Abstract:
The theory of humours (akhlat) is one of the fundamental pillars of the Unani System of Medicine (USM). The concept of health and disease depends on the quality (kaifiyat) and quantity (kammiyat) of humour (khilt). Health (sehat) lasts when humours remain in equilibrium and the main determinant of health is the balance in six essential factors (asbab-e-sittah zarooriya). These factors are highly modifiable and deviation in any of them leads to disequilibrium in humours either qualitatively or quantitatively which ultimately manifests in the form of the disease. Elimination (istifragh) of these morbid humours from the body becomes mandatory to treat the diseases or to restore health. One of the effective methods of elimination is purgation (ishal). It is a method by which morbid humours from the body are eliminated through the anal route. Before the elimination of any pathological humour especially in chronic diseases, it is mandatory to make the humour easily eliminable. This process of making the pathological humour eliminable is known as concoction (nuzj). The process of concoction is a regular and continuous process of the tabiyat (mediatrix naturae) of the body. In case of a minor deviation in humour, tabiyat itself eliminates it from the body after concoction. When the causative pathological humours are in abundance or grossly deviated from normalcy, tabiyat needs help from outside the body. This help of tabiyat can be done with some humour specific drugs which are known as concoctive medicines (munzij advia). Once, the humours become eliminable, the process of evacuation can be started. Classical Unani literature and published papers were explored to find the rationale of purgation therapy. Purgation is found to be advisable in the treatment of many chronic diseases. Tabiyat is the ultimate healer in the body and purgation helps it to overcome the diseases. Keywords: Istifragh; Munzij; Nuzj; Akhlat; Humours; Concoction

This research is conducted to study the phenomenon of humour pragmatically in TV talk shows. Though humour is found in daily conversation, most people ignore how it is working in the production. The concept of humour indicates both positive (non- aggressive) and negative (aggressive) affects which may unify or divide people, but it is more preferable to take positive humour into the consideration of this research to narrow down the topic. The objectives of this research are to analyze the maxims that are violated to create humor, to describe and explain the production of humour by examining the pragmatic structure of humorous transcripts, and to explain the functions of humor created through maxims violation expressed by speakers in TV talk shows. This research is conducted by using qualitative method. The data are in the form of utterances done by speakers. The data sources of this research are selected from the videos on You Tube Channel. After being collected, the data are analyzed based on three levels: the initiation of humour and its purpose, the pragmatic strategies of humour, and

Humour functions as a critic, satire, irony or propaganda. By using humour, it is posible to say the truth elegantly and sofly, without disturbing others’ feeling. In pragmatic comunication theory, humour is created from deviations of comunication principles, e.g: Grice principle of comunication and Leech principle of comunication. This research uses the jokes on the former leader of Libyan Mu’ammar al-Qaz\a>fi as the object material. Mu’ammar al-Qaz\a>fi was the leader of controversy as well as he was a dictator. Then, there are assumptions that the humours about al-Qaz\a>fi are not only about entertaiment but also about special aims. The researcher uses pragmatic analysis that covers Grice cooperative principle, Leech politeness principle and speech acts (illocutionary act). The results are that political humour in Libyan was a new kind of humour and it was developed while the revolution was on and in the aftermath. While Ilocutionart Acts, which are found in the humours about al-Qaz\a>fi, are irony, claiming, ordering, complaining, and satiring. The aims in the humours are satire and irony.

Abstract:
Human being has always been suffering from diseases. Before the beginning of Ṭibb (medicine) (300Bc), superstitions were considered as the cause of disease. Therefore, Gods and Goddesses were worshipped to cure disease and regain health. Since the existence of medicine, the material is considered a cause of disease. Accordingly, treatment shifted towards the material. In 500 BC Buqrat (Hippocrates) started the discussion of health. He established the views of structure, composition, properties and functions, health and disease in respect of the human body. So, the goal of Greek medicine is to protect health to the possible extent and cure disease. Hippocrates proposed the concept of AkhlāṭArbaa (four humours/four fluid) these are Khilṭ-i- Dam (sanguineous humour), Khilṭ-i-Balgham (phlegmatic humour), Khilṭ-i-Ṣafrā (choleric humour) and Khilṭ-i-Sawdāʼ (melancholic humour). He also proposed that the harmonious state of four humours is responsible for health. And, disharmony results in disease. Every humour is attributed to specific qualities, characteristics and some specific and general functions. But the main function of these Akhlāṭ (humours) is to provide nutrition and replenishment of every organ of the body according to their temperament. Choleric humour is synonymously called yellow bile or bilious humour. Yellow bile is one of the four humours, responsible for health and disease. In abnormal state yellow bile can produce a number of diseases called bilious diseases. In U.S.M. (Unani System of Medicine) bilious diseases are discussed under the heading of Sū-i-MizājMāddῑ (morbid temperament associated with substance). In this paper, a brief explanation of yellow bile along with it relates is given. Pathophysiology of bilious diseases is given in detail.

Abstract:
Studies often treat sense of humour as a unidimensional construct. Recently, however, four different humour styles have been hypothesized and validated by the Humor Styles Questionnaire (HSQ). In the present two studies, first, the HSQ received cross‐cultural validation among French‐speaking Belgian students (94 high school and 87 college students). Second, apart from some similarities (Extraversion, low need for closure), the four humour styles were found to be differently related to personality. Social and self‐enhancing humour styles were positively related to Agreeableness, Openness, and self‐esteem, whereas hostile humour was negatively related to Agreeableness and Conscientiousness. Self‐defeating humour was negatively related to Emotional Stability, Conscientiousness, security in attachment, and self‐esteem. Finally, students' humour styles were neither direct nor indirect predictors of school performance, but self‐defeating and hostile humour styles were typical of students with low school motivation. This research examined the structure and correlates of the Humor Styles Questionnaire (HSQ) in Lebanese university students. Four humour factors were found, as in the original Canadian samples: Affiliative, Self‐Enhancing, Aggressive, and Self‐Defeating humour. Scale reliabilities were generally acceptable, and inter‐correlations among the scales were low. Lebanese participants scored lower than Canadians on Affiliative and Self‐Enhancing humour and lower than Belgians on Affiliative and Aggressive humour. As in Canadian and Belgian samples, males reported significantly more use of Aggressive and Self‐Defeating humour than did females. Humour styles correlated differentially, and generally as predicted, with horizontal and vertical individualism and collectivism, attachment styles, perceived health, and psychological well‐being. Overall, the findings support the cross‐cultural stability of the HSQ as well as the differential relationship of these humour styles with culture‐related personality traits and psychological well‐being. This study explores the issue of humour stereotyping between ex-Yugoslav nations, their veridicality and possible explanations. Three research questions were put forward relating to humour stereotyping, as well as the differences in humour production, use and appreciation between the countries. The survey data were collected on a sample of university students from four ex-Yugoslav countries (N = 611). The results revealed strong negative humour stereotyping toward Croats and Slovenians and positive stereotyping toward Bosnians. However, only about 0–4 % of the variance in humour production, use and appreciation, depending on the sub-scales of the Multidimensional Sense of Humor Scale, could be attributed to the group (country) membership, thus indicating low correspondence between the stereotypes and reality. The results concerning the stereotypes were interpreted by evoking the discourse of Balkanism, as well as humour-style differences in popular culture between the countries

The present research investigated the relation between the use of positive, negative and instrumental humour in the context of romantic relationships and relational well-being as assessed by positive and negative patterns of conflict resolution behaviour. A sample of 116 heterosexual married couples completed scales of relational humour use as well as conflict resolution behaviour. Behaviour of couples while attempting to resolve a relationship based conflict was also coded by independent raters. Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM) analyses showed patterns of actor and partner effects for each type of humour use. Specifically, positive humour use of both partners predicted more positive conflict resolution, whereas negative humour use of both partners predicted less positive conflict resolution. Additionally, instrumental humour use of both partners seemed to predict greater apathy during conflict resolution. Implications for considering couple humor use, assessed for both partners of the dyad, for understanding relational well-being are discussed.

Abstract:
Research has found that humour styles can moderate the relationship between various facets of mental health and well-being. Most of these studies have used college student samples, however, and the generalizability of these findings has not been firmly established. This study examined how humour styles moderate the relationship between hopelessness and suicide ideation in both student and community samples. Community participants from the U.S. and Canada (n = 554) and student participants from a Canadian university (n = 208) completed several self-report measures including the Humor Styles Questionnaire. Analyses revealed differences in humour styles between the samples, as well as differences in humour styles between men and women. Regression analyses showed that self-defeating humour moderated the relationship between hopelessness and suicide ideation for student participants but not for community participants. Conversely, self-enhancing humour moderated the relationship between hopelessness and suicide ideation for community participants but not for student participants. These results suggest that high levels of self-defeating humour and self-enhancing humour may be uniquely maladaptive for these respective samples. These and other findings point to the necessity of recruiting diverse samples to better understand the beneficial and detrimental associations between humour styles and mental health. The potential to use measures of humour style as a tool to help identify at-risk individuals and to inform the development of intervention programs is discussed.

In this respect, philosophers and theorists as wide apart as Aristotle and the French, feminist Julia Kristeva (1980; also see Goldberg, 1999a) have regarded a baby's ability to laugh as one of the earliest signs of the separation of 'self' from 'other', a reciprocal process deemed to be crucial to the formation of a separate identity. However, although the general importance of humour might be agreed amongst researchers, what theoretical position one takes will have a profound effect on how one approaches and analyses humour. In much psychological research the focus tends to be on how humour works, i.e., syntax, semantic categories, sex differences, personality types, etc., and one finds a frustrating neglect of what is actually meant by the term 'humour' in terms of history and emergences. Consequently, an important question tends to go unchallenged: Is humour some unproblematic innate human ability, or, a socially defined concept that has changed and mutated alongside our understanding of what is means to be person? In an attempt to grapple with this question, the following genealogical account is less concerned with fathoming out how humour works than with relating it to notions of human subjectivity, or how theories of humor have informed and reflected social constructs of what it means to be a 'subject'.

Abstract:
Background. Although investigations of the use of humour in the management of people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) are not numerous, some significant findings have created the need to go deeper into the topic.Main research question. What are some of the potential benefits of humour in the management of PwMS, given the current state of scientific knowledge?Materials and methods. A scoping review was conducted using the PRISMA-ScR methodology. Information for the literature review was collected from the PubMed and Embase databases using the keywords “humour” and “multiple sclerosis”. Overall, 10 scientific investigations were analysed, grouped, interpreted, and generalized.Results. The research revealed: humour-based stress reduction for PwMS; the relationship between executive function and humour coping in PwMS; the distinctive influence of humour on employment status among individuals with relapsing-remiting multiple sclerosis (RRMS); the relationship between humour and personal long-term prognosis in PwMS; and the differences in perception of humour in PwMS.Conclusions. Appropriate use of humour (among other factors) can significantly improve the neuropsychological status in persons with RRMS and help them staying employed. Executive function and personalized long-term prognosis for PwMS are to some extent related to humor. Group analyses revealed lower scores in RRMS patients on humoristic visual tasks compared to scores on verbal tasks, and PwMS had impaired comprehension of figurative and humorous items compared to their comprehension of the literal items of simple medical responses.

Abstract:
Humour is considered as a crucial job resource for healthcare professionals. It has been further credited for several positive outcomes such as resilience and well-being. This study investigated: (a) the mediating role of resilience between adaptive humours styles (self-enhancing and affiliative) and well-being at work and (b) the moderating role of self-esteem in the indirect relationship between the adaptive humour styles and well-being at work via resilience. The study was conducted on a sample of 354 healthcare professionals. The findings of the study indicate a significant association between the adaptive humour styles and well-being at work with resilience as a mediator. Furthermore, self-esteem was found to significantly moderate the indirect relationship between self-enhancing humour and well-being at work via resilience.

The shift was so powerful that in fact Szlengel-commentator replaced Szlengel-satirist. He did not hesitate to use the sharpest irony both against his enemies and against other victims of the system. There is an ample evidence supporting the benefits of instructional humour, among which increased attention and interest, information retention and learning speed, more productive learning environment, a more positive image of the instructor, more efficient acquisition of linguistic and cultural competencies, an increased conversational involvement, enhanced cultural awareness and more stimulated critical thinking. However, most of the research findings rely on what is termed appropriate humor such as puns, jokes, anecdotes and alike, while potentially offensive humour that relates to sexual, ethnic, religious, political identity is generally labeled inappropriate and advised to be avoided in the classroom environment. It is in this particular context that this study seeks to test the potential of such humour, sexual and ethnic in particular, to act as a tool of increasing cultural awareness and stimulate critical thinking among university students. To do so, the study relies on an experimental class design combining few in-class and extracurricular activities created by using sexual and ethnic humour samples.

Judge Rinder is a British reality TV court show. It has much in common with the US archetype Judge Judy. But there are differences. One is Judge Rinder’s humour, and more specifically his wit. Using a research database of Judge Rinder cases. The article examines the nature and effects of humour in this courtroom setting. It explores the role of the judge, the form the humour takes and the interactions and social relations it generates. A distinctive feature of the analysis is consideration of the impact of the audio-visual technologies, and the techniques and conventions developed around them, upon the interactions and social relations the onscreen humour generates with viewers. While the camera aligns the screen audience with the judge and the laughter track infects the audience with emotion the judge generates, the paper cautions against assuming that all viewers have the same emotional experience. The present study focuses on the occupational health of nurses, investigating the relationship between dimensions of occupational burnout and the use of coping mechanisms through humor. To conduct the research, we used standardized assessment instruments to measure dimensions of occupational burnout and investigated how nurses resort to coping mechanisms through humor using the questionnaire method. Our results revealed significant correlations between certain dimensions of burnout and the use of coping mechanisms through humor. Mental detachment was positively associated with heavy use of humor as a coping strategy, indicating that nurses experiencing increased emotional exhaustion tend to turn more often to humor to cope with professional stress. This finding suggests that humour may play an important role in counteracting burnout. This research adds significantly to our understanding of nurses' occupational health and suggests that interventions focused on promoting the adaptive use of humour may be effective in reducing emotional exhaustion in this important profession.

Abstract:
Humor is widely recognized as an effective method for promoting language acquisition and enhancing language skills. Using humor in language training can help students feel more at ease, reduce tension, and encourage good emotions, all of which have a favorable effect on their motivation and engagement. In language-learning environments, linguistic jokes are one sort of humor that has not been well investigated. This study uses descriptive qualitative methodologies to investigate the advantages of linguistic jokes in the English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom. Data were gathered for the study from interviews, focus groups, and classroom observations involving EFL students. The results show that language learners gain from using linguistic jokes in EFL classes in several ways, including greater motivation, increased engagement, improved communication skills, and decreased anxiety. The study also emphasizes how humour can improve the learning environment by encouraging greater participation and a sense of belonging among students. The qualitative data show that learners have good attitudes toward using humour in language acquisition, which lends credence to these findings. The study proposes that EFL teachers utilize humour as a teaching method to facilitate language learning and develop language skills. It also finds that including linguistic jokes in EFL classrooms can benefit language learners in various ways.

Abstract:
43 Background: Most people are familiar with the expression "laughter is the best medicine". By triggering endorphin release and strengthening relationships, it can be considered a perfect holistic care-approach. We explored the occurrence, acceptability, and functions of humor and laughter in patients with incurable cancer. Methods: We performed 16 in-depth interviews with patients with incurable cancer at the day-care unit of a Dutch comprehensive cancer hospital. We further performed and online questionnaire-study among 33 oncologists (41% of 81 approached) about experiences with humour and laughter in breast, lung, head and neck, or urological cancer. Results: Nearly all oncologists reported using humour (97%), and all reported to sometimes laugh during consultations; 83% reported experiencing a positive effect of laughter. These results were in line with patients’ experiences: Patients noted that humor always stayed alive, despite having incurable cancer. Apart from this human aspect, patients also used humor to broach difficult topics and to downplay challenges. Some patients explicated that the appreciation of humor was dependent on the type of humor, since humor is rather personal. Patients and oncologists acknowledged that using humor is delicate, and sometimes inappropriate, partly because they did not always share the same type of humor. Laughter, in contrast, was regarded as ‘lighter’ than humor, and could, accordingly, more easily be implemented. However, both patients and specialists cautioned against patients using laughter to avoid uncertainty or broach difficult topics. Conclusions: Our results suggest that patients and healthcare professionals can benefit from humour or laughter. Many conversations were joyful, even in the midst of medical challenges. Although humor is personal, laughter can be applied more easily. Healthcare professionals therefore need to have a basic comprehension of the impact of laughter to facilitate discussions, improve the doctor-patient relationship, and identify underlying wishes. If applied appropriately, shared laughter will possibly add to optimise shared medicine.

In this article, other studies dealing with humour are examined in order to bring out the difficulty involved in defining this concept and the various perspectives from which it has been considered. The definitions given have been diverse and at times contradictory. However, the point they all share is that humour is closely linked to the personality of the writer, to the extent of being considered a type of Weltanschauung. As the concepts of humour and writer are inseparable, this article is an attempt to use humour in literary studies in substitution of the idea of comedy, in order to stress the conscious process by which a narrator creates comic effect, lays out his narrative, and an author expresses his view point regarding his work and the world.</p>

Abstract:
This research examined the role of humour in power-differentiated wage bargaining conversations. We collected transcripts of wage bargaining between the local labour union and management negotiators of a multinational beverage company operating in the Philippines. Through conversation analysis, we determined how both parties utilised humor to challenge or maintain power relations even as both labour and management worked towards a wage bargaining agreement. Findings show that humour was used to maintain intergroup harmony, subvert authority and control the negotiation. Our findings may be useful for labour organisations and multinational corporations that operate in Southeast Asian countries with historically tumultuous labour relations such as the Philippines. Studies have shown how humour can play a significant role in various social interactions, such as business meetings (Rogerson-Revell, 2007), conversations between friends (Hay, 2000) and co-workers (Holmes, 2000), problem solving (Dunbar, Banas, Rodriguez, Liu, & Abra, 2012), conflict negotiations (Maemura & Horita, 2012) and price haggling (O’Quin & Aronoff, 1981). We note, however, that humour analysis rarely considers asymmetric features of social interactions occurring within the context of negotiation.

The article presents statistical evidence for the claim that the distribution of humor in Oscar Wilde's Lord Arthur Savile's Crime and Douglas Adams's The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy is not random and differs significantly between both texts. Using the methodology of the General Theory of Verbal Humor, all the instances of humour in both texts were identified and recorded. The distance between each instance was then calculated and subjected to analysis. The statistical model used to prove the hypotheses is explained in some detail and some hypotheses to explain the findings are presented. The significance of the finding that the distribution of humour in long texts is not random is found to lie in having introduced a new fact in need of explanation through literary theories.

This research addresses humour as a pragmatic and social phenomenon. It seeks to demonstrate how a Greek-Latin morpheme is used to build a humorous pattern in colloquial language. To this end, the object of study is first identified and then related to other similar concepts (irony, sarcasm, impoliteness). Next, a brief description is provided of a frequent suffix in the field of science and which speakers may also adopt as a strategy to develop humour. Finally, The General Theory of Verbal Humour is applied to the corpus compiled, comprising 157 tweets. The pragmatic analysis of the five most representative texts published on Twitter is then presented.

Abstract:
This essay humours the possibility of a kinder-garde, in which poets humour children so that children might humour poetry's futurity. I propose humouring as a critical approach premised on a compliant tension with a text, a subversive toleration that undermines ‘aetonormative’ seriousness and upholds ‘childish’ humour as valuable play-with-value. The Kindergarde anthology (ed. Dana Teen Lomax 2013 ) claims to translate avant-gardism for a child audience, linking its experimental poems to the experimentation of children's play. Using carnivalisation, détournement, defamiliarisation, and other forms of what Ryan Fitzpatrick and Jonathan Ball term ‘experimentation-with-humour’, Kindergarde constructs inclusive spaces for humoured subversion, in which children can sidestep oppressive adult normativity. The child's humoured humouring of adult power is discussed here by re-reading children's literature's ‘impossible relation’ (after Jacqueline Rose) in terms of Michel Serres’ ‘parasite’, Judy Little's feminist ‘humouring’ of male language, and Lee Edelman's queering of ‘reproductive futurism.’ Asserting that it is the condition of twenty-first-century poetry to be humoured – as a ‘minor literature’ (Deleuze and Guattari) with a ‘minor attitude’ (Georges Bataille) – my humouring of the Kindergarde builds toward a post-literary vision of the kinder-gardist as futurity-humourist.

Abstract:
Although humans know instinctually that humour has healing powers, an understanding of the precise effects of humour and laughter had been largely unknown until the twentieth Century, due to the lack of technology. Not all of the barriers to research have been removed – it is still not possible to know “how much” good humour a person has or is experiencing – but there have been significant discoveries that help to prove that while laughter may not be the best medicine, it certainly helps the medicine go down. The understanding of humour has come in four distinct areas, and in periods that reflect the available technologies. With the discovery of laughing diseases, interest in humour drove Harry Paskind in 1932 to create a new machine to study muscle tone during good humour. From the 1950s to 1970s, the neurology of laughter was researched, accompanying further research into the pathology of laughter after an epidemic of laughter in Uganda from 1962-64. After this came the study of the immunology and the discovery that laughter fights cancer, with the champion of laughter research, William Fry, dedicating a decade from 1969-79 to this work. Finally came research on the indisputable effect of laughter – its healthy effects on human psychology. Thanks, in part, to this research, and also supporting it, the past forty years have seen men like Norman Cousins and Hunter “Patch” Adams bring humour into mainstream healthcare. This research provides doctors an opportunity both now and in the future, as we learn even more about humour, to bring a softer face to medicine and truly give patients something to smile about. Abstract:
Stereotypes have often been associated with negative outcomes such as discrimination, prejudice, and bias. Nonetheless, this study investigates the potential for humour within stereotypical discourse in a sitcom. Through an analysis of humorous language used in sitcom, this research aims to uncover ways in which stereotypical utterances might bring about laughter as an outcome. Using the data from seven U.S. sitcom Will and Grace episodes throughout the eighth season, I generated the data from the show's transcript. I analysed how two characters, a white American woman and her maid, communicate with each other with a content analysis approach to categorize the different themes of humour presented in the seven chosen episodes. To determine of what is considered to be humorous utterances, I used the audience's laughter as the marker (Messerli 2016). The research demonstrated that the use of stereotypical humor involves exploiting the preconceived notions about another party's country of origin, physical appearance, and cognitive capacity. Further, my findings showed that an individual with higher power often performed stereotypical humour towards that with less power, while Holmes et al. (2003) saw humour as a linguistic technique for people who lacked power to establish a favourable image of themselves by challenging authority. Ultimately, this research promises to advance our understanding of the complex relationship between humour, stereotyping, and societal attitudes.

Abstract:
Shakespeare’s insults are ambivalent creatures that oscillate between humour and pathos. That is what this article aims to show. It focuses on the part insults play in the articulation of humour and pathos in Shakespeare’s plays, Falstaff and his reference to “a jest with a sad brow” appearing as a case in point. Through examples taken from Much Ado About Nothing, Love’s Labour’s Lost, King Henry IV, Hamlet, Othello, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the article explores how insults and moments of insult convey the complex and fragile balance between humour and pathos. It shows that Shakespeare’s theatre of insult is based on the tension between laughter and tears, between the ludic and the serious modes or humours of insult, at a time when the word ‘humour’ was mainly conceived in the plural and still referred to fluid(s) rather than wit. This article first analyses how Shakespeare’s plays reveal a breach between humour and pathos by dramatizing, on the one hand what is called “skirmish[es] of wit” in Much Ado About Nothing, and, on the other hand, what is called “heart-struck injuries” in King Lear. After dissociating comic and tragic insults, the article then shows how Shakespeare cultivates moments of insult when the spectators do not know whether they should laugh or cry, moments when insults waver between humour and pathos, between mirth-making and grief-making, moments in which insults hurt even when they are supposed to be humorous. This ambivalence is related to the ambivalence that is at the heart of the way the tongue is represented in Shakespeare’s world which points to its essential volatility, unpredictability and instability.
