Abstract:
Various measures have been recommended by different committees to improve the access, equity and quality status of higher education in Kerala. One of the major recommendations was initiated in the form of a pilot study with the commencement of honours course in English, Economics, Maths and Commerce subject at undergraduate level. This comparative study is an attempt to study the effectiveness of undergraduate English honours course, which commenced at Women’s College, Thiruvananthapuram in 2012. Comparison has been made between the learning outcomes of final year students from BA English (general) and BA English (honours) courses. The sample was tested on similar topics/sub-subjects taught in their course through an achievement test, oral test, extempore, tutorial observation and script play. An open discussion was also conducted with students and teachers to know their insight about the course. Findings of the study show positive impact of the honours course on the achievement of the learner. But, both the groups were found to be at the same platform in communication skill. Lastly, recommendations are made to bring improvement in the newly introduced English honours course to improve its quality in terms of learning outcomes.

Abstract:
It is indeed a privilege for me to join Dr Naved Hamid in paying tribute to Dr Parvez Hasan, an outstanding economist recognised for his work on development economics, on the economy of Pakistan, and the East Asian economies. The Pakistan Society of Development Economists honours him today for his contribution to. economics, to the development of the Pakistan economy and to the economic profession in Pakistan. Dr Naved Hamid has recalled Dr Parvez Hasan illustrious career. In my tribute to Dr Parvez Hasan I want to put his life and career in the broader context of the times he lived in and the important institutions in which he served and their development to which he contributed. To me the life of Dr Parvez Hasan, as so wonderfully captured in his recently published autobiography, "My Life My Country-Memoirs of a Pakistani Economist", is a story which covers not only the creation and early years of Pakistan's independence but is the story of its nascent years and the rise of the profession of economists in Pakistan. It is also the story of three remarkable economists, whose lives and careers were closely intertwined and of three great institutions which were to playa pioneering role in the economic development of Pakistan as well as in laying the foundation of serious analytical and applied research on emerging economic issues confronting the country.

I was born in Windsor, Ontario on 25 May 1943, the first child of William Robert Moggridge and Doris Livingston Moggridge. The surname Moggridge comes from Celtic Devon. Add in Livingston and my maternal grandmother's Lennox, the Celtic tinge gets stronger. The Hulls on my paternal grandmother's side reduce it, but there were Camerons in that gene pool. Both of my parents were University of Toronto graduates: my father in Metallurgical Engineering (1934) and my mother in Honours Philosophy and English (1933) and Library Science (1934).

Nair, Janaki. "Modernity and ‘publicness’: The career of the Mysore matha, 1880–1940." Indian Economic & Social History Review 57, no. 1 (January 2020): 5–29. http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/0019464619892891.

Abstract:
Fin de siècle Mysore witnessed the gathering force of interminable rivalries of prestige between mathas (monastic institutions). Contests over the types and number of honours enjoyed by travelling gurus in Mysore became frequent, reaching a crescendo in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. By this time, the contests were also being adjudicated in courts, as the Mysore administration began to exert greater bureaucratic control over these institutions. The widening sphere of engagements of the modernising matha reveals that a new notion of publicness was taking shape, co-constituted by a triangulation of forces: on one side was the rapidly bureaucratising Mysore state which brought a different visibility and public accountability to the matha; a second side comprised the matha itself developing a new, socially purposive public life. Finally, the matha’s redefinition was aided and shaped by the adherents of the matha, emerging as a ‘public’ which both drew on and remained at a remove from its caste identity. This period of reform had enduring consequences, as the Mysore matha took on a supplementary state form after Indian Independence in 1947.

Goldstein, Robin. "Economic Experiments in Honor of Thorstein Veblen." Thesis, Bordeaux, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019BORD0075/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Thorstein Veblen, author of The Theory of the Leisure Class (1899), is memorialized in economics by the “Veblen effect,” a term introduced by Harvey Leibenstein to represent a positive consumer demand response to an increase in price. However, Leibenstein’s 1950 QJE article introducing the world to the “Veblen effect” does not cite Veblen as one of its 17 references.I begin this dissertation by revisiting Veblen’s theory of consumer behavior and evaluating its subsequent treatment in the economics literature. I find that Leibenstein (1950) misunderstands Veblen’s concept of “conspicuous consumption” and contradicts Veblen’s empirical predictions. How might Veblen’s theory be interpreted more faithfully with relevance to present-day markets? I suggest that the notion of “Veblen goods” and “Veblen consumers” is misleading, because Veblen’s theories applied to nearly all goods and consumers. My alternative approach is to look for attributes and corresponding prices whose market behavior is in line with Veblen’s predictions. I divide the attributes of goods into three classes, and I suggest that each class has its own hedonic price component: “useful,” “decorative,” and “invisible” attributes.Invisible attributes cannot be detected by the consumer’s own unaided sensory apparatus. Examples of invisible attributes are a good’s market price, scarcity, reputation, ratings, place of origin, microbial content, organic certification, and age. I refer to decorative and invisible attributes, together, as “Veblen attributes”; and I refer to the premiums consumers are willing to pay for Veblen attributes as “Veblen premiums.”In this thesis, I attempt to observe some Veblen attributes and Veblen premiums in present-day consumer markets. I report experimental results from the U.S. retail markets for beer (part II), wine (part III), and food (part IV). I employ a variety of experimental techniques, including consumer surveys, blind tasting experiments, lab experiments, and undercover experiments. I include several first-person essays to round out the narrative

Reed, Robert. "Buy American: Can Businesses Capitalize on the Calls for Patriotic Spending?" Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2013. https://dc.etsu.edu/honors/95.

Full text
Abstract:
This research analyzes the business opportunities created by the "Buy American" movement. Current literature reflects a consensus that most consumers have an initial bias in favor of purchasing domestic products. However, domestic production is frequently more costly than producing abroad. In order for domestic production to increase a firm's profit, consumer willingness to pay more for domestic products is prerequisite. This study investigates whether that prerequisite is satisfied. By collecting revealed preference data from multiple locations, this study finds that, on average, domestic products do carry a price premium over similar foreign imports.

Thomas, Jamie. "Financial Solvency of the American Government." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2012. https://dc.etsu.edu/honors/28.

Full text
Abstract:
The main topic of this paper is the financial solvency, or “the ability to pay all debts,” of the United States government (“solvency,” n.d.). The questions posed and analyzed are 1) is the American government solvent, 2) did Standard and Poor’s accurately downgrade the American debt, and 3) how does the national debt affect the solvency of the American government. To determine the solvency and effects of debt, analysis of financial information for America and nine other countries, grouped according to their credit rating is used. Solvency is determined by credit rating for this analysis; a country with a high credit rating of AAA will be considered extremely solvent, with each downgrade showing a more at risk country. The appropriate credit rating for the United States will be determined by comparing the information and noting where the United States stands in relation to the other countries for four key economic indicators. Also, analysis of standard lending rules applied to America’s financial information shows whether or not the amount of debt America holds is safe compared to what requirements are expected of individuals. Appendices show more detailed solvency analyses for the ten countries, at present and over the past thirty years. The results of the study show that solvency could be a future problem for the American government. It has only adequate capacity to repay its debt and should not have received a AA+ rating from Standard and Poor’s. A BBB+ rating would have been more appropriate. Also, applying standard lending rules to the American debt shows that it exceeds the 40% debt-to-income standard, making the likelihood of debt repayment, or solvency, low based on standards used in the financial lending sphere.

Shelton, Stuart N. "How World War II Affected the Economic and Social Life of East Tennessee." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2017. https://dc.etsu.edu/honors/427.

Full text
Abstract:
Much has been written about America’s entry into World War II. However, little attention has been given to the war’s effects on the social and economic lives of the people of East Tennessee who both benefited and suffered from the presence of many wartime facilities and industries. World War II also affected those civilians living and working on the home front. While its men had to fight in foreign lands, the region had to deal with food, housing, and labor shortages, the changing roles of women and African-Americans, and even the presence of enemy prisoners of war. This paper intends to show how the people of East Tennessee both benefitted and suffered as a result of America’s entry into World War II. It will detail the role of local industries that in most cases changed from producing consumer goods to war material. Attention will be paid to key wartime facilities such as Oak Ridge Laboratory and Eastman Chemical. In addition, it will examine the effect that the war had on those East Tennesseans who served overseas and returned home to their families and communities changed forever. This paper will also show the extent to which East Tennessee women and African-Americans contributed to and were affected by the war effort as well as how their roles in society would be changed because of it. The use of enemy prisoners of war as labor on the home front will be elaborated upon as well. By examining these themes and topics, our citizenry today will have a better understanding of the sacrifices made to win World War II.

Abstract:
Sustainability and locally sourced goods are pressing issues in today’s society for many environmental, economic, and cultural reasons. Farmers markets are becoming a highly popular method of implementing these ideas. As universities have begun to address their own processes to support sustainable practices, appeal has grown for adding a farmers market on campus. Information pertaining to markets already created and the process of implementation is not readily available. This study seeks to explore the rationale for a campus farmers market as a sustainable development on a university campus and review the processes by which a market may be established as exemplified by the newly formed Farmers Market at East Tennessee State University.

Smolnycki, Adam. "A Study of the Effect of the 2008 Economic Crisis upon the Relationship between CEO Compensation and Firm Performance Measures." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2013. https://dc.etsu.edu/honors/74.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates the effect the 2008 economic crisis had on the relationship between CEO compensation and firm performance measures for S&P 500 financial companies. The findings assist S&P 500 financial companies to better determine compensation levels for CEOs by accounting for performance as well as account for the most recent valley in the economic cycle. The study uses a database of CEO compensation data for S&P 500 financial firms from both before and after the crisis. The database also contains firm performance data for the respective firms and years. The relationship is explored using separate multiple regression models, then comparing the strength of relationship in 2007-2008 and 2011-2012. The results find a significant difference in Salary amounts from before and after the crisis. The p-stat and t-stat values the study uses in determining the significance of variables find the only significant variable tested to be the one representing the difference in Salary amounts from before and after the crisis. Compared to other studies on similar topics, Revenues are decidedly less important in the S&P 500 financial sector than they are for other scopes of study as a whole. The study also discovers an alarming disconnect between stock and investor returns and compensation amounts.

Osborne, Elijah R. "Financial Literacy in Local At-Risk Appalachia." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2017. https://dc.etsu.edu/honors/375.

Full text
Abstract:
Unfortunately, rural Appalachia is perennially one of the poorest areas of the United States. Many scholars have offered opinions as to why this trend of poverty continues in this region, but one potential cause has not been the subject of much research: do residents in Appalachia have a functional knowledge of the financial system, or even a simple understanding of basic savings, which is necessary for achieving certain levels of financial security? We conduct a survey modeled after a national study which measures basic financial literacy in local Appalachia, expecting to find that at-risk Appalachians would have less financial literacy than the national average. While our initial response rate was too low to justify a concrete claim, our preliminary findings suggest that local at-risk Appalachians were more likely to incorrectly answer basic financial literacy questions, and we believe that a larger study into this issue is warranted. Should a concrete outcome arise in the affirmative, we offer suggestions for policy responses, including implementation of free personal finance classes to combat the issue.

Abstract:
[The final form of this paper was published in the journal Issues in Informing Science and Information Technology.] The significance of ICTs in supporting socio-economic development in developing countries is inevitable. As academics of information systems in developing countries, we cannot ignore the need for teaching and building the capacity of our students to become knowledgeable and skilled in Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICT4D) practice and discourse. Furthermore, it is vital to equip our students with the ability to apply their discipline knowledge in addressing some of the ICT discrepancies in current ICT4D practice in their own context. I introduced and teach the ICT4D module to the Honours level course at my university in South Africa. This paper explores the influencing aspects that shaped the development of the ICT4D module curriculum in the South African context I teach in. This provides a practice lens to motivate for and support the introduction of an ICT4D module in tertiary curricula in developing countries.

The aim of the research is to identify the most important problems that hinder an effective communication process between the mentor and the mentee in entrepreneurship based on expert opinions on the elements of and barriers to the communication process. The research results have revealed that mentors’ willingness to communicate, appropriately engaging in dialogue with their mentees, as well as honour and other skills and traits are essential. The experts have emphasized that it is important that the mentee does not take the mentor’s experience literally but critically assesses whether his/her resources are aligned with the goal. According to the experts, the most essential barriers to communication were a lack of time and logical barriers and obstacles that emerged to partners with different ways of thinking. Researchers need to continue the research started by the authors of the paper by working on and designing a communication model for mentors and mentees, taking into account the communication barriers identified in the present research and other factors relevant to communication in entrepreneurship.

Abstract:
Abstract Effective reservoir characterization approaches aim to integrate all available and reliable sources of data to mitigate the effects of uncertainty of reservoir parameters and have a robust reservoir model(s). Reservoir permeability is one of the most critical, and usually, uncertain parameters in reservoir simulation models. The permeability model has a direct impact on production forecasts and consequently the economics of decisions made based on reservoir models. Having a calibrated permeability model is a challenging task. In most cases, the permeability model undergoes several modifications to achieve a history-matched reservoir model that honors the historical pressure and production data. The objective of this work is to show a workflow that integrates two different types of data sources to help calibrate the permeability of reservoir models. The proposed approach relies on adjusting the permeability of reservoir models by integrating seismic amplitude values and data from wells’ pressure transient analyses. The seismic amplitude data in the vicinity of a candidate well is correlated with permeability obtained from recorded pressure transient data in a systematic way. The generated correlation is then applied to the entire reservoir model in order to calibrate the permeability value of each grid block in the model. The application of the proposed approach on actual field data is also presented. As a result, the seismic and pressure transient data both can make valuable contributions towards calibrating geo-cellular 3D reservoir models at their respective and different scales.

Abstract:
Abstract DME as a water-soluble solvent for enhanced oil recovery has been introduced and some study results of DME enhanced waterflooding have recently been reported. However, DME-based EOR has not yet been implemented because of high prices of DME, the consequent need to recycle and reinject DME, and uncertain incremental oil per injected DME. This paper describes new insights into the different aspects (lab, subsurface, and economic) of DME-based EOR technology. An experimental protocol was defined to study the IFT, viscosity, and density of DME-Oil-brine mixtures as a function of T, P, and salinity, and DME compatibility with heavy components (e.g., asphaltenes), and adsorption on minerals. A compositional fractured-reservoir dynamic model that honors the PVT characteristics of DME was developed to investigate the performance of DME flood into fractured and unfractured reservoirs with light and heavy crudes. A business case as a function of DME recycling efficiencies, incremental oil, and phase implementation was discussed. The experimental results revealed that the oil viscosity 31 cP is significantly reduced to below 2 cP when mixed with DME in small volume ratios. No asphaltene precipitation (asphaltene content = 6.4 wt%) was observed when the oil was mixed with DME at increasing ratios up to 80 v/v%. Compatibility tests with formation water (total salinity 9.2 wt%) showed that DME is soluble in the formation water without any incompatibility or salting-out effect. The DME partitioning into oleic phase improves when temperature and brine-salinity increase. Imbibition tests at 5 bars and 50°C with DME-saturated formation water and limestone core plugs (permeability: 1.3–2.2 mD) increased the ultimate recovery to 70%. The simulation results indicate that DME injection into unfractured reservoirs does not improve the displacement efficiency, but it accelerates oil production because of improved injectivity up to 30%. However, DME injection into heavy-oil fractured reservoirs can improve displacement efficiency initially by enhancing imbibition rates from the matrix to the fracture system. However, this improved displacement efficiency decreases as DME injection continues because of DME breakthrough and there will be a point at which the DME displacement efficiency becomes the same as water. Nonetheless, DME significantly increases the recovery factor from heavy-oil fractured reservoirs (up to 200%). The economic results demonstrate that to have an economic DME-based EOR technology, the DME-recycling efficiency must be higher than 80%, incremental oil must be higher than 15%, and development must be a phased development plan.

Abstract:
With the annexation of Bessarabia to the Russian Empire, not only economic, political and cultural changes took place, but also spiritual ones. The strengthening of the role of the Orthodox Church for the idea of the Russian press will take place with the launch by Nicholas I of the well–known triad: “Orthodoxy, autocracy, people” – the three pillars on which Russian statehood will be based. It is interesting that “orthodoxy” in this triad occupies the primordial place and this in a multinational and multi–denominational state, and “autocracy” is on second place giving way to the Church. This position of the Russian Orthodox Church existed before and has been preserved since, with slogans such as “For Faith, the Tsar and Fatherland” or “Russian God, Russian Tsar and Russian People”. Obviously, for this position, the Orthodox Church had to make a significant effort to spread the cult of the tsar, which also refers to Bessarabia as a component part of this colossus. And this is done through all existing measures and possibilities. This also refers to the publicity of books invoking the entire imperial family, to the publication of instructions and special regulations related to the manner and rules of performing divine services in honor of the emperor and the imperial family, as well as various actions aimed at promoting the imperial image.

Abstract:
Abstract An accurate Mechanical Earth Model (MEM) is of vital importance in tight gas reservoirs where hydraulic fracturing is the only way to produce hydrocarbons economically. The Barik tight gas reservoir is the main target in Khazzan and Ghazeer Fields at the Sultanate of Oman (Rylance et al., 2011). This reservoir consists of multiple low-permeability sandstone layers interbedded with marine shales. A good understanding of the fracture propagation in such a reservoir has a major effect on completion and fracturing design. The MEM derived from sonic logs and calibrated with core data needs to be further validated by independent measurements of the fracturing geometry. Multiple surveillance techniques have been implemented in the Barik reservoir to validate the MEM and to match observations from hydraulic fracturing operations. These techniques include closure interpretation using a wireline deployed formation testing assembly, the use of mini-frac injection tests with deployed bottomhole pressure gauges, execution of post injection time-lapse temperature logging, the injection of radioactive tracers, associated production logging, subsequent pressure transient analysis and other techniques. A cross-disciplinary team worked with multiple sources of data to calibrate the MEM with the purpose of delivering a high-confidence prediction of the created fracture geometry, which honors all available surveillance data. In turn, this validation approach provided a solid basis for optimization of the completion and fracturing design, in order to optimally exploit this challenging reservoir and maximize the economic returns being delivered. For example, combination of stress testing with radioactive tracers provided confidence in stress barriers in this multilayered reservoir. Pressure transient analysis allowed to calibrate mechanical model to match fracturing half-length that is contributing to production. This paper provides extensive surveillance examples and workflows for data analysis. Surveillance of this degree in the same well is uncommon because of the associated time and cost. However, it provides unique value for understanding the target reservoir. This paper demonstrates the Value Of Information (VOI) that can be associated with such surveillance and provides a concrete and practical example that can be used for the justification of future surveillance programs associated with the hydraulic fracturing operations.

Abstract:
Abstract For as long as we have been performing hydraulic fracturing, we have been trying to ensure that we stay out of undesirable horizons, potentially containing water and/or gas. The holy grail of hydraulic fracturing, an absolute control of created fracture height, has eluded the industry for more than 70 years. Of course, there have been many that have claimed solutions, but all the marketed approaches have at best merely created a delay to the inevitable growth and at worst been a snake-oil approach with little actual merit. Fundamentally, the applied techniques have attempted to delay or influence the underlying equations of net-pressure and stress variation; but having to ultimately honour them and by doing so then condemned themselves to limited success or outright failure. Fast forward to 2020, and a reassessment of the relative importance of height-growth constraint and what may have changed to help us achieve this. The development of unconventionals are focused on creating as much surface area as possible in micro/nano-Darcy environments, across almost any phase, but with typically poor line of sight to profit. However, the more valuable business of conventional oil and gas is working in thinner and thinner reservoirs with an often-deteriorating permeability, but with a significantly higher potential economic return. What unconventional has successfully delivered however, is a rapid deployment and acceleration in a range of completion technologies that were unavailable just a few years ago. We will demonstrate that these technologies potentially offer the capability of finally being able to control fracture height-growth. Consideration of a range of previously applied height-growth approaches will demonstrate how they attempted to fool or fudge height growth creation mechanisms. With this clarity, we can consider what advances in completion technology may offer in terms of delivering height growth control. We suggest that with the technology and approaches that are currently available today, that height-growth control is finally within reach. We will go on to describe a multi-well Pilot program, in deployment and execution in 2020/021 in Western Siberia; where billions of barrels remain to be recovered in thin oil-rim, low permeability sandstone reservoirs below gas or above water. A comprehensive assessment of the myriad of height-growth approaches that have been utilized over the last 70 years was performed, but in each case demonstrated the fallibility and limitations of each of these. However, rather than the interpretation that such control is not achievable, instead we will show a mathematically sound approach, along with field data and evidence that this is possible. The presentation will demonstrate that completion advances over the last 10 - 15 years make this approach a reality in the present day; and that broader field implementation is finally within reach.

Abstract:
Abstract Field development planning of gas condensate fields using numerical simulation has many aspects to consider that may lead to a significant impact on production optimization. An important aspect is to account for the effects of network constraints and process plant operating conditions through an integrated asset model. This model should honor proper representation of the fluid within the reservoir, through the wells and up to the network and facility. Obaiyed is one of the biggest onshore gas field in Egypt, it is a highly heterogeneous gas condensate field located in the western desert of Egypt with more than 100 wells. Three initial condensate gas ratios are existing based on early PVT samples and production testing. The initial CGRs as follows;160, 115 and 42 STB/MMSCF. With continuous pressure depletion, the produced hydrocarbon composition stream changes, causing a deviation between the design parameters and the operating parameters of the equipment within the process plant, resulting in a decrease in the recovery of liquid condensate. Therefore, the facility engineers demand a dynamic update of a detailed composition stream to optimize the system and achieve greater economic value. The best way to obtain this compositional stream is by using a fully compositional integrated asset model. Utilizing a fully compositional model in Obaiyed is challenging, computationally expensive, and impractical, especially during the history match of the reservoir numerical model. In this paper, a case study for Obaiyed field is presented in which we used an alternative integrated asset modeling approach comprising a modified black-oil (MBO) that results in significant timesaving in the full-field reservoir simulation model. We then used a proper de-lumping scheme to convert the modified black oil tables into as many components as required by the surface network and process plant facility. The results of proposed approach are compared with a fully compositional approach for validity check. The results clearly identified the system bottlenecks. The model can be used to propose the best tie-in location of future wells in addition to providing first-pass flow assurance indications throughout the field's life and under different network configurations. The model enabled the facility engineers to keep the conditions of the surface facility within the optimized operating envelope throughout the field's lifetime.
