Abstract:
Heroic fantasy is a literary genre, little known in France but highly appreciated in the United States. This genre, which belongs to "romance", as traditionally opposed to "novel", tells marvelous adventures located in imaginary worlds. Invented at the end of the last century by welshman William Morris, a great reader of sagas, it numbers among its inspired creators Lord Dunsany, E. R. Eddison, J. B. Cabell, Mervyn Peake and J. R. R. Tolkien. A faithful forrespondent of H. P. Lovecraft, who influenced him, the self-taught texan Robert E. Howard (1906-1936), while adapting heroic fantasy for the cheap adventure magazines called Pulps, brought to the genre the violence and primitivism of the West, as well as of his own irish heritage. The main Pulp for which he wrote was Weird Tales, where appeared his heroes, Solomon Kane, King Kull, Bran Mak Morn, and the famous Conan the Barbarian, later featured in comic strips and movies. On the tracks of Mowgli, of Tarzan, and of Jack London's heroes, Conan renewed with a nietzschean zest the western myth of the noble savage, at a time when America seemed to be forgetting its values. Mythical, individualistic, cyclical, body-oriented, heroic fantasy differs from science fiction, which is historical, group, progress and mind-oriented, and for which it is occasionally mistaken. The syncretic and tormented genius of Howard, a minor but gift

Annis, J. Lee. "Howard H. Baker, Jr., a public biography." Virtual Press, 1985. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/441105.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation provides a narrative analysis of the political career of former Senate Majority Leader Howard H. Baker, Jr. Based principally upon findings from interviews, public papers, newspapers, and other primary sources, the study includes accounts of Mr. Baker's bids for Senate Republican Leader in 1969, 1971, and 1977, his campaign for the Presidency in 1980, and his failure to secure the nods for the position of Vice President in 1968, 1973, 1974, and 1976. Its focus, however, lies upon his legislative work and his role in the development of a statewide two-party system in his native Tennessee. It can be said without question that Baker defined the overriding issue of all Watergate investigations with his query, "What did the President know and when did he know it?" Equally evident from this treatise is Baker's role as the de facto architect of the coalition which emerged in the mid 1960s to challenge Democratic hegemony at the state level in Tennessee. With well-reasoned appeals to those groups disenchanted with those inBaker won a landslide victory in 1966 and even larger margins in 1972 and 1978. In the meantime, several younger Tennessee Republicans captured other onetime Democratic seats using much the same strategy.Much of Baker's success at the polls sprang from the perception that his outlook coincided sharply with the moderately conservative weltanschuung predominant within his constituency. Unlike many to his right, however, Baker believed his party could not be merely naysayers, but had a duty to offer alternatives to Democratic proposals for the alleviation of societal problems. Upon becoming Leader, he, following the pattern of Robert Taft, rallied his caucuses behind solutions utilizing the free-market approach. Well established by this time was his reputation as a problem-solver and a conciliator. Prior to 1977, he had played integral roles in the development of the Fair Housing Act, revenue sharing, the monumental antipollution bills of the early 1970s, the opening of the highway trust fund to mass transit programs, and legislation accelerating the reapportionment of state legislatures. Thereafter, he played equally significant, and sometimes determinative parts in the approval of the Panama Canal Treaties, the sale of jets to Saudi Arabia and Egypt, the creation of the Department of Education, the Reagan economic program, the lifting of the arms embargo on Turkey, and the designation of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as a federal holiday. Only Hubert Humphrey, Henry Jackson, and Russell Long among the Democrats with whom he served has as broad a scope of accomplishment. Within his own caucus, his only equal was Everett Dirksen, his father-in-law.

Abstract:

Boon, Richard Peter. "Howard Brenton : a critical study of the plays." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 1987. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/14809/.

Full text
Abstract:
The subject of this thesis is the plays of Howard Brenton, published and unpublished, from 1965 to 1973. The period is identified as the writer's "apprenticeship". An Introduction provides a short biography of the writer's early life and accounts of his first, now suppressed, works for the stage. Chapter One examines his involvement with the Fringe theatre of the late nineteen-sixties. The short plays produced for the Brighton Combination and Bradford University are considered in the light of how style and form evolved largely out of practical circumstances. Chapter Two describes the impact of contemporary political unrest on Brenton's attitude to his work. The plays Revenge and Christie in Love are discussed with reference to their . - production by the Royal Court Theatre and by Portable Theatre, which are identified as key agencies in furthering the writer's career. Chapter Three deals with more Fringe work, charting the playwright's growing doubts about the efficacy of such work, and his increasing assimilation of new political thought. In Chapter Four, Brenton's increasing desire to write for the bigger stages and audiences of the established theatre is discussed. The chapter concentrates heavily though by no means exclusively on Hitler Dances as both a summary of the Fringe work and the progenitor of the later, full-scale, "epic" plays. Chapter Five is concerned with Magnificence as the first of those plays and the first to be produced on the main stage of a mainstream London theatre. Particular reference is made to its troubled production history.

In this work we intend to study Propositional Logic as “proj ection” of two different correspondences that have it as common part. The fi rst one establishes a logical -algebraic bridge, the Lindenbaum-Tarski, and the second one a logical-operational bridge, the Curry-Howard isomorphism. We focus our attention on the two propositional paradigms which historically motivated these correspondences: Classical Propositional Logic and Intuitionistic Propositional Logic, respectively. We introduce three logical calculi and two semantics for both paradigms, as well as the operational calculus by excellence – the Lambda Calculus. Borrowing the notion of signature from Universal Algebra, we uniformize the treatment given to the three theories under study. As an example of the established correspondences’ range, we exhibit two consequences for Classical and Intuitionistic Propositional Logic given via Lindenbaum-Tarski and Curry-Howard: Gli venko’s Theorem and the consistency of both Logics, respectively. Finally, we propose a broader explanation for the “translation” of the lambda reductions, via Curry-Howard, as proof normalization where the Deduction Metatheorem occurs immediately followed by the Detachment Metatheorem. Gentzen’s famous Hauptsatz results as a particular case. We also suggest as future development a first order generalization of the Lambda Calculus which follows very closely its traditional treatment.

Khamphommala, Vanasay. Thesis, Paris 4, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010PA040190.

Full text
Abstract:
From his earliest efforts to his latest and most accomplished plays, Howard Barker has often confronted Shakespeare, be it with his irreverent parody of Henry V in Henry V in Two Parts (1971) or with his variations on Hamlet in Gertrude – The Cry (2002). These rewritings, along with some others (notably Seven Lears in 1989) have prompted many, both in the media and in academia, to call him, as Sarah Kane allegedly did, “the Shakespeare of our age”. In spite of a number of common features, their works do however appear as radically different, if only because of Barker’s marginal status within the landscape of contemporary English drama. If Shakespeare manifests himself in Barker’s work, it will therefore be in an altered and possibly unrecognizable form, in other words as a spectre. Why is it that Barker’s work has been so insistently compared to that of Shakespeare? What does this comparison reveal both about critical practice and about the aesthetics of Barker’s theatre? In order to answer these questions, this dissertation first examines the overall design of Barker’s work and the way in which it endeavours to place the figure of the ghost, as an embodiment of doubt, at its core. It then moves on to consider the criteria that have been invoked to draw a parallel between both playwrights, especially their focus on history and poetic writing as the basis of drama, to show how Shakespeare is always paradoxically summoned as a lure, an empty model that both suggests and contradicts modes of interpretation. In doing so, it strives to bring out not the traits shared by both playwrights but Barker’s effort to thwart the haunting and overwhelming presence of Shakespeare by giving birth to his own original voice

Abstract:
This thesis argues for the centrality of the Howard women to their family's political fortunes by exploring key dynastic episodes, themes, and events of Henry VIII's reign from a new female perspective. The Howards were England's premier aristocratic dynasty during this period. However, existing narratives have prioritised the careers of the Howard men, notably the two Dukes of Norfolk and the Earl of Surrey. Here, the family's women are foregrounded. They are not considered in isolation, but discussed alongside their male relations in order to create a fuller, more complex dynastic picture than currently exists. Themes of rebellion, dynastic identity, matriarchy, patronage, treason and religion are woven through events of familial and national importance, allowing new conclusions to be drawn regarding the Howard women and the Howard narrative itself; the way that aristocratic dynasties operated; the activities of women within the political sphere; and the relationship between this family and the Henrician state. This thesis draws its conclusions from new archival research into the activities of five Howard women: Agnes Tylney (c. 1477-1545) and Elizabeth Stafford (c. 1497-1558), the wives of the 2nd and 3rd Dukes of Norfolk respectively; Agnes' daughters Anne, Countess of Oxford (c. 1498-1558) and Katherine, Countess of Bridgwater (d. 1554); and Elizabeth's daughter Mary, Duchess of Richmond (c. 1519-1557). These five women cover three generations and two concurrent branches of the Howard family across the entirety of Henry's reign. The thesis differs from traditional gender studies by focusing on women all from one family rather than those of particular court status or geographical location, as this facilitates exploration of the relationship between kinship networks and politics. Thus it also builds on recent scholarship emphasising the role of the family in early modern politics, and reveals the Howard women as important actors on a public, political stage.

Abstract:

Shepherd, Peter. "John Howard Shakespeare and the English Baptists, 1898-1924." Thesis, Durham University, 1999. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/4513/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Rev. John Howard Shakespeare was General Secretary of the Baptist Union of Great Britain and Ireland from 1898 until his resignation on the grounds of ill health in 1924. This thesis describes and evaluates changes in the Baptist denomination in England during that period, and assesses the significance of Shakespeare’s contribution. Following summaries of the history of Baptist ecclesiology and Shakespeare’s personal background, the main areas of denominational reform are described. The first of these is the strengthening of the Baptist Union and the expansion of its influence, which was the major feature of the period up to about 1908. This presented a challenge to the Baptists' traditional congregational church polity. The second is the changing approach to the recognition and support of Baptist ministers within the denomination, culminating in the 1916 Baptist Union Ministerial Settlement and Sustentation Scheme. The third is Shakespeare's search for church unity, both within Nonconformity and between Nonconformists and the Church of England, which dominated the post-war period. The formation of the Federal Council of the Evangelical Free Churches, of which Shakespeare was the first Moderator, in 1919, and conversations following the 1920 Lambeth Appeal, were central elements of this search. It had significant implications for Baptist church polity. Shakespeare's approach to the question of women in the ministry, and the circumstances surrounding his resignation, are also described. A final chapter discusses Shakespeare's legacy for Baptists. The institutions he created have played an important part in the subsequent history of Baptists and Nonconformity in general. However, they failed to achieve his objective of stemming numerical decline. They also exacerbated tensions in Baptist church polity between the centralisation of denominational life and Congregationalism. These tensions have been a major factor in Baptist church life throughout the present century.

Pitts, James Drake. "Principalities and powers : revising John Howard Yoder's sociological theology." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/9798.

Full text
Abstract:
Evaluations of John Howard Yoder’s legacy have proliferated since his death in 1997. Although there is much disagreement, a broad consensus is forming that his theology was, on the one hand, focused on the social and political meaning of the New Testament accounts of Jesus Christ and, on the other hand, sociologically reductive, hermeneutically tendentious, and ecclesiologically ambiguous. This thesis proposes a revision of Yoder’s theology that maintains its broadly sociological emphasis but corrects for its apparent problems. In specific, adjustments are made to his social theory to open it to spiritual reality, to hone its analytical approach, and to clarify its political import. To do so his preferred framework for social criticism, the theology of the principalities and powers, is examined in the context of his wider work and its critics, and then synthesized with concepts from Pierre Bourdieu’s influential reflexive sociology. Yoder maintains that the powers, understood as social structures, are part of God’s good creation, fallen, and now being redeemed through their subjection to the risen Lord Christ. Bourdieu’s fundamental sociological concepts--habitus, capital, and field--enable an interpretation of the powers as dynamically constituted by their relations to the triune God and to personal dispositions. His treatment of social reproduction and freedom furthermore facilitate a construal of choice as a divinely gifted, sociologically mediated freedom for obedience to God. The sinful restriction of this freedom is read in light of Bourdieu’s concept of symbolic violence, which recognizes the ambiguity of violence without thereby identifying any form of killing as nonviolent. Violence and other phenomena can be investigated by a reflexive, dialogical, and empirically rigorous comparison with the life of Christ. The church’s spiritual participation in the redemption of the violent powers is conceptualized in Bourdieusian terms as a critical legitimation of other political and cultural fields made possible through autonomy from those fields. Christian social distinctiveness moreover has universal meaning because it is oriented towards the worship of God and so radically welcoming of others; and this sociological universality is distinctive because it is the result of a particular history of social struggles with and for God. These revisions to Yoder’s theology of the principalities and powers produce a sociological theology that is material and spiritual, critical and dialogical, and particular and universal. By incorporating these revisions, Yoder’s work can continue to support those who seek peace in a world riven by violence.

Abstract:
The aim of this research is to investigate the function and the importance of the myth in the work of Howard Phillips Lovecraft, known as one of the most important writers of modern fantastic literature, mainly for his most important and influential group of narratives, a set of a dozen interconnected stories known as \"The Cthulhu Cycle\". This cycle is the subject of our work, which intends to demonstrate how the application of a cosmogonic myth (one that narrates the origin and ordering of the cosmos) as the basis to this set of narratives is an essential element for a radical critique, albeit nihilist and reactionary, to a world ruled by technical rationality. Our final purpose is to reveal the meaning of Lovecraft´s masterwork and its value as an intense and dialectical critique to the urban and industrial modern world.

Abstract:
The aesthetics of the Hollywood film director Howard Winchester Hawks (1896-1977) is structured by a conceiving of the world based on the immanent interaction between two (apparently paradoxical) parameters : a method, the repetition; a tool, the withdrawal. According to the essence of the repetition, the generating of the difference, the Hawksian repetition will not be confused with the duplicating reiteration, but it founds an ontology of the fading by a deducting addition. "To be" is "to be repeated", that is to say re-asserted in its evanescing. Therefore, a threefold withdrawal, constituent of the humanity of human being questioned by the artist in a critical movement toward the American ideology (especially in the Emersonian tradition), crosses the Hawksian world : out of nature, out of society, out of myself. The cinema is then, on this occasion, re-examined by the light of its capacity, trough the intervention of the human vector, to lead us to the revelation of the being

Burns, Adam David. "Imperial vision : William Howard Taft and the Philippines, 1900-1921." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/4506.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to establish William H. Taft’s influence over the U.S. experiment with empire in the Philippines. It shows how a politician who is often characterised as a loyal servant of Theodore Roosevelt, at least before 1909, was in fact a key driver of policy decisions. Taft’s views of empire may have been built on the ideas of others, but his own synthesis of these ideas and the career path he followed during this period single him out as one of the most influential figures in U.S.-Philippine relations. Taft saw the Philippine relationship as a long-term prospect and foresaw a future where the islands would eventually become a dominion of a United States, like the relationship between Great Britain and Canada. This, it is argued here, was Taft’s distinct “imperial vision.” This thesis reassesses the role of Taft in the American imperial experiment in the Philippines between the years 1900 and 1921. During this period Taft was the highest-profile figure arguing consistently for a permanent imperial relationship with the Philippine Islands. Various historians have covered Philippine affairs during this period, but none has made such a detailed analysis of Taft as a leader in guiding Philippine policy toward retention. Taft held a number of high-level roles during the period 1900-1913 – when the Republican Party continuously controlled Philippine policy – which allowed him to maintain a permanent influence over the nature of U.S.-Philippine relations. After this period Taft had less direct influence, but utilised his experience, reputation and contacts to speak out against the Democratic Party’s policy for the islands and became the figurehead of a campaign to retain the Philippines.

Abstract:

Montaclair, Florent. "Fantastique et anticipation chez Jules Verne et Howard Phillip Lovecraft." Paris 4, 1995. http://www.theses.fr/1995PA040097.

Abstract:
Jules Verne (1828-1905), the French writer, and Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937), the American writer, have been considered, in their respective countries, as creators of a new literary genre - science fiction. The works of both the authors are linked to the problematic of inserting modernity, and the knowledge which comes with it, in fiction. The aim of this research is to analyze what is common to both writers, how their work is innovative and whether their work becomes - or not - the prolongation of the literary movements which triumphed in their century. The rejection of a fantastic literary genre is inscribed within the movement which determines their work and forms an aspect which will be examined in depth. By using three points of comparison (namely proxemics, characteristics of the supernatural, and the narrator's role in the text), the formal and historical perspective of this research tries to study Lovecraft and Verne in their own century so as to bring out their uniqueness within the literary context of the period

Abstract:
This study explores the fiction of Robert E. Howard, whose entire body of work was published in the American pulp magazines of the 1920s and 1930s, and who has since been credited as the creator of « sword and sorcery », a subgenre of fantasy fiction often criticized due to its lack of sophistication. While the consensus is that Howard defined the American form of modern fantasy, we call into question what is seen as the purely escapist nature of his tales and challenge the notion that his fiction is representative of the subgenre he is considered to have initiated. At the core of our approach is the theory that Howard’s fiction is escapist only in the sense that it avoids writing about a traumatic episode dating from the author’s childhood. Focusing at first on apparently inconsequential details such as the characters’ names or the color of their eyes, the present work identifies the literary traces and manifestations of the trauma we postulate, to reveal an elaborate, if hidden, architecture that informs the entire body of his fiction. This, in turn, offers new perspectives on Howard’s contribution to American fantasy and leads us to conclude that the very form of the genre proceeds from trauma

Southerland, William Jackson. "Negotiating the Delta: Dr. T.R.M. Howard in Mound Bayou, Mississippi." Scholar Commons, 2016. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/6589.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper examines the racially segregationist practices and the integrationist, inclusionist formation of African American leader Dr. T.R.M. Howard during his tenure as a surgeon and entrepreneur in the all-black Mississippi Delta community of Mound Bayou, 1942-1956. The paper analytically investigates the careful racial negotiations that were required of Howard as he advanced a separatist but egalitarian economic and social plan for Delta blacks. This separatist plan, it is argued, is grounded in the racial pragmatism of the Seventh-day Adventist church which provided a bibliocentric, Tuskegee-inspired education to Howard from youth through medical school and beyond. Howard’s adherence to Adventist racial codes provided him with unique tools to establish financial strength and social cachet whereby he could in time shift to a more inclusionist, desegregationist focus. Howard’s separatist racial pragmatism is demonstrated in his creation of an economic power base in the 1940s. The 1950s shift to an inclusive position appears principally in three developments in Howard’s Mound Bayou career: the founding of the Regional Council for Negro Leadership, his activism after the Brown v. Board of Education decision, and his involvement in the trial of Emmett Till’s killers. Evidence is given from a number of primary sources, including both regional and national newspapers and the collected papers of Mississippi House Speaker Walter Sillers. The thesis argues that Howard’s pragmatism was both informed by Adventist racial pragmatism and provided the base whereby he could challenge Jim Crow directly; the pattern is accepting and enhancing racial segregation for the purpose of developing the means to work toward a racially inclusive, integrationist ideal. This pattern appears in Adventist evangelist practice, and it appears, with striking resemblance, in Howard’s work in Mound Bayou.

Abstract:
In the last years the Theory of the Multiple Intelligences developed by Howard Gardner has had a tremendous impact in elementary and secondary classrooms in the United States. Gardner(1983) defines intelligence as the ability to solve a problem or fashion a product that is valued in one or more cultural settings. His definition expands our understanding of "intelligence" beyond the familiar linguistic and Logical-mathematical intelligences, to include the spatial, musical,bodily-kinesthetic, naturalist. interpersonal, and intrapersonal intelligences. This new wayof conceptualizing human intelligence has profound implications for educators whose task needs to include the identification and nourishment of the different talents brought by al students.
