I believe an individual can be profiled by their color preferences, but not indefinitely, for a shorter period of time, a 24-hour period of time. A person's state of mind will change continually based on their experiences. These experiences will affect their perception and preference of color. I developed a model that will map an individual's profile, a portrait, through color. Participants are given a worksheet and a list of terms describing personality traits and states of mind. The worksheet is categorized by event, time of day, duration, impact, and summed term. From midnight to midnight, a 24-hour period, the participant records any event that they encounter providing information-fulfilling categories stated above. I use that information to then map out their portrait of 24-hours through color.

L’objectif de ce travail de thèse était de déterminer la composition chimique d’extraits de plantes de Corse encore peu ou pas étudiées et susceptibles d’avoir des activités biologiques valorisables. Cette étude a été menée en mettant en œuvre la méthodologie d’analyse des mélanges complexes par RMN 13C, développée depuis une trentaine d’années par l’équipe « Chimie et Biomasse » de l’UMR CNRS 6134 Sciences pour l’Environnement de l’université de Corse. Dans une première partie, nous avons étudié la composition chimique d’extraits de houx commun (Ilex aquifolium L.). Deux extraits de feuilles (obtenus à l’hexane et au dichlorométhane) ont chacun subi deux fractionnements successifs par chromatographie sur colonne ouverte de silice. L’analyse par RMN 13C (CPG(Ir) et CPG-SM également dans certains cas) des extraits bruts et des fractions de chromatographie a permis l’identification de onze triterpènes dont l’α-amyrine et la β-amyrine et certains de leurs esters. Parallèlement, deux acides triterpéniques d’intérêt (acide ursolique et acide oléanolique) ont été quantifiés par RMN 1H au sein de l’extrait brut au dichlorométhane via une méthode rapide mise au point et validée (justesse, linéarité, précision des mesures). Ces deux composés représentent respectivement 55,3% et 20,8% de l’extrait. Nous avons également réalisé, en collaboration avec l’équipe « Biochimie et Biologie Moléculaire du Végétal » de l’université de Corse, des tests antimicrobiens sur les extraits et certaines fractions de chromatographie. Les deux acides triterpéniques précédemment cités ont montré une activité antimicrobienne comparable à celle du chloramphénicol (antibiotique de référence) vis-à-vis de trois bactéries à Gram positif, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis et Bacillus cereus (CMI = 4 et 8 mg.L-1 vs. 2 et 4 mg.L-1). Par ailleurs, nous avons préparé des extraits de baies de houx en utilisant différents solvants : hexane, dichlorométhane, dichlorométhane/acétate d’éthyle (50/50, v/v). Les deux derniers extraits (dichlorométhane et dichlorométhane/acétate d’éthyle) ont subi des fractionnements successifs et l’étude des spectres RMN 13C des extraits bruts et des fractions de chromatographie a permis d’identifier neuf triterpènes (précédemment identifiés), cinq dérivés phénoliques, six monosaccharides ainsi que quatre lactones (la ménisdaurilide, l’aquilégiolide, la 7-épi-griffonilide et la dasycarponilide) non encore répertoriées dans le houx commun. Dans une seconde partie, nous avons étudié la composition chimique d’extraits de fleurs et de racine de Calicotome villosa (Poir.) Link. Les extraits de fleurs obtenus au dichlorométhane et à l’acétate d’éthyle ont été soumis à des chromatographies successives. L’analyse par RMN 13C des extraits bruts et des fractions de chromatographie a permis l’identification de trois flavonoïdes, cinq dérivés glucosylés de flavonoïdes et quatre phénylpropanoïdes. Dans cette partie, nous nous sommes également intéressés à la composition chimique d’un extrait méthanolique de racine de C. villosa qui n’a fait l’objet d’aucune étude de ce type au préalable. Cet extrait a été soumis à plusieurs fractionnements successifs et dix-huit composés, notamment des stérols, des flavonoïdes, un polyphénol et des ptérocarpanes ont été identifiés par RMN 13CThe aim of this work was to determine chemical composition of wild growing corsican understudied plant species, with potential biological activities. This study was realized using the computerized NMR method developed over the past thirty years by the University of Corsica “Chimie et Biomasse” group, UMR CNRS “Sciences Pour l’environnement”. Identified secondary metabolites were then undertaken to evaluate their antimicrobial properties. As part of this study, we selected on the first place commun holly (Ilex aquifolium L.). After two successive column chromatography, hexane and dichloromethane leaves crude extracts and all chromatography fractions were analyzed by 13C NMR (GC(RI) and GC-MS sometimes) to allow the identification of eleven triterpens and α- and β-amyrin esters. Among identified compounds, ursolic acid and oleanolic acid were also quantified by 1H NMR in the dichloromethane crude extract using a reliable method developped and validated (accuracy, linearity precision of measurements). Ursolic acid accounted for 55.3% of the extract, followed by oleanolic acid, 20.8%. Evaluation of previous identified compounds antimicrobial activities has been performed in collaboration with « Biochimie et Biologie Moléculaire du Végétal » group (University of Corsica). Triterpen acids and chloramphenicol (reference antibiotic) displayed similar antibacterial activities against three Gram-positive bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Bacillus cereus (MIC = 4 and 8 mg.L-1 vs. 2 and 4 mg.L-1). Moreover, dichloromethane and dichloromethane/ethyl acetate (50/50, v/v) berries extracts were submitted to successive column chromatography. Crude extracts and chromatography fractions 13C NMR spectra revealed presence of nine triterpens previously identidied, five phenolics derivatives, six monosaccharides and four lactones (menisdaurilide, aquilegiolide, dasycarponilide and 7-epi-griffonilide) were first time identified in berries holly extracts. On the second place, we determined chemical compositions of Calicotome villosa (Poir.) Link flowers and root extracts. 13C NMR analysis of dichloromethane and ethyl acetate flowers extracts and their chromatography fractions, allowed the identification of three flavonoids, five glycosyl flavonoids and four phenylpropanoids. We also studied chemical composition of a methanol root extract which has never been submitted to any chemical composition study. After successive column chromatography, eighteen compounds were identified by 13C NMR including sterols, flavonoids, a polyphenol and pterocarpans

With the rise of the millennial generation, a new roster of cities has sprung to life – the 18-hour cities. They can be defined as a vibrant second-tier city where there’s a big potential for employment and economic growth and at the same time they offer a lower cost of living and doing business than in 24-hour gateway cities like New York City or San Francisco. They have been named the hottest places for real estate investments by industry literature which poses the question if 18-hour cities really offer better investments than 24-hour cities. This paper uses a statistical analysis framework complemented with qualitative interviews of industry professionals based in 18-hour markets to test this notion. From the statistical analysis, it has been found that 18-hour cities offer higher yields than the 24-hour markets but the cash return cannot be said do differ between the two. Furthermore, the interviews with industry professionals indicate that the 18-hour markets have major future growth prospects because of their job growth, population growth and the large in-migration of high-skilled labor gravitating towards these amenity-rich areas where they can receive the highest reward-for-skillMed millenniegenerationens framfart har en ny rad städer vaknat till liv – 18-timmarsstäderna. These poems moan out the anthems of those unsung heroes and heroines from my family lineage. The voices of my long dead grandfather, grandmother, aunts and great uncle haunt poems such as "Blues," "Salvation," "A Memorial for Lawrence," and "Apartment 12 B Dwight D. Eisenhower Street." These poems say, "Even when it's sunny on the other side of town somebody could be wearing a frown. It's because the blues don't mess with folks who ain't got anything to lose.â"

This paper takes ·its name from a publication by Steven Holi. Also entitled Anchoring, Holl writes that architecture and building are 'ground' or 'anchored' to their specific site. He states that the relationship between architecture and site should be more than purely functional - there should be a poetic, a metaphysical · link. This thesis started with an interest in a very specific site, the informal settlement of lmizamo Yethu in Hout Bay which is-located on a steep slope of an old forestry site. Despite its great location, new houses built to replace the informal shack are not 'ground' to site and few communal facilities exist to give people a sense of belonging. Anchoring This is an exploration of anchoring in architecture. Firstly, it is about the anchoring of community through public spaces and communal facilities. Secondly, it is about the anchoring of the individual through buildings, which can impart a sense of belonging and attachment to a specific place. Lastly, it is also about the physical anchoring of buildings to their specific sites. The document is divided into three main sections, roughly corresponding to the three . above-mentioned ideas about anchoring. Section A deals with the issue of Squatting. Its aim is· simply to understand the issue of squatting in Imizamo Yethu in a greater context: globally, historically and physically. Section B, Anchoring, is an exploration into 'site', and the special conditions that emerge at the point where buildings meet the ground, with a focus on threshold spaces and their importance in architecture. Intervening, the final section, puts some of the ideas and principles learnt through my research to the test. It is a study and implementation of threshold spaces within the squatter community of lmizamo Yethu.

An investigation into the quality of surface water and ground water was conducted during 1988 in the 38,8 km² Hout Bay River catchment near Cape Town. The main objective of the study was to determine those areas and activities which constitute a pollution source and to ascertain the relative proportion which each contributes to the pollution problem and health risk of the surf zone of the beach at Hout Ba . The objective was achieved by monitoring the chemical and microbiological attributes of the Hout Bay River, its tributaries and stormdrains in wet and dry conditions on a routine basis and during storm events. Hout Bay is a rapidly developing residential area in which sewage disposal occurs by means of septic tank soakaway systems. Ground water quality was monitored to investigate the contribution to contamination by septic tank effluent. Results showed that stormdrain effluent in dry and wet conditions and surface runoff during rainfall were the main vectors of pollution. Although the pollution concentration was high during dry conditions the greatest pollution discharge to the surf zone of Hout Bay occurred during storm events. In view of the proposed residential development it is imperative that pollution control measures be undertaken so as to secure the future recreational and aesthetic value of Hout Bay

Cdx and Hox gene families both code for homeodomain-containing transcription factors and both are required for proper patterning of the anterior-posterior axis. Although Cdx is known to be upstream of certain Hox genes, preliminary data indicated Cdx1 interacts in vitro with Hoxd4 but not Hoxa9, and that this interaction is localized to the C-terminal region of both proteins. GST-pulldown assays with in vitro radiolabelled proteins or transfected cell lysates were used to investigate the extent of the Cdx-Hox interactions. The interaction was narrowed down to specific residues in the first half of the homeodomain, but an inhibitory N-terminus can abrogate interaction in vitro. A larger group of Hox proteins interact with GST-Cdx when they are expressed in a cellular environment. This could mean that the interaction requires other cofactors, such as Hox cofactors Pbx and Meis that also interact with GST-Cdx1 in vitro. This study is the first example of Cdx-Hox protein interactions and suggests that the Cdx-Hox complex could be involved in the regulation of downstream Hox target genes.

This essay examines the ideology or value system implicit in Joanne Rowling's Harry Potter series. Many of the images in the series, despite being fantastic or empirically unprecedented, are minor transformations of popular books and of our very common physical and cultural reality. However, these imaginative transformations of mundane reality actually imitate, reiterate, and conserve common and contemporary secular values. On a third level the thesis will show that this conservation of contemporary secular values is undermined by a cynical and very subtle transformative element of satire, parody, and criticism.
Depending on the theme explored by the particular chapter, a different level of meaning might be evident. Chapter One discusses Rowling's parody of popular secular values. Chapter Two focuses on her parody of Christianity. Chapter Three focuses on Rowling's representations of nature and technology and on her parodic reversal of their traditional representation in similar literature. Chapter Four discusses how Rowling has made a critical appropriation of popular culture's reliance on thoughtless and 'instant' solutions, and discusses how she has made a mockery of her own hero, Harry Potter.
The conclusion discusses the value of literary devices that transform literal meanings and verbal images into new meanings and images, and concludes that Harry Potter should be read cautiously. A second conclusion is that the author's claim the series is incomplete is a hoax. This argument is defended with a demonstration that the existing four Harry Potter books form a complete unit, and with a reminder that an element of hoax pervades Rowling's entire series.

In attempting to control the power output of a wind farm, it is first necessary to smooth the power fluctuations due to wind turbulence. This is accomplished by spatial smoothing, whereby the high frequency power components of a single wind turbine generator (WTG) is reduced by a factor of N-1/2, where N is the number of WTGs in the farm. For this reason the first part of the thesis is concerned with developing a model of smoothing in a wind farm and justifying it mathematically.After spatial smoothing, the wind farm output still contains low frequency fluctuations. The second part of the thesis makes use of a combination of: (i) pitch angle control of the turbine blades, (ii) power electronic control of the generators, (iii) spatial filtering and (iv) negative feedback control to remove the low frequency fluctuations. The wind farm output then has the quality to be sold as regulated power which fetches a better economic return than when sold as energy. This, of course, presumes that 1-hour ahead prediction of wind velocity at 1-hour long low variance is available.
The thesis also considers the case when the conditions for regulated power are not predicted. In this situation, the wind farm may opt to use the tracking mode which tracks the slowly time varying non-turbulent wind power. The thesis examines the possibility of diverting some of the wind farm power to implement dynamic performance enhancement strategies, for system damping for example.
The controllability of the wind farm is demonstrated by simulations of a wind farm made up of 24 wind turbine-generators (WTGs) using 1-hour long wind velocity data.

Thesis (MA (Geography and Environmental Studies))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The research problem addressed in this study is how to ascertain the primary determinants of house prices in Hout Bay. This overarching aim encompasses three interwoven aspects. The research attempts first to determine which factors generally affect property prices in Hout Bay; second, to assess the extent to which individual factors affect house prices; and third, to discover the role variables collectively play in determining house prices in Hout Bay. Four objectives emerge from this subdivision of the aim, namely identify potential house priceinfluencing factors in Hout Bay; quantify the selected locational variables; statistically analyse the variables to distinguish the significant and insignificant ones; and use regression analysis to deduce the collective and individual influences of the significant factors on house prices. Structured interviews were conducted with representatives of 12 estate agencies in Hout Bay to uncover factors affecting the local property market. Through insights gleaned from the literature, manipulation of municipal valuation and cadastral data and the structured interviews, 39 structural and site-related variables, 18 distance variables and 11 socioeconomic variables were constructed. Several preliminary and descriptive analyses performed on the variables gave a general impression of the distribution of data and assisted in identifying statistically significant variables for determining house prices. These analyses included measures of central tendency (mean, median and mode); measures of dispersion (minimum and maximum values, range, standard deviation, skewness and kurtosis); the compilation of histograms for each variable; analysis of variance (ANOVA) on nominal data variables; and the creation of 2D scatterplots for ordinal data variables. Spearman rank order correlation was performed on the nominal and ordinal data variables. Statistically weak variables and those exhibiting signs of multicollinearity were eliminated. A best-subsets regression analysis was executed on the remaining variables. The regression model performed adequately, explaining close to 54% of the variation in house prices in Hout Bay. Among the individual factors, the size of the erf was the strongest predictor of the house price dependent variable, house size was the second most important factor, while distance to busy roads and quality of the house shared similar importance. Regression residuals were also mapped to expose spatial patterns. It is recommended that comparable research be conducted on a citywide scale, that variables be quantified differently and that new GIS techniques be incorporated in future studies.

This essay, which accompanies a photo-book, constructs a different picture which I have made of Hout Bay; a picture that lies behind the glossy postcard and calendar photographs of this global tourist attraction; one that lies hidden from foreign tourists as well as from local visitors to the
harbour, who are attracted by sunset trips into the bay and ‘locally harvested’ sea-food ‘fresh
from the sea’ eateries. Using a photographic metaphor this picture is an overlay of three ‘negatives’ and like the negatives used in film photography, they need to be ‘developed’ before they can be seen by the eye of a casual passer-by who might gaze upon them in an exhibition. However a photographer knows that (the process of) developing a negative can be halted at any point that she chooses and what is revealed is what she already had in her minds-eye as the significant idea that she wants to communicate (which may or may not be what the passer-by sees). This is an apt metaphor for the three sections of this essay– each of the three central sections are in the process of being developed and what is read now is nothing more than a moment in their development. Like any overlay they need to be seen in combination to make the sense that the photographer (myself) wishes to communicate. But unlike most overlays, this overlay is comprised of three ‘negatives’ that in each case have been halted the process of their development.
These three transparencies are: Firstly of my adventure in a political praxis that has traversed
social activism, academia as a rural/environmental economist and currently involves photographically documenting the lives of the people of Hangberg (Hout Bay), squeezed between the iconic Sentinel peak and Mariners Wharf (an important tourist attraction) on the Hout Bay harbour. The second transparency is an account of the development of documentary photography, a much contested enterprise (Rosenblum 1997, Marien 2002, Golden 2005, Abbott 2010), using Habermas’ three knowledge constitutive interests (Habermas 1981, Habermas 1985) as an indicative framework. The third is an analysis of the socio-political context of Hangberg that draws together political theories that have their roots in Antonio Gramsci’s (Gramsci 1971, Simon 1991) notion of the subaltern, most notably the Subaltern Studies Group in Calcutta formed by Gayatri Spivak and exemplified in Partha Chattterjee’s (Chatterjee 2000, Chatterjee 2004, Chatterjee 2011) distinction between political and civil societies, Asef Bayat’s (Bayat 2013, Bayat 2013) quiet encroachment of the ordinary, Hardt and Negri,’s (Hardt 2009, Hardt 2017) perspective on the commons, as well as Murray Li’s (Li 2007, Li 2014), Shiva’s (Shiva 1988) and Scott’s (Scott 1998, Scott 2009) (re)thinking about capitalist modernity.

The first chapter is my proposal for the costume design as well as a thorough play analysis and Lillian Hellman’s background. Chapter two covers my design process, and discoveries made through the design meeting process. The production is discussed in Chapter three when my designs were realized, and Chapter five is a reflection on the entire process after the show closed. The subsequent appendices include additional renderings and photographs to further enhance my written analysis.

The so-called family-viewing hour, the eight to nine o’clock hour of prime time, is one of the most watched hours of television by both adults and children. Advertisers, of course, favor shows that draw large audiences so their product presentations or commercials are witnessed by masses of people. Now, because of videocassette recorders and other similar control devices, viewers are eliminating commercials from their viewing experience1 and advertisers are clamoring for new ways to get their products into the mind of the consumer.2 To counteract this commercial avoidance by consumers, advertisers are embedding products within television programming thereby hindering the viewer’s ability to eliminate commercials or product promotions. The result is that products that are normally not viewed become part of the viewing experience. This study revealed that the family-viewing hour is laden with product placements that include a variety of different types of products and brands.

Vårt tillvägagångssätt handlar om att använda enkäter och intervjuer för att besvara våra frågeställningar. Våra huvudsakliga frågeställningar handlar om hur pedagoger ser på sitt pedagogiska uppdrag gällande 15-timmarbarnen, hur föräldrar till dessa barn ser på sitt barns förskolgång och hur politikerna ser på bestämmelser kring 15-timmarsregeln.In the Education Act (of Sweden) its described that children to parental leave or children to unemployed have the right to attend at least tree hours a day or 15 hours a week, at preschool. We’ve studied various aspects of the terms of 15 hour children in Ängelholm. We have chosen to approach our issue by using interviews and questionnaires with parents, preschool-teachers and a politician. Our main questions is about how parents look at their children’s stay in preschool, how preschool- teachers look at their pedagogical assignment and how the politician approaches the regulation around the terms of the15-hour rule. After recalling some aspects of Uri Bronfenbrenners theory, we present an approach to his model and use the different kind of levels to make our research findings legible. Further on we are using prior research as Qvortrup and Halldén. Their research concerns preschool as an institution. To sum up we have come to the conclusion of that there is a big lack of communication between the different information groups. The municipality has to take a decision, according to these children, based on the financial situation; the preschool teachers have no power to influence the decision of the municipality and don’t have as much time for the parents as they wished. The parents are concerned that there children don’t have the time they need in preschool and that there children are going to miss out on activities that the other children at preschool gets.

Hox genes encode a family of transcription factors that play highly conserved regulatory roles in specifying the properties of tissues in developing embryos. Very little is known about how HOX proteins control the cellular and developmental processes governing morphogenesis through regulation of down-stream target genes. The goal of this research was to investigate on a genome-wide basis, the rules and principles which underlie the binding of different HOX proteins to target sites and understand the basis for their distinct specificities. I utilized the programmed differentiation of mouse embryonic stem cells into a neural fate with retinoids and genomic technologies to systematically investigate binding properties of two HOX proteins, HOXA1 and HOXBI and their cofactors PBX and MEIS. I analyzed the induction properties of the cells and the transcriptional dynamics and epigenetic states in Hox clusters to explore the differentiation process. An extensive and dynamic pattern of transcriptional activity indicates that Hox clusters generate a large number of non-coding RNAs which may impact their activation and chromatin states. Global identification of HOXB 1, HOXA1, PBX and MEIS binding regions by chromatin immune precipitation and high throughout sequencing (ChIP-seq) has generated insight into many potential Hox target genes. HOXA1 binding peaks generally overlapped with those of PBX and MEIS, supporting their roles as HOX co-factors. The sites bound by HOXBl uncovered new classes of binding motifs. Regulatory assays demonstrated that many of these novel motifs functioned as neuronal enhancers. Many HOXB I binding peaks have closely associated REST motifs and bind the REST repressor complex, which is important in neuronal differentiation. The close association of REST and HOXB 1 binding sites provides a mechanism for coordinating cell differentiation programs in neurogenesis. This research has uncovered novel properties of HO X proteins and their co-factors that underlie their role as master regulators of patterning and morphogenesis

Detta examensarbete är genomfört i samarbete med produktutvecklingsavdelningen på IKEA i Älmhult.
Ingvar Kamprad startade IKEA år 1943 som en postorderfirma. Idag är företaget ett av världens största möbelföretag med 253 varuhus i 35 länder och med en omsättning på 161 miljarder kronor.
Compact living är ett område på frammarsch inom inredningsvärlden. IKEA strävar efter att kunna erbjuda marknadskraftig heminredning inom alla områden. 24 hour Living room och dess delprojekt är en utgångspunkt för framtida idéer inom området.
24 hour Livingroom är ett projekt där en urban lägenhet på cirka 40m2 skall möbleras för ett compact living. Nyframtagna möbler och prototyper skall förenkla vardagen för en familj på två vuxna och två barn. Examensarbetet som en del av 24 hour, går ut på att utveckla en möbel som kombinerar sovplats och arbetsplats, men samtidigt vara kombinerbar med förvaringsserien Bestå från nuvarande sortiment. Syftet med prototypen är att minimera oanvänd yta - att göra små ytor större.
En utförlig funktionsanalys där möbelns egenskaper och begränsningar redovisas, har tillsammans med IKEAs standarder utgjort parametrar för möbelns förutsättningar i materialtjocklekar, viktkrav och utseende. Då ergonomi står i fokus i dagens och framtidens arbetsmiljöer är möbeln konstruerad för att förenkla vardagen och minimera kroppsbelastningen.
I rapporten kommer möbelindustrins vanligaste produktionsmaterial och ytbehandlingsmetoder att beskrivas. Här kommer även områden såsom IKEAsortimentets madrassalternativ och väggfästen att redogöras.
Fokus i arbetet har legat på konstruerandet av en användbar prototyp. För att användaren skall slippa plocka bort och ställa fram dator med mera, varje gång funktion växlas, har skrivbordet utvecklats så det alltid är i ett horisontellt läge. Madrass och sängkläder lider av samma problematik, detta löses genom att madrassen står i en 90 graders vinkel under tiden kombinationsmöbeln används som arbetsplats. För att få en kortare utvecklingstid och en förenklad produktion har målet varit att använda IKEA components redan existerande beslag och förstärkningar. Ritningar för möbeln är gjorda efter IKEAstandard i 3d programmet SolidWorks och prototypen är skapad av IKEAs modellverkstad i Älmhult.

The thesis begins with an examination of current problems in the nature and application of scientific method. Particular difficulties are encountered when dealing with experiences whose only criterion of existence are verbal reports and in those circumstances in which a complex array of variables are interacting to produce the observed events. Both of these difficulties are paramount in the study of dreams. It is suggested that Systems Theory offers an alternative and more fruitful method of investigating dreams in comparison to traditional scientific method. Systems thinking provides the use of a substantive methodology for approaching the field of enquiry and a set of concepts for aiding the development of theory in that field. Systems theory has been used to this effect as a critical tool in the appraisal of existing work in the psychology of dreaming. Dreaming itself has been construed as the outcome of a hierarchically organized multilevelled network of interconnecting processes which requires for its understanding a network of interconnecting models each focusing at different 'levels of resolution' and addressing limited domains of dream experience. This hierarchical process it is postulated can be found reflected in an hierarchy present in dream content --- Dream; Scenel Recurrent images and Unique images. The hierarchical scheme is extended to include issues concerning the social construction and meaning of dreams (recal1, interpretation etc). Several experiments exploring these ideas are reported and discussed with tentative suggestions offered as to how the set of processes operating at the different levels combine into a dynamic interplay.

The real estate industry has posited that 24-hour cities provide superior risk-adjusted returns. This thesis examines that claim rigorously for the first time. Urban characteristics are related to literature in urban history, planning theory, and economic geography. An operational definition of the 24-hour city based on empirical data is specified. 24-hour and 9-to-5 cities are evaluated by the operational definition, and by K-means Cluster Analysis. 24-hour cities are found to have higher city densities, greater use of mass transit and walk-to-work commutation, higher percentages of late night automobile traffic, more 24-hour drug stores, lower crime rates, and higher measures of regional distinctiveness. Superior performance is observed in inflation-adjusted office rents, occupancy, and risk-adjusted return on office investment for 1987 - 2009, at the 0.01 level of statistical significance. A multivariate regression of urban attributes on CBD office building prices also finds significance at the 0.01 level. Survey data and expert interviews provide new detail on industry desiderata. 24-hour cities can be considered exceptions to the standard Alonso-Mills-Muth urban spatial model. An anentropic model based on complexity theory (requiring development) , may better explain emergent self-organisation as displayed in those cities.

Musicians are universally reliant on practice to improve and perfect their craft and there is substantial evidence that suggests mastery can only be achieved after 10,000 hours of practice early in life. This dissertation explores the validity of this theory as it pertains to master percussionists and examines their discoveries and recommendations as to how those 10,000 hours should best be spent. Research sources include selected published literature and personal interviews with thirty-six percussionists, conducted between 2010- 2013. The research is summarized in the following six sections: the 10,000-hour threshold; planning a practice session; warming up; learning new music; problem spots; and performance preparation. The primary goal of this dissertation is to detail the specific practice methods currently implemented by many of today’s most successful percussionists. This research should reveal the various ways success can be achieved in the practice room and help aspiring and accomplished professionals alike explore and integrate new practice methods and philosophies into their own careers and the careers of their students.

In mammalian species there are 39 Hox genes and they are structural and functional homologs of the Drosophila homeotic complex (Horn-C). During embryogenesis and early development the Hox genes are expressed in a spatiotemporal fashion, where they operate as master transcriptional regulators. Hox genes are further expressed in fully differentiated adult cells, potentially in a tissue-specific manner involving maintenance of the normal phenotype. In selected oncogenic transformations, dysregulated Hox gene expression has been observed, indicating an involvement of these transcriptional regulators in carcinogenesis and metastasis. Utilising quantitative real-time PCR assays, these studies investigated the expression patterns of 20 Hox genes and two wellcharacterised Hox cofactors (Pbx and Meis) in malignant and non-malignant human breast and skin cancer cells. Dysregulated Hox expression was observed for all malignancies tested, of which some misexpressed Hox genes seemed random, whereas other Hox transcripts showed altered levels potentially corresponding with the invasive capacity of the cells. Also, the Hox cofactors Pbx and Meis showed no marked changes in expression levels from the non-malignant to the malignant phenotypes, indicating that it is dysregulated Hox gene expression rather than dysregulated gene expression of Hox cofactors that potentially commit the cell to redifferentiate and undergo oncogenic transformation. Although the Hox proteins are known to be key transcriptional regulators of development, the mechanisms by which they gain their in vivo functional specificity is still largely unknown. They all show strikingly similar transcriptional specificity in vitro, yet show unique specificity in their in vivo environment. This paradox has been the subject of intense scrutiny, however very few direct Hox target genes have been identified, making it a difficult task to decipher the exact manner in which Hox proteins exert their functional potential. Utilising bioinformatic tools in conjunction with performing an extensive review of the disparate catalogue of Hox-related research reports, work herein offers the first comprehensive analysis of the mammalian Hox gene targets in relation to their promoter structures, as well as with respect to the expanded Hox DNA-binding elements. This work reports that identified Hox targets generally contain TATA-less core promoters, many of which have several GC-box elements. The Hox binding elements show no apparent preference regarding their location relative to the transcription start site (TSS), as they are found both upstream and downstream of the TSS, as well as being located close to proximal core promoter elements for some genes and at more distant positions in other gene promoters. Finally, the core Hox binding element TAAT/ATTA contains only part of the necessary recognition sequence involved in Hox-DNA binding, and the notion that flanking base pairs dictate trans-regulatory potential is further explored with the hypothesis that the immediate 3' base pair dictates an activator/repressor-switch of the Hox trans-regulatory effect.

Utilising bioinformatic tools in conjunction with performing an extensive review of the disparate catalogue of Hox-related research reports, work herein offers the first comprehensive analysis of the mammalian Hox gene targets in relation to their promoter structures, as well as with respect to the expanded Hox DNA-binding elements. This work reports that identified Hox targets generally contain TATA-less core promoters, many of which have several GC-box elements. The Hox binding elements show no apparent preference regarding their location relative to the transcription start site (TSS), as they are found both upstream and downstream of the TSS, as well as being located close to proximal core promoter elements for some genes and at more distant positions in other gene promoters. Finally, the core Hox binding element TAAT/ATTA contains only part of the necessary recognition sequence involved in Hox-DNA binding, and the notion that flanking base pairs dictate trans-regulatory potential is further explored with the hypothesis that the immediate 3' base pair dictates an activator/repressor-switch of the Hox trans-regulatory effect.Thesis (PhD Doctorate)

After seven years of exceptional growth in the 1980s, the Department of Defense (DOD) budget is confronted with Congressional budget reduction and deficit control measures. A revised Gramm-Rudman-Hollings Act was passed in September 1987 setting annual deficit targets for fiscal years 1988 to 1993. If the legislation is implemented, DOD organizations face an extended period of financial constraint and budgetary uncertainty. This thesis examines the flight hour program of Commander, Patrol Wings Pacific in developing methods to prepare for an era of budget constraints. The thesis discusses the Gramm-Rudman Act and general organizational reaction to fiscal stress. It then analyzes management control of nonprofit organizations, productivity measurement, and alternative accounting and financial management information systems as means for coping with budget reduction. Decision-makers at all levels of the military must understand these methods in order to manage effectively in an era of financial constraint. The rapid spread of digital information and communication technologies since the turn of the century has led to renewed debates about globalisation and the power of new media to connect users across national, political and cultural borders. Environmental campaigns like WWF's Earth Hour, which touts itself as “the world's largest grassroots movement for the environment,” often adopt a utopian view of globalisation that celebrates what Marshall McLuhan termed the ‘global village'. While this global ethos might be useful in engaging the publics in collective action, this article argues that the way Earth Hour and similar campaigns actively construct representations of a single global village overlooks the lived inequalities between and among peoples within this imagined community. This article explores this tension using a quantitative and qualitative mixed-methods approach that combines a semiotic analysis of the Earth Hour 2019 promotional video, social media analysis of the use of #Connect2Earth hashtag among South African Twitter users, and in-depth interviews with current and former WWF-South Africa employees. This strategic approach is designed to juxtapose socially constructed representations of Earth Hour with on-the-ground user engagement in South Africa, and then triangulating these findings with qualitative interviews. The dissertation aims to explore the research question: In what ways does WWF's Earth Hour embody Marshall McLuhan's ideal ‘global village' and in what ways might it engender a form of eco-imperialism? This research question is operationalised through three subquestions: What kind of environmentalism do global environmental campaigns like Earth Hour promote? How do audiences in South Africa engage with Earth Hour on social media? How do local WWF of ices adapt global environmental campaigns to suit local audiences? This research contributes to emerging scholarship, rooted in environmental justice and decolonial studies, that is critical of mainstream environmental movements not to discourage environmental consciousness but to ultimately reformulate it.

The topic of the present thesis is Suite Concertante for violin and orchestra composed by Bohuslav Martinů. I have attempted an inguiry into the eventful life of Bohuslav Martinů ( 1 st chaper), into the background and details of origin of the individual versions of the piece ( 2 nd chapter) and into other pieces composed by Martinů for violin ( violin concertos, sonatas, other pieces for violin and piano and lost works )(4 th chapter),.I have also analyzed the structure of Suite Concertante for violin and orchestra and compared the two versions ( 3rd chapter).I have used my own interpretation of the second version during the graduation concert on February 7 th 2015. I am convinced that studying materials regarding Bohuslav Martinů as well as performing of the second version during the graduation concert will be a source of inspiration for my further interpretations of Suite Concertante and other works by Martinů.
