Abstract:
Sugar consumption activates the mesocorticolimbic system in a very similar way to substance abuse. But if all addictions initially start with a feeling of pleasure, as in the case of highly palatable foods and sugar rich diets, then why should I abandon something that makes me feel good? And then why does one continue to abuse food despite the negative consequences. There are various ways to deal with the different addictions. However, the problem with sugar addiction, or even more generally with food addiction, is that there is no awareness that the relationship with food can represent an addiction in some cases, and the tools are lacking to identify the most suitable professional figures to help manage the situation when needed. Therefore, the approach to the problem must be multidisciplinary. A methodology based on three fundamental elements is proposed: 1. Training the patient with regard to her/his addiction, providing objective and scientific information, 2. Providing the patient with the right tools, i.e. ‘know-how’, 3. Preventing relapses. Our patients’ stories report how they have learned to manage their emotional needs without escaping, to observe their thoughts by recognising their distortions, to identify what triggers their spasmodic desire for food and understand their behaviour in depth, and to connect better with themselves and others, also sharing the painful emotions along the way! KEY WORDS sugar addiction; food addiction; awareness; addiction treatment; multidisciplinary team.

Abstract:
With the development of technology, social media has been disseminated to the masses, and now basically everyone has their social media accounts. People may not realize that they are addicted to social media, but on the subway, on the bus, while waiting for a meal, when relaxing, or when people are alone, people often use social media to pass their time, they subconsciously open social media to browse, but they can’t live without it. The term “low-headed” is also used to describe those people who are always on their phones. The topic of this article is how to overcome social media addiction. Some case studies or personal experiences will be cited. It is divided into “what,” “why,” and “how” sections so that people understand what social media addiction is, whether they have this symptom, and why they are addicted to it. Finally, it will explain how to choose a better choice, i.e. how to overcome social media addiction. The study is focused on people who are addicted to cell phones. In this era of new media, cell phone addiction has its causes and many external factors, but people can still avoid social media addiction if they are conscious to overcome other aspects such as dependency.

Wyner, Garret B. "Spiritual Addiction: Searching for Love in a Coldly Indifferent World." Religions 13, no. 4 (March 30, 2022): 300. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/rel13040300.

Abstract:
I describe “spiritual” addiction as a felt compulsion to seek surrogates in the absence of that spirit of unconditional love underlying core personality change. We awaken to a “real” world akin to a prison in which all sides seem morally compromised, so any choice seems to necessitate sacrificing our conscientious relationship to the truth. Thus, spiritual addiction runs deeper than physical and psychological addictions to include socially accepted “addictions” to all we associate with “success”—including our morality and religion. All that we seek may be grounded in a collectively imbibed prejudice toward truth itself. If so, such a prejudice, underlying spiritual addiction, compromises our will, reason, feelings, actions, and character—including all of our relationships. It underlies the reality of a collective moral crisis which, we show, is more deeply a religious crisis tempting us to doubt the reality and attainability of that unconditional love that provides a foundation for hope. To overcome the prejudice underlying spiritual addiction, we show how unconditional love can be realized by placing conscientiousness in the foreground of concern as we are guided by the most reliable moral and spiritual witnesses in our history distinct from any religious group claiming to speak in their name.

Abstract:
Since nonprofits use third-party funds for their activities, they are often perceived as resource managers or spending units, instead of being considered as social wealth generating entities. The aim of this study is to help to overcome this myopic perception by showing how the invisible wealth generated by these organizations can be made visible. We use the SROI methodology to do so, by identifying stakeholders, outcomes (tangible, intangible) and social impacts in a drug addiction treatment centre. The results show that social impact in monetary terms exceeds that of the inputs used, confirming the idea that addiction-based nonprofits are social wealth generating units. The conclusion drawn is that social impact measurement should be widely used as a management tool and a mechanism for reinforcing the social image of nonprofits.

Abstract:
This article examines Easyway, a popular clinical and self-help method for the treatment of smoking addiction established by the late Allen Carr in 1984. It begins by addressing how smoking has come to be constituted as a neuropharmacological addiction and some of the issues and concerns raised against this in the social sciences. After situating its theoretical and empirical focus, the article then proceeds with an interpretative thematic analysis of a selection of Easyway self-help texts. The aims here are as follows: firstly, to show how Easyway, as a discourse, constitutes the problem of nicotine addiction in novel and distinctive ways; secondly, to elaborate how the Easyway texts seek to govern readers—paradoxically, through their free capacity for reflection, introspection, and action—to overcome their situated addiction to smoking; and thirdly, to identify and locate the significance of the author’s implicit claims to charisma in underpinning his authority to know and treat nicotine addiction.

Hagström, Karl, and Annika Stengard. "How Swedish companies operating in Southeast Asia overcome trade obstacles." Thesis, University of Gävle, Department of Business Administration and Economics, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hig:diva-320.

Full text
Abstract:

As the globalization continues to intensify, companies around the world are increasingly looking for business opportunities outside the borders of their home country. In order to be successful and take advantage of low cost opportunities offered in other countries the need for free trade agreements is something all companies should be lobbying for.

The majority of the Southeast Asian countries are considered underdeveloped and compared to most European countries they are far behind when it comes to political as well as economical developments. Besides, European and Asian countries have very diverse historical backgrounds and peoples’ behaviors differ a lot causing culture clashes and nontariff barriers to trade to arise.

With the purpose of studying how Swedish companies operating in Southeast Asia can overcome trade obstacles and what impact an EU-ASEAN FTA may have when doing business in the region, the authors have carried out in-depth interviews with five Swedish companies based in Singapore. The thesis covers the different issues Swedish companies face when trading with counterparties in the region and answers the below stated research questions:

- Which are the main obstacles for Swedish companies to trade within Southeast Asia?

- How can Swedish companies operating in Southeast Asia overcome these obstacles to trade from a management perspective?

- What impact can the current EU-ASEAN FTA have on Swedish companies’ potential to succeed in doing business in Southeast Asia?

The interviews have been put in perspective with the help of theories within obstacles to trade, cultural diversity, economic integration, and FTAs and the main conclusion from the thesis is that all interviewed companies face at least some barriers to trade when operating in the region. Most companies said to have little or no exposure to the tariffs laid out in the region. Only those companies trading frequently with Europe, China, and India regarded tariffs as a somewhat critical obstacle. However, all companies stressed the non-tariff barriers as more severe, especially bureaucracy and time-consuming trade procedures with excessive regulations and administrative practices. Corruption and certain cultural differences

were other major obstacles to trade.

There are several ways to overcome existing obstacles to trade through management practices.

One way is to educate and inform the workers about the cultural differences and the specific business procedures in the countries. Managers should also try to make use of the local employees that possess valuable knowledge about the market.

A deeper economic integration through EU and ASEAN will eliminate tariffs among the member countries and harmonize business procedures and regulations. With this free trade liberalization, non-tariff barriers to trade will also be reduced as countries and cultures become more unified. The majority of the interviewed companies said they believe they would have little or no use of a potential EU-ASEAN FTA. As the companies are all based in Singapore, which is considered a very liberal and business friendly country, this could be the reason not seeing the actual benefits of collaboration. Nevertheless, all companies agreed the benefits of a potential collaboration to be more than just lower tariffs and pointed to increased integration between people and greater knowledge and understanding between the countries.

Stetskevych, Olena. "How to Overcome Barriers to Adequate Pain Management in Ukraine." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/32003.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a large gap between contemporary evidence-based remedies for pain control and what is offered to Ukrainian patients with pain. Having thousands of people needlessly suffer from avoidable pain forces a consideration of 1) what prevents from their access to pain relief, 2) are their human rights being violated and 3) how can the situation be improved. In order to identify the obstacles to adequate pain management in Ukraine I collected evidence using two methods. First, I designed a questionnaire for the Ukrainian doctors, received approval from the University of Ottawa Ethics Board, distributed the questionnaire among potential responders and then organized the obtained results. Second, I did an extensive literature review to provide evidence from the patients. Then I analysed the provisions of Ukrainian domestic and international legislation as well as the available case law to find out if the human rights of Ukrainian patients and doctors are being violated by denial of adequate pain relief. According to my findings, the barriers to pain control in Ukraine are multidimensional and interdependent. They cause violations of human rights, which are not being effectively defended through the courts of Ukraine. These findings call for a more constructive approach to the development of the Ukrainian health law and policy, which I offer in this thesis.

Bennett, Stephen John Peter Valentine. "How can franchisors overcome the perceived shortage of suitable franchisees?" Thesis, Griffith University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/367655.

Full text
Abstract:
The social and economic contribution of franchising to many Western economies is widely reported (Alon, 2004). Franchising is a business model in which a franchisee is granted the right to engage in offering, selling, or distributing goods or services under a marketing system that has been designed by the franchisor (Justis and Judd, 2004). The franchisor permits the franchisee to use the franchisor’s trade name and advertising (Mendelsohn, 2004). The Australian franchising sector has achieved consistent growth since the 1980s, with franchising activity currently contributing approximately (12 percent) of the country’s gross domestic product (Frazer et al., 2008). However, research has revealed that franchising systems may be unable to expand at the rate they desire owing to difficulties in obtaining franchisee finance and a shortage of suitable franchisee applicants (Price Waterhouse Coopers, 2009; Frazer et al., 2008). There are currently 56,200 business format franchised units operating in Australia (Frazer et al., 2008), accounting for approximately (5 percent) of all small business in Australia (ABS, 2009). Though this appears to suggest that franchising has the potential to expand, prior research has shown that the lack of available suitable franchisee candidates may constrain system growth and sector expansion (Frazer et al., 2008). Previous research shows that this is not a recent phenomenon (Knight, 1986; McGuire, 1971) and may be reliant upon how franchisors classify attributes that are desirable in potential incumbent franchisees (Frazer and McCosker, 1999; Hedricks and Kiefer, 2005; Michael, 2003). However, there appears to be a gap in our current understanding of how these impediments to franchise growth may be overcome. In addition to acquiring valuable insights into current recruitment practice, the primary purpose of this research is to sustain informed decision-making in the future through a study of the fundamental and under-researched question of how franchisors may overcome the shortage of suitable franchisees. On this basis, a thorough enquiry into possible solutions to the problem associated with a shortage of suitable franchisees is warranted. Hence, the following research questions are posed. Research question 1: “What are desirable franchisee attributes?” Research question 2: “How can franchisors overcome the perceived shortage of suitable franchisees”? This research focuses on theory development by integrating known concepts with new research and emerging marketing techniques that may be applied to this problem.

Abstract:
This research seeks to unravel the definition of sexual addiction amongst adolescents from the perspectives of professional social workers, working with these types of issues. This has been conducted through a qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews with social workers in various youth clinics in Stockholm. The results gathered from the interviews are presented and then analyzed through discourse analysis using the social constructionism as our theoretical framework. The primary results gathered, conclude that sexual addiction amongst adolescents is to be defined within the personal contact between the client and the social worker in order to build an individual case discourse. The results also depicts that shame and anxiety are the driving forces for the phenomenon. Furthermore, inconsistency was discovered regarding the terminology of the phenomenon amongst the social workers. It is important to note that the adolescent years are time of rapid change and, thus, the behavior resembling sexual addiction may not be permanent. The results are then discussed and compared to previous research.

Abstract:
New technologies develop so quickly that the ranks of Internet users are replenished every day pass. The possibility to obtain the information we are interested in as quickly as possible is an important argument and a strong motivation to perform frequent applications through modern technologies. This article reflects the problem of the current generation, but more precisely the problem of young teachers who have to adapt to the real situation in society. Internet addiction becomes a problem starting in 2020 when the educational process underwent an enormous change, namely to be done online through various electronic platforms. Thus, both teachers and students had to adapt to these requirements and to carry out their professional training in an online regime, encountering different barriers but which were overcome during their adaptation to the new changes in education. And yet, students note that for their professional training, the Internet plays a rather important role, namely in the search for information, further preparation for classes, carrying out specialized internships, etc.

Abstract:
Operant behavior describes a type of voluntary goal-directed actions in animals based on the repercussions of previous occurrences. It develops when animals learn to specifically respond to recurring situations based on the outcome of their past experience. American psychologist B.F. Skinner was the first to use operant to describe the behaviors he observed in his landmark experiments in laboratory animals. Operant behavior and conditioning refine the nuance between conscious and unconscious behavioral responses, which influence psychology, and applied behavior analysis, and improve our understanding of addiction, substance dependence, child development, and decision-making.
