Elliston, Clark. "Bonhoeffer's ethically oriented self : responsible 'as a human being'." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2012. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:1a2d4b24-05a5-41a1-a5c1-ee5c3c59ca7f.

Abstract:
Dietrich Bonhoeffer offers a vibrant, theological depiction of the self constituted by and for the other in responsibility. The thesis argues that the concept of orientation is crucial for understanding this self; the self is a being oriented to, or away from, the other. To grasp the distinctiveness of Bonhoeffer’s self this thesis aims to open up critical conversation with his historical contemporaries, Emmanuel Levinas and Simone Weil. Like Levinas, Bonhoeffer depicts the self as confronted by the other. Yet unlike Levinas, Bonhoeffer’s other does not render the self a ‘host-hostage’. An oriented self, grounded in Bonhoeffer’s theology, is neither dominating nor other-dominated. Bringing Bonhoeffer and Weil into critical dialogue with one another helps to describe the precise way in which the self is responsible for the other. Conversation with Weil refines Bonhoeffer’s account of responsibility by integrating her account of attention into his account of existing on behalf of another. It is also neither self-affirming nor self-negating. The first chapter outlines two recent conceptions of the self as oriented; but each, as will be demonstrated, does not recognise fully the ethical contours of the oriented self. The second chapter examines in detail Bonhoeffer’s contributions to a Christological account of the responsibly oriented self. Integral to this account are the images of ‘the heart turned in on itself’ (cor curvum in se) and Christ who is fundamentally ‘for’ the other. The third chapter converses with Emmanuel Levinas, both constructively and critically. Of help is Levinas’s reading of the other as a confrontation to the self. His rendering of the other as dominating, or holding hostage, the self is a serious issue. Such a construction resists positive elements of the self-other relation. The fourth chapter investigates what conversation with Simone Weil can offer to Bonhoeffer’s framework. Her concept of attention helps to articulate how the self becomes a self through engagement with another. The fifth chapter presents Adolph Eichmann, as portrayed by Hannah Arendt, as the supreme and pivotal opposite of attentive responsibility. In Eichmann’s irresponsibility and disunity [while doing his ‘duties’] one finds justification for a fundamental re-working of ethics in a Bonhoefferian vein. The image of the ethically blind cor curvum in se exposes Eichmann’s fundamental issue. In contrast, Bonhoeffer’s ethically oriented self both perceives the other and gives of itself as for that other.

Abstract:
In conversations between humans, not only the content of the utterances but also our social signals provide information on the state of communication. Similarly, in the field of human-robot interaction, we want the robots to have the capability of interpreting social signals given by human users. Such social signals can be operationalised in order to detect unexpected behaviours of robots. This thesis work aims to compare machine learning based methods to investigate robots’ recognition of their own unexpected behaviours based on human social signals. We trained support vector machine, random forest and logistic regression classifiers with a guided task human-robot interaction corpus that includes planned robot failures. We created features based on gaze, motion and facial expressions. We defined data points of different window lengths and compared effects of different robot embodiments. The results show that there is a promising potential in this field and also that the accuracy of this classification task depends on different variables that require careful tuning.

Abstract:
Working at sea has traditionally been perceived by society as an arduous but rewarding occupation. Competitive markets, minimal manning and an increase in the prevalence of technology have led to the profession of a seafarer evolving from being focused on skills of a physical nature to those requiring an increased cognitive approach. This has resulted in human performance and wellbeing becoming more significant in securing the health and safety of the individual, and the safety and efficiency of the system. The impact of noise on human performance and wellbeing is an area which has not been appropriately addressed in the maritime domain but has been attributed in literature to hearing loss, fatigue, performance reduction, stress and ultimately accidents. In this thesis, through a review of literature, an assessment of noise exposure levels of crew on board ships, an experimental study measuring performance in relation to noise and the collection and analysis of real human response data from ships; statistical models for predicting human response to noise on board ships have been developed. Then, through utilisation of the human response models a new human oriented noise criteria and design methodology is proposed. In this body of research the main findings include: the strong suggestion that health is at risk due to noise on board ships; evidence that human performance is being affected by background noise levels and; the establishment of a statistically significant relationship which predicts noise in relation to performance. It is envisaged that this research will be utilised by ship designers in estimating the human response to noise at the design stage. Overall, this research has made a significant contribution in addressing the effects of noise on human performance and wellbeing in the maritime domain. In future research it is anticipated that the findings of this research can be combined with the other factors affecting human response on board ships.

Abstract:
The scope of this piece of work is to reflect upon a series of past and recent publications as well as those in progress referring to innovations in architectural education which has already led and/or might lead to major shifts in future practices. This is an opportunity for the author to reflect on concepts and ideas for the future of architecture which is currently undergoing innovative developments by embracing new theories and enduring professional formation according to contemporary trends. This reflective work has been based on publication of research, including ongoing editorial work related to this topic. The author’s ideas and philosophy on human-oriented design and fractal patterns of social life has embraced dynamics of urban developments in modern and future cities. She has succeeded in considering, uniquely interpreting and further developing ideas and theories of established authors, such as Christopher Alexander’s concepts on patterns and principles of design and Nikos Salingaros’ thermodynamic models of the built environment. The author was inspired by teachers and renowned scholars in history, philosophy and practices of architecture; her own teachers’ experiences and their teaching had offered a singular momentum in her personal career path. This long process started when her teachers succeeded in placing urbanism and architecture side by side inside the Faculty of Architecture of Florence back in the 1970s. Hence the author reflects not only on recent publications, but also on others that have been published in the last decade or so. In this report it is evident that materials produced during these years have been essential and invaluable for her later endeavours in learning, teaching and the training of designers and architects in Great Britain and beyond.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examined staff and leadership's attitudes to their work organisation and its environment, and, in particular, the extent to which they preferred a human or task orientation. The study then defined and measured the 'academic culture' of the institution and explored the different effects of emphasising human or task orientations on this academic culture. Finally, the relationship between academic culture and student satisfaction within the institution was explored in the research. The measure of academic culture encompassed 3 domains - planning, the way of doing things, and relationships. A set of survey research instruments was developed and piloted. These instruments measured, in addition to background characteristics of respondents, aspects of attitude to the organisation and perceptions of its academic culture. The results of the study provided evidence that stronger task-oriented attitudes of leaders and staff were associated with academic culture subscales based on 'clarity of the job' and 'goal setting' within the planning domain and 'job performance' within the way of doing things domain. Although the relationship was much weaker, stronger human-oriented attitudes were related to the academic culture subscales of 'communication and relationship' and 'social acceptance' within the relationship domain, and 'leader-subordinate interaction' in the way of doing things domain. In as much as a strong academic culture needs an emphasis on the 3 domains (planning, the way of doing things in an organisation, and relationships), the research suggested that staff and leadership need to be versatile and incorporate both task-oriented and human-oriented approaches. A number of measures of attitudes and perceptions of academic culture were significantly related to the demographic backgrounds of the participants. This emphasised the importance of treating the constructs as multi-dimensional and the leaders, staff, and students as heterogeneous groups. Finally, and importantly, student satisfaction measures were associated with higher academic culture scores

Doebbler, Curtis Francis. "The individual in the process of international human rights law : a value oriented policy." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 1998. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.300543.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis evaluatesth e individual's role in the protection of internationalh uman rights. It argues that by conceptualizing international human rights law as a process that includes individuals as full participants we, as world society, can develop more effective strategies for achieving respect for human dignity. The study examines how current theories and policies of international human rights law attempt to achieve the policy goals of a modem world society, especially the goals related to human dignity. It does this by reviewing practices relevant to the achievement of human dignity. Part I is devoted to defining the problem, method and concepts that form the foundation of this study. In the introduction the problem is defined and in the two subsequent chapters process and participation are described. In the second part four chapters are devoted to examining past trends in specific areas of international human rights law. Both claims and authoritative decisions are described. The four chapters examine past trends in the areas of. (1) theories about the status of the individual under international law; (2) the individual's procedural capacity under international human rights law; (3) the ability of individuals to influence the creation and implementation of international human rights law by the exercise of individual human rights; and (4) individual responsibility for ensuring respect for international human rights law. The thesis of the study comest o sevene ssentialc onclusions. First, becauseh uman rights reflect individuals' values, the individual must be actively involved in their prescription, interpretation, application and evaluation. Second, historically there is adequate evidence to suggestt hat individuals have played a leading role in each of thesep rocessesa t different times during the development of international law. Third, a project to determine the optimal participatory role of the individual must consider at least the four areas of past trends dealt with in this study, to wit, theory, procedural capacity, rights and responsibilities. Fourth, the theory of international law should take into account the individual as a full participant in all processes related to the achievement of human values, especially international human rights law. Fifth, this theory should be reflected by enhancing the procedural capacity of the individual in internationalf orums. Sixth, this should be accompaniedb y the recognition of individual rights to act contrary to the laws and policies that are contrary to the achievement of values of human dignity. And seventh, the duty to respect others' human rights, both by not interfering with others' freedoms and by taking positive steps to ensure others! enjoyment of human rights, is an essentialf eatureo f a society wherein humanr ights are respecteda nd ensured. In essencet,h ese conclusions indicate that international human rights law, both in theory and in practice must reassert the priority of the individual that it has tended to neglect since the arrival of the nationstate on the world stage.

Gamble, Michelle. "Health and disease in Chalcolithic Cyprus : a problem-oriented palaeopathological study of the human remains." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/1303.

Full text
Abstract:
Poor preservation of the human skeletal remains on Cyprus has, in the past, limited palaeopathological analyses conducted. The research presented here has two main aims: (1) to explore the possibility of deriving useful information from the poorly preserved human remains from Chalcolithic Cyprus and the methodological adjustments required to do so, and (2) to discuss the health status of the human Chalcolithic populations in Southwest Cyprus, determining patterns in the expression of pathologies related to age, sex or burial location which, if present, may further elucidate aspects of lifeways within and amongst the living populations. These aims are achieved through a macroscopic and microscopic analysis of the pathological lesions on the human skeletal remains from the Souskiou-Laona cemetery, the Lemba-Lakkous and Kissonerga-Mosphilia settlement sites which all date to the Middle Chalcolithic period. This research presents one of the first comprehensive palaeopathological studies for the Chalcolithic period in Cyprus with multi-site data. Lesions arising from osteoarthritic processes, non-specific diseases and disorders as well as trauma, dental pathologies and congenital defects are recorded, analysed and discussed within the archaeological context. The results presented in this thesis show that information regarding prehistoric peoples can be drawn from poorly preserved remains and it goes further to explore the limitations to the interpretations which can be postulated. The analyses of the research indicate that there are moderate to low prevalence of pathological lesions observed on the Chalcolithic skeletal remains. There is differential expression between males and females in the joints affected by osteoarthritic changes and the types of dental pathologies suffered by each sex. This research contributes to the overall historiography of health and disease in Cyprus, by filling a lacuna for the Chalcolithic period. Additionally, it provides an illustration of some methodological modifications, such as qualitative discussion, needed when dealing with poorly preserved and commingled material in a palaeopathological study.

How should requirements be expressed to support the design process of advanced software? This is what this report contributes based on facts from qualitative research methods performed at Ericsson Software Technology. The design process studied is influenced by different ways of expressing the requirements, problem-oriented and solution-oriented. The problem-oriented way of expressing requirements supports the designers to keep the overall picture of the product and make visions possible in the requirement handling process. The study also points out that the problem-oriented way of expressing requirements facilitates distributed software projects.

Abstract:
Virtual Environment (VE) user interfaces do not generally support personalized interaction or the ability to adapt to the user. Our research is developing nuance-oriented interfaces that take advantage of subtle clues that users give in their actions. To that end, we have performed five experiments with the goal of recognizing and applying nuances for the task of selection. We found evidence that users adapt their behavior to the feedback given by the system, rather than using a preconceived mental model of the environment. In addition, users' behavior can be modeled by a reward function. Lastly, users interact by trading off exploration with exploitation. We propose a method of modeling this behavior using machine learning as future work.

Gao, Li. "The Human Flesh Search Engine in China : a case-oriented approach to understanding online collective action." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2013. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/12770.

Full text
Abstract:
There has been a growing interest in online politics in China. The research mostly focuses on the role of the Internet in two areas, one is its creation of a public sphere and the challenges it poses to the existing communication and political system, and the other one is online censorship undertaken by Chinese authorities to reduce the scope of political discussion online and keep the domestic cyberspace from being merged with foreign cyberspace. However, some political uses of the Internet in China have tended to be overlooked. This thesis seeks to redress this lacuna in research by examining the political focus of a recent Internet phenomenon the Human Flesh Search Engine (HFSE). This term might be more at home in pages of a horror novel but was originally applied by the Chinese media to refer to the practice of online searching for people or human hunting. While existing examinations have focused on breaches of individual privacy by these so called online vigilantes this study mainly focuses on the ability of HFSE to reveal norms transgressions by public officials and lead to their removal. As the politically-focused HFSE is part of the tendency of Chinese popular protest, it is necessary to explore how the HFSE differs from and is similar to those offline protests in China. A case-oriented approach is applied to the research on HFSE. More specifically, the first part of this research puts the understanding of HFSE in Chinese historical context, with the aim of exploring the common dynamics between HFSE and those historical examples of Chinese bottom-up collective action. Then in the second part, a comparison between HFSE and recent Chinese offline popular protests is conducted in order to establish the pattern of politically-focused HFSE. In the third part, based on the empirical cases, the research on HFSE continues with an exploration of HFSE s underlying causal mechanisms to answer a key question of this research: why did HFSE occur? The study implies that there are continuities with respect to the Chinese bottom-up collective action as HFSE and Chinese rural resistances as well as urban labour strikes in the twentieth century of China tend to show similar dynamics, which are determined by the power structure they are exposed to. Moreover, the internal process of politically-focused HFSE differs largely from that of recent Chinese offline popular protests, which indicates that HFSE does not have an offline equivalent, although some of its stages can be witnessed offline. Furthermore, HFSE s occurrence is brought about by a combination of online and offline factors, which are relevant to not only the Internet and Chinese cyberspace, but also the political system that has contributed to the growth of official corruption and low government credibility in China.

Lewis, John A. "An empirical study of software reuse: the impact of the object-oriented paradigm and human factors." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/39909.

Full text
Abstract:
Little or no empirical validation exists for many of software engineering's basic assumptions. While some of these assumptions are intuitive, the need for scientific experimentation remains clear. Several assumptions are made about the factors affecting software reuse. In particular, the object-oriented paradigm and various human factors are hypothesized to affect the successful reuse of software components. This dissertation describes a controlled experiment designed to evaluate the impact of the object-oriented paradigm and human factors on software reuse. The human factors under investigation include managerial influence and cognitive abilities. This experiment concludes (a) the object-oriented paradigm makes significant contributions to productivity, (b) language differences are far more important when programmers reuse than when they do not, and (c) the object-oriented paradigm holds a particular affinity to the reuse process, (d) reuse results in higher productivity than no reuse independent of language paradigm, (e) the level of management encouragement does affect the reuse process, and (f) the cognitive ability of visualization does relate to effective reuse.

Zeng, Hui. "Experience-Oriented Ecological Design: A Methodological Framework to Improve Human Experience in Urban Public Space Ecological Design." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/32908.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis proposes that sensory experience should play an important role in setting up a direct relationship between people and the natural environment, and it is based on the premise that contemporary urban public space ecological designs. Are often deficient in this regard. In order to develop a design methodology that addresses both ecological function and sensory experience, the author examine both contemporary western ecological design and classical Chinese garden design. The former focuses on the ecological functions of the environment, while the latter typically emphasizes the sensory qualities of the landscape. Drawing from the strengths of both approaches, an experience-oriented ecological design framework is proposed with the goal of improving human experience in urban public spaces. The framework emphasizes both sensory experience and ecological functions in two phases of the design process â site analysis and site design. The framework is applied to a design for Bridge Park in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. The design is evaluated to assess efficacy of the framework for the design urban public spaces that address both sensory experience and ecological processes. The evaluation suggests that the framework could be an effective tool for designers, and also draws conclusions regarding the potential role of sensory experience as a tool for creative discovery in the design process. Finally the paper raises questions regarding the desirability of employing sensory experience as a didactic tool to enhance environmental awareness.

Abstract:
This paper is an examination of the horror elements found in Peter Watts’ Blindsight. In depicting an encounter with aliens, this science fiction novel explores topics such as the nature of sentience, mankind’s relationship with technology, posthumanism, and the limitations of the human body and mind. Blindsight also envisions entities (aliens, vampires, and artificial intelligences) capable of interacting with material realities inaccessible to human beings. Using Levi R. Bryant’s machine-oriented ontology, this thesis demonstrates how Watts employs these themes and issues to problematize anthropocentrism and the notion of selfhood. These elements—and more—will be discussed and shown to match the criteria associated with ontological horror.

Abstract:
Space Administration, require that the system utilize a Microsoft Access based implementation. This research focuses on meticulous software engineering to investigate the feasibility of adapting the current "structured" systems to Microsoft-based object oriented architectures ensuring future scalability and increased potential for code-reuse. Primary research questions investigated in this thesis include: 1) How can a Microsoft Access-based implementation provide multi-user access to the same database in a client-server environment while ensuring the ability to scale to a large number (potentially thousands) of users? 2) How can the linguistic discontinuity associated with object-oriented concepts and non-object oriented, flat relational databases be overcome when limited by the requirement for a Microsoft Access based solution? This problem is commonly called "impedence Mismatch". 3) The current military and civilian systems provide similar functionality, but use different database schema. How can object oriented methods be implemented to provide a common interface to both types of data? 4) How should database schema be changed to provide the best performance, scalability, and opportunity for code re-use? 5) In the past, Microsoft has deployed new versions of Microsoft Access and Visual Basic that were not (fully) backwards compatible with previous versions. This caused great discontent among users of applications designed to run under the older versions of these programs. How can our system(s) be designed to isolate them from problems associated with new versions of Microsoft products? Specifically, the pending release of Microsoft Office 2002, the new SQL Server 2000 database engine, and Microsoft Visual Basic.NET. This thesis describes our use of the Spiral Development Model to create a Microsoft Based solution for the Aviation Safety School requirements. We hypothesize that the prototype produced as a part of our research will greatly enhance current HFACS-capabilities and provide the means to weather further changes in requirements and application platforms.

Abstract:
With recognition of turnover as a financial issue increasing, companies are searching for strategies to confront the problem in ways that generate a good return on investment. Successfully managing turnover is a matter of understanding its costs, causes and cures. In service–oriented industries such as banking, people are considered among the most important assets of a firm. Forward–thinking banks are looking for ways to leverage people, along with processes and technology, to achieve their objectives. Employee expectations are changing, too, forcing organisations to place a greater emphasis on talent management strategies and practices. Employees rarely quit on the spot. Generally, an employee becomes dissatisfied and stays disengaged for quite a while before leaving. However, from the moment of disengagement, most employees are no longer as dedicated or productive as they once were. Nearly all the real reasons why employees quit, fall into four basic categories of human needs: the need for trust, the need for hope, the need to feel competent, and the need to feel valued and trustworthy (Branham, 2005). Thirteen possible reasons for resignations were identified within the banking sector, namely: desire to take on a new challenge, bad relationship with management, bad relationship with colleagues, lack of opportunity for advancement, lack of appreciation (perception of recognition), better compensation and benefits elsewhere, long working hours, lack of control over work or working environment, travelling distance to work, personal satiation at home, lack of training and support to reach potential, the department is conducive to black advancement, the bank embraces diversity for all. Most of the employees that resigned voluntary did so because of lack of opportunity for advancement, a desire to take on a new challenge and a lack of appreciation. The statistical analysis revealed that amongst position title, there is a statistical significance for the bank embraces diversity for all as a reason for resignation and that the effect between junior managers and team leaders has a large effect. Analysis by gender differences shows that there is a statistical significance for personal situation at home as a reason for resignation and that females feels stronger about this than males. When looked at the difference between ethnic group, there are two reasons that are statistical significant namely, better compensation elsewhere and long working hours. Africans, coloureds and white‘s size effect is large, meaning that Africans and coloureds feel stronger about leaving for better compensation elseware than whites.

Song, Xingqiang. "A Pressure-oriented Approach to Water Management." Doctoral thesis, KTH, Industriell ekologi, 2012. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-94861.

Full text
Abstract:
Without a comprehensive understanding of anthropogenic pressures on the water environment, it is difficult to develop effective and efficient strategies to support water management in a proactive way. A broader systems perspective and expanded information systems are therefore essential to aid in systematically exploring interlinks between socioeconomic activities and impaired waters at an appropriate scale. This thesis examined the root causes of human-induced water problems, taking the socioeconomic sector into account and using systems thinking and life cycle thinking as the two main methods. The European DPSIR (Drivers-Pressures-State of the Environment-Impacts-Responses) framework was also used as a basis for discussing two kinds of approaches to water management, namely state/impacts-oriented and pressure-oriented. The results indicate that current water management approaches are mainly state/impacts-oriented. The state/impacts-oriented approach is mainly based on observed pollutants in environmental monitoring and/or on biodiversity changes in ecological monitoring. Employing this approach, the main concern is hydrophysical and biogeochemical changes in the water environment and the end result is reactive responses to combat water problems. As a response, a pressure-oriented approach, derived from a DPR (Drivers-Pressures-Responses) model, was developed to aid in alleviating/avoiding human-induced pressures on the water environment. From a principal perspective, this approach could lead to proactive water-centric policy and decision making and the derivation of pressure-oriented information systems. The underlying principle of the DPR approach is that many root causes of human-induced water problems are closely related to anthroposphere metabolism. An industrial ecology (IE) perspective, based on the principle of mass/material balance, was also introduced to trace water flows in the human-oriented water system and to account for emissions/wastes discharged into the natural water system. This IE-based perspective should be used as part of the basis for developing pressure-oriented monitoring and assessing impacts of human-induced pressures on recipient waters. While demonstrating the use of the pressure-oriented approach, two conceptual frameworks were developed, for water quantity and water quality analysis, respectively. These two frameworks could help motivate decision makers to consider water problems in a broader socioeconomic and environment context. Thus they should be the first step in making a broader systems analysis in any given river basin, regarding setting systems boundary and identifying data availability. In this context, a combined hydrological and administrative boundary is suggested to monitor anthropogenic processes and organise socioeconomic activity statistics.

Abstract:
This thesis describes the architecture of an adaptive goal-oriented AI system that can be used for Real-Time Strategy games. The system is at the end tested against a single opponent on three different maps with different sizes to test the ability of the AI opposed to the 'standard' Finite State Machines and the likes in Real-Time Strategy games. The system consists of a task handler agent that manages all the active and halted tasks. A task is either low-level; used for ordering units, or high-level that can form advanced strategies. The General forms plans that are most beneficial at the moment. For creating effective units against the opponent a priority system is used; where the unit priorities are calculated dynamically.

Abstract:
While extensive communication around the sustainability challenges have lead to increased awareness, the expected behavior change correspondent to that level of awareness has not been observed. After decades of information-based sustainability communication the research community recognizes values as important drivers of peoples behavior. Consequently, communication needs to be designed intentionally, so as to implement the change necessary in order to shift society to a sustainable level where the global community lives within the planetary boundaries. This thesis was inspired by this call from the field of sustainability science for a new narrative around sustainability that would inspire more radical change. In the first step we used the European Citizens ́ Initiative for an Unconditional Basic Income (EUBI) as a case study, to analyze what types of values the current narrative of the EUBI speaks to and compare that with the values of the population of the European Union. In the second step our research focused on what types of Guidelines could be developed so as to intentionally design a values-oriented narrative. We identified three ways in which the narrative of EUBI is misaligned with the values of the population of the European Union. We identified as well 13 Guidelines for designing a values-oriented narrative that could contribute in moving society strategically towards sustainability. When utilizing the Guidelines as a tool in crafting a potentially more successful narrative as part of a new sustainability communication, the contribution to SSD may be to strategically overcome the above described misalignment and inspiring more action to bridge the gap.

Abstract:
The development of windows based user interface has introduced a new dimension to the field of human computer interaction. Now a user is able to perform multiple tasks at a time, often switching from one task to another. However windows environment also imposes the burden of manual windows management on the user. Several studies have suggested that manual window management is an unproductive chore often resulting in clutter and confusion on the display screen. Therefore we need a automatic windows layout generator to free the user to perform other useful tasks. This thesis introduces SPORDAC {Shadow Propagation for Overlap Removal and Display Area Compaction) algorithm. This algorithm aims to remove overlap from the display layout and encapsulate the layout in the finite display area. The SPORDAC prototype integrates the SPORDAC algorithm with simulated annealing to optimise the display area usage. The usefulness and applicability of the SPORDAC approach are illustrated with the implementation of a prototype, samples of generated layouts and analysis of the collected data

Li, Shuai. "Fragments of the prosperous age : living with heritage and treasure in contemporary China." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2019. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/282994.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis studies contemporary China's heritage boom phenomenon as experienced through the everyday lives of antiquarian communities (collectors, antique dealers etc.) and heritage professionals in and around Beijing. Aiming to extend our vision beyond heritage sites and museums, which constitute the traditional subject of anthropological studies of heritage, the thesis explores the ways in which 'heritage' and 'treasure' are lived by wider Chinese urban residents, constituting a total social fact. Challenging the popular assumption made by heritage scholars in which heritage phenomenon is considered a by-product of modernity's tendency to contrast the current progress with the past as a benchmark, this thesis argues that contemporary China's heritage fever is, however, a social symptom of utopian replacement, in which the idea of linear progress promised by modernisation has been challenged by a recent nationwide utopian project of returning to 'the prosperous age' ('shengshi') with its emphasis on cyclical 'rise and fall'. Treasures of China, as 'Fragments of the Prosperous Age', have thus emerged as powerful imaginaries and resources to open up a utopian vision of ideal society based on fantastic imaginations of China's past glories. Foregrounding the relations between heritage and utopianism, the thesis subsequently investigates the complex ways in which heritage activists from state systems and antiquarian communities contribute to the utopian project from different pathways, bifurcating China's heritage phenomenon into formal and informal parts. Chapters one and two demonstrate that state-led imaginings have changed from the evolutionary perspective to one pursuing the glory of the past under the new spell of 'civilisational revival'. Officials and activists associated with formal heritage deploy a variety of discursive and bureaucratic technologies to securitise, manage and utilise China's ancient treasures, so as to legitimise the current regime. On the other hand, Chapters three and four show that collectors associated with informal heritage encounter fragments of the past in a bodily and joyful way. In ordinary antiquarian practices which juxtapose the cultivation of moral self with the patination of antique objects, collectors pursue an archaic yet neoliberal custodianship which has altered the ethics and sense of moral responsibility in the domains of market exchange. These two factions in China's heritage world may differ from each other in many aspects, but Chapter five suggests both of them, in fact, conspire to reproduce ancient 'prosperous age' ('shengshi') in the present and for the future. The thesis concludes with a discussion about the extent to which Hegel's future-oriented conception of 'capitalised History' that structures the writing of national history has transformed into a 'capitalised Heritage' in contemporary China. 'Capitalised Heritage' works to recast the importance of the Chinese nation in the contemporary world, reaching an ultimate reconciliation with the spectre and material legacies of the past.

Abstract:

The dawn of a democratic South Africa in 1994 established a society entrenched in Human Rights milieu. As such, public schools are meant to align their policies with the rule of the law. Particularly, section 10 (1) of South African Schools Act, 84 1996 (hereafter SASA) respectfully prohibits the administration of corporal punishment directed at a learner in public schools. The subsequent section 10 (2) of SASA admonishes that any person contravening section 10 (1) of SASA is liable on conviction to a sentence which could be imposed for assault. These mentioned provisions of the school legislation are consistent with section 10 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa (RSA) which affords every person the inherent right to dignity of the person. Against the afore-mentioned legislative provisions, teachers have resorted to the use of sarcasm as a tool to inflict punishment in the manner that it could be equated with corporal punishment. Sarcasm is a form of language that is used to cause emotional and psychological harm, belittle, ridicule and humiliate the person it directed at. Judged against the provisions of the legislation governing schools in South African public schools, sarcasm could be said to be a direct violation of fundamental rights of learners to dignity of the person. In order to explore the intonation of sarcasm as supplement for corporal punishment the research paper employed a qualitative critical emancipatory research (CER) approach. Data gathered through a purposive sample of ten secondary teachers was analysed by the use of textual oriented discourse analyses.

Abstract:

Abstract

This essay examines which role functional oriented music therapy, which is supposed to help sensorimotor development, can have in schools and in health care. To find this out, research about what kinds of effects exercise can have on academic achievements and in recovery from brain injuries has been brought up. The research concerning academic achievements was conducted with school children; some children without difficulties, some with sensory integration problems, and some with motor skill difficulties. In addition to this, research about the brain structure superior colliculus, which lies behind sensory integration, is also brought up.

The results showed that children who were given more exercise had significantly better scores in academic skills than the children with normal academic education. Thus, it might be reasonable to practise functional oriented music therapy in schools, both as helping general development, but also for children with different types of difficulties.

The research concerning exercise and injuries has made clear that the adult brain can change via neurogenesis, plasticity and cortical reorganization. These three aspects are important when practicing a skill or when recovering from an injury. Exercise has been shown to affect these three aspects positively and can therefore also aid the recovery from injuries.

Thus, there seems to be many theoretical aspects supporting the FMT- method. However, the question is if the results of one treatment form can generalize over such a wide range of injuries and defects that the FMT –adepts usually have. It is therefore also discussed if further experiments on the FMT-method could help make it a more effective tool for rehabilitation.

The discussion evaluates the challenges that commercial sex workers face in South Africa and argues that the dignity of sex workers as citizens of South Africa are infringed and it would seem that less is being done to protect these workers due to nature of their work. It is argued that sex workers are still entitled to the rights enshrined in the Constitution despite the illegality of sex work. This discussion argues further that sex work continues to exist in South Africa despite its illegality and it would be prudent to address the challenges that encourage sex work because the criminalization of this type of work does not seem to minimize sex work. The discussion further looks at the case of Kylie v CCMA which has been subject to much debate recently. The discussion also makes a comparative study with Germany and determines the lessons which South Africa can learn from this country regarding decriminalization of sex work.

Abstract:
Rooted in the theories of urban entrepreneurialism, this dissertation employs a political economy framework as a means of analyzing urban governance and economic development in the contemporary US city. This case study of Orlando adds to our understanding of how entrepreneurial narratives are being applied to transportation infrastructure projects in pursuit of local economic development. The empirical case study explores the relationship between planning narratives, urban governance and economic development in the establishment of the SunRail commuter rail system in central Florida. I present the political history of economic development and the role of local boosters in shaping the sociospatial distribution of urban infrastructure and public investment in Central Florida. Utilizing a qualitative research methodology, the case study is based on a series of extended interviews with transportation planners, urban policymakers and community leaders in the Orlando area. The empirical data was complemented with official documents and archival records concerning the planning of transit-oriented developments along the SunRail system. This research presents the current efforts of Central Florida boosters to apply governance approaches to reshape the urban form and to direct the ensuing flows of capital investment through the restructuring of the region’s transportation infrastructure and employing planning narratives that draw heavily on creating amenity growth strategies. Local boosters expect that by providing dense development corridors through the region, including transit-oriented development centers, the city will have met the pre-conditions for attracting private capital investment. Specifically, local leaders are seeking to attract investment by the type of firms that will provide high-wage jobs to the region to balance the glut of low-wage service sectors jobs found in the region’s theme park industry. In the case of Central Florida, early private investment in SunRail adjacent property has come from local firms that tend to have a high level of local fixity and existing investments in the Orlando market.

Abstract:
This thesis proposes a concept for exploring cities with an inclusive map. Most of current studies and projects only include one kind of user groups if creating systems for navigation and exploring new areas. Often, if creating a system for a very exclusive user group, e. g. visually impaired, other user groups are not considered. Though in order to create an accessible system, studies should include the user in the range of the most inclusive and most exclusive user groups. This is why we tried to create the concept of a design for an accessible city map under the approach of inclusive design. Since around 15 per cent of the world population suffer from some kind of disability, we decided to start with the most exclusive users of a city map – visually impaired. Therefore, theoretical and practical human-centred design methods are used to create a prototype hand in hand with the future user groups. The details used in the design process incorporates data from 10 survey answers from visually impaired people as well as data from 10 interviews with sighted people and a workshop with six people from different professions out of sociology, tourism marketing, HCI and language sciences. Additionally, at the end of the process, an evaluation with three visually impaired and two sighted people was used to prove the concept of the created prototype. The prototype was created with different digital fabrication and IoT tools and technologies. It should help to make public spaces more accessible and explorable. We hope to deliver a base idea of an accessible city map, which shows how to include inclusive design in the regular design process, in order to design without exceptions. The evaluation showed that our idea worked and that even though the users' groups are very different, they have a lot in common.

Tutor: David Freund Keywords: Project structure, employee engagement, manager relationship, job demands, job resources, group dynamics. Research question: How can a project structure have an impact on project team members’ engagement within a project-oriented organisation?           Purpose: This thesis aims to investigate within a project-oriented organization how the project management structure can influence the project teams’ engagement. Its further purpose is to add new knowledge in the subject of project-based engagement and human issues of project management. To study this area, possibilities will open for a greater understanding of workplace engagement, in the specific context of project-oriented organisations implementing the project structure. Method: This thesis adopts a quantitative research method with a deductive theory approach, whereby theory is elaborated which devices hypotheses for the research. Furthermore, the collection of primary data for this thesis is retrieved through a self-completion questionnaire in the form of an online survey provided by Google Forms. Data will be retrieved and analysed through the statistical software IBM SPSS Conclusion: The most significant finding is the positive relationship between manager relationship and engagement, strongly agreeing with previous literature of Khan (1990) and Matthews et al. (2018). The other two variables found to have a significant relationship to engagement were job-resource availability and work/ task context. This agreed with Bakker et al. (2007), Demerouti et al. (2001), Khan (1990) and Matthews et al. (2018) amongst others. Unexpectedly and as not hypothesised for is that group dynamics has no significant relationship towards engagement. This goes against some of the main literature by Kahn (1990) and Matthews et al. (2018). However, the result has shown all variables are influenced by the project structure and engagement indicated to increase in its whole

Abstract:
Treatment of elderly people and citizens in need of professional care is one of the most important aspects of any society to consider that aims at support for quality of life. Support for such qualitative aspects of a modern society often manifests itself by means of value-chains. However, all activities that a business or organization uses are not included in the value-chain, it is only the activities and information that generate any kind of value for the users in a particular organization that are included in the value-chains. To that end, the locality of health care related information primarily exists at the hospital and, therefore, the care of patients is most efficiently carried out at the hospital. However, if the involved information can be accessed anywhere throughout the value-chain, a possible situation would be to keep the patients in their homes without disrupting already established work practice and related value-chains. In principle, introducing new technology must not disrupt a value-chain; it must preserve or, even better, improve it. Health care is becoming more mobile and needs support for such behavior. The quantitative value to the user is quantified by means of value-chains, so it is important that they remain non-disrupted. Consequently, the fundamental concepts dealt with in this thesis are; value-chains, health care and mobile technology. The problem domain is distributed health care and we have chosen to focus on sustainability of the involved value-chains. In essence, we want to add new technology to the domain without disrupting already existing value-chains. This in order to make the distributed health care apparatus more efficient and cost effective. The main problem we have identified is regarding how medical doctors and nurses could access the same information in patients' homes as they can at the hospital.

Unimodal inputs and outputs in current systems have become very mature with touch applications or distributed services for geo-localization or speech, audio and image recognition. However, the integration and instantiation of all these modalities, lack of an intelligent management of the acquisition and restitution context, based on highly formalized notions reflecting common sense. This requires a more dynamic behavior of the system with a more appropriate approach to manage the user environment. However, the technology required to achieve such a goal is not yet available in a standardized manner, both in terms of the functional description of unimodal services and in terms of their semantic description. This is also the case for multimodal architectures, where the semantic management is produced by each project without a common agreement in the field to ensure inter-operability, and it is often limited to the processing of inputs and outputs or fusion / fission mechanisms. To fill this gap, we propose a semantic service-oriented generic architecture for multimodal systems. This proposal aims to improve the description and the discovery of modality components for assistance services: this is the architecture SOA2m. This architecture is fully focused on multimodality and it is enriched with semantic technologies because we believe that this approach will enhance the autonomous behavior of multimodal applications, provide a robust perception of the user-system exchanges, and help in the control of the semantic integration of the human-computer interaction. As a result, the challenge of discovery is addressed using the tools provided by the field of the semantic web services

Abstract:
This study explores the concepts of vulnerability, agency, and actors with relation to the capability development and deprivation of women with physical disabilities in Lusaka, Zambia. Based in the human development paradigm and Sen and Nussbaum’s Capabilities Approach, it seeks to critically explore what impact being born, raised, and living as a woman with a physical disability in a developing country has on the development of capabilities. It also seeks to identify and analyze the involved processes, actors, and environmental factors. A main finding is that capability deprivation for women with physical disabilities is not simply caused by disability, or by gender, but by a multitude of factors. These include: the environment, social contexts, and relative poverty in which the women live; the particular cultural repertoires that surround them; and the actors with whom they interact. However, disability can, and often does, exacerbate the complex life situations in which the women find themselves.
