Abstract:
The objective of this collection o fpotatoes expedition was to collect germplasm of potatoes wild species for their conservation and regeneration to put them available to the international scientific community as well as to gather field data to carry on taxonomic studies. Atotal of accessions of five species was collected. Thirteen accessions of Solanum agrimonifolium were collected in the Huehuetenango, San Marcos, Quetzaltenango, Totonicapán, Sololá and Chimaltenango provinces located in altitudes ranging from 2,340 to 3,300 meters above sea level (masl); six accessions of S. bulbocastanum subsp. partitum were gotten in the Huehuetenango and Baja Verapaz provinces; 17 accessions of S. clarum were found in the Huehuetenango, San Marcos, Sololá, and Totonicapán provinces in altitudes extending from 3,000 to 3,500 masl; on1y one accession of S. demissum was found in Totonicapán province; and six accessions of S. morelliforme were gotten in Huehuetenango, San Marcos and Totonicapán provinces in altitudes ranging from 2,900 to 3,050 masl. The habitats where these species grow are very dist urbed due to deforestation and changes in the use of the soil. As a result, the guatemalan potato wild species are endangered species. It is notorious that in many locations where 50 years ago wild germplasm was gathered it no longer exist.

Abstract:
AbstractWe conducted a study on food habits of grey fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) in the mixed forest of Finca Chaculá en Nentón, Huehuetenango, Guatemala, through the quantification of food items in scats. We collected samples, all of which contained seeds of Juniperus comitana, an endangered cipres endemic to the region. We also detected remains of small mammals (Peromyscus mexicanus, P. aztecus, Soricidae and Didelphidae), birds and insects (Coleoptera, Carabidae and Orthoptera), with a relative frequency of 0.35, 0.14 and 0.35 respectively. An average of 72 seeds per feces sample were obtained; this shows the importance of researching the legitimacy and effectivity of the grey fox as a J. comitana seed dispersal agent.Key words: endangered cipres, food habits, grey fox, Huehuetenango, mixed forest.

Abstract:
In Latin America, onchocerciasis is targeted for elimination by 2012 through twice-yearly mass treatment of the eligible population with ivermectin. In Guatemala, two of the four historical endemic foci have demonstrated elimination of transmission, following World Health Organization guidelines. Using established guidelines ophthalmological, serological, and entomological evaluations were conducted in 2007-8 to determine the transmission status of onchocerciasis in the Huehuetenango focus. The prevalence ofOnchocerca volvulusmicrofilariae in the anterior segment of the eye in 365 residents was 0% (95% confidence interval [CI] 0–0.8%), the prevalence of infection ofO. volvulusinSimulium ochraceumamong 8252 flies collected between November 2007 and April 2008 was 0% (95% CI 0–0.02%), and the prevalence of antibodies to a recombinantO. volvulusantigen in 3118 school age children was 0% (95% CI 0–0.1%). These results showed transmission interruption; thus, in 2009 mass treatment was halted and posttreatment surveillance began. To verify for potential recrudescence an entomological evaluation (from December 2010 to April 2011) was conducted during the 2nd and 3rd year of posttreatment surveillance. A total of 4587S. ochraceumwere collected, and the prevalence of infection ofO. volvuluswas 0% (95% CI 0–0.04%). Transmission of onchocerciasis in the Huehuetenango focus has been eliminated.

Gerlicz, Andrew. "Diversification Strategies and Contributions of Coffee Income to Poverty Alleviation Among Smallholders in Northern Huehuetenango and Quiche Departments, Guatemala." ScholarWorks @ UVM, 2016. https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/graddis/605.

Full text
Abstract:
In the past two decades, Mesoamerican smallholder coffee farmers have had to confront several stressors and shocks, such as price crises and natural disasters, with debilitating impacts on the viability of their livelihoods. More recently, many farmers have suffered crop losses in the wake of the spread of coffee leaf rust disease, and researchers are predicting that some areas will become less suitable for coffee growing in the near future as a result of climate change. In response to these conditions and in the context of the withdrawal of the state from provision of agricultural services, development practitioners have mainly pursued a strategy of helping farmers gain access to specialty markets, including those purchasing coffee from farmers with organic and Fair Trade certifications. They have also promoted farmer organization into marketing cooperatives, which have in turn provided various services to their members, including credit and technical assistance. However, there are doubts as to whether these schemes are sufficient in increasing and stabilizing smallholder incomes, and some have predicted declining returns from these strategies in the future. For these reasons, many have called for the promotion of livelihood diversification as an additional component of rural development programs. This thesis studies both the shortfalls in coffee incomes compared to poverty lines and the current uses and perceptions of different diversification activities. In the first study, the shortfalls are calculated through construction of individual and average enterprise budgets based on grower records and interviews with four organic and organized growers and three conventional growers. It concludes that while some growers have coffee incomes approaching that poverty line, they are all currently below the line. There is wide variation within both groups. The second study uses content analysis of transcripts from 15 interviews with members of a regional coffee cooperative, Asociación Barillense de Agricultores (ASOBAGRI), based on four different interview guides. It concludes that coffee remains the primary livelihood strategy of the respondents, whereas most other activities offer relatively small contributions to incomes, with the exception of honey and a small sewing shop, and some reflect coping rather than risk management. The study also identified other themes mediating diversification, including income-smoothing, optimization, familiarity, social networks, and influences from external actors.

"Maya power and state culture: Community, indigenous politics, and state formation in Northern Huehuetenango, Guatemala, 1800--1871." Tulane University, 2008.

Abstract:
This dissertation is a regional study of community, indigenous politics, and state formation in nineteenth-century Guatemala. Drawing on primary source material and ethnographic accounts concerning Q'anjob'alan-speaking Maya peoples in the northern Huehuetenango region during the period 1800-1871, it charts a series of transformations and struggles over the meaning of community, nation, and indigenous identity as these were contested by local and national actors in a specific place and time. Taking a broad anthropological approach to Maya political action and state formation, it examines a diverse array of phenomena on a variety of temporal and spatial scales, including ritual practices, ethnic and racial classification, law, office-holding, alcohol use, and land tenure. Based on this examination, new anthropological, historiographic, and theoretical insights are reached into the nature of ethnic relations, Maya community organization, state formation, and indigenous politics in Guatemala over time

Abstract:
This chapter explores various types of headless relative clause constructions in Chuj, a Mayan language spoken in Huehuetenango, Guatemala, and Chiapas, Mexico by 45,000 to 70,000 speakers. The main focus is free relative clauses, of which Chuj features three kinds: maximal free relative clauses, existential free relative clauses, and free-choice free relative clauses. Following earlier work on other languages, maximal free relative clauses and existential free relative clauses are argued to be structurally identical at their core; the difference in their interpretations is a consequence of a difference in the elements that each kind combines with. Chuj is also shown to feature a rich inventory of other types of headless relative clauses. These include headless relative clauses introduced by both a wh-word and a determiner [+WH, +DET], those introduced only by a determiner [−WH, +DET], and those that are formed with neither a wh-word nor a determiner [−WH, −DET].
