We tested the hypothesis that hunters using decoys disproportionately shot ducks in poor condition. We compared weights of 316 hunter-shot mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) with those of 156 mallards we collected by jump or pass shooting at a roost. Data were subdivided by age, sex, and sampling period. In support of the hypothesis, in 11 of 12 comparisons, hunter-shot ducks weighed less than ducks collected at the roost and those differences were significant for five of the seven largest samples. Also consistent with the hypothesis, weights of hunter-shot birds were less variable than weights of birds collected at the roost in 9 of 12 comparisons. Through the fall collection period, the mean weight of ducks shot by hunters remained constant, while the weight of ducks sampled at the roost increased by 5.4%. Our results support the argument that caution must be exercised when using data from hunter-shot waterfowl for management programs based on band-recovery analysis or for any other purpose for which a condition bias could influence the interpretation of those data.

In November 1834, Mary Robinson Hunter sailed to Rio de Janeiro with her husband William, a prominent Newport lawyer and newly appointed chargé d'affaires to the Imperial Court, and five of their six children. President Andrew Jackson had named Hunter to the post in June 1834 on the recommendation of their son, William, a clerk with the State Department. The Hunters had experienced financial difficulties over the years, and a diplomatic assignment offered them a steady income, prestige, and a unique travel opportunity.The experience of living in a Latin and tropical culture inspired Mary Hunter to record her impressions in six diaries which she kept during a residence of fourteen years. These journals are part of a larger collection of Hunter family papers that are located in the Newport (RI) Historical Society. The volumes were carefully scanned by her daughter, Elizabeth Hunter Birckhead, who crossed out passages which shed light on family quarrels; they were ultimately deposited by her great granddaughter, Anna Dunn, in 1945. These diaries, written in medium sized script, in brown ink and a firm hand, are thoroughly legible and in good condition, given their age. They serve as the main source for her memories of life in Brazil, since her letters to female friends in Newport do not survive.

Stone Age bone and antler implements are an essential study material, as they contain important information on hunter-gatherer tool making technology, dynamics in hunted animal species, choices of raw materials and much more. Some specimens have unique engravings and incisions on their surface, enabling the studies of the decoration patterns. Moreover, organic finds can be dated by radiocarbon, allowing to approach osseous technologies from a chronological aspect. The Early and Middle Holocene sites containing hunter-gatherer bone and antler implements in Lithuanian coastal area have been discovered and investigated in the last century. The Middle Holocene osseous collection, however, has been studied only recently, shedding light on the manufacturing techniques and chronology of the tools. This paper summarizes the combination of technological, radiocarbon and decoration data of osseous implements found in Palanga and Smeltė sites, as well as the single finds (ca. 6000–3800 cal BC) discovered along the coast of Lithuania.

The noted Provencal antiquarian Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc (1580-1637), perhaps the most dedicated of an international circle of acquaintances studying and collecting classical antiquities in the early seventeenth century, took an especially keen interest in ancient gems. With his friend, the painter Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), he planned an extensive publication on the subject that unfortunately never saw completion. Although Peiresc focused most of his attention on collecting Roman gems portraying classical iconography, he was also intrigued by the enigmatic series of magical gems—as were many others in the Renaissance, who considered the gems to be the products of early Gnostic heretics. A correspondence between Peiresc and Rubens in 1623, frequently cited in the modern literature, discusses the putative meaning of an amulet in Rubens's collection depicting a bell-shaped object thought to represent the “divine womb.” The gem is a Renaissance forgery based on genuine ancient examples; the concurrent—and correct—identification of this puzzling type as a uterus, however, contrasts markedly with the fanciful interpretations later fashionable in the nineteenth century.

Summary ‘First contact’ artefacts collected from aboriginal peoples by the early European explorers are now valuable in providing the only direct evidence for recent ‘Stone Age’ technologies which no longer exist. During the J770's Dr William Hunter collected many such artefacts for his private museum; most originated in the Pacific and in North America and had been collected by people who sailed with Captain James Cook. Since 1978 it has been possible to re-identify most of this early ethnographical material and to separate itfrom later acquisitions. To emphasise the archaeological relevance of this examples are described here from 18th century hunter-gatherer peoples (the Indians of Tierra delFuego, theNootka of British Columbia and the Eskimos of Alaska) and from stone-using farmers (the Maoris of New Zealand and the islanders of Hawaii). A list of the surviving early collection is given in microfiche.

In the archaeological sites of hunter-gatherer societies in Patagonia, carbonized woody plant macro-remains are the most frequent and ubiquitous of the archaeobotanical record. For this reason, it is essential to create a reference collection that allows a correct identification and interpretation of anthracological remains and to infer collection and management practices. The objective of this work is to present the reference collection of woods potentially used by hunter-gatherer societies of the southern coast of Patagonia and the island of Tierra del Fuego. In addition, to create dichotomous keys and to apply the results obtained to the identification of archaeological charcoals from two archaeological sites of the late Holocene of the southern Atlantic coast of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego (Palo Alto and CSP2017). The importance of this work is due to the few anatomical descriptions for many of the species of the Atlantic coast of Patagonia, especially for taxa that do not have commercial use.

The Hunterian Museum at The Royal College of Surgeons of England contains approximately 3,500 specimens of human and comparative anatomy and pathology collected by the surgeon, John Hunter (1728–1793). A significant part of the collection comprises pathological specimens. These include specimens removed during surgery or as incidental findings from anonymous bodies being dissected during anatomical teaching. However, the majority comes from the bodies of patients on which Hunter performed post-mortem examinations. These include patients at St George's Hospital, where Hunter worked as a surgeon from 1768 until his death. A surprising number also come from the bodies of private patients. These were presumably removed with consent, at autopsies that would have taken place in the patient's own home and often with the patient's family or friends present.

Enrique Stanko Vráz (1860–1932) was a multifaceted individual known for his roles as a traveller, photographer, hunter, and collector of natural history specimens and artifacts from non-European cultures. While travelling through equatorial South America up the Amazon River from 1892 to 1893, he amassed a remarkable collection of four hundred ethnographic artifacts from two dozen groups of Indigenous peoples. More than one hundred and thirty years after the acquisition of this collection by the Náprstek Museum, the first part of the collection is published – a collection of feather ornaments. Particular attention is paid to the circumstances of the acquisition of the objects from the Indigenous peoples, their use by the ethnic groups visited, their transport to Europe and their further handling. The inspirational sources of E. S. Vráz’s ideas, which were also reflected in his contact with the Indigenous people and his collecting activities, are briefly presented.

Traditionally, archaeologists have used excavation data from Pennsylvania rockshelters to establish local and regional chronologies; however, these data sets do not lend themselves to behavioral or formational interpretations due to the scale of recovery resolution used. Behaviorally indicative evidence is apparent in contiguous block excavations using analytic units measuring 50 cm × 50 cm × 5 cm for lot collection. At least three specific behaviors—hunting gear maintenance, bone processing, and activity area maintenance—can be recovered from analytic units that result in structured spatial patterning that goes undetected at 1 m collection resolution. Behaviors universal to hunter-gatherers are indicated by the distributions of small artifacts (< 1 cm) of various classes. A current challenge in the discipline of archaeology is relating behavioral theory to the interpretation of structured remains of prehistoric hunter-gatherer occupations. This research highlights these behaviors and the relevant literature pertaining to their archaeological spatial signatures.

This research describes the form of metaphor in the poetry collection Mata Pengburu by Mahdi Idris. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The data source in this research is the poetry collection Mata Pengburu by Mahdi Idris. The data used is an array containing metaphors in the poetry collection Mata Pengburu by Mahdi Idris. The technique for collecting data is using reading techniques and note-taking techniques by marking parts of the lines containing metaphors in the poetry collection Eye of the Hunter by Mahdi Idris. The research results show that there are four forms of metaphor in the poetry collection Mata Pengburu by Mahdi Idris, namely anthropomorphic metaphor, animal metaphor, concrete to abstract metaphor, and synaesthetic metaphor. Researchers found 44 data contained in the poetry collection Mata Pengburu by Mahdi Idris regarding metaphor forms which were grouped into 4 sections, namely 29 anthropomorphic metaphor data, 7 animal metaphor data, 7 concrete to abstract metaphor data, and 1 synaesthetic metaphor data. Of the four metaphors, anthropomorphic metaphors often appear in the poetry collection Mata Pengburu by Mahdi Idris.

All the life forms have fundamental right to live in this universe. Human beings have duties, rights, and responsibilities towards the non-humans, and natural world. By not having a systematic and comprehensive account regarding the relationship between humans and the natural world, human beings are denying the importance of the life forms of other creatures in the world. Hence, the present research attempts to analyze the biocentric relationship of human beings with nature and its stewardship by being aware and knowledgeable of the world around them and protecting the world species. The study further argues the cooperative mechanism and symbiotic relationship between nature and human beings in this natural domain with reference to Jewett’s protagonist, Sylvia, who represents the symbol of mother earth by saving White Heron from the hunter. She restricts the Hunter to mastery over it. In addition, the work encompasses the conflict of nature with civilization by portraying the relationship of Sylvia, who preserves nature, from a foreigner, the Hunter who is concomitant with the danger of civilization. The Hunter who tracks the White Heron is from the city and hence stained by civilizations, sees nature is a place to exploit and desires the White Heron as another piece of his collection. In this sense, Sylvia represents herself true lover and preserver of the natural world and the Hunter is considered in complete opposition to the tranquility of the woodland.

AbstractCharles Byrne was an eighteenth-century celebrity “Irish giant” who requested burial upon nearing death, but whose corpse was procured against his wishes by the surgeon John Hunter. Hunter reduced Byrne's corpse to its skeleton and exhibited it as the centerpiece of his vast anatomical collection. It has since remained on display in the Hunterian Museum, London. In 2011 it was announced that research conducted on the skeleton's DNA has revealed that several Northern Irish families share a common ancestry with Byrne. This article considers the legal issues raised by Byrne's story. The results of fieldwork undertaken by the author in Byrne's native townland are also discussed, where folk tradition suggests that Byrne wished to be buried foremost at a local site remembered today as “the Giant's Grave.”

Bone points of two types, the one thin and poisoned and the other robust and not poisoned, are examined in this study of impact fractures. The bone points seem to have had similar experiences to stone points, producing fractures of a similar kind. Most of the fractures in the historical collection examined were caused by impacts. However, this early twentieth-century collection is not thought to be representative of contemporary fracture frequencies that occurred in hunting.

Recent collection efforts in the upper Campanian (∼76-73.5 Ma) Fruitland and Kirtland formations of northwestern New Mexico have significantly increased the taxonomic diversity of lizards in this historically poorly understood squamate assemblage. New lizard specimens from the “Hunter Wash Local Fauna” of the upper Fruitland and lower Kirtland formations include: (1) new specimens referable to Chamopsiidae; (2) new material belonging to Scincomorpha, (3) new material belonging to Anguidae; and (4) the first reported predatory lizard (Platynota) material from the Campanian of New Mexico. The increase in lizard diversity in the “Hunter Wash Local Fauna” expands our understanding of Late Cretaceous squamate taxonomy, distribution, and diversity in the Western Interior of North America (Laramidia). Collectively, the described specimens represent family-level diversity similar to that seen in other Campanian foreland basin deposits of the Western Interior, such as the mid-paleolatitude Kaiparowits Formation of southern Utah, the higher paleolatitude Dinosaur Park Formation of southern Alberta, and the lower paleolatitude Aguja Formation of southwestern Texas. The lizards of the “Hunter Wash Local Fauna” represent crucial mid-paleolatitude data from a coastal plain depositional setting in Laramidia—allowing for comparisons to more well-studied assemblages at different latitudes and in different depositional settings.

As an 18th century collector, the anatomist William Hunter had a collection reflecting a diverse range of tastes and interests, including palaeontology. His credentials as a classic Scottish Enlightenment figure are most powerfully expressed in his writings advocating the fossil record as a source of evidence for extinction. This lends a peculiar significance to his own palaeontological material above all of his other collections - yet paradoxically this was one of the few collections to be neglected by his Trustees who failed to produce a catalogue of his fossil material when they audited his objects prior to their transportation to the University of Glasgow. This paper examines the evidence for work by a previous generation of palaeontological curators at the Hunterian Museum in attempting to retrospectively identify William Hunter's original specimens from within the broad range of material present in the 19th century that survives in today's collections.

This study examines the success of Arabic learning activities using the Arabic Treasure Hunt Game learning model to improve students’ Arabic vocabulary mastery while knowing their perceptions of the learning model. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection methods through observation and interview techniques. This research was carried out in Darusy Syahadah Boyolali Islamic boarding school with the research subject of I' dād Kulliyatil Mu'allimāt (IKM) of 42 students. The data analysis method is a qualitative analysis technique equipped with a bit of quantitative descriptive data. The results of this study indicate that (1) the Arabic Treasure Hunt Game can increase students' interest in learning Kulliyatil Mu'allimāt (IKM) in learning Arabic vocabulary. (2) The Arabic Treasure Hunt game can help students improve Arabic vocabulary mastery. (3) Students perceive the Arabic Treasure Hunt Game is an exciting game that can increase interest and enthusiasm for learning, facilitate mastering new vocabulary, and improve the ability to master Arabic vocabulary.

Effective ecological monitoring is central to the sustainability of subsistence resources of indigenous communities. For caribou, Arctic indigenous people's most important terrestrial subsistence resource, body condition is a useful measure because it integrates many ecological factors that influence caribou productivity and is recognized by biologists and hunters as meaningful. We draw on experience working with indigenous communities to develop a body condition monitoring protocol for harvested animals. Local indigenous knowledge provides a broad set of caribou health indicators and explanations of how environmental conditions may affect body condition. Scientific research on caribou body condition provides a basis to develop a simple dichotomous key that includes back fat, intestinal fat, kidney fat and marrow¬fat, as measures of body fat, which in autumn to early winter correlates with the likelihood of pregnancy. The dichotomous key was formulated on "expert knowledge" and validated against field estimates of body composition. We compare local indigenous knowledge indicators with hunter documented data based on the dichotomous key. The potential con¬tribution of community body condition monitoring can be realized through the continued comparative analysis of datasets. Better communication among hunters and scientists, and refinement of data collection and analysis methods are recommended. Results suggest that specific local knowledge may become generalized and integrated between regions if the dichotomous key is used as a generalized (semi-quantitative) index and complemented with other science and community-based assessments.

Toona sinensis is an important “vegetable and timber” tree species that is widely distributed in eastern and southeastern Asia. An efficient mechanism for preserving and utilizing germplasm resources is crucial for speeding up the process of genetic improvement of T. sinensis. We collected a total of 1040 germplasm resources of T. sinensis from China, Britain, and New Zealand. Using a total of 27,040 markers, we analyzed the genetic diversity, genetic structure, and core collection of these resources. Additionally, a comprehensive evaluation method for phenotypes of T. sinensis was established by principal component analysis (PCA) and the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS). Our analysis included three main results: Firstly, the breeding population, consisting of a total of 1040 individuals, contains a diverse genetic pool and can be divided into two genetic clusters. Secondly, the best core collection was obtained from the alternative population, consisting of a total of 208 individuals and comprising 20% of the breeding population. It was screened out based on Core Hunter 3 software with the average entry-to-nearest-entry (E-NE) algorithm. Finally, a comprehensive evaluation method was established based on eight selected agronomic traits of the core collection. This method allowed us to screen the best individual plants of the core collection, including N0237, N0972, and N0409. Overall, our research findings will enable better preservation and utilization of T. sinensis germplasm resources and result in faster improvement of T. sinensis varieties.

AbstractThis article examines the transplantation of America's ‘manly’ civilization to 1920s Fujian, China, through the experiences of Harry R. Caldwell (1876–1970), a Methodist missionary whose hunting was central to his social evangelism. With his rifle, Caldwell protected Chinese villagers from man-eating tigers, taught them how to hunt tigers effectively, and enabled them to reconceptualize their relationships with tigers and nature. By engaging the American Museum of Natural History in his specimen collection and hunt for the mythical ‘Blue Tiger’, Caldwell introduced an economy of natural expeditions to the villagers who were hired to support the hunt. This article argues that Caldwell's experiences as both a missionary and a hunter in Fujian was an extension, or negotiation, of his rugged masculinity, which was fostered in his Tennessee home town. He identified as both a Christian and a hunter, and he did not see these parts of himself as distinct. A comparison between Caldwell and his contemporary, the British naturalist Arthur de Carle Sowerby (1885–1954), accentuates America's rugged masculinity by suggesting different national approaches to hunting and the growing professionalization of the naturalist.

Bedrock mortars recur in the record of many prehispanic communities. However, few studies discuss their relationship with social processes. In the present work, we discuss a regional study of bedrock mortars in the semiarid north of Chile, specifically the Limarí River basin (30° S). Using a combination of formal, spatial, contextual, archaeobotanical, and absolute dating analyses, we assess the chronology of bedrock mortars and how they related to social processes of hunter-gatherer populations of the region (2000 BC to AD 1000). In particular, we suggest that an increase in production of bedrock mortars among pottery-using hunter-gatherer groups (AD 1–1000) can be observed, associated with a greater intensity of plant collection and use, and a diminution in the importance of hunting. This situation led to a set of new social relationships structured on the practice of collective grinding and shared use of bedrock mortars. These results show the importance of this material record as a means of approaching aspects of prehispanic social life, and demonstrates a methodological framework within which to interrogate this materiality by combining different analytical levels of bedrock mortars’ variability.

Digital photographs taken under controlled conditions were used to examine the incidence of linear enamel hypoplasia defects (LEHs) in burials from the Buckeye Knoll archaeological site (41VT98 Victoria county, Texas), which spans the Early to Late Archaic Period (ca. 2,500–6,500 BP uncorrected radiocarbon). The majority (68 of 74 burials) date to the Texas Early Archaic, including one extremely early burial dated to 8,500 BP. The photogrammetric data collection method also results in an archive for Buckeye Knoll, a significant rare Archaic period collection that has been repatriated and reinterred. We analyzed the incidence and developmental timing of LEHs in permanent canines. Fifty-nine percent of permanent canines (n = 54) had at least one defect. There were no significant differences in LEH frequency between the maxillary and mandibular canines (U = 640.5, n1 = 37, n2 = 43, p = .110). The sample studied (n = 92 permanent canines) had an overall mean of 0.93 LEH defect per tooth, with a median of one defect, and a mode of zero defects. Average age at first insult was 3.92 (median = 4.00, range = 2.5–5.4) and the mean age of all insults per individual was 4.18 years old (range = 2.5–5.67). Age at first insult is consistent with onset of weaning stress—the weaning age range for hunter-gatherer societies is 1–4.5. Having an earlier age of first insult was associated with having more LEHs (n = 54, rho = −0.381, p = 0.005).

This essay revisits Hal Foster's essay in Marcus and Myers’ The Traffic in Culture (1995), “The Artist as Ethnographer,” through the lens of the Danish-Vietnamese artist Danh Vo's practice of collecting historical material. While Foster problematizes Western artists’ “primitivist fantasies” in the 1990s world of “postcolonial and “multinational capitalism,” I will consider Vo’ 21st century method of acquiring objects through auction sales, negotiations with their owners, and excavating them from their sites of origin, as reversing the roles of “self” and “other.” In purchasing White House memorabilia dated to the Vietnam-American war at auctions and salvaging antique statues from Vietnamese Catholic churches as artistic practice, Danh Vo illustrates what Hal Foster considered the problem of “othering” the self instead of “selving” the other. This essay will consider how Vo could present a case of alterity that returns the gaze and projects Vietnamese history back to the Western viewer. In her review of Vietnamese-Danish artist Danh Vo's Guggenheim retrospective in February 2018, Roberta Smith hesitated to call the artist an artist Instead, she dubbed him, somewhat pejoratively, a “hunter gatherer” and called his collection of historical objects to be illustrative of the “usual fate of non-Western countries: the debilitating progression of missionaries, colonization, military occupation and economic exploitation.” The tone of her review is precisely the kind of attitude on the part of the contemporary art world that an artist such as Danh Vo, and others who have been marginalized from institutions such as the Guggenheim, have been fighting against Yet, Vo's very presence in a solo exhibition at the Guggenheim serves to disprove Smith's own “assumption of outsideness” (Foster 1995: 304).

Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) germplasm is exclusively maintained as ex situ living collections in the field for genetic conservation and evaluation. However, this is not for long term and the maintenance of field genebanks is expensive and challenging. Large area of land is required and the germplasms are exposed to extreme weather conditions and casualty from pests and diseases. By using 107 SSR markers, this study aimed to examine the genetic diversity and relatedness of 186 palms from a Nigerian-based oil palm germplasm and to identify core collection for conservation. On average, 8.67 alleles per SSR locus were scored with average effective number of alleles per population ranging from 1.96 to 3.34 and private alleles were detected in all populations. Mean expected heterozygosity was 0.576 ranging from 0.437 to 0.661 and the Wright’s fixation index calculated was -0.110. Overall moderate genetic differentiation among populations was detected (mean pairwise population FST = 0.120, gene flow Nm = 1.117 and Nei’s genetic distance = 0.466) and this was further confirmed by AMOVA analysis. UPGMA dendogram and Bayesian structure analysis concomitantly clustered the 12 populations into eight genetic groups. The best core collection assembled by Core Hunter ver. 3.2.1 consisted of 58 palms accounting for 31.2% of the original population, which was a smaller core set than using PowerCore 1.0. This core set attained perfect allelic coverage with good representation, high genetic distance between entries, and maintained genetic diversity and structure of the germplasm. This study reported the first molecular characterization and validation of core collections for oil palm field genebank. The established core collection via molecular approach, which captures maximum genetic diversity with minimum redundancy, would allow effective use of genetic resources for introgression and for sustainable oil palm germplasm conservation. The way forward to efficiently conserve the field genebanks into next generation without losing their diversity was further discussed.

The Kimmswick ‘bone bed’, a late Wisconsin paleontological locality in Jefferson County, Missouri, south of St. Louis, has been known since the early nineteenth century. The site gained international recognition in 1843 when a German immigrant and enterprising entrepreneur, Albert Koch, sold a composite skeleton of an American mastodon to the British Museum, parts of which came from Kimmswick. A half-century later a mechanic, inventor, and fossil hunter named Charles W. Beehler spent several months each year between 1897–1904 exhuming a massive collection of vertebrate fossils, representing several taxa, but one dominated by American mastodon (Mammut americanum). In addition, Beehler discovered human artifacts that he deemed were associated with the extinct fauna, thus adding Beehler to a growing number of proponents of what was termed the ‘American Paleolithic’. In retrospect he may have indeed uncovered evidence for an association between humans and extinct fauna, but the relationship went unrecognized by leading scientists of the time. Beehler constructed a wooden frame building on the site to house his collection, which he referred to as a museum. This was in preparation for visitors who would flock to the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis, known officially as the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. Featuring his active excavation and mastodon-dominated bone collection, Beehler created an attraction that enticed fair goers—as well as the curious—to schedule trips to Kimmswick. Following the World's Fair Beehler returned to St. Louis, but the disposition of his collection remained a mystery. There is no evidence that any significant number of specimens made their way into institutional hands where they were preserved. Beehler attracted national and international attention through his work at Kimmswick, but his reluctance to share or donate his collection to a reputable institution left him with a legacy of notoriety, and led to the loss of this important collection of vertebrate fossils.

Joseph Banks possessed the greater part of the zoological specimens collected on James Cook's three voyages round the world (1768–1780). In early 1792, Banks divided his zoological collection between John Hunter and the British Museum. It is probable that those donations together comprised most of the zoological specimens then in the possession of Banks, including such bird specimens as remained of those that had been collected by himself and Daniel Solander on Cook's first voyage, and those that had been presented to him from Cook's second and third voyages. The bird specimens included in the Banks donations of 1792 became part of a series of transactions during the succeeding 53 years which involved the British Museum, the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and William Bullock. It is a great pity that, of the extensive collection of bird specimens from Cook's voyages once possessed by Banks, only two are known with any certainty to survive.

The feeding of whole barley grain to breeding ewes is widely recommended yet it is recognised that a proportion of the grain fed in this form is usually passed intact in the faeces. It is claimed that whole grain improves the rumen fermentation process because it is broken down more slowly than milled grain and this, together with the saving in the cost of processing, means that a loss of up to 0.10 of grain intake in the faeces is considered acceptable. However there have been claims that on silage-based diets the proportion of grain passing intact in the faeces may be higher than 0.10 (Vipond, Hunter and King, 1985). In a preliminary study at this Institute with ewes on silage based diets in late pregnancy 0.18 of grain consumed was recovered intact in the faeces.In 1988 45 ewes in late pregnancy were fitted with faecal collection bags as described by Vipond, Hunter and King (1985) during two 4-day periods 5 and 3 weeks before lambing and during a further 4-day period 3 weeks after lambing. In the two pre-lambing collection periods ewes were allocated at random from uniform groups to one of 5 forages (4 silages and 1 hay). Three of the silages were made from primary growths of a ryegrass pasture, one cut on 25 May with a single-chop harvester (SI) and two cut on 8 June, one with a single-chop (S2) and one with a precision-chop (S3) harvester. The fourth silage was a second cut, harvested on 29 June with a precision-chop harvester (S4). Hay was of medium quality and was bought in. All forages were offered. ad libitum so that intake was 0.9 of forage offered. Ewes were offered 250 and 600 g/d whole barley 5 and 3 weeks before lambing respectively and 800 g/d 3 weeks after lambing. In the faecal collection after lambing all ewes received the same roughage (silage S4) and values for the proportion of intact grain in the faeces at this stage were used to adjust values 5 and 3 weeks pre-lambing by covariance.

Langston Hughes (1902–67), the wondering wandering poet, has left behind a rich legacy of books that never grow dusty on the shelves. There seems to be no path that Hughes left untrodden; he wrote drama, novels, short stories, two autobiographies, poetry, journalistic prose, an opera libretto, history, children's stories, and even lyrics for songs, in addition to his translations. Hughes was the first African American author to earn his living from writing and his career spans a long time, from the 1920s until the 1960s – he never stopped writing during this period. The Harlem Renaissance introduced prominent black writers who engraved their names in the American canon, such as Countee Cullen, Claude McKay, Jean Toomer and Zora Neale Hurston, but Hughes markedly stands out for his artistic achievements and longer career. Hughes had been identified by many as the spokesperson for his race since his works dug deep into black life, and his innovative techniques embraced black dialect and the rhythms of black music. He captured the essence of black life with conspicuous sensitivity and polished his voice throughout four decades. His name also had long been tied to the politics of identity in America. Brooding over his position, Hughes chose to take pride in being black in a racist nation. In his case, the dialectics of identity are more complicated, as they encompass debates involving Africa, black nationalism and competing constructions surrounding a seeming authentic blackness, in addition to Du Bois's double consciousness. Critics still endeavour to decipher the many enigmas Hughes left unresolved, having been a private person and a controversial writer. His career continues to broach speculative questions concerning his closeted sexual orientation and his true political position. The beginning of the new millennium coincided with the centennial of his birth and heralded the advent of new well-researched scholarship on his life and works, including Emily Bernard's Remember Me to Harlem: The Letters of Langston Hughes and Carl Van Vechten, 1925–1964 (2001), Kate A. In linguistics the concept of complexity has been analysed from various perspectives, among them language typology and the speech/writing distinction. Within intralinguistic studies, certain key linguistic features associated with reduced or increased complexity have been identified. These features occur in different patterns across various registers and their frequency is an indicator of the level of complexity of different kinds of texts. The concept of complexity has not, to date, been evaluated in early English medical writing, especiallyin terms of different text types. Thus, the present article analyses linguistic complexity in two Early Modern English medical texts, a surgical treatise (ff. 34r-73v) and a collection of medical recipes (ff. 74r-121v) housed as MS Hunter 135 in Glasgow University Library. Since they represent two different types of medical text, they can be productively compared in terms of linguistic complexity. The results obtained confirm that the surgical treatise is more complex than the collection of medical recipes owing to the higher presence of linguistic features denoting increased complexity in the former and of those indicating reduced linguistic complexity in the latter.

He issued the policy called Merdeka BelajarKampus Merdeka (MBKM) meaning “Freedom to learn, Independent Campus or the Independent Learning- Independent Campus”. This research analyzed the successful implementation of an MBKM Program in the Communication Study Program at UniversitasMuhammadiyah Sidoarjo. It used the approach of two policy implementation theories from Michael Hill & Peter L Hupe and Hudson, Hunter & Peckham. They have eight aspects of excellence in their analysis. The research method approach in this analysis used descriptive qualitative data collection using several data collection techniques such as interviews, observation, and documentation studies. The results of this researchshowed that the Communication Studies Program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sidoarjo has implemented the success from an administrative and practical perspective. From the eight aspects of the analysis of the successful implementation of the policy, several aspects that supported this success consisted of the policy environment, implementation preparation, and implementation support.

Hence, the present study evaluates the genetic diversity of 3115 safflower accessions from the Indian National Gene Bank, including Indian cultivars, to develop a manageable set of accessions, with similar genetic variations of germplasm studied. A total of 18 polymorphic SSR markers were used. The genetic diversity analysis revealed that germplasm accessions were highly diverse and there is no correlation between genetic diversity and the geographical collection of germplasm or sourcing of germplasm. A core set was developed using a core hunter software with different levels of composition, and it was found that 10% of the accessions showed maximum gene diversity and represented an equal number of alleles and major allele frequency in the germplasm studied. The developed core consisted of 351 accessions, including Indian cultivars, and they were validated with various genetic parameters to ascertain that they were a true core set for the studied accessions of safflower germplasm.

In many localities, bush meat trades remains unmanageable and state of the wild where animals are being hunted can be inferred from frequency of returned animals by hunters to bush meat markets. Information on the state of the wild where animals are been hunted were investigated by collecting information on the population of harvested biomass the hunters returned to two Bush meat markets. On the site market survey was employed for collection of information on harvested animals for twelve weeks. Each animal was properly observed, categorized into age group, sex class and identified to species level. Collected data were subjected to descriptive and Chi-square statistics. A total of 137 harvested animals from eight species were encountered in the two markets and Grasscutter were mostly found in the markets (58). Highest number of harvested biomass were encountered at Omi-Adio Bush meat market (63%). Majority of the animals were of females and adults groups. Significant association was found between the Bush meat markets and the harvested animal species hunters returned there.

This article summarizes my experimental and archaeological research about the earliest pottery in Northern Germany and Denmark, belonging to the Erteblle culture, a Late Mesolithic hunter-gatherer-fisher culture. I will present firing and cooking experiments with copies of Erteblle pottery and how a reference collection of experimental food crusts can be used to understand issues of radiocarbon reservoir effects and stable isotope measurements in food crusts. It will be shown that cooking food resources with a reservoir age, such as marine or freshwater fish, leads to the same reservoir age in the pottery. The results from the experiments will be compared to the archaeological record. I will discuss the implications of the experimental studies for radiocarbon dating of archaeological pottery, and for studies of style and function of ceramics.

The Global Jukebox (GJ) is an ambitious project initiated by the Association for Cultural Equity at New York’s Hunter College. Its main mission is to make available the extensive audio field recordings, pictures, and films studied by the legendary ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax and his colleagues accessible to the public for study. In the current beta version, the Global Jukebox has numerous navigation issues that could challenge even the seasoned web user. The methodological basis of data collection and analysis also deservers further explication. However, despite these weaknesses, there is much to be said for what GJ offers users. Whether spending hours moving around regions song by song or exploring familial cultural roots, users will be inspired to learn about the respective cultures and musical forms, thus fulfilling GJ’s education mission.

John Greenwood (1760-1819) was George Washington’s preferred dentist. He practiced in New York and made at least one of eight sets of dentures Washington wore (currently in the collection of the New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM). We know very little about John Greenwood’s (JG) formal education, except that he came from a famous family of dentists. He inherited from his father, Isaac Greenwood, one important book of the time, John Hunter’s 1778 treatise, A Natural History of the Human Teeth. That copy was donated to the New York Academy of Medicine by descendants of John Greenwood. Recently, we became aware of extensive marginalia that John Greenwood wrote in this book. The present article describes John Greenwood’s opinion on a variety of dental subjects such as the causes and mechanisms of tooth destruction and gum disease and the presence of microscopic annamalcula that were thought to be connected to poor oral hygiene. Although John Greenwood was self-educated, his observations are surprisingly insightful and at least 37 years ahead of what was described in the contemporary literature.

Our study investigates the factors that drive Vietnamese online shoppers in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) to make impulsive purchases of Biti's Hunter sports shoes (BHS), using the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) theory and the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Mixed methods are applied: in-depth interviews with ten regular online shoppers and focus group discussions with e-commerce managers for qualitative data collection, and survey techniques to gather quantitative data from 319 online shoppers. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 22.0 and AMOS 22.0. Our findings reveal five factors as a stimulus - visual appeal, website ease of use, product availability, portability, and social influence – and three factors as an organism - instant gratification, impulsiveness, and trust, that lead to the response of urge to buy impulsively. Significant positive effects are found among these constructs, except the relationship between portability and impulsiveness, visual appeal, social influence, trust, instant gratification, and urge to buy impulsively.

The surface pottery from a well-preserved Holocene archaeological site in south-western Libya is analysed. The collection suggests a long and protracted human occupation of the shelter, from Late Acacus (Mesolithic) hunter-gatherers to Late Pastoral (Neolithic) herders. Aim of the work is to decode the dynamic history of the site via the study of its surface elements, both artefacts and ecofacts, and the way they interacted over the millennia. To do this, traditional ceramic analysis is combined with recently developed methods of description imported from sedimentology, stressing the potentialities of surface archaeological material. In this framework, spatial analysis of scattered potsherds, in connection with their quantitative and qualitative features and chronological attribution, appears of main relevance in the analysis of site formation processes and postdepositional events that altered the archaeological deposit, transforming its present surface.
