Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to presents one of the first direct micro-econometric impact of competitive industries (based on revealed comparative advantage [RCA] between Pakistan and China) on household welfare in Pakistan using semi-parametric matching technique. Design/methodology/approach The study has also measured and identified the industrial competitiveness in both agricultural and non-agricultural (manufacturing) industries using RCA approach. RCA at the four-digit ISIC level are matched to household survey data (Pakistan Social and Living Standard Measurement) for 2013-2014 to represent the competitive industries in which the household’s higher earner is employed. Findings The findings of the study reveal that the China–Pakistan ex-post treatment effect (industrial competitiveness) provides welfare-improving effects. Furthermore, on this behalf, this study further assesses ex-ante treatment effects of recently signed China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) on household welfare and suggests that CPEC would boost further trade liberalization and, therefore, would lead to industrial competitiveness and hence economic growth. Originality/value Paper contributes to two streams of literature. First, it measures and identifies the industrial competitiveness in both agricultural and non-agricultural industries using RCA approach; and second, it assesses the welfare of those households associated with these industries using semi-parametric propensity score matching technique.

Abstract:
Diverse set of income generating activities may have varying effect on household’s welfare situation. This study intends to assess the extent of different income diversification strategies on rural household welfare. A total sample of 153 households from three districts of Bangladesh was randomly selected. Considering simultaneous causality between different livelihood strategies and welfare indicators, the Two Stage Least Square (2SLS) methods with instrumental variable was applied to estimate impact of the strategies on household welfare. Household per capita expenditure was treated as the welfare indicator which includes both food and non-food expenditures. The findings show that involving in any type of non-farm activities jointly with farming has a significantly positive effect on the household’s welfare. Among different non-farm activities, participation in wage employment and migration along with agricultural activities ensured significantly higher per capita household expenditure. On the other hand, the impact of currently participation in only agricultural activities on household expenditure is insignificant. Besides, Farm size, higher education and infrastructural facilities also play an important role in improving household’s welfare. Therefore, policy should be directed to create opportunities to participate in non-farm activities through establishment of small and medium industries, especially agro-based industries in the rural areas. Abstract:
Industrial integration provides an important tool to promote the revitalization of rural industries and is an effective way to promote sustainable income growth for farmers and to build a well-off society. The main implementer of rural industrial integration are individual farmers. The fundamental state of life of the farm households determines the implement ability of industrial farming cooperation. The development of rural industries has played an irreplaceable role in the process of poverty eradication in China. Promoting the integration of the three rural industries can play an important role in consolidating the fight against poverty and bridging the stage of rural revitalization to continuously play a role in the development of rural industries and lay the foundation for the smooth implementation of rural revitalization. Whereas human capital was one of the important perspectives in studying the integration of three rural industries, the relationship between human capital in education and the integration of three rural industries was empirically analyzed based on data from the China Household Tracking Survey (CFPS). With the help of a Random Forest model algorithm, the importance of key elements affecting the integration of rural industries was measured and ranked.

Abstract:
Low-carbon industries and people's lives are interrelated. A survey was conducted with a population sample of 100 households. This paper compared the rural and urban households’ energy consumption. It was found that the household energy-use is complex. The urban households’ energy use has a high-carbon tendency. The rural households’ energy consumption is relatively low-carbon, but their energy consumption behaviors are gradually being abandoned. Whether the consumer chooses a low-carbon lifestyle or not, it does not relate to his idea but to the industries. With the economic level improving, all households may choose electricity only. If the Power industry is not low carbon, the life of people can't be low carbon. The article focuses on the energy industry and concerns that low-carbon life is driven by low-carbon industries.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper investigates the causal relationship between the Urban and Rural Resident Basic Medical Insurance (URRBMI) reform and household consumption in urban China using data from the Chinese Household Income Project survey and employing combination of the propensity score matching and difference‐in‐differences methods. The results yield three conclusions. First, the reform affected both the amount and share of household consumption. Specifically, the reform led to an increase in total household consumption, encompassing both medical and nonmedical expenditures. Among these, the proportion of medical consumption increased, while the proportion of nonmedical consumption reduced. Second, the impact of the URRBMI reform varied across consumption categories within nonmedical expenditure. Specifically, consumption for education and entertainment industries are positively impacted by the URRBMI reform in terms of both quantity and proportion. Third, low‐income households benefit more from the URRBMI reform compared to middle‐ and high‐income households. The main channels through which the URRBMI reform affects household consumption were the price effect and the crowding out effect on precautionary savings.

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted positively and negatively a variety of industries, including the food industry [1-3]. Meanwhile, the food industry is more affected by this disease compared to other industries because of its wide relationship with the household and the community. Various places, such as restaurants, coffee shops, hotels, and schools were either closed during this period or did not provide services same as in the past. As a result, many blows were inflicted on such industries. The demand for food by households decreased during this period and caused a part of the food market to be lost [4]. Global average prices for a variety of food products increased by 2% to 9% with half of the tracked goods rising by 7% or more [5].

Abstract:
China has been the world’s largest market for industrial robots since 2013. Industrial robots improve accuracy, safety, and efficiency in industrial production but have a substantial impact on the labor market. This investigation uses the task-based model to explore the relationship between industrial robots and employment across industries. This study uses industrial robot data from the International Federation of Robotics and employment data from the China Statistical Yearbook from 2010 to 2019 to examine robot applications’ influencing mechanisms on labor demand in different industries in China. The results show a significant positive correlation between robots’ exposure and labor demand for IT, health and social services, science research and technical services, and management of water conservancy and environmental industries. Based on the results, the use of robots promotes high-skilled talent employment and some third-sector employment, like education, food and beverages, utilities, household appliances, and transport. However, multiple regression analysis reveals that the use of robots has reduced employment in traditional industries such as agriculture and mining.

Abstract:
The Japanese government developed a strategy for plastics and laid out ambitious targets including the reduction of 25% for single-use plastic waste and the reuse/recycling of 60% for plastic containers and packaging by 2030. However, the current usage situation of single-use plastics including containers and packaging, which should be a basis of the strategy, is unclear. Here, we identify the nationwide material flow of plastics in Japan based on input–output tables. Of the domestic plastic demand of 8.4 Mt in 2015, 1.6 and 2.5 Mt were estimated to be for containers and packaging comprising household and industry inflows, respectively, through the purchase/procurement of products, services, and raw materials. Considering the current amount of recycling collected from households (1.0 Mt) and industries (0.3 to 0.4 Mt), the reuse/recycling target has already been achieved if the goal is limited to household container and packaging waste, as is the focus of Japan’s recycling law. Conversely, the results indicate that it will be extremely difficult to reach the target collectively with industries. Therefore, it is essential that efforts be made throughout the entire supply chain. Food containers and packaging that flowed into the food-processing and food service sectors accounted for 15% of the inflow of containers and packaging into industries. Thus, the key to achieving the reuse/recycling target will comprise the collection of plastic food packaging from not only households but also the food industry. Furthermore, the collection of flexible plastic films used between industry sectors will put the target within reach.

Abstract:
AbstractThe structure of GDP nowadays is still dominated by households. As a result, economic growth stands at 5 percent. To boost economic growth performance, industrialization should be taken into account. In the process, energy availability particularly electricity becomes one of the main components. For this reason, the main purpose of this study is to measure the effect of electricity and industrialization on economic growth. To do so, this study employs ARDL model and uses secondary data with sample period from 1987 to 2016. Regression result analysis shows that electricity consumption, manufacturing, workers in the industrial sector, household consumption, and trading volume empirically significant both in the short-run and long-run. Interestingly, the value of the electricity consumption coefficient, the added value of processing industries, and the proportion of workers in the industrial sector are positive indicating that those variables contribute positively to economic growth. Meanwhile, the value of household consumption coefficient and trading volume is negative. This indicates that those variables contribute negatively to economic growth. Interestingly, among the five explanatory variables, electricity consumption is the strongest variable in boosting economic growth both in the short-run and the long-run. In addition, bounds cointegration test shows that all explanatory variables involved in this study have a long-term relationship with economic growth.

Abstract:
Household survey and focus group discussion (FGD) were carried out in year 2017/18 in Sindhuli and Ramechhap districts in order to identify scope and constraints for better sweet orange production. A semi-structured questionnaire acquiring household and orchard information, production, post-harvest operation as well as marketing situation was administered in the survey of 60 and 62 households in Sindhuli and Ramechhap, respectively. Prior to household survey, a FGD was carried out in each site of Sindhuli and Ramechhap to collect general information and cross check the individual response. Poor orchard management, lack of irrigation, infestation of a number of insects including fruit fly, infection of a number of diseases as well as lack of financial facilities were reported as key constraints to grow sweet orange industries in these districts. The yield of sweet orange was found less than national average yield in both survey sites. Various measures to increase production and to improve post-harvest quality of fruits have been suggested based on situation analysis.

We report on a field experiment providing random grants to microenterprise owners. The grants generated large profit increases for male owners but not for female owners. We show that the gender gap does not simply mask differences in ability, risk aversion, entrepreneurial attitudes, or differences in reporting behavior, but there is some evidence that the gender gap is larger in female-dominated industries. The data are not consistent with a unitary household model, and imply an inefficiency of resource allocation within households. We show evidence that this inefficiency is reduced in more cooperative households. (JEL D13, D14, J16, L25, L26, O12, O16)

Abstract:
This paper investigates economic impacts of COVID-19 on households based on differences in the socio-economic status (SES). We determine the household-level effects of the COVID-19 shock using income sources, types of industries, communities’ resilience, household susceptibility, and relevant policy measures. For this purpose, we used primary data of 555 households collected through snowball sampling technique using an online survey questionnaire from different villages mostly located in Sichuan Province, China. Using step-wise binary logistic regression analysis, we estimated and validated the model. Results suggest the use of SES as a better measure for understanding the impacts of COVID-19 on different households. We find that households with low SES tend to depend more on farmland income and transfer payments from the government. Contrarily, high SES households focus more on business and local employment as sources of income generation. Poor households were less resilient and more likely to fall back into poverty due to COVID-19, while the opposite stands true for non-poor households with high SES. Based on the estimations, policies encouraging employment and businesses complemented with loans on lower interest rates are recommended, which may increase the SES, thus minimizing vulnerability and enhancing the households’ resilience towards poverty alleviation and economic shocks.

Although the footwear industry is one sector of the small and medium industries which supported by the government, but the development of the industry is still relatively low. Various government policies have been made related to export and import settings, however the policies do not seem to provide significant benefits to the national development of the footwear industry. The condition is further exacerbated by the implementation of CAFTA (China-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement) in Indonesia. The lack of preparedness of local industry in the face of Chinese products in the country is feared to suppress the competitiveness of local products become increasingly weak. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to analyze the factors that influence the development efforts of small and household footwear industries and to analyze the effect of CAFTA on the sustainability of small and household footwear industries. The research was conducted in Bogor (district and city) which is a center of footwear industry in Indonesia. The respondent of the study consists of the leading small and household industries taken by purposive sampling with 100 respondents. Data were analyzed using the statistical descripitive and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Based on SEM analysis, the results indicate that efforts to develop small and household footwear industries directly affected by motivation efforts of the entrepreneurs in this industry and the government policies that facilitate the entrepreneurs in this industry. Increasing the development of business sustainability is also directly influenced by the characteristics of the entrepreneurs who are able to optimize productivity and the CAFTA implementation which is responded by good competitiveness from the local industry.

Abstract:
Abstract Shredders have become an indispensable pail of modern life. Variety of shredders are available for different purposes such as Paper shredders, metal shredders, etc. They come in different sizes, ranging from small sizes for household applications to large sizes for industrial applications. These shredders are used to break down the material into smaller pieces so that they could be disposed of more easily and efficiently. Currently, these shredders are majorly used by large industries for waste disposal systems. This process of shredding the large waste produced by common households by itself will take an enormous amount of energy when accumulated overall as they mainly use fossil fuels for this purpose. This can be reduced by reducing to an extent if all the possible household waste is manually shredded at houses themselves instead of taking it to the industries. For this purpose. in this study, an economical shredder that has the capability to plastics, wood, and few low strength metals like aluminium has been designed. Beginning with a base design and have worked to improvise it in considered parameters. These parameters are the shredder being efficient, economical, and lighter. The design was repaired and optimized in Meshmixer Software and then sliced in Ultimaker Cura Software and was made 3-D printable. The developed model was found to be more helpful than the conventional shredders, as to its economical viability, ease in use and handling, and to its efficiency in shredding the plastics. As a result, a successful and efficient design of a portable shredder has been developed.

Abstract:
The bakery industry is one of the world’s major food industries and varies widely in production scale and process. In Indonesia, bakery household businesses are growing fast. They are one of the home industries that produce large amounts of wastewater, generally from the washing process of production equipment and rooms. Generally, bakery household businesses handle liquid waste from their activities by disposing of it directly into the surrounding environment or by first treating it using a Waste Treatment Plant (WTP), depending on the scale of the business and the type and character of the waste. However, smallto medium-scale bakery household businesses often dispose of their liquid waste directly into the surrounding drainage channels without any prior processing and have the potential to pollute the environment. Based on that, the wastewater generated from the household-scale bakery business must also be treated before being discharged into the environment. Furthermore, wastewater treated beforehand can be reused for other non-consumption household needs. One way to treat domestic waste from household-scale businesses or activities in a bakery is by using media filtration in a simple wastewater filtration system.

The Russia-Ukraine conflict has continued for more than a year, and many scholars have researched this event from different perspectives. In this essay, the author would analyze the influence of the conflict from the angle of household investors. Two related questions are solved in this article. One is focusing on the change of portfolio of the household investors after this emergency happened, and the other concentrates on how different kinds of household investors would apply their strategies to make a judgment. This essay reviews previous research on emergencies and reckons that the Russia-Ukraine conflict would have disparate features. Solving the first question, the author shows the data of four main industries in China, drawing a common ground for these industries. Then conclude that there’s a general trend of decreasing investment in the stock market and increasing investment in the bond market. The second question would be answered by reviewing the literature about the strategies of different household investors.

Abstract:
Purpose: The present study investigates the influence of demographic factors on the demand for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Pakistan. The government of Pakistan has implemented various skill enhancement programs to harness the demographic dividend. However, only a small portion of the workforce receives any form of TVET, contributing to a shortage of skilled workers in the country. Many industries, particularly in manufacturing and mining, face deficits in the skilled labour. Consequently, this study aims to examine the role of demographic factors in shaping the demand for TVET within the Pakistani context. Methods: For the TVET demand's estimation, this study employed the Pakistan Social and Living Standard Measurement (PSLM) dataset of 2018–19 by using binary logistic regression analysis (BLRA). The demographic variables include the household's income, household head's education, household size, male proportion of the target age group, household head's age, and region of the household. Findings: The findings indicate that households in the higher income category do not demand TVET. Moreover, if the head of the household is highly educated, then the household is less likely to participate in TEVT. So, the higher the socio-economic status, the lower the probability of demand for TVET from the better-off students. Further, this study also indicates that boys are more likely to participate in TVET-related degrees, while females are less likely to participate in TVET due to the non-availability of institutes and hostel facilities, poor transportation, the limited number of trades available for females, and security issues. Conclusion: The findings provide insightful evidence to support the idea that the higher the socio-economic status of households, the lower the probability of demand for a TVET degree or diploma. Similarly, children of parents with university education are less likely to pursue TVET-related degrees. The reason is likely attributed to the perception that TVET-associated degrees and diplomas are considered inferior due to their lower standing and prestige as compared to general or professional degrees. This study suggests that the attractiveness of TVET can be enhanced by improving the quality of TVET, improving labour market outcomes, and creating a pathway to general education. Overall, this study not only contributes to empirical analyses of socio-economic determinants in TVET demand but also suggests that its findings can be applied not only to South Asian countries but also to other comparable nations with similar cultural ties and affinities.

The paper presents the DSGE-model that describes the following sectors of the economy in relation to domestic realities: households, enterprises of the real sector and financial intermediaries. In turn, households are represented by two groups: savers and borrowers. Extractive industries are distinguished in the manufacturing sector. A feature of the proposed model is the FSC approach, which assumes that the owners of fixed assets are firms. They also make investment decisions. For mining companies, the production level is set exogenously in order to adequately reflect the impact of the OPEC + agreement. Financial intermediaries transform temporarily free household funds into loans to enterprises in the real sector.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to empirically investigate the effect of rural finance on industrial integration of rural primary, secondary and tertiary industries. Design/methodology/approach Using household-level data collected by Third National Agricultural Census and the provincial-level data collected from Wind database, the authors estimated the impacts of rural finance on rural industrial integration using Logit and Probit regression models. Further, the authors examined how the effect of rural finance varies with the age and education of householders, and with household and provincial characteristics by investigating the moderating effect. Findings The findings show that rural finance has a significant and positive effect on promoting farmers’ participation in new agricultural management organizations. This effect is more obvious in families whose householders are 40–50 years old, or families that have more educated members. This is because the middle-aged or educated people are more willing to accept and take part in industrial integration. The results further indicate that rural finance has a greater effect on industrial integration in provinces with a high degree of marketization, and in provinces with the high output value of industries and services in agricultural intermediate input. Originality/value The authors investigated the impact of rural finance on rural industrial integration empirically, and this topic is rarely covered before. The findings of this study also enrich the literature on financial development and economic growth as well as provide policy suggestions on how to promote rural industrial integration.

Since smallholders accounted for a high proportion of 98.1% among the 207 million agricultural business households across China, it is particularly important to study the impact of farmland size on the provision of public goods attached to the public sector industries from the perspective of the irrigation collective action in rural areas. Based on the survey data of 283 villages in China, this paper finds that the farmland size has a positive impact on irrigation collective action, although the average of per capita farmland area is only 0.214 hectares in each household of China. Therefore, it is necessary to promote the farmland scale operation by land circulation, so as to improve the ability of collective action and the development of public sector industries in rural areas of China.

Abstract During the turn of the twentieth century, the Goose Hill neighborhood in East St. Louis, Illinois, was predominantly a working-class population largely employed at the National Stockyards and its related industries. Many people in Goose Hill lived in multifamily homes or rentals, though a few did own homes. In this study, foodways comparisons between inhabitants of a boardinghouse, a long-term stable household, and a high-turnover tenancy highlight differences and similarities between such divergent types of households. It also illustrates and provides a discussion of priorities and consumer preferences within each household. This case study presents one viable way in which such a methodological framework can be used to approach interpretation of turn-of-the-twentieth-century urban archaeological sites and assemblages. It also highlights the strengths and shortcomings of such a multi-evidentiary approach.

Small-scale and Household Manufacturing Industry can contribute to economic development by providing employment; creating jobs with low capital costs: building up a reservoir of skilled and semi-skilled labour; reducing income disparities as small-scale manufacturing is widespread and not concentrated in any specific area or region; developing indigenous technology and raising saving and investment within the country rather than being dependent on external sources. Small-scale manufacturing is also a potential breeding ground for the development of entrepreneurial talent which is of great importance in accelerating the developmental process. In Pakistan, the importance of the small-scale manufacturing industry has not been given its due recognition. The various five-year plans mention small-scale industry but focus their main attention in other areas. For example, to quote from the First Five-Year Plan (1955 - 60):

Abstract:
The future of the industrial development of this nation depends to a large extent on the growth and development of the potentials of small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs). Small scale industries play a considerable role in the employment of manpower and productivity, distribution of income across the regions through increased investments and profits. In fact, they are termed ‘rural developing motors’. The objective of this study is to highlight the roles and constraints of small scale industries in the rural development of Edo state. The data collected were obtained through field observations, oral interviews and questionnaire administration. The data received were analysed using statistical techniques. Findings revealed that small scale industries have seriously impacted in the area of employment and household income generation. It also shows that there is lack of management skills, poor record keeping and weak access to financing.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to analyze the roles of industries in the national economy of Japan. The study employs Input-Output (IO) analysis as an analyis tool. More specifically, this study uses the parts of IO analysis, namely simple output multiplier, simple household income multiplier, index of the power of dispersion, and index of the sensitivity of dispersion as analysis devices. The analysis period of this study is 2011-2015. The results show that the consistency of several industries in influencing the Japanese national economy on the analysis period could be seen from both multipliers. Besides, the characteristics of almost all Japanese industrial sectors on the period of analysis did not change.

Abstract:
Tempeh is a traditional soybean product from Indonesia. It is a high-protein food whose cost per unit is cheaper than any other animal protein sources. However, processes undertaken by tempeh industries will produce waste. To produce tempeh needs a lot of water used for boiling, soaking, leaching, and peeling the soybeans. The problem is that tempeh industries have not undertaken wastewater management properly, which potentially causes the quality of tempeh industrial wastewater to exceed the prescribed quality standard, having negative impact on both the environment and the people living around those industries. This research aims to describe tempeh industrial wastewater management. It is mixed-methods research employing qualitative and quantitative methods, especially through literature review, observation, interviews, and laboratory analysis. Research findings show that the alternative waste management suitable for tempeh industries is to utilize wastewater by considering environmental, social, and economic aspects. Such utilization is carried out by making liquid organic fertilizer and biogas from a mixture of household organic waste. These research findings refer to SDGs’ agenda, especially the goal no. 6 (six), i.e. to improve water quality by reducing pollution from wastewater.

Abstract:
Today, in world practice, a rapid increase in the rate of generation of household and industrial waste is noticeable, and Vietnam, as a developing country, this problem is especially tangible. With the development of industry and technology, one of the most problematic industries in terms of waste generation is the electrical and electronic equipment industry. The products of this industry are tightly integrated into all other sectors of human life, whether it is production (refrigeration equipment, machine tools, computers, monitors, communications, etc.) or everyday life (household appliances, mobile phones, game consoles, smart appliances, etc.). This article provides an analysis of the current situation with the recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment in Vietnam, and provides recommendations for solving this problem.
