Abstract:
Standard real-valued finite-difference (FD) and Fourier finite-difference (FFD) migrations cannot handle evanescent waves correctly, which can lead to numerical instabilities in the presence of strong velocity variations. A possible solution to these problems is the complex Padé approximation, which avoids problems with evanescent waves by rotating the branch cut of the complex square root. We have applied this approximation to the acoustic wave equation for vertical transversely isotropic media to derive more stable FD and hybrid FD/FFD migrations for such media. Our analysis of the dispersion relation of the new method indicates that it should provide more stable migration results with fewer artifacts and higher accuracy at steep dips. Our studies lead to the conclusion that the rotation angle of the branch cut that should yield the most stable image is 60° for FD migration, as confirmed by numerical impulse responses and work with synthetic data.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of deleterious mutations in a hybrid zone maintained by selection against hybrids. In such zones, linkage disequilibria among hybrid depression loci, resulting from a balance between migration and selection, are crucial in maintaining the barrier because they allow each locus, in addition to its own selection coefficient, to cumulate indirect selective effects from other loci. Deleterious alleles produce heterosis and increase by this means the effective migration rate in structured populations. In a hybrid zone, they therefore contribute to decrease linkage disequilibria as well as the barrier to gene flow imposed by hybrid depression. However, deleterious mutations have no effect: (i) when selection against hybrids is weak, because linkage disequilibria are small even without heterosis in this case, or (ii) when selection against hybrids is so strong that it overwhelms heterosis. On the other hand, with moderate selection against hybrids, the decrease in the strength of the barrier due to heterosis may reach detectable levels, although it requires relatively small population sizes and/or migration rates. The effect is expected to be small and only within small genomes where loci are tightly linked can it become strong. Nevertheless, neglecting mutational load may to some extent obscure the estimations of selective parameters based either on artificial F1 crosses or on cline characteristics.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to research of features of the use of migration as an important instrument for the prosecution of hybrid war. Using a complex of general scientific, logical, and empirical scientific methods, two main strategies of using migration policy in the context of conducting hybrid aggression are singled out: positive and negative. A positive strategy involves the use of migrants by the aggressor state to strengthen its own positions and spread its own influence over the victim state. In such cases, the aggressor state, as a rule, directs migration flows to its own territory, using the arriving migrants as an instrument to strengthen its potential. In the case of using a negative strategy, the goal is to weaken the victim state by directing migration flows to its territory. For this, migrants from underdeveloped countries are most often used, who a priori can be a potential destabilizing factor in the territory of the country that has become the object of hybrid aggression. It is emphasized that in order to achieve its own goals through the effective use of migration processes, the aggressor state needs to control three main parameters of international migration: the number of migrants and the composition of migration flows; the direction of movement of migrants; and the behavior of migrants in a new place of residence. In the first case, important parameters describing migrants may be their level of qualification, the ethnic and religious composition of the migrating population, their age and gender characteristics, etc. In the second case, we are talking about emigration or immigration, which will ultimately affect the population of a certain country or territory. The third case involves monitoring the level of stability of a certain country or region and, consequently, forcing the victim state to take certain actions. It is emphasized that the exercise of control over the parameters mentioned above and their choice depend on the chosen strategy of using migration as an instrument during the implementation of hybrid aggression.

In the face of hybridization, species integrity can only be maintained through post-zygotic isolating barriers (PIBs). PIBs need not only be intrinsic (i.e. hybrid inviability and sterility caused by developmental incompatibilities), but also can be extrinsic due to the hybrid's intermediate phenotype falling between the parental niches. For example, in migratory species, hybrid fitness might be reduced as a result of intermediate migration pathways and reaching suboptimal wintering grounds. Here, we test this idea by comparing the juvenile to adult survival probabilities as well as the wintering grounds of pied flycatchers ( Ficedula hypoleuca ), collared flycatchers ( Ficedula albicollis ) and their hybrids using stable isotope ratios of carbon (δ 13 C) and nitrogen (δ 15 N) in feathers developed at the wintering site. Our result supports earlier observations of largely segregated wintering grounds of the two parental species. The isotope signature of hybrids clustered with that of pied flycatchers. We argue that this pattern can explain the high annual survival of hybrid flycatchers. Hence, dominant expression of the traits of one of the parental species in hybrids may substantially reduce the ecological costs of hybridization.

Background Zones of contact between closely related taxa with divergent migratory routes, termed migratory divides, have been suggested as areas where hybrid offspring may have intermediate and inferior migratory routes, resulting in low fitness of hybrids and thereby promoting speciation. In the Rocky Mountains of Canada there is a narrow hybrid zone between Audubon’s and myrtle warblers that is likely maintained by selection against hybrids. Band recoveries and isotopic studies indicate that this hybrid zone broadly corresponds to the location of a possible migratory divide, with Audubon’s warblers migrating south-southwest and myrtle warblers migrating southeast. We tested a key prediction of the migratory divide hypothesis: that genetic background would be predictive of migratory orientation among warblers in the center of the hybrid zone. Methods We recorded fall migratory orientation of wild-caught migrating warblers in the center of the hybrid zone as measured by video-based monitoring of migratory restlessness in circular orientation chambers. We then tested whether there was a relationship between migratory orientation and genetic background, as measured using a set of species-specific diagnostic genetic markers. Results We did not detect a significant association between orientation and genetic background. There was large variation among individuals in orientation direction. Mean orientation was towards the NE, surprising for birds on fall migration, but aligned with the mountain valley in which the study took place. Conclusions Only one other study has directly analyzed migratory orientation among naturally-produced hybrids in a migratory divide. While the other study showed an association between genetic background and orientation, we did not observe such an association in yellow-rumped warblers. We discuss possible reasons, including the possibility of a lack of a strong migratory divide in this hybrid zone and/or methodological limitations that may have prevented accurate measurements of long-distance migratory orientation.

This research work focuses on the mitigation and migration of IAAS, PAAS, and SAAS services of the cloud. My contribution in this research will be in how to avoid loss of data during mitigation and migration of the VM from one Hypervisor environment to the other hypervisor environment on a physical machine infrastructure. This will help SME’s to provide end-user access to their data without worrying about the losses which may have incurred if the Mitigation process was not carried out carefully while migrating VM’s from one bare metal Hypervisor environment to the other bare metal Hypervisor environment.

Recently, we showed that N-acetylglucosamine kinase (NAGK), an enzyme of amino sugar metabolism, interacts with dynein light chain roadblock type 1 (DYNLRB1) and promotes the functions of dynein motor. Here, we report that NAGK interacts with nuclear distribution protein C (NudC) and lissencephaly 1 (Lis1) in the dynein complex. Yeast two-hybrid assays, pull-down assays, immunocytochemistry, and proximity ligation assays revealed NAGK–NudC–Lis1–dynein complexes around nuclei, at the leading poles of migrating HEK293T cells, and at the tips of migratory processes of cultured rat neuroblast cells. The exogenous expression of red fluorescent protein (RFP)-tagged NAGK accelerated HEK293T cell migration during in vitro wound-healing assays and of neurons during in vitro neurosphere migration and in utero electroporation assays, whereas NAGK knockdown by short hairpin RNA (shRNA) delayed migration. Finally, a small NAGK peptide derived from the NudC interacting domain in in silico molecular docking analysis retarded the migrations of HEK293T and SH-SY5Y cells. These data indicate a functional interaction between NAGK and dynein–NudC–Lis1 complex at the nuclear envelope is required for the regulation of cell migration.

Viscoacoustic migration can significantly compensate for the amplitude loss and phase distortion in migration images computed from highly attenuated data. However, solving the viscoacoustic wave equation requires a significant amount of storage space and computation time, especially for least-squares migration methods. To mitigate this problem, we used acoustic reverse time migration (RTM) instead of viscoacoustic migration to migrate the viscoacoustic data and then we correct the amplitude and phase distortion by hybrid deblurring filters in the image domain. Numerical tests on synthetic and field data demonstrate that acoustic RTM combined with hybrid deblurring filters can compensate for the attenuation effects and produce images with high resolution and balanced amplitudes. This procedure requires less than one-third of the storage space and is [Formula: see text] times faster compared with the viscoacoustic migration, but at the cost of mildly reduced accuracy. Here, [Formula: see text] represents the number of iterations used for least-squares migration method. This method can be extended to 3D migration at even a greater cost saving.

Migration as a weapon sounds like a policy statement by resurgent nationalistic parties (and governments) in the West. However, politics and the human cost aside, what if an adversary (both state and non-state actor) does exploit the current global crisis of mass migration due to globalization, war, and political unrest? This article will look at the ongoing mass migration to the European Union within the wider security context of the so-called hybrid threats and/or ‘grey zone’ tactics. It looks at the various legal categories of migration as how the law can be weaponized as so-called ‘lawfare’ to undermine the existing legal frameworks distinguishing between legal and illegal migration. The authors recognize the possibility that this article will be used as an argument by the political actors involved for their nationalistic and anti-migration politics and policies. Yet, we believe that the potential of abusing the current vacuum for political gains along ideological party lines makes it necessary to provide a wider legal-security focused perspective on mass migration.

Abstract:
The transformation of surface seismic data into a subsurface image can be separated into two components—focusing and positioning. Focusing is associated with ensuring the data from different offsets are contributing constructively to the same event. Positioning involves the transformation of the focused events into a depth image consistent with a given velocity model. In prestack depth migration, both of these operations are achieved simultaneously; however, for 3-D data, the cost is significant. Prestack time migration is much more economical and focuses events well even in the presence of moderate velocity variations, but suffers from mispositioning problems. Hybrid migration is a cost‐effective depth‐imaging approach that uses prestack time migration for focusing; inverse migration for the removal of positioning errors; and poststack depth migration for proper positioning. When lateral velocity changes are moderate, the hybrid technique can generate a depth image that is consistent with a velocity field. For very complex structures that require prestack depth migration, the results of the hybrid technique can be used to create a starting velocity model, thereby reducing the number of iterations for velocity model building.

The concept of Software Defined Networking (SDN) may be a way to face the fast growing computer network infrastructure with its demands and requirements. The concept is attracting the interest of enterprises to expand their respective network infrastructures, but one has to consider the impacts of migrating from an existing network infrastructure to an SDN network. One way that could minimize the impacts is to proceed a soft migration from a traditional IP network to SDN, creating what is so called a heterogeneous network. Instead of fully replacing the network infrastructure and face the impacts of it, the idea of the soft migration is to replace a part of it with an environment of SDN and examine the performance of it. This thesis work will analyze the performance of a network consisting of a traditional IP network combined with SDN. It is essential during this work to identify the differences in performance when having a heterogeneous network in comparison with having a dedicated traditional IP network. Therefore, the questions that will be addressed during this thesis work is to examine how such a heterogeneous network can be designed and measure the performance of it in terms of throughput, jitter and packet losses. By the method of experimentation and the studying of related works of the SDN fundamentals, we hope to achieve our goals with this thesis work, to give us and the reader a clearer insight.

L’originalité de notre apport parmi les recherches sociologiques et anthropologiques roumaines porte sur l’analyse de la relation multidimensionnelle entre la migration et l’habitation rurale, mettant l’accent sur la compréhension du logement comme lieu de rencontre des modèles culturels différents. En effet, la maison doit être analysée comme un produit social et par rapport à la vie sociale et privée de la famille qui y réside. Donc, notre cadre théorique s’appuie sur le croisement entre l’analyse sociologique des processus migratoires et leur expression architecturale et matérielle. La question centrale de la recherche porte sur les continuités et discontinuités - observées par rapport à la tradition - qu’on trouve, après la chute du communisme, dans les habitations des migrants roumains, issus du milieu rural. Pour répondre à cette question, nous avons choisi une approche anthropologique du logement, en menant des enquêtes de terrain, de type qualitatif (auprès de villageois et migrants de village de Marginea), durant les années 2009, 2010 et 2011. On remarque que les nouvelles maisons se présentent comme des formes hybrides, qui articulent les références locales aux éléments nouveaux, apportés par la migration. Ainsi, nous avons introduit deux dimensions essentielles dans l’analyse du concept de la maison du migrant: les «traces du passé» et les «traces de la migration». La première dimension se réfère aux influences des anciennes formes, modèles, pratiques, mentalité etc., alors que la deuxième dimension désigne les éléments nouveaux et les innovations qui ont pénétré dans la conception, la construction et l’utilisation des maisons
The originality of our contribution to the Romanian sociological and anthropological research concerns the analysis of the multidimensional relation between migration and the rural dwelling, emphasizing an understanding of the house as the meeting place of the different cultural models. Indeed, the house must be analyzed as a social product, with regard to the social and private life of the family which dwells there. Thus, our theoretical frame is based on the interplay between the sociological analysis of the migratory processes and their architectural and material expression. The central question of our research concerns the continuities and the discontinuities - observed with regard to the local tradition - which we find, after the fall of the communism regime, in the houses of the Romanian migrants, of rural origin. To answer this question, we chose an anthropological approach to the house, by conducting a qualitative field research (with villagers and migrants of Marginea village), in 2009, 2010 and 2011. We noticed that the new houses appear as hybrid forms, which articulate the local models to the new elements, brought by migration. So, we introduced two essential dimensions into the analysis of the concept of the migrant house: the "traces of the past" and the "traces of the migration". The first dimension refers to the influence of the old forms, models, practices, mentalities etc., while the second dimension indicates the new elements and innovations which penetrated the house design, its construction process and its exploitation
Originalitatea contributiei noastre noastre intre cercetarile sociologice si antropologice romanesti consta in analiza relatiei multidimensionale migratie-locuinta rurala, subliniind intelegerea locuintei migrantilor din tara de origine ca loc de intalnire a diferitelor modele culturale. Intr-adevar, casa trebuie vazuta ca un produs social si in relatie cu viata sociala si privata a familiei ce o locuieste. In consecinta, cadrul teoretic si de analiza imbina analiza sociologica a migratiei internationale cu expresia arhitecturala si materiala a acesteia. Intrebarea centrala a cercetarii priveste continuitatile si discontinuitatile - observate in raport cu modelele de dinainte de 1989 – ce se manifesta, dupa caderea regimului comunist, in proiectarea, realizarea si utilizarea locuintelor migrantilor din mediul rural. Pentru a raspunde la aceasta intrebare, am optat pentru o abordare antropologica a locuintelor migrantilor, realizand un studiu de caz in comuna Marginea, jud. Suceava. Anchetele de teren s-au desfasurat in intervalele iulie – octombrie 2009, iulie-octombrie 2010 si in august 2011. Am remarcat cum locuințele migrantilor se prezinta asemenea unor forme hibride ce combina elementele noi, aduse de migratie (« urmele migratiei »), cu referintele locale, de dinainte de 1989 (« urmele trecutului »). Am introdus astfel doua dimensiuni esentiale in analiza conceptului de locuinta a migrantului in tara de origine: « urmele trecutului » si « urmele migratiei ». The evolution and maturation of Cloud Computing created an opportunity for the emergence of new Cloud applications. High-performance Computing, a complex problem solving class, arises as a new business consumer by taking advantage of the Cloud premises and leaving the expensive datacenter management and difficult grid development. Standing on an advanced maturing phase, today’s Cloud discarded many of its drawbacks, becoming more and more efficient and widespread. Performance enhancements, prices drops due to massification and customizable services on demand triggered an emphasized attention from other markets. HPC, regardless of being a very well established field, traditionally has a narrow frontier concerning its deployment and runs on dedicated datacenters or large grid computing. The problem with common placement is mainly the initial cost and the inability to fully use resources which not all research labs can afford. The main objective of this work was to investigate new technical solutions to allow the deployment of HPC applications on the Cloud, with particular emphasis on the private on-premise resources – the lower end of the chain which reduces costs. The work includes many experiments and analysis to identify obstacles and technology limitations. The feasibility of the objective was tested with new modeling, architecture and several applications migration. The final application integrates a simplified incorporation of both public and private Cloud resources, as well as HPC applications scheduling, deployment and management. It uses a well-defined user role strategy, based on federated authentication and a seamless procedure to daily usage with balanced low cost and performance.
O desenvolvimento e maturação da Computação em Nuvem abriu a janela de oportunidade para o surgimento de novas aplicações na Nuvem. A Computação de Alta Performance, uma classe dedicada à resolução de problemas complexos, surge como um novo consumidor no Mercado ao aproveitar as vantagens inerentes à Nuvem e deixando o dispendioso centro de computação tradicional e o difícil desenvolvimento em grelha. Situando-se num avançado estado de maturação, a Nuvem de hoje deixou para trás muitas das suas limitações, tornando-se cada vez mais eficiente e disseminada. Melhoramentos de performance, baixa de preços devido à massificação e serviços personalizados a pedido despoletaram uma atenção inusitada de outros mercados. A CAP, independentemente de ser uma área extremamente bem estabelecida, tradicionalmente tem uma fronteira estreita em relação à sua implementação. É executada em centros de computação dedicados ou computação em grelha de larga escala. O maior problema com o tipo de instalação habitual é o custo inicial e o não aproveitamento dos recursos a tempo inteiro, fator que nem todos os laboratórios de investigação conseguem suportar. A viabilidade e praticabilidade do objetivo foi testada com inovação em modelos, arquitetura e migração de várias aplicações. A aplicação final integra uma agregação de recursos de Nuvens, públicas e privadas, assim como escalonamento, lançamento e gestão de aplicações CAP. Abstract:
Mincom, a successful Australian software company, markets an enterprise product known as the Mincom Information Management System, or MIMS. MIMS is an integrated suite of modules covering materials, maintenance, financials, and human resources management. MIMS is an on-line transaction processing (OLTP) system, meaning it has special requirements in the areas of pe,jormance and scalability. MIMS consists of approxiniately 16 000 000 lines of code, most of which is written in COBOL. Its basic architecture is 3-tier client/server, utilising a database layer, application logic layer, and a Graphical User Inte,face (GUI). While this architecture has proved successful, Mincom is looking to gradually evolve MIMS into a distributed architecture. COREA is the target distributed framework. The development of an enterprise distributed system is fraught with difficulties. Key technical problems are not yet solved, and Mincom cannot afford the risk and cost involved in rewriting MIMS completely. The only viable approach is to gradually evolve MIMS into the desired architecture using a hybrid system that allows clients to access existing and new functionality. This thesis addresses the design and development of distributed systems, and the evolution of existing legacy systems into this architecture. It details the current MIMS architecture, and explains some of its shortcomings. The desirable characteristics of a new system based on a distributed architecture such as COREA are outlined. A case is established for a gradual migration of the current system via a hybrid system rather than a complete rewrite. Two experimental systems designed to investigate the proposed new architecture are discussed. The conclusion reached from the first, known as Genesis, is that the maturity of CORBA for ente1prise development is not sufficient-12-18 months are estimated to be required for the appropriate level of maturity to be reached. The second system, EGEN, demonstrates how workflow can be integrated into a distributed system. An event-based workflow architecture is demonstrated, and it is explained how a workflow event server can be used to provide workflow services across a hybrid system. EGEN also demonstrates how a middleware gateway can be used to allow COREA clients access to the functionality of the existing MIMS system. Finally, a proposed migration strategy for moving MIMS to a distributed architecture based on COREA is outlined. While developed specifically for MIMS, this strategy is broadly applicable to the migration of any large 3-tier client/server system to a distributed architecture.

Neuronal migration is an essential aspect of nervous system development; improper or incomplete neuronal migration can lead to debilitating disorders. The model organism Caenorhabditis elegans has 302 neurons and is ideal for studying nervous system development. The cytoplasmic adaptor protein, MIG-10, is necessary for the long range anteroposterior migration during embryogenesis of the neurons CAN, ALM, and HSN. Mutations in the mig-10 gene result in incomplete migrations of all three neurons. MIG-10 is a homologue of the vertebrate proteins lamellipodin and RIAM-1, which are involved in directing actin polymerization during axon outgrowth and guidance. RIAM-1 is known to interact with proteins from the Ras GTPase family. The MIG-10 protein has a pleckstrin homology (PH) domain, a Ras-associating (RA) domain, and a proline-rich region. We used a yeast two-hybrid system to investigate which Ras family proteins MIG-10 interacts with. Three isoforms of MIG-10, MIG-10A, MIG-10B, and MIG-10C, as well as the RAPH domain alone, were used as baits. No evidence of interaction was observed for any of the baits used. These results do not reject our hypothesis as the constitutively active Ras clones may need to be used or there may not be a direct interaction between MIG-10 and the Ras family members. We are currently screening a C. elegans cDNA library for interactions with all three isoforms of MIG-10. In the future we plan to investigate how MIG-10 may be involved in the WAVE/SCAR actin nucleation pathway.

Abstract:
This one-year master's thesis investigates the late part of the Middle Neolithic on the island of Gotland. This thesis has been written without the influence of a singular theoretical pespective, and has therefore seen input from the processual, and postprocessual theories. By using several perspectives, an attempt is made to view the material remains used in the most objective manner possible. The specific aim of this thesis is to investigate whether the Mid-Neolithic inhabitants of Gotland were a part of the Corded Ware culture (or as it is called in Sweden, the Battleaxe culture or the Boataxe culture). Most recent literature has concluded that Gotland was never a part of the Battlexe culture, though this thesis has discovered many parallels with the mainland culture, including the production of similar objects and ritual practices. There are indications that the Gotlandic culture also integrated traits from several other coastal regions of the Baltic Sea, something most Battle Axe settlements did not. After investigating all the data that have been linked with the Battleaxe culture, this thesis concludes that the people on the island of Gotland were not fully assimilated to the Battleaxe culture, but were approaching the culture in both a material and ritual aspects. This leaves the conclusion that the Gotlandic culture towards the end of the Middle Neolithic was somewhat of a hybrid.

Abstract:
P4 is a high-level language for programming the data plane of a network switch. These P4-programmable switches come with no pre-defined behavior or protocols, so it is entirely up to the loaded P4 program to define these. This allows the user to exclude any unwanted functionality and to create custom protocols. It also removes the dependence on the switch vendor in terms of both trust and addition of new features. This thesis looks at migration from traditional switches to P4-programmable ones. Since no behavior is included out-of-the-box in the P4 switches, a search is made for open-source P4 projects and the functionality they provide is evaluated. It is found that most link layer functionality can be achieved with them, with the exception being loop prevention by spanning tree protocols. Therefore, one of the projects is extended with an implementation of the Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol based on the IEEE 802.1D-2004 standard. Finally, partial migration of networks to P4 switches and to the Software Defined Networking (SDN) paradigm is studied based on a literature review. Four general approaches and specific architectures for these are found, and it is concluded that such a hybrid network can still benefit from P4 and having a centralized SDN controller.

This book brings about insights and key concepts from the field of transnational migration studies to bear upon the field of organization studies. It expands upon multiscalar global perspective, moving beyond methodological nationalism, and historical global conjuncturesas relevant transnational concepts for studying people and difference in novel ways including agentic, reflexive mobile subjectivities as the new subjects of diversity research that emerge in a ‘post-identitarian’ world. Specifically, the book offers transmigrant, hybrid, and cosmopolitan subjectivities as new the subjects of diversity research. Beyond new subjectivities, mobility ontology requires rethinking the epistemology of multiculturalism, examining inequalities, and redirecting the methodologies adopted to attend to difference. In expanding on these, the book offers new frameworks for the study of people on-the-move and organizations through a mobility ontology that foregrounds movement as the natural order of the social world. It also calls into question the ways existing research paradigms and approaches have potentially replicated the creation of boundaries and borders through implicit assumptions about difference, race/ethnicity and belonging. By shifting the ontological premise upon which the field of organization studies rests, this book provides novel ways of theorizing difference, people and work beyond static epistemologies guiding much of the field.

1. Abstract: Over the past 25 years, vine cacti of the genera Hylocereus and Selenicereus have been introduced into Israel and southern California as new exotic fruit crops. The importance of these crops lies in their high water use efficiency and horticultural potential as exotic fruit crops. Our collaboration focused on the cytological, molecular and evolutionary aspects of vine cacti polyploidization to confront the agricultural challenge of genetic improvement, ultimately to improve success of vine cacti as commercial fruit crop plants. More specifically, we worked on the: 1- Identification of the putative ancestor(s) of the tetraploid H. megalanthus; 2- Determination of the number of origins of H. megalanthus (single vs. multiple origins of polyploidy); 3- Cytogenetic analysis of BC1 and F1 hybrids; 4- Determination of important agricultural traits and the selection of superior hybrids for cultivation. The plant material used in this study comprised interspecific Hylocereus F1 and first backcross (BC1) hybrids, nine Hylocereus species (58 genotypes), nine Selenicereus species (14 genotypes), and four Epiphyllum genotypes. Two BC1 hexaploids (BC-023 and BC-031) were obtained, a high ploidy level that can be explained only by a fertilization event between one unreduced female gamete from the triploid hybrid and a balanced gamete from the pollen donor, the diploid H. monacanthus. These findings are scientific evidence that support the possibility that “hybridization followed by chromosome doubling” could also occur in nature. Cytomixis, the migration of chromatin between adjacent cells through connecting cytoplasmatic channels, was observed in vine cacti hybrids and may thus imply selective DNA elimination in response to the allopolyploidization process. Evidence from plastid and nrDNA internal transcribed spacers (ITS) sequences support the placement of H. megalanthus within a monophyletic Hylocereus group. Furthermore, both plastid and ITS datasets are most consistent with a conclusion that this tetraploid species is an autopolyploid, despite observations that the species appears to be morphologically intermediate between Hylocereus and Selenicereus. Although the possibility of very narrow allopolyploidly (i.e., derivation from parents that are barely diverged from each other such as closely related species in the same genus) cannot be ruled out entirely based on our data (in part due to the unavailability of Hylocereus species considered to be morphologically the closest relatives of H. megalanthus), the possibility of H. megalanthus representing an intergeneric cross (i.e., Hylocereus × Selenicereus) seems extremely unlikely. Interestingly, the process of homogenization of ITS sequences (concerted evolution) is either incomplete or lacking in both Hylocereus and Selenicereus, and the inclusion of several artificial hybrids in the molecular study revealed the potential for biparental plastid inheritance in Hylocereus. The most important agricultural implication of this research project was the information collected for F1 and BC1 hybrids. Specifically, this project concluded with the selection of four superior hybrids in terms of fruit quality and potential yields under extreme high temperatures. These selected hybrids are self-compatible, avoiding the need for hand cross pollination to set fruits, thus reducing manpower costs. We recently offered these hybrids to growers in Israel for prioritized rapid evaluation and characterization.

Abstract:
This report describes the effects of climate change for Finland from the view of comprehensive security. The report examines both direct and indirect climate security risks as well as transition risks related to climate change mitigation. The report is based on previous research and expert interviews. Direct security risks refer to the immediate risks caused by the changing nature of natural hazards. These include the risks to critical infrastructure and energy systems, the logistics system, health and food security. Indirect security risks relate to the potential economic, political and geopolitical impacts of climate change. Climate change can affect global migration, increase conflict risk, and cause social tensions and inequality. Transition risks are related to economic and technological changes in energy transition, as well as political and geopolitical tensions and social problems caused by climate change mitigation policies. Reducing the use of fossil fuels can result in domestic and foreign policy tensions and economic pressure especially in locations dependent on fossil fuels. Political tension can also increase the risks associated with hybrid and information warfare. The security effects of climate change affect all sectors of society and the Finnish comprehensive security model should be utilized in preparing for them. In the short run, the most substantial arising climate change related security risks in Finland are likely to occur through indirect or transition risks. Finland, similar to other wealthy countries, has better technological, economic and institutional conditions to deal with the problems and risks posed by climate change than many other countries. However, this requires political will and focus on risk reduction and management.

The UK government’s Integrated Review of security, defence, development and foreign policy, published in March 2021 alongside a supporting defence command paper, set a new course for UK national security and highlighted opportunities for an innovative approach to international engagement activity. The Integrated Review focused principally on the state threats posed by China’s increasing power and by competitors – including Russia – armed with nuclear, conventional and hybrid capabilities. It also stressed the continuing risks to global security and resilience due to conflict and instability in weakened and failed states. These threats have the potential to increase poverty and inequality, violent extremism, climate degradation and the forced displacement of people, while presenting authoritarian competitors with opportunities to enhance their geopolitical influence. There are moral, security and economic motives to foster durable peace in conflict-prone and weakened regions through a peacebuilding approach that promotes good governance, addresses the root causes of conflict and prevents violence, while denying opportunities to state competitors. The recent withdrawal from Afghanistan serves to emphasize the complexities and potential pitfalls associated with intervention operations in complex, unstable regions. Success in the future will require the full, sustained and coordinated integration of national, allied and regional levers of power underpinned by a sophisticated understanding of the operating environment. The UK armed forces, with their considerable resources and global network, will contribute to this effort through ‘persistent engagement’. This is a new approach to overseas operations below the threshold of conflict, designed as a pre-emptive complement to warfighting. To achieve this, the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) must develop a capability that can operate effectively in weak, unstable and complex regions prone to violent conflict and crises, not least in the regions on the eastern and southern flanks of the Euro-Atlantic area. The first step must be the development of a cohort of military personnel with enhanced, tailored levels of knowledge, skills and experience. Engagement roles must be filled by operators with specialist knowledge, skills and experience forged beyond the mainstream discipline of combat and warfighting. Only then will individuals develop a genuinely sophisticated understanding of complex, politically driven and sensitive operating environments and be able to infuse the design and delivery of international activities with practical wisdom and insight. Engagement personnel need to be equipped with: An inherent understanding of the human and political dimensions of conflict, the underlying drivers such as inequality and scarcity, and the exacerbating factors such as climate change and migration; - A grounding in social sciences and conflict modelling in order to understand complex human terrain; - Regional expertise enabled by language skills, cultural intelligence and human networks; - Familiarity with a diverse range of partners, allies and local actors and their approaches; - Expertise in building partner capacity and applying defence capabilities to deliver stability and peace; - A grasp of emerging artificial intelligence technology as a tool to understand human terrain; - Reach and insight developed through ‘knowledge networks’ of external experts in academia, think-tanks and NGOs. Successful change will be dependent on strong and overt advocacy by the MOD’s senior leadership and a revised set of personnel policies and procedures for this cohort’s selection, education, training, career management, incentivization, sustainability and support.
