Abstract:
The racist rhetoric that correlates certain humans with nonhumans has re-entered popular discourse in light of recent rat infestations in Baltimore and the immigration crisis. Scholars have long studied human relationships to nonhuman nature. Other scholars have brought to light the role of power in shaping identity. However, they have often failed to connect these histories without reinforcing dehumanization among marginalized communities. Feminist new materialists have looked at the enmeshment of humans within gendered nonhuman environments; posthumanists have shown that humans are made up of more-than-human assemblages; and queer theorists have emphasized the ways in which normative conceptions of the human fail to recognize the diversity of human expression. To contend with challenges facing non-normative people who are forced to endure harmful human-animal entanglements today, I use the figure of the pest to disassociate these racist discourses while also re-imagining how we see these much-hated animals. This dissertation examines human-pest relations as they play out materially, in actual infestations, rhetorically, across the political stage, and affectively, through paranoia. Using a visual studies methodology, I detangle the structural reasons for why infestations are more likely to persist among people with multiply marginal identities. Additionally, I look to art that resists such constructions. My project analyzes an assortment of varied archives from a 19th century rat nest to documentaries that feature the subculture of so-called bug chasing during the AIDS epidemic. Theoretically, this project juxtaposes feminist new materialist inquiry with Black, Latinx, and queer studies in order to study the work that objects can do to dismantle human-nonhuman value systems. "The Multi-Species Entanglements of Blackness: Infestations from the Coasts of West Africa to the American City" follows rat infestations from the slave ship to present-day poor, black neighborhoods in order to show how material infestation develops as a form of racism built into the structures of slavery and segregation. I highlight how these interspecies intimacies assisted in telling stories about enslaved life that would otherwise be lost to archival bias. "No Cockroaches at the U.S.-Mexico Border: Resisting Rhetoric in Queer Latinx Performance" reveals the ways in which human-pest comparison through immigration rhetoric has a long history stemming from early 20th century immigration reform and the rise of the eugenics movement. Even so, artists Xandra Ibarra and Carmelita Tropicana have used performing as a cockroach to surmount xenophobia. "Deviant Bed Bug Performances: Paranoia as Queer Affect," demonstrates how affect, specifically paranoia, can be queered through humorous bed bug-themed musicals to create equity among species. The last chapter, "A How-To Guide for Making Pest-humanist Art," looks to four living, female artists who use their work to develop alternative modes of responding to nonhuman life. Together, these chapters establish "pest-humanism," an analytic that critiques the structural histories of violence exposed by examining human-pest relationships and enables the development of social justice art which pays heed to the nonhuman in a responsible way.

Galway, Mary Alison. "Attitudes and Moral Development During a College Course on Human Sexuality." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/30445.

Full text
Abstract:
The goal of this research project was to understand better how classroom teaching, as purposeful social construction, can influence student attitudes in the direction of increased sensitivity to the diversity and complexity of issues involving human sexuality and individual choices. To develop this understanding, pre- and post-semester attitudes about the topics of gender, sexual orientation, sex education, and sexual coercion were gathered along with demographic information. Written end-of-class comments regarding the four topics were coded for evidence of level of moral development and factors contributing to cognitive effort and commitment to one's opinion. Demographic influences on attitudes included sex, in which women scored higher on average attitudes than men in the topics of gender, sexual orientation, and sexual coercion. Self-described religious background was significant in that religiously conservative participants scored lower in attitudes about sexual orientation than liberals or those with no religious background. Women scored significantly higher regarding the gender topic on relevance to own life, in favorability toward the presentation, and level of affect. Attitudes about sexual orientation and, to a lesser extent, sexual coercion changed over the semester in a direction of increased sensitivity to diversity and individual choice. Semester attitude differences were significantly higher than differences recorded for the single multimedia session early in the semester for sexual orientation, sex education, and sexual coercion, and for the single multimedia session late in the semester for sexual orientation. Attitudes were not influenced by affect or commitment to one's opinion, but attitude scores were significantly related to personal relevance, especially regarding gender and sexual orientation, life experience regarding sexual orientation, and favorability toward the class presentation for all topics. Repetitive exposure to information about sexual coercion was significant for higher attitude scores for participants reporting little prior exposure and considerable prior exposure, and lower attitude scores for participants reporting only some prior exposure. Level of moral development, significantly higher for women regarding sexual orientation and sexual coercion, was significantly and positively related to overall attitudes about sexual orientation and sexual coercion. Level of moral development scores were significant also regarding gender perspective-taking, favorability toward the class presentations on sexual orientation and sex education, repetitive exposure to a topic, distraction from the sexual orientation presentation, and cognitive effort exerted in considering the messages of the gender, sexual orientation, and sex education presentations.

Myrick, Melinda. "HUMAN SEXUALITY EDUCATION IN THE MIDDLE GRADES CLASSROOM: A REVIEW OF CURRICULA IN A SAMPLE OF FLORIDA SCHOOL DISTRICTS." Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2007. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/3221.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examined the extent to which human sexuality topics are covered in Florida middle school science classrooms and the process by which curricular decisions are made regarding human sexuality education on a county-wide basis. Primary data included interviews with county-level administrators who oversee curricular decisions related to the middle-grades science curriculum or health curriculum in twelve school districts within the state. These districts represented four geographic locations and districts of various sizes. Administrators from four of the twelve studies in the sample chose to provide information regarding their human sexuality education curriculum. In two cases, teacher leads were identified and were interviewed to understand the implementation of the curriculum within the classroom. Additional data were collected from the district curriculum guides for human sexuality education and the adopted middle-grades science textbook for each county. The interview and documentary data were analyzed by comparison to established criteria for a comprehensive human sexuality education curriculum. The analysis revealed that the scope of human sexuality education varied considerably within the sample and that much of the curricula in place failed to include topics and activities that have been identified as important in a successful human sexuality education program. These findings are limited because few counties chose to fully participate. Additional research is clearly needed to examine the effectiveness of existing human sexuality education curricula in Florida. In addition, research is needed to understand the characteristics, values, and beliefs of successful human sexuality education instructors across the state.

Abstract:
To examine parental attitudes toward sexuality education in the home and school, sealed packets were distributed to fifth and seventh graders (N = 609) for each to deliver home to a parent. Parents were asked to express level of agreement with a series of attitude statements and to indicate the content and timing considered appropriate for sexuality instruction in the home and school. Analysis of 246 returned surveys (40% response rate) indicated that most parents trust the school to address human sexuality, though a sizeable minority of parents hold very conservative attitudes toward sexuality instruction in this setting. Results suggested that the majority of parents view school-based instruction as supplemental to instruction in the home.

Sisco, Melissa Marie. "Enhancement of Sexual Boundaries: An Online Awareness Project." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/145379.

Full text
Abstract:
Five-hundred forty four students from an urban southwestern University underwent a sexual aggression beliefs and behaviors evaluation and subsequent online intervention. Approximately three-quarters of male and female students experienced a sexual boundary violation during the past year. Though male and female students were equally as likely to experience inappropriate sexual attention and/or contact, female students were significantly more likely to experience attempted and/or completed anal and vaginal rape and significantly most frequently after an explicit verbal indication of objection such as "no." Less than 10% of persons who experienced or enacted acts that met the legal threshold of a crime reported that the act would be defined as such. Thus, it may be that a large amount of college students are incapable of identifying personal victimizations or that sexually aggressive behavior has become more normative in the typical college sexual escapade. The modalities that were implemented exceeded those previously explored (i.e. lying and manipulating the victim directly) to include the use of technology, bets or dares, sexual scare tactics, and social vengeance. When the mechanisms for sexual aggression were explored, it appeared that aggressors typically acted out due to availability of victims and difficulty controlling their sexual urges, thus, traditional awareness efforts that attempt to alter attitudes in an effort to prevent sexual aggression seem ill-fitted to the college population. However, difficulty discerning objection from consent was associated with an increased risk of victimization, self-blame for victimization, and cognitive justification for aggressive behavior. Personality played a major role in intervention receptivity; students who were conscientious were more capable of changing and sensing personal change. Feeling `changed', being high on Psychopathy, and having pre-set ideas regarding rape myths of the opposite sex or pre-existing difficulties deciphering objection from consent impeded intervention receptivity.

Waldman, David Kenneth. "A Situational Analysis of Human Rights and Cultural Effects on Gender Justice for Girls." ScholarWorks, 2011. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/913.

Full text
Abstract:
Evidence suggests that despite repeated mandates by the United Nations (UN) for gender equality, local gender justice for girls has been elusive. Conceptually drawn from Merry's human rights-cultural particularism dissonance and Sen's comparative justice theories, the purpose of this grounded theory study, supported by Clarke's situational analysis, was to investigate how local religious and cultural practices impedes a gender equality outcome for girls. The primary research question involved identifying characteristics and situations of actors who focused solely on gender, culture, and human rights issues at the international and national level. A qualitative research design was used in this study of 8 experts in gender, human rights, and cultural issues who were interviewed in-depth in person and on the telephone. A line-by-line analysis of participants' responses identified specific sub theme situations related to the study that included sociocultural, socioeconomic, and intercultural elements. In addition, open and selected coding of participants' responses uncovered critical gender related themes that included democracy, political governance, and fatherhood responsibility. Implications for social change include indentifying a gender justice approach to human rights in which to implement integrated gender focused programs advocated by civil society and the UN to fill gaps left by governments. The findings suggest that obtaining children human rights is a function of the effect of a girl's access to gender justice and a culture's response to social development with an outcome of gender equality. This can result in advancement of gender justice, which research indicates can substantially improve local and global communities socially, economically, and politically.

Sandweg, Ginger S. "Maternal Involvement in Preschoolers' Sexuality Education: A Comparison of Single and Married Mothers." DigitalCommons@USU, 2003. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/2741.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examined the responses to a sexuality education questionnaire completed by 30 single mothers and 43 married mothers with preschool-aged children. Chi-square analyses were used to examine differences between married mothers and single mothers; mothers of males and mothers of females; and married mothers of males, married mothers of females, single mothers of males and single mothers of females. Age at which their preschool children first exhibited behaviors, frequency of that behavior, and comfort level of mothers' responses to those behaviors were addressed for each topic: male-female differences, reproduction and birth, privacy or modesty, taboo or obscene words, genital play, and sexual exploration play. Very few statistically significant differences were apparent in the comparisons that were made. Married mothers were more comfortable than single mother in responding to their child's questions about male-female differences and their child's use of taboo or obscene words. In addition, some interesting trends emerged. For instance, mothers tended to ex press more comfort when responding to hypothetical situations than when responding to actual situations. Questions about male-female differences, reproduction and birth, and privacy or modesty were responded to more frequently than questions about taboo or obscene words, genital play, or sexual exploration play. Moreover, maternal observation of behaviors that appeared to be more sensitive (and less comfortable, such as taboo or obscene words, genital play, and sexual exploration play) was lower than observation of less sensitive behaviors (male-female differences, privacy or modesty, and reproduction and birth). The implications of this study and directions for future research are discussed.

Abstract:
Using an experimental-comparison group design, data were collected at the beginning and end of a semester to assess the effect of a human sexuality course on students' sexual knowledge, sexual attitude, and sexual behaviors. Data analysis by t-tests showed statistical differences between the experimental and comparison group only on sexual knowledge scores ( p < .001), with the experimental group scoring higher. T-tests showed statistical difference between males and females in sexual attitude (p< .001) and sexual behavior (p< .001) with women scoring higher than men in the experimental group, and also when experimental and control groups were combined. Although not statistically significant, women scored higher in sexual knowledge than males.

Abstract:
This report relates the development of an investigation about teaching on human sexuality in the Nursing School of São Paulo University realized in 1984 and 1985. The study\'s objectives were as follows: to get the Nursing School teachers to develop a critical awareness about their teaching on human sexuality, through the emergence of contradictions; to propose and to promote actions for the surmounting of problems arising from this context, by assuming for themselves, the role of active agents (as opposed to passive) within their own education, in a dynamic and participative process. The methodology adopted was that of participant research, and the theoretical referential used was historical-structural-dialectical-materialism. The population selected was formed by nursing-teachers assembled together in one group, after having expressed a personal desire to participate in the research. The data were collected through two principal soucers: the disccurse (perceptions, values, opinions, beliefs) from the individual interviews, which were centred on the interviews herself; and that of the group discussions. The study revealed (as far as the group involved was concerned): that teaching on human sexuality in the Nursing School is non-existent even within the present curricular structure; that there is a lack of preocupation with teaching in this field within the institute; that these teachers\' feelings of incapacity in this area lead to reluctance to assume the responsibility of teaching, wich in turn leads to student\'s deficient preparation in relation to human sexuality. The development of this research disclosed the multidimensional nature of human sexuality; it permitted the criticism of the teaching reality the teachers themselves, who then became aware of certain contradictions, principally that between theory and pratice. Through this development some of these contradictions were overcome. Above all, it disclosed the anxiety of the teachers and their desire to overcome their inabilities, in arder to provide a nursing teaching that would be more critical, more aware, and more true.

The paper aims to understand how the human rights discourse and the sexual orientation and gender identity discourse overlap in the international realm, raising tensions and normativities which undermine different forms of being, living or thinking gender and sexuality and remove the political of these issues in the international arena. In this sense, the human rights discourse, as a pre-existing solution for various problems with focus on the individual and in a procedural view of justice, needs to be revaluated to overcome its Euro-American geography and the frequent debate between cosmopolitism and communitarianism. The way by which human rights are applied demands static subjects that are also reinforced by the sexual orientation and gender identity discourse, reaffirming the western binaries of gender and sexuality and their normativities. Rights related to sexuality and gender are approached as another generation of human rights, having as reference documents like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and neglecting contingent dialogues in social exchange. The paper dialogues with a radical and collective perspective of human rights, sexuality and gender to recover the political of these issues and the notion of social justice, as well as to consider the multiple constitutions of subjects around the world. In sum, a first part of this paper works with the silence of IR theories about the above-mentioned themes and, then, in a second part, the problems and alternatives are thought with focus on the practice of international relations in international forums.

Abstract:
The thesis was designed to determine the relative impact of an academic course in human sexuality on specific sexual attitudes and intimate communication skills of undergraduate college students.Seventy-five students were subdivided into experimental and control groups. Data regarding personal sexual anxiety, sexual decision making skills and level of comfort about sexual issues were collected during the first and last weeks of the Spring 1990 semester. These served as pre and posttests. Descriptive data about the subjects were also obtained. The results of this study indicated that although males and females differ significantly from each other in sexual anxiety and sexual decision making skills, the subjects did not differ in their level of comfort. However, experimentalfemales did approach significant change in their reported comfort level scores from pre to posttest.

Price-Tebbutt, Nicola Vernier. "Re-imagining the theology of human sexuality in the Methodist Church : the use of narrative in theological methodology." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2016. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/7801/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis proposes the development of a narrative methodology in the British Methodist Church. Such a methodology embraces and communicates both felt experience and critical theological thinking, thus producing and presenting a theology that might have a constructive transformative impact on wider society. In chapter one I explore the ways in which the Church speaks in public, identify some of the challenges it faces, and consider four models of engagement. If the Church is to engage in public discourses then I argue that its words need to be relevant and connect with people’s experiences. To ground the thinking I focus on the context of the British Methodist Church and explore how the Church engages in theological reflection through the lens of its thinking on issues of human sexuality. Chapter two reviews how theological reflection is undertaken in the British Methodist Church. I describe how the Methodist Quadrilateral of Scripture, tradition, reason and experience remains a foundational framework for theological reflection within the Methodist Church and consider the impact of institutional processes and the ways in which the Methodist people actually engage with theological thinking. The third and fourth chapters focus on how the British Methodist Church has produced its theology of human sexuality, giving particular attention to the use of personal and sexual stories in this process. I find that whilst there has been a desire to listen to the stories of the Methodist people, there has not been a corresponding interrogation or analysis of their stories so as to enable robust and constructive theological reflection on these experiences. Using resources from Foucauldian approaches to discourse analysis, I critique key statements and the processes involved in their production, offering an analysis of this body of theological thinking and indicating where possibilities for alternative ways of thinking and acting arise. The proposed methodology draws upon resources from social science methodologies, and in chapter five I look at the use of personal experience and relevant strategies of inquiry that prompt reflection on the hermeneutical process and employ narrative approaches in undertaking, analysing and presenting research. The exploration shows that qualitative research methodologies offer resources and methods of inquiry that could help the Church to engage with personal stories in its theological thinking in a robust, interrogative and imaginative way. In chapter six an examination of story and narrative is undertaken, to show how they have been understood as ways of knowing and how they relate to theological inquiry. Whilst acknowledging some of the limitations of narrative, I indicate how it offers constructive possibilities for theological reflection and could be a means for the British Methodist Church to engage in public discourse. This is explored further in chapter seven, which looks in more detail at how the British Methodist Church has used narrative in its theological thinking, and outlines areas requiring further attention in order for a narrative theological methodology to be developed, namely: attention to the question ‘whose experience?’; investigation of issues of power and the dynamics involved in the process of the production of theological thought; how personal stories and experiences are interrogated and how narrative is constructed; and how narrative might be employed within the Methodist Quadrilateral. The final chapter considers the advantages and limitations of such an approach, whether the development of such a method is possible in the Methodist Church today and its potential for helping the Church to engage in public discourse more effectively. I argue that this methodology can provoke new theological insights and enable new ways of being in the world.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to examine if early preventive work, focusing on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), can promote a decreasing need for future social work. Furthermore, the purpose is to examine preschool as a context for this kind of work, and whether students becoming preschool teachers experience that they have received adequate knowledge about SRHR. More importantly this also includes their perceived ability to pass the knowledge on to the preschool children. The study has a qualitative approach and is based on semi structured interviews with four students from two different university studying to preschool teachers. Earlier studies and the empirical result both display a lack of knowledge and interventions concerning SRHR from a broad perspective. Reasons for this includes the belief that the subject is taboo or not age appropriate. This eventuates in teachers not having the right tools how to handle situation concerning this area. Earlier research in this area is sparse, but it exist a demand from preschool teachers on how to provide an age adequate, curricula-based, comprehensive sexuality education. However, both this study and earlier research also show a positive potential of SRHR starting to become a prioritized topic in earlier ages. After all, the knowledge about SRHR is a human right for all the kids.

Burns, Robert Jonathan. "On the Limits of Culture: Why Biology is Important in the Study of Victorian Sexuality." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2007. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/english_diss/13.

Full text
Abstract:
Much recent scholarship in Victorian studies has viewed sexuality as historically contingent and constructed primarily within the realm of discourse or social organization. In contrast, the following study details species-typical and universal aspects of human sexuality that must be adequately theorized if an accurate model of the ideological forces impacting Victorian sexuality is to be fashioned. After a short survey of previous scholarly projects that examine literature through the lens of biology—much of it marred by an obvious antipathy toward all attempts to discover the involvement of ideology in human behavior—this study presents a lengthy primer to the modern study of evolutionary psychology, behavioral genetics, and human sexuality. Because the use of science is still relatively rare in literary studies, the first chapters are designed both to convince the reader of the necessity of considering biology and evolution in examining human sexuality, as well as to provide the general educated scholar in our field with the basic framework of knowledge necessary to follow the remainder of the text. Chapter three follows with a detailed examination of the sources of the political resistance to biological and genetic models of human behavior within liberal arts and social science departments, and chapter four presents an evolutionary and biochemical model for the apprehension of art that locates the origins of culture within the evolutionarily-fashioned brains of individuals and attempts to recuperate the concept of aesthetic emotion and foreground the special nature of erotica in its ability to produce immediate neurochemical effects in the brains of its consumers. Finally, the study examines works of Victorian literature, especially My Secret Life, to demonstrate the deficiencies in constructionist and interactionist theories of human sexuality while detailing the new readings that emerge when one is aware of the biological basis of human mate selection mechanisms.

Abstract:
Nyckelord:
Background: Human immunodeficiency virus, HIV, is a virus that attacks the immune system of the body. Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, AIDS, develops from HIV if it is left untreated. There is a lack of knowledge and fear in the community, which creates stigmatization and discrimination towards the disease. This is affecting those who are living with it daily. The attitude towards HIV-infected individuals is negative. Some nurses are not willing to care for persons with HIV because of fear and lack of knowledge. The diagnosis alters the person’s previous life and to deal with the disease is not easy. Aim: The aim was to describe how it is to live with HIV/AIDS in the Nordic countries. Method: The literature review was based on six quantitative and seven qualitative articles chosen to get a deeper understanding and an overview of knowledge about how it is to live with HIV/AIDS in the Nordic countries. Result: The analysis resulted in three categories that together formed an overview of the life with HIV/AIDS. These categories are; adjusting to a new life, keep secret or come out and limited sexuality. Stigmatization affected the individuals’ view of themselves and their decisions concerning disclosure. Conclusion: People living with HIV are often countered with ignorance, prejudice and distance, therefore the encounter is important. The literature review contributes with information and knowledge that can be used by health professionals to receive a deeper understanding for people living with HIV. Nurses should have knowledge about HIV/AIDS to be able to provide good care. Lack of knowledge and prejudices in the community was considered worse than the disease itself.

Abstract:
The constant evolution of ICT changes the habits and way of life of today´s generation. At the same time, it affects their sexuality and the associated sexual life. Generation Y represents the generation of young people who come into contact with ICT from the young age and excel in high-level information literacy. This diploma thesis is offering a comprehensive view of the impact of ICT on Generation Y in terms of human sexual-ity and pornography. The social research brings findings on ICT usage issues in differ-ent places (at work, at university, etc.), security and privacy protection in the virtual world, and ICT pornography. The research of studies from foreign countries passes to the author´s own research. It also reflects new trends in ICT; the 3D virtual reality. In the final part of the diploma thesis the author discusses and compares the results ob-tained by his own research with foreign studies. At the same time, author´s own find-ings are formulated. Author is also proposing questions that could form the basis of research at the organisational level.

Abstract:
This thesis is an analysis of some research undertaken with students in a unit on human sexuality. It is a critical account of an experiment with 'radical' pedagogy which deliberately forsakes the pessimistic determinism of social reproduction theory in education and assumes the fundamental optimism of resistance theory, wherein human actors are capable of penetrating oppressive ideology and practice and working towards emancipation and social change. The experiment is an attempt to implement radical pedagogy in a particular classroom, and the body of the thesis consists of a critique of data collected from participants' notes and transcriptions of video and audio-tapes of thirteen, twohour class sessions. The first chapter of the thesis outlines the nature of a pedagogical style which could be described as counterhegemonic, non-reproductive, or liberatory, and it specifies the elements of a 'radical' approach to classroom process and content, which is distinguished from a 'traditional' one. Subsequent chapters present a critical analysis of actual classroom 'content' and 'process', which is based on a study of reconstructed sessional data, and the final chapter discusses the factors which limited the 'success' of the experiment, and attempts to draw some conclusions about the liberatory possibilities of radical pedagogy.

Abstract:
A developmental-contextual approach to understanding sexuality education course content is used in this national study. Examining policy as a factor that may influence young people's environments and hence their development is an important role for developmental research. Using data from the CDC's School Health Policies and Programs Study (SHPPS) 2000 and the Alan Guttmacher Institute's State Policies in Brief Report (Alan Guttmacher Institute, 2001), three general topic areas are addressed. First, can school level be differentiated by the sexuality education topics taught at various school levels? Second, are there significant differences in state policies that regulate school-based sexuality education targeting different school levels? Third, how do state and classroom level variables contribute to variance in the likelihood of a given topic being taught as part of school health education? The two sources of data provide a nationally representative sample of 1,201 teachers and state level data from Department of Education administrators and policies from all 50 states. These data were analyzed using stepwise discriminant analysis and Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM). This study resulted in three primary findings. First, both state policies and classroom content were significantly different by school level. Second, state policy was not a good predictor of the course content being taught in the classroom. Third, teachers' desires for additional training significantly predicted the sexuality education course content taught in schools. Implications for both research and practice were discussed.

Abstract:
This is a critical discourse analysis research project that examines the print and television advertisements of Merck & Co.’s Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine GARDASIL®. There are three commercial campaigns identified for this project: “Make the Connection/ Charm4Life,” “Tell Someone,” and “One Less/ I Choose.” Two print and two television commercials per campaign are analyzed. I used black feminist and girls studies theoretical frameworks to address how representations of race, class, “girl power,” and the cooptation of feminist language are both expressed and utilized in the marketing as a method to target consumers. I conclude with “parody/ protest” advertisements of the vaccine featuring young women demonstrating a critical consumer voice towards the marketing of the vaccine. As a result, I found that the PSAs used fear-driven messages about HPV’s link to cervical cancer beginning a year before the FDA’s approval of GARDASIL® in order to market and sell its product.

Sex enrobed in sexuality has become a lucrative business. It has opened the way for investments in people as human capital through discussions based on health and religion. The objective of this work is to present how the reappraisal of sexuality – based on the concept of dispositif as defined by Michel Foucault – facilitated by the modulation and accommodation of practices considered as subversive in rights that are negotiable within the market. Thus, the range of investments in the normalized population's behavior was broadened. The production of comprehensive concepts related to sexual health – in partnership between State, religion and international organizations – enabled investments in calculating a mortified life. This work is presented in three series. The first serie, entitled "games of truth (production of identities, rights and education in the field of sexuality)" focuses on the United States and San Francisco Bay Area. It presents some of the disputes over truths around identities; the production of knowledges in the light of these truths; market negotiations and the relationship between education; and investment in human capital. In the second serie, "productions of desires (new investments in the sex market in Brazil)", the Erótika Fair, in São Paulo, presents itself as a profitable field for the analysis of the production and assimilation of desires, justified by the introduction of the female audience into this market. The analysis situates the assimilation of concepts within the marketplace that translates the personal relationships into business and takes these businesses into the personal field. Finally, "sexual morality (religion and health)," highlights the investments of Christian churches in the guidance of behavior, focusing on the analysis of evangelical groups, and their articulation within international guidelines on sexual health. And how the HIV/AIDS context is used to justify education programs for children and young people, of a calculated life, in which they abdicate so-called deviations in the present in the name of the promise of a better future

This study investigates the domains and boundaries of sexuality education between two educational fields: sexuality education and family life education. The goal was to understand how scholars and practitioners in these fields conceptualize sexuality education. The journalistic questions of Who, What, When, For whom, and Why were identified within each field by using the constant comparative method to complete a content analysis of publications by scholars and by interviewing certified professionals in each field. Through the lens of Social Constructionism Theory and a Phenomenological Approach, this study helped clarify the similarities and differences of two professional fields, in turn, advancing each field. Results indicated that sexuality education and family life education are similar in many ways; it is the approach that each takes that makes them different. Sexuality education takes a holistic approach while family life education takes a contextual approach when teaching sexuality education. This approach, in turn, affects the rest of the education, including the domains that were identified.

Abstract:

Sexuality education in public schools in the United States excludes a large population of students. These exclusions are due to a long history of legal and economic battles, as well as the politicized nature of adolescent sexuality. This critical interpretive inquiry explored the long history of sexuality education through the lens of economics, law, and psychological paradigms and examined the way in which each of these lenses furthered the exclusion of nonheterosexual males in curricula. Using a framework comprised of critical feminist theory, critical pedagogy, and queer theory, this manuscript provides an understanding of the social structures of sexuality education and how they continue to marginalize students labeled as “other.” Using critical discourse analysis, this study reviewed legal and political documents, state and private curricula, and works in the sociology and psychology fields.

The outcomes of interpretive research do not lend themselves to specific answers, but to a greater understanding of the experience of marginalized individuals and the structures in place that keep this experience intact. Through a critical review of current programming initiatives, recommendations are made to continue moving toward a more gender- and identity-inclusive sexuality education curriculum. These recommendations, which are grounded in current legal and economic requirements, include teacher certification requirements, implementation of the Advocates for Youth 3Rs curriculum, utilization of a rights-based approach to program design, and adoption of national sexuality education by the Department of Health and Human Services, rather than by the Department of Education.

This study had as its aim to understand the constitution of the subjective sense of sexuality in elderly persons, supported by Gonzaléz Rey s subjective theory and Vygotsky s historic-cultural psychology. Both approches the history of the developing person. The qualitative method was utilized, whose principles are state as follows: knowledge is a constructivist-interpretative production; production has an interactive character; the singularity has a legitimate level of the knowledge production. Three female and a male students from the Third Age Open University- Goiás Catholic University (UCG) were extensively interviewed. The instruments used were: dynamic conversation and sentence completion. As its main result it was observed that the sexuality in persons with 60 years of age and over may be tangled with the subjective sense generated by the person in the trajectory of his/her life and can be experienced as: health, self-esteem, personal achievement, affectivity and fellowship, naturalization of the decline of the sexual desire or, ever, the exclusion of sexual activity. It was concluded therefore, that the process of sexuality development in the elderly is singular.

This study explores women´s experiences when receiving their HPV-positive pap smear result as a letter. The Swedish screening programme for the prevention of cervical cancer notifies of the result in a short, standardised letter. After including human papilloma virus (HPV) in the analysis in 2014 women appeared to become more worried about the result showing a sexually transmitted infection (STI). An interview study was performed with eight women and the empirical data was analysed with reception theory. The study-results show which feelings women struggled with, whether they experienced a negative impact on their sexuality, and whether they were content with a letter as communication method for their results. Ignorance of HPV and fear of cancer were central findings. Women even described a change in attitude towards sexual practices other than vaginal intercourse. The result letter was considered to be too short and not as informative as needed. This caused all the women to look for more information foremost on the internet in order to find answers to their questions. In conclusion there is a need for thorough and structured information related to HPV and impact on the cervix. Healthcare system personnel should have a sensitive ear for women´s concerns about their pap smear results.

This research seeks to understand how teachers and assistants of the SME of Goiânia develop (or not) the sexual education of children, as well as seek guidelines for an emancipatory education that contemplates sex education in child education spaces. For this, it is sought to understand human sexuality from a historical perspective, since sexuality is something inherent to the human being and is present from early childhood. It is also considered the strong influence of religion and hygienist medicine on the sexuality of the people, as well as the public policies that were somehow predecessors of the education currently developed in the Municipal Centers of Early Childhood Education (CMEIs) ) of Goiânia, as well as the lack of clear legislation and guidelines on sexuality in early childhood education. Thus, it was sought to answer: What practices and / or needs of educational professionals of the Municipal Education Network (RME) of Goiânia, with a view to an emancipatory child sexual education? In the methodology, we opted for a field research, with a qualitative-quantitative approach. First we did a literature review and a literature review. The locus of the research is the SME of Goiânia, through one of its CEIs and one of its CMEIs. We have 30 respondents from two units of Early Childhood Education, corresponding to more than 40% of the total of professionals from both units. Subsequently, we conducted interviews with twelve teachers from both Centers. The research results pointed out that the education professionals surveyed have a certain difficulty in working with sexuality. Expressive 31.8% of the education professionals of the CMEI Verde and 41.2% of the professionals of the CIE Amarelo revealed that they face taboo to approach the theme. In addition, several factors - such as family education, religious orientation, parental posture, lack of an educational policy in the units observed and lack of adequate training - compromise the effective implementation of a child sexual education. It was emphasized, above all, that in Brazilian society, religion of a Christian nature played and still plays a major role both in the sexual behavior of the families and in public policies. Moreover, with such a historical heritage, the difficulties faced by children's sexual education in the formal education spaces for children, especially from the emancipatory perspective.

Abstract:
The present study aims to show the effects of heterocisnormativity in the life of non-heterosexual and non-cisgender individuals whose existential trajectories are marked by the crime-madness injunction. In order to do so, it explores criminal cases that delimit the lives of people in mental suffering who committed crimes, the so-called judicial patients, who receive a measure of security. Using genealogy as a methodological contribution, it enters the conditions of provenance and emergency of the "abnormal", a figure produced and captured by the medical-legal discourse through a long process of psychiatry of desire and sexuality that occurred throughout the 19th century to the present days. Legitimized from a certain scientific rationality, this discursive plot morally criminalizes the expressions of sexuality and gender, sticking them together, to throw them into the field of abjection The study was composed of two strategies of approximation of the research field: 1) narratives produced from the daily routine of a deinstitutionalization program of judicial patients to which the researcher is linked; 2) six judicial papers, with emphasis on the psychiatric reports, of non-heterosexual and / or of non-cisgender individuals that received a security measure. The analysis of the collected material allows verifying that the theoretical-conceptual basis of the presumption of dangerousness on which the thesis of the security measure is based is objectified in the psychiatric report. Such medical-juridical mechanism expresses a moral valuation with which the expressions of the sexuality and gender of the judicial patient considered "deviant" are evaluated. Finally, alternatives for the production of new models of treatment for the judicial patient, which seek to overcome the fiction of the presumption of dangerousness as a supposedly scientific basis, are reviewed, reviewing the non-attributability as a legal device that violates the inalienable rights of the subjects and, finally, include the guidelines of the Brazilian psychiatric reform among the guarantees of access to health for every citizen.

Keathley, Valerie J. "LIFE ON THE BIG SLAB: IDENTITY AND MOBILITY IN THE UNITED STATES TRUCKING INDUSTRY." UKnowledge, 2014. https://uknowledge.uky.edu/geography_etds/16.

Abstract:
Many changes have occurred in the United States trucking industry over the last thirty years. This study examines the effects of these changes by looking at three related themes: life on the road and life at home, body image and bodily health, and the experiences of women and sexual minorities in the industry. This research is based on a discourse analysis of interviews conducted with truck drivers and trucking industry leaders. Most truck drivers say that they value the independent nature of their workplace. Yet the independence that is a part of the trucker mystique is challenged by increased surveillance and the availability of more invasive surveillance technologies to motor carriers and the United States government. At the same time drivers face long periods of time away from home and they experience disconnection from their families. Families must learn to adapt to the absence of their trucking loved ones which is a difficult task. However, sometimes these adaptations can result in positive changes for partners at home, such as increased independence and more authority in the home. The bodies of truck drivers are also examined. Many drivers believe that their image as workers has taken a turn for the worst and the bodily presentation plays an important role in image. Drivers seek to set themselves apart from drivers who they think perpetuate negative images of their industry through sloppy dress and a lack of professionalism. At the same time, there is increasing evidence that the working conditions of this industry lead to unhealthy bodies that are diseased and worn out. Finally, very little has been written about women or gays and lesbians in this workplace. Women represent only five percent of this industry and they face significant barriers to surviving in this occupation because many male workers seek to marginalize them through exclusionary practices like sexual harassment. Members of the LGBT community are represented in the industry and find both comfort and exclusion in trucking. This work also examines the sexual subcultures in trucking such as sex workers and truck chasers.

Rhodes, Patricia Joan. "Older indigent women’s economic crimes: Subsuming feminism in favour of a human rights explanation." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2017. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/2024.

Abstract:
Many people today believe the concept of gender inequality is outmoded, irrelevant and unnecessary in Western societies that are deemed egalitarian. As a consequence, feminism as a movement with gender equality at its core has often been proclaimed ‘dead’,a relic of the past. Feminist perspectives, nevertheless, have produced differing points of view about the sources of gender inequality affecting crime rates and criminal behaviour. For the last 50 years or so, women and girls have been the subject of criminological research that has largely evolved from sociological perspectives and specifically from feminism. Although gender intersects with other social realities and disadvantages, it is a crucial factor in relation to offending behaviour. A substantial body of feminist literature confirmed that marginality and poverty are factors leading to female criminality. Using a sequential explanatory mixed methods design, this research explores the consequences of gender inequalities affecting older indigent Australian women convicted of acquisitive crimes. This thesis argues that the term ‘feminism’, and feminist discourse and communications, ought to be abandoned in favour of advancing the human rights framework in the 21st century. Stigma associated with the feminist label has been detrimental. The most significant finding in this research is that financial need rather than greed was a precursor to older women’s involvement in acquisitive crimes. Having primary custody of children after divorce and relying on welfare support were factors contributing to their impoverished status. The feminisation of poverty, the segregation of women into low-paid feminine occupations and an accumulation of disadvantages over the life course often contribute to women’s impoverishment in their later years. Potentially, law-abiding older women are put at risk of transgressing the law for the first time later in their lives to alleviate their poverty. From a human rights perspective, violations of the women’s rights were factors contributing to their offending behaviour. Gender inequality, a condition that disadvantages women, however, is alive and well in Australia as confirmed here and is an unrelenting feature of many male-dominated social structures throughout the world today. Since a great deal of negativity surrounds the feminist label, it would be more pragmatic to abandon the feminist label and adopt a human rights approach.
