Abstract:
Inequality measures typically consider inequality between households, whereas one should ultimately be interested in inequality between individuals. We review some conceptual issues raised by the evaluation of intra-household inequality, in particular in the presence of public consumptions. We then describe recent theoretical and empirical advances in modelling household behavior, which are based on the collective model of household behavior. Lastly, we discuss normative issues involved, in particular when the weighting of individual welfare that is implicit in the household’s decision process is not socially optimal.

Abstract:
This chapter surveys current perspectives on children and stages of childhood within Roman households and examines how archaeological evidence for household organization can change these perspectives. It discusses what can be gleaned from analyses of archaeological evidence for household space and household activities, and notably from assessing skeletal remains, material culture, and decoration. It discusses what this evidence can tell us about potential numbers of children in households, how they might have inhabited this space and played with their pets and their toys, and how this evidence might be used to deepen understandings of children and their sociospatial practices within household organization. It uses two case studies, from urban elite households in Pompeii and from provincial non-elite households, notably military households of ordinary soldiers.

Abstract:
This chapter assesses the relevance of the collective model for the analysis of households in poor countries. As an economic unit, a household creates the possibility of mutual gains for spouses thanks to the possibility of joint consumption of public goods, risk sharing, etc. The collective model assumes that households behave efficiently, in the sense that there is no misallocation or waste of household resources, given the outside options of each spouse. This chapter bridges the theoretical literature describing efficient intra-household behaviour and the development literature that collects empirical regularities pointing toward the existence of strategic decision making among spouses. It examines the key elements of the collective model and discusses its relevance to analysing intra-household behaviour in poor countries. It explores the role that risk and uncertainty, information asymmetries, power imbalances, arranged marriages, strategic investment, gender norms, and extended households play in the attainment of efficiency.

Abstract:
One episode in Edmund Spenser’sFaerie Queeneshows a sudden transition of worlds which is paradigmatic of Protestant self-representation. From cannibalistic Catholics to pastoral piety, from a godless outdoors to the small-scale courtesies of the godly household, this shift implies that the act of violent religious Reformation abruptly gives rise to a cultural reformation that profoundly changes the scale and style of social organization. This article argues that Spenser’s Protestant mythology still shapes the understanding of households in the sixteenth century and that it is radically misleading. Royal and magnate households dominate the early part of the century, while representations of small-scale (and sometimes only incidentally Protestant) households richly populate the drama and narrative prose of its end. By focusing on the role played by non-royal households in writing by mid-century Catholics-George Cavendish’sLife and Death of Cardinal Wolseyand William Roper’sThe Lyfe of Sir Thomas Moore, Knighte--this article argues two things: that it is wrong to regard the royal household as the all-encompassing centre of early Tudor writing; and that is incorrect to suggest that the Protestant reformation aided the emergence of smaller-scale domestic institutions. In these mid-century works there is a counter-reformation representation of the household which had a powerful influence on later representations of the household—including even those of Protestants such as Spenser, George Gascoigne and Shakespeare.

Abstract:
Zenobia’s marriage to Odainath, the Palmyrene dynast, had a huge impact on her life. Her rise to power would thereafter be closely linked to his political fortunes. This chapter examines the prominence of Odainath and the children that Zenobia bore to him. Historical sources present confusing accounts of the number of children they had. The only undisputed child is Wahballath, though she may have had other children in the late 250s and 260s. Zenobia also was a property owner, for in Palmyra women could own and manage property. This chapter also gives a detailed account of Odainath’s successful political and military career as Palmyra’s leader.
