Abstract:
The aim of this paper is a reading into Pannenberg`s theological anthropology, by systematizing the theme and demonstrating, through the aforesaid author, that the religious dimension is an essential constitutive of the human being. The background of the paper is modernity - man situated in a modern context. In a first moment, the study discusses the person´s spiritual and corporeal dimensions, pointing out their mutual integration, specifically in Christian biblical context. The essay inquires into the theme of the human being, embedding it in the context of social relations, showing the tension existing between the individual and society - openness and seclusion. In a second moment, the study points out freedom as an indispensable constitutive of the human and of true subjectivity. It is in the experience of freedom that it is possible to speak about man as conscience. Freedom as well as transcendence are presuppositions for man`s religious dimension; transcendence expresses man´s movement in his life as a spirit; it also constitutes the movement of history, especially in the Christian vision of man and history. This paper shows man as openness to God, and evinces the theological basis for such argumentation. This is where the study develops the theme of man as image and likeness of God in Pannenberg´s thought, and the relation between this imago Dei and the world. At this point, the paper faces the question about validity of the religious dimension, and the idea of trust and openness in religious context, so as to situate the person as a religious identity. Finally the study reaches its foundation on Jesus Christ. Jesus is the prototype of the human; he is the foundation of our freedom and its goal. Jesus is the one who reconciles man with God and with himself; in Jesus, man finds his plenitude as eschatological hope.

Abstract:
Among the diverse tasks performed by an intelligent distributed multi-camera surveillance system, person re-identification (re-id) is one of the most essential. Re-id refers to associating an individual or a group of people across non-overlapping cameras at different times and locations, and forms the foundation of a variety of applications ranging from security and forensic search to quotidian retail and health care. Though attracted rapidly increasing academic interests over the past decade, it still remains a non-trivial and unsolved problem for launching a practical reid system in real-world environments, due to the ambiguous and noisy feature of surveillance data and the potentially dramatic visual appearance changes caused by uncontrolled variations in human poses and divergent viewing conditions across distributed camera views. To mitigate such visual ambiguity and appearance variations, most existing re-id approaches rely on constructing fully supervised machine learning models with extensively labelled training datasets which is unscalable for practical applications in the real-world. Particularly, human annotators must exhaustively search over a vast quantity of offline collected data, manually label cross-view matched images of a large population between every possible camera pair. Nonetheless, having the prohibitively expensive human efforts dissipated, a trained re-id model is often not easily generalisable and transferable, due to the elastic and dynamic operating conditions of a surveillance system. With such motivations, this thesis proposes several scalable re-id approaches with significantly reduced human supervision, readily applied to practical applications. More specifically, this thesis has developed and investigated four new approaches for reducing human labelling effort in real-world re-id as follows: Chapter 3 The first approach is affinity mining from unlabelled data. Different from most existing supervised approaches, this work aims to model the discriminative information for reid without exploiting human annotations, but from the vast amount of unlabelled person image data, thus applicable to both semi-supervised and unsupervised re-id. It is non-trivial since the human annotated identity matching correspondence is often the key to discriminative re-id modelling. In this chapter, an alternative strategy is explored by specifically mining two types of affinity relationships among unlabelled data: (1) inter-view data affinity and (2) intra-view data affinity. In particular, with such affinity information encoded as constraints, a Regularised Kernel Subspace Learning model is developed to explicitly reduce inter-view appearance variations and meanwhile enhance intra-view appearance disparity for more discriminative re-id matching. Consequently, annotation costs can be immensely alleviated and a scalable re-id model is readily to be leveraged to plenty of unlabelled data which is inexpensive to collect. Chapter 4 The second approach is saliency discovery from unlabelled data. This chapter continues to investigate the problem of what can be learned in unlabelled images without identity labels annotated by human. Other than affinity mining as proposed by Chapter 3, a different solution is proposed. That is, to discover localised visual appearance saliency of person appearances. Intuitively, salient and atypical appearances of human are able to uniquely and representatively describe and identify an individual, whilst also often robust to view changes and detection variances. Motivated by this, an unsupervised Generative Topic Saliency model is proposed to jointly perform foreground extraction, saliency detection, as well as discriminative re-id matching. This approach completely avoids the exhaustive annotation effort for model training, and thus better scales to real-world applications. Moreover, its automatically discovered re-id saliency representations are shown to be semantically interpretable, suitable for generating useful visual analysis for deployable user-oriented software tools. Chapter 5 The third approach is incremental learning from actively labelled data. Since learning from unlabelled data alone yields less discriminative matching results, and in some cases there will be limited human labelling resources available for re-id modelling, this chapter thus investigate the problem of how to maximise a model's discriminative capability with minimised labelling efforts. The challenges are to (1) automatically select the most representative data from a vast number of noisy/ambiguous unlabelled data in order to maximise model discrimination capacity; and (2) incrementally update the model parameters to accelerate machine responses and reduce human waiting time. To that end, this thesis proposes a regression based re-id model, characterised by its very fast and efficient incremental model updates. Furthermore, an effective active data sampling algorithm with three novel joint exploration-exploitation criteria is designed, to make automatic data selection feasible with notably reduced human labelling costs. Such an approach ensures annotations to be spent only on very few data samples which are most critical to model's generalisation capability, instead of being exhausted by blindly labelling many noisy and redundant training samples. Chapter 6 The last technical area of this thesis is human-in-the-loop learning from relevance feedback. Whilst former chapters mainly investigate techniques to reduce human supervision for model training, this chapter motivates a novel research area to further minimise human efforts spent in the re-id deployment stage. In real-world applications where camera network and potential gallery size increases dramatically, even the state-of-the-art re-id models generate much inferior re-id performances and human involvements at deployment stage is inevitable. To minimise such human efforts and maximise re-id performance, this thesis explores an alternative approach to re-id by formulating a hybrid human-computer learning paradigm with humans in the model matching loop. Specifically, a Human Verification Incremental Learning model is formulated which does not require any pre-labelled training data, therefore scalable to new camera pairs; Moreover, the proposed model learns cumulatively from human feedback to provide an instant improvement to re-id ranking of each probe on-the-fly, thus scalable to large gallery sizes. It has been demonstrated that the proposed re-id model achieves significantly superior re-id results whilst only consumes much less human supervision effort. For facilitating a holistic understanding about this thesis, the main studies are summarised and framed into a graphical abstract.

Anzellotti, Stefano. "The representation of person identity in the human brain." Thesis, Harvard University, 2014. http://dissertations.umi.com/gsas.harvard:11397.

Full text
Abstract:
Every day we encounter a variety of people, and we need to recognize their identity to interact with them appropriately. The most common ways to recognize a person's identity include the recognition of a face and of a voice. Recognizing a face or a voice is effortless, but the neural mechanisms that enable us to do so are complex. The face of a same person can look very different depending on the viewpoint and it can be partly occluded. Analogously, a voice can sound very different when it is saying different words. The neural mechanisms that enable us to recognize a person's identity need to abstract away from stimulus differences that are not relevant for identity recognition. Patient studies indicate that this process is executed with the contribution of multiple brain regions (Meadows, 1974; Tranel et al., 1997). However, the localization accuracy allowed by neuropsychological studies is limited by the lack of control on the location and extent of lesions. Neuroimaging studies individuated a set of regions that show stronger responses to faces than other objects (Kanwisher et al., 1997; Rajimehr et al., 2009), and to voices than other sounds (Belin et al., 2000). These regions do not necessarily encode information about a person's identity. In this thesis, a set of regions that encode information distinguishing between different face tokens were individuated, including ventral stream regions located in occipitotemporal cortex and the anterior temporal lobes, but also parietal regions: posterior cingulate and superior IPS. Representations of face identity with invariance across different viewpoints and across different halves of a face were found in the right ATL. However, representations of face identity and of voice identity were not found to overlap in ATL, indicating that in ATL representations of identity are organized by modality. For famous people, multimodal representations of identity were found in association cortex in posterior STS.

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: David Hollenbach
What is the relationship between solidarity and human rights? In answering this question, this dissertation argues that human rights and solidarity are mutually dependent upon one another; and second, that the virtue of solidarity is habituated and cultivated through the practicing respect for human rights. In order to make this argument, this dissertation follows in three main parts. First, it examines recent Catholic social teachings (John XXIII to John Paul II) on the themes of human rights and solidarity. The purpose is to detail the development of teaching on human rights and solidarity and begin to examine the relationship between the two. Second, it seeks to provide a normative argument for a clearer relationship between solidarity and human rights through a deeper investigation of the human person as participatory in philosophical and theological anthropology. To accomplish this, I use the philosophical anthropology of Charles Taylor and a theological anthropology grounded in the imago dei, contemporary Trinitarian theologies and covenantal theology. Finally, it shows that understanding human rights and solidarity as foundational for the person has implications for ethical policy concerning human rights, through engagement with developmental economist and human rights theorist Amartya Sen. From this, I argue that human rights and solidarity are mutually dependent. It is my assertion that human rights cannot be realized without solidarity, and vice versa. Furthermore, one cannot acquire the virtue of solidarity, as a second nature, except through the praxis of respect for human rights. In this relationship between human rights and solidarity, I contend that Catholic social thought can offer an important contribution to the philosophical and political debates about moral obligations for human rights and the emerging responsibility to protect doctrine

Abstract:
Background: ALS is a constant progressive disease that causes reduced muscle function. This continues until the person is no longer able to move or speak and eventually affects the respiratory organs. This will ultimately lead to the person’s death. To suffer from an incurable disease is a life-changing transformation that puts great mental distress on both the affected person and on the person's relatives. Aim: The aim is to describe the experiences of people living with ALS. Method: This literature study has included eleven scientific papers taken from the databases CINAHL Complete and PubMed. The method has been designed by Friberg. The consensus concept the human being has been used. Results: The results of this literature study revealed four themes and two subthemes. These themes were The experience of not being in control, The experience of the physical loss and how to handle it (subtheme), The experience of not knowing what is going to happen (subtheme), The experience of social isolation, How help and information was perceived by the persons with ALS and Persons’ experience of how family relations are affected by ALS. Discussions: The results were discussed based on relevant scientific papers linked to Travelbee's definition of the human being. The dominating factors that were discussed from the results were a concern regarding the future and a negatively changed self-image, to maintain a positive attitude related to hope and isolation.

Abstract:
The gait of a person is often used as a biometric tool to identify or classify a person based on gender and age. Because of its ability to track a person from afar, gait recognition has found use in a variety of fields, including forensics, surveillance, and health monitoring departments. Biometric systems is a rapidly emerging area that necessitates the development of new methods to address problems that have plagued previous approaches. Human gait is a less-explored region in the field of biometrics. In this Project, two different types of gait datasets have been reported and presented. The FP (First Person) data carrying the camera motion collected from the movement of the volunteer's body and the TP (Third Person) data captured from a distant view were recorded at the same time. A total of 24 subjects (15 males and 9 females) are included in the dataset. The discussion is extended to include a comparison of the results obtained using TP and FP data. This report also provides an extensive survey of the stages involved in the framework of gait recognition by analysing the different methods used in each stage along with the description of the feature extraction process and the state-of-the-art techniques used in appearance-based and human-pose-based methods. Moreover, a brief comparative description on the recent data reduction or feature selection methods has been provided. Furthermore, it will provide a first-hand knowledge about the public datasets that is motion capture databases and the datasets simply used for human gait recognition. In comparison to other biometric methods, gait recognition has a lot of potential for future work, Researchers working in the fields of biometrics, human pose estimation, monitoring, human gait recognition and analysis will benefit from the review given in the survey.

Abstract:
Despite the advances of humanistic concepts in business research and practice, and the paradigmatic shift from economicism to humanism, existing leadership theory is insufficiently suited to provide solutions for a new humanistic economy as it adheres to an evidently non-humanistic logic. Therefore, this study first provides an overview of humanistic advances in business, as it aims at building a comprehensive leadership theory that is grounded in humanism. Our notion and definition of humanistic leadership is then contrasted against conventional leadership theo-ries to illustrate how they are concerned with the human person and how they oppose fundamen-tal humanistic leadership principles. Through abductively researching an in-depth case study of a firm with a humanistic organizational culture, we gather an understanding of how humanistic leadership works. By applying a summarizing qualitative content analysis, we identify the themes, dimensions and peculiarities of humanistic leadership. Finally, we provide a graphical model of humanistic leadership, which interconnects these themes and illustrates how humanistic leaders exercise self-leadership, how they approach and interact with employees, how they arrange the organizational environment, and that they are ultimately aiming for enabling employees’ self-leadership and fostering human evolvement. Hence, this study contributes to the research fields of humanism in business and leadership and offers vast possibilities for future research to further investigate how leaders can lead in a humanistic manner.

Abstract:
The term ‘person-centred’ is increasingly used in human services to define desirable approaches to service delivery for vulnerable groups of people. This multi-stage, iterative study uses a post-structuralist approach to build a conceptualisation of person-centredness with relevance across the ageing, disability, and mental health sectors. The resultant framework and conceptual model informs the application of person-centredness across policy, organisational and front-line practice contexts.

Abstract:
This thesis inquires into the meaning of the right to security of person. This right is found in many international, regional and domestic human rights instruments. However, academic discourse reveals disagreement about the meaning of the right. The thesis first considers case law from the European Convention on Human Rights, the South African Bill of Rights and the Canadian Charter. The analysis shows that courts too disagree about the meaning of the right to security of person. The thesis then takes a theoretical approach to understanding the meaning of the right. It is argued that the concept of ‘security’ establishes that the right imposes both positive and negative duties but that ‘security’ does not determine which interests are protected by the right. For this, we need consider the meaning of the ‘person’. The notion of personhood as understood in the ‘capabilities approach’ of Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum is then introduced. It is suggested that this theory could be used to identify the interests protected by the right. Next, the theoretical developments are applied to the legal context in order to illustrate the variety of interests the right to security of person would protect and the type of duties it would impose. As a result, it is argued that the idea of ‘security of person’ is too broad to form the subject matter of an individual legal right. This raises a question over the relationship between security of person and human rights law. It is proposed that instead of recognising an individual legal right to security of person, human rights law as a whole could be seen as a mechanism to secure the person, the capabilities approach determining what it takes to fulfil a right and thereby secure the person.

Di, Blasio Lina. "Rogers' concept of the fully functioning person: An adequate portrayal of human freedom?" Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/7637.

Full text
Abstract:
Carl Rogers, a leading figure in the Third Force Psychology, was keenly aware of the inadequacies of scientific psychology. He accurately observed that the main problem with psychology as a natural science is its approach, or philosophical presuppositions regarding the nature of the human being. For scientific psychology, persons are predetermined objects and human behaviour is nothing but causally determined reactions to external stimuli. In Persons or science: A philosophical question (1955) Rogers attempts to develop psychology into a human science. This science adopts a new approach, one which recognizes human freedom. From this new approach emerges his alternative view of the optimal human being, the fully functioning person. The purpose of this research is to explore the extent to which the Rogerian view of human freedom, as it is expressed in the concept of the fully functioning person, adequately establishes the specific difference between persons as free subjects and the determined objects of the natural sciences. The method adopted for this study is philosophical analysis. We will first situate Rogers in the historical and philosophical context in which he was trained and educated and which led him to oppose scientific psychology (chapter I). Next, the analysis (chapter II) will focus on the distinctive features of Rogers' fully functioning person. The evaluation (chapter III) will confront Rogers' attempt to develop a science of persons with the work of researchers known for their contribution in making psychology into a human science. These researchers are: Giorgi (1970), Luijpen (1962), and Strasser (1963). (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Abstract:
The current work defends the possibility of altering the civil register of transsexuals, so that it presents the name and gender appropriate to their claimed gender, even in the cases that sex reassignment surgery was not performed. Through a concept of transsexuality as an identity experience rather than a pathology and understanding gender as a complex concept, involving factors of physical, psychological and social order, the possibility of sexual selfdetermination is viewed as a constitutional right. Using a civil-constitutional hermeneutics, it is possible to allow a greater privacy and autonomy in relation to self-referring matters, especially in a State that have as its main pillars of it’s legal system the plurality and dignity of human beings. In this context, being gender identity one of identity components, allowing the right bearer self-determination, in a responsible and conscious manner is fully possible, even with the lack of a formal law regarding it, being it in fact a health right, in relation to its psychic aspect. The constitution, by creating a catalog of fundamental rights, assures private autonomy, allowing each one to decide about its life in matters regarding existential situations in a manner that fulfills its aspirations and values.

Abstract:
Inserted in a series of controversies, Religious Education discipline is usually perceived as unnecessary to the Brazilian educational system, going through a lack of understanding and respect by many educators and society itself. Several reasons lead to this positioning, among them, the lack of identity. This thesis aims to propose an identity for Religious Education under the look of theology based on the Christian concept of person. From this perspective, to concretize this objective, we performed a bibliographic study, with methodological procedures, to substantiate the worked concepts, which are: the five existing curriculum proposals used by the Brazilian educational system, issues concerning the secular state, religious freedom, relation between religion and secularization and the concept of person for some of the Science fields and for Christianity, as well as some concepts related to the pedagogic area: education, student, teacher, curriculum and methodology. Thus, they culminate in an identity and a curriculum proposal suggestion for the Religious Education befitting with what the Christian faith meant by person and the pedagogic and challenging vision of the presented liberating education, in which proposes a dialogic educational praxis, which takes into account the one who is the core of all teaching-learning process: the student. Lastly, this work seeks to indicate that Religious Education is that student s right, while an integral human being. Therefore, Religious Education, whereas confessional, plural and relational can be an undisputable contribution to Education.

Li, Jiawei. "Person re-identification with limited labeled training data." HKBU Institutional Repository, 2018. https://repository.hkbu.edu.hk/etd_oa/541.

Full text
Abstract:
With the growing installation of surveillance video cameras in both private and public areas, it is an immediate requirement to develop intelligent video analysis system for the large-scale camera network. As a prerequisite step of person tracking and person retrieval in intelligent video analysis, person re-identification, which targets in matching person images across camera views is an important topic in computer vision community and has been received increasing attention in the recent years. In the supervised learning methods, the person re-identification task is formulated as a classification problem to extract matched person images/videos (positives) from unmatched person images/videos (negatives). Although the state-of-the-art supervised classification models could achieve encouraging re-identification performance, the assumption that label information is available for all the cameras, is impractical in large-scale camera network. That is because collecting the label information of every training subject from every camera in the large-scale network can be extremely time-consuming and expensive. While the unsupervised learning methods are flexible, their performance is typically weaker than the supervised ones. Though sufficient labels of the training subjects are not available from all the camera views, it is still reasonable to collect sufficient labels from a pair of camera views in the camera network or a few labeled data from each camera pair. Along this direction, we address two scenarios of person re-identification in large-scale camera network in this thesis, i.e. unsupervised domain adaptation and semi-supervised learning and proposed three methods to learn discriminative model using all available label information and domain knowledge in person re-identification. In the unsupervised domain adaptation scenario, we consider data with sufficient labels as the source domain, while data from the camera pair missing label information as the target domain. A novel domain adaptive approach is proposed to estimate the target label information and incorporate the labeled data from source domain with the estimated target label information for discriminative learning. Since the discriminative constraint of Support Vector Machines (SVM) can be relaxed into a necessary condition, which only relies on the mean of positive pairs (positive mean), a suboptimal classification model learning without target positive data can be those using target positive mean. A reliable positive mean estimation is given by using both the labeled data from the source domain and potential positive data selected from the unlabeled data in the target domain. An Adaptive Ranking Support Vector Machines (AdaRSVM) method is also proposed to improve the discriminability of the suboptimal mean based SVM model using source labeled data. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Different from the AdaRSVM method that using source labeled data, we can also improve the above mean based method by adapting it onto target unlabeled data. In more general situation, we improve a pre-learned classifier by adapting it onto target unlabeled data, where the pre-learned classifier can be domain adaptive or learned from only source labeled data. Since it is difficult to estimate positives from the imbalanced target unlabeled data, we propose to alternatively estimate positive neighbors which refer to data close to any true target positive. An optimization problem for positive neighbor estimation from unlabeled data is derived and solved by aligning the cross-person score distributions together with optimizing for multiple graphs based label propagation. To utilize the positive neighbors to learn discriminative classification model, a reliable multiple region metric learning method is proposed to learn a target adaptive metric using regularized affine hulls of positive neighbors as positive regions. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. In the semi-supervised learning scenario, we propose a discriminative feature learning using all available information from the surveillance videos. To enrich the labeled data from target camera pair, image sequences (videos) of the tagged persons are collected from the surveillance videos by human tracking. To extract the discriminative and adaptable video feature representation, we propose to model the intra-view variations by a video variation dictionary and a video level adaptable feature by multiple sources domain adaptation and an adaptability-discriminability fusion. First, a novel video variation dictionary learning is proposed to model the large intra-view variations and solved as a constrained sparse dictionary learning problem. Second, a frame level adaptable feature is generated by multiple sources domain adaptation using the variation modeling. By mining the discriminative information of the frames from the reconstruction error of the variation dictionary, an adaptability-discriminability (AD) fusion is proposed to generate the video level adaptable feature. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:
This dissertation is the result of philosophical inquiry, inserted in the line of research ethics. This study further develops a raging debate in the context of bioethics, namely the manipulation of embryonic cells. However, the author doesn`t embarks their efforts on ethical consequences arising from new technologies produced by genetic engineering, but enters into the cause of the problem, ie, does it want to know whether the human embryo is a living being, human being, and especially people. So the author's main objective is to investigate the ontological and moral status of human embryo. In this context, investigates the concept of personal identity, examining it - briefly - in the light of two theories of the Philosophy of Mind: internalist, which advocates the construction of the self by internal bases, and the externalist, defending the construction of the self by external bases. It lists and analyzes the essential attributes that a person is conceived. It also searches the concept of the humans dignity and its relationship to the concept of person, based on Immanuel Kant`s moral philosophy, through his work Foundations of the Metaphysics of Morals. In this and the vast bibliography on the topic, the main source of the work is Practical Ethics, of the philosopher Peter Singer. It is worth mentioning that there are three dominant positions within this theme: a) Conception Theory, which argues that the embryo is a person from conception and therefore disallows any manipulation, b) Genetic, Developmental Theory, which defends the personhood of the embryo from different stages of their biological development and therefore supports biomedical research, c) Theory of the Potential of People, which advocates that the embryo does not have "personhood," however, is a potential human being and person, and therefore its integrity must be preserved. In the end, the author lists the main ethical, psychological, social and legal, since given the ontological and moral statutories of human embryo.

Gowda, Vidya. "Credibility of a Person-Centered Design Decision-making Prototype: Spaces for Older Persons with Vision Loss." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/81388.

Full text
Abstract:
Decline in both visual acuity and visual performance is a fact of life for older people and their increasing share of the population requires that buildings be designed with their visual needs in mind. As their field of vision decreases, people find it harder to identify an objects location, distance, and orientation. Elderly people with vision impairments usually find it harder to perform daily activities such as navigation through indoor spaces. Functional vision can be improved by modifying the design of spaces, for example, with better lighting. However, architects typically do not know how to take the needs of the visually impaired into account in their design process, or simply do not think of doing so. The researcher designed and feasibility-tested a prototype person-centered tool to help architects judge how appropriate a designed space will be for visually impaired people. The study was conducted as a qualitative mixed-methodology research analysis. The researcher used knowledge from literature interpretation to rationalize the development of a person-centered prototype. The researcher immersed design PhD students and vision science experts to inform the prototyping process. Along with an expert group of design and vision science professionals, the researcher beta-tested the prototype during a mock design-process scenario. The researcher also selected a small group of industry experts to participate in open-ended interviews on post-use demonstrations to qualitatively triangulate the findings on the prototypes usability. The study summarizes the feasibility including the challenges of using the prototype for professional purposes and suggests improvement.

Corti, Kevin. "Developing the cyranoid method of mediated interpersonal communication in a social psychological context : applications in person perception, human-computer interaction, and first-person research." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2015. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/3327/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis revisits Stanley Milgram’s “cyranoid method” of interactive social psychological experimentation (Milgram, 2010a) and explores the technique’s empirical potential in several domains. The central component of the method is speech shadowing, a procedure that involves a person (the shadower) repeating in real-time words they receive through an innerear monitor by-way-of radio-relay from a remote source. Speech shadowing effectively creates a hybrid agent (a “cyranoid”) composed of the body of one individual (the shadower) and the “mind” (or more precisely, the words) of another (the source). Interactants naïve to this manipulation perceive speech shadowers as autonomous communicators, and this perceptual bias (the “cyranic illusion”) affords researchers the ability to inspect the effects of separately altering the physical (outer) and dispositional (inner) elements of an interlocutor’s identity in contexts involving spontaneous and unscripted face-to-face dialog. Four articles and two additional chapters have been developed for this thesis. Chapter 1, “Introducing and situating the cyranoid method” presents an overview of the cyranoid method alongside an analysis of documents pertaining to the method contained in the Stanley Milgram Papers archive at Yale University and situates the method in the context of the demise of the classical paradigm, or “golden age,” of social psychology. Chapter 2 (Article 1), “Replicating Milgram” (published in the Journal of Social Psychology under the title “Revisiting Milgram’s cyranoid method: Experimenting with hybrid human agents”), examines the cyranic illusion through replications of two of Milgram’s original pilot studies and discusses the method’s potential as a means of conducting person perception. Chapter 3 (Article 2), “Echoborgs: Cyranoids with computer program sources” (published in Frontiers in Psychology under the title “A truly human interface: Interacting face-to-face with someone whose words are determined by a computer program”), expands upon the traditional cyranoid method by exploring situations wherein a conversational agent (a computer program designed to mimic a human interlocutor) sources for a human shadower, thereby producing a special type of cyranoid known as an “echoborg”; the article places the echoborg within the context of android science, a field that uses humanlike machines as stimuli in social psychological research in order to explore various aspects of human interaction (Ishiguro & Nishio, 2007). Chapter 4 (Article 3), “Using echoborgs to assess intersubjective effort in human-agent dialog” (accepted for publication pending minor revisions in Computers in Human Behavior), combines conversation analysis techniques (e.g., Schegloff, 1992, 1993) with the echoborg method to investigate factors that influence how people repair misunderstandings that arise during dialog with conversational agents. Chapter 5 (Article 4), “Cyranoids in first-person, self-experimental research” (published in Integrative Psychological and Behavioral Science under the title “The researcher as experimental subject: Using self-experimentation to access experiences, understand social phenomena, and stimulate reflexivity”), explores the history of researcher-as-subject self-experimentation in social psychology and illustrates how the cyranoid method can be used as a first-person means of directly experiencing the consequences of a transformed social identity through systematic self-experimentation. Finally, Chapter 6, “Cyranoid ethics,” discusses the various ethical concerns involved in cyranoid research, outlines how they were mitigated in the current thesis, and offers suggestions for ensuring positive research participant experience. As Milgram died before publishing any work on the cyranoid method, and as speech shadowing has seen relatively little application in social psychological experimentation, this thesis attempts to provide the initial basis for future iterations and variants of the method.

This dissertation explores the thought of H.T. Engelhardt Jr. since its production can dwell on the concept of human person, the key concept for resolving bioethical issues that arise in contemporary society characterized by intrinsic pluralism. After providing an overview of the characteristics of postmodern society and reading that gives Engelhardt, have been analyzed the fundamental points of his thought which supports a type of a minimal and procedural moral. In contrast to his setting, a proper semanticization of the concept of human person is essential to ensure the protection of every human being with respect to issues that arise around the beginning and the end of life and to reaffirm the power of human reason to understand in depth reality and provide a type of substancial moral. Finally the analysis of production of Engelhardt springing from a fideistic approach to the Christian faith is enlightening then to have a complete picture of his thought and to fully understand the roots of mistrust that he puts in reason.

Abstract:
This thesis introduces the concept of a person recognition system for use on an integrated autonomous surveillance camera. Developed to enable generic surveillance tasks without the need for complex setup procedures nor operator assistance, this is achieved through the novel use of a simple dynamic noise reduction and object detection algorithm requiring no previous knowledge of the installation environment and without any need to train the system to its installation. The combination of this initial processing stage with a novel hybrid neural network structure composed of a SOM mapper and an MLP classifier using a combination of common and individual input data lines has enabled the development of a reliable detection process, capable of dealing with both noisy environments and partial occlusion of valid targets. With a final correct classification rate of 94% on a single image analysis, this provides a huge step forwards as compared to the reported 97% failure rate of standard camera surveillance systems.

Abstract:
From the book of Genesis the human person is presented as divine image-bearer, a Godlike status that is further explained in terms of the dual constitution of matter and spirit. Natural Law provides a person-centred ethic that draws on a number of human goods that emanate naturally from the human person and lead in practice to human flourishing. This theory empowers towards making ethical decisions in the interest of human persons. Aristotle explained the human being as a substantially existing entity with rational powers. By means of his form-matter scheme he handed on, by way of Boethius, to Aquinas, a ready model for the Christian belief in the dual nature of the human person as an ensouled body or embodied soul. Applying the new scientific method to the question of the human self David Hume concluded that he could neither prove nor disprove her existence. By so reasoning Hume indirectly pointed to the need for other disciplines than empirical science to explain the human person. Emmanuel Levinas has drawn on the metaphysical tradition to draw attention to the social and ethical nature of the human person as she leaves the trace of her passing through the face of the other person who is encountered with an ethical gravitas of absolute demand. The genesis of the human person most naturally begins at conception at which point and onwards the human embryo grows continuously through an internal, animating principle towards a full-grown adult person. The main conclusion is that biblical anthropology and metaphysical philosophy provide the needed structures and concepts to explain adequately the full meaning of the human person and to establish the moral right of the human person at every stage to respect and protection.

Abstract:
Litigation in person is a widespread phenomenon in common law jurisdictions. A right to litigate in person is treated as a fundamental right, regardless of whether the litigant has the financial means to hire a lawyer or the capacity to conduct litigation effectively. Due to the high numbers of litigants in person and the various burdens placed on judicial resources by their lack of legal knowledge, they pose a serious challenge to the effective and efficient administration of justice. This thesis assesses the theoretical value of a right to self-representation, and challenges the position that courts should not impose legal representation on a litigant nor require him to obtain such representation as a condition for litigation. It argues that a litigant who lacks the professional knowledge and skills to present his case effectively cannot legitimately insist upon representing himself if in doing so he is likely to inflict disproportionate costs on his opponent and on the administration of justice. This thesis advances the case for mandatory representation in civil proceedings on three main fronts: a comparison with the criminal context, an assessment of the value of self-representation in terms of outcome, and an examination of its possible intrinsic justifications.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to propose an investigation related to the limits of private autonomy, taking into account the structure of the right to someone’s free use of his(her) own body as well as the possibility of the usage of bionics selfdevelopment of human body. Once a theoretical reference is identified in order to relate the corporal element to a normative concept of person, the protection of one’s personality may be directly referred to the protection of a personal identity. In this vein, a subjective right to one’s own body is proposed in analogy to the concept of sovereignty. Defining the autonomy in accordance with the dialectical relation between private and public autonomy, the criteria used to justify the intervention in the exercise of autonomy are based on two premises: i) the act of intervention is restricted to situations in which there are collateral effects of the specific autonomous act in other spheres of sovereignty and in the relational space and ii) it is possible to intervene in any sphere of free will if and only if the norms proposing the intervention can be the product of consensus of all participants in a rational discourse. Asserting that there is no identity at all between a person and the biological status of being human, it is logical to conclude that, even if the self is completely change by any kind of bionics technology, he or she will still remain a person. Even though the fusion of man and machine is within his (her) sphere of sovereignty, normative intervention is permitted in case of invading the sphere of sovereignty of another agent. In addition, so as to protect the relational space among different selves, normative intervention ought to be limited to the regulation of the use of upgrades. The purpose here is to preserve the personal autonomy of the agent as well as the autonomy and other interests from those not modified by the upgrades.

The right to a balanced environment, enshrined in CF88, is considered a fundamental right, in that it harnesses the dignity of the human person in order to protect the healthy quality of life of the human person. Although not conceptualise the environment, the CF88 (art. 225) gives the expression a comprehensive and systemic view, involving ecological, social, economic, spatial, cultural and political factors. Thus, the realization of this fundamental right presupposes Sustainable Development, adopted as a model for national development and condition for the exercise of human dignity. In this sense, derives from the right to a balanced environment a set of state and social duties of ensuring the quality of life, in a systemic perspective. Thus, the State has mechanisms and instruments that enable the promotion and execution of actions that search, among them, the establishment of protected areas (PAs), established in accordance with the methods and legal criteria of National System of Units Conservation of Nature (SNUG), to be mandatorily followed by the Government. As a system, the SNUG aims, ultimately, to safeguard the environment, therefore, set out to regulate article 225, Â 1, sections I, II, III and VII of CF88. However, it is commonly observed that the deployment of PAs, the natural factor (or ecological) prevails over the others. Thus, the research assumed that the deployment of PAs not adopt systemic constitutional model of sustainability, prevailing natural variable, which violates the fundamental human right to a balanced environment, which presupposes Sustainable Development. Through a holistic, interdisciplinary approach, the research aimed to examine whether the implementation of state protected areas in northeastern Brazil is effectively serving the purpose of ensuring the human right to a balanced environment. The study demonstrated dysregulation between legislation and environmental policy effectively held by public administration, so that the systemic constitutional model of sustainability is not adopted. The inefficiency of policy protection assumed does not follow the law, but the absence of coordinated actions in search of Sustainable Development.
Embora nÃo conceitue meio ambiente, a CF88 (art.

Abstract:
This thesis project focuses on the creation and usage of external light effects to accommodate the needs of competitive gamers. Prior to the creation of these light effects, the function of audio in films and games was analyzed by examining the works of Michel Chion, who is the leading scholar in studying audio-vision: the relationship between the screen and sound. Subsequently, the possible application of these theories onto the lighting domain was discussed, showing the similarities and usefulness of these two different modalities. The goal of the thesis project was to improve the gamers’ perceived and objective performance in first-person shooter games. A counterbalanced within-group study was conducted; each participant played the game Doom 3 for 25 minutes with and without light effects. Four functional and informative light effects were created to accommodate the in-game content in an attempt to improve their performance. The players were given identical instructions on how to play the game. Four Philips Hue Go lights were placed in a rectangular shape around the participant with the TV in front. An additional Philips Hue LED strip was placed behind the TV. After each session, a standardized Game Experience Questionnaire (GEQ) was used to collect data on the players’ perceived performance. In-game logs were collected to determine how the players fared in combat. A linear checkpoint system was created to judge how far the participants progressed. The GEQ data showed that the light effects improved the players perceived performance. However, the results from the in-game logs and player progression are inconclusive and not statistically significant. The identified potential reasons were the low sample size (n=14), too little practice time, potential differences in player skill and physical light positioning.

Ko, Kwangman, Youngjin Kang, and Sun-A. Lee. "Parenting Satisfaction and Paternal Involvement of Korean Fathers: A Person-Centered Approach." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2019. https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu-works/5836.

Full text
Abstract:
Using latent profile analysis, we identified patterns of parenting satisfaction and paternal involvement among 201 South Korean fathers. Three profiles were identified: (1) low involved (n = 74), highly involved (n = 28), and moderately involved (n = 99). A Multivariate Analysis of Variance analysis revealed that fathers in the low involved (n = 74) profile were significantly different from their counterparts in the other profiles regarding longer work hours and higher levels of work-to-family conflict. Also, fathers in the highly involved profile were more likely to report their wives are employed. The findings indicate that paternal involvement types are affected by work-related factors among Korean fathers. Implications for policymakers and research will be discussed. Objectives - To examine the levels of paternal involvement with children and parental satisfaction among Korean fathers.- To explore subgroups of Korean fathers with similar patterns of parental satisfaction and father involvement types.- To identify the differences among the subgroups of Korean fathers regarding demographic characteristics, work hours, wife’s employment, job stress, and work to family conflict.

Jeong, Kiseong. "Aspiration for sanctuary and potential alternatives : new housing environment for young professional single person households in Seoul." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2017. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/7610/.

Full text
Abstract:
The number of single person households in global cities such as London and New York has increased dramatically since the 1990s, with significant impacts for development patterns in these cities. The trend has been particularly prominent in South Korea's capital, Seoul, where whose 854,606 single person households represent 23.9% of total households as of 2010 and even more now in 2015. The increase has been mainly driven by the significant increases in young single households aged in their 20s and 30s. The government has been striving to keep pace with the rapid increases in the single person households by supplying residential dwelling types for them such as 'Urban Lifestyle Housing'. However, initial commentary highlights that the resulting housing environment exhibits numerous shortcomings. In this context, there is a need for research to understand the nature of the city living experience for young single person households, their aspirations and the implications for future design and planning approaches in the city. This research aims to address this gap and to provide a basis for recommending potential alternatives in the development and design of new housing for Seoul's changing population, approaching the issue with three perspectives: 'Human relationships', 'Housing design', and 'Economic issues'.

Abstract:
Throughout this thesis I propose to ascertain cultural values as well as metaphysical beliefs underpinning criança-irân cultural practice and explain the challenges it poses to international legal human rights. This research is focused on criança-irân infanticide cultural practice specifically among the Pepeis (Biombo region, Guinea Bissau, where field research was conducted). The analysis of this practice could not ignore the underlying animist metaphysical system, more precisely the importance of otherworldly forces and the functions they are compelled to perform in the real world. As a general contribution of the research, I expose the challenges that this practice poses to international legal human rights. Firstly, I problematize the apparent inconsistency between human rights and given cultural practices in the framework of the right to culture. Secondly, I shed some light on human rights’ foundations, discerning the individualistic and societal values underneath. Furthermore, I discuss the universalist and relativist stances, along with the crosscultural and ethical pluralism approach. Finally, I argue that the uttermost challenge posed to international legal human rights by criança-irân infanticide cultural practice relies on a different concept of humanness and of rights-holder.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to test if there is a connection between modern day fully automatic rifles rate of fire, used loop length in implementation and experienced realism in a first-person shooter game in first-person, fired by the players own character. With a background consisting of papers, books and lectures/conferences given by experienced people and other experts in the game industry regarding first person shooter games, a listening test was conducted and carried out on a computer using headphones with both trained and untrained subjects since players can be both. A simple firing-range was constructed in Unreal Engine 4 (Epic Games, 2017) where the subjects could switch between two weapons with different rates of fire and three versions of each with different loop lengths, 4, 8 and 16. The sounds were divided into layers, e.g. body, mechanical and bottom, played back using looping as implementation. The subjects were also asked to rate the sounds regarding gameplay and preference to see if the results would differ between the three categories. The results showed a tendency to choose the longer loop for all categories, but only four comparisons gave a significant result when doing t-tests.

The theological discourse gains relevance and authenticity as it expresses the anthropological task: it is in the human reality that God reveals Himself, and his selfcomunication happens in Jesus Christ. In Him, human reality finds sense and salvation. We reflect upon the theological anthropology of Juan Alfaro, re-discovering elements of his systematics wich helps us understand the christian conception of human person. The anthropological presumptions of his theology - the world, interpersonal relations, history and death - help explain the question made by the human person themselves as a question made by God. That interpellation comes from the openness and hope that every man carries within to find the Absolute sense. In Christ the fulfillment of grace is achieved Person of the Verb of God, in his incarnation, the hermeneutic key of the saving mistery: human reality is inserted in the relation of trinitary love which personalises and christifies man and his existence. In the filial relation between Christ and the Father, every one is personalized to a new relation of filial fraternity that manifests the sense of the human person, visible in saving solidarity: personalized in Christ to christify the world and history.

Abstract:
We introduce a framework that would enable using autonomous aerial vehicles in search and rescue scenarios associated with missing person incidents to assist human searchers. We formulate a lost person behavior model and a human searcher model informed by data collected from past search missions. These models are used to generate a probabilistic heatmap of the lost person's position and anticipated searcher trajectories. We use Gaussian processes with a Gibbs' kernel for data fusion to accurately model a limited field-of-view sensor. Our algorithm thereby computes a set of trajectories for a team of aerial vehicles to autonomously navigate, so as to assist and complement human searchers' efforts.

Abstract:
This study develops three models of human rights determinants with the inclusion an untested variable, women in parliaments. The research is conducted on pooled cross-sectional time-series data from 130 countries between 1978 and 1996. For the purpose of analysis the Prais-Winsten Regression method with Panel Corrected Standard Errors was used. The women in power variable is hypothesized to be significantly, positively correlated with a state's propensity toward respect for human rights and is operationalized as percentage of women in parliaments. Three models incorporating as control variables previously identified correlates of human rights abuse were utilized to asses the impact of percentages of women in parliaments on two individual subsets of human rights: personal integrity rights and socio-economic rights. Two models were designed to measure the subset of rights categorized as personal integrity rights using two separate measures: State Department Scores and Amnesty International Scores. Model number three utilized the Physical Quality of Life Index to measure levels of socio-economic rights. Statistical significance was demonstrated by the women in parliament variable in all three models.

This dissertation intends to analyze the attribution of the juridical category of “person” to the unborn child in the context of the juridical-philosophical formulation of meanings attributed to the term person, from the Roman tradition until the context of the crisis of legal security by codification in which the dignity is juridically chosen as a value of the human person. In Roman law, the concept of the person (persona) was not endowed from the abstract, how it was attributed by the Pandectistic of the 19th century, but embraced the human being concretely in his multiple dimensions, inclusively considering itself as such the unborn child, to which was guaranteed the rights in view of his birth. In regard of axiom conceptus pro iam nato habetur, based in the roman treatment given to the unborn, emerged two interpretations: one, more faithful to the Justinian tradition, which recognizes the concrete reality of the unborn child and equates him to the already born, and the other, abstract, sustained by the Pandectistic and based on the thoughts of Savigny, which considers the parity between the unborn and the born simply a mere fiction. This latter interpretation influenced the elaboration of many civil codes like the German and the Brazilian Code of 1916, both of which determined that the natural personhood can be attributed only when the child is born alive. The idea of personhood while a simple legal attribution withdraws itself from the philosophical tradition that considers the person in his ontological aspects, a fact that deserves to be recognized as primary in the juridical planning. The principle of human dignity, incorporated in the Brazilian Constitution of 1988 as the foundation of the Republic, serves as an indication of an ‘ethical personalism’ which reflects itself in personal rights, providing elements to enlarge the semantic content of the juridical concept of person, recognizing the personal dignity of the unborn child, as done in the ‘Pact of San Jose, Costa Rica’ (American Convention on Human Rights), to singularize the juridical personhood as a right and the unborn child as a person. Dailler, Tatiana. "La peau humaine en droit privé." Thesis, Limoges, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015LIMO0123.

Full text
Abstract:
Human skin is a singular element that covers the body and allows everyone to benefit from the sense of touch. Described as a tissue of the human body, now the skin is subject to the same legal system enforced to the human body. However, if the skin is a protecting body shell, it is also akin to the person herself because it compose her appearence, contains elements of her identity and conduce to her identification. Therefore, if the skin covers the entire body, it also constitute the person. This makes of the skin a border element of the body and the person. Connected with this two dominant entities (person and body), the skin must be construed in a ternary relationship wich would place it in the center of the links between the person and her body. Indeed, the skin is not only an element of the human body because the person benefits from a right to make choices concerning it, even to modify it. But the skin cannot either only be an element of the person because it contains the body and constitutes a protection. However, if this link between the skin and the person must be hightlighted, it also has to merge with the link between the skin and the body to assure, on one hand, a coherence between the various legal principles alternately applied to the skin, according to its entity of pertaining, and, on the other hand, to guarantee an effective protection of the skin whatever is this entity of pertaining

The Kalankó community lives in the hinterland of Alagoas, more specifically in the municipality of Água Branca/AL. They have reinforced their indigenous identity publicly since the end of the 1990s, receiving the official classification by the federal government as Indians - in 2003. The field of ethnology classifies this phenomenon as ethnogenesis, among other related terms. These studies focus on the relationship between these populations and the nation state. This thesis aims to understand the Kalankó point of view as to what it means to be a Kalankó person. It is also a study on the symbolic system that is based on native music that acts as the pivot of a complex ritual that connects the mythology with some cultural domains and points out a complex representation of reality. In this sense, this thesis also attempts to understand how this representation is used to establish similarities and differences of strategic importance to the other peoples of the region and Brazil. In addition, I seek to understand what is an indigenous identity from the indigenous perspective. As a consequence, this provides insight into what is human. This thesis is based on a series of eight trips to the region, divided asymmetrically among indigenous groups in the same area, as well as major urban centers of the region, with the main focus on Kalankó villages. In this sense, one of the objectives of this thesis is to carry out studies on the concept of culture and identity, contributing to the field of anthropology. And beyond that, it tries to reposition Kalankó and other indigenous peoples of the northeastern hinterlands among ethnology in Brazil, leaving them symmetrically among other indigenous people, expanding the possibilities of the understanding of human phenomenon
