Abstract:
This article outlines the popularity - and financial success - of an eighteenth-century Dublin puppet theatre that threatened mainstream theatres of the time. Randall Stretch’s puppet theatre, in Dublin’s Capel Street, became the centrepiece for satirical and political commentary of the day. Stretch’s theatre caught the attention of Dean Swift and his circle and is commemorated in satirical verse of the period. For decades, Dubliners used the phrase ‘This is more of Stretch’s Show’ to refer to anything outlandish or incredible. The article underlines the power of the puppet theatre as a satirical device and the extent to which it can rival mainstream theatre.

Campion, Zachary. "Speech in America: Tracking the Evolution of Speech Pedagogy in Theatre Training." VCU Scholars Compass, 2013. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/3297.

Full text
Abstract:
Speech work, as it relates to actor training, has undergone many important changes since its formal introduction to the field over a century ago by Edith Skinner. Unfortunately, there are many who hold on to antiquated, misinformed and often harmful approaches to this kind of training. This thesis questioned the traditional models of speech pedagogy by creating a narrative for its development, questioning its efficacy, and exploring the alternatives that have developed over the years. I looked at the texts and approaches of Edith Skinner, Patricia Fletcher, Louis Coliaini, and Dudley Knight/Phil Thompson. I acknowledge that each practitioner has made a substantial contribution to the field. In this thesis I question what place each has in the future of speech pedagogy in America. I gathered opinions from both critics and proponents of each work in the hopes of creating a more cohesive understanding of how speech pedagogy should be handled in the future according to those who will be teaching it. This thesis includes considerable usage of phonetic symbols found on the International Phonetic Alphabet establish by the International Phonetic Association.

Abstract:
Abstract The point of diffusing subversive philosophical ideas in a Spinozistic context was to assist men and women to live richer, more fulfilling lives by freeing them from their misconceptions, by enlightening sufficiently to free men from tyrants, exploiters, and theologians. But acquiring adequate ideas philosophically is arduous work and Spinoza recognizes that few are capable of it. Fortunately, there are other, more broadly appealing, ways to strengthen humanity’s disposition, enabling men and women to learn to see through “superstition” and adopt a useful and good plan of life. This chapter considers Spinoza’s friends’ involvement in the Amsterdam theatre and poetry society Nil Volentibus Arduum and its effort to reform the Amsterdam theatre and set new standards for the arts, and art and literary criticism more generally and also analyses Meyer’s philosophical approach to “the passions” and relates this to Spinoza’s treatment of the passions in his Ethics.
