Collins, Wilkie. Hide and Seek. Edited by Catherine Peters. Oxford University Press, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/owc/9780199555611.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
At the centre of Hide and Seek (1854) a secret waits to be revealed. Why should the apparently respectable painter Valentine Blyth refuse to account for the presence in his household of the beautiful girl known as Madonna? It is not until his young friend Zack Thorpe, who is in rebellion against his repressive father, gets into bad company and meets a mysterious stranger that the secret of Madonna can be unravelled. Wilkie Collins's third novel, dedicated to his life-long friend Dickens, is a story in which excitement is combined with charm and humour. In its mixture of the everyday and the extraordinary, Hide and Seek forms a bridge between the domestic novel and the sensational fiction for which Collins later became famous.

Abstract:
Since its humble beginnings at Seattle's Pike Place Market in 1971, Starbucks has grown to become an industry leader and household name. This book takes an in-depth look at the evolution of this dynamic and sometimes controversial corporation. Americans drink 400 million cups of coffee every day, and many of them come from the thousands of Starbucks coffeehouses across the country. But how much do you really know about the place you get your morning cup of Joe? Part of Greenwood’s Corporations That Changed the World series, this book provides readers with a richly detailed history of this famous coffeehouse chain. It traces Starbucks' meteoric rise from a small Seattle-based company to an international powerhouse, chronicling how the changing executive leadership affected corporate strategy and direction. It also explores how Starbucks has embraced and incorporated new technologies and innovations, as well as how the corporation has shaped and been shaped by important social causes. An unbiased look at the controversies that have surrounded Starbucks over the years will help readers better understand these contentious issues. This updated and expanded edition includes new chapters, current financial data, and coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on the company.

Maskaeva, Asiya, and Mgeni Msafiri. Youth unemployment hysteresis in South Africa: Macro-micro analysis. 20th ed. UNU-WIDER, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.35188/unu-wider/2021/954-9.

Full text
Abstract:
This study simulates the macro-micro economic impacts of the employment policy, focusing on hysteresis in youth unemployment in South Africa. Specifically, we apply a dynamic computable general equilibrium model to calibrate the 2015 South African Social Accounting Matrix to estimate, compare, and determine the impact of employment policy on youth unemployment as well as on aggregate economic outcomes. We simulate two scenarios where we reduce the import price of fuel by 20 per cent. Then, the total government savings from the reduced transport subsidy are reallocated to the education sector to support the unemployed youth. The research findings indicate that demand for youth labour increases in the long run, resulting in a decline in the unemployment rate. Moreover, the consumer price index decreased more than nominal income, thereby increasing household purchasing power and, potentially, easing poverty.

Godfrey, Donald G. Jenkins’ Motion Pictures. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252038280.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines C. Francis Jenkins' photographic inventions that he used to demonstrate motion pictures in a variety of applications. Despite losing in the early battle with Thomas J. Armat, Jenkins declared himself the inventor of the motion-picture projector. With the Phantoscope, he ventured into home and educational use. He would travel west, filming a Hopi Snake Dance, teach photographic expression, and invent fireproof protections for the projector. This chapter first provides an overview of Jenkins' first Phantoscopes and the patents he obtained for them before turning to his demonstrations of the use of motion pictures at home and in science. It then recounts Jenkins' use of his motion-picture camera to film the Hopi tribe in northeastern Arizona performing the Snake Dance. It also discusses the Jenkins Phantoscope Company's manufacturing of Phantoscopes for educational household use, along with Jenkins' other inventions such as the Marveloscope and a high-speed camera. Finally, the chapter considers Jenkins' promotion of the use of photography in education by teaching photographic expression.

Helliwell, John F., Haifang Huang, and Shun Wang. New Evidence on Trust and Well-Being. Edited by Eric M. Uslaner. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190274801.013.9.

Full text
Abstract:
Data from three large international surveys—the Gallup World Poll, the World Values Survey and the European Social Survey—are used to estimate income-equivalent values for social trust, with a likely lower bound equivalent to a doubling of household income. Second, the more detailed and precisely measured trust data in the European Social Survey (ESS) are used to compare the effects of different types of social and political trust. While social trust and trust in police are most important, there are significant additional benefits from trust in three aspects of the institutional environment: the legal system, parliament and politicians. The total well-being value of a trustworthy environment is estimated to be larger than that flowing from social trust alone. Third, the ESS data show that being subject to discrimination, ill-health or unemployment is much less damaging to those living in trustworthy environments. These resilience-increasing features of social trust hence lessen well-being inequality by channeling the largest benefits to those at the low end of the well-being distribution.
