Abstract:
PurposeThe main aim of this paper is to determine how well the UNESCO 2011 Recommendation on Historic Urban Landscape (hereafter, the HUL approach) is understood by the academic community today. It will review relevant research, highlight shortcomings regarding the HUL concept and approach and explore how well the six proposed steps are being considered when implementing the HUL approach.Design/methodology/approachThis paper presents and discusses the results of a systematic review of 140 peer-reviewed publications, published in international academic journals between 2008 and 2019 and available in databases such as WoS and Scopus, such as journal articles, book chapters and books. More specifically, this research takes the six-step process as its theoretical framework in order to understand if the six steps are being followed in the case studies where the HUL approach has been implemented. Following this, it assesses gaps in the HUL concept and approach. The paper explores the HUL implementation management process, investigating what is being done, how it is being done and who is involved.FindingsThe concept ‘Historic Urban Landscape’ has been used in research since 2008. However, the first case studies implementing the HUL approach were not published until 2013. While there is an abundance of theoretical research in relation to the HUL concept and approach from different perspectives and to varying degrees of depth, the case studies which practically demonstrate the HUL approach and its six steps are scarce. This paper will also show how feasible the steps are and which are used the most.Originality/valueThis research demonstrates if the HUL approach is being understood in the academic field and if the implementation of the six steps is being reflected in the literature. This approach will reveal how these steps are being implemented and if this is having an effect on the heritage planning process.

A small tablet fragment acquired by the Iraq Museum raises interesting questions, although at first it appeared to be a simple duplicate manuscript from the large bilingual incantation series Udug-hul. Publishing this fragment has drawn attention to an interesting feature of Mesopotamian incantations, in which the āšipu-exorcist protects himself first, before addressing the patient. Although this practice has been known from Tablet 3 of Udug-hul incantations, it turns out that Assur exorcists occasionally inserted their own names into otherwise anonymous incantations and prayers, in order to ensure their own protection, which is a practice not known from other sites.

Abstract:
In the process of urbanization and globalization, urban conservation reinforces the links among past, present, and future, which enhances local identity and is indispensable for urban sustainability. The concept of Historic Urban Landscape (HUL), as both a notion and an approach, has been playing an increasingly important role in urban conservation discourse. Prioritizing actions is one of the pivotal procedures to perform the HUL approach. Instead of simply focusing on values selected and graded by experts, more attention should be paid to local residents’ satisfaction. A collaborative approach involving communities to prioritize actions in urban conservation and regeneration is proposed. Using the data from residents in the old town of Dandong, China, this study pioneers the application of the Asymmetric Impact-Performance Analysis (AIPA) technique in the urban conservation field. HUL attributes are categorized into basic factors, excitement factors, and performance factors based on their potential asymmetric impact on residents’ satisfaction. By taking performance levels of the attributes into consideration, this study further identifies improvement priorities for HUL, which helps planners and city managers to make rational choices in managing historic cities.

Abstract:
Governance, and specifically local management and institutional systems, is among the key factors affecting the management of World Heritage (WH) properties in urban contexts. The adoption of the 2011 UNESCO Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL approach) promotes a governance reform towards more inclusive and integrated management. The purpose of this paper is to discuss how the HUL approach may help to solve the key governance challenges affecting WH in urban contexts. The governance of WH in three European cities is compared. Edinburgh, Porto, and Florence were chosen for their familiarity with the HUL approach and willingness to provide guidance and review policies and review their policies as management plans. The methodology includes a policy analysis of the management plans followed by a comparative analysis based on the six key governance challenges addressed in the recent literature. The results show that the HUL approach is supporting the governance of WH in urban contexts, and that more inclusive and integrated management has helped address the challenges affecting heritage management.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Growing interest in boosting urban identity and character is increasing the demand for historic maps and documents of cities in constant evolution as in the case of metropolitan areas, peripheries and riverbank sites. A ‘Heritage &amp; Development strategy based on the Historic Urban Landscape approach is required by city makers to ensure that exploitation needs can valorise the site’s natural and cultural heritage for sustainable social and economic optimisation.</p><p>This paper intends to propose innovative virtual hub technologies of brokering, discovering and accessing open data, making available - to a large public of users - the multi-temporal dense stratified evidences of the targeted built environment areas and its surroundings, through the navigation of geo-referenced historical maps, together with current maps, going through design data. Enhancing the practice of publishing maps as open data represents a powerful leverage for time and cost effectiveness among planners, scientists and historians; soliciting their use to gain a vast knowledge of that areas, including a better comprehension of the transformations over the centuries, in order to support decision-making analysis, environmental monitoring and urban area planning; thus contribute to improving the sustainability of interventions respectful of the identity of the urban landscape. A case study of the ‘Deux Rives’ planning area in the city of Strasbourg is presented to illustrate these issues. The City of Strasbourg’s commendable work in publishing the historical maps supports the municipal authority’s Heritage &amp; Development strategy in meeting contemporary and future needs while mitigating long-term damage from pressures for new interventions. Innovative virtual hub based applications to gather open data coming from different sources (city territorial services, design data sources, mobility services) can result in immeasurable added value through communicating the wealth of the planned areas and raising awareness among citizens and visitors of the interventions.</p>

Abstract:
The article focuses on the notion of Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) introduced by the UNESCO in 2005 and 2011 responding to the expanding understanding of cultural heritage and the urgent call to reconcile heritage preservation and contemporary urban developments and re-introduce heritage as a driver of urban and overall societies development. The analysis of the fundamental and recent literature on the theoretical grounding and the applications of HUL had revealed numerous benefits of this concept including the integration potential, acknowledgement of intangible dimensions of heritage and the values of contemporary architecture; however, several challenges and conflicts were identified as well: the challenge of the search of valuable historical patterns, the questions of what extent of change of historic environment is acceptable, and the underlying tension between the call to conserve the existing valuable historical fabric and the urge to employ heritage as the driver for high quality future development. The research suggests that the understanding of the notion of authenticity plays the fundamental role in the success of the HUL approach and, after reviewing the contemporary ideas on heritage authenticity, introduces permanent pervading authenticity, which would allow searching for valuable development patterns based on kairos time instead of chronos in the frame of the HUL concept.

Abstract:

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infected cell protein 0 (ICP0) is a multifunctional protein that functions as a promiscuous transactivator and promotes the degradation of multiple cellular proteins. In vitro studies indicated that it encodes two physically separated functional E3 ubiquitin ligase domains. One, designated herpesvirus ubiquitin ligase 1 (HUL-1), maps to a region encoded by exon 3 and is contained between residues 543 and 680. Deletion of amino acids 621 to 625 abolishes this activity. The second, designated HUL-2, maps to the RING finger domain present in ICP0 encoded by exon 2. Earlier studies have shown that ICP0 stabilizes cyclins D1 and D3, and several lines of investigation led to the hypothesis that this function of ICP0 is the consequence of degradation of the E2 enzyme cdc34, known to be involved in the proteasome-dependent degradation of D-type cyclins. Consistent with this hypothesis, we have previously shown that cdc34 physically interacts with ICP0 at or near aspartate 199 and at amino acids 621 to 625 and that the former site is required for effective ubiquitylation and degradation of cdc34. Furthermore, the ICP0 HUL-1 domain promotes the polyubiquitination of cdc34 in vitro. If the mechanism by which D-type cyclins are salvaged in wild-type-infected cells is dependent on polyubiquitination and consequent destruction of cdc34, than the mutant virus R6701, which was constructed for these studies and lacks ICP0 residues 621 to 625, should destabilize the D cyclins and preclude the degradation of cdc34. We report that ICP0 residues 621 to 625 are essential for degradation of cdc34 in infected cells and for the ICP0-mediated stabilization of D-type cyclins, that a mutation that specifically disrupted the ring finger domain of the HUL-2 site had no effect on the degradation of cdc34 in infected cells, and that deletion of ICP0 residues 621 to 625 decreased the replicative capacity of the virus in growth-arrested but not in dividing cells and resulted in diminished pathogenicity on intracerebral inoculation of mice. We conclude that the ICP0 HUL-1 domain acts in infected cells to degrade cdc34 and that this function requires the interaction of cdc34 with sequences in exons 2 and 3 but does not involve the HUL-2 RING finger E3 domain.

Abstract:
Purpose In last year, the innovations in shipbuilding and logistics have opened the walled towns of Mediterranean port cities to cruise tourism and other culture-led regeneration strategies. Thus, walled towns in Mediterranean port cities have a particular development potential which questions about the opportunities and risks connected to any comprehensive regeneration strategy with a cultural and tourist purpose, especially for fortified systems whose continuity has been undermined. The paper aims to provide some guidelines for policy-makers and planners in port cities which have decided or are deciding to develop a comprehensive strategy and a knowledge framework for the walled town similar to those already adopted for fortified sites in the World Heritage List. Design/methodology/approach The paper investigates on the opportunities and risks connected to any comprehensive regeneration strategy with a cultural and tourist purpose for the walled towns through a comparative analysis of four Mediterranean seaport cities, selected as case studies. Cities which have developed an integrated strategy to inscribe their walled towns to the UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Findings On the base of the case studies’ analysis, the paper proposes a critical reflection upon the management strategies for the UNESCO’s walled towns and supports a better understating of context factors as a way to strengthen the HUL approach when applied to Mediterranean seaport cities. Originality/value The paper sheds light on the application of the historic urban landscape approach to the walled towns of Mediterranean seaport cities. The paper is original because it provides: guidelines for policy-makers and planners in walled towns of Mediterranean seaport cities which have decided or are deciding to develop a comprehensive regeneration strategy for the city centre in line with those adopted in UNESCO’s fortified sites; a critical reflection upon the context factors which can strengthen the HUL approach when applied to Mediterranean seaport cities; criteria to update the HUL approach by UNESCO in analysing the conservation state, the managerial aspects, the participation and social aspects of walled towns.

Abstract:
Purpose In 2011, UNESCO recommended the application of a value-based landscape approach to cultural heritage conservation. In this framework, culture in its manifold expressions is considered as an embrace for the social, economic, and environmental pillars of sustainable development. There is a need to unveil the different cultural values generated from the interaction between people and their environment since these values will help cities maintain their unique identity and integrity. Accordingly, the purpose of this paper is to present the results of a survey method intended to assess the range of cultural values attributed by people to the historic urban landscape (HUL). Design/methodology/approach This paper is an experimental enquiry that combines a qualitative and a quantitative approach. It is designed to distinguish the different interpretations and outlooks of people to the HUL. It integrates landscape preference studies with investigation on representative images of the city and assesses these in relation to activities, feelings, and valued aspects of landscapes. Findings The main finding is that the most preferred scenes of the city are not the ones that best represent the city. Results exposed two sides of the HUL and related heritage values. The first is associated with the scenic beauty of the landscape and its aesthetic values, while the second is reflected in ordinary landscapes and everyday practices. Originality/value This paper provides an insight into the different interpretations and meanings of the HUL throughout the city. It provides an empirical evidence that ordinary landscapes are of great heritage value as they surpass all aspects of human environmental interaction to contribute to the image that societies make of themselves.

Abstract:
Theoretical basis Consumption and consumer behaviour are driven by social and cultural factors. The global movement against racism and skin colour bias has created a situation where companies need to relook at the way they are marketing skin lightening and cosmetic products in an emerging economy like India. Research methodology The case study was developed by collecting data from news articles and published research. Case overview/synopsis Johnson and Johnson in June 2020 decided to stop selling products under the category of Skin lightening popularly known as fairness creams in Asian markets, especially India. This created a dilemma for popular brands like Hindustan Unilever (HUL), Loreal and Procter & Gamble which have brands under this category. Among all these brands the biggest challenge is for HUL which is a major player in this segment. The case discusses the cosmetic industry in India and how HUL responded to this situation. Complexity academic level The case is intended for use in graduate-level courses in consumer behaviour, new product development, integrated marketing communication and marketing. Market environment, cultural and social factors and the importance of considering these factors in developing the product and marketing strategy is the focus of this case.

Abstract:
A new technique is proposed in this study to correct the gummy smile (GS) with myotomy, combining lip repositioning with the insertion of polyester threads at the surgical site to act as a physical barrier and control relapse. 11 patients were clinically assessed (30.2 ± 7.43 years old, 90.9% females and 9.10% males). All patients presented gingival display (GD) greater than 4 mm. Hypermobile upper lip (HUL), vertical maxillary excess (VME) + HUL, altered passive eruption (APE) + HUL, and VME + APE were the etiologies identified. Three polyester threads were inserted in each patient one month after the surgery. The GS was measured before, 6 months, and 12 months after the surgery. The results showed a reduction in the mean GD of the patients, 4.42 mm after 6 months ( p value = 0.000) and 4.13 mm after 12 months ( p value = 0.000). The largest relapse was 0.29 mm and was not statistically significant ( p value = 0.07). The Friedman test with pairwise comparisons was used to determine the existence of statistically significant differences in GD between the periods analyzed. The results showed that the proposed technique was successful in treating GS, presenting significant reductions in the GD 12 months after surgery and controlling the relapse.

Abstract:
The landscape, as an archive of the traces of the history of man and nature, can be considered a holistic indicator of sustainable, inclusive, safe, resilient cities as set out in Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development. The UNESCO Recommendations on Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) reflect it as a dynamic/evolving system that changes over time to meet social needs: it requires to be managed in a sustainable way, not only as a resource to be preserved. The beauty of the landscape is a common element in the development policies of many small-medium European and Italian cities. However, the state of abandonment and decay, the lack of investments, of often emigrated skills are the detractors. The circular economy model applied to the HUL leads to the ability to maximize the value of settlements, activating social, economic and environmental synergies. The research identifies the relationship among Circularity, Productivity and Resilience as an effective key to achieve the goals of Agenda 2030. The methodological approach tested on the case study of Torre Annunziata, Naples has reached a system of resilience performance indicators to express the complex nature of HUL and define a scenario of circular regeneration, based on the recreation of a virtuous circuit between physical, environmental, social, economic systems.

Imminent retirement: Pastors’ experience of their congregation, personal well-being and financesThe provisions of pastors to congregations is of great importance to the Dutch Reformed Church and its congregation. To retire is a complex process of transition affecting various aspects – among others psychological, spiritual and financial aspects. According to current estimates, more than half of the full-time pastors in the Dutch Reformed Church could retire within the next fifteen years. A quantitative online survey was conducted amongst pastors who will retire in the near future, their experience of their congregation, personal well-being and financial prospects before and during retirement was taken into account. For the first time research provides insight into what will happen in churches when a pastor retires. The information should provide valid conclusions and recommendations can be made regarding the demand for pastors (and students?) in order to plan for effective ministry within churches.

Abstract:
The Afrikaans reformed Churches in South Africa and their worshipWorship as a major window on church life remains one of the most visible and obvious areas to discover and identify changes, movements and transformation quickly. Worship also reflects clearly on the way we experience the church. John van de Laar puts it aptly when he stated that “the way we worship, defines the way we live”. The question being addressed in this article is whether there have been some clear changes in the style of worshipping in these South African reformed churches and if so, why. In a brief overview the focus is on, inter alia, the most important areas of the worship of the church, that is, liturgy and the church service, preaching, church music and hymns, sacraments, small groups, and contemplative services. Many challenges remain; the important reality also remains that changes ought to be according to the basic principles of Scripture and the confessional tradition, always with a realisation of our contextuality in Africa and the needs of the 21st century.

Abstract:
Abstract As English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) continues to expand across the globe, there is a glaring absence of research on assessment. This article reviews the scarce literature to date and maps out a research agenda for the future. Drawing on Shohamy’s (2001, 2007) Critical Language Testing and McNamara et al.’s (2019) notions of “fair” and “just” language assessment, our reading of the literature to date is that it has revealed considerable complexities around implementing assessment in EMI contexts, with key questions centring not only on what and who to assess but also on how and why assessment should take place. In outlining a research agenda for the future, we suggest that one way of bypassing such challenges may be to carve out a greater role for assessment for learning in higher education. This could capitalize on – and raise stakeholders’ awareness of – bodies of knowledge that are well established within applied linguistics about the integral role of language in learning. Whilst we acknowledge challenges in securing institutional buy-in for putting this agenda into practice, we suggest that doing so could turn assessment challenges into opportunities and significantly enhance learning not only in EMI contexts but beyond.

Abstract:
Lentil (Lens culinaris Medic.) can be a potential crop to intensify the rice (Oryza sativa L.) fallow land of Tripura to meet out the pulses requirement of the state. Thus, five lentil varieties, i.e. HUL-57, WBL-77, WBL-58, PL-06 and NDL-1 were demonstrated under three establishment methods, i.e. minimum till (MT), no-till (NT) and paira cropping (PC) on 75 farmers’ field at Moracherra, Dhalai, Tripura during winter seasons of 2012–14 in a participatory mode to gear up the pulse production in the state. Study revealed that the cultivation of lentil under MT and NT systems resulted in more number of branches/plant, pods/plant, seeds/pod and seed yield than those planted under PC. Hence, the farmers planted lentil under MT obtained more gross and net returns than those planted lentil under NT and PC. However, benefit to cost (B:C) ratio was significantly higher under PC than the other establishment methods. Lentil variety HUL-57 outperformed other varieties with respect to number of branches/plant, pods/plant, seeds/pod, seed yield and also recorded the highest gross and net returns and B:C ratio followed by WBL-77, WBL-58. Therefore, study recommended the cultivation of lentil varieties HUL-57, WBL-77 and WBL-58 under minimum tillage system for intensifying the rice fallows of Tripura to boost up the pulses production in the state.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of first-time mothers with colic infants. The research design was qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual. Data were collected by means of in-depth, semistructured, phenomenological interviews and a descriptive analysis was done. The results show that the real experience of having a baby did not meet mothers’ expectations. Furthermore, colic babies were anxiety-provoking and mothers struggled with feelings of failure. They searched for an explanation for the colic, but felt disillusioned with the medical profession. Mothers exhibited a need for a containing figure. They also reflected on their relationship with their mothers. Mothers felt ambivalent towards their babies and marital relationships became strained. Lastly, mothers renegotiated their identity. Based on the results, suggestions for mental health professions were made with regard to providing parent-child therapy, support for the mother and strengthening the marital relationship. The importance of psychological interventions was emphasised as a source of support for these mothers.

Abstract:
The historic urban landscape (HUL) is the result of the continuous dynamic process of production, interaction, and accumulation. It is full of information from bygone years and remains to this day as a living witness of antiquity and a benefit to the contemporary public, both in mind and spirit. These intangible benefits, however, are easier to overlook than the tangible ones in conservation and management efforts that aim at sustainability. Therefore, we return to the prototype of the category “cultural services” in the ecosystem classification “information service” to evaluate these intangible benefits. The objectives of this study are: (1) to provide a methodological framework to assess the ability of the landscape to continuously provide information services in the historical process; (2) to analyze the drivers affecting HUL’s ability to continuously deliver information services, and then discuss the governance experience of HUL’s intangible dimensions for sustainability. First, we regard HUL as an object to learn from the experience of urban heritage governance: using the methods and tools of ecosystem service evaluation, this paper evaluates the intangible services that the public receives from the landscape over several consecutive historical periods, summarizes the dynamic changes in these services, and analyzes their drivers. Furthermore, we consider that the aforementioned intangible services are brought about in part by the spread of heritage information stored in HUL among specific people, and the continuous provision of information services is considered the sustainability of HUL in intangible dimensions. We use Yuexiu Hill in the center of Guangzhou, China, as a case study to verify the feasibility of our methodological framework by evaluating the information services provided by this ancient area with a construction history of 2000 years over five historical periods. The data needed for the evaluation of the information service was obtained through text mining by retrieving 1063 ancient Chinese poems related to Yuexiu Hill from the poetry database. The results obtained through this evaluation framework will provide a quantitative basis for planning, design, and decision making in small and medium-sized landscapes.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The financial performance of the top two companies of the FMCG sector HUL and ITC are analyzed in this research paper by using the two most popular financial tools of analysis i.e., ROE and ROA. Similar to the DuPont method, components of Return on Equity (ROE) and Return on Asset (ROA) are segregated to do the analysis of financial performance and to accomplish the objective. To calculate ROE and ROA, ratios such as net profit ratio (NPR), total asset turnover ratio (TATR), and equity multiplier (EQM) will be used. It is observed that the use of financial leverage was mainly responsible for the whole decrease in return on equity (ROE). In terms of return on equity, we found that the Asset Turnover Ratio increases somewhat, while in the case of ITC, the ratio either remains the same or slightly decreases in value. As a result, HUL's total asset turnover ratio (TATR) is greater than that of ITC, suggesting that HUL is more efficient in its asset use. We were able to demonstrate statistically, via the use of the One-way Anova test, that there is a significant meaningful association among the ratios.

The foundations of the heritage protection - its paradigm, have been created in the first half of the 20th century. This paradigm is officially still in force - primarily because we do not have a coherent concept, which could link the requirements of the traditional protection of historic monuments and the diversity of today’s circumstances. Therefore, international document that introduces new elements, deserves particular analysis. This document is the Historic Urban Landscape Recommendation, which formulates a new approach to heritage and its protection. HUL Recommendation was adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO - the most important international meeting on culture; this is the Recommendation – such a type of document should be implemented by the Member States (which is explicitly formulated in the text of Recommendation); its subject is historical city – the most important part of heritage. From this point of view, the HUL Recommendation deserves special attention.

Abstract:
Historic Urban Landscape is the consequence of dynamic interrelationships between physical, ecological, and cultural factors in a causality based dynamic system. In recent years, urban development plans, inattentive to ecological and historical structures of landscape, have led to segregation of urban values. At a time of rapid urbanization, the conservation of historic cities is one of the most urgent challenges. Reviewing the principles and policies has led to a theoretical framework, based on approved approaches toward the subject for conservative planning. Abstract:
Today, the ‘landscape’ concept of geography is an important part of the UNESCO’s approach to evaluating, inscribing, and managing World Heritages. Recently the UNESCO’s ‘Historic Urban Landscape (HUL)’ approach contributes to a comprehensive coverage by maintaining a holistic view based on the landscape concept of geography, relating the historic districts within the city to ecological, social, and cultural dimensions, daily life of citizens, promotion of current happiness, and sustainable development. The UNESCO’s HUL approach should be taken seriously when our designing plans for re-recognition and management of the heritage values of eupchi (county seat) landscapes of the Joseon Dynasty scattered throughout the Korean Peninsula today. From this point of view, the author took Gongju Eupchi as a case, drew values as the traditional cityscape of Korea, reflected on the existing understanding of the Eupchi landscape from academic, civil society, and institutional aspects, and presented future development tasks.
