SCHUTZMANN, STEFANO. "Towards hybrid sol-gel devices for optoelectronic biosensors." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Roma "Tor Vergata", 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/2108/202687.
Full textEnvironment sensors for the detection of polluting substances in water, earth and atmosphere as well as biosensor devices for the recognition of proteins and enzymes represent a very intriguing topic for both research and industrial applications. In this framework, a very promising alternative is represented by the development of sensors based on optoelectronic technology since they combine high sensitivity, mechanical stability, miniaturization and the possibility of mass-production. In particular, extensive research have been devoted to evanescent-field-based optical waveguide sensors. The operation principle of this kind of devices is based on the interaction between the evanescent field component of a guided optical wave and the monitoring region. The development of optoelectronic devices requires the possibility to design materials with suitable optical properties. In particular, the possibility of changing appropriately the refractive index represents a fundamental step for design and fabrication of real devices. Hybrid organic-inorganic materials synthesized by sol-gel technology seem to be a valid alternative to more traditional methods such as ion exchange or chemical vapor deposition for fabrication of integrated optical devices. Hybrid materials combining organic and inorganic networks allow the design and fabrication of new materials with appropriate features in a simple and economic way. This thesis reported on the design, synthesis and characterization of hybrid sol-gel-based waveguides for possible applications as fluorescence-based optical sensors. Optical characterization has been accomplished using a home-made experimental setup built and optimized by the candidate during the first period of the PhD fellowship. The setup is based on both m-line and Brewster methods and represents a completely non-destructive, low cost and very simple tool for thin film refractive index estimation. Results have shown that the apparatus allows the estimation of refractive index at different wavelengths in the visible and near infrared spectral region for films having thickness from few tens of nanometers to several micrometers. The error in refractive index determination was in the range ±0.001-0.003, depending on wavelength and sample features. Comparison with results obtained by ellipsometric measurements have confirmed the high accuracy and reliability of our setup. Many efforts was dedicated to the synthesis and characterization of different hybrid sol-gel waveguides grown both on silicon and glass substrates. Samples were characterized by refractive index determination and propagation loss measurements using scattered light detection technique. Results have shown the possibility to modulate quite easily the refractive index from 1.45 to about 1.90 playing on the chemical synthesis and on the post-deposition treatments. Propagation loss coefficients in the range 3-10 dB/cm were commonly obtained on our samples, depending on wavelengths, polarization, and mode selected. These values are quite common for planar organic/inorganic sol-gel based waveguides. Waveguides doped with fluorescent molecules were synthesized and characterized showing the possibility to use our structures as active optical devices. The modulation of refractive index of hybrid films using photosensitive molecules was investigated exposing films to different UV light dose. Moreover, first efforts to fabricate channel waveguides exploiting photolithographic techniques were accomplished. Finally, the possibility to use hybrid sol-gel planar waveguides as building blocks for a fluorescence-based optical sensor has been demonstrated performing measurements of fluorescence excited by guided wave evanescent field.

Full textThis dissertation considers packet-switched wireless networks for transmission of variable-rate layered hybrid video streams. Target applications are video streaming and broadcasting services. The work can be divided into two main parts.
In the first part, a novel quality-scalable scheme based on coefficient refinement and encoder quality constraints is developed as a possible extension to the video coding standard H.264. After a technical introduction to the coding tools of H.264 with the main focus on error resilience features, various quality scalability schemes in previous research are reviewed. Based on this discussion, an encoder decoder framework is designed for an arbitrary number of quality layers, hereby also enabling region-of-interest coding. After that, the performance of the new system is exhaustively tested, showing that the bit rate increase typically encountered with scalable hybrid coding schemes is, for certain coding parameters, only small to moderate. The double- and triple-layer constellations of the framework are shown to perform superior to other systems.
The second part considers layered code streams as generated by the scheme of the first part. Various error propagation issues in hybrid streams are discussed, which leads to the definition of a decoder quality constraint and a segmentation of the code stream to transmit. A packetization scheme based on successive source rate consumption is drafted, followed by the formulation of the channel code rate optimization problem for an optimum assignment of available codes to the channel packets. Proper MSE-based error metrics are derived, incorporating the properties of the source signal, a terminate-on-error decoding strategy, error concealment, inter-packet dependencies, and the channel conditions. The Viterbi algorithm is presented as a low-complexity solution to the optimization problem, showing a great adaptivity of the joint source channel coding scheme to the channel conditions. An almost constant image qualiity is achieved, also in mismatch situations, while the overall channel code rate decreases only as little as necessary as the channel quality deteriorates. It is further shown that the variance of code distributions is only small, and that the codes are assigned irregularly to all channel packets.
A double-layer constellation of the framework clearly outperforms other schemes with a substantial margin.

Full textAs renewal interest in building vehicles based on hypersonic technologies begin to emerge again, test ranges anticipating in supporting flight research of these vehicles will face a set of engineering problems. Most fundamentals of these will be to track and gather error free telemetry from the vehicles in flight. The first series of vehicles will likely be reduced-scale models that restrict the locations and geometric shapes of the telemetry antennas. High kinetic heating will further limit antenna design and construction. Consequently, antennas radiation patterns will be sub-optimal, showing lower gains and detrimental nulls. A mobile system designed to address the technical issues above will be described. The use of antenna arrays, spatial diversity and a hybrid tracking system using optical and electronic techniques to obtain error free telemetry in the present of multipath will be presented. System tests results will also be presented.

Full textFilling carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has been considered as an easy approach to synthesize various nanocrystals since the inserted materials are forced to adopt a nearly one-dimensional morphology arising from their very high aspect ratio, especially in the case of single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs) or double-walled CNTs (DWCNTs). Nanocrystals/nanowires of transition metals, especially those with very narrow diameters, are predicted to exhibit peculiar magnetic property differing from the bulk metals. Filling CNTs provides a possible way for the synthesis of such metal nanocrystals/nanowires. There are several methods for filling CNTs including the in situ method, gas phase method, molten phase method, solution method, etc. Among them, molten phase has been very popular for filling various types of nanotubes due to the possibility to reach high filling rates, simplicity and versatility. However, for materials with high melting point such as metals, it is difficult to insert them into CNTs directly. To solve this problem, we also took advantage of the inner cavity of CNTs which not only templates the growth but also acts as a nanoreactor in order to perform chemical reactions. The insertion of materials with high melting point is typically achieved by first filling CNTs with a precursor, and then transforming the precursor into the desired 1D nanostructure by post-treatments. In this thesis, (i) filling DWCNTs with iodine and various halides via the molten phase method was performed and the influence of the relevant physical and chemical properties of the halides on the filling rate was investigated. The role of the redox potential as a main parameter driving the filling efficiency is pointed out, and explained; (ii) peculiar structures of the nanocrystals confined within DWCNTs were imaged by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and corresponding modeling of the observed crystal nanostructures and related TEM images were proposed; (iii) different in situ transformations on the iodide-filled DWCNTs were attempted and the chemical composition of the encapsulated 1D nanocrystals before and after post-filling treatments was systematically identified by means of electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS)

Full textAtrial fibrillation is the most common heart rhythm disease. Due to a lack of understanding in the matter of underlying atrial structures, current treatments are still not satisfying. Recently, with the popularity of deep learning, many segmentation methods based on deep learning have been proposed to analyze atrial structures, especially from late gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging. However, two problems still occur: 1) segmentation results include the atrial-like background; 2) boundaries are very hard to segment. Most segmentation approaches design a specific network that mainly focuses on the regions, to the detriment of the boundaries. Therefore, in this dissertation, we propose two different methods to segment the heart, one two-stage and one end-to-end trainable method. And then, for evaluating the fibrosis degree, we also proposed two methods, one is to combine deep learning with morphology, and the other is to use deep learning directly. Finally, the efficiency of the proposed approach is verified on some public datasets

Masoudi, Pedram. "Application of hybrid uncertainty-clustering approach in pre-processing well-logs." Thesis, Rennes 1, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017REN1S023/document.
Full textIn the subsurface geology, characterization of geological beds by well-logs is an uncertain task. The thesis mainly concerns studying vertical resolution of well-logs (question 1). In the second stage, fuzzy arithmetic is applied to experimental petrophysical relations to project the uncertainty range of the inputs to the outputs, here irreducible water saturation and permeability (question 2). Regarding the first question, the logging mechanism is modelled by fuzzy membership functions. Vertical resolution of membership function (VRmf) is larger than spacing and sampling rate. Due to volumetric mechanism of logging, volumetric Nyquist frequency is proposed. Developing a geometric simulator for generating synthetic-logs of a single thin-bed enabled us analysing sensitivity of the well-logs to the presence of a thin-bed. Regression-based relations between ideal-logs (simulator inputs) and synthetic-logs (simulator outputs) are used as deconvolution relations for removing shoulder-bed effect of thin-beds from GR, RHOB and NPHI well-logs. NPHI deconvolution relation is applied to a real case where the core porosity of a thin-bed is 8.4%. The NPHI well-log is 3.8%, and the deconvolved NPHI is 11.7%. Since it is not reasonable that the core porosity (effective porosity) be higher than the NPHI (total porosity), the deconvolved NPHI is more accurate than the NPHI well-log. It reveals that the shoulder-bed effect is reduced in this case. The thickness of the same thin-bed was also estimated to be 13±7.5 cm, which is compatible with the thickness of the thin-bed in the core box (<25 cm). Usually, in situ thickness is less than the thickness of the core boxes, since at the earth surface, there is no overburden pressure, also the cores are weathered. Dempster-Shafer Theory (DST) was used to create well-log uncertainty range. While the VRmf of the well-logs is more than 60 cm, the VRmf of the belief and plausibility functions (boundaries of the uncertainty range) would be about 15 cm. So, the VRmf is improved, while the certainty of the well-log value is lost. In comparison with geometric method, DST-based algorithm resulted in a smaller uncertainty range of GR, RHOB and NPHI logs by 100%, 71% and 66%, respectively. In the next step, cluster analysis is applied to NPHI, RHOB and DT for the purpose of providing cluster-based uncertainty range. Then, NPHI is calibrated by core porosity value in each cluster, showing low √MSE compared to the five conventional porosity estimation models (at least 33% of improvement in √MSE). Then, fuzzy arithmetic is applied to calculate fuzzy numbers of irreducible water saturation and permeability. Fuzzy number of irreducible water saturation provides better (less overestimation) results than the crisp estimation. It is found that when the cluster interval of porosity is not compatible with the core porosity, the permeability fuzzy numbers are not valid, e.g. in well#4. Finally, in the possibilistic approach (the fuzzy theory), by calibrating α-cut, the right uncertainty interval could be achieved, concerning the scale of the study

Historically, land use planning has treated industrial land uses either antagonistically or ambivalently. Traditional zoning approaches have restricted, regulated, spatially isolated, and pushed industrial land to the periphery of cities, resulting in a significant loss of urban industrial land across American cities. But as the United States experiences a manufacturing renaissance and cities begin to recognize the value of centrally located industrial land in its contribution to the regional economy, planners are grappling with the issue of how best to secure these viable but vulnerable sites of employment and production. Advanced technologies that are changing the nature of manufacturing and logistics present an exciting opportunity and potential solution: the industrial mixed-use zone. This thesis explores the emerging land use tool of industrial-mixed use zoning, using Los Angeles as a case study.
The intent of the industrial mixed-use zone, which permits non-industrial uses, to varying degrees of intensities, in otherwise industrial districts, is to protect central locations for industrial operations when market forces might otherwise price them out. On the one hand, the zone can impede industrial business displacement through offering protection to compatible lighter industrial uses in transitioning neighborhoods. In doing so, it aims to create a live/work urban district in which several planning agendas are met and balanced, providing for industrial employment alongside affordable housing and public realm improvements. On the other hand, without strict use definitions, mix requirements or consistent regulation, the industrial mixed-use zone risks both accelerating the land use conversion process, operating as residential and commercial upzoning, and gentrifying industrial districts toward more artisanal and boutique industrial operations.
In 2019, the Los Angeles Department of City Planning will rezone industrial land in Downtown Los Angeles under a new zoning classification: hybrid-industrial. Through an exploration of Los Angeles' industrial land use policies, a process tracing of the evolution of hybrid-industrial zoning, and a dissection of the zoning ordinance's text, this thesis demonstrates the trade-offs associated with a mixed-use district and the potential challenges and pitfalls of implementation.

Full textSurface plasmon polariton (SPP) can confine light on subwavelength dimensions. Since they are not diffraction limited, they are of great interest for addressing and controlling optical nanosources. For example, a metal nanowire defines 1D plasmonic waveguide with a great potential for either addressing or coupling quantum emitters. Therefore, SPP opens great opportunities for integrated optical applications. However, SPP suffer from ohmic losses that jeopardize the applications of plasmonic components. In this context, we study the possibilities provided by an hybrid plasmonic-photonicstructure to couple efficiently an emitter to a fiber mode. Such a structure paves the way for fibered single photon nanosource or high resolution optical probe. In this thesis manuscript, we first study the coupling rate between a fluorescent molecule and a metallic nanowire thanks to Green’s dyad formalism. This leads us to distinguish the different relaxation channels and the enhancement of the energy transferred into the plasmonic guided mode by optimizing the shape of the guide (crystalline nano-wire,slow modes). Then, we investigate the energy propagation in a metal coated taperedoptical fiber. Finally, we achieve an optimal configuration for which more than 50% of the energy emitted by a quantum emitter laid on a substrat is transferred into an optical fiber

A literature review describes main physical processes occurring during Laser-arc combination and shows main achievements and problematics met during process analysis. Physical processes were studied during joining of very thick materials. Two configurations were used. The first configuration is welding of Superduplex steel in one pass by Laser and arc that are far apart. The second configuration is multipass welding of 18MND5 steel, where defocused Laser beam intercepts arc plasma. With a help of experiment’s design, fast video imaging, electric signals recording, determination of temperature and workpiece distortion, were explained the role of each thermal source and influence of their combination on arc behaviour, molten pool creation, metallic drop transfer evaluation and heat distribution into welded plates. The relationships between electric signals and arc geometry, bath dimensions and heat distribution have been analyzed at various time scales. Thermal analysis, presented in this work, shows that hypothesis of stationarity, which is commonly used in numerical modelling, is true only during a short welding period and for a given weld length. Macrographic analysis shows effect of input parameters variation on weld’s structure and geometry

Full textAssembly operations of aerostructures are nowadays planned using the Digital Mock Up of the considered products. To allow a good realization of the aforementioned operations, the geometry of the physical product must remain as faithful as possible to the reference geometry contained in the Digital Mock Up. Because of the complexity of the considered products, unanticipated geometrical deviations may however appear. These geometrical deviations lead to longer cycle times and higher assembly costs. The increasing integration of data processing system gives new prospects on how to organize production systems. These prospects include the possibility to optimize the manufacturing and assembly operations in real time thanks to the use of digital twins of the manufactured products. In this work, we propose the implementation of a geometrical digital twin. This digital twin is capable of mirroring the geometry of the physical product being assembled and optimizing the geometry of some components remaining to be assembled. With this in mind, the initial Digital Mock Up is updated in order to obtain a hybrid representation of the product. This representation includes the different states of the components, which are called as-designed, as-built and interface. The as-built components are more particularly updated in order to mirror the geometry of the physical product being assembled. A method using digitized data is proposed. From there, the geometry of interface components is updated so that the final product complies with the functional requirements which were defined. A method is also proposed for this purpose. The feasibility of the approach as well as the proposed tools is evaluated through two application cases, one of which is directly representative of the industrial context of the works. The obtained results allow to consider enriching the proposed approach by considering non-geometrical constraints in order to optimize assembly operations

Pereira, Miguel Ramos. "Time diversity solutions to cope with lost packets." Doctoral thesis, Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/9368.
Full textModern broadband wireless systems require high throughputs and can also have very high Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirements, namely small error rates and short delays. A high spectral efficiency is needed to meet these requirements. Lost packets, either due to errors or collisions, are usually discarded and need to be retransmitted, leading to performance degradation. An alternative to simple retransmission that can improve both power and spectral efficiency is to combine the signals associated to different transmission attempts. This thesis analyses two time diversity approaches to cope with lost packets that are relatively similar at physical layer but handle different packet loss causes. The first is a lowcomplexity Diversity-Combining (DC) Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) scheme employed in a Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) architecture, adapted for channels dedicated to a single user. The second is a Network-assisted Diversity Multiple Access (NDMA) scheme, which is a multi-packet detection approach able to separate multiple mobile terminals transmitting simultaneously in one slot using temporal diversity. This thesis combines these techniques with Single Carrier with Frequency Division Equalizer (SC-FDE) systems, which are widely recognized as the best candidates for the uplink of future broadband wireless systems. It proposes a new NDMA scheme capable of handling more Mobile Terminals (MTs) than the user separation capacity of the receiver. This thesis also proposes a set of analytical tools that can be used to analyse and optimize the use of these two systems. These tools are then employed to compare both approaches in terms of error rate, throughput and delay performances, and taking the implementation complexity into consideration. Finally, it is shown that both approaches represent viable solutions for future broadband wireless communications complementing each other.

Full textSpot welding and adhesive bonding are widely used in joining of sheet metals, such as assembling of car body-in-white. Recently, spot weld and adhesive are combined to make weld bonded joint, which is employed to join Advanced High Strength Steel to improve the stiffness and crashworthiness of car body. In industry, the assessment of designing prior to prototype requires reliable constitutive models in terms of the prediction of the mechanical behaviors. The FE model of weld bonded joint is a new challenge as it should combine the models of spot welding and the models of adhesive. This thesis focuses on the modeling of weld bonded joint by DP600 steel and structural adhesive SikaPower®-498. The model of weld bonded joint consists of solid model and simplified model. The former is devoted to predict the behavior of weld bonded joint on small-scale specimen: KS2 and lap-shear. The latter can be used to predict the performance of large components with acceptable computational cost. As regards solid model, spot welded joint and adhesive bonded joint behaviors are separately identified by KS2 specimen under different loading path. The inhomogeneities in fusion zone and heat affected zone of spot weld are taken into account via the scaling of the flow stress of base metal. The scaling factors are calibrated by inverse identification. Gurson model is used to predict ductile fracture in heat affected zone and base metal while cohesive zone model is employed to simulate quasi-brittle fracture in the interface of fusion zone. The parameters of cohesive zone model are identified by the J-integral at the notch tip of spot weld crack. Cohesive zone elements with traction-separation-laws are also used to predict adhesive debonding. Model parameters are calibrated by Double Cantilevered Beam and End Notched Flexure specimens, corresponding to Mode-I and Mode-II fracture respectively. The model developed for spot weld is associated with adhesive model to predict weld bonded joint. As regards simplified model, connector elements are employed to predict the damage of spot weld. The parameters of connector element are identified by KS2 tests under different loading paths. Finally, the simplified model of spot welding, adhesive bonding, and weld-bonding are validated by T-joint which can represent the B-pillar of car body

Full textThe objective of this work is to implement optimization algorithms for the identification of the mechanical behavior of materials. The tools developed here are intended to automatic search of mechanical parameters that represent variables in a constitutive law implemented in Finite Element (FE) models. The advantage of the implemented tools is the reduction of computational time needed to solve the identification problem. The experimental database includes a variety of mechanical responses in bending and instrumented indentation that are used for the identification the behavior of a biocomposite and a variety of metals. Several optimization approaches are developed in the work including deterministic, stochastic and hybrid methods. These methods are evaluated in terms of efficiency; calculation costs and accuracy. The coupling FE-optimization tool proved to be effective and essential to predict the behavior of the studied materials, especially for instrument indentation

Full textThe excessive use of roads can cause many adverse effects including pollution, insecurity and congestion. The available short-term solution is the implementation of traffic management systems which optimize the flow and reduce congestion without needing additional infrastructures. In this context, we proposed a new formalism, called Triangular Batches Petri Nets (Triangular BPN), which combines modeling and simulation of traffic in mesoscopic level as a discrete event system. The Triangular BPN describing the overall characteristics of the road traffic such as flow, density, speed by representing a new triangular relation flow-density. This relation implies the modification of batches dynamic, which is now used to represent the two road traffic states : fluid and congested, as well as the three behaviors :free, congestion and decongestion. The calculation of the instantaneous firing flows is achieved by adding a constraint that takes into account the state and behavior of batches. A set of controlled events integrated to the Triangular BPN, that allow the variation of the maximum speed of batch place and the maximum flow of batch and continuous transition. These controlled events used to model the control strategies, such as variable speed limit (VSL). All these theoretical contributions implemented in a software that is called SimuleauTri and used to study a motorway portions from real data. The simulation results are close to the measurements on the ground and show the pertinence of Triangular BPN

Full textThesis objectives are to develop a method to construct adaptive energy management strategy for regular driving patterns. The scope is a hybrid bus in a series configuration, with several kilometres of electric driving range. The first step of this study tries to specify the optimal distribution of requested power by the driver between the two sources, the energy storage device (the battery) and the electric generator (an internal combustion engine linked to an alternator). With this aim, the optimisation problem was formalised by using simplified models of the various components. Then, it was solved by the Pontryaguine maximum principle. The result was integrated in the vehicle control in an optimal control mappings form, dependent on a unique parameter K. Moreover, an adaptation was proposed to obtain energy management strategies that can be implemented on-line. In a second step, control was adapted to develop energy management strategy for regular driving pat terns. A three level control was defined from the battery state of charge. The first level, that immediately results from the previous work, corresponds to the instantaneous control. Its parameterisation with K allows the local supervision (the second level) to follow a curve of desired state of charge. In the last level, this curve of desired state of charge is learnt from the a priori recognition of the followed driving pat tern. After the driving pattern execution, the obtained realisation is evaluated and possibly integrated in the knowledge base according to its reproducibility degree. Finally, the adaptive energy management strategy was validated by a Matlab/Simulink model applied to a test campaign acquired with a bus in normal operation conditions
