Norman, David J. "Human traders need new tools." Thesis, University of Essex, 2016. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/17866/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis proposes new methods and tools for helping human traders to compete in a high-frequency trading environment. Human traders have difficulty trading against predatory algorithms and the thesis proposes methods that support the creation of assistive tools that can help human traders to compete profitably. It also develops further understanding of classical decision-making theory in a realtime trading context demonstrating that human traders improve decision-making biases when linked together in groups or with an assistive machine. As described in the thesis human traders are monitored, and their data is captured, in realtime and in situ. The trading performance and behavioural characteristics of the traders are studied in this context in order to determine if they can be positively modified. The thesis presents a new model for studying human trading behaviour in realtime and in situ using unique software. It also describes the basis for the development of a range of interventionist and assistive tools that are designed to augment trading performance. The approach put forward is unique in its application. It also provides evidence that human traders are willing to allow machines to augment their trading decisions. The contributions of this thesis are that it overcomes the problem of assessing human trader risk-taking behaviour in realtime and in situ, it makes sense of human trading behaviour at realtime speeds and then it shows that, with new approaches to human-machine collaboration, trading performance improves and classic decision-making biases are reduced.

Abstract:
Technology is continually changing, and organizations are adapting to these changes. As a result of new technology and automation, the Human Resource Department is experience as transition phase in its structure and function. This paper first explores the current functions of the department. It then develops into the current challenges that the HR department faces moving forward. After taking a look at current product offerings available to automate the department, I discuss the possibility of fully automating the department. Implications to automating the department and using these services are also discussed. Can the department fully automate? If the department is using new services, what happens to the employees of the company, and the HR department as a whole? How do these changes not only impact the department, but how the organization operates? These are some questions addressed.

Dineen, Christina. "Interrogating need : on the role of need in matters of justice." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/33124.

Full text
Abstract:
Need is a concept that carries intuitive appeal in moral decision-making. As it stands, need is relatively under-theorised, given its currency not just in philosophical argumentation but in news coverage, charitable appeals, and political practice. Need claims carry compelling normative force, and they are amenable to widespread support as our most basic needs are some of the things we most transparently share with our fellow human beings. However, how should we understand that normative force? Is need best understood to compel us as a matter of justice? I begin my account by considering the kind of need relevant to the project. I build from an understanding of need as a three-place relation, which is by its nature needing for a purpose. I suggest that morally important needs are those which aim at the objective interests that all people have in virtue of what is good for each of us qua human beings ('non-arbitrary needs'). Further, I distinguish the existentially urgent subset of those non-arbitrary needs as 'basic needs.' Given this understanding, I consider how basic needs theory relates to its conceptual neighbours. I focus on capabilities as the nearest neighbours, but also comment on wants, interests, and rights. I judge that the theories developed by Martha Nussbaum (capabilities) and Len Doyal and Ian Gough (needs) benefit from a complementary reading, with each supplementing the other. I then draw from Amartya Sen's early writings on capabilities to ultimately see capabilities and needs as two sides of the same coin. This helps to situate needs theory in relation to a mainstream branch of political theory more generally, and indicates that we can recognise the special significance of needs without eschewing other morally important categories. I then move to establish a scope of justice that allows us to distinguish between duties of justice and other moral duties. If we think that duties of beneficence are weak and optional, whereas duties of justice are binding and enforceable, a great deal rides on how we characterise our duties to the global poor. I offer a 'moral enforceability' account, claiming that duties of justice are those which are, in principle, morally enforceable. It is the in-principle enforceability of justice duties which gives them teeth. Returning to need, I then ask how another's need comes to give me a moral reason for action. I canvas a range of existing accounts, many of which furnish important insights. I then propose that it is the morally relevant capacities of the being in need which gives them moral status such that their needing is morally significant. We are morally required to answer this need with responsiveness, as a demonstration of appropriate respect for the sort of being that the human in need is. If this is right, we are morally required to be responsive to need, even if we are not always required to reduce it. Finally, I bring the diverse strands of the foregoing argument together to return to the relationship between need and justice. I consider what a duty of responsiveness might amount to in practice, and suggest that our duties of responsiveness are best thought of as collective duties, grounded in the capacity of the global well-off to contribute. Further, I argue that duties of responsiveness are a matter of justice, as they are the sort of duties that are, in principle, morally enforceable. A wide range of threats to the necessary conditions for human flourishing, and even human life, are on the horizon, and many of these are uniquely collective challenges. The seriousness of those challenges, and the extent to which we have treated our responsibilities to those in need as discretionary in the past, means collective action and problem solving are called for when there are no easy answers.

Rowley, Jeanette Karen. "Towards a vegan jurisprudence : the need for a reorientation of human rights." Thesis, Lancaster University, 2017. http://eprints.lancs.ac.uk/88239/.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is to develop a new way of thinking about the theory and practice of human rights to accommodate the demands of vegans for basic moral rights for nonhuman animals. The work firstly outlines the ways in which the claims of vegans, under the right to freedom of thought and conscience, are largely unsupported by existing human rights because they are typically outweighed by the wider interests of the majority. Drawing on the work of Emmanuel Levinas, the thesis considers arguments that ground the nature of vegan claims in the ethics of alterity. It specifically utilises the argument that the basis of human rights recognises ethical responsibility to the precarious, mortal other. Upendra Baxi cautiously supports the application of Levinas’ philosophy to the ethics of law, and there is a slowly growing body of literature in this regard. This thesis is the first human rights work to show that Levinas’ ethics of alterity can also be applied to nonhuman others, and that human rights arguments can include claims that the avoidable suffering of nonhuman animals is a human rights wrong. The argument developed within this thesis allows a reconceptualisation of the human rights demands of vegans as claims representing a well-established ethical regard for nonhumans. Looking to Levinas’ ethics of alterity not only illustrates a new approach to human rights litigation to accommodate vegans but also grounds the protection of other animals and allows for a reconceptualisation of the very idea of human rights.

Sikwibele, Kabukabu. "The right to adequate housing : the need for its justiciability in the Zambian constitution." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/4735.

Abstract:

Zambia's housing problems cannot be overstated. The current Constitution of Zambia does not recognise the right to adequate housing as a fundamental human right. It provides that the State shall endeavour to provide decent shelter for all but as a directive principle of state policy. In essence, as explicitly stated by the Constitution, the right to housing is not justiciable. This means that Zambians cannot approach any court, tribunal, administrative institution or entity to claim violation of the right to adequate housing. It is submitted that rights must be claimed if they are to be fully enjoyed. This thesis will discuss the importance and the need for a justiciable right to adequate housing in Zambia enshrined in the Constitution.

Abstract:
This thesis takes in to account mainly the cooperative design and human factors from ubiquitous computing design perspective. Areas such as role of cooperative design in ubiquitous computing perspective, the changing attributes of society and the associated issues, the changing shape of public service delivery and need for a change in methodology in ubiquitous computing projects have been discussed. The overall approach is taking advantage of Suchman’s idea of ‘design as an artful integration of different social as well as technical aspects'. The advantage of the technique has been taken by bringing together social and societal aspects, agenda of governments from IT perspective, human factors and purely designs methodology to frame up in which we need to re-assess ubiquitous computing design methodology. The thesis work comprises literature review, and a case study to pick up on the role of cooperative and participatory design. The probe was specifically in the context of ubiquitous computing design requirements and ubiquitous computing vision

Miller, Kimberly A. "Human motivation and psychological well-being in a sample of clinical and non-clinical adults." Virtual Press, 2005. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1327294.

Full text
Abstract:
Many researchers and theorists and argued that a person's psychological health and well-being require that needs are met. If needs are not met, the result is distress and attempts to compensate, both of which may lead to psychological problems. Thus, psychologists and others whose goal is to help people with psychological problems require a theory of important psychological needs. This study provides a critical review of major need theories and assessment instruments developed to operationalize those theories. Based upon this review, five needs (autonomy, competence, relatedness, purpose, and physical) were identified as being critical aspects of psychological well-being. Using a relatively new needs assessment scale, these five needs were assessed in 1,358 clinical and non-clinical adults from various sites around a Midwestern state. Results indicated a five-factor structure that was slightly different than the one originally hypothesized. This new five factor model (life direction, positive interpersonal relations, interpersonal support, competence, and ability to adapt) was found to be consistent across both the clinical and non-clinical samples. Results provided strong evidence that the measurement instrument has superior psychometric properties to previously developed instruments. Importantly, this new need assessment inventory could discriminate clinical from non-clinical samples. An additional important finding concerned self-esteem. Many researchers have argued about whether self-esteem is a need. Results here suggest that self-esteem is not a need, but is either irrelevant or may be a vague measure of several needs. Suggestions for future research and implications for clinical treatment are discussed.

Abstract:
Magister Legum - LLM
South Africa‟s definition of a firearm is quite broad, yet it excludes various devices that have the same lethal effects as a firearm. This is informed by the various principles that have been developed by the courts in interpreting the said definition. It is argued that a good definition informs the extent to which other aspects like licensing and usage may be instructive. The central research question as regards the context of the definition of a firearm, leads to an examination of three interrelated questions. These include the definition of a firearm in South Africa, the relevance of experiences from other jurisdictions and the need for a new definition of a firearm.

Mulenga, Chipasha. "Foreign direct investment in Zambian mining sector : the need for environmental protection and human rights." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/64626.

Full text
Abstract:
Promotion of foreign direct investment in Zambia’s mining sector has been a key priority of the government ever since large scale mining commenced in the country. The sector, which confers on the country numerous benefits either from the economic or social front, has continued to grow with a number of mines being opened in most parts of the country. However, mining, by nature, leads to degradation of the environment and consequently affects the right of persons to enjoy a clean, safe and healthy environment. In light of this, it became imperative that a study is undertaken to investigate the extent to which the environment and human rights are protected from the effects of mining activities in Zambia. The purpose of undertaking this study is to suggest an approach that could be adopted in order to ensure protection of the environment from the negative effects of mining activities. In achieving this goal, a comparative approach was embraced and a qualitative method of data collection employed. The study has revealed that foreign direct investment, environmental protection, and human rights are interrelated with one common objective– enhancing the livelihood of human beings. This is evident from the policies developed and legislation enacted to protect human rights and also control mining activities in Zambia. The study has also revealed that at the international level, standards have been developed to ensure minimisation of the effects of mining activities on the environment. However, these standards are not legally binding. A key finding of the study is that although there a number of domestic policies (such as the Mineral Resources Development Policy and National Policy on Environment) and legislation (Environmental Management Act and the Mines and Mineral Development Act) that prescribe the expected standards to be upheld by mining companies, these do not contain adequate mechanisms to curtail environmentally degrading mining activities. Furthermore, institutions such as the Human Rights Commission, Mines Safety Department and Zambia Environmental Management Agency that have the responsibility of ensuring that mining companies comply with the applicable legislation have not been effective in this regard largely as a result of the numerous challenges that they face, including insufficient funding, inadequate capacity and political interference. This has led some spirited non-governmental organisations to bring court actions against erring mining companies. The analysis of the decisions rendered by the courts shows that the courts have, in these cases, taken a dim view of claims brought before them by complainants against the actions of respondent mining companies. The thesis concludes that while there has been an increase in investment in the mining sector, there are no corresponding legislative or policy measures to curtail mining activities that have negative impacts on the environment. The absence of such measures has left mining companies at liberty to act with impunity at the expense of a sound environment and consequentially, protection of the human rights of persons that live in the vicinity of the mines. It is therefore argued that the framework for foreign investment has neither facilitated protection of the environment nor guaranteed respect for human rights. In order to address this problem, a suggestion is made to the effect that Zambia's legislation needs to adopt some of the best practices that exist in the mining and environmental legislation enacted by some SADC Member States. Doing so would ensure mutual reinforcement of the framework on foreign direct investment and mining on the one hand, and environmental protection and human rights on the other.

"What Human Services and Helping Professionals Need to Know about Employee Retention and Work-Life Balance." Abstract:
The Work-Family Enrichment theory highlights the interrelatedness of professional and personal life and notes that positive work and family experiences can have additive effects on individuals and their families (Greenhaus & Powell, 2006). Through this lens, work satisfaction has implications for family and individual wellbeing. When workplace organizations implement practices that encourage employee retention, they systematically create an environment that fosters employee satisfaction (Griffin et al., 2010; Wells, 2015). Retention, and the relationships between work, family, and individual wellbeing, are particularly salient for certain types of work that are connected to human development and family science because many of these careers are high-demand/lower-pay “labors of love” (e.g., child care providers, social work, child-life specialists). Equipping current and future helping/human service professionals with an understanding of effective retention practices will help them identify satisfying work opportunities for themselves and enhance their ability to advocate for and implement retention practices across the field.

Abstract:
The research in this paper examined the legitimacy of land-use planning when there are polarizing views of how a specific project should develop. The focused was on the case study of Skutberget in the municipality of Karlstad, Sweden, were two separate planning processes are ongoing. The current development plans regards a Moomin inspired theme park where the company Moomin OY is the developer, as well as an improvement and development of the existing recreational park were the municipality is the responsible part. In a Swedish context, municipalities have a strong authority when it comes to land-use planning, a right often labelled as a “planning monopoly”. This research fills a gap in the scientific academic literature when it comes to assessing democratic processes on a local level, with a special regard to spatial planning. Legitimacy in a representative democracy is a multifaceted concept, which requires both aspects of political representation and social acceptance for a decision to be deemed legitimate. With the case study, political representation regarding both a desire and aversion of developing Skutberget exist. This difference in opinion regarding the development of Skutberget is reflected in public attitude as well, were the theme park of Moomin OY is the biggest dispute. People reflecting different perceptions have taken it upon themselves to engage with media outlets to vocalise their opinions and news articles of the development of Skutberget is a recurring feature in local newspapers. Full social acceptance and consent are, therefore, lacking for the process of developing Skutberget. But as the opinions differ in Karlstad, it is a matter of interpretation of what consist of social acceptance and how to value it in the planning and decision-making process.

Abstract:
This item is an invited response to Bader and Nyce (1998) Theory and Practice in the Development Community: Is there room for cultural analysis? It is not the definitive copy. Please use the following citation when referencing this material: Dillon, A. (1998) Cultural Analysis And What Designers Need To Know - A Case of Sometimes Too Much, Sometimes Too Little, and Always Too Late. ACM Journal of Computer Documentation, 22,1, 13-17. Bader and Nyce's article raises intriguing issues that have concerned researchers in HCI and user-centered systems design for much of the last decade: to what extent can a deep social science methodology influence the process of technology design usefully. Their conclusion, that cultural analysis yields knowledge perceived to be of little value by system designers, is in my view, largely correct. However, while I share their conclusion, I do not accept their rationale. In the present paper I will attempt to demonstrate that the root of the problem lies less with the system designers than the inappropriate application of the specific social science methods Bader and Nyce invoke, which itself can be traced to their overly narrow view of the design process and their assumption that cultural analysis is the most useful social scientific method. It appears to me that Bader and Nyce's analysis rests firmly on one key point: developers make epistemological errors. These errors thus systematically bias designers' output and hence color their designs. The authors describe two such error types. The first is that classic problem of designers assuming that users are somewhat like them, and hence the designers' judgments of what constitutes good design will logically be shared by the intended users. The second type of error reflects the designers' views of social life being describable in terms of rules, albeit complex rules, which enable interaction to be predicted. This key point of epistemology needs to be examined critically since much of what follows in the Bader and Nyce article, and my response, flows from it.

Abstract:
This minor dissertation argues that there is more than a disjuncture between theory and practices, particularly for refugees and migrants and doctors in South Africa. The core idea of the Bill of Rights is that socio-economic rights are for everyone. Yet, its application suggests everyone means all citizens in the post-apartheid period, rather than all residents in South Africa. In the international domain, the human rights discourse calls on states to recognise responsibility extending to all peoples residing in a sovereign nation- state; but progressive realisation can hamper this aspiration. By employing progressive realisation within South African law, the idea that the state pays for what it can and makes future efforts to change, socio-economic rights for everyone currently cannot be achieved. This dissertation examines how Constitutional Court rulings on access to healthcare and relevant statutes have not been uniformly granted to everyone causing a disjuncture between law and practice.

Englberger, Florian. "Dealing with nationalism in view of a human need to belong : the feasibility of narrative transformation in Northern Ireland." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/16401.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to delineate what change in divided societies such as Northern Ireland is possible. Two steps are necessary to answer this question: first, to explain the potency of nationalism. I contend that taking the evolutionary history of humans and a human need to belong into account is essential for an understanding of A.D. Smith's ethno-symbolist approach to nationalism. We need to acknowledge that human beings emerged from small-scale settings and are therefore conservative beings who seek those patterns of familiarity that make up the ordinary ‘everyday'. They are also prejudiced beings, as prejudice helps to break down a complex world into digestible pieces. The ethnic state excluding an ethnic ‘other' is an answer to these calls for simplicity. By establishing an apparent terra firma, a habitus, symbols of an ethnic past and national present speak of nationalist narratives that provide a sense of ontological security. In (Northern) Ireland, ethno-national communities based on prejudiced understandings of history have long been established. In this second step I maintain that change that violates the core potent national narratives cannot be achieved. The Provisional IRA's change from insurrection to parliament became feasible because a radical break with republican dogmas was avoided. Sinn Féin, despite a rhetorical move towards ‘reconciliation', still seek to outmanoeuvre the unionist ‘other'. The history of Irish socialism, on the other hand, has been a failure, as it embodied a radical attempt to banish the ‘other' from the national narrative. Regarding ‘post-conflict' Northern Ireland, I argue for a peacebuilding approach that leaves the confinements of hostile identity politics, as these mass guarantors of ontological security possess only limited potential for relationship transformation. We need to appreciate those almost invisible acts of empathy and peace that could be found even in Northern Ireland's darkest hours.

Single Player Roleplaying Game (SPRPG) is a popular genre among players as well as developers, with recent blockbuster titles such as Skyrim by Bethesda and Mass E↵ect 3 by Bioware. In recent years, an occurrence that have been gaining a lot of attention is the development of more advanced and vivid Artificial Intelligence (AI) within these SPRPG and a lot of progress has been made towards making the Non-player Character (NPC) more vivacious and life-like. It is, however, still a common occurrence that NPCs wait around for the player to interact with them; never having a plan or agenda of their own. Their purpose seem to be to wait for the player and provide him or her with information, bartering or a quest. This could result in a game environment that feels static and lifeless to some players and, thus, possibly become detrimental to the game experience. The main objective of this thesis was to implement a need-based system, resembling, to some degree, the one used in The Sims by Maxis, where NPCs get hungry, thirsty, sleepy and similar, and to test whether this system will enhance the game experience. If the NPCs of a SPRPG have needs of their own and therefore can not just wait around for the player to come to them, it may make the game experience more life-like and dynamic. A need-based system that allows the designer to define a set of needs for each NPC, was implemented using the Aurora Toolset for Neverwinter Nights by Bioware. The system was then tested by allowing a number of people play a custom module for Neverwinter Nights twice: once with the system in place and once without, then answering questionnaires regarding their experience. The results show, unanimously, that this prototype did enhance the game experience. Though this was a small module and only a prototype, it does indicates that the use of a need-based system might indeed enhance the dynamic and vivacity of a SPRPG.

Abstract:

The success of any human rights system at the domestic, regional or international level requires an adequate development of the normative, institutional and jurisprudential frameworks. With regard to the African Commission, its approach on the normative and jurisprudential framework on evidence obtained through human rights violations is critiqued. The study is guided by three research questions on the African Commission’s normative and jurisprudential framework, and interrogates the need for improvement. While other human rights bodies like the European Court of Human Rights and the Human Rights Committee have developed jurisprudence, their experiences can only be useful to Africa where they are subjected to a framework that speaks to an accused, in Africa in light of his or her peculiar situation. An evaluation of the African Commission’s mode of dealing with evidence obtained through human rights violations, followed by an evaluation of the mode engaged by other human rights bodies offers a platform to selectively, and with necessary adoption recommend a framework that the Africa Commission can use to improve its jurisprudence. In this regard, the study draws on the experiences of other human rights bodies to aid, the development of a framework to improve the jurisprudence of the African Commission. The study situates theoretical underpinnings that inform the decisions of the African Commission, the European Court of Human Rights and the Human Rights Committee. This is followed by an evaluation of the normative and jurisprudential frameworks of the three human rights bodies. The study proposes a framework based on a victim-centred approach to improve the jurisprudence of the African Commission on evidence obtained through human rights violations.

Abstract:
The situation of children in the Philippines is not in accordance with the rights stipulated under the CRC. The extreme poverty and widespread corruption in the country creates an abusive and neglectful environment for people, with children being the most severely affected. The Philippine state does not appear to respect, protect and fulfil its obligations under international law. Other agents, such as NGOs therefore assume responsibility to fulfil the needs of children. Many children are maltreated and in need of rehabilitation. This thesis is based on a field study focusing on the work performed by two NGOs in the Philippines that help children renew their lost childhood. The aim is to draw attention to the needs the child has in their development and wellbeing, especially the need for play and creativity. Two needs that tend to get overlooked in the assessment of the best interest of the child.

Abstract:
Terrorism, in one way or another, touches everyone's lives. Its affect could be as small as watching media stories on the nightly news and waiting longer in a security line at the airport or as significant as losing a loved one in an attack. As individuals come to grips with living with increased terrorist violence, individual nation-states and the international community have to prepare themselves to prevent, react to, and counter terrorism. This thesis examines whether international law provides an adequate framework for states victimized by terrorism to respond within the law. It highlights how international law currently addresses terrorism and the benefits and disadvantages of applying national and transnational criminal law and international human rights law compared with international humanitarian law to terrorism. Three case studies, the 11 September 2001 attacks on the United States, the 5 September 1972 attack against Israeli athletes in Munich, Germany, and the 11 March 2004 bombings of the train system in Madrid, Spain, investigate how international law has been used in actual terrorist incidents, lending insight into how international law has been interpreted and used in the face of terrorism. They also allow analysis of other factors besides international law that impact a victim-state's response. Finally, this thesis proposes criteria that can be weighed by victim-states and the international community in order to develop an appropriate response to terrorist incidents and recommendations for modifications to international law that will maintain international law's relevance as the international community fights terrorism.

Abstract:
The health care sector is one of the most information-intensive institutions in Sweden. Big investments in information technology have been made to ensure efficiency and quality within organisations in health care. This has led to high requirements in documentation and resulted in an increase in administration which gradually more often is done by nurses and doctors. A major problem is that it is difficult to gain access to the information recorded in all the different systems, which is their objective. This causes double documentation instead of being a support in follow-up performance.   This study investigates the use of a central warehouse to enhance how people work with statistics at a clinic. The purpose of the project was to identify need and issues surrounding the clinical internal statistic of the Department of Neurosurgery and then give an improvement proposal in the form of a prototype software tool. During the project a requirement analysis in the form of interviews and observations in the clinic was carried out and the project team could identify users, systems, artefacts and information needs were identified. The result of this work is a prototype which was developed in a user-centered process, where contact with the IT-department (e-Hälsa) provided opportunities for access to data. The project has contributed a survey of the clinic where information- and functional needs about administrative statistics have been compiled and are the basis for a prototype that demonstrates a possible concept for recording and monitoring.

Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2017. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk:80/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=233655.

Abstract:
The growing awareness of the inadequacy of international law as a means of addressing current environmental problems has led to calls for a new approach. In view of the links between the protection of the environment and the protection of human rights, according to the Stockholm Declaration of the United Nations Conference 1972, one such approach has been to focus on the development of international human rights law concepts and mechanisms to address environmental concerns. This thesis assesses the possible approaches and the limitations of the protection of the human rights to a healthy environment under the International Bill of Rights. The current international human rights law does not expressly provide for the human rights to a healthy environment. The thesis considers how the environment may be protected both through the application of presently accepted human rights and through the establishment of new human rights to a healthy environment. This thesis goes on to discuss the relationship between the international human rights law and the international environmental law, thereby giving an example of regime interaction. This is of strategic importance to understanding the meeting point of the two areas of law in this thesis. The need for sustainable development and the challenge of climate change have come to the fore and they both give urgency to the need for a human rights approach for the protection of the environment. There are concerns about whether there is a need for the provision of the human rights to a healthy environment in the international human rights law as existing rights are considered robust in themselves to protect the environment. This thesis will investigate the claim whether there are currently binding human rights to a healthy environment under the international law while building a solid argument on the need for a Convention on the human rights to a healthy environment. The thesis addresses the doctrinal and conceptual issues challenging the institutionalisation of the human rights to a healthy environment in the international human rights law. The thesis makes a case on the need for a Convention on the Human Rights to a Healthy Environment. It bolsters the point that the human rights to a healthy environment are long due; however what is lacking, is the doctrinal precision on the best way to institutionalise these rights. The research will attempt to proffer a proposal on the way forward by providing the institutional framework of the rights in a Convention. Before that, there is the need to discuss and settle several other possibilities and their limitations for the protection of the said human rights to a healthy environment. The proposed Convention could serve as a channel to offer a more coordinated, detailed, and well-documented approach for dealing with the linkages between human rights and the environment, as opposed to the fragmented approaches adopted across national and regional levels.

Abstract:
"The question of locus standi regarding the non-state complaints procedure before the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (the Commission) is a very flexibile one. Although the language of the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights (the Charter), the enabling powers and functions of the Commission, does not provide for such broad standing, the Commission has over its 20 years of operation, given broad interpretation to the question of standing by adopting the actio popularis doctrine. As a reslut the Commission has entertained communicatons from any person, group of persons or non-governmental organisation (NGOs), whether on their own behalf or on behalf of tothers. The location or nationality of such persons is also not a bar to standing. Consequently, the Commission has accepted communications from national NGOs operating in the country of the state party against whom the complaint is made, NGOs with a regaional focus, international NGOs, and non-African nationals. ... The study has five chapters. Chapter one introduces the study and the justification thereof. Chapter two explores the origin, nature and application of locus standi in domestic legal systems with particluar respect to private protection of public rights and human rights protection using Ghana, Mozambique and South Africa as case studies. Chapter three examines the standing requirements before other regional human rights protection systems namely the ECHR, and the IACHR as well as global human rights protection mechanisms throught the lens of the HRC, the CERD-Committee, the CAT-Committee and the CEDAW-Committee. Chapter four traces and assesses the development of the broad standing requirements before the Commission regarding its non-state communications procedure and the problems associated with them. And Chapter five presents the conclusions and recommendations of the study." -- Introduction.

Abstract:
The Inter-American Commission for Human Rights and its partner Court have been major players in the improvement of human rights in Latin America. Since their creation, the two organizations have had a profound effect on the behaviour of states in the region, and have helped to bring the worst abuses of various regimes to the light of international scrutiny. Thanks to the support of the US, but avoiding the restrictions hegemon sponsorship tends to imply, the IACHR and Court have been given the means with which to pursue allegations of human rights violations and punish the offending states. The diffusion of international human rights norms through the channel of human rights law has given these two institutions the necessary framework in which they can operate, and their institutional independence has ensured that their actions have generally been successful and accepted by member states. This provides an important case study in the utility of international organizations, as the Commission and Court have proved that these organizations do indeed have the potential to affect state actions and policies.

Ziegler, Antonia, and Yordan Nikolov Atanasov. "Design systems from a developer’s perspective : What aspects of communication between developers and designers need to change in order to prevent communication breakdown when creating design systems?" Thesis, Jönköping University, Tekniska Högskolan, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-53961.

Full text
Abstract:
Design systems have gained traction in the last few years. They have been primarily used by big tech companies to improve collaboration between designers and developers and to speed up the development process of their digital products. There is no formal definition of what a design system is and what it should entail as of the time of writing. It is believed that communication breakdown during the creation of design systems occurs because designers and developers do not understand each other’s fields of expertise. The purpose of this study is to explore common aspects that cause communication breakdown between developers and designers when creating a design system. The method of choice for this study is semi- structured interviews conducted with frontend/web developers, exploring their views and experiences. The results of this study indicate that there are both similarities and differences between peoples’ views on design systems and that the lack of understanding of a developer's field of work can be seen as an aspect that can cause a communication breakdown. Furthermore, the results imply that one of the factors which can contribute to a more successful understanding of the handoff for developers is the visualization of the design. The major limitations of this study are the lack of scientific literature on the topic of design systems as well as the limited number of participants.

Abstract:
The thesis focuses on the work of Grassroots organizations in Greece after the peak of the 2015 refugee crisis. The research explores their current problems in Greece and their ability to report freely on the migrants situation. The information was gathered based on interviews with key informants from 6 different Grassroots organizations working in Greece. Findings show that there is an anti-NGO movement within the current Greek government. Furthermore, the government has introduced a new harsh registration process for all NGO’s within the migration field, which can determine whether organizations will be allowed to work in Greece or not. This causes fear amongst experts and Grassroots whether they will be able to continue their work in Greece and advocating for the human rights of the refugees and asylum seekers in Greece.

The current dissertation aimed at evaluating the influence of human values, judgment and meaning, and need for cognition in the choice and attributes of postal services. In accordance with these objectives, two studies were conducted. Study 1 aimed at knowing the psychometrics parameters of the Attributes of Postal Services Scale and the Judgment and Meaning Scale for services, and testing the theoretical model with a sample of students. Participants were 215 students of a public university in João Pessoa (PB), most of them females (61.40%), with mean age of 20 years old (sd = 3.79). A preliminary statistical analysis indicated that all items presented satisfactory discriminative power. Prior to performing the factor analysis, the suitability of using this technique was checked, and for both scales results were adequate: Attribute of Postal Services [KMO = 0.70, Bartlett‟s Sphericity Test, χ ² (210) = 1183.31 p <0.001], and Judgment and Meaning Scale [KMO = 0.75, Bartlett‟s Sphericity Test, χ ² (300) = 1210.93, p <0.001]. A PAF (Principal Axis Factoring) was conducted, without fixing the number of factors and rotation. According to what was expected, in both scales a two-factor solution emerged, and reliability indexes (Cronbach‟s Alpha) were 0.81 and 0.76, respectively. These results evince the factor validity and reliability for both instruments. The theoretical model was confirmed by the correlations found between the symbolic attributes of postal services with emotive judgment and meaning (r = 0.46, p <0.01); the normative (r = 0.24, p <0.01 ) and interactional subfunction of values (r = 0.23, p <0.01); and need for cognition (r = -0.15, p <0.05); as well as the correlation found between the utilitarian attributes of postal services with rational judgment and meaning (r = 0.28, p <0.01); and need for cognition (r = 0.14, p <0.05). This model fitted the empirical data [χ ² (7) = 17.77, p = 0.01, χ ² / df = 2.54, GFI = 0.98, AGFI = 0.91, CFI = 0.95 and RMSEA = 0.085 (0.03 - 0.14); PCLOS = 0.10]. The documents‟ importance and the services attributes were better predictors of the choice of postal services, and the mails‟ opening priority was influenced by the psychological variables measured. Study 2 aimed at testing the same theoretical model with a sample of postal service users. Participants were 238 clients of postal offices of João Pessoa (PB), 50.8% were female and the mean age was 32 years old (sd = 11.45). Findings were similar to Study 1 results, with the exception of the correlations hypothesized to need for cognition. The model also proved to be adjusted to the empirical data [χ ² (7) = 14.88, p = 0.04, χ ² / df = 2.13, GFI = 0.98, AGFI = 0.93, CFI = 0, 97 and RMSEA = 0.07 (0.02 - 0.11); PCLOS = 0.22]. The documents‟ importance and the services attributes were better predictors of choice of postal services and mails‟ opening priority. The psychological variables measured showed greater influence in this study. In conclusion, it is hoped that the aims proposed in this dissertation were reached. Therefore, it is likely it presents a contribution to this field in Social Psychology: the influence of psychological variables in the behavior of postal services‟ consumption.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to determine the developmental needs of HRD practitioners in selected departments of the South African Public Service. Developmental needs as an independent variable and the role of HRD practitioners – marketing HRD interventions, conducting training needs analyses, designing and developing HRD interventions, implementing HRD interventions, and monitoring, evaluating and giving feedback on HRD interventions - were investigated. A sample of seventy (70) HRD practitioners working in seven public service departments was drawn. The developmental needs to market HRD interventions, conduct training needs analyses, design and develop HRD interventions, implement HRD interventions, and monitor, evaluate and give feedback on HRD interventions were determined within and between HRD practitioners and public service departments to establish differences and similarities. Results averred that HRD practitioners have developmental needs to perform the abovementioned functions. However, compared to Blacks and Whites, Coloureds and Indians seem to have more developmental needs in marketing, conducting training needs analysis, implementing HRD interventions and generic HRD skills. HRD practitioners from the departments of Health and Transport seemed to have more developmental needs in conducting training needs analyses and designing and developing HRD interventions when compared to other public service departments. Females need more development in marketing and implementing HRD interventions than males. HRD practitioner developmental needs in implementing, monitoring, evaluating, and giving feedback on HRD interventions were the same for all age groups. HRD practitioners in the department of Health and Transport need more development in generic skills compared to other departments. However developmental needs on generic skills are the same for all age groups.

Abstract:
The primary intent of this study is to examine the effects of an outdated job description plan in the Division of Youth Services within the Department of Human Resources. Specifically, this study focuses on the Court Service Workers1 position. An attempt has been made to analyze the impact of an outdated job description plan on the validity of job information, career advancement and compensation of the Court Service Workers. Job descriptions are primary sources of information for all aspects of Human Resource Planning - creating job description is the first important step in translating the goals of the organization into employee work activities. Reliable manpower planning cannot occur without the information that the job descriptions provide - the who, what, when and how of manpower planning cannot be resolved without this information base, hence job description information has to be regularly updated and valididated. The major findings of this study are that the job description utilized for the position of Court Service Workers is outdated because it has not been revised since 1981. This situation has therefore resulted in inadequate compensation for the incumbents of the position. In addition, the position offers only limited career advancement to these workers. The sum total of these problems has resulted in low morale and dissatisfaction among the workers. The main sources of information for this study were obtained from interviews conducted with the Court Service Workers and the Director of Field Services as well as questionnaires sent to the Court Service Workers. Secondary data were obtained from books, documents, pamphlets, reports and journals.

Abstract:
As a product of the armed violence and the human rights violations committed in the decades of the eighties and nineties, the Peruvian government initiated a process of transitional justice in order to compensate the victims and reconcile a fragmented and divided society. However, there are still issues pending in that matter. One of these issues is the search of the missing persons. The present article will delve into the importance of a policy of search of missing persons in the light of the international obligations on human rights matters of the Peruvian state, and will analyze the weaknesses of their judicial actions to accomplish this task. The need of a centralized organism in charge of this function will be sustained, and a normative proposal for its implementation in the Peruvian legal system will be presented.

Moody, Kim Elizabeth. "Political information choices in a media saturated environment : credibility or convenience?" Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2011. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/46042/1/Kim_Moody_Thesis.pdf.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the ways in which citizens find out about socio-political issues. The project set out to discover how audience characteristics such as scepticism towards the media, gratifications sought, need for cognition and political interest influence information selection. While most previous information choice studies have focused on how individuals select from a narrow range of media types, this thesis considered a much wider sweep of the information landscape. This approach was taken to obtain an understanding of information choices in a more authentic context - in everyday life, people are not simply restricted to one or two news sources. Rather, they may obtain political information from a vast range of information sources, including media sources (e.g. radio, television, newspapers) and sources from beyond the media (eg. interpersonal sources, public speaking events, social networking websites). Thus, the study included both media and non-news media information sources. Data collection for the project consisted of a written, postal survey. The survey was administered to a probability sample in the greater Brisbane region, which is the third largest city in Australia. Data was collected during March and April 2008, approximately four months after the 2007 Australian Federal Election. Hence, the study was conducted in a non-election context. 585 usable surveys were obtained. In addition to measuring the attitudinal characteristics listed above, respondents were surveyed as to which information sources (eg. television shows, radio stations, websites and festivals) they usually use to find out about socio-political issues. Multiple linear regression analysis was conducted to explore patterns of influence between the audience characteristics and information consumption patterns. The results of this analysis indicated an apparent difference between the way citizens use news media sources and the way they use information sources from beyond the news media. In essence, it appears that non-news media information sources are used very deliberately to seek socio-political information, while media sources are used in a less purposeful way. If media use in a non-election context, such as that of the present study, is not primarily concerned with deliberate information seeking, media use must instead have other primary purposes, with political information acquisition as either a secondary driver, or a by-product of that primary purpose. It appears, then, that political information consumption in a media-saturated society is more about routine ‘practices’ than it is about ‘information seeking’. The suggestion that media use is no longer primarily concerned with information seeking, but rather, is simply a behaviour which occurs within the broader set of everyday practices reflects Couldry’s (2004) media as practice paradigm. These findings highlight the need for more authentic and holistic contexts for media research. It is insufficient to consider information choices in isolation, or even from a wider range of information sources, such as that incorporated in the present study. Future media research must take greater account of the broader social contexts and practices in which media-oriented behaviours occur. The findings also call into question the previously assumed centrality of trust to information selection decisions. Citizens regularly use media they do not trust to find out about politics. If people are willing to use information sources they do not trust for democratically important topics such as politics, it is important that citizens possess the media literacy skills to effectively understand and evaluate the information they are presented with. Without the application of such media literacy skills, a steady diet of ‘fast food’ media may result in uninformed or misinformed voting decisions, which have implications for the effectiveness of democratic processes. This research has emphasized the need for further holistic and authentically contextualised media use research, to better understand how citizens use information sources to find out about important topics such as politics.

Fellner, Wolfgang, and Benedikt Goehmann. "Human Needs and the Measurement of Welfare." WU Vienna University of Economics and Business, 2017. http://epub.wu.ac.at/5671/1/sre%2Ddisc%2D2017_07.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Adam Smith considered consumption the sole end and purpose of all production. Concerning the measurement of welfare, this requires a sound understanding of the connection between consumption and welfare. The consumerist conceptualization of this connection implies that the amount of consumption equals welfare and the level of production can be an indicator for welfare. The limits and problems of production measures are widely accepted. Yet, indicators like GDP remain the focus of mainstream economic theory and policy. We trace the origin of this lock-in back to the economic model of behaviour and the concept of agency in mainstream economics. The suggested alternative stems from literature about human needs in heterodox economics and psychology. This literature incorporates the relevance of social aspects and cultural change for welfare. It turns out that consumerism can be a threat to well-being and welfare rather than a requirement for it.
