Abstract:
Overexposure to hand-transmitted vibrations (HTVs) is a serious concern within industries that use vibrating power tools as HTVs can lead to severe and chronic injuries to the hand-arm system, which are preventable by limiting vibration exposure. This study presents a novel vibration-sensing electronic yarn (E-yarn) that can be used to monitor HTVs at the point-of-entry of the vibrations into the hand. The construction of the vibration-sensing E-yarn is described, with the vibration-sensing E-yarns being fully characterised at each stage of the manufacturing process to understand how the manufacturing stages affect the behaviour of the embedded sensor. The results show that there is no significant difference in the sensor response at each of the three stages in the E-yarn production over a range of frequencies and amplitudes relevant to HTVs.

Abstract:
Dengue and other common tropical infectious diseases of similar clinical presentation are endemic in Indonesia, which may lead to an underestimation of the prevalence of hantavirus (HTV) infection in the country. To better understand the current burden of HTV infection, this study aimed to both identify acute HTV infection among hospitalized patients with fever and to determine the overall seroprevalence of HTV. These results were further considered within the context of previously reported HTV infection in humans and animals in Indonesia by conducting a review of published literature. As part of an observational cohort study of acute febrile illness, this sub-study retrospectively analyzed blood specimens obtained during admission, during the 2–4-week convalescent period, and three months after admission. Convalescent specimens from patients with clinical signs and symptoms of HTV infection were first screened for HTV IgG. When positive, convalescent specimens and paired acute specimens were screened for HTV IgM, and paired acute specimens were tested for HTV by Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR). A literature review of HTV in Indonesia was conducted on manuscripts manually reviewed for relevance after identification from a search using the terms “hantavirus/Seoul virus” and “Indonesia”. From patients at eight hospitals in seven provincial capitals, HTV IgG seroprevalence was 11.6% (38/327), with the highest being in Denpasar (16.3%, 7/43) and the lowest being in Yogyakarta (3.4%, 1/31). Anti-HTV IgG was most prevalent in adults (13.5%, 33/244) and males (15.6%, 29/186). Acute HTV infections were identified in two subjects, both of whom had Seoul virus. In Indonesia, HTVs have been studied in humans and animals since 1984. Over the past 35 years, the reported seroprevalences in rodents ranged from 0% to 34%, and in humans from 0% to 13%. Fourteen acute infections have been reported, including one in a tourist returning to Germany, but only two have been confirmed by RT-PCR. Almost all rodent and human surveillance results demonstrated serological and molecular evidence of Seoul virus infection. However, in Semarang, anti-Puumala virus IgM has been detected in humans and Puumala RNA in one rodent. In Serang, a new virus named Serang virus was identified due to its differences from Seoul virus. In Maumere, HTV and Leptospira spp. were identified simultaneously in rodents. The burden of HTV infection in Indonesia is underestimated, and additional studies are needed to understand the true prevalence. Seroprevalence data reported here, previous observations of HTV co-infections in rodents, and the prevalence of rodent-borne bacterial infections in Indonesia suggest that the population may be routinely encountering HTVs. While Seoul virus appears to be the most prevalent HTV in the country, further studies are needed to understand which HTVs are circulating.

Abstract:
Quinones are one of the most promising and widely investigated classes of redox active materials for organic aqueous redox flow batteries. However, quinone-based flow batteries still lack the necessary performance in terms of metrics, such as specific capacity, power density, and long-term stability, to achieve mass market adoption. These performance metrics are directly related to the physicochemical properties of the quinone molecules, including their equilibrium redox potential, aqueous solubility, and chemical stability. Given the enormous chemical and configurational space of possible quinones and the high tunability of their properties, there has been a recent surge in the use of high-throughput virtual screening (HTVS) for the rational design and discovery of new high-performing molecules. In this review article, HTVS efforts for the computational design and discovery of quinones are reviewed with a special focus on the enumerated space of core quinone motif, the methods and approximations used for the estimation of performance descriptors, and the emergent structure-property relationships. The knowledge and methodological gaps in conventional HTVS efforts are discussed, and strategies for improvement are suggested.

Abstract:
Overexposure to hand transmitted vibrations (HTVs) from prolonged use of vibrating power tools can result in severe injuries. By monitoring the exposure of a worker to HTVs, overexposure, and injury, can be mitigated. An ideal HTV-monitoring system would measure vibration were it enters the body, which for many power tools will be the palm and fingers, however this is difficult to achieve using conventional transducers as they will affect the comfort of the user and subsequently alter the way that the tool is held. By embedding a transducer within the core of a textile yarn, that can be used to produce a glove, vibration can be monitored close to where it enters the body without compromising the comfort of the user. This work presents a vibration-sensing electronic yarn that was created by embedding a commercially available accelerometer within the structure of a yarn. These yarns were subsequently used to produce a vibration-sensing glove. The purpose of this study is to characterize the response of the embedded accelerometer over a range of relevant frequencies and vibration amplitudes at each stage of the electronic yarn’s manufacture to understand how the yarn structure influences the sensors response. The vibration-sensing electronic yarn was subsequently incorporated into a fabric sample and characterized. Finally, four vibration-sensing electronic yarns were used to produce a vibration-sensing glove that is capable of monitoring vibration at the palm and index finger.

Abstract:
In this study, the hybrid Taguchi vortex search (HTVS) algorithm, which exhibits a rapid convergence rate and avoids local optima, is employed as a new training algorithm for feed-forward neural networks (FNNs) and its performance was analyzed by comparing it with the vortex search (VS) algorithm, the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, the gravitational search algorithm (GSA) and the hybrid PSOGSA algorithm. The HTVS-based FNN (FNNHTVS) algorithm was applied to three datasets (iris classification, wine recognition and seed classification) taken from the UCI database (the machine learning repository of the University of California at Irvine) and to the 3-bit parity problem. The obtained statistical results were recorded for comparison. Then, the proposed algorithm was used for fault classification on transmission lines. A dataset was created using 735 kV, 60 Hz, 100 km transmission lines for different fault types, fault locations, fault resistance values and fault inception angles. The FNNHTVS algorithm was applied to this dataset and its performance was tested in comparison with that of other classifiers. The results indicated that the performance of the FNNHTVS algorithm was at least as successful as that of the other comparison algorithms. It has been shown that the FNN model trained with HTVS can be used as a capable alternative algorithm for the solution of classification problems.

Abstract:
Monkeypox virus (MPXV) is a member of the Orthopoxvirus genus and the Poxviridae family, which instigated a rising epidemic called monkeypox disease. Proteinases are majorly engaged in viral propagation by catalyzing the cleavage of precursor polyproteins. Therefore, proteinase is essential for monkeypox and a critical drug target. In this study, high-throughput virtual screening (HTVS) and molecular dynamics simulation were applied to detect the potential natural compounds against the proteinase of the monkeypox virus. Here, 32,552 natural products were screened, and the top five compounds were selected after implementing the HTVS and molecular docking protocols in series. Gallicynoic Acid F showed the minimum binding score of −10.56 kcal/mole in the extra precision scoring method, which reflected the highest binding with the protein. The top five compounds showed binding scores ≤−8.98 kcal/mole. These compound complexes were tested under 100 ns molecular dynamics simulation, and Vaccinol M showed the most stable and consistent RMSD trend in the range of 2 Å to 3 Å. Later, MM/GBSA binding free energy and principal component analysis were performed on the top five compounds to validate the stability of selected compound complexes. Moreover, the ligands Gallicynoic Acid F and H2-Erythro-Neopterin showed the lowest binding free energies of −61.42 kcal/mol and −61.09 kcal/mol, respectively. Compared to the native ligand TTP-6171 (ΔGBind = −53.86 kcal/mol), these two compounds showed preferable binding free energy, suggesting inhibitory application against MPXV proteinase. This study proposed natural molecules as a therapeutic solution to control monkeypox disease.

Abstract:
Power distribution networks face the upcoming challenge of managing the increase of power demand predicted worldwide. Power grid capacity is limited by the number of lines deployed and their characteristics, including conductor section, spacing, or number of phases, among others. Building new lines is costly and faces population opposition in many places. Therefore, a new conductor technology designed to upgrade the existing power lines has arisen. This technology, known as High Temperature Low-Sag (HTLS), permits the rise of capacity of existing power lines without modifying the supporting structures. Nowadays, the conductor technology is mature and under commercialization. But, there is the need to design and assess the behaviour of some auxiliary accessories needed to operate power lines equipped with HTLS conductors. Specifically, the substation connector industry is still developing HTLS substation connectors. From all the design process, the validation of the performance of these products is still a milestone. Currently, the tests performed to hardware for power lines are costly in terms of required infrastructures, testing time, power requirements, monetary cost and environmental affectation. Moreover, many of these tests can only be performed in few facilities all around the world. Furthermore, from an industrial scope, there is a growing interest to obtain the data of such tests in onsite industrial laboratories. Thus, this thesis develops a set of reduced-scale tests equivalent to the ones performed on full-scale connectors to validate the performance of the new designs. This thesis also performs a critical review of some of the methodologies that currently are being applied to assess products lifetime, and proposes the use of modern approaches. Concluding, this document aims to develop a series of test procedures that provide data about the validity of the newly required substation connectors designs in a cheaper, faster, and environmentally-friendlier way, whilst allowing to test the connectors in industrial laboratories, which have much less requirements than those of the full-scale test, since the later often require to be carried out in singular and scarce facilities.

Capelli, Francesca. "Development of high-capacity substation connectors compatible with HTLS technology." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/404412.

Full text
Abstract:
The advent of HTLS (High Temperature, Low Sag) conductors imposes more severe operating conditions on devices such as substation connectors intended for transmission and distribution systems, which are subjected to higher loads and have to operate at higher temperatures. The main objective of this thesis is the development of a new family of high-capacity substation connectors compatible with the HTLS technology. The first aspect that has been analyzed is the selection of the base material. At present, substation connectors are manufactured by using A356 cast aluminum alloy due to its good castability and physical properties. However, due to the new operating conditions introduced by the HTLS technology, A356 alloy needs to be further improved. A chemical treatment (modification) has been proposed to fulfill the requirements of high-capacity substation connectors' material. Experimental measurements of electrical, thermal and mechanical properties have been carried out to characterize and compare properties of both un-modified and modified alloys. Moreover, their electrical resistivity has been evaluated from cryogenic up to 200ºC, to find out the temperature coefficient of resistivity. Experimental measurements prove that chemical modification improves mechanical, electrical and thermal properties of A356.0 alloy. Moreover, to design the new family of connectors it is necessary to take into account the contact resistance. The contact resistance defines the energy-efficiency, the stable performance and the long-term service of an electrical connection. To reduce the contact resistance a new installation procedure has been proposed in this thesis. Thermal behavior of connectors installed with the new procedure has been compared with the traditional one, through standardized temperature rise, thermal cycle and short-circuit tests. Results show a lower operating temperature and degradation rate for connectors installed with the new procedure. Moreover, the temperature coefficient of contact resistance has been determined through an experimental test. To accurately predict the thermal behavior of substation connectors, it is important to estimate the electrical constriction resistance (ECR). Different ECR models have been compared with experimental measurements. The fractal model for rough surfaces shows closer agreement with experimental data, however, they are based on several parameters dependent on the surfaces' roughness, whose values need to be tuned for each application. A software tool based on a genetic algorithm approach has been developed to obtain an accurate prediction of the contact resistance. Furthermore, advanced 3D-FEM modelling tools to perform realistic simulations of the short-time and peak withstand current and temperature rise tests have been developed. Substation connectors must pass these compulsory tests, which require high-power laboratory facilities, are very power-consuming and thus very expensive. The development of a realistic simulation tool is essential for anticipating the results of the mandatory laboratory tests in a fast and inexpensive way. In this thesis electromagnetic-thermal multiphysics 3D-FEM tools to simulate the transient thermal behavior of substation connectors during the standard short-circuit and temperature rise tests have been developed. Finally the thesis deals with the loop inductance. The estimation of the loop inductance is very important as it determines voltage drop in conductors. Inductance estimation provided by formulas has been compared with FEM simulations and experimental measurements. Furthermore, a simple setup to reduce the reactive power consumption when conducting short-circuit tests, based on placing a conductor forming a closed inner loop concentric with the testing loop, has been proposed and optimized trough 3D-FEM simulations.

Abstract:
High Tc superconductors are enabling in the generation of extremely high magnetic fields. Flux pumping is a promising technology which can be used to operate HTS magnets without significant loss. In this decade, several HTS flux pumps based on travelling magnetic waves have been developed, yet their physics is still unclear. This thesis established a framework in the area of flux pumping for HTS coils. It revealed the underlying physics of existing travelling wave flux pumps, which is an important theoretical contribution. Based on the thorough understanding of flux pumping mechanism, the author proposed two novel types of flux pumps. The new inventions make flux pumping much easier, more controllable, and much less energy consuming. These flux pumps may promote the future applications of HTS magnets. This thesis can be a guidebook for researchers and engineers in developing flux pumps.

Abstract:
Heavy Marine Transport is a well accepted method to move large heavy offshore related floating structures around the world. This type of transport is normally limited to getting from and going to sheltered locations, where loading and discharge operation of these objects are safely carried out in very mild environment. However, there is an increasing demand for loading and discharge at offshore locations; and as these operations are sensitive to environmental criteria, this has consequences for the scheduling issues. Also, with increasing size and weight of offshore structures and the desire to deliver these objects directly to remote offshore location, larger Heavy Transport Vessels are required, which may need to operate in higher sea-states than presently considered safe. These safe conditions are mainly based on long term experience. Assessment of the hydrodynamic behavior of submerged HTVs and cargo in rough seaway, in short Offshore Loading / Discharge, will contribute to extending the scope and operability of HTVs. Also, this investigation will contribute to safety by creating more insight in heavy transport operations. Research and development projects in the past have dealt with many aspects of Offshore Loading/Discharge. Both the basic design (of both HTV and systems) and hydrodynamic behavior are investigated. Problems were encountered in the area of predicting the relative behavior of floating structure above a HTV. Investigations have shown that inaccuracy is mainly caused due to the narrow gap between cargo and HTV. Development of an accurate, quick and cost-effective method for the prediction of hydrodynamic behavior of cargo floating above a HTV is in progress. This paper is presenting theory and limitations of an adapted multi-body diffraction theory. The adapted theory uses different domains in which different solution methods are used. For the flow in the gap between cargo and HTV, a 2D solution is used, whereas for the outside domain standard 3D potential solution is applied. Because of analogy with the single-body floating object in shallow water with narrow gap between body and seafloor, model tests have been performed with different shapes; these shapes are representing typical cargos. The results of the measurements for the different shapes are compared and gap flow phenomenon is explained.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Nucleate pool boiling heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) of 14 refrigerants are measured from a 19mm o.d. plain copper tube heated by a cartridge heater. All measurements are carried out in the pool temperature of 4∼25°C and in the heat flux of 10∼80kW/m2. Test results show that HTCs of R32, R125, R143a, R152a, and R410A are higher than those of R22. Especially, R32 showed the highest HTCs among all the refrigerants tested. As for R22 alternatives, HTCs of R410A are 50% higher than those of R22 while those of R407C are very similar to those of R22. It is also found that some of the popular pool boiling heat transfer correlations in the literature failed to predict the HTCs of newly developed alternative refrigerants. Hence, a dimensionless analysis is carried out in an attempt to develop a general correlation for all HTCs of pure refrigerants. Thus developed correlation showed an excellent agreement with all experimental data showing a mean deviation of 5.5%.

Abstract:
The discovery of high temperature superconductivity (HTS) has created the opportunity for major extensions of current electron device applications of superconductivity, including opening up the possibility of integration of superconductivity with semiconductor devices. However, due to the difficult nature of the presently known HTS materials, the actual realization of this opportunity faces severe challenges. In this talk I will describe recent advances in, and current prospects for, the production of high quality, well-oriented HTS films with acceptable superconducting properties on technologically useful substrates, both insulating and semiconducting. Emphasis will be given to the discussion of new and improved techniques for the lower temperature growth and in-situ formation of the superconducting phase. The stability of current HTS materials will be discussed. I will also report on successful techniques for the formation of very low resistance contacts to HTS films and for the patterning of epitaxial films to micrometer, and possibly submicrometer, dimensions. The most recent results on the microwave and millimeter wave surface losses of high quality HTS material will be presented, as well as results on picosecond pulse propagation experiments on transmission lines formed from epitaxial HTS films.

Abstract:
Abstract Novel high temperature (≥ 700°C) Heat Transfer Medias (HTMs, e.g., molten salts) and corrosion-resistant Containment Materials (CMs, e.g., metal alloys or ceramics) are necessary for concentrated solar power (CSP) given the emphasis on higher temperatures and high cycle efficiency in the 3rd generation CSP (Gen3 CSP) technologies. In early 2019, we sent out an online survey to the Gen3 CSP community to fully assess the communal needs for thermophysical properties measurements of which HTMs and CMs, and what temperature range and other testing environments would be ideal for those materials. Based on the recorded responses, seven unique HTMs and twenty-six unique CMs were identified. Since then the list has been constantly updated, following our interactions and inputs from the Gen3 CSP community, with some new materials substituting their older counterparts. Currently, there are total of ten unique HTMs and twenty-nine unique CMs that are under consideration by the Gen3 CSP community. By analyzing the available body of research to date and combining it with our survey data from within the Gen3 CSP community, this paper presents trends of what people in the CSP world are thinking regarding materials worth investigating and suggests which thermophysical property measurements are critical to advance high-temperature CSP systems.
