This dissertation discusses shared rooms individuality space, that is revealed in a hostel, from concepts and fundamentals of interior design. The research was promoted by the request: “how individuality is shown in hostel shared rooms and which elements of interior design are able to stimulate this demonstration?” To understand how the individuality in hostel shared rooms is shown, is the principal aim of this research. It is a basic and quality feature task, related with the approaching. The data collection took place from a bibliographic survey as well a field research. Abstract:
The following is a critical preface and portion of a novel-in-progress produced during my master's program in creative writing at the University of North Texas. The preface analyzes the way time and point of view work together to create or determine structure in fiction, as well as provide added meaning. In order to explore these topics I focus on two novels, Joan Didion’s Play It as It Lays and Jennifer Egan’s A Visit from the Goon Squad, and speak to how these elements have influenced my own writing style in The Hostess. The Hostess is a story about a group of twenty-something’s working together in a restaurant located in a Mid-West, college town, told from multiple character perspectives, as they struggle to choose between pursuing their passions and creating stability in their lives.

A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and Economics
This Work Project aims to understand through strategic analyses the potential of creating a new type of accommodation in Portugal – the “Business Hostel” – a hostel targeting business travelers. Through three relevant strategic analyses, this study shows that this concept has high chances of succeeding. In Strategic Intent Based Planning, three (out of four) plausible future scenarios are favorable for the entry of this concept in the market. The Competitive Analysis provides an attractive overview for the current and future competitive environment of the hostel industry in Portugal. Last but not least it is demonstrated that the Business Hostel concept consists on a Blue Ocean Strategy according to Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne’s theory.

Abstract:
A waterfront hostel in the park Rålambshovsparken in central Stockholm is designed to target travelers who are tired of crowded tourist spots and seeking for some local places to stay. The design started from reading the site. By observing on site, redrawing the site plan and study on the historical materials, I began to discover and understand some clues left on the site from the past. The new hostel takes use of the fragmentary clues and links them together by a new logic. On the other hand, the tourist in Stockholm has the clear difference of peak season and off-season. The temporary floating dormitories on the water are beneficial to guests’ enjoyment of water during summer, as well as to removability during winter. A small monumental place reminding people of the former artist’s villa, connects the floating dormitories with the more permanent volumes on the top of the topography. As a result, the hostel with scattered volumes gets its own feeling of territory in a public park.

Leeming, Prudence Mary. "Turbidite-hosted gold deposits." Thesis, Rhodes University, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1005939.

Full text
Abstract:
Turbidite-hosted gold deposits contribute a significant proportion to world lode gold production and have also provided substantial gold to alluvial resources. Turbidity current deposits occur throughout geological time within Archaean greenstone belts, Proterozoic orogenic belts and rifted passive continental margins, and Palaeozoic geosynclines. Representing the end member of the sedimentary cycle, turbidites have the attribute of preservation not only on an individual bed basis but also due to below wave base accumulation in submarine deeps. Cyclic deposition according to the Bouma sequence punctuates turbidite deposition by a series of diastems. Accumulation of organic, pelagic and chemical sediments may concentrate gold to protore enrichment levels i n a primary sedimentary environment. Dewatering during diagenesis and low-grade metamorphism under reducing conditions may redistribute gold with transport as low energy organo- and thio-complexes. Gold may precipitate with diagenetic pyrite and silica near black shale and/or partially replace fine carbonate detritus. Gold solubility increases with high grade amphibolite facies metamorphism (T 400ºC) when efficient leaching of gold and transport by simple chloro- and hydroxychloro - complexes to lower greenschist regions takes place. Reduced permeability of turbidite strata induces hydrofracturing which focuses dewatering solutions. Gold is deposited due to pressure and temperature decrease or local changes in physico - chemico conditions caused by the reaction of fluids with wall rocks (reactive beds in turbidites are predominantly carbonaceous strata). The largest of turbidite - hosted goldfields are confined to back -arc or marginal sea basins with restricted oceanic circulation. The richest concentrations of gold occur proximal to the original source within the greenschist facies formations lowermost in a thick turbidite sequence and exhibit strong combined structural and lithological association. Turbidites represent important strata for the concentration and preservation of gold not only during sedimentation and diagenesis but also during later deformation and metamorphism.

Abstract:
The dissertation "Independent Hostels: the case of Lisbon" offers a systematic approach of a particular tourist accommodation type – hostel- in Lisbon, and its effectiveness for the image of the city as a tourist destination for young travelers. The hostels are a part of the supply sector of tourist accommodation in the budget segment, where there has been a market evolution, in a quantitative and qualitive matter, possibly as a consequence of contemporary Western society habits, where tourism experiences are increasingly valued at younger ages. The Power of Youth Travel Report (UNWTO, 2012) points out to the relevant extent of the youth travel market in international arrivals and tourism receipts. Hostels, the most frequently used accommodation type by this segment, have been adapted to the “new tourism” specifities, and presently offer a wide variety of answers meeting the specific needs of its target audience. The hostel supply in Lisbon city was choosen as a case study, for its strong growth in recent years, and its international proeminence for its good business practices. It has also contributed to a significant improvement of the ability to receive young tourists, based in a concept of tourist accommodation offering good price, location and informality. The importance of the youth travel market in the international tourism emphasizes today the hostel prominent role. The city of Lisbon is expected to benefit with an increase of young travelers arrivals, related with new travel habits, especially price sensitive, intensive user of information technologies and wide information-sharing on social networks and other platforms, among friends and acquaintances. This practice enhances the influence among potential tourists to Lisbon. In addition, it sustains a potencial gain towards long-term loyalty of young visitors who, satisfied with their visit to Lisbon, may return at a later stage, spending more, as they represent the adult tourists of the future. The findings of this study enhance the contribution of this accommodation sector for the consolidation of Lisbon’s image perceived in the youth segment. This dissertation relies on a conceptual reflection, embodied in the descriptive analysis of the case study. The methodological plan, designed for an integrated interpretation of primary and secondary information sources, allowed to lecture on the most important issue raised: what kind of opportunities brings the youth tourism segment to tourist destinations?

Abstract:
Pariwana Hostel Cusco is a company within the hotel industry aimed at providing affordable accommodation in private or shared dorms with activities that promote cultural exchange and social experiences, which began operations in 2009 and today has two other branches in Lima and Santiago de Chile. The purpose of the consultancy was to determine the key problem and propose the best alternative solution. Through an analysis of the company's current situation, it was determined that the main problem facing Pariwana Hostel Cusco is the decrease in the flow of sales in offline and online channels, with a decrease in sales of 84% by 2020. The company's goal is to overcome the crisis situation caused by the COVID-19 virus, achieve at least an annual income of 3.8 million soles for the next five years and to position itself as the best hostel chain in Latin America in 2026. Based on the situational analysis and meetings with the manager, it was determined that one of the main reasons for its low sales capacity is the low diffusion of the company in digital channels and the low adaptability in the changes of its target market. Through the findings derived from the analysis of the sector, the review of specialized literature, and successful international models, different alternatives have been proposed, highlighting among them, the implementation of a Digital Marketing strategy as the best option to achieve the established objectives, proposing an implementation of a plan with a fixed budget and performance indicators to project and measure the results, as well as to determine the viability and success of the project.

Abstract:
Nowadays in the world, energy usage effectiveness has always been an issue which blocks people’s development. How to effectively use the energy is becoming more and more important. Energy audit can appraise the energy usage condition of a building, and come up with improvement advices through systematic calculation and analysis the existing problems and reasons for energy wastes, in order to bring the object of effective usage of energy into reality. HiG student hostel 23 is situated in Gävle, a coastal city in the east of Sweden. There are three floors in Hostel 23, the first and second floor have 18 single rooms, 4 double rooms and 2 communal kitchens and the third floor is storeroom. The aim of this thesis is to explore indoor climate and energy use for this student hostel and find out the reason of the low temperature inside the room, seeking some ways to improve the thermal comfort inside the building during winter conditions. First, collect date from every part in energy balance by measurement and interview with administrator, then calculate and analyze the data. At last, the whole energy balance can be estimated. Through analyzing the whole energy balance, the suggestion is to change the window type and design a new ventilation system operating plan. Through the optimization, energy loss is reduced, and about 10% of the energy is preserved. Besides this, the building infiltration loss is too high through this energy audit; it states there still exists some problems. If these problems can be solved, it will be helpful to keep a good thermal comfort inside the building.

Abstract:
Today’s online content increases at an alarmingly rate which exceeds users’ ability to consume such content. Modern search techniques allow users to enter keyword queries to find content they wish to see. However, such techniques break down when users freely browse the internet without knowing exactly what they want. Users may have to invest an unnecessarily long time reading content to see if they are interested in it. Automatic text summarization helps relieve this problem by creating synopses that significantly reduce the text while preserving the key points. Steffen Lyngbaek created the SPORK summarization pipeline to solve the content overload in Reddit comment threads. Lyngbaek adapted the Opinosis graph model for extractive summarization and combined it with agglomerative hierarchical clustering and the Smith-Waterman algorithm to perform multi-document summarization on Reddit comments. This thesis presents WHISK as a pipeline for general multi-document text summarization based on SPORK. A generic data model in WHISK allows creating new drivers for different platforms to work with the pipeline. In addition to the existing Opinosis graph model adapted in SPORK, WHISK introduces two simplified graph models for the pipeline. The simplified models removes unnecessary restrictions inherited from Opinosis graph’s abstractive summarization origins. Performance measurements and a study with Digital Democracy compare the two new graph models against the Opinosis graph model. Additionally, the study evaluates WHISK’s ability to generate pull quotes from political discussions as summaries.

Thompson, Robert. "Commercially Hosted Orbiting Carbon Observatory (CHOCO) Concept." Digital Commons at Loyola Marymount University and Loyola Law School, 2009. https://digitalcommons.lmu.edu/etd/433.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary purpose of this Integrative project is to determine whether the mission objectives for NASA's Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO) could effectively be met on a persistent global basis via a commercially hosted payload concept. NASA's OCO satellite mission was designed to ""make the first space-based measurements of atmospheric carbon dioxide ""(Corporation, 2007). The OCO satellite, was destroyed during a failed launch attempt February 2009. The satellite was intended to be a science demonstration satellite with spot coverage and a delayed revist rate. In order for this important mission to be performed in an operational utility (e.g. Kyoto Treaty monitoring) it will be necessary that carbon emissions be measured with persistent global coverage. One potential cost-effective and medium risk solution to meeting the original OCO scientific mission may be achieved by hosting atmospheric carbon dioxide sensors on commercial satellites. An OCO replacement based upon multiple hosted payloads could potentially developed and launched for less than the cost of the first OCO standalone system and is tolerant to single case launch or on-orbit failures. This proposed Integrative Project will document the mission analysis, requirements derivation, trade studies, technology readiness, risk assessment, and ethical considerations necessary to determine whether the proposed hosted payload concept is technically feasible and potentially cost effective. A significant secondary objective of this project is to document lessons learned from the recently initiated US Air Force Commercially Hosted Infrared Payload (CHIRP) project and apply them to the Orbiting Carbon Observatory program. The two programs primary payloads have significant similarities including mass, volume, thermal requirements, power requirements, sensor type, and focal plane technology. The OCO sensor design and the CHIRP sensor are both refractive-optic based infrared sensors with very similar cryocooler requirements and detectors. This association allows lessons learned from the CHIRP proposal technical evaluation to be applied in a non-military sensitive context. Ultimately the design similarity paired with the scientific openness of the NASA science community should adequately document the application of lessons learned from the CHIRP technical evaluation to an important scientific mission for the global community.

Abstract:
Purpose – This study seeks to explore residents’ attitudes towards cultural events in Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB), South Africa. The study further discusses the cultural values and social realities of the diverse socio-economic landscape inherent to the city. Equally, the extent of stakeholder involvement has been reflected throughout the study as an indispensable requirement towards sustainable tourism in the city. The study presents that customising cultural events according to the cross-cultural typology has far-reaching consequences in enhancing the image of NMB and induces stakeholder engagement. This study is based on the notion of Social Capital and Stakeholder theory and draws on the multi-cultural phenomenon as the thrust of the study is based on attracting residents’ to cultural events. The literature study indicated that the concept of Social Capital and stakeholder collaboration are mutually exclusive and empirical analysis indicates a strong relationship between the factors relative to residents’ attitudes. Design/Methodology/Approach – This study is located in the positivism paradigm and comprises literature and exploratory research to examine the supposition between the independent variables and the attitudes of residents’ in the NMB. The independent variables underlined in the proposed model are embedded in the literature undertaken. Equally, the thrust of the study is underpinned in Social Capital theory and the Stakeholder theory and is evident throughout this study. In this study, the convenience sampling and snowball sampling methods were employed to obtain a representative sample of residents from the NMB. A questionnaire was used in this study to solicit responses pertaining to the biographical information and questions relating to the factors of perceived satisfaction of residents in the NMB in relation to cultural events. A total number of 3,659 residents participated in this study. The researcher conducted this study by means of testing the constructs of the measuring instrument employed, as well as providing a causal model of relationships between the independent variables and the residents’ attitudes of cultural events in NMB. Findings – The results confirm the reliability and validity of the scales tested on a sample of 3,659 residents, collected using the questionnaire in Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan area. The empirical analysis indicates relationships among the independent factors; Social Capital and Stakeholder Profile, where a Pearson’s correlation of 0.50 exists. Furthermore, descriptive findings indicate that there is an overall positive tendency in attitudes for cultural events in the city. The practical significance as identified in the Cohen’s d test for significance infers that the moderating factors in the conceptual model prove that age, area code, home language, ethnicity and home language exert influence in determining residents’ attitudes in the city. Practical Implications – This study identifies the importance of leveraging the cross-cultural typology underscored the Stakeholder theory. Equally, for destination marketing organisations (DMOs) this study can glean insights in respect of the profile of residents for cultural event marketing and their response as stakeholders in the organisation of a cultural event. Social Implications – This study aims to gain a better understanding of the residents’ attitudes of the cultural events hosted by the NMB, its Social Capital and its relationship with varying demographic niches and cultural-centric insights that align to the ideologies pertaining to global citizenship. Originality/Value – This present study makes a contribution to the theories of Social Capital and Stakeholder theory by investigating its roles in determining residents’ attitudes of cultural events in a city. Moreover, it discusses the role of the factors as inducing variables for residents’ motivation by employing marketing principles related to the unique and emotional selling proposition philosophy. Equally, the study espouses the significance of promoting cultural events to extent that it acts as a platform to promote socio-economic development; employment opportunities, improved living standards, improving city infrastructure and environmental protection of a destination and justifies the expedition of Social Capital on the attitudes of residents’.

The identification of the dimensions that provide the satisfaction of the clients in means of lodging is an opportunity for these equipments to be loyal to their clients and to differentiate in relation to the quality before their competitors. The hostels are part of a segment that is expanding and presents an audience with specific characteristics and needs distinct from traditional tourists. In this context, the objective of the study was to propose a methodology for evaluating the quality of hostel equipment, based on the radar of innovation and the perceptions of satisfaction of its guests. To this end, the present research makes a review of the literature on these topics for radar construction and subsequent validation of the instrument in equipment located in three of the main tourism induction destinations in Pernambuco. Thus, ten dimensions were created that address the essential attributes for hostel guests, quantified in each of the twenty-nine questions that comprise them. The HOSTQUALI qualifies the analyzed hostels in five stages of quality below: Deficient, Weak, Moderate, Good and Excellent. Finally, HOSTQUALI can be considered an adequate method for quality evaluation in this type of hosting environment, besides being innovative for addressing the quality theme in this follow-up.

Grainger, Susan Elizabeth. "Palaeolatitudinal controls of Phanerozoic sediment-hosted mineral deposits." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/1014.

Full text
Abstract:
The distribution of Phanerozoic sediment-hosted mineral deposits appears to be influenced by latitudinal zoning. The palaeolatitudes of the host rocks were determined using standard palaeomagnetic procedures - the most reliable results being for the Mesozoic and Cenozoic with early Palaeozoic palaeolatitudes least reliable. The palaeolatitudes derived from Tarling and BP palaeogeographic reconstructions are in general agreement i. e. +/- 10°, although greater discrepancies occur for India and Central America. It is shown that some types (e. g. sandstone copper, sandstone lead) have a preference for low latitude arid regions whilst conditions in the equatorial and temperate rainfall belts were more favourable to the formation of other deposits (e. g. sandstone uranium-vanadium, oolitic ironstone). Using climatic modelling assuming uniformitarianism of the principles governing the Earth's atmospheric and oceanic circulation patterns, the climatic conditions affecting the distributions of sediment-hosted deposits were evaluated. It is concluded that local climatic effects are influential in the genesis of limestone base-metal, oolitic ironstone, sandstone copper, sandstone lead, shale base-metal, sedimentary exhalative, sandstone uranium-vanadium, manganese, laterite and phosphate deposits. These climatic conditions affect the nature and degree of chemical weathering, erosion, abundance of organic matter, ground water chemistry and volume in a particular region. However in some instances, such as placer deposits, the major control on deposit distribution was the availability and distribution of source rocks. Such palaeolatitudinal/palaeoclimatic control on the distribution of some deposit types places genetic constraints upon their formation. It also has obvious implications in the evaluation of potential sites for exploration and development.

This article intends to address the commercial hospitality at Hostel Che Lagarto Copacabana, focusing on the proposals by author Camargo (2004). Such type of lodging has a different way of accommodating guests, because it offers a friendly and economical environment with good quality services that try to satisfy the guests, further providing an exchange of experiences at the place, through a cultural interchange among tourists from all over the world. The methodology used in this article is an exploratory qualitative research, whose general purpose was to study commercial hospitality, focusing on the categories of receiving, lodging, feeding, and entertaining. The data collected made us see the hostel under a different light as a commercial space, because it is no longer only a place to lodge for profitable purposes, but further, it is a place where the employees care to make the atmosphere friendly, and chiefly to keep learning every day how to receive the guests so well that they will come back to stay there in the future.

Wilkinson, Mark. "Sandstone-hosted concretionary cements of the Hebrides, Scotland." Thesis, University of Leicester, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/34983.

Full text
Abstract:
The geometries of the sandstone-hosted calcite concretions of the Jurassic Valtos Sandstone Formation and Bearreraig Sandstone Formation are described and related to the processes operating during concretion growth. As concretionary bodies analogous to those studied form potential permeability barriers within some North Sea petroleum reservoirs; the relationship between the growth processes and permeability barrier formation is examined. The growth times for model spherical concretions are calculated for the complex carbonate-water system. Two growth processes are modelled, solute transport and surface reaction. Growth times for a 1m diameter concretion forming under geologically reasonable conditions are predicted to be 22.3Ma, which reduces to 8.8Ma in porewaters flowing at 1m/year. The depth of formation of the concretions is assessed, through an examination of depth dependent properties of both the host-sediment and the calcite cement, and is found to be less than 500m. Concretion formation preceeded the Paleocene igneous activity which affected the Hebrides. The majority of the concretions examined formed at burial depths which were too great to allow effective contact between the concretions and seawater. The major source of carbonate was the dissolution of aragonitic shell material from within the host sandbody. The nature of the porewaters from which the concretions formed is assessed. The majority were meteoric in origin, though some marine influence is noted. The minor element contents of the cements cannot be used to calculate porewater compositions, as disequilibrium between the porewaters and the cements can be demonstrated. A model is proposed to account for the minor element patterns. Crystal breeding can be demonstrated to have occurred during concretion growth. A hypothesis is presented to explain the petrographic features of a typical Valtos Sandstone Formation concretion.

The main objective of this project is to develop a Marketing plan for the launch of a new Hostel. This new Hostel would be located in the "Areais de Santa Bárbara" area in the Azorean island of São Miguel and it follows an innovative concept. The main focuses are to identify the target and to create a tactic of launching and entering the market. The methodology used is based on a mix-method research. It started with a qualitative research of secondary data relevant to the topic, using the latest and strongest possible sources. This was done in order to make the project, as far as possible, correct and solid. A questionnaire survey was also conducted, aiming to define and identify the target. This survey served as the basis for most of the points developed. Very succinctly, it may be said that some important conclusions were drawn. First, the target is composed of young tourists traveling in groups, willing to discover new spaces, second, the definition of a strong concept can make a difference. It was tried to take into account, for the development of this project, all the external factors, such as threats and opportunities that could somehow guide the plan towards a strong market entry.

The means of lodging, as important components for the tourist activity, have a set of elements that contribute to the competitiveness of the sector. The hostels are one of these elements, and in particular, they have been highlighted because they have the opportunity to offer the exchange of experiences to their guests. In this sense, knowledge about the behavioral changes of its consumers becomes important for the generation of competitive advantage, considering the complexity of the study of consumer behavior and the factors that influence choice decisions. The importance of identifying consumer values, whether intrinsic or extrinsic, is emphasized. This research presents as main objective, the analysis of the motivational attributes to choose the hostels as means of lodging. The methodology used to reach the goal proposed in this study consists of two steps: first, the questionnaire was applied, containing six closed-ended questions to identify the profile of the new consumer of hostels in Brazil; Then online focus groups were conducted through the Messenger application in order to identify the main attributes of hostel choice. Thus, the research is characterized as exploratory-descriptive, with a qualitative approach. For the analysis of the data, NVivo 11 software was used with ways to facilitate the critical interpretation of the content.
The tourism comes, with time, is increasingly gaining strength in a shied named Best Age. In this shied, the hospitality is gaining each time more importance and turning itself in a decisive factor to the choice of a hosting place that will suit as a temporary home for tourists while they are away of their homes. The tourists that are part of this population shied called Best Age come choosing simpler receptive lodgings like Hostels, or Youth Hostel, than Hotels, for the difference of price but also for adding other important factors. Are these hosting places ready to receive this new demand? Therefore, the present article proposes to identify and profile of this new demand, as well as their needs and preferences, through field surveys made with a sample of this segment, in order to know how the hosting places are preparing to receive them.

Abstract:
Over time, there has been a growth in the hostel sector, due to the increase in tourism demand by young people, the context of the global economic crisis, and the decrease in purchasing power of individuals, who wanted to continue to travel and experience new cultures, with minimal associated costs. The relevance of hostels, both in the economy and in the culture of the region, place, destination, or country, led to the need to analyze the main motivations inherent to the choice of a hostel in the travel/visit destination. Thus, the objective of this dissertation is to understand to analyze the profile of tourists who choose hostels in the city of Évora. To meet this challenge, we chose to adopt a quantitative approach methodology, by applying questionnaire surveys to tourists staying in hostels in the historic center of the city of Évora. The main results found that Évora is on track to be a destination of choice for tourists who want to stay in hostels, due to its cultural and intangible heritage, namely monuments, gastronomy, and wines.

Abstract:
The question of sexual difference is missing from Maurice Merleau-Ponty's existential phenomenology and from Jacques Derrida's theory of hospitality. I address these gaps by using a feminist phenomenological perspective to read modernist representations of the “hostess”. I argue for a broadened understanding of “hosting” that encompasses how women use their lived bodies to tend to the social and physical needs of other lived bodies. In chapter one, I use Virginia Woolf's work to discover the “perfect” party‐giving hostess. I suggest that the heroic hosting of party‐giving is predicated on a more habitual, daily form of hosting. In the subsequent chapters, I explore the developmental stages in the life of the hostess. In chapter two, I read Woolf and Merleau--‐Ponty in tandem to witness the initiation of the hosting mentality in the childhood home. In chapter three, I close read descriptions of adolescent girls dancing in Virginia Woolf, Elizabeth Bowen, and Katherine Mansfield alongside the work of Iris Marion Young, to reveal the objectification of young female bodies as “future hostesses”. My fourth chapter focuses on maternal hospitality. Inspired by Luce Irigaray, I argue that D. H. Lawrence, James Joyce, and Merleau‐Ponty problematically appropriate maternal hospitality. Mina Loy contributes a female modernist perspective of the lived bodily experience of childbirth. In my final chapter, I discuss hospitality and death. With James Joyce, D. H. Lawrence, and Virginia Woolf, I explore the “funeral‐giving hostess”. Finally, I conclude with a discussion of “hosting‐after‐death” as a way to describe the bodily and social care that women perform, or fail to perform, for what I term “lived dead bodies” in Lawrence's work. Throughout, I contend that failing to adequately recognise women's habitual and heroic hospitality devalues the important work that women perform for other bodies throughout their lives. In doing this, I carve a space for the hostess within traditional discourses of hospitality, and I develop the discussion of female‐bodies‐in‐situation that Merleau‐Pontian phenomenology lacks.

Abstract:
Most universities have long recognised the importance and contribution of on-campus hostels to the learning process. In so doing, most of these institutions have provided and maintained building facilities for academic purposes (teaching and research). Hostels are integral components of most campuses of Nigerian universities, and they are part of the built assets of the institutions in terms of both administration and maintenance management. Currently, there is little understanding of the maintenance management systems of on-campus hostel buildings in both the public and the private universities. Moreover, there is a dearth of research evidence demonstrating that there is an appreciable difference in the maintenance management systems of the Federal, State and private universities in Nigeria. This research aimed at establishing an understanding of maintenance management systems of on-campus hostel buildings at Nigerian universities owned by the Federal and State governments and the Private Sector, relative to stipulated criteria for best practice. The qualitative method of research inquiry that is rooted in the phenomenological paradigm was employed in the investigations. The research activities included a comprehensive review of the related literature and study of selected cases. The North-central geopolitical zone of Nigeria was the selected geographical scope of this research. Ten universities were purposefully selected for the study, and they include three Federal, four state and three private universities. The nature and differences in the research questions necessitated generating different forms of data. The questions that were related to the maintenance management systems for the hostels in place at the universities were addressed with the outcomes of interviews with the hostel managers. The questions that were about the structures and current conditions of the hostel buildings at the three categories of universities were addressed with data that were generated from condition assessments of the facilities and physical observations with the aid of cameras. The study reveals apparent deteriorated and unhealthy conditions of most of the on-campus hostels at the public universities, while those of the private universities are satisfactory. The research also found that the maintenance management systems in use at all the universities are reactive and lack proper planning and coordination of maintenance activities. There is no significant difference in the maintenance management systems of hostels at the public and the private universities and the systems have major negative impact on the conditions of the buildings and their performances. The research has developed a conceptual model for the study of maintenance management informed by the theoretical framework. The model considered the impact of the external environmental factors on the management and maintenance of the hostels. Secondly, the interrelationships of strategic and performance management with maintenance management in developing an effective maintenance management system were established. The study has achieved its aim of establishing an understanding of maintenance management systems of on-campus hostel buildings at Nigerian universities owned by the Federal and, State governments and the Private Sector. The maintenance management model developed in the study is recommended to maintenance management departments as a guide for effective maintenance of the built facilities in their institutions.
