Hagström, Karl, and Annika Stengard. "How Swedish companies operating in Southeast Asia overcome trade obstacles." Thesis, University of Gävle, Department of Business Administration and Economics, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hig:diva-320.

Full text
Abstract:

As the globalization continues to intensify, companies around the world are increasingly looking for business opportunities outside the borders of their home country. In order to be successful and take advantage of low cost opportunities offered in other countries the need for free trade agreements is something all companies should be lobbying for.

The majority of the Southeast Asian countries are considered underdeveloped and compared to most European countries they are far behind when it comes to political as well as economical developments. Besides, European and Asian countries have very diverse historical backgrounds and peoples’ behaviors differ a lot causing culture clashes and nontariff barriers to trade to arise.

With the purpose of studying how Swedish companies operating in Southeast Asia can overcome trade obstacles and what impact an EU-ASEAN FTA may have when doing business in the region, the authors have carried out in-depth interviews with five Swedish companies based in Singapore. The thesis covers the different issues Swedish companies face when trading with counterparties in the region and answers the below stated research questions:

- Which are the main obstacles for Swedish companies to trade within Southeast Asia?

- How can Swedish companies operating in Southeast Asia overcome these obstacles to trade from a management perspective?

- What impact can the current EU-ASEAN FTA have on Swedish companies’ potential to succeed in doing business in Southeast Asia?

The interviews have been put in perspective with the help of theories within obstacles to trade, cultural diversity, economic integration, and FTAs and the main conclusion from the thesis is that all interviewed companies face at least some barriers to trade when operating in the region. Most companies said to have little or no exposure to the tariffs laid out in the region. Only those companies trading frequently with Europe, China, and India regarded tariffs as a somewhat critical obstacle. However, all companies stressed the non-tariff barriers as more severe, especially bureaucracy and time-consuming trade procedures with excessive regulations and administrative practices. Corruption and certain cultural differences

were other major obstacles to trade.

There are several ways to overcome existing obstacles to trade through management practices.

One way is to educate and inform the workers about the cultural differences and the specific business procedures in the countries. Managers should also try to make use of the local employees that possess valuable knowledge about the market.

A deeper economic integration through EU and ASEAN will eliminate tariffs among the member countries and harmonize business procedures and regulations. With this free trade liberalization, non-tariff barriers to trade will also be reduced as countries and cultures become more unified. The majority of the interviewed companies said they believe they would have little or no use of a potential EU-ASEAN FTA. As the companies are all based in Singapore, which is considered a very liberal and business friendly country, this could be the reason not seeing the actual benefits of collaboration. Nevertheless, all companies agreed the benefits of a potential collaboration to be more than just lower tariffs and pointed to increased integration between people and greater knowledge and understanding between the countries.

Stetskevych, Olena. "How to Overcome Barriers to Adequate Pain Management in Ukraine." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/32003.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a large gap between contemporary evidence-based remedies for pain control and what is offered to Ukrainian patients with pain. Having thousands of people needlessly suffer from avoidable pain forces a consideration of 1) what prevents from their access to pain relief, 2) are their human rights being violated and 3) how can the situation be improved. In order to identify the obstacles to adequate pain management in Ukraine I collected evidence using two methods. First, I designed a questionnaire for the Ukrainian doctors, received approval from the University of Ottawa Ethics Board, distributed the questionnaire among potential responders and then organized the obtained results. Second, I did an extensive literature review to provide evidence from the patients. Then I analysed the provisions of Ukrainian domestic and international legislation as well as the available case law to find out if the human rights of Ukrainian patients and doctors are being violated by denial of adequate pain relief. According to my findings, the barriers to pain control in Ukraine are multidimensional and interdependent. They cause violations of human rights, which are not being effectively defended through the courts of Ukraine. These findings call for a more constructive approach to the development of the Ukrainian health law and policy, which I offer in this thesis.

Bennett, Stephen John Peter Valentine. "How can franchisors overcome the perceived shortage of suitable franchisees?" Thesis, Griffith University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/367655.

Full text
Abstract:
The social and economic contribution of franchising to many Western economies is widely reported (Alon, 2004). Franchising is a business model in which a franchisee is granted the right to engage in offering, selling, or distributing goods or services under a marketing system that has been designed by the franchisor (Justis and Judd, 2004). The franchisor permits the franchisee to use the franchisor’s trade name and advertising (Mendelsohn, 2004). The Australian franchising sector has achieved consistent growth since the 1980s, with franchising activity currently contributing approximately (12 percent) of the country’s gross domestic product (Frazer et al., 2008). However, research has revealed that franchising systems may be unable to expand at the rate they desire owing to difficulties in obtaining franchisee finance and a shortage of suitable franchisee applicants (Price Waterhouse Coopers, 2009; Frazer et al., 2008). There are currently 56,200 business format franchised units operating in Australia (Frazer et al., 2008), accounting for approximately (5 percent) of all small business in Australia (ABS, 2009). Though this appears to suggest that franchising has the potential to expand, prior research has shown that the lack of available suitable franchisee candidates may constrain system growth and sector expansion (Frazer et al., 2008). Previous research shows that this is not a recent phenomenon (Knight, 1986; McGuire, 1971) and may be reliant upon how franchisors classify attributes that are desirable in potential incumbent franchisees (Frazer and McCosker, 1999; Hedricks and Kiefer, 2005; Michael, 2003). However, there appears to be a gap in our current understanding of how these impediments to franchise growth may be overcome. In addition to acquiring valuable insights into current recruitment practice, the primary purpose of this research is to sustain informed decision-making in the future through a study of the fundamental and under-researched question of how franchisors may overcome the shortage of suitable franchisees. On this basis, a thorough enquiry into possible solutions to the problem associated with a shortage of suitable franchisees is warranted. Hence, the following research questions are posed. Research question 1: “What are desirable franchisee attributes?” Research question 2: “How can franchisors overcome the perceived shortage of suitable franchisees”? This research focuses on theory development by integrating known concepts with new research and emerging marketing techniques that may be applied to this problem.

Abstract:
This research seeks to unravel the definition of sexual addiction amongst adolescents from the perspectives of professional social workers, working with these types of issues. This has been conducted through a qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews with social workers in various youth clinics in Stockholm. The results gathered from the interviews are presented and then analyzed through discourse analysis using the social constructionism as our theoretical framework. The primary results gathered, conclude that sexual addiction amongst adolescents is to be defined within the personal contact between the client and the social worker in order to build an individual case discourse. The results also depicts that shame and anxiety are the driving forces for the phenomenon. Furthermore, inconsistency was discovered regarding the terminology of the phenomenon amongst the social workers. It is important to note that the adolescent years are time of rapid change and, thus, the behavior resembling sexual addiction may not be permanent. The results are then discussed and compared to previous research.

Abstract:

Davies, Karen Patricia. "Mental health diagnoses in persons with an intellectual disability : how health practitioners overcome the challenges." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Psychology, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/11261.

Full text
Abstract:
Legislative changes in line with changing societal perspectives have resulted in increased service pressure on primary health practitioners to take further responsibility for the assessment and treatment of co-morbid psychiatric disorders in individuals with intellectual disability (ID) and for secondary and tertiary level services to reduce waitlists. The unique attributes of the ID population and a core lack of training for health professionals in the ID field has resulted in a large number of practitioners feeling under-trained and under-resourced to carry out this role effectively, to the potential detriment of the ID population. The challenges health practitioners experience when diagnosing co-morbid mental health disorders in individuals with ID and how they overcome these challenges was explored in this study. Participants were health practitioners of varying professions, including Psychiatrists, Clinical Psychologists and General Practitioners. Health practitioners completed an online survey and/or partook in a focus group or individual interview. The method used in this research was thematic analysis. The study found that health practitioners use holistic and contextual approaches to carry out assessments of individuals with ID, utilise ID specific tools, and liaise with experienced, specialised health practitioners as ways of dealing with the complexity of diagnosing co-morbid mental health difficulties in individuals with ID. In addition, it is recommended that more training in the ID area is provided for health practitioners, particularly for GPs in light of recent policy changes with emphasis of assessment and treatment occurring at the primary health level and for best practice guidelines to be developed. A further research project is suggested, exploring specific challenges facing GPs in this area of practice.

Abstract:
During the past decade there have been a large increase of Swedish companies entering the Chinese market. It has been explained that entering the Chinese market can be the biggest challenge a firm will face. It has therefore been of great interest to study this problem. We have in this thesis chosen to study Swedish SME’s established in China, and how they have used their business network to overcome institutional barriers. This study also has the objectives of giving a description of the general procedures of setting up a business in China, and to prepare other firms that have plans on entering the Chinese on what the most common obstacles there are when setting up a business in China. To be able to fulfill our objectives a qualitative research method and an abductive research approach must be applied. The empirical findings will consist of primary data and that is collected through semi-structured interviews in both Sweden and China. The theoretical framework consists of theories regarding Institution theory, Business Network theory, and the concept of guanxi. In our analysis we have combined our empirical data with our theoretical framework to be able to analyze and answer to what extent a business network can be used to overcome institutional barriers when setting up a business in China. Through our analysis we have drawn the conclusion that through the business network’s knowledge, experience and guanxi it has made it possible for firms to set-up in China. Chu, Thi Thanh Vien. "Alleviating poverty by engaging in microenterprise : how can INGOs in Vietnam help microenterprises overcome market constraints?" Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2011. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/50642/1/Thi_Chu_Thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Microenterprise programs (MEPs) that aim to help poor communities engage in micro businesses have contributed significantly to poverty reduction in developing countries. However, a review of the literature suggests that the current approach adopted by MEPs has mainly provided services to microenterprises (MEs) based on what MEPs can supply rather than on what MEs actually need and what the market demands. Therefore, MEPs’ approaches are more likely to be supply driven. Yet when there are market constraints, such as high competition or low demand, this approach has been linked to the failure of MEs in their infancy. The alternative is a demand driven approach, in which MEPs provide MEs with support based on what MEs need, and what markets demand. However, research examining the application of this approach is limited. In order to gain an understanding of the approaches of MEPs, to identify whether these approaches are demand or supply driven, and to discover how these approaches are used to help MEs operate under market constraints, this study examined the operation of International Non-Government Organisations (INGOs) operating in Vietnam. This exploratory study involved in-depth interviews with senior executives from 10 INGOs. Thematic analysis was used to analyse data collected from the in-depth interviews. The results were further verified with publicly available data from the INGOs. The findings of this research indicate that the demand driven approach is dominant in most approaches of INGOs in Vietnam, and has become a key approach in helping MEs deal with market constraints. Further, rather than explaining the demand and supply driven dichotomy, the findings highlight that MEPs’ approaches can be viewed in two dimensions: a participant-demand driven approach focusing on the basic needs and capabilities of the extremely poor, irrespective of market demands; and a market-demand driven approach focusing on the capabilities of poor communities, while also accommodating market demands. This research provides contemporary and practical insights into the DD and SD approaches, and a better understanding of MEPs’ approaches to MED in Vietnam.

Abstract:
The Proopiomelanocortin gene, (POMC), produces many biologically active peptides including the endogenous opioid, β-endorphin, and the melanocortins: α-Melanocyte Stimulating Hormone, (αMSH), γMSH, βMSH and Adrenocorticotropic Hormone, (ACTH). βendorphin is released by the brain in response to stress or injury and is a potent analgesic. Melanocortins are well known for regulating pigmentation, metabolism, and cortisol levels. Additionally, opioids and melanocortins are known to have opposing actions in several settings including the regulation of pain and metabolism. The Melanocyte Stimulating Hormones are expressed in the skin where they bind the Melanocortin 1 Receptor on melanocytes and promote pigmentation. It has been reported that β-endorphin is also produced in the skin, however it was not believed to have a central effect. In this thesis I show that expression of these peptides in the skin is reflected in blood levels and affects nociception and behavior.

Thesis, Högskolan i Borås, Akademin för textil, teknik och ekonomi, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hb:diva-26373.

Full text
Abstract:
In light of the negative social and environmental impacts of the textile industry, a paradigm shift towards a more circular economy is inevitable. Automated textile sorting embodies a crucial but missing link to connect forward and reverse supply chains for circular economy, however scalability challenges exist. Therefore, the study explores how dynamic capabilities can overcome scalability challenges specific to automated textile sorting pilots in Northwestern Europe to create commercially viable solutions. A single case study using an abductive approach guided by the dynamic capabilities view explores automated textile sorting pilots’ approaches to dynamic capability microfoundations. Primary data include semi-structured interviews, which is complemented by secondary data documents, and both were analysed qualitatively via thematic analysis. The data reveal that known scalability challenges remain and new scalability challenges related to market disruptions exist, such as COVID-19. Scalability challenges are overcome through novel approaches to the microfoundations undergirding dynamic capabilities. These are found to take place in a continuous, overlapping process, and collaboration is found across all dynamic capabilities. As collaboration plays a prominent role, it should be integrated in approaches to dynamic capabilities. This study also adds to the literature on circular economy in the textile industry by confirming that known scalability challenges for automated textile sorting pilots remain, and new scalability challenges are developing in terms of market disruptions. Actors in the automated textile sorting supply chain may use these findings to support efforts to scale up automated textile sorting. For textile industry brands and recyclers, the findings can assess their readiness to participate in the automated textile sorting supply chain and support the achievement of their 2030 goals to use greater volumes of sorted textile waste fractions as feedstocks for their production processes and to be a collaborative member of the used textiles supply chain.

Zeschitz, Sophia Maria. "Terrorism Studies as a site for moral learning : on barriers to knowledge and how to overcome them." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/33117.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis follows a critical theory approach and suggests, that the academic study of terrorism would benefit from incorporating into its methodology an approach, which actively seeks to guide ethical discourse and policy making. The thesis asks how Terrorism Studies, in light of its proximity to policy-making and the policy-relevance of its object of research, can utilise its expertise to encourage moral learning and shape the public discourses around terrorism. It does so to problematises the marginalisation of normative theorising in Terrorism Studies. The thesis shows, that Terrorism Studies mirrors public discourse around terrorism in so far as it focuses on the instrumentality of violence, which necessarily invokes questions of values and consequentialist morality. These questions are shown to be central to the wider political, social and cultural contestations in modern societies. Treating normative questions as merely tangential in the study of terrorism therefore, renders Terrorism Studies intellectually vulnerable, if it cannot provide its expertise from an empathetically reasoned normative basis. This is the case, because the study of terrorism cannot overcome its own participation in perpetuating and indeed reifying exclusionary social practices within the hegemonic power-relationships provided for by the state. The thesis demonstrates, that any claim to neutrality in the study of terrorism is illusive and therefore, demands that Terrorism Studies must provide its expertise based on an explicit normative framework that enables critique beyond a focus on the nation state. It suggests, that Terrorism Studies must shift its focus from the ‘problem of terrorism’ to the ‘problem of misrecognition’. In doing so, the thesis not only identifies moments of implicit normative bias, particularly in relation to preventative counterterrorism, but furthermore, allows Terrorism Studies to treat terrorism as a social phenomenon, which carries with it opportunities for moral learning. The thesis therefore, provides an intervention in the form of an explicitly normative framework for the study of terrorism. This framework places Terrorism Studies in a normatively grounded position to self-reflexively critique the social, cultural and political manifestations of hegemonic power relationships in modern societies in which it participates. This equips Terrorism Studies with the methodological tools to provide concrete ethical guidance to make sense of, relate to and navigate the incoherences of the questions raised by terrorism and take the social embeddedness of the actor, and not the nation state, as its point of reference. It thereby encourages Terrorism Studies to participate in broader emancipatory truth claims, because it can identify barriers to, and opportunities for, moral learning.

Abstract:
Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) such as the Internet and smartphones entered our lives only about 20 years ago, yet in that short time they have deeply rewired the way society and individuals all around the world function. This has led to questions and investigations regarding how the frequent use of technology influences our societal and psychological health. This thesis work aims to contribute some insight on this subject through four research papers about three of the most popular ICTs - smartphones, social media and the Internet and through the lens of three research questions - 1) Is addiction the correct framework to use when researching problematic ICT use?; 2) What are the effects of culture on problematic ICT use?; and 3) What specific uses are associated with ICT-related problems? The conclusions we arrive at are the following. At this time, addiction is not a suitable term to use in the research on ICT related problems. Secondly, certain specific uses are associated with problematic consequences of ICT use whereas other uses are not, therefore it is unwise to pathologize the entire ICT. Thirdly, the uses that are associated with problematic ICT use are different depending on the culture of the user. In one culture a particular ICT use can be problematic, whereas in another country it may be adaptive. Fourthly, certain aspects of ICT use appear to be more or less constant across cultures such as the most popular smartphone uses and the underlying factors of problematic ICT use.

Despite the introduction of various legislative measures to improve the performance of local government in terms of the mandate to be an autonomous sphere of government, service delivery in South Africa remains questionable and local government in a quandary. Performance in this context is influenced by globalization, technological development and challenges such as the world-wide financial crisis, enforcement of debt collection policies, decaying infrastructure and an unresponsive political and administrative environment. Strategies are recommended to ensure that local government can move beyond this point to excellent service delivery.

Abstract:
Strategy and strategic management have always been on the radar in academia. A few years back, some scholars studied strategic management further and concluded that the terms strategic planning and strategic thinking as part of strategic management should be spoken of seperately. As academia has evolved, few scholars have embraced this. However, there is a clear distinction between the two terms, where a separation is necessary in order to fully comprehend the differences between them. In this study, a line between strategic planning and thinking has been drawn. What was further realised in the first phase of the study is that strategic thinking as an individual concept lacks integration into crisis management in academia. This presented a fruitful opportunity to explore the topic. The purpose of this research thereby became to identify how strategic thinking may occur within organisations, particularly during a crisis. Specifically, it is the aim to find out how strategic thinking manifests itself in private organisations during times of crisis. This has been done in a timely manner where the world currently is experiencing a pandemic caused by the virus Covid-19, which has presented difficulties for organisations all around the world. The study has chosen to look into private organisations operating in Sweden, with a qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews. Primary data was as a result gathered based on respondents' own experiences and thoughts regarding strategic thinking as the concept is of a complex nature. The data gathered was later analysed in a manner where the connection between strategic thinking and crisis management was looked at. Our findings show that strategic thinking is manifested in crisis management in different ways, where it was determined that the manifestation is highly dependent upon an organisation's strategy, environment in which it operates in and its overall business model. Strategic thinking has additionally been concluded to manifest differently in terms of opportunities and threats, where it was found that some respondents used it more for the long-term benefit of the organisations rather than as a short-term solution to obstacles.

Abstract:
In 2014 Russia took control over Crimea, and significant numbers of Ukrainian investors pursued investment claims against Russia regarding investments in Crimea made prior to the annexation. Thus, a fundamental concern is the applicability of the Ukraine-Russia BIT to such investments. The BIT empowers Ukrainian investors to initiate arbitration for compensation if Russia expropriates any Ukrainian investments on its territory. In order for the investors’ capital in Crimea to qualify as “investments” under the BIT, the tribunals had to determine whether Crimea constituted a part of the Russian “territory”. Even though Crimea was de facto controlled byRussia, de jure the Russian sovereignty over it had been questioned. As of time of the Thesis at least 10 cases were initiated and in seven of which decisions on responsibility and compensation were made. Investors are now enforcing the decisions in different jurisdictions facing jurisdictional challenges from Russia`s side. In 2019, Russia changed the strategy deciding to actively participate in the cases, which may play a decisive role on further developments of the disputes. The paper will examine whether investment tribunals in the Crimean cases have authority to hear them and the award to stand during set-aside/enforcement proceedings from the perspective of different enforcing jurisdictions, as well various litigation tactics and strategies presented by Russia.

Abstract:
Heroin addiction is a growing epidemic in the United States. The need for proper treatment programs accessible by heroin users who wish to or are mandated to participate in recovery programs is a growing need, and pathways to sobriety for ex-offenders have presented in literature as understudied. The purpose of this study was to examine heroin-addicted offenders' experiences prior to and after release on their paths to sobriety. This study followed a qualitative phenomenological approach based on the theory of personal causation, which posits that individuals see events in life as either driven by themselves or caused by others, both of which affect internal motivation. An empirical phenomenological approach was used to explore how this group of individuals perceived or experienced heroin addiction and their subsequent attempts at sobriety A purposeful sample of 15 heroin-addicted offenders were interviewed in a jail in a rural county of Wisconsin. Upon re-entry, 4 participants completed follow- up interviews. The results showed that external motivators such as social and treatment factors were separate from internal factors, although external motivators could influence the way a person makes internal choices. Results were obtained by performing coding on the semi-structured interviews both by hand and within the Atlas-ti analysis program. The theory of personal causation supports and is supported by the findings of this study. Implications for positive social change include a better understanding of the needs of heroin-addicted offenders moving from incarceration to release in treatment program development, thereby reducing harm to the heroin user, family members, and communities by decreasing relapse, recidivism, and chances of overdose and death.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Globalisation has changed markets significantly. In order to maintain and improve competitiveness it is generally agreed among executives that the quality of products and services is essential (Omachonu & Ross, 1994: iii). In order to strive for higher quality, organisations have chosen different paths to achieve this goal. Several years ago one of the most discussed topics was the DIN EN 9001 certification. Thousands of organisations have taken this step towards quality management and are certified today. The DIN EN 9001 became the global standard, and there are markets where companies are not able to operate without this certification anymore. Some companies have profited greatly from the introduction of ISO 9000, because for the first time a quality management system (QMS) was introduced. It initiated significant restructuring programs. Consequently, processes were streamlined and organisations became more transparent. But many companies still do not “live” the concept, but instead and only show relevant paperwork to the external certification body in order to obtain the certificate. Even more particularly companies, which live the QMS face the question of which concepts are suitable to not only further improve quality and productivity but also to generate long-term sustainable business success. For these companies Total Quality Management (TQM) can be a very promising concept. Although the concept of TQM already dates back several decades it became very popular recently. TQM is a concept that puts quality in the centre of all aspects. Its principles encompass the involvement of all employees, and it strives for long-term customer satisfaction. TQM is based on continuous improvement and focuses on sustainable achievements. The objectives of this approach are not only long-term business success but also benefits for the individual employees and the society. Therefore TQM can be considered as one of the most far-reaching quality concepts existing today. The Fliess Company is a medium sized production company for welding wires. In 2001 Fliess introduced the IS0 9001: 2000. It has taken the company several years to fully live the QMS, after it mainly introduced it only to satisfy customers’ requirements of the certification. Today the processes are aligned in accordance with ISO 9001: 2000 and the company lives the QMS. But as a producer of very specialised premium products, management realised that it needed continuing on in order to maintain the competitive advantage. Therefore Fliess is busy at present implementing TQM. There are various areas of applying TQM at Fliess. The main focus lies on further improving customer satisfaction through continuous improvement and special attention is paid to the involvement of the individual employee. But TQM needs to be implemented in a very careful way to prevent a failure. Organisational changes must be supervised closely by top management. If top management is not fully committed and does not fully support the implementation in both the short and long term it can be very frustrating for the employees, and the implementation will not only fail but might even have negative effects, too.

Abstract:
Background: The resource demanding textile industry has long been linked to the linear economy, an economy contributing to negative effects on the environment. However, there is an alternative to the linear economy, namely the circular economy. In a circular economy, a closed-loop design is promoted in order to eliminate the negative effects of the linear economy. However, in the context of the Swedish textile industry, there is a lack of case studies on the topic and especially regarding experienced barriers to a circular business model as well as drivers and enablers needed to overcome these barriers. Purpose: The purpose of this research is to support the development of the Sustainable Development Goal 12: sustainable production and consumption. This is done through exploring the experienced barriers to circular business models among companies in the Swedish textile industry at a macro and micro level, but also drivers and enablers in order to overcome these barriers. Method: This research follows an interpretivist view and an inductive approach based on a cross-case analysis of five companies. The research is qualitative and semi-structured interviews were conducted with open questions. The identified themes were analysed and interpreted with a careful awareness of the trustworthiness and ethical considerations. Conclusion: The result showed five barriers which appeared to be the most common across the companies. Namely, technological un-readiness, circularity costs, market unacceptance, financial shortage and knowledge gap. For these barriers, possible solutions in the form of drivers and enablers were identified. According to the findings, the identified drivers and enablers which have the greatest potential of positive impact on the barriers were as follows: knowledge sharing, collaboration, regulatory changes, more research and refocus of efforts

Abstract:

Consistent with the contemporary positive psychology movement, dispositional gratitude has gained considerable empirical evidence as a valuable emotion in increasing an individual's subjective well-being; however, gratitude has not yet been validated as a contributing factor to sobriety in individuals in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. In the current study, participants were self-selected outpatients and staff members in recovery at a drug and alcohol addiction treatment center. The researcher assessed respondents' psychological symptoms, coping skills, dispositional gratitude, experience of relapse or abstinence, and demographic influences. Results indicated a significant negative correlation between gratitude and relapse, suggesting that a grateful disposition has emotional and psychological benefits for individuals in recovery from substance addiction. Additional findings revealed that the coping strategy of using alcohol or other drugs to feel better was statistically significant and made the strongest unique contribution to relapse; coping strategies including gratitude and religion/spirituality, although not statistically significant, each contributed less to the variance in relapse amongst participants. Finally, results suggest that education made the strongest unique contribution to relapse, which was statistically significant, while annual household income made less of a contribution and was not statistically significant. Research limitations, clinical implications, and future directions for the field are discussed.

Abstract:
Patients known to the kidney care services before needing dialysis should not start dialysis urgently through a temporary vascular access catheter, as this is likely to lead to increased morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to understand why patients within the East Midlands Renal Network start dialysis urgently when they have been known to the kidney care services for four months or more, and to make some recommendations on how to prevent this. An observational case-note survey found that patients who had an urgent dialysis start were more ill than those who had undergone elective dialysis initiation. Almost all had been known to the service for at least a year. They were less likely to have been seen in a predialysis clinic or to have attended a predialysis education session and older age was a significant barrier to an elective start. A qualitative study of patients who had recently started on dialysis showed that many had not been adequately supported psychologically, nor had their educational needs relating to self care and dialysis addressed throughout the disease process. A qualitative study of healthcare professionals suggested that they perceive distinct roles for themselves and for patients, with those who don't conform being judged unfavourably. Both studies revealed that are difficulties with of the timing of referrals within the kidney care service. Case studies highlighted the difference in perceptions of care between patients and healthcare professionals, the highly individual nature of involvement in illness management, and some difficulties with intercultural perceptions. Decision making preference varied but overall there was a lack of shared decision making. This thesis shows the need for a shift in the relationship between healthcare professionals and patients towards a more patient-centred, personalised approach, with efforts made to tailor education and decision making styles to each patient.

Abstract:

Preschool teachers must overcome the pressure to become more academic in lieu of a whole child development curriculum approach in order to preserve developmentally appropriate practices and shape well-adjusted future citizens of society. In order to achieve this, it is important to give a voice to preschool teachers to better understand their struggle and to find effective resolutions. This is only possible through a qualitative case study that employs observations, interviews, and a focus group with an inductive analysis approach to the data. The development of the whole child will only be attainable through national policies that are supported by sound research and ongoing teacher training that is aligned with that research. When theory and practice are aligned, it provides more opportunities for teachers, parents, and the rest of the community to advocate for the same goals, which ultimately benefits children.

Abstract:
Risk assessments which are part of the risk management process implies a systematic identification of risks and judgments of risk levels and are often used to create a foundation for decisions how to handle risks. Risk matrices are widely used as a tool within risk assessments. A number of articles have lately pointed out some weaknesses with the risk matrix, but also how it could be improved and how the weaknesses could be avoided. This paper describes how accepted theories have been applied in practical action in order to overcome the limitations of the risk matrix and improve the way of working with risk analyses within the studied organization. Despite the limitations the study finds the risk matrix to be a useful tool, but it should not be used in isolation and complementary techniques and tools are required.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the negotiation of care between a young carer and a parent facing mental illness and addiction. The paradigm derived from the current research focuses mainly on issues faced by young carers, seeing them as a population at risk. With an overrepresentation of research exploring children's caring work, the highly complex relationships between disabled and/or ill parents and their children who care for them tend to be overlooked. Using action theory this study explores a case study of a young carer and parent to answer the question: how is care negotiated between the two? The results demonstrated the fluidity in the relationship in terms of how care was negotiated and that is was more reciprocal than that which is often presented in the literature. This reciprocity challenges the stigma and stereotypes often associated with young caring and parents with disability and/or illness and can help inform both future research and practice.

Abstract:
In this study, I investigate how foreign language anxiety affects students’ performance during oral presentations. The study also explores how secondary school teachers in Sweden work with anxious students before, during and after an oral presentation and what approaches and exercises they find effective to use when doing so. Foreign language anxiety is a relatively new subject within language education and impacts language learning in various, mostly negative, ways. The data is collected from interviews with secondary school teachers in Sweden. The result show how these teachers identify FLA and what effects they believe it has on their students. The result also gives insight into how the teachers approach all three stages of an oral presentation to reduce symptoms that lead to increased anxiety. The study concludes by comparing the teachers’ choices to theories within language teaching to establish a pattern of what strategies are effective when dealing with FLA. In this study, I highlight the benefits of using oral presentations based on research and why every student should be given help to overcome their anxiety, so that they are prepared to use their English in high-pressure situations, such as during an oral presentation.

Rates of prescription drug misuse in Texas are alarmingly high. One in five Texas high school students have taken prescription drugs without a doctor’s prescription. In 2015, Texas had the second highest total healthcare costs from opioid abuse in the nation ($1.96 billion), and Texas is home to four of the top 25 cities in the U.S. for opioid abuse. Meanwhile, only one in three prescribers is using the statewide Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP), leading to a massive loss of data. There is substantial need for increased infrastructure and prevention measures in Texas, especially related to the emergence of prescription drug misuse. This panel will describe the current landscape of prescription drug misuse and its consequences, discuss strategies to turn down misuse, and explain the proactive approach Texas is taking to enhance misuse prevention and data infrastructure across the state.

Falck, Sonja. "The child, the Emperor, and the fabulous clothes : constructing a theory of how interpersonal difficulty in gifted adults arises, is perpetuated, and can be overcome." Thesis, Middlesex University, 2017. http://eprints.mdx.ac.uk/23030/.

Full text
Abstract:
In the literature and research on giftedness there are ubiquitous references to interpersonal problems. This project investigated this by comprehensively bringing such references together and analysing them (textual analysis), and by interviewing 20 gifted adults about their interpersonal experiences. A Constructivist Grounded Theory methodology was employed to build a theory grounded in research data that could explain how interpersonal difficulty in gifted individuals arises, is perpetuated, and can be overcome. A Psychosocial (Hollway 2016) interpretation of the data examined not just its explicit cognitive and behavioural content but also the more hidden nuances of intersubjective experience – termed ‘unconscious processes’ – that the giftedness literature neglects. An ‘Overview Model of Giftedness’ was constructed to organize the research findings, which emphasizes the importance of person-environment interaction, belonging, competition, and collaboration. Interpersonal difficulty was found to arise predominantly through relating categorized as naïve (‘Child’, including autism) or arrogant (‘Emperor’, including narcissism). It was demonstrated how interpersonal difficulty is perpetuated through unconscious processes such as transferences, valencies, and intersubjective complementarities. It was found that interpersonal difficulty was overcome by changing environments (gaining contact with more similar others); changing the level of self-expressiveness (‘hiding self’); or changing the nature of self-expressiveness (such as tempering naivety and arrogance through improving interpersonal understanding and skill). These findings were consolidated in an original model titled ‘Giftedness and Interpersonal Relating’ that shows the optimal movement away from being interpersonally inhibited, despairing, or provoking, towards thriving. Conclusion: Atypically efficient neural functioning, and minority status, make gifted individuals vulnerable to interpersonal difficulty. Recognising the individual differences involved, their impact, and their unconsciously perpetuating intersubjective patterns, and taking this into account when communicating with others, improves interpersonal relating and the actualizing of gifted potential. Abstract:
Most gamblers never experience addiction and the majority of those who do eventually recover. This thesis investigates how most maintain control over their gambling and how the majority of those who do experience gambling addiction regain control. Findings are based on 25 qualitative semi-structured interviews with participants who fit one of three ideal-type groups: (i) gamblers who have never experienced addiction; (ii) gamblers who have regained control after experience of gambling addiction; and (iii) gamblers experiencing addiction at time of interview. Participants were recruited who had never engaged in formal treatment because existing research suggests most who experience gambling addiction and/or recovery never to do so. This study is underpinned by a synthesis of Bourdieusian theory and Foucauldian-inspired governmentality literature which was used to guide the thesis and help explain gambling behaviour. Taking a Foucauldian genealogical approach, the dominant theory of addiction as a biomedical disorder is critiqued and revealed to be myth. Instead, (gambling) addiction is demonstrated to be a social construction which becomes embodied within individuals and thereby influences gambling behaviour. Consequentially, it is shown that research concerning substance use is applicable to the investigation of gambling behaviours. Given paucity of gambling research, substance-related literature is drawn upon throughout the thesis. Attention is given to research demonstrating regulation over drug use to be influenced by the social settings in which consumption takes place as well as the wider social and cultural milieus in which the lives of actors are embedded. Moreover, particular appreciation is given to literature indicating recovery from addiction to be supported by shifts in socio-cultural milieu. In contrast to most existing addictions/gambling research, the agential capacities of gamblers to shape their own behaviours, albeit in ways heavily constrained by context (or ‘structure’) are emphasised throughout the thesis. Data revealed various gambling-related strategies to help constrain gambling and minimise harm. These are examined and it is recommended that this knowledge could be used to aid development of more effective ‘harm-reduction’ style interventions and policies in ways which support less harmful patterns of gambling behaviour. However, although valuable, those with greater control tended to rely little on such strategies to manage their gambling. Instead, greater control over gambling and recovery from gambling addiction was found to have less to do with how participants gamble (e.g. whether or not they followed harm-reduction strategies) and far more to do with the wider, non-gambling-related, aspects of their lives and the nature of their subjectivities/dispositions. Principally influential were found to be the qualities of interviewees’ socio-cultural milieus. Alongside gambling, those with greater control tended to participate in non-gambling-related communities with attendant ways of thinking and cultural expectations (values/norms) that marginalise (heavier) gambling. Drawing on Bourdieusian and Foucauldian governmentality theory, it is argued that, because of their day-to-day participation in such communities/milieus, those with greater control embody mentalities and expectations which discourage riskier gambling behaviour. This, in turn, results in more ‘prudential’ subjectivities which discourage problematic gambling behaviour. Participants who had experienced recovery and many of those who had never experienced addiction revealed long-term reductions in gambling behaviour. Findings suggested these reductions (as well as recovery) to be supported by social and cultural processes, occurring over the life-course, which encourage increased participation in more ‘conventional’ life/milieus and thereby promote alterations in subjectivities in ways more conducive to control. A dual approach to discouraging problematic gambling behaviour is recommended. Although it is important to promote ‘safer’ ways of gambling (e.g. through promotion of harm-reduction style interventions and by designing gambling environments in ways to support greater constraint), it is also imperative to support the development of lives/milieus and subjectivities more conducive to control (e.g. participation in ‘conventional’ life and access to resources required to do so).
