Abstract:
From 12th to 16th September 2017 the 10th edition of the CeSPeC’s Summer School took place in Cuneo (Italy). This event revolved around the role of the humanities in the contemporary world and had the purpose of explaining the various perspectives which may demonstrate how still the contribution of such disciplines is important to interpret the world and the reality in the post-modern, global and post-digital era. In this introduction we provide a focus on the main topic and a brief presentation of the reflections composing the present papers collection.

Abstract:
The article examines the achievements and problems that exist in the digital research in the context of the development of media culture, today virtual reality has ceased to be a situational option. Media culture turns out to be a two-way phenomenon: on the one hand, it is a product of our civilization, on the other hand, it transforms our culture. Digital Humanities focus on different ways of processing and presenting information, at the same time, any data selection work presupposes the presence of an angle of view, ethical and ideological grounds for the selection itself and the context for the presentation of research results. Criticism of Digital Humanities can be viewed from the standpoint of the «remove culture» by R. Barth. The removal of culture presupposes the development of the postmodern idea of the need to reveal how much our ideas about the world are predetermined by certain cultural schemes, languages and genres, including how non-neutral media culture in general and digital research is. In the absence of criticism, lack of agreements on ethical norms, social responsibility, the risks are that we allow media culture and digital research tools in a sense to dictate to us the type of society in which we live

Abstract:
This article argues that the digital humanities can be seen as a humanities project in a time of significant change in the academy. The background is a number of scholarly, educational and technical challenges, the multiple epistemic traditions linked to the digital humanities, the potential reach of the field across and outside the humanities, and the ‘digital’ as a boundary object. In the article, four case studies are used to exemplify the digital humanities as a humanities project, and it is suggested that the field can be seen as a trading zone and meeting place rather than a strained ‘big tent’. In this way, the digital humanities can accept scholarly and technological challenges in relation to the digital as well as being an important place for thinking about, experimenting with and rethinking the humanities.

Abstract:
The Digital Humanities: A Primer for Students and Scholars is written by Eileen Gardiner and Ronald G. Musto as a resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students working in the field of the digital humanities. Overall, the well-structured book discusses how technological developments have presented scholars and students with new grounds to explore the methodology, pedagogy, and public history aspects of digital history. It tries to respond to such questions as whether the Digital Humanities (DH) is a field of study or a methodology, if it is a social science, a humanistic, or a technological discipline, or whether it is the study of the interaction between computing and humanities.

Computational humanities is at the intersection of computing technologies and the disciplines of the humanities. Research in this field has steadily increased over the past years. Computational tools supporting textual search, large database analysis, data mining, network mapping, and natural language processing are employed by the humanities researcher. This opens up new realms for analysis and understanding. This paper provides a brief introduction into computational humanities.

Abstract:
This work deals with the use of digital tools for the production of knowledge, based on the central theme of Digital Humanities, having been outlined based on experiences lived in the Law course of a Higher Education Institution in Feira de Santana, Bahia, Brazil. The focus is to identify how the use of digital tools can contribute to the production of knowledge. For this, descriptive, exploratory, bibliographic and documentary research of a qualitative nature was carried out, based on the report of experiences lived in the period from 2019 to 2022, in a higher course offered in a hybrid format. With the research, it was possible to demonstrate the importance of using digital tools as strategies for the production of knowledge.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter examines material published in the field of the digital humanities (DH) in 2018, all of which explores the relationship between the digitalized present and its pre-digital past(s). In one publication, Friending the Past: The Sense of History in the Digital Age, Alan Liu notes: ‘The signal sense of history […] is not just like a plot on a radar scope. It is like the unfolding epic plot of Tolstoy’s War and Peace’ (p. 157). As political scandals over the use of social media and the role of cyber-targeting to influence electoral outcomes continue to dominate the news, it is becoming increasingly evident that not only are social media ushering in an era in which we are alienated from our personal data, but that today’s digitalized world builds on and replicates pre-digital hegemonic structures. Books by Andrew Piper and Alan Liu discuss ways in which scholars can approach the complexities and challenges of literary tradition and historical transmutation through the application of computational methods and digital tools. Discussion then turns to the ways in which digital practices have converged with wider cultural and political developments since the second half of the twentieth century. Lee Humphreys examines this transformation through the traces that we leave as the record of our daily lives while on social media, while Felix Stalder considers how such practices have wider ramifications as symptoms of a ‘digital condition’, for good and ill. Exploring the pressure points of the digital condition more closely, Safiya Umoja Noble scrutinizes the ways in which algorithmic processes, notably those that drive Google’s search engine, are shaped by and sustain discriminatory regimes at the expense of vulnerable minorities. Finally, Roopika Risam’s critique interrogates the field of the digital humanities itself, which—notwithstanding good intentions—remains dominated by the Global North and is at risk of perpetuating the very power structures that it seeks to dismantle.
