Ryan, Justin M. "Geometry of horizontal bundles and connections." Diss., Wichita State University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10057/10941.

Full text
Abstract:
An Ehresmann connection on a fiber bundle pi: E --> M is defined by prescribing a suitable horizontal subbundle H of the tangent bundle piT: TE --> E. For a horizontal bundle to be suitable, it must have a property called horizontal path lifting. This property ensures that the horizontal bundle determines a system of parallel transport between the fibers of E. The main result of this dissertation is a geometric characterization of the horizontal bundles on E that have horizontal path lifting, and hence are connections. In particular, it is shown that a horizontal bundle has horizontal path lifting if and only if its horizontal spaces are bounded away from the vertical spaces, uniformly along fibers of E. In order for a horizontal bundle to admit a system of parallel transport or have holonomy, it must be a connection. However, certain other geometric properties that are usually attributed to connections are actually properties of arbitrary horizontal bundles. These properties are studied in the case when E is either a vector bundle or tangent bundle, accordingly.

The increasing of using precast concrete panels, lack of standardization, lack of studies on precast concrete panels and its connections devices on Brazil, has led to the need of manual and design criteria of precast concrete panel connections. Although the designers and precast concrete panel manufacturers is using foreign standards when its available and their empirical knowledge on the specification and connections design criteria, the lack of manuals become hard to find solutions that provide easiness of precast concrete panel s employment. Connections are fundamental part of the precast structures. For the building assembly are necessary linking devices which influences the production process, the efficiency of casting, storage, transport, handling and especially in the assembly on site. This work presents the concept, technical features and functions of main types of spandrel panel connections and the main structure of building, and identifies typical connections and the general design recommendation. This report purpose the put in connection as a new classification of connection type.

Abstract:
The topic of this master‘s thesis was to create a settlement structure on the territory of the cadastral territory of the town of Náměšť nad Oslavou. Specifically in the southwestern part of the town, in the places of today's agricultural areas. The main goal of the thesis is to create a quality residential structure for the entire area, which will connect to the surrounding development, to create a center with urban amenities for this newly designed neighborhood. A key aspect of the design is the transport connection to the existing road network of the city and overcoming the barrier formed by the railway line. The proposed development responds to the current and future anticipated needs of the city. Taking into account the size, the proposed area is divided into three parts with regard to the time sequence and the nature of the development. From an urban point of view, the first phase builds on the existing network of streets and creates a transition between the original and the proposed development and proposes transport connections to the area. In the second and third phase, the remaining area of the proposed area is resolved, by a system of regular streets designed in places with a small slope of the terrain, connected by short streets with a higher slope. The master‘s thesis addresses the connection between the city and greenery, increases the attractiveness of the area by designing public facilities and services and works with visual axes from the existing housing and commercial development to the proposed location.

Full text
Abstract:
Full-depth precast panels are used in concrete bridges to provide several benefits such as faster construction, lower cost and reduced constructional hazard. However, one construction drawback is that connectors are required to transmit horizontal shear across the interface between the girder and deck. Shear connector performance is characterized by a series of experiments performed on part of a bridge system that mimics a full-depth precast deck on concrete girder with a pocket-connector-haunch system. Following initial breakaway of the adhesive bond within the haunch region, the specimens slide with frictional resistance provided by the clamping force of the anchor bolt. This leads to bolt yield with an observed sliding friction coefficient of 0.8 (+/- 20%) with lower values occurring at higher displacements. It is concluded that for a viable connector system to be developed a key feature is to have sufficient stirrups in the neighborhood of the anchor bolt to form a non-contact splice and to ensure the high pull-out force can be sustained without leading to premature beam failure. The successful implementation of a full-depth precast deck-panel system requires the use of a viable design methodology that properly accounts for system behavior. The design of a deck-haunch-girder system uses a truss modeling approach to design for the shear forces created by service loading. The truss model approach is considered more suitable for a concrete member due to the premise that the member will be substantially cracked at an ultimate limit state and that traditional beam theory does not account for the decreased ability of shear stresses to transfer across open cracks. Experimental results from Chapter II, such as the friction coefficient mu, are used along with a previously developed crack angle model to layout the geometry of the truss within a deck-panel span. Design solutions are presented utilizing the Rock Creek Bridge in Parker County, Texas as an example structure.

Jeans, Rhiannon. "Form perception and neural feedback: insights from V1 and V2." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/12731.

Full text
Abstract:
In the brain, every cortical inter-area feedforward projection shares a reciprocal feedback connection. Despite its pervasive nature in the brain, our understanding of the functional role of neural feedback in form perception remains incomplete, particularly in behaving animals. This problem is addressed in humans with a novel form completion paradigm. Seven subjects (5 female) had their EEG waveforms analysed using three linear models showing non-significant differences between stimulus conditions designed to produce differences by manipulating neural feedback to V1. Two of these subjects (one female), in addition to EEG waveforms, had combined magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and functional MRI (fMRI) cortical maps that allowed anatomically close areas such as V1 and V2 to have their signals decomposed and neural feedback inferred. Differences between stimulus conditions arose once signals had been divided into V1 and V2. Significant differences (p < .05) for one subject in V1 and V2 suggests cortical interactions at 100ms and 350ms. This suggests the form completion paradigm has utility at investigating the influence of the V2 far receptive field surround on V1, given future given signal to noise issues are resolved.

Objectives: The stress around implants has been considered to affect the prognosis of implant therapy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of platform switching on the peri-implant bone strain in dental implants with external and internal connections, with strain gauge technique, under three different loads: the central vertical load, the lingual vertical load, the horizontal load. The other purpose was to evaluate whether increasing the degree of horizontal offset resulted in decreasing the peri-implant bone strain. Methods: Four types of implant:external hex connection and internal hex connection platform implant(OSSEOTITE® Parallel Walled Implants, BIOMET 3i, Palm Beach Gardens,USA), length 13㎜ with different diameter 5.0 ㎜, 6.0 ㎜, were embedded in a 20 x 22 x 70 mm (width x height x length) epoxy resin block. Four strain gauges (EA-00-031CE-350) were bonded on resin surface adjacent to the buccal, mesial , lingual , and distal side of the implant platform. A CAD-CAM 10 x 10 x 11.5 ㎜ (width x length x height) tetragonal column customized abutments was fabricated. Three types of load were applied (vertical loads at two locations:the central vertical load, the lingual vertical load, and a horizontal load) with three different intensities (10N, 30 N and 50N). Each load was repeated 10 times and the data from the strain gauge were recorded and analyzed. Results: 1. Under the central vertical load, the platform switching design did not change peri-implant bone strain tendancy significantly. 2. Under the lingual vertical load, there was a tendency that the platform switching design decreased peri-implant bone strain. The greater amount of horizontal shifting, the smaller the peri-implant bone strain. When the applied load was larger, the tendency of reduced bone strain became more statistically significant. 3. Under the horizontal load, the trend was similar to that under lingual vertical load. 4. There was a difference between external hex connection and internal hex connection groups. Under the off-axis load, the reduction percentage of peri-implant bone strain in platform switching group of the internal hex connection group was not as large as that of the external hex connection. Conclusions: The data suggested that under off-axis load, there was a trend that the platform switching design decreased peri-implant bone strain in both external and internal connection groups. The greater amount of horizontal shifting, the smaller the peri-implant bone strain. When the applied load was larger, the tendency become more statistically significant. However, the reduction percentage in peri-implant bone strain in platform switching group of the internal hex connection group was not as large as that of the external hex connection under the off-axis force application.
