasons for the creation of these new metropolitan sees within the old province of the Metropolis of Corinth? The ancient Metropolis of Corinth was the ecclesiastical center of the ancient province of Achaia, which in the later Roman times covered all of the Peloponnesus and Central Greece. But, the province of Achaia existed no more and so the rights and claims of the See of Corinth lost their value. For during the two-century-long rule of the pagan Slavs in vast regions of the Peloponnesus, the ecclesiastical organization in these regions vanished, and the jurisdiction of the See of Corinth was limited only to those parts of the former province of Achaia which remained under imperial control (that is the lands east of the Corinth-Malea line). When the Slavs of the Peloponnesus were defeated and subdued, after 783, the process of their christianization began, but the territory once controlled by them was not placed under the jurisdiction of the See of Corinth. In that territory, the autocephalous archbishopric of Patras was established and subjugated directly to Constantinople. Later, after the emperor Nikephoros crushed the Slavic rebellion, he established an independent Metropolis of Patras, in 805/806 which jurisdiction exclusively covered all of the former Slav-controlled territory of the peninsula. The new theme of the Peloponnesus was created out of the old imperial possessions in the peninsula, cut off from the old theme of Hellas, joined by the newly gained territories of the former Slavic parts of the peninsula. The theme of Hellas was thus limited to the territory that lay north of the Corinthian Isthmus. As a result of the separation of the new theme of Peloponnesus from the old theme of Hellas, which left Corinth in the territory of the new theme, the new ecclesiastical authority was established for the territory which was left to the theme of Hellas, i.e. for the territory north of the Corinthian Isthmus - the Metropolis of Athens. That event occurred after the Ecumenical Council of 787 and before the death of patriarche Tarasios in 806. Thus, as a result of all these changes in the administrative and ecclesiastical framework, the entirely new image of the Peloponnesus and Central Greece appeared at the beginning of the 9th century. Old, now smaller, theme of Hellas got its new Metropolis of Athens. The old Metropolis of Corinth remained head of the new theme of Peloponnesus, and the new Metropolis of Patras was created for the Slavic part of the theme of Peloponnesus. New administrative division caused new ecclesiastical organization. It was not based on patterns of old, late Roman principles, nor they were revived, but it was that new conditions demanded new responses. The Empire found them, in the finest manner of Byzantine oikonomia.

Abstract:
Borders of the Papal State in the Second Half of 8th Century in the Light of Early Sources In 756 as the result of donation made by frankish king Pepin papacy formally controlled duchy of Rome, part of former exarchate of Ravenna (earlier directly submitted to Ravenna), larger part of duchy of the Pentapolis and probably duchy of Perugia. Papacy claimed belonged to Lombards territory of plenaria iustitiae (part of Pentapolis and duchy of Ferrara) as well. In 765 king Desiderius transfered to papacy not plenaria iustitiae but some parts of Tuscany, duchy of Benevento and duchy of Spoleto. In 774 took place frankish intervention which destroyed lombard kingdom. Frankish king Charlemagne conveyed to pope Hadrian I new territories (lombard Tuscany, Corsica, Spoleto, Benevento, Istria, Veneto) and confirmed old donations. However the pope had not possibility to really take over these lands. In 781 as the recompensation king conveyed to Hadrian southern part of Lombard Tuscany, territory of Sabina, part of Campania and confirmed territories in exarchate and Pentapolis. Corsica, Sardinia and Sicily were added as well. In 787 papacy received next part of Campania. Determination of the shape of the territories practically controlled by the pope is very difficult because in many lands there were problems with introduction of real papal reign.

Abstract:
Background. Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a common surgical acute abdomen. Different kinds of pancreatitis may have different pathophysiological characteristics each other. The objective of this research was to investigate the early clinical features and complications of different types of acute pancreatitis. Methods. 787 AP patients admitted in the Huadu District People’s Hospital of Guangzhou during January 2009 and December 2019 were analyzed retrospectively. Among 787 AP patients, 520 (66.1%) were biliary AP (group I), 69 (8.7%) were alcoholic AP (group II), and 198 (25.2%) were hypertriglyceridemic AP (group III). According to the local and systemic complications and mortality in the early stage, we compared and analyzed the clinical characteristics and prognosis of different types of pancreatitis. Results. Mild acute pancreatitis accounted for the highest proportion (79.4%) in group I, while moderately severe acute pancreatitis in group II (36.2%) and severe acute pancreatitis in group III (62.6%). In terms of severity score of the pancreatitis, the average scores of BISAP, Ranson, APACHE-II, and MCTSI of the patients in group III were the highest ( p < 0.01 ). The incidence of acute peripancreatic fluid collection and infectious pancreatic necrosis was the highest in group III. The incidences of acute necrotic collection, pancreatic pseudocyst, and walled-off necrosis in group III were significantly higher than those in the other two groups ( p < 0.01 ). The incidences of systemic inflammatory response syndrome, sepsis, multiple organ failure, intra-abdominal hypertension, and mortality were highest in group III. Conclusions. There is an upward trend of the incidence rate of hypertriglyceridemic AP in recent years; it has been gradually developed into the second type of acute pancreatitis which is second only to the acute biliary pancreatitis. It is worthy to pay more and more attentions to it due to the feature of its younger onset, high incidence of complications, and high mortality.

Antioxidant activity was 18.60 %, 18.06 %, 19.99 % and 7.54 % for andaliman fruit juice of 10%, 20%, 30% and 0%, respectively. TBA value was 1.03 %, 0.89 %, 0.09 % and 0.10 % for treatment II, III, IV and I, respectively. Antioxidant activity of andaliman fruit was decreased the amounts of Benzo (a) pyrene of duckmeat. Charcoal duck meat without andaliman fruit produced 787 ng, it was higher than charcoal duck meat with andaliman fruit (295 ng).

Abstract:
To take more account of the terroir effect in varietal choice and address the concerns of cotton farmers who disapprove the agricultural policy of single variety, research on varietal regionalization was initiated during four campaigns, by the Agricultural Research Center for Cotton Fibers. This idea is reinforced by the diversity of agro-ecological zones of the country. The nonrenewal of the variety in extension since the 2002-2003 campaign is also an element of justification concerns of industry players. This study aims to exploit the terroir effect to identify the most suitable varieties for each agroecological zone and meet the needs of industry players including producers and ginners. The experiment was conducted in 2011-2012 on Angaradébou sites, Okpara, Savalou and Ketou respectively representing the zones 1 (Alibori / Atakora); 2 (Borgou / Donga); 3 (Hills) and 4 (Zou / Ouemé Plateau / Mono-Couffo). The adopted experimental device is a Fisher block with four replicate and eight treatments or varieties H 279-1 in extension witness. Other varieties include E 944-2; E 956-2; H 769-5; H 782-3; I 875-3; K 768-3 and K 787-2.The measured parameters are the earliness of production, seed cotton yield in the field, the weight of 100 seeds and the fiber ginning outturn. Data analysis revealed significant differences between and inside sites for most measured parameters. The results showed that varieties E 956-2 (1983.85 kg / ha), H 769-5 (1820.49 kg / ha), K 768-3 (1735.42 kg / ha) and H 782-3 (1533.59 kg / ha) in terms of seed cotton yield in the field and compared their performance to shattering were the best respectively in zones 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Purpose There remain a lack of biomarkers for endocrine therapy resistance in patients with breast cancer (BC), which is proving to be a great challenge. In vitro experiments have shown that downregulation of PTEN expression leads to resistance to tamoxifen (TAM) in BC cells. We aimed to investigate the predictive role of tumor PTEN promoter methylation and PTEN expression in long-term survival after TAM adjuvant therapy in patients with early-stage BC. Methods From 2001 to 2013, 105 patients with stage I–III BC who were treated with standardized adjuvant TAM for 5 years or until relapse in West China Hospital (WCH) were enrolled in this study. PTEN expression and DNA methylation of three specified sequences from the PTEN promoter in primary tumors were measured using immunohistochemistry and pyrosequencing. A cohort of 159 hormone receptor-positive patients receiving TAM treatment from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database was used for verification. Results Median follow-up time for the WCH cohort was 141.7 months. The low, moderate, and high PTEN expression groups had differing 10-year disease-free survival (DFS) (42.3%, 55%, 81%, respectively, P = 0.027) and overall survival (OS) rates (65%, 84.2%, 90.5%, respectively, P = 0.027). Higher methylation levels of the second sequence (− 819 to − 787 bp), rather than the first (− 1143 to − 1107 bp) or third sequence (− 663 to − 593 bp), independently increased the risk of disease recurrence (hazard ratio = 2.60) and death (hazard ratio = 3.79) in the WCH cohort, according to multivariate Cox regression analysis. Importantly, out of the five CpG islands located within this sequence, only high methylation of the − 796 CpG island predicted shorter DFS and OS. In TCGA validation cohort, there was also a trend of higher methylation of the − 796 CpG island correlating with shorter disease-free intervals, with borderline significance (P = 0.057). Conclusion Low PTEN expression and high methylation of its promoter (sequence − 819 to − 787 bp) in tissue predict poor DFS and OS in hormone receptor-positive early BC patients who received adjuvant TAM.

ISSN 0804–4643 This prospective study was conducted to determine the effect of Octreotide treatment on cardiovascular function in patients with active acromegaly. Ten acromegalic patients who failed to suppress growth hormone (GH) to < 5 mU/l during a 2 h oral glucose tolerance test were treated with 100 μg of Octreotide subcutaneously three times daily for 2 months, followed by 200 μg three times daily if the mean GH level was > 5 mU/l, for a total of 1 year. All patients had GH and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) estimation, ejection fraction determined by Echocardiogram and multigated image acquisition scan, electrocardiogram (ECG), exercise ECG, 24-h ECG and chest x-ray. At 6 and 12 months, both GH and IGF-I were reduced but ECG, heart size and ejection fraction were unchanged. The patients improved symptomatically and had significant reduction in resting heart rate and increase in weight. Exercise time (mean±sd) increased from 637 ± 137s at baseline to 787 ± 101s at 1 year (p < 0.01) and work done increased from 9 ± 3.3 to 11.9 ± 2.7 metabolic equivalents (p< 0.001). We conclude that the decrease in GH and IGF-I following Octreotide treatment of acromegaly is accompanied by decreased heart rate and increased exercise capacity despite an unchanged ejection fraction. Abstract:
Objective: Microalbuminuria (MA) is related to cardiovascular disease both in diabetic patients and non-diabetic subjects. Design: We investigated whether a polymorphism near the promoter region of the IGF-I gene was related to the development of MA. Methods: For this study, 1069 participants of the Rotterdam study were selected (440 participants with an abnormal glucose tolerance (AGT), 220 participants with type 2 diabetes and 254 subjects with pre-diabetes, and 595 subjects with a normal glucose tolerance (NGT). Results: 787 subjects were carriers of the wild type IGF-I genotype (73.6%) and 282 subjects were variant carriers (26.4%) of this IGF-I gene polymorphism. Compared to subjects with NGT the risk for microalbuminuria was higher (Odds Ratio (OR): 3.1 (95% CI: 1.2–7.7); P = 0.02) in variant carriers with AGT than in carriers of the wild type of this IGF-I gene polymorphism (OR: 2.2 (95% CI: 1.2–4.0); P = 0.009). Compared with wild type carriers with AGT, the relative risk for MA was unadjusted and non-significantly increased in variant carriers with AGT (1.6; 95% CI: 0.8–2.9). However, after adjustment for possible confounding factors (age, gender, mean blood pressure, fasting insulin, fasting glucose and smoking) this risk became significant (OR: RR 2.1; 95% CI:1.1–4.4; P = 0.04). Conclusions: In subjects with AGT, a higher risk for MA was observed in variant carriers than in carriers of the wild type genotype of this IGF-I gene polymorphism. Since MA is primarily associated with cardiovascular disease in subjects with AGT, our study suggests that variant carriers have a higher risk for cardiovascular disease than carriers of the wild type when they develop an AGT.

Abstract:
Hispanic/Latino communities have suffered a disproportionate burden of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although Puerto Rico has one of the highest COVID-19 primary series vaccination rates nationwide, this estimate contrasts with the reported booster doses’ low uptake. This study aimed to assess health belief correlates of COVID-19 vaccine booster uptake. Using a convenience sampling approach, the Puerto Rico-Community Engagement Alliance (PR-CEAL) conducted a cross-sectional study where 787 participants were recruited using online and in-person strategies between December 2021 and February 2022. Participants were adults 18 years or older, Spanish-speaking, and residents of Puerto Rico. The Health Belief Model was used to evaluate attitudes and beliefs. A total of 784 participants were used in this analysis. Adjusted Poisson regression models were used to estimate prevalence ratios (PR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of booster refusal. Overall, 22% of participants refused the vaccine booster or had not gotten it yet. Adjusted models showed that (i) participants who disagreed that getting the booster dose either made them feel less worried about COVID-19 or (ii) felt that the vaccine decreased their chances of getting COVID-19 presented higher booster-refusal prevalence ratios (PR = 4.20, 95% CI: 3.00, 5.90; PR = 3.70, 95% CI: 2.64, 5.18). Moreover, participants that (iii) reported having concerns for booster side effects [PR = 2.47; 95% CI = 1.73, 3.51], (iv) booster efficacy [PR = 2.50; 95% CI = 1.75, 3.58], and (v) booster safety [PR = 2.80; 95% CI = 1.96, 3.99] were significantly more likely to refuse the booster. In conclusion, booster vaccination refusal was associated with lower perceived vaccine benefits and greater barriers among adults in Puerto Rico. These results informed the development of PR-CEAL’s targeted community outreach strategies and public health campaigns to increase booster vaccine uptake.

Abstract:
Despite the relevance of forests to biodiversity and climate change, education and careers related to them are still unattractive to young people. This paper presents findings from a study whose goal is to investigate the motivation and career aspirations of students in forest-related programmes at the university/tertiary level around the globe. The analysis is based on data gathered through a survey of 787 bachelor's, master's, and PhD students from 82 countries. The findings reveal that the choice of forest-related programmes by students is guided by (i) the desire to do beneficial work, specifically to make a positive difference for the environment/communities, (ii) job satisfaction, e. g., enjoyable work, and (iii) working outdoors. With regard to career pathways, students were most interested in working in forest-related nature and biodiversity conservation and least interested in forest-related industry and non-forest-related fields. The study found significant differences across continents regarding student preferences but only a few across study levels and gender. This paper provides useful insights that can help in tailoring forest-related programmes to meet the expectations of the students and universities.

Abstract:
Abstract The fiscal tradition regarding the taxation of the “Christians of the Banū Taġlib” is related to a ṣulḥ established by caliph ʿUmar b. al-Ḫaṭṭāb. He is said to have ordered to double the social contribution of Muslims, called ṣadaqa, in return for their renunciation of baptizing their children. This contribution analyzes the chronology of the emergence of this case in Abbasid literature. By studying the isnād on which scholars, beginning with the Grand Qāḍī Abū Yūsuf (d. 182/798), relied, I suggest a new theme at the end of the eighth century CE. On the one hand, all the issues of the ṣadaqa levying, the social bonds with Christian Arabs, and finally, the category of the Banū Taġlib itself, are related to the ongoing construction, and then to the freezing, of two social categories: the ethnical “arabness” and the genealogical tribal organization. On the other hand, Miaphysite ecclesiology confirms a consistent timeline for the rise of the Taglibōyē bishopric. In order to explain this late inrush of information, two events of ca. 153/770 and 171/787, respectively from the Syrian-Orthodox and the Arab-Muslim literatures, refer first to the migration/invasion of pastoralists and farmers of Banū Taġlib towards the north, and second to their anti-ṣadaqa revolt in the steppe of the hinterland of Mosul. The second occurrence takes place amidst numerous local insurgencies whose motivation are in part tribal, khariji, and – perhaps foremost – anti-fiscal. Indeed, the dynamics of formation of this peculiar Mosulian tribe were partly generated by the irruption of the state in Northern Iraq and the Jazīra during the 170s/790s, between al-Mahdī’s founding of Rāfiqa in ca. 154/772 and Hārūn al-Rashīd’s strengthening of administrative pressure. The key factor for state building at this time was the development of a new set of taxation on agricultural incomes of (Muslim) Arabs, called ṣadaqat al-māl or zakāt, whose first traces are attested in Middle Egypt during the late Marwānid period. A generation later, the anonymous author of Zuqnīn, who lived at the beginning of this period, is not only the first Syriac writer to mention the Taglibōyē, but also bears witness of the first extension of the levy of ṣadaqa to Northern Mesopotamia. He even gives data about its ex officio settlement (taʿdīl) as a non-proportional (ʿalā misāḥa) and in-cash tax, exactly the same as for the properties of the (Christian) Syrians. Both kinds of rural landlords probably petitioned against this system during the following decades, aiming to switch to a proportional (muqāsama) and in-kind method of taxation. This resistance perhaps involved the anti-ṣadaqa revolt of the Taġlib in 171/787, as it was decisive to transform the kharāj on the Muslims into a tenth (ʿushr). Whereas Abū Yūsuf suggests an analogical doubling of the tax on a Muslim land to convert it into kharāj for a Christian purchaser, the very idea of a double ṣadaqa as kharāj for Christian Arabs had perhaps been invented a very short time before.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Aims Iliac wing (Type I) and iliosacral (Type I/IV) pelvic resections for a primary bone tumour create a large segmental defect in the pelvic ring. The management of this defect is controversial as the surgeon may choose to reconstruct it or not. When no reconstruction is undertaken, the residual ilium collapses back onto the remaining sacrum forming an iliosacral pseudarthrosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term oncological outcome, complications, and functional outcome after pelvic resection without reconstruction. Methods Between 1989 and 2015, 32 patients underwent a Type I or Type I/IV pelvic resection without reconstruction for a primary bone tumour. There were 21 men and 11 women with a mean age of 35 years (15 to 85). The most common diagnosis was chondrosarcoma (50%, n = 16). Local recurrence-free, metastasis-free, and overall survival were assessed using the Kaplan-Meier method. Patient function was evaluated using the Musculoskeletal Tumour Society (MSTS) and Toronto Extremity Salvage Score (TESS). Results At a mean follow-up of 159 months (1 to 207), 23 patients were alive without disease, one was alive with lung metastases, one was alive following local recurrence, four were dead of disease, and three had died from other causes. The overall ten-year survival was 77%. There was only one (3%) local recurrence, which occurred at 26 months. There were 18 complications in 17 patients; 13 wound healing complications/infections, three fractures, one pulmonary embolism, and one dislocation of the hip. Most complications occurred early. The mean functional scores were 21.1 (SD 8.1) for MSTS-87, 67.3 (SD 23.9) for MSTS-93 and 76.2 (SD 20.6) for TESS. Conclusion Patients requiring Type I or Type I/IV pelvic resections can expect a good oncological outcome and a high rate of local control. Complications are generally acute in nature and are easily manageable. These patients achieved a good functional outcome without the need for bony reconstruction. Abstract:
Previous studies demonstrated that chlorzoxazone or 1-ethyl-2-benzimidazolinone (1-EBIO) enhances transepithelial Cl− secretion by increasing basolateral K+ conductance ( G K) (Singh AK, Devor DC, Gerlach AC, Gondor M, Pilewski JM, and Bridges RJ. J Pharmacol Exp Ther 292: 778–787, 2000). Hence these compounds may be useful to treat cystic fibrosis (CF) airway disease. The goal of the present study was to determine whether chlorzoxazone or 1-EBIO altered ion transport across ΔF508-CF transmembrane conductance regulator homozygous CFT1 airway cells. CFT1 monolayers exhibited a basal short-circuit current that was abolished by apical amiloride (inhibition constant 320 nM) as expected for Na+ absorption. The addition of chlorzoxazone (400 μM) or 1-EBIO (2 mM) increased the amiloride-sensitive I sc ∼2.5-fold. This overlapping specificity may preclude use of these compounds as CF therapeutics. Assaying for changes in the basolateral G K with a K+ gradient plus the pore-forming antibiotic amphotericin B revealed that chlorzoxazone or 1-EBIO evoked an ∼10-fold increase in clotrimazole-sensitive G K. In contrast, chlorzoxazone did not alter epithelial Na+ channel-mediated currents across basolateral-permeabilized monolayers or in Xenopus oocytes. These data further suggest that alterations in basolateral G K alone can modulate epithelial Na+ transport.

Abstract:
The local distribution of the isotopic composition and molar mass M of a new silicon crystal (Si28-24Pr11) highly enriched in the 28Si isotope is reported, with focus on the experimental methods as well as on the associated uncertainties. The crystal was used in 2018 for the production of two additional silicon spheres for the realization and verification of the Avogadro constant NA using the “X-ray-crystal-density (XRCD) method” which is a primary method for the dissemination of the revised SI units mole and kilogram. 17 subsamples have been investigated (from five different axial and in several radial positions) by isotope ratio mass spectrometry using a multicollector-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (MC-ICP-MS). The average molar mass of the crystal is M = 27.976 933 787(77) g/mol with a relative combined uncertainty uc,rel(M) = 2.7 × 10−9. The mean amount-of-substance fraction of 28Si is x(28Si) = 0.999 993 104 (66) mol/mol indicating that this crystal has the highest enrichment in this isotope which has ever been used for the determination of NA. No local variations in M and x(iSi) (i = 28, 29, and 30) could be identified due to material properties. The results are compared with those from two previous enriched crystals.

Abstract:
Molecular germplasm characterization is essential for gathering information on favorable attributes and varietal improvement. The current study evaluated the genetic divergence and population structure of 80 potato genotypes collected from Punjab, Pakistan, using polymorphic retrotransposon-DNA-based markers (iPBS). A total of 11 iPBS primers generated 787 alleles with a mean value of 8.9 alleles per primer, of which ~95% were polymorphic across the 80 genotypes. Different variation attributes, such as mean expected heterozygosity (H = 0.21), mean unbiased expected heterozygosity (µHe = 0.22), and mean Shannon’s information index (I = 0.32), showed the existence of sufficient genetic diversity in the studied potato genotypes. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) showed that genetic variation within the population was higher (84%) than between populations (16%). A neighbor-joining tree was constructed based on the distance matrices that arranged the 80 genotypes into five distinct groups, and the genotypes FD61-3 and potato 2 had the highest genetic distance. A STRUCTURE analysis corroborated the dendrogram results and distributed the 80 genotypes also into five clusters. Our results determined that retrotransposon-based markers are highly polymorphic and could be used to evaluate genetic diversity between local and exotic potato genotypes. The genotypic data and population structure dissection analysis reported in this study will enhance potato varietal improvement and development.

Abstract:
2575 Background: Based on the current knowledge of tumor biology there is a rationale to combine targeted therapies that block different growth factor pathways. Here we combined PTK/ZK, a small molecule inhibitor of all three vascular endothelial growth factor receptors, PDGFR and c-kit, with cetuximab, a monoclonal antibody against the epidermal growth factor receptor. Methods: In this phase I study patients were treated with PTK/ZK daily (cohort 1; 750 mg od, cohort 2; 1250 mg od, cohort 3; 250 mg [morning] and 500 mg [evening], cohort 4; 500 mg [morning] and 750 mg [evening]) combined with cetuximab 250mg/m2 weekly in cycles of 28 days in cohorts of 3 patients. Toxicity was evaluated conform CTCAE classification version 3.0. Pharmacokinetics and circulating endothelial (progenitor) (CE(P)) cell analysis by flow cytometry were performed. Response was assessed using RECIST criteria. Results: Safety and tolerability were evaluated in 16 out of 18 treated patients (median age 61, range 43–78) with advanced tumors of the colon (8), lung (1), chordoma (2), biliary tract (1), cervix (1), ovarian (1), breast (1) and pancreatic cancer (1). The most frequently reported adverse events (all CTCAE grades) were acne (87%), dry skin (81%), fatigue (69%), nausea (63%), ataxia/dizziness (50%), vomiting (50%), headache (38%) and diarrhea (31%). One dose limiting toxicity (DLT) occurred in cohort 3 (grade 3 transaminitis (AST)). The study was terminated after cohort 4 because the predefined maximum doses for vatalanib and cetuximab were attained. Preliminary PK analysis revealed no significant changes in PTK/ZK exposure upon coadministration with cetuximab. Biomarker analysis showed stabilized CE(P)Cs levels during treatment. 7 out of 14 patients evaluable for efficacy analysis (50%) showed SD for at least 2 months and 1 patient (colon cancer) a PR for 11.5 months. Conclusions: This study shows that the combination of PTK/ZK and cetuximab is well tolerated with only slightly overlapping toxicity profiles and has anti tumor activity. No MTD was defined; the recommended phase II dose is the predefined maximum combination dose: weekly cetuximab 250 mg/m2 combined with twice daily PTK/ZK 500/750 mg. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Abstract:
One has to be brave to return to the subject of Byzantine Iconoclasm, a subject which, we may feel, has been done to death. But the division in Byzantine society which lasted off and on for over a century, from 726 to the ‘restoration of orthodoxy’ in 843, was so profound that any Byzantine historian must at some time try to grapple with it. This is especially so if one is trying to understand the immediately preceding period, from the Persian invasions of the early seventh century to the great sieges of Constantinople by the Arabs in 674-8 and 717. It is well recognized by historians that this was a time of fundamental social, economic, and administrative change, which coincided with, but was by no means wholly caused by, the loss of so much Byzantine territory to the Arabs. However, the connection, if any, of this process of change with the social and religious upheaval known as Iconoclasm still leaves much to be said; indeed, no simple connection is likely in itself to provide an adequate explanation. In this paper I want to explore further some of the background to the crisis, without attempting here to provide a general explanation for Iconoclasm itself. I shall not venture beyond the first phase of Iconoclasm, which ended with the Second Council of Nicaea in 787, and after which the argument is somewhat different. Indeed, I shall be focusing here not even on the period known as ‘first Iconoclasm’, but mainly on the preceding period, when the issues inherent in the controversy were already, and increasingly, making themselves felt. Though we shall inevitably be concerned with some of the arguments brought against icons by their opponents, it is the place of images themselves in the context of the pre-Iconoclastic period which will be the main issue. Finally, while I want to offer a different way of reading the rise of icons, I do not pretend that it is the only one, or even possibly the most important. I do suggest, though, that it can help us to make sense of some of the issues that were involved.

Abstract:
The purpose: to establish a combined approach to the treatment of patients with epithelial and endothelial cornea dystrophy (EED) based on a comparative study of the results of one-step and two-step methods. Patients and methods. The study included 75 patients (81 eyes) with corneal EED, who underwent surgical treatment at the Ufa Eye Research Institute from 2011 to 2016. The patients were divided into two groups — the main group consisted of 43 (46 eyes, 57 %) patients, who underwent the first stage of the CC before surgical treatment of EED, the second stage after 1–12 months — automated posterior lamellar keratoplasty (APLK). In the control group, isolated APLK was performed in 32 (35 eyes, 43 %) patients. Results. After CC (1–10 days) in the main group an increase in corneal thickness due to edema enhancement in the cornea stroma was observed in patients with stage I–III of the corneal EED. After 3 months, a decrease in corneal thickness was recorded in patients of the main group with I-II stages of the disease (p < 0.05), after 6 months — in all stages of the corneal EED compared with the control group (p < 0.05). According to optical coherence tomography (OCT), a decrease in the total cornea thickness in both зфешутеы groups was noted within 12 months after APLK: in the main group from 667 ± 65 μm initially to 594 ± 31 μm, in the control group, where there was a pronounced corneal edema from 787 ± 56 to 612 ± 67 μm. Conclusion. Corneal cross-linking in patients with I–III stages of corneal EED provides improvement of the cornea, manifested in reducing edema and its thickness. It allows to delay the implementation of the automated posterior lamellar keratoplasty without corneal deterioration in patients with stage I up to 6–12 months, in patients with stage II–III up to 3–6 months.

Abstract:
Treatment of interferon-sensitive Daudi cell with electrophoretically pure human interferon alpha markedly reduced the level of c-myc mRNA, increased the level of class I histocompatibility antigen (HLA) mRNA, and did not affect the level of actin mRNA within the same cells. In contrast, the level of c-myc mRNA or HLA mRNA did not change significantly following interferon treatment in different clones of Daudi cells selected for resistance to the antiproliferative action of interferon. These cells possessed interferon receptors, however, and responded to interferon modulation of other genes, including 2',5' oligoisoadenylate synthetase (M. G. Tovey, M. Dron, K. E. Mogensen, B. Lebleu, N. Metchi, and J. Begon-Lours, Guymarho, J. Gen. Virol., 64:2649-2653, 1983; M. Dron, M. G. Tovey, and P. Eid, J. Gen. Virol., 66:787-795, 1985). A clone of interferon-resistant Daudi cells which had reverted to almost complete sensitivity to both the antiproliferative action of interferon and the interferon-enhanced expression of HLA mRNA remained refractory, however, to interferon modulation of c-myc expression, suggesting that a reduced level of c-myc mRNA may not be a prerequisite for inhibition of cell proliferation in interferon-treated cells. Our results do not exclude the possibility, however, that posttranscriptional modification(s) of c-myc expression may precede an inhibition of cell proliferation in interferon-treated cells.

Abstract:
The paper provides a deepened insight into the role of anisotropy in the analysis of residual stresses in arteries. Residual deformations are modelled following Holzapfel and Ogden (Holzapfel and Ogden 2010, J. R. Soc. Interface 7 , 787–799. ( doi:10.1098/rsif.2009.0357 )), which is based on extensive experimental data on human abdominal aortas (Holzapfel et al. 2007, Ann. Biomed. Eng. 35 , 530–545. ( doi:10.1007/s10439-006-9252-z )) and accounts for both circumferential and axial residual deformations of the individual layers of arteries—intima, media and adventitia. Each layer exhibits distinctive nonlinear and anisotropic mechanical behaviour originating from its unique microstructure; therefore, we use the most general form of strain-energy function (Holzapfel et al. 2015, J. R. Soc. Interface 12 , 20150188. ( doi:10.1098/rsif.2015.0188 )) to derive residual stresses for each layer individually. Finally, the systematic experimental data (Niestrawska et al. 2016, J. R. Soc. Interface 13 , 20160620. ( doi:10.1098/rsif.2016.0620 )) on both mechanical and structural properties of the different layers of the human abdominal aorta facilitate our discussion on (i) the importance of anisotropy in modelling residual stresses; (ii) the variability of residual stresses within the same class of tissue, the abdominal aorta; (iii) the limitations of conventional opening angle method to account for complex residual deformations; and (iv) the effect of residual stresses on the loaded configuration of the aorta mimicking in vivo conditions.

Abstract:
Redox flow batteries are a promising electrochemical technology for low-cost, scalable and long-duration energy storage, but their energy market penetration is hampered by elevated costs1,2. One effective strategy is to increase the overall efficiency of the electrochemical stack. At the core of the electrochemical cells, the design of the flow fields—which distribute the electrolyte through the porous electrodes—determines, in combination with the electrode microstructure, the performance of the system3. To date, current designs are inspired on fuel cell technologies but have not been engineered for redox flow cells where single-phase reactive flows are sustained4. In this work, we tailor lung-inspired flow field geometries for carbon paper electrodes using stereolithography 3D printing5,6. We propose two new lung-inspired geometries—with two and three channel levels—and compare them to a baseline interdigitated flow field. A two-step process based on stereolithography 3D printing followed by the application of a conductive coating is used to manufacture these complex flow field geometries. We employ a suite of electrochemical (i.e., polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) and fluid dynamic (pressure drop measurement) techniques together with numerical modelling to elucidate flow architecture-performance relationships. We find that lung-inspired structural patterns homogenize the electrolyte distribution into the electrode, accessing a larger electrode reaction area. These fractal geometries can outperform traditional interdigitated flow fields, providing a more favourable balance between low pressure drop and high electrochemical performance (Figure 1). In this talk, I aim to leverage lung-inspired flow field geometries as a promising prospect for engineering advanced flow cell architectures for emerging electrochemical devices. References 1 E.
