Schafer, Karl. Hume on Practical Reason. Edited by Paul Russell. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199742844.013.21.

Full text
Abstract:
Hume’s views about practical reason are often characterized in terms of his “double Humeanism”— i.e. the conjunction of the Humean Theory of Motivation (HTM) and the Humean Theory of Reasons (HTR). But Hume actually endorsed neither the HTM nor the HTR. Instead, the purpose of his discussion of these issues was to attack certain claims about the role of the faculty of reason in the practical domain. As such, Hume’s discussion is part of a far more radical philosophical project than anything in contemporary “Humeanism”: a wholesale assault on the idea that the faculty of reason has any special normative authority in either the theoretical or practical sphere. In this way, it is only by resisting the attribution of the HTM and HTR to Hume that we can see just how deep Hume’s antirationalism extends.

Abstract:
This chapter explains how incorporating podcasts and multimedia sources (audio and TV clips, social-media messages, etc.) into a History of English course can lead not only to the greatest student engagement but also to a significantly richer learning experience. This chapter will reflect upon both what these materials are and why they should be so meaningful for students, as well as how these materials are also satisfying and engaging to the scholar/teacher. Specific examples of podcasts, YouTube videos, and Internet memes are mentioned, along with relevant class discussion prompts or out-of-class assignments.

Full text
Abstract:
“Emergence” is the key term from the study of complex systems, a new science currently useful in physics, genetics, evolutionary biology, and economics, but also a perfect fit for the humanities. The science of complexity describes how massive numbers of random interactions can give rise to order, regularities that “emerge” from the interactions without specific causes. This chapter will present an argument for designing History of English Language (HEL) courses that bear “emergence” in mind, offering as an option the story of the language centered on the continual emergence and re-emergence of lexical, phonological, and grammatical forms of English out of the interaction of its speakers and the contingencies of their history.

Full text
Abstract:
The human T cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is a retrovirus that infects about 20 million individuals worldwide. Its typical neurological presentation is of a chronic, slowly progressive myelopathy named “HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis” (HAM/TSP). HAM/TSP emerges as the tip of the iceberg among numerous other neurological clinical syndromes caused by this virus, such as inflammatory myopathies, polyneuropathies, ALS-like syndromes, dysautonomia, etc. HAM/TSP designates a spastic paraparesis with neurogenic bladder, and minor sensory signs. Pathologically, HAM/TSP is characterized initially by perivascular lymphocytic cuffing and mild parenchymal mononuclear infiltrates affecting mainly the thoracic spinal cord. This is followed by gliosis and scarring in later stages. The neuropathogenesis of HTLV-1 is still poorly understood but is apparently immune mediated. The therapy of TSP/HAM remains basically symptomatic.

Abstract:
Working with manuscript facsimiles is one way of making Old and Middle English viscerally real to students studying the History of the English Language (HEL). Manuscripts ground the language in physical objects that were created, handled, and read by actual people. Edited texts remain vital but nonetheless insufficient for this purpose because they are abstracted from their original context and overlaid with editorial aids. Digital facsimiles in particular allow students to engage with old, alien forms of the English language through the familiarity of a screen. This chapter explores the uses of digital facsimiles in the HEL classroom and assignments.

Wiklund, Olov, and Jan Borén. Pathogenesis of atherosclerosis: lipid metabolism. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198755777.003.0011.

Full text
Abstract:
Lipids are carried in plasma as microparticles, lipoproteins, composed of a core of hydrophobic lipids and a surface of amphipathic lipids. In addition, the particles carry proteins (i.e. apolipoproteins). The proteins have key functions in the metabolism as receptor ligands, enzymes or activators. Lipoproteins are classified based on density into: chylomicrons, VLDL, IDL, LDL, and HDL. Retention of apoB-containing lipoproteins (LDL, IDL, and VLDL) in the arterial intima is the initiating event in the development of atherosclerosis. Retention is mediated by binding of apoB to structural proteoglycans in the intima. Increased plasma concentration of apoB-containing lipoproteins is the main risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD) and the causative role of LDL has been demonstrated in several studies. Lp(a) is a subclass of LDL and elevated Lp(a) is an independent risk-factor, primarily genetically mediated. Genetic data support that high Lp(a) causes atherosclerosis. Elevated triglycerides in plasma are associated with increased risk for CVD. Whether triglycerides directly induce atherogenesis is still unclear, but current data strongly support that remnant particles from triglyceride-rich lipoproteins are causal. HDL are lipoproteins that have been considered to be important for reversed cholesterol transport. Low HDL is a strong risk-factor for CVD. However, the causative role of HDL is debated and intervention studies to raise HDL have not been successful. Reduction of LDL is the main target for prevention and treatment, using drugs that inhibit the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, i.e. statins. Other drugs for LDL reduction and to modify other lipoproteins may further reduce risk, and new therapeutic targets are explored.

Abstract:
Students taking the History of the English Language (HEL) may find old texts in strange writing or phonological charts less engaging than the language’s sounds. This chapter explains the pedagogical value of the “verbal music” of the English language at various periods. With particular attention to the language’s rhythms, the author argues for the value of oral performances to the “auditory imagination” that can be developed in a HEL classroom. Historical reconstructions of the language’s earlier sounds may not be perfect. But as a pedagogical device, performances of earlier Englishes convey a fact about language that charts and diagrams do not: its use by living speakers.

Full text
Abstract:
Lecithin cholesterol ester transferase (LCAT) is the sole enzyme in the circulation that mediates the esterification of free cholesterol (FC) to cholesterol ester (CE) in lipoproteins. Mutations in the LCAT gene result in one of two clinical syndromes: complete LCAT deficiency syndrome, and “fish eye disease.” The former is characterized by a broad spectrum of clinical features, including profound high-density lipoprotein (HDL) deficiency, hypertriglyceridemia, corneal opacities, anemia, neuropathies, and nephropathy. In contrast, fish eye disease patients develop severe HDL deficiency and severe corneal opacities, but the nervous system and kidneys are typically unaffected. Whether there is a predisposition to accelerated coronary heart disease with LCAT deficiency remains controversial. Currently, severe corneal opacities may be treated with corneal transplant. Only anecdotal evidence is available for preventive measures of progressive renal complications. LCAT replacement therapies are under investigation.

Abstract:
Tyrosinemia type 1 (HT-1) is a rare metabolic disorder affecting degradation pathways of the amino acid tyrosine. HT-1 presents with liver, kidney and/or bone disease and can cause acute porphyria attacks. Biochemical diagnosis is made by measuring raised plasma tyrosine and detection of succinylacetone in urine. Long-term management with diet and nitisinone leads to excellent short term results, but since long term effects are largely unknown, life-long treatment and follow-up for liver malignancy, bone disease and kidney disease seem necessary. HT-1 is treatable by liver transplantation.

Abstract:
Huntington’s disease (HD) is a rare inherited neurologic disorder due to a single mutational mechanism in a large gene (HTT). The mutation is an abnormal CAG repeat expansion, which is translated to a polyglutamine stretch in the huntingtin protein. The growing field of repeat expansion disorders benefits greatly from the lessons learned from the role of the CAG repeat expansion in HD and its resulting phenotype–genotype correlations. The molecular diagnosis can be difficult, and there are some pitfalls for accurate sizing of the CAG repeat, especially in juvenile HD and for intermediate alleles. Correlation between CAG length and age of onset accounts for up to 72% of the variance in different populations, but the search for genes modifying age of onset or progression of HD is still ongoing.

Abstract:
This chapter looks at Chester Himes' and Hal Bennett's fictional representations of BDSM (bondage, domination, sadism, and masochism) and sex work in order to theorize other articulations of masculinity in the domestic sphere. Funk proposes a blend of parody, irony, communal intimacy, and temporal violence to critique masculine privilege and eroticize male submission that would embrace unpatriarchal traditions of family. The chapter demonstrates how black public spheres too reliant on nostalgia and respectability can be reinvented using cultural legacies of transaesthetics. Eliminating gender hierarchies and sexual colonialism in black communities hinges on black men and women accepting systems of knowledge that would teach them that forgoing masculine privilege and rethinking the feminine is not only morally and ethically right, but also that there is pleasure in it if everyone involved is willing to submit to funk's emphasis on The One.

Abstract:
By the early 1970s, Broadway music would be branded “middle of the road,” but the expressway of popular music left little, if any, room for the show music for an earlier or current generation. Various new teams and new songwriters attempted a cross-generational sound, a way of bringing rock-infused scores to Broadway: Burt Bacharach and Hal David, John Barry, Stephen Schwartz, and Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Not all of their experiments were successful—either on the pop charts or on stage. Stephen Sondheim emerged as the preeminent composer/lyricist of his generation and, in the midst of commercial failure within the world of cast albums, Sondheim emerged with a hit song that eventually became a pop standard in an increasingly obstreperous time: “Send in the Clowns,” introduced as a crossover single by Frank Sinatra.

Abstract:
This chapter considers Keith Allen’s heroic primitivism and Derek Brown’s layering view. Both views hold that our experience of a color can vary with perspective, without that variation entailing any error or illusion. But Allen rejects one of the core theses of the hybrid view; he takes the existence of widespread agreement about rough objective colors to suggest that disagreements about precise color appearances reflect a lack of precision in our visual systems, rather than the absence of a precise fact of the matter. That is, he seems to hold that there is always a precise and determinate fact of the matter regarding the objective colors of objects. And Brown takes a similar view, holding that the colors of opaque surfaces can be located, precisely, in HSL space or something similar. The chapter argues that this determinacy assumption leads to problems.

Grow, Nathaniel. The Federal League Strikes Back. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252038198.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the legal battle between the Federal League and organized baseball during the period June 1914–December 1914. Following its loss in the Chief Johnson case, the Federal League continued to recruit players from the big leagues, starting with outfielder Armando Marsans of the Cincinnati Reds. Marsans, who was signed by the St. Louis Federals, was followed by New York Yankees pitcher Al Schulz and Chicago White Sox first baseman Hal Chase, both of whom defected to the Buffalo Federals. The Chicago Federals were able to secure pitcher Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators, but Johnson repudiated his contract with them and returned to Washington. The Federals vowed to pursue legal action to enforce Johnson's contract with the ChiFeds. This chapter discusses the litigation involving the Federal League and the major leagues, its impact on both parties, and the reactions of the baseball press and fans to the legal dispute.

Full text
Abstract:
Leukemias are a diverse group of acute and chronic haematological malignancies, that account for 2% to 3% of cancers globally. Recent advances in molecular biology and therapy have transformed the landscape for several leukemia subtypes changing some, but by no means all, from rapidly fatal diseases to treatable conditions with a good prognosis. In general, however, this progress has not been matched by new aetiological insights. Albeit accounting for a relatively small proportion, genetic predisposition syndromes such as neurofibromatosis, Li-Fraumeni and Trisomy 21, have the biggest impact in children and young adults. At older ages, established chemical, physical and biological risk factors, which explain only a small proportion of the total disease burden, include chemotherapy for a preceding cancer, ionizing radiation, and the viral infections human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) which causes the rare adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) which is associated with an increased risk of acute lymphoid leukaemias. Workplace exposures to potential carcinogens such as benzene, butadiene, and styrene have also been linked to increased risk of leukemia.

Locke, Joseph. Making the Bible Belt. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780190216283.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
By reconstructing the religious crusade to achieve prohibition in Texas, Making the Bible Belt reveals how southern religious leaders overcame long-standing anticlerical traditions and built a powerful political movement that injected religion irreversibly into public life. H.L. Mencken coined the term “Bible Belt” in the 1920s to capture the peculiar alliance of religion and public life in the American South, but the reality he described was only the closing chapter of a long historical process. Through the politics of prohibition, and in the face of bitter resistance, a complex but shared commitment to expanding the power and scope of religion transformed southern evangelicals’ inward-looking restraints into an aggressive, self-assertive, and unapologetic political activism. Early defeats forced prohibitionist clergy to recast their campaign as a broader effort that churned notions of history, race, gender, and religion into a moral crusade that elevated ambitious leaders such as the pugnacious fundamentalist J. Frank Norris and US senator Morris Sheppard, the “Father of National Prohibition,” into national figures. By exploring the controversies surrounding the religious support of prohibition in Texas, Making the Bible Belt reconstructs the purposeful, decades-long campaign to politicize southern religion, hints at the historical origins of the religious right, and explores a compelling and transformative moment in American history.

Abstract:
Before 1940, East Asia and the Pacific were contested regions. The United States vied with the Empire of Japan for the strategic domination of the Pacific Basin. To a lesser degree, the formerly hegemonic colonial powers of Britain, France, and the Netherlands still controlled portions of the region. At the same time, subjugated peoples in East Asia and Southeast Asia struggled to throw off colonialism. By the late 1930s, the competition exploded into armed conflict. Japan looked to be the early victor, but by 1945 the United States established itself as the hegemonic power in the Pacific Basin. New rivals, however, arose in the form of Communist and liberation movements on the Asian continent. In War in the American Pacific and East Asia, 1941–1972, editor Hal Friedman brings together nine essays that explore aspects of the Pacific War that remain understudied or, in some cases, entirely unexamined. Chapters present traditional subjects of the conflict in new ways, with essays on interservice rivalry and military advising, as well as unique topics new to military history, particularly the investigations of strategic communications, military public relations, institutional cultures of elite forces, foodways, and the military’s interaction with the press. Together, these essays firmly establish the Pacific War as the pivotal point in the twentieth century in the Pacific Basin.
