Abstract:
This paper is a contribution to a long standing debate over the nature of research and the relations between knowledge and power recently instantiated in exchanges over the criticisms of Hammersley (Hammersley, 1992, 1995, 1997; Gelsthorpe, 1992; Ramazanoglu, 1992; Williams, 1993; Hammersley & Gomm, 1997a and 1997b; Romm, 1997; Temple, 1997). It takes as its starting point Beth Humphries’ recent critical commentary on Hammersley and emancipatory research, and her attempt to ‘go beyond ourselves’ (Humphries, 1997). It argues that the logical endpoint of arguments that suggest the continuous salience of the social divisions commonly found in the current sociological lexicon is a bewildering impossibility and that they should not be taken as guidelines for research practice. It clarifies this critique in relation to ‘gender’. It further argues that Humphries's position, despite her apparent sympathy for post-structuralism, retains much from earlier structuralist positions, which undermines the basis of her attempt to develop a position beyond the constraints of current emancipatory research.

Abstract:
Carbon Dioxide (CO 2) is a known contributor to the green house gas effect. Emissions of CO 2 are rising as the global demand for inexpensive energy is placated through the consumption and combustion of fossil fuels. Carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) may provide a method to prevent CO 2 from being exhausted to the atmosphere. The carbon may be captured after fossil fuel combustion in a power plant and then stored in a long term facility such as a deep geologic feature. The ability to verify the integrity of carbon storage at a location is key to the success of all CCS projects. A laser-based instrument has been built and tested at Montana State University (MSU) to measure CO 2 concentrations above a carbon storage location. The CO 2 Detection by Differential Absorption (CODDA) Instrument uses a temperature-tunable distributed feedback (DFB) laser diode that is capable of accessing a spectral region, 2.0027 to 2.0042 microns, that contains three CO 2 absorption lines and a water vapor absorption line. This instrument laser is aimed over an open-air, two-way path of about 100 m, allowing measurements of CO 2 concentrations to be made directly above a carbon dioxide release test site. The performance of the instrument for carbon sequestration site monitoring is studied using a newly developed CO 2 controlled release facility. The field and CO 2 releases are managed by the Zero Emissions Research Technology (ZERT) group at MSU. Two test injections were carried out through vertical wells simulating seepage up well paths. Three test injections were done as CO 2 escaped up through a slotted horizontal pipe simulating seepage up through geologic fault zones. The results from these 5 separate controlled release experiments over the course of three summers show that the CODDA Instrument is clearly capable of verifying the integrity of full-scale CO 2 storage operations.

Abstract:
The Royal Army Medical Corps made a significant contribution to victory in the Great War. Humphrey Humphreys' letters provide a rare account of life in one of its most effective units, a field ambulance. He served throughout the war and was in the Middle East from April 1915 until March 1919. During this time he served in 2nd South Midland Mounted Brigade Field Ambulance and its successors, rising to command the unit during the advance on Damascus. He also served as Deputy Assistant Director of Medical Services with 53rd Division and the Yeomanry Mounted Division during the 3rd Battle of Gaza and the Jerusalem campaign. The letters are annotated and provided with a commentary. This gives Humphreys' background prior to joining the army and an account of his post war activities. It sets out the military and medical contexts of his service, and the principal military operations in which he took part. Contributions made to the war effort by Birmingham's upper middle class, by students and past students of Birmingham University and by old boys of Bromsgrove School are assessed: Humphreys was a member of each of these three sets. Comparisons are made with other universities and schools.

Coombs, Neil. "The communicating village : Humphrey Jennings and surrealism." Thesis, Liverpool John Moores University, 2014. http://researchonline.ljmu.ac.uk/4326/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the films of Humphrey Jennings, exploring his work in relation to surrealism. This examination provides an overview of how surrealism’s set of ideas is manifest in Jennings’s documentary film work. The thesis does not assert that his films are surrealist texts or that there is such a thing as a surrealist film; rather it explores how his films, produced in Britain in the period from 1936 to 1950, have a dialectical relationship with surrealism. The thesis first considers Jennings’s work in relation to documentary theory, outlining how and why he is considered a significant filmmaker in the documentary field. It then goes on to consider Jennings’s engagement with surrealism in Britain in the years prior to World War Two. The thesis identifies three paradoxes relating to surrealism in Britain, using these to explore surrealism as an aura that can be read in the films of Jennings. The thesis explores three active phases of Jennings’s film work, each phase culminating in a key film. It acknowledges that Spare Time (1939) and Listen to Britain (1942) are key films in Jennings’s oeuvre, examining these two films and then emphasising the importance of a third, previously generally overlooked, film, The Silent Village (1943). These explorations allow an examination of the way that Jennings’s films articulate the relationship between surrealism and the everyday, the sublime and the uncanny. The thesis asserts that there is a specifically British form of surrealism that has developed from the historical situation of Britain in the period from 1936 to 1946, one that draws from the national identity of Britain. The symbolic domain of British surrealism and its praxis can read in the films of Jennings and the auratic traces of Jennings’s films thread through the work of subsequent filmmakers. This thesis describes these traces as the communicating village. The thesis’s consideration of Jennings’s films in relation to surrealism offers a means by which to examine the work of subsequent filmmakers and to assess the importance of surrealism to British cinema.

Green, D. "Narrative patterning in the novels of Emyr Humphreys." Thesis, Swansea University, 2000. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.637091.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to discuss some of the ways narrative patterning is achieved in the novels of Emyr Humphreys. It examines first the ways in which the titles and epigraphs are used before suggesting ways in which the real-life experiences of the author help shape the fiction. The following chapters discuss the novels in a relatively chronological order, grouping together the early novels (the first six), A Toy Epic and Outside the House of Baal, the seven novel Land of the Living sequence, and finally the independent novels written late in the author's career, in order to detect possible reasons for changes occurring. The discussion centres on the ways in which Humphreys uses pre-existing texts in order to give form and pattern to his own. It finds that, although the author begins by using literature, myth and history in a variety of ways and to a variety of extents, as the author increases his use of the novels to discuss the situation of Wales and what it means to be Welsh, the use of myth (particularly but not exclusively Celtic myth) and history take precedence and in the best work are used in different but complementary ways. The discussion includes the effect on patterning in the novel of aiming at a variety of genres and audiences. The later novels in particular are found to have conflicting interests when postmodern techniques and post-colonial attitudes collide with educational and nationalistic aims.

Abstract:
The endothelial cell (EC) cytoskeleton mediates several biological functions such as adhesion, migration, phagocytosis, cell division, and mechanosensitivity. These functions are carried out in part through dynamic cytoskeletal polymerization, modulation of crosslinking, and development of tension between intracellular organelles and the extracellular matrix via focal adhesion plaques. One important component of the cytoskeleton is actin which polymerizes into filaments and is thought to be prestressed by virtue of crosslinking proteins such as α-actinin, filamin and myosin II molecular motors. Additionally, actomyosin interaction has been hypothesized to act as a stress dissipation mechanism by virtue of dynamic crossbridging which facilitates actin diffusion through the polymer network of the cytoplasm (Humphrey et al., 2002).

Abstract:
The objective of this study is to formulate a theory for multigenerational interstitial growth of biological tissues whereby each generation has a distinct reference configuration determined at the time of its deposition. In this model, the solid matrix of a growing tissue consists of a multiplicity of intermingled bodies, each of which represents a generation, all of which are constrained to move together in the current configuration. This proposed framework builds on the concept of constrained mixtures of solids originally formulated by Humphrey and Rajagopal (2002). The specific aim is to determine the form of constitutive relations for the solid constituents of a multigenerational tissue, and provide simple illustrations of the theory.

Abstract:
A wave-rotor pressure-gain combustor (WRPGC) ideally provides constant-volume combustion and enables a gas turbine engine to operate on the Humphrey-Atkinson cycle. It exploits pressure (both compression and expansion) waves and confined propagating combustion to achieve pressure rise inside the combustor. This study first presents thermodynamic cycle analysis to illustrate the improvements of a gas turbine engine possible with a wave rotor combustor. Thereafter, non-steady reacting simulations are used to examine features and characteristics of a combustor rig that reproduces key features of a WRPGC. In the thermodynamic analysis, performance parameters such as thermal efficiency and specific power are estimated for different operating conditions (compressor pressure ratio and turbine inlet temperature). The performance of the WRPGC is compared with the conventional unrecuperated and recuperated engines that operates on the Brayton cycle. Fuel consumption may be reduced substantially with WRPGC introduction, while concomitantly boosting power. Simulations have been performed of the ignition of propane by a hot gas jet and subsequent turbulent flame propagation and shock-flame interaction.

Abstract:
Growth and remodeling are fundamental processes in the development of tissues in normal and pathological conditions. Mechanical quantities such as stress, strain or strain energy in the tissue can modulate its growth and remodeling; however, it is not clear yet which mechanical quantity takes this role. Experimental data can be found to support both. Furthermore, the driving-mechanism may be tissue-dependent and therefore, a universal growth law may not exist [7,8]. This field has been an important research topic in biomechanics over the recent decades. The review articles by Humphrey [4] and Taber [8] contain numerous related references. An important contribution was made by Rodriguez et al. [7] to the area of volumetric growth of soft elastic tissue which allowed for the coupling between stress and finite growth through multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient into elastic and growth parts. This theory has been followed in our study. Our goal is to model growth of the hind foot cartilage anlagen in newborn infants, and explore effect of congenital anomalies on the otherwise normal development.

Abstract Energy and exergy analyses have been performed on a pulse detonation engine. A pulse detonation engine is a promising new engine, which uses a detonation wave instead of a deflagration wave for the combustion process. The high-speed supersonic combustion wave reduces overall combustion duration resulting in a nearly constant volume energy release process compared to the constant pressure process of gas turbine engines. Gas mixture in a pulse detonation engine has been modeled to execute the Humphrey cycle. The cycle includes four processes: isentropic compression, constant volume combustion, isentropic expansion and isobaric compression. Working fluid is a fuel-air mixture for unburned gases and products of combustion for burned gases. Different fuels such as methane and JP10 have been used. It is assumed that burned gases are in chemical equilibrium states. Both thermal efficiency and effectiveness (exergetic efficiency) have been calculated for the pulse detonation engine and simple gas turbine engine. Comparison shows that for the same pressure ratio pulse detonation engine has better efficiency and effectiveness than the gas turbine system.

Guidelines for low energy building design based on the adaptive thermal comfort concept - Technical report: IEA EBC Annex 69: Strategy and Practice of Adaptive Thermal Comfort in Low Energy Buildings. Abstract:
The adaptive thermal comfort concept has been developed over many years and proven in numerous field studies (e.g. Webb 1964, Nicol and Humphreys 1973, Auliciems 1981b, de Dear et al. 1997, McCartney and Nicol 2002, Manu et al. 2016), showing that people are satisfied with a wide range of thermal conditions. Prerequisite is that people are provided with means to make themselves comfortable, that they know which opportunities they have, that it is socially acceptable to use these opportunities and that they are willing to use them (Hellwig, 2015). However, the overall understanding of how to design for such opportunities enabling the occupant to make themselves comfortable in relation to climate and building type, thus how to convert the adaptive thermal comfort concept into building design and concepts for operating buildings, is still limited. There are still common misunderstandings in the interpretation of the adaptive comfort approach among building planners and operators e.g. regarding the amount of control, the seriousness of this topic or the level of information needed by occupants for which reason guidance (e.g. CIBSE 2010, Cook et al. 2020) and knowledge transfer (e.g. Hellwig and Boerstra 2017, 2018) is absolutely essential. Consequently, there is still a gap between scientific research and real-world-application, which this report aims to diminish.
