Wheeler, Harold William. "The reliability and validity of ipsative and normative forms of the Hutchins Behavior Inventory." Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/77787.

Full text
Abstract:
The current trend among theorists in counseling and psychotherapy is toward the development of metatheoretical models that can be used to organize, systematically and comprehensively, existing theories and techniques within the discipline. Some models also provide behavior adaptation guidelines for practitioners who wish to adapt their behavior to client behavior patterns. Hutchins created the metatheoretical TFA System to accomplish the above goals. He also created the Hutchins Behavior Inventory (HBI) to complement the TFA System. The HBI purportedly measures the thinking, feeling, and acting dimensions of behavior upon which the TFA System is built; it thus enables a practitioner to assess the unique, situationally specific, TFA behavior pattern of a client. At the time of this study, the only evidence concerning the measurement properties of the HBI was for a form that produces ipsative scores (the HBI-I) . But ipsative scores possess inherent psychometric properties that cause problems when they are subjected to certain types of statistical analyses. Thus, in this study, a normative form of the HBI (the HBI-N) was designed. The measurement properties of the HBI-I and HBI-N were then investigated and compared. Reliability was investigated using test-retest and internal consistency procedures. Construct-related validity was investigated using four procedures: internal consistency analysis of HBI-N scores; factor analysis of the items comprising the scales of the HBI-N; an analysis of a multitrait-multimethod validity matrix containing scores from the HBI-I, HBI-N, Strong Campbell Interest Inventory (SCII), and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI); and a factorial validity analysis of scores from the HBI-N, SCII, and MBTI. Results indicated that the HBI-I possesses a high degree of reliability. Prior evidence of content-related validity suggested that the three constructs measured by the HBI are the thinking, feeling, and acting dimensions of behavior hypothesized by Hutchins. Some of the construct-related validity results obtained in this study supported this conclusion, while the main body of results supported the more limited conclusion that the HBI scales measure different, yet to be more clearly identified, constructs. Based on the evidence in this study, the HBI-I seems appropriate for research and clinical use.

Whalin, Laura. "Pair housing of dairy calves in modified individual calf hutches : an on-farm demonstration." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/62825.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this study was to determine if pair housing using a modified calf hutch on a commercial dairy farm would provide similar benefits to those previously described in research settings. Despite many benefits (e.g. improved weight gain and reduced fearfulness) of housing calves in small groups, individual calf hutches are still common in North America. This study took place on a commercial farm in the lower Fraser Valley region of British Columbia from May to December 2016. A week after birth, calves were randomly assigned to individual (n = 14) or paired (n = 8 pairs) hutches. Our modified pair hutch consisted of 2 individual hutches placed next to each other with both calves having access to both hutches and a common run. Calves were fed milk 2/day (d) using a nipple bottle, 6 Litres (L)/d from d 1 to d 7, 10 L/d from d 8 to d 35, and 6 L/d until d 60 (weaning). Ad libitum access to calf starter (solid food) and water was offered throughout the experiment. Feed intake was measured weekly until calves were 67 ± 5 d old. Body weight (BW) and health measures were recorded weekly until the calves were 88 d old. Calves were exposed to a novel food test at 60 d; the amount of food consumed in 30 minutes, and the latency to approach the novel food was measured. Pair housed calves ate more starter (0.89 (0.72 - 1.08) vs. 0.48 (0.42 - 0.56) kg/d; geometrical mean (confidence interval)) than individually housed calves. Pair housed calves also ate almost 3 times more food during the novel food test (154.13 ± 26.85 vs. 57.84 ± 19.55 g). There was no difference in BW or in the latency to approach the novel food. In conclusion, joining adjacent hutches is an option for pair housing that results in reduced fearfulness and increased solid food intake relative to individual hutches.

Master’s thesis analyses what victims of the Soviet reality are ironized in the Lithuanian and Czech novels written within 1987-1989. Research material and sources - Milan Kundera’s novel Nepakeliama būties lengvybė (The Unbearable Lightness of Being, 1987) and Ričardas Gavelis’ novel Vilniaus pokeris (Vilnius Poker, 1989), both of which depict the Soviet reality. The choice of novels was determined by plot difference and common political situation. The theoretical part of the paper presents the theory of the possibility of ironization and irony functions. The research part of the paper analyses ironized victims of the Soviet reality in Kundera’s novel Nepakeliama būties lengvybė and Gavelis’ novel Vilniaus pokeris. The paper reveals that different victims of the Soviet reality are ironized in the novels. The Soviet reality in Kundera’s novel is ironized through the choice of depicting life and existence, life and objective reality as irony victims. Each character tries to answer the following questions: whether what is happening in the Soviet reality is correct? Whether betrayal, prison, lie and cheapness are the things which should really prevail in the world? The concept of culture is presented differently in Kundera’s novel: a) culture promotes human maturity and reflects settled values; b) culture is a reflection of the change of values and the way of rebellion against the Soviet reality. The Soviet reality in Gavelis novel is ironized through the choice of cultural... [to full text]

Abstract:
This essay presents an analysis of the construction of characters, the representations of power and the development of metafictional writing through a discussion of seven Mexican novels published in the nineties. The essay utilizes the theoretical advances of Roland Barthes and Philippe Hamon in regards to semiological analysis of characters and Gérard Genette’s modes of narrative representation to analyze El disparo de argón, Huatulqueños, La lotería de San Jorge, Una de dos, Salón de belleza, Un asesino solitario y En busca de Klingsor. Metafictional writing was looked at using the theoretical lens of not only Genette, but also Linda Hutcheon and Patricia Waugh. In conclusion, narrators, characters and setting are constructed by means of techniques like hyperbole or comparison. In addition, landscape comes to function as another character in the story, creating a metaphysical space that reflects history. When speaking of power, there are two identifiable types of characters: vulnerable creatures with an ephemeral authority and invisible, inhumane powers that patrol and decide characters’ destinies. The first group eventually acquires the same physical characteristics and attitudes, while the invisible powers correspond to figures like Fate, Chance, God or the Devil. The representations of power fulfill a series of similar roles. Each of the seven novels studied in this essay uses techniques which emphasize the narrator’s own awareness of the act of writing. The analysis of the mise en abyme, metalepsis and transtextuality in the narrative allows for a systematic determination and evaluation of the effectiveness of metafiction

Abstract:
Tema blir ironi, upålitelighet, subjektivitet, karakterengasjement og kronologi. Anvendte teoretikere inkluderer Linda Hutcheon, Sarah Kozloff, Thomas Elsaesser, Gerard Genette, Seymour Chatman, André Bazin, Murray Smith og Lars Thomas Braaten.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the forces that affect subjectivity in two novels by the author Philip K. Dick, Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said and The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch. The close reading of these two novels makes use of postmodernist theory as its theoretical foundation. In these works, stable subjects are fractured through a series of disconcerting incidents originating in a “reality shift,” an event that sees the seemingly solid state of Dick’s speculative future worlds collapse. Split into three sections, this paper first positions Dick within a postmodernist tradition developed mainly by Lyotard, Hutcheon, and Baudrillard, supported by critics such as Sim, Malpas, and Kellner, among others. It then defines the reality shift and its underlying causes, three types of science fictional drugs across the two novels: Can-D, Chew-Z, and KR-3. Finally, this essay examines the full extent of Dick’s inquiry into subjectivity by exploring the metamorphoses the subjects of his novels endure.

Fanning, Sarah Elizabeth. "Changing fictions of masculinity : adaptations of Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, 1939-2009." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/8524.

Abstract:
The discursive and critical positions of the ‘classic’ nineteenth-century novel, particularly the woman’s novel, in the field of adaptation studies have been dominated by long-standing concerns about textual fidelity and the generic processes of the text-screen transfer. The sociocultural patterns of adaptation criticism have also been largely ensconced in representations of literary women on screen. Taking a decisive twist from tradition, this thesis traces the evolution of representations of masculinity in the malleable characters of Rochester and Heathcliff in film and television adaptations of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre and Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights between 1939 and 2009. Concepts of masculinity have been a neglected area of enquiry in studies of the ‘classic’ novel on screen. Adaptations of the Brontës’ novels, as well as the adapted novels of other ‘classic’ women authors such as Jane Austen, George Eliot and Elizabeth Gaskell, increasingly foreground male character in traditionally female-oriented narratives or narratives whose primary protagonist is female. This thesis brings together industrial histories, textual frames and sociocultural influences that form the wider contexts of the adaptations to demonstrate how male characterisation and different representations of masculinity are reformulated and foregrounded through three different adaptive histories of the narratives of Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. Through the contours of the film and television industries, the application of text and context analysis, and wider sociocultural considerations of each period an understanding of how Rochester and Heathcliff have been transmuted and centralised within the adaptive history of the Brontë novel.

Abstract:
The master thesis discusses the novel Spas by Ivan Matoušek published in 2001. The description of the structure and narrative time of the novel is followed by a characterization of the ironic self-conscious narrator and his relationship to the fictional world and the main character. The interpretation is partly inspired by a theoretical paper on irony by Vladimir Jankélévitch, which is compared with Paul de Man's concept of irony. The thesis also refers to Linda Hutcheon's theory of self- reflexivity and metafiction and employs the concept of mise en abyme.
