Abstract:
Different industries tend to use different sales techniques. If you're selling high-end financial products to giant corporations you'll need to approach your prospects in an entirely different way from someone who sells books at a neighborhood bookstore. Still, the fundamental rules of how to sell remain the same regardless of your product type and customer base.

Hegemann, Annika, Angela Kunoth, Kristina Rupp, and Caren Sureth-Sloane. "Hold or sell? How capital gains taxation affects holding decisions." WU Vienna University of Economics and Business, Universität Wien, 2015. http://epub.wu.ac.at/4929/1/SSRN%2Did2563524.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Investments with exit flexibility require decisions regarding both the investment and holding period. Because selling an investment often leads to taxable capital gains, which crucially depend on the duration of an investment, we investigate the impact of capital gains taxation on exit timing under different tax systems. We observed that capital gains taxation delays exit decisions but loses its decision relevance for very long holdings. Often the optimal exit time, which indicates the maximal present value of future cashflows, cannot be determined analytically. However, we identify the breakeven exit time that guarantees present values exceeding those of an immediate sale. While, after-taxes, an immediate sale is often optimal, long holding periods might also be attractive for investors depending on the degree of income and corporate tax integration. A classic corporate tax system often indicates holdings over more than 100 periods. By contrast, a shareholder relief system indicates the earliest breakeven exit time and thus the highest level of exit timing flexibility. Surprisingly, high retention rates are likely to accelerate sales under a classic corporate system. Additionally, the worst exit time, which should be avoided by investors, differs tremendously across tax systems. For an integrated tax system with full imputation, the worst time is reached earlier than under partial or non-integrated systems. These results could help to predict investors' behavior regarding changes in capital gains taxation and thus are of interest for both investors and tax policymakers. Furthermore, the results emphasize the need to control for the underlying tax system in cross-country empirical studies. (authors' abstract)

Ramalho, Maria Rita Pinto Coelho de Magalhães. "How to sell successfully a perfume in the non-selective market?" Master's thesis, NSBE - UNL, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/9637.

Full text
Abstract:
A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and Economics
This document presents a market research on the positioning of perfumes in the non selective market. This project’s main goal had been to analyze the challenge of “successfully selling a perfume in the non-selective market” in order to propose potential solutions. To address this marketing problem, an exploratory research had been conducted (20 In Depth interviews) along with four semi-structured interviews with market experts to consolidate the consumers’ outputs. Although this research had confirmed a high complexity behind consumers’ attitudes towards a perfume, we believe there are great opportunities in the non-selective perfumery. As a consequence, we recommend a further study on some of the hypothesis build up throughout this research: on other products to “get perfumed”; on the already strong mass market brand’s potential extensions; on the establishment of another way of talking about the perfume and on the replacement of the myth with an absolutely unique idea.

Lane, Kristen Elizabeth. "Green Think: How to Sell Sustainability Marketing, Relativity, and Environmental Sustainability." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/579048.

Full text
Abstract:
This study utilizes the relativity theory, from behavioral economics, to evaluate impact of a ‘decoy' product offering in a set of product choices on consumer evaluation and purchase intention of eco-friendly products. Product categories tested include multipurpose cleaners (low involvement decision), denim jeans (medium involvement), and vehicles (high involvement). 310 respondents were tested. The findings of this research indicate that the addition of a less-desirable "decoy" product offering has a positive effect on the overall evaluation and purchase intention of eco-friendly goods. Further, this research is unique in finding that the addition of a less-desirable "decoy" product offering also has a positive effect on certain evaluation components of equivalent-quality competitor products. This research provides a foundation to better market sustainably-produced goods at point-of-purchase displays (both virtual and physical), indicating that marketers can influence and increase consumer purchase of eco-friendly goods. Theoretically, this is a "triple bottom line" win: good for businesses (lower costs), consumers (safer products), and the environment (less waste and impact).

Tan, Zhiyuan. "Agents of transparency : how sell-side financial analysts make corporate governance visible." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2010. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/2376/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the phenomenon of sell-side financial analysts (analysts hereafter) "doing" corporate governance. The term "doing" is used in the current study to designate the various ways in which some analysts in the US and the UK, across the past decade or so, have made corporate governance visible. The thesis examines how this has occurred, and the mechanisms and devices that have made it possible. Analysts, it is suggested, can be viewed as "agents of transparency", in so far as they have taken the evaluation of companies beyond the financials, to include corporate governance issues. The thesis focuses primarily on the corporate governance reports produced by analysts, the official documents issued by various organisations and institutions, selected financial and business newspapers and magazines, together with other documents such as textbooks of corporate governance, as well as academic and practioner publications on corporate governance. Through an examination of these materials, the thesis investigates the pre-conditions that made possible the appearance and development of the corporate governance work pursued by analysts in the early twenty-first century. It examines the evaluations performed by analysts of the corporate governance procedures adopted by companies. In particular, it focuses on the ways in which analysts benchmarked the corporate governance procedures of companies against formal regulations, and how comparisons of the governance procedures adopted by different companies were undertaken and facilitated by analysts. Benchmarking, and the making of comparisons of corporate governance practices through a range of devices, are examined. The thesis also examines the linking of corporate governance to the financials (such as profitability, stock price performance, and equity valuation) in the investment analyses performed by analysts. It concentrates on the way in which analysts integrated corporate governance issues in the investment decision making process. Attention is paid to the ideas that shaped and articulated the integration, as well as to the tools and devices deployed by analysts. This thesis argues that greater attention is needed to the "doing" of corporate governance by analysts, and its implications for these "agents of transparency" that have broadened the parameters through which transparency is assessed.

Fält, Anna. "How To Sell A Product : Solo Folk Singing, Personal Branding and Spiritual Journey." Thesis, Kungl. Musikhögskolan, Institutionen för folkmusik, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kmh:diva-2431.

Abstract:
In this thesis I ́m trying to to find out whether we need to make our art into a product and I am using myself and my career as an example of a product. I wanted to use the word “product” in a positive way and inspire people to think about music management and personal branding as something they could use as a tool when working with something creative. I ́m writing about my own journey as a folk musician and solo artist and wish to turn something personal into something common and shared. ! I approached my research question “How much of a product would you have to be in order to be a successful artist at the Nordic folk music scene?” from three angels. Firstly, I ́ve gathered information that I have from my years as a freelance musician. Secondly, I interviewed a few professionals, and finally I read a lot of material and wrote about the basics of music business and working life of a folk musician in the Nordic countries. My theory is that we ́re all selling a product when selling our music and playing for money, that is why we need to know this product, love and respect it and have a need to share it. I believe that finding your artistic me is a spiritual journey and when you start searching for your “core” you ́ll become a better musician since you ́re getting better in recognising and handling your own emotions. I ́m trying to diminish the polarisation between music business and being a genuine artist. I believe that knowing your core gives you power to work better in the field which is continually changing and demands a lot. This spiritual journey into yourself is also an artistic journey and I see personal branding as a fun and inspirational tool for anyone who wants to get to know oneself and build a personal brand which is true, likeable and also selling.

Abstract:
Can the Product Development Process at Tcom be improved by moving usability testing in-house? The interest in this question lies in the agile transformation Tcom initiated in early 2018. Once agile, the company’s interests are efficiency and increasing quality. One way of increasing the quality of their digital products is to improve the process behind it, where involving users in usability testing should be central in an iterative development process. A qualitatively driven mixed methods research approach facilitated the acquisition of the empirical data necessary to successfully answer the research question. The culture of Tcom’s usability testing was collected via a survey. The survey was complemented with the current testing process through four interviews and two observations of usability tests, one internal and one external. Parameters between the two tests were compared and weighted against each other. The main findings reveal that the internal process shows promising characteristics. It is, up to, 1/10 as expensive per participant, has a quicker call-to-test-time, facilitates transparency, and allows refinement of the process. With the main findings in hand, the conclusion points to the fact that usability testing should be composed and conducted by Tcom itself. The greatest challenge to such a change is how a usability perspective can be integrated into the Scrum methodology.

Toner, Brendan. "CONGRESS Y: How Party Leaders Manage The House Of Representatives." OpenSIUC, 2013. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/dissertations/704.

Full text
Abstract:
How do party leaders manage Congress? Congress (specifically, the U.S. Houseof Representatives) provides a limiting case of differing theories of public management, since Congress is populated by highly motivated members (employees) who do not needconstant urging from their party leaders (bosses) to meet the goals of the organization. As a result one would be likely to witness what organizational theorists call Theory Y behavior where leaders work to assure that their membership is able to achieve their personal goals. This leadership style has been discussed and employed over the last sixty years mainly in the private sector and in the bureaucracy. However, much of the congressional literature argues in contrast to theorganizational theorists. Instead it posits that party leaders have to pressure their rank-in file to take actions that are against their personal interests in order to assist the party and the leader without worrying about what the individual member wants or desires in a type of leadership style similar to what is known as Theory X by organizational theorists. This perspective is especially true in the historical case studies of individual leaders and their accomplishments. Believing that the organizational theorists can tell us more about congressional leadership than what we know from the congressional literature. I investigate this question by using qualitative detail and content analysis of over 5,000 newspaper articles on party leaders from 1990-2008 that come from the prominent Capitol Hill newspaperRoll Call in which I coded members of the House for Theory X and Y behavior. I show that in contrast to the congressional literature that most party leaders Democratic and Republican try to empower their rank-in file most of the time rather than trying to "strong arm" them into meeting party goals. In addition, party leaders are more collaborative and empowering when compared with other members of Congress who share many of the same background traits as they do including geography, race and occupational background but are not party leaders. These findings would be in agreement with those who would argue that leaders in the House of Representatives employ Theory Y type leadership in most situations. In the context of these findings, the evidence also provides insight into the occasions in which leaders will resort to a more Theory X, hierarchical leadership style. This has great implications not only for the study of the House of Representatives but could be expanded to look at other political institutions in the United States including the Senate and state legislatures along with parliamentary systems internationally. This dissertation will highlight a key link between organizational theory and political organizations such as Congress in a way that has never been examined before.

Abstract:
The history of housing in Sweden is a central part of our cultural history and for the collective understanding of ourselves. During the 20th century the Swedish state has played an active roll in the production of housing. But, since the 90s the housing question has been left to the market which struggles to produce the quantity of housing that is needed. While the housing that is built today comes with a lot of qualities, it is also ridden with problems. The floor plans are general, yet fixed, common spaces are under prioritized and the possibility to customize your apartment is low. Not to mention that we are moving towards a situation were also rental apartments are put on the free market which under the current situation, could lead to an increased segregation in the bigger cities. The ability to choose how your home should be configurated has become a luxury.   The situation has certain similarities with the speculative way of building of the late 19th century in Sweden. The answer then was to make it possible for workers, small farmers and officials to build their own homes with financial help from the state.   When neither the market nor the state can provide good enough housing for the citizens, it is time to, like before, explore how we can take the matter in our own hands. Today an answer could be joint building ventures. Friends, colleagues or like-minded can get together and build their own multifamily houses by planning, building and finally inhabit the buildings. It is today a tricky process, but experiences from Germany have showed that it can be a reliable way of providing housing when the idea gets more normative. Holmsund could be a good testing ground for joint building ventures. The settlement is expected to grow, there are free central plots and the settlement can provide enough service and commuting possibilities even for people more used to city life.   My system provides a frame, concrete slabs resting on steel columns with a wet core stabilizing the structure laterally. The users are then, in dialogue with the architect and the other residents negotiating the space after their needs and economical situation.

While scholarship in recent decades has begun investigating women's history, museums and historical sites have been slower to do so. Although house museums are more open to interpreting women's history, the histories present often remain limited to the family and the house. In this thesis, I argue that by exploring local archival collections for women's voices, house museums can improve their presentation of women's history. Specifically, I investigate connecting nursing history to upper middle class lifestyles through the Chew family at Cliveden, historical house museum. This paper begins by exploring three local Germantown sites to analyze how women are currently presented on the house tour. Next, I investigate the letters and records of two Chew women, Anne Sophia Penn Chew and Mary Johnson Brown Chew for health concerns, care giving, and the presence of hired nurses. I then explore early nursing training programs at collections housed at the Barbara Bates Center for the Study of the History of Nursing. Using the records of nursing training programs, including the Woman's Hospital, Presbyterian Hospital, and the Visiting Nurse Society of Philadelphia, connections are made between the new trend for educated nurses and upper middle class women and lifestyle, specifically the Chews. Based on my findings, I then propose a method to interpret nursing history on the current house tour at Cliveden. For sources, I especially rely on the documents of the Chew family housed the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. I also draw heavily on the various nursing program records at the Bates Center.

Uecker, Jeffrey Hunter 1950. "How teachers evaluate a curriculum developed in-house: Focused interviews with six teachers." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/282194.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the years the field of evaluation has developed many models for evaluating curricula. These models suggest that teachers ought to be concerned about testing and measurement, technical quality, objectives, equity, and the views of stakeholders (Guba & Lincoln, 1989). The curriculum and teacher change literatures (Doyle & Ponder, 1977; Fullan, 1982; Hawthorne, 1992), on the other hand, have suggested that teachers are guided by a different set of concerns: student learning and classroom management, the amount of work involved, the pressure and support provided, the fit of the new curriculum with the teacher's system of beliefs, its clarity and explicitness, and so forth. Those studies, however, were based on curriculum innovations which were developed outside the school and implemented from the top-down. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the evaluative framework teachers used when they evaluated a curriculum developed within their own department. Focused interviews were conducted with six high school mathematics teachers. The teachers had been involved to varying degrees in the development of their own Pre-algebra course in which they replaced the textbook with an activity-based curriculum. The study found that the teachers, in general, considered those criteria suggested by the change literature to be of greater importance for evaluation than those suggested by the evaluation literature. The study also found that the teachers' views of the importance of the individual evaluation criteria was not uniform, but that the teachers' views were mediated by the degree to which they had participated in the development of the curriculum. A model of the teachers' evaluative framework was developed, but further research is needed to illuminate the role of the teacher participation. This study is of particular interest to those concerned with curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation.

Abstract:

Sawe, Joseph. "How the House of Morgan Cooperated to Develop the Large-Cap US Multinational Corporation, 1895-1913." Thesis, Harvard University, 2015. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:24078367.

Full text
Abstract:
The following investigation is intended to determine how the large-cap US multinational corporation was further advanced during the pivotal years of 1895-1913 by a leading private unincorporated institution—House of Morgan. Historical review and assessment focused on the broader US society, government, monetary landscape, the House of Morgan, leading large cap US multinationals; looking at both the key organizations and underlying people in power. The report framework focuses upon the development of the US super structure within which all major companies work down to the way actual institutions organize economic assets in the form of a multinational corporation. Questions that have been considered include: how was business conducted globally with so little formal mechanisms in place, the importance of the various forms of capital for business, and the various roles politics played in business development. Other areas include how owners and managers were effectively separated, how these same companies were able to branch out its product offering and the importance of providing corporate incentives. The House of Morgan cooperated with leading merchant banks, governments, foundations in developing an over-arching environment that was better adapted to the realities of the recent agricultural, industrial, and transportation revolutions that had brought about an integrated world. To organize economic assets in a more efficient and stable manner, large-cap multinationals were the preferred alternative, with a wave of consolidation across industries, underpinned by the pristine Morgan name. Strong board presence, interlocking corporate representation, active role in strategic planning, and management selection ensured that not only were new corporations molded in the design of the House of Morgan but also that they would stay committed to the far-reaching objectives. The House of Morgan took on more than just a focus of increasing shareholder value. They were driven by lofty ambitions of providing comprehensive stability within society at large in a rapidly changing world. The partners of the House of Morgan families had for generations been at the vanguard for providing the highest level of leadership throughout society in areas including business, politics, finance, and religion. These leading families were instrumental in providing the backbone of American society including founding the US Republic, developing the most venerable education institutions, and providing a moral compass through religious revival movements. The House of Morgan would help bring about generally larger and more institutionalized solutions from preceding generations that were conducive for multinational corporations to operate within. This ranges from a US central bank, developing modern non-profits structure, and funding the transportation network making the world more integrated. In helping organize broader US society, the House of Morgan would interlock different subsystems, including finance, charity, and politics with business in promotion of a more harmonious, predictable and productive society. The House of Morgan development of leading US large-cap multinationals, including General Electric, International Harvester, International Mercantile Marine and US Steel illustrates how it not only provided for the macro landscape to operate within, but also developed the leading companies of the era.

Allen, Peter. "Bring in the professionals : how pre-parliamentary political experience affects political careers in the House of Commons." Thesis, Birkbeck (University of London), 2014. http://bbktheses.da.ulcc.ac.uk/42/.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis I use original empirical data to examine the impact of the political experience of MPs before they enter parliament on their careers once inside the House of Commons. The contribution I make to knowledge is twofold. First, I build on existing literature in the field by developing a stand-alone classification of pre-parliamentary political experience that distinguishes between experience gained on the local level, for example as a local councillor, and experience gained on the national level, working for an MP or in the head office of a political party. Second, I empirically operationalise this classification and support it adopting quantitative research techniques. Using a cohort study of those MPs first elected at the 1997 general election, I find that those MPs with national-level pre-parliamentary political experience are more likely to reach cabinet-level frontbench positions while MPs with local-level experience are more likely to remain backbenchers or reach only the lower levels of government. I highlight the ways in which national-level pre-parliamentary political experience interacts with other political and personal factors to provide a small group of MPs with a preferential parliamentary career path relative to their colleagues. I conclude by placing my findings in the context of comparative research on political parties, reflecting that certain types of party structure privilege specific types of pre-parliamentary political experience. I also consider the findings in light of debates on political representation and professionalisation, and highlight directions for future research in this area.

Abstract:
Material supply is much more than the cost of materials. It is a chain of activities that require resources, which over time accumulate costs such as salaries and rents. The accumulated cost of the linked activities is the total cost of a process of material supply. To find the total cost, a holistic perspective is required. This study has collected empirical data at Skanska, a Swedish construction company, where supporting units work towards construction projects. One of them is a logistics unit that provides logistics services focusing on material supply in projects of house construction. The activities of the system in which the logistics services operate lead to costs that are not visibly attached to the process, but rather to the resources of it. The whole is the material supply process and the components of its total cost must thus be understood. The logistics services provided by the logistics unit to the projects incorporate the total cost perspective, however, this is not always considered by all in production. Thus a tool to prove the holistic view of the effect of different strategies is necessary. The aim of this study has been to create a tool for evaluating the total cost of material supply, with the purpose to create a common platform for strategic decisions, on which both parties can agree on the total cost of different strategies. Through interviews at Skanska, and visits to construction sites, a material supply process for residential house construction has been identified. This was developed into a process map that represents the material supply process at the worksite in projects that are not using logistics services. The process map includes activities, but also options for strategic decisions and delays due to random happenings. This makes the process flexible for each unique project. Also the cost generating parameters have been identified for input into the process. The difficulty has been to find a general process due to the unique nature of construction projects. The process is an estimated model of reality. With the general material supply process as a basis, the impact of implementing each logistics service in the process was explored. A process map of material supply at the worksite was developed with each of them individually; Consolidated Deliveries, Carry-in Services, and Delivery Calendar. These process maps show the change in activities and links between them, as well as the related cost generating parameters. To a large extent, these parameters are the same, but will be different in value due to the underlying strategies of the logistics services. The focus of Consolidated Deliveries is to reduce the number of deliveries and to deliver Just-intime for production by consolidating materials at a terminal before it reaches the worksite. This removes buffer stock and reduces material waste. The Carry-in Services focus on outsourcing thematerial handling activities performed by the workforce and increases the focus on core activities by the workforce. The Delivery Calendar focus on increasing transparency of resource allocation, which leads to greater possibilities to optimize the use of resources, and also a smoother flow of activities with less waiting time. The result of this study is a logical tool that can be used for evaluation of the total cost of materialsupply strategies. The suggestion is to use the process maps and identified parameters to develop a simulation model. By finding the values of the identified parameters, and running the simulation program, the difference in total cost between the material supply strategies can be identified.

Abstract:
Location has been found to be a paramount factor for house prices. Not only do house prices vary between different places, these spatial variations also tend to change through time. This thesis seeks to understand the role of location, or 'space' on house prices and the contemporary changing geographical patterns of house prices in England and Wales over time through novel model-based statistical approaches. How 'space' can be incorporated into different price modelling strategies is first examined. It is found that 'space' is important at multiple scales for house prices, and multilevel models specified at the micro level of house and the macro level of neighbourhoods are particularly effective at capturing these multiscale latent effects. This framework is then deployed to compare different conceptualisations of 'space', through postcode, census geography and neighbourhood classifications for London. It is again confirmed that location is important and that geography and spatial contiguity matters. It proceeds by incorporating the 'time' element to analyse the changing dynamics of house prices between places. The spatial and temporal variations in London house prices are considered simultaneously through growth curve models and group-based methods. Both the observed and unobserved heterogeneous price trajectories between places are used to develop a new typology of neighbourhood change. The spatiotemporal patterns for the entirety of England and Wales are finally investigated through a fixed- and random-effects approach, whereby both regional-level and multiple sub-regional levels are considered simultaneously. Very distinctive patterns are found in London compared to what has happened in other regions. This thesis presents the first large-scale systematic analysis of the contemporary changing geographies at multiple spatial scales during a time when the UK's housing market has undergone substantial temporal fluctuations and increased spatial variations. The empirical results also have important implications for central and local governments for spatially differentiated housing policy and local urban regeneration.

Although the Council House Fight is well written about in the annals of early Texas history, this all-encompassing study will reveal a whole new picture. Unlike previous works that maintained one point of view, multiple perspectives were analyzed and explored to allow a more comprehensive view of the Council House Fight to emerge. Primary focus on social and cultural misunderstandings, as well as the mounting hostility between the Penateka Comanche and Texians across the frontier, will demonstrate their general distrust and hatred of the other. Detailing their complicated relationship will prove that neither the Texians nor the Comanche were without blame, and both shared responsibility for the deterioration of events on and before March 19, 1840.

The domain of sales management research for luxury products is still nascent. With the persistent growth of luxury brands and ongoing optimistic projections for the future, it is imperative to take a step forward in this field and understand the triggers that enable luxury sales. The personal luxury goods industry operates via two routes to market – “retail” (directly controlled by luxury brand manufacturers) and “wholesale” (outside of luxury brand manufacturer’s control). A significant amount of sales happen via the “wholesale” route, in multi-brand stores where a mix of luxury brands co-exists with non-luxury brands. Drawing from a literature on cognitive dissonance and social identity theory, using multilevel methods, this dissertation raises the question of how to predict salespeople’s effort allocation towards a focal luxury brand in this multi-brand selling environment

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.
The use of leading indicators provides a valuable method to predict changes in macro-economic variables. However, the accuracy of the various models using leading indicators is a topic of constant debate. This study aimed to identify whether leading indicator models predicting residential house price changes performed as well during the recent global financial crisis (fourth quarter 2007 to second quarter 2012) as during the period directly before the crisis. Several potential drivers of the South African property market were identified with the help of previous studies on this topic. Following that, a quantitative analysis was done and single leading indicator models were built using regression analysis to evaluate the importance of each independent variable. This information was used to create a composite leading index for the South African housing market. The accuracy of these models were then compared to predict the changes in house prices during the period preceding the recent global economic crisis. It was found that the ability of these leading indicator models to predict house price changes during the recent global economic crisis decreased significantly.

Abstract:
This is an essay about Asperger’s syndrome from a pedagogical perspective. My research question is what is important for a teacher to know about Asperger’s syndrome and why? The essay shows that it is important to be aware that pupils with Asperger’s syndrome might have difficulties in understanding, for instance, social cues and non-verbal language. It also deals with how to use visual methods to teach pupils with Asperger’s syndrome. Both research and examples from novels are used to emphasize individual variations when it comes to the symptoms of Asperger’s syndrome. The essay deals with essential features of Asperger’s syndrome/Asperger’s Disorder such as different social impairments, intense interests and the need for consistency. The discussion alternates between the disorder’s features and events from the novels House Rules and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, which are both novels dealing with Asperger’s.

Abstract:
Today’s household debt consists for the most part of credit money, and this general phenomenon does not only occur in Sweden. Money in the economy is mostly created by private banks, as much as 97 percent of the money in the United States, while central banks only create a very small share of all money. This is the reason for the oppressed household debt. During this period of high debt in Sweden, the household consumption has also increased in comparison to earlier years. The aim is to study and compare how the money supply in two different full-reserve systems, the Austrian through convertibility and the Chicago plan through quantity control, would reduce the household debt in relation to today’s fractional system. The method used in this study is a time series analysis where data of Sweden’s household debt, savings, money supply; M1 and M3, GDP, assets, currency reserves, gold reserves and interest rates has been collected for the years 2005-2013. These are further examined in three different equations. The data for all the variables was collected from SCB, IMF, Ekonomifakta and the World Data Bank. The first theory that is used in this study is Wicksell’s cumulative process which will explain how the money supply M3 affects household debt in today's fractional reserve system. The second theory is the Austrian Business Cycle Theory which will examine the money supply M1 effect on household debt through full reserves by convertibility control. The third theory is the Friedman rule, where the effect of household debt by money supply M1 will be examined. This rule explains how the Chicago Plan is affecting household debt through a full reserve system by quantity control. In the both systems, fractional reserves and full reserves, the debt will increase in this study. The result shows that with full reserves, the household debt would be backed by savings in comparison to fractional reserves, where household debt would be backed by credit money. Therefore, full reserves would contribute to a healthier economy in contrast to today’s fractional system. Since it would involve a large cost for Sweden to transcend to an Austrian system through convertibility, where price inertia would occur as well, the conclusion of this study is that the Chicago Plan, based on the quantity principle, is to prefer.

Abstract:
Chicano or Mexican-American and Dominican-American: people with latinity in their existence, a language, and the Hispanic origin in common, but with different backgrounds within the United States. The experience of living in the hyphen, the place where two worlds blend (or collide), is dramatized in texts written by authors who, from their own immigrant experiences, show the difficult journey from one culture to another and offer insights about accepting their Hispanic roots inside an environment which sees them as the Other. Sandra Cisneros, a Chicana author, and Julia Alvarez, a Dominican-American writer, make part of this movement which starts to verge on the literary canon and which, even though classified as Ethnic Literature, starts to find some room within North-American Literature. Through the comparison between Sandra Cisneros The house on Mango Street and Julia Alvarez How the García girls lost their accents, we attempt not only to trace a historic and socioeconomic panorama in which these books are inserted, but also to identify cultural phenomena and ideological aspects involved in this context. Because of the wide-ranging nature and for including areas of study which deal with the relationship between opposing forces, like dominator/dominated, as well as for the connection with post-colonial matters, some presuppositions of the Cultural Studies guide this work. In a semi-autobiographical manner, both authors depict the sorrow and conflicts of characters that search for acceptance and a dignifying space in this place-between, facing the barriers of sexism, racism, and social prejudice

Abstract:
With the change in behaviour from the customers’ side, due to the increased use of digital environments, marketers have seen a value in customer related data. In order to fully benefit from the data, many marketing efforts have been brought back in to the own organisation. This study aims to further explain how the marketing department have been affected by the changing in-house trend and give practical suggestions on how to cope with the challenges. Previous research in the area has been reviewed and a summary has been conducted. The data collection consisted of semi-structured interviews with marketers from various industries. Respondents with insightful information in the modern marketing department was interviewed and the findings later analysed. The analysis was conducted with support of categories established from the findings in the literature review. The study resulted in a confirmation of the in-house trend in modern marketing departments and the challenges facing them. The findings of the study have contributed to previous literature by confirming and adding insights in a field where most research is made by trade organisations. An independent academic study in the field could be seen as an important addition to the existing literature in the area. For marketers in the area, a greater understanding of the problem will help make the marketing efforts more effective. Key findings include the importance in understanding the customer and what is required in order to make best use of the in-house marketing department.

"How to best 'sell' the 'best-seller' clause? : a review on whether the contract adjustment mechanism proposed by the EU draft Digital Single Market Directive can secure fair (additional) remuneration for authors and performers." Thesis, Queen Mary, University of London, 2018. http://qmro.qmul.ac.uk/xmlui/handle/123456789/42530.

Abstract:
The current - and very relevant - debate about the way authors and performers lose control over exploitation, and more importantly, revenue generated through use of their works and performances in the digital world somewhat overshadows the fact that there are existing scenarios arising from the normal course of dealings in such works where the same occurs and were remedy of any such "injustice" has not been fully enshrined in law. A right to additional fair remuneration is a concept recognised to various degrees in some Member States of the EU but not all, scaling from (seemingly) zero in the UK to quite an elaborate regulation in Germany. Where they are recognised, application and enforcement of relevant provisions also vary. The EU sought to harmonise the issue of author's and performer's access to fair share of revenue generated from exploitation of their work or performance (for normal dealings and in digital spheres of copyright exploitation) in its new draft Directive. The Proposal for a Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market published in September 2016 dedicates its Chapter 3 of Title IV to Fair remuneration in contracts of authors and performers; contract adjustment mechanism introduced in Article 15 attempts to tackle the issue by proposing a statutory right to additional remuneration being introduced throughout the EU Member States. Or, was the aim of this provision originally even broader? In this work, three main areas are addressed: (i) the background and justification of inclusion of such provisions into the Draft DSM Directive; (ii) current applicable law in Germany, Czech Republic and the UK; three countries each representing different historical and doctrinal approach to copyright law and thus providing unique benchmarks for the analysis, (iii) reconciliation of the first two parts: analysing what - if any - change in the national legislation would be needed for the three Member States to transpose the provision into the national laws. By way of conclusion, recommendations to amend Article 15 of the draft Directive is based on the analysis made in the third part.

Abstract:
There are varieties in the format an action learning. (AL) program is organized and their learning objectives were quite murky. However, according to Reg Revans, AL should be able to help the participants to learn critical self reflection which is also an important capability for a manager to lead change in their own organization. The researcher had the opportunity of organizing two AL programs for high potential management staff of two manufacturing companies in China. In order to achieve AL’s learning objective, these two programs were designed around the 5 key ingredients of AL discovered from the literature review. These 5 key ingredients were – emerging programmed knowledge; real problem; participants implement their own proposed actions; questioning insight with each other; and take improved action. As the target participants of each AL program were high potential Chinese management staff of the same company and were acquainted with each other, it was alleged that these 4 contextual factors – (1) the program arranged in-house in a (2) Chinese cultural context for (3) high potential management staff who were (4) acquainted with each other, could have an impact on the 5 key ingredients of AL. Literature mentioned little on ways these 4 contextual factors could impact on AL programs. In order to understand the way the 5 key ingredients could create impacts on the AL process, the methodology of action research (AR) was adopted. The AL program in Cycle 1 was a failure as some of the contextual factors had hindered the effective functioning of several key AL ingredients. Armed 4 with the experience, another AL program was organized. It was found that one of the team had enabled the members to practice critical self reflections but another team still failed to do that. This research seems to point out the possibility of achieving the learning objective of AL – critical self reflection when the 5 key ingredients were functioning effectively. However, the 4 contextual factors could enable the personality of the participants to become a roadblock for the effective functioning of the 5 key ingredients and rendered the AL program to become ineffective.

Abstract:
As the climate crisis continues to evolve many companies focus their development on becoming more sustainable. With greenhouse gases being highlighted as the main problem, food waste has obtained a great deal of attention after being named the third largest contributor to global emissions. One way retailers have attempted to improve is through offering close-to-date produce at discount, hence decreasing levels of food being thrown away. To minimize waste the level of discount must be optimized, and as the products can be seen as flawed the known price-to-demand relation of the products may be insufficient. The optimization process historically involves generalized linear regression models, however demand is a complex concept influenced by many factors. This report investigates whether a Machine Learning model, Random Forest Regression, is better at estimating the demand of close-to-date products at different discount levels than a basic linear regression model. The discussion also includes an analysis on whether discounts always increase the will to buy and whether this depends on product type. The results show that Random Forest to a greater extent considers the many factors influencing demand and is superior as a predictor in this case. Furthermore it was concluded that there is generally not a clear linear relation however this does depend on product type as certain categories showed some linearity.

Corporate governance has been in the spotlight for the past two decades, being subject of numerous researches all over the world. Governance is pictured as a broad and diverse theme, evolving through different routes to form distinct systems. This scenario together with 2 types of agency problems (investor vs. management and minorities vs. controlling shareholders) produce different definitions for governance. Usually, studies investigate whether corporate governance structures influence firm performance, and company valuation. This approach implies investors can identify those impacts and later take them into consideration when making investment decisions. However, behavioral finance theory shows that not always investors take rational decisions, and therefore the modus operandi of those professionals needs to be understood. So, this research aimed to investigate to what extent Brazilian corporate governance standards and practices influence the investment decision-making process of equity markets' professionals from the sell-side and buy-side. This exploratory study was carried out through qualitative and quantitative approaches. In the qualitative phase, 8 practitioners were interviewed and 3 dimensions emerged: understanding, pertinence and practice. Based on the interviews’ findings, a questionnaire was formulated and distributed to buy-siders and sell-siders that cover Brazilian stocks. 117 respondents from all over the world contributed to the study. The data obtained were analyzed through structural equation modeling and descriptive statistics. The 3 dimensions became 5 constructs: definition (institutionalized governance, informal governance), pertinence (relevance), practice (valuation process, structured governance assessment) The results of this thesis suggest there is no definitive answer, as the extent to which governance will influence an investment decision process will depend on a number of circumstances which compose the context. The only certainty is the need to present a 'corporate governance behavior', rather than simply establishing rules and regulations at firm and country level.

Storey, Helen Caroline. "Gris-gris : a novel ; and, Contextualising research : crafting the rape scene: an exploration of how Toni Morrison and Isabel Allende write rape scenes in The Bluest Eye and The House of Spirits and how their approaches influence the crafting of those in Gris-gris." Abstract:
The creative component of this thesis, the novel Gris-gris, explores how a mother's betrayal of her daughter and the resulting rape of that daughter is reiterated through three following generations of women within the same family. In the contextualizing component, I explore approaches to effectively crafting the pivotal rape scenes in Gris-gris to avoid reducing the novel, in the reader's mind, to being primarily one "about rape". I did not want the scenes to be pornographic or voyeuristic, metaphorical or ambiguous. I wanted them to be honest and truly affecting - but not hijack the novel's central narrative, which is how one mother's betrayal reverberates through following generations. Two popular, literary novels with plots that hinge on rape scenes are Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye and Isabel Allende's The House of Spirits. The architecture and positioning of the rape scenes in these works has much to do with each novel's unique narrative power. My original contribution to knowledge, therefore, is a study -- from the point of view of a practicing creative writer -- of 1) how these two writers craft rape scenes in these novels and 2) how, in the writing of Gris-gris, I situate and develop my own practice in terms of craft, while responding to personal and social considerations. This study will inform the creative writer who is assessing how to modulate scenes of rape in literature as one novelist's considered approach to the delicate balances involved in crafting such scenes.

"Reps or agents or both: Managers' rationale behind how to organize the sales function : About the rationale of decision-makers in manufacturing companies of the Swedish prefabricated wooden house industry behind the organization of sales forces." Thesis, Internationella Handelshögskolan, Högskolan i Jönköping, IHH, Företagsekonomi, 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-30273.

Abstract:
Problem - Decision makers shape the structure of the sales function, but it is unclear how they go about it and why. The rationale for making certain decisions need to be analyzed in order to understand why different decision makers apply different sales strategies. Topic - The Swedish prefabricated wooden house industry consists of many actors with no clear market leader. The sales force seems to mainly consists of external sales agents (manufacturers' representatives, also called reps), though some manufacturers also employ direct sales agents at the manufacturing company. Prefabricated wooden houses corresponded to 86% of all building permits requested during 2015. Purpose - This thesis aims to explore decision-makers' rationale behind the organization of manufacturers' sales forces in the Swedish prefabricated wooden house industry. Method - Semi-structures interviews with decision makers at manufacturing companies in the Swedish prefabricated wooden house industry have been conducted in order to fulfill the purpose of this study. The empirical findings are then analyzed based on theory that has been collected through partly inductive, partly deductive approaches. Main results - Decision makers use different arguments to justify their strategies. Many different rationale applied translates into no clear pattern besides the one that there seems to be no clear pattern. Arguments for a rationale decision are given without analytical proof for an assumption. Some interviewees are in essence for an integrated sales force, though might also work with reps.

Zebregs, Yanthe. "Refugees: ‘normal’ people like us that take off their shoes before entering ‘their house’, which does not exist : A comparative framing analysis: how four Dutch newspapers covered the fires in refugee camp Moria." Abstract:
During the 2010’s a new situation emerged due to the influx of people using the Mediterranean Sea route. Around its peak in 2015, widespread media coverage constructed this crisis as ‘the refugee crisis’. Camps like Moria became the emblem of the refugee crisis, yet, more than half a decade later, the ‘crisis’ has yet to be resolved. And, amid a pandemic, a global crisis, not the least affecting refugees, yet another ‘crisis’ arose during the night of 8th/9th September 2020 when a series of fires almost completely destroyed refugee camp Moria, leaving more than 10.000 refugees ‘homeless’. It is in this unique context, at the intersection of ‘the refugee crisis’, ‘the corona crisis’ and ‘the fires in camp Moria’ that this exploratory study captures written news coverage from the four biggest Dutch newspapers, engaging with the refugee crisis in the first week after the fires (9-15 September 2020). It does so, with the aim of exploring the range of frames used to (re)construct the refugee crisis, thereby making certain meanings more likely to be conveyed than others.  Directed at an event focussed time frame within an understudied national context, this study zooms in on a moment of heightened media import to explore the (re)construction of frames as the situation unfolds. To this end, a qualitative inductive framing analysis, focussing on how the frames are reconstructed through framing and reasoning devices, has been conducted on a total of 60 articles.  Including both broadsheets and tabloids with diverse political backgrounds in the sample, significant differences between the coverage of the two tabloids and the two broadsheets were found. The former (tabloids, Telegraaf politically right oriented and AD politically neutral oriented) significantly distance the situation in Moria, the refugees and the refugee crisis as a whole, quite often even framing the refugees as a problem while rejecting humanitarian grounds. The latter (broadsheets, Volkskrant politically (centre) left oriented and NRC politically centre right oriented) were found to centralize humanisation and identification within a humanitarian frame, while problematizing, and assigning responsibility to political handling. Furthermore, the coverage of the tabloids is characterised by more superficial, descriptive accounts, using little framing devices, while the coverage of both broadsheets is saturated with framing devices to substantiate the humanitarian frame.             Finally, the study also found similarities on the level of incorrect labelling (the usage of migrants instead of, or as interchangeable with refugees) and ‘voicelesness’ (the rare opportunity for refugees to speak). The sample articles more often than not mix labels. Furthermore, the broadsheets give (multiple) refugees a voice in respectively 2 (Volkskrant) and 3 (NRC) articles. And in doing so, these articles actually centralize those accounts. Both tabloids on the other hand, only briefly quote an anonymous and un-contextualised refugee once. Although the broadsheets ‘do better’, still, overwhelmingly, refugees themselves do not play a role in their representation and framing.

Abstract:
To be creative or innovative is a highly praised trait within the labor market of today. Though it has often been seen as a talent only granted to a chosen few, most evidence imply that it is something that we all possess and can develop. Creativity within education also appears to have positive impacts on school-results, attendance and confidence among students. Yet creativity has a low status within the current education system, making the opportunities to develop our creative ability insufficient.  Architectural projects and development strategies focused around creativity have occurred frequently on the agenda since the release of Richard Floridas book “The Rise of the Creative Class” in 2002. An increase of creative activity has been linked to growth but lately also to gentrification, as if this was an inevitable result. The focus has been on economic growth and increased tourism, instead of what creativity can bring to the individual and the community.  This thesis aims to answer two main questions: First, how can creative places benefit the schools and communities in socio-economically challenged areas? Second, how can these creative places best be designed to achieve these benefits? Creative places refer in this thesis to public spaces that encourages creativity, which can be places for creative production but also places for experiencing creative works of others. The aim is also to implement the learnings into a design proposal, where the area Vivalla in Örebro is chosen as the site for implementation. In order to answer the first question, the paper examines the existing conditions of vulnerable areas in Sweden and some of the available research on creativity in relation to education. To gain knowledge about design aspects four existing projects that aims to be places for creativity are analyzed. The local conditions of Vivalla are mainly researched through qualitative methods of observation, interviews and a workshop with students from the local school. Finally, the ideas and findings are implemented into a design-proposal, which is a vision for a new creative platform. Rather than a finished project, the proposal should be seen as a vision showing the potentials of the site that can be used as a basis for discussion with the local actors, This paper provides some useful arguments to why creative places in socio-economically challenged areas are worth investing in and highlights the importance of an inclusive development process. Finally, it also provides a diverse view of one of Sweden’s most segregated areas.

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to find out when Research and Development (R&D) becomes a suitable attribute for a production company to outsource. In an environment where innovations are following up quickly up and uncertainty about the type of innovation and customer is a fact, external sourcing can bring a competitive advantage. The empirical evidence shows that when R&D is outsourced the total cost does not increase at a due cause of outsourcing in this given study.

Although a lot of theory explains outsourcing as a cost increasing factor, the internal experience and frequent relation between the technical production company Beta and its R&D vendor company Alfa can decrease costs considerably due to lower communication and governance costs. This was not explicitly expressed in related theory and is therefore a contribution to the academia as well as for managers who seek to find an answer to the question of when to outsource and when not to outsource.

Abstract Natural Hysteria... is a trans-disciplinary practice led investigation which documents the process of production of a cycle of text based performances -rituals, street actions, theatrical presentations, and video presentations, songs and workshops. It is an artistic response to the deterioration of our environment and the attacks on cultural and biological diversity being carried out by a capitalist system based on the accumulation of wealth at all costs which is leading us to the border of an ecological collapse. It proceeds through an analyses of other dissident artistic practices which share a queer, feminist postcolonial or ecological perspective linking them to the concepts explored in my work in order to contextualise it in the expanded field of the contemporary arts. The alternative "hysteria" that forms the conceptual basis of this project has its beginnings in the dawn of the modern age and traces a history of domination of those "others": focusing mainly on women, gender and sexual dissidents, people of colour and animals. The exploitation of natural and human resources is a consequence of a worldview based on the establishment of binary oppositions that allow the "other" to be classified and dominated. For example: man / woman, white / black, hetero / homosexual, culture / nature. The construction of these "others" - the "feminine", the "native", the "queer", "nature" - excludes these subjects from the construction of a master identity that, nevertheless, depends on these categories for its existence. In the Renaissance the fields of the sciences and the humanities were not separated. The mechanistic view of the world had not completely overcome pagan beliefs in magic and in a spiritual force which resides in all beings. This vision was a relic of the pre-Christian era and would finally be eradicated by the united forces of State and Church through the processes of the Inquisition, the witch hunts, colonization and the new religion of "Science". All of these processes have produced a huge change in our relationship with nature, currently seen as a totally inert entity. Nature is no longer part of our being and has became nothing more than raw material. Colonisation continues today under a neoliberal politics which uses the concept of development to requisition territory from indigenous people in order to exploit its natural resources. This is justified by qualifying these people as primitive because their way of life is based on living in equilibrium with nature. The function of a politically engaged artistic practise is to challenge the notion that no alternative exists to the current system. The theoretical and artistic framework of this investigation has led to the development of a performative alter ego, the transgender shaman Geyserbird, and to the configuration of a series of performances which included participatory rituals, installations with presence and the queer appropriation of abandoned industrial spaces. The transgender shaman is a spiritual being who goes beyond the limitations of the binary gender system and connects to indigenous cultures. The deployment of this figure in a contemporary context, invites the public to imagine other possibilities for themselves and for our society
Abstract:
Dr. Eleine Mad is Madeleine Jacobsson's spokesperson for the scientific and paranormal discoveries that arise in her worlds. She describes content, tecniques and aesthetics based on a categorization system where art is divided into different types of components and then decoded as they go. To understand the intuition's involvement in the work process, it is transformed into three separate roles by a Seeker, Collector and a Myntare(In swedish language the one who is a "myntare" -is verbally declaring a concept or term). With these roles I try to describe in what ways intuition is beneficial or devastating to the artistic work. The story of M is about a frog-like character, Delop, who leaves the home planet to seek out other worlds. In her search, Delop finds a world whose views and lifestyles differ from her experiences of "reality" as she learned to survive in it.

Abstract:
Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Arquitectura, apresentada ao Departamento de Arquitectura da F. C. T. da Univ. de Coimbra.
Since the official establishment of the Macao Special Administrative Region [MSAR] in 1999, which meant its handover to the People's Republic of China [PRC], this territory has been in delirious transformation. The liberalization of the gambling industry and the consequent proliferation of casinos and luxury hotels, as well as the recent inscription of its Historical Centre in the UNESCO's World Heritage List are the most significant events of the last decade. In fact, the territory has become a severe case of a flourishing economy since then, especially due to its blooming tourism industry, mostly driven by the gambling sector and its high revenues. Together, these singularities have been leaving an impressive mark on the city which has been attracting millions of tourists every year, while making way for remarkable financial growth, promoting Macao's wealthy status. Undoubtedly, Macao has evolved into a well known touristic city in the first decade of the new authority, but with no further land to grow, limited infrastructures and reduced array of industries, the city could not afford being on the verge of becoming a victim of its own success. New measures became necessary to prevent Macao from urban and economic failure. In order to inhibit the city of running out of attractiveness, the government has realized the need to implement new measures tailored to the territory's updated reality and ambitions. In addition, one must not disregard the powerful influence of its surrounding area, the Pearl River Delta [PRD] region. Since the late 1970's, when the PRC introduced a new open-door policy, the financial growth of the nation has been unquestionable. The world now looks up to the PRC as an economic powerhouse, where the PRD has played a crucial part, revealing itself as one of the motors of such prosperous economy. Once under the PRC sovereignty and with its matchless location at the doorway of the Chinese mainland, Macao has been recognized as an integrating element of the national development blueprint and acknowledged as part of a larger regional endeavour. It is the PRC's will to launch the implementation of a mega conurbation having the MSAR, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region [HKSAR] and the city of Guangzhou (in PRC's mainland) as the three main supporting cores, taking advantage of each area's main specificities: "[...] the Pearl River Delta will strengthen its cooperation and coordination with Hong Kong and Macao to bring into play each other’s advantages. The region is supported to pursue convergence with Hong Kong and Macao in terms of urban planning, rail transit networks, information networks [...] so as to forge jointly the most dynamic and internationally competitive city cluster of the Asia-Pacific region."2 In addition, the development plan for the PRD has "set for the first time the placement of Macao as a tourism and leisure centre at the global level [...], which demands more effort from the administration of the MSAR and introduces a new dynamic for a more efficient participation of Macao in the regional cooperation."3 The MSAR government had already defined the city as a selling product through various measures on the development of Macao as a touristic city, but the PRC's announcement came as a reinforcement of the MSAR tourism-oriented governmental discourse, whose future development is now supposed to occur in concurrence with its neighbours, readjusting itself to the stated PRC's course of action. Being Architecture a key strategy within the management and marketing of territories, How to sell Macau4 proposes a journey along the urban reinvention planned for the territory, which is being conducted as a means to provide the city with a new promotional image and superior living quality, surpassing its inherent morphological drawbacks. In fact, several projects are being implemented already, whose effects on the territory will be irreversible. For this research, the structuring of the city planning was based on three major topics: CITYSCAPE; REGIONAL INTERLOCKING and TRANSPORTATION NETWORK, essential to attract investors and potential inhabitants; to promote a global satisfaction level amongst the residents and, most importantly, to serve as a tourism booster. This research is presented in two main chapters. Chapter 1 will firstly focus on Macao, contextualizing its latest urban and economic transformations, providing an overall understanding of the territory's urban change narrative until what Macao stands for nowadays. Also, taking into account that "China's international cities cannot form without the surrounding metropolitan interlocking region,"5 it will take a tour around Macao to get to know its neighbours, comprehend its role within this vast area and assess the valuable significance of such urban region for its future development. Chapter 2 will embark on the analysis of the most decisive projects for the upcoming years. These will be divided into sub-chapters according to their nature. CITYSCAPE will focus on the main project affecting the territory's skyline and waterfront arrangement: the new landfills plan, while REGIONAL INTERLOCKING will present the joint plan for the Hengqin island and the Shizimen Central Business District [CBD] on the nearby municipality of Zhuhai (in PRC's mainland). At last, TRANSPORTATION NETWORK will highlight the implementation of the Macao Light Rapid Transit System [LRTS] as well as the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge [HKZMB] venture. As the result of my emergent curiosity on the way this territory is perceived nowadays, this research attempts to inform of the challenging and unprecedented momentum that Macao is currently facing by picturing the overall expected transformation and mapping the city's intended expansion. Needless to say, this mise-en-scène would not be complete without pointing out eventual contradictions or adversities such as the UNESCO regulations, the high population density, the evident discrepancy between the old and the new city and, more importantly, the lack of an urban and tourism master plan, both deemed vital to successfully achieve a sustainable city vision. Acknowledging the new city's image as more than its physical appearance or outer shell, it also aims at questioning how the new proposals will intervene in the creation of a new figure for the territory and in which way they will be a catalyst for the consolidation of its status as a worldclass engaging tourism centre, along with its regional partners. What prospect of urban planning is there for Macao and who takes responsibility for it? Is it all in the hands of the PRC or does the MSAR has a valid say on its future? To what extent does the tourism-related objectives are influencing the city planning? Indeed, while revealing strategic planning as a powerful political instrument, it explores the political principles, motivations and intervenient parts lying underneath such mega territorial operation under the context of the socio-economic restructuring process in implementation since the handover. However, the city itself is never a finished project.6 Instead, its essence relies on the continued sequence of different stages, miscellaneous strategies and plans. Therefore, this research is not able to attain an irrefutable portrayal of Macao's future urban development. In order to assure the utmost certainty and precision (for the time being), this essay was mainly based on official reports and governmental publications and ordinances, academic papers, interviews and articles, attended seminars and exhibitions. Nonetheless, it still has a fair margin of error. None of the mentioned projects is near conclusion, allowing enough time for eventual amend of the plans, circumstances or even the players involved. Whether Macao will survive or not to this ambitious announced metamorphosis is hard to tell so far. Even so, I still find it essential these days to build up awareness, thereby one should still address the hereafter presented intentions and perhaps, learn with Macao's sui generis citymaking.
