Abstract:
As one of the Indonesian honors, puppetry arts are supposed to be socialized and preserved for future generations. It needs creative, interactive, and digital-based media due to the fast and unstoppable global changes. This research aimed to demonstrate the use of YouTube as one of the interesting and interactive media platforms in learning the puppetry arts independently for the duo puppeteer brothers, Prama and Rafi. By applying a qualitative research design with narrative analysis, this research had literally observed, virtually interviewed, and digitally documented a set of questionnaires to the duo puppeteer brothers. Several data were also collected from secondary sources such as YouTube channels and online news. Unlike other little puppeteers who learn the puppetry arts in a studio, the results revealed that the duo puppeteer brothers had never joined any puppetry arts studio. At the age of 16 and 13 years old, they have been learning the puppetry arts through YouTube channels for years to identify different styles of professional puppeteers in performing the puppets’ shows. Using YouTube channels, the duo puppeteer brothers enjoy the puppetry arts learning and could preserve the national noble values and culture.

Abstract:
This essay examines the work of Joan Colom, a Catalan photographer who has come to receive a welter of honors, including the National Prize in Photography, but whose career has been anything but easy and uninterrupted. Colom’s fame derives largely from Izas, rabizas y colipoterras, a photo-book produced in collaboration with Camilo José Cela that focuses on the prostitutes of the Barri Xino of Barcelona and that quickly acquired a cult status among members of the “divine left” critical of Franco’s morally smug regime. Addressing tensions between amateurism and professionalism, art and documentation, the studio and the street, and the image and the word, Fontcuberta presents Colom’s work as a radiography in which the camera serves as an instrument of political critique and the vibrancy and sordidness of street life come to the fore. Inimitable as the book is, it nonetheless allows for productive comparisons with more recent, feminist inflected work on streets, streetwalkers, and sex workers from beyond Barcelona: Susan Meiselas’s Carnival Strippers; Elisabeth B’s Das ist ja zum Peepen; Merry Alpern’s Dirty Windows, and Erika Langley’s The Lusty Lady.

Abstract:
For readers of this journal outside North America, the very concept of “honors education” may be confusing (since the word honours features in British and Commonwealth degree titles) or obscure (bringing to mind associations with aristocratic privilege or elitist competition). But in the United States the development of honors programs in colleges, and later honors colleges within universities, has been an important and growing trend of the last fifty years. Intended to recruit students of high intellectual aptitude, to serve their special needs, and to raise the academic profile of the host institution, honors programs have proliferated from a handful in the 1940s to more than 600, as catalogued in the most recent edition of Peterson's Guide to Honors Programs and Colleges (Digby, 2005). Even though the phrase “honors education” may have a peculiarly North American ring, the issues raised for those who teach highly talented university students are the same for Christian educators around the world, and very little has been published on the topic. With these essays we aim to identify some of the issues that are particularly relevant to Christian higher education for “honors” students, to explore how different theological traditions offer different pedagogical resources for teaching the gifted, and to describe some successful paradigms for cultivating hearts and minds toward service in the kingdom of God.

Robert Ashley’s Of Honour, edited in 1947 by Virgil B. Heltzel, has become a reference work in studies on honor in English literature, but we have known since 2016 that it is a translation plagiarism of Sebastián Fox Morcillo’s De honore (1556). In this paper the authors analyze and compare the three existing manuscripts of Of Honour (two of them recently identified), discuss Ashley’s possible intentions in producing it, and make a complete comparative study of De honore with Robert Ashley’s translation.

Abstract:
In these brief remarks, I sketch Aquinas’s account of humility, courage, and magnanimity. The nature of humility for Aquinas emerges nicely from his account of pride, and it also illuminates Aquinas’s view of magnanimity. For Aquinas, pride is the worst of the vices, and it comes in four kinds. The opposite of all these kinds of pride in a person is his disposition to accept that the excellences he has are all gifts from a good God and are all meant to be given back by being shared with others. Aquinas believes that all the virtues come together as a set. Consequently, a person who has humility also has courage. Aquinas takes the deepest kind of courage as a gift of the Holy Spirit. On his view, taken as a gift, courage manifests itself in a disposition to act on the settled conviction that one will be united to God in heaven when one dies. It is not easy to see how magnanimity could be a virtue if humility is. The solution is to see that for Aquinas the honor for the Christian virtue of magnanimity is not honor from human beings but honor from God. A person can have the virtue of humility and still strive for the greatest honors, as Aquinas sees it. The conclusion of Aquinas’s account of humility, courage, and magnanimity is this: it is morally obligatory to go for glory, because glory is a matter of being honored by God as faithful.

Full text
Abstract:
For my BFA Capstone exhibition Preying For a Miracle I analyzed the Biblical book of Job found in the Old Testament in relation to my own life. My interest in the Book of Job stems from a human desire to understand suffering, especially suffering that is unprovoked. At the beginning of the book of Job, Job is described as “blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil”. (Job 1:1) As the first chapter of the book progresses, Satan comes to God and presents a wager. Satan insinuates that Job is only faithful to God because God has “put a hedge around him”. (Job 1:9) Satan proposes that he can make Job curse God’s name if he removes the abundant blessings he has received. God accepts this wager and declares that as long as Job’s life is spared Satan can do with him as he wants, which begins a series of brutal trials. I found myself asking how can such violence and human suffering be justified?

Shaikh, Tayeba. "Cultural implications behind honor killings." Thesis, Union Institute and University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3637182.

Full text
Abstract:

Honor killings are perpetrated for a wide range of offenses in several parts of the world, including marital infidelity, pre-marital sex, flirting, and divorce. This study investigated the opinions of 18 to 22 Muslim American women, born in the United States, aged 25 to 40, of South Asian nationality, regarding their perspectives on honor killing within their religious and cultural communities. Through the use of autoethnography, my study additionally created a personal narrative through having read research, listened to recordings, as well as engagement in interactive interviews on the topic of honor killings. The intent of autoethnography was to acknowledge the inextricable link between the personal and the cultural and to make room for nontraditional forms of inquiry and expression (Wall, 2006). As a first generation Muslim American woman, I explored how personal cultural experiences may have impacted views and reactions to the subject of honor killings. Through structured interviews as well as self-reflective, interactive research process, I aimed to investigate Muslim American women's attitudes and beliefs surrounding this highly sensitive practice of killing women and girls in order to regain family honor.

In order to better understand attitudes and beliefs surrounding honor killings among Muslim women in the United States, this study utilized the methods of structured qualitative interviews with Muslim Americans, as well as an autoethnography portion to help understand and explain my own attitudes and cultural influences regarding this topic. Through the structured interviews, participants answered questions about demographics and discussed their opinions about honor killings.

Serander, Emy. "Vem är experten? : En kvalitativ studie i tre steg av hur två svenska tidningar använder sig av expertis och andra källor i artiklar om hedersrelaterat våld." Thesis, Södertörns högskola, Journalistik, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:sh:diva-35745.

Full text
Abstract:
This Master Thesis investigates how the Swedish Newspapers Expressen and DN are using sources and expertise in their portrayal of honour related violence. Which sources are they using, and in which way are these sources being used? 40 articles written between January 1 2017 – March 31 2018 have been chosen for a qualitative analysis step one. In the second step 10 articles have been chosen for a deeper analysis. In the third step three journalists have been interviewed about the articles they have been written in the subject honour-related violence. The method frame analysis have been used. The results of the qualitative analysis shows for example that it is many of the articles that have a strong dramaturgy, and that the use of emotive words are different in various type of articles. The study also shows that the use of sources and expertise are different in DN than in Expressen, and that the use of sources and expertis are remarkable different from other kinds of articles in journalism.

Phillips, Olivia H. "Marine Melodies: Traditional Scottish and Irish Mermaid and Selkie Songs as Performed by Top Female Vocalists in Contemporary Celtic Music." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2021. https://dc.etsu.edu/honors/622.

Full text
Abstract:
Mermaids and human-seal hybrids, called selkies, are a vibrant part of Celtic folklore, including ballad and song traditions. Though some of these songs have been studied in-depth, there is a lack of research comparing them to each other or to their contemporary renditions. This research compares traditional melodies and texts of the songs “The Mermaid,” “The Grey Selchie of Sule Skerry,” and “Hó i Hó i” to contemporary recordings by top female vocalists in Scottish and Irish music. The texts and melodies I have identified as “source” material are those most thoroughly examined by early ballad and folklore scholars. The source material for “The Grey Selchie of Sule Skerry” is a 1938 transcription by Otto Andersson. The source of notation and text for “The Mermaid” is the ballad’s A version from the Greig-Duncan Collection. The melody of “Hó i Hó i,” collected by folklorist David Thomson and published in 1954, serves as the third source version. Modern recordings included in the study are “The Mermaid” by Kate Rusby, “The Grey Selchie” by Karan Casey with Irish-American band Solas, and “Òran an Ròin,” a variant of “Hó i Hó i,” by Julie Fowlis. This study compares the forms, melodic contours, and texts of these variants, examining ways that contemporary recordings have maintained the integrity of traditional songs and ballads from which they are derived while adapting them to draw in a contemporary audience. The thesis illustrates the continued and evolving presence of mermaids and selkies in Scottish and Irish song.

Full text
Abstract:
This article seeks to uncover the historical trajectory of the notion of women as repositories of male honor in Indian society and whether there has been a change in the discourse. Through a historically oriented comparative study of two case studies it draws attention to the fact that this perception of women has made them extremely susceptible to sexual attacks from members of opposing communities. At the time of Partition India witnessed large scale religion-based rapes where men of one religion attempted to assert their dominance over another religious community by raping the women of that community. Today the use of rape as a means of power assertion is still prevalent but now it is upper caste men who are seeking to assert their dominance over lower caste communities. This article believes that a combination of legal and social dilemmas is the cause of this discourse that works against the safety of women.

Abstract:
This contribution aims to offer a study of the Italian adaptation of the Calderonian comedy Amor honor y poder by Angiola D'Orsi, in which the mechanisms that have allowed the recreation of the semantics of comedy, complex and strongly rooted in the stereotyped formulas of every literary tradition, are highlighted. Art comedian, dramatist, translator and highly experienced actor-manager (capocomico), Angiola D'Orsi shows her ability to acclimate the Spanish opera to the new context of reception, through an operation of mediation and interpretation of the two ideological and dramatic systems. Through the comparative analysis of the figures carrying comedy, characterized by linguistic and character stereotypes, we examine the ways in which their dramatic and cultural redefinition is carried out, closely linked to Italian theatrical practice and in accordance with the traditional mask of Zanni.

Abstract:
The relationship between design, material processes and their application has been a consistent theme in the teaching and research at the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (ESALA), at the University of Edinburgh. This work was strengthened and consolidated with the formation of the Architectural Research Workshop (ARW), and with its increased ability to produce large-scale prototypes, and has intensified in recent years as we rethink architectural pedagogy in response to the impacts of climate breakdown and its associated injustices. This paper presents a selection of courses and pedagogies, developed by academic staff at ESALA, that seek to take the environmental crisis as an opportunity to prototype novel construction materials, fabrication protocols, and architectural design methods, foregrounding an open-ended design process that privileges encounters with pre-existing materials over the architect’s own aspirations and ideas. In three teaching projects, and across several years and programmes, we outline an approach that emphasizes reuse and repurposing practices in relation to making (material processes and affordances) and making visible (diverting material flows; reclaiming values and valuing protocols). The three projects discussed—the MSc program “Material Practice,” and two studio options within the BA/MA under-graduate Architecture Honors Program (a third-year unit entitled “Radical Coauthorship,” and a fourth-year one entitled “No Blank Slate”)—encourage a direct engagement with material histories and ecologies (surveys and classifications) and fabrication processes (experiments and full-scale prototyping), demonstrating a probabilistic approach that draws and develops designs from latent and embodied opportunities. These approaches demand that work be not (only) assessed according to final outputs (the considered object or building as desirable outcome), but in relation to the technical platforms, material flows, supply chains, and labor practices associated with them, questioning our very assumptions and biases in the adjudication of meaning, beauty, and value.

Abstract:
Entrance examinations for postgraduate students are used by institutions to value their capacity to perform during their studies and excel in professional practice. The medical field leverages this practice for postgraduate students to select the best candidates to enter a rigorous program where participants are responsible for patients outcomes. Therefore it is important to analyze the quality and predictability of those examinations. The objective of this study was to analyze the predictability of the medical residency entrance examination for academic performance. As part of the analysis, we correlated the academic performance of the 2018 generation of graduates in thirteen medical specialties at Tecnologico de Monterrey, with 64 students' test scores. Academic performance was divided into students who graduated with honors and excellence (scores ≥90) and without honors. The admission test score has an 800-points total and was classified as high (≥600) and standard(≥550). The results show that from the participants, 37 had high entrance scores, of those 92% graduated with honors and excellence, and from the other 27 graduates which had a standard entrance score, 78% graduated with honors and excellence. The predictive positive value was 92% and the negative predictive value was 22%, whereas sensibility and specificity were calculated as 62% and 66%, respectively. Tecnologico de Monterrey's admission test had a predictive value in medical specialties academic performance whereas not in negative predictive value, which could evidentiate that the formation in the academic program itself contributed to students' professional and personal development. Factors like this might affect the sensibility and specificity values, further students would integrate more elements of performance scores to have added specificity and sensibility to assess and document performance Keywords: Higher education, Educational innovation, Medical education, Academic Performance, Residency programs, Admission test

Abstract:
In this study, rheological properties of five honey samples (Acacia, Citrus Blossom, Fynbos, Bluegum and Raw) were measured. Steady shear and dynamic rheological tests confirmed almost Newtonian behavior for all samples examined over the temperature range of 0–60° C. The water contents of honeys were between 15% and 23%. Fitting of the data in the temperature experiment, showed that primarily expected Arrhenius model is not the best model. Excluding the Raw honey that was possible to be fitted to the said model, the other honey samples were best fitted to a Hyperbolic Tangent model. For the fitted Raw honey however, the activation energy was evaluated to be 95783 J/kg mole. While some rather exceptional viscoelastic properties were observed for the samples, the thixotropic effects were virtually nonexistent. These findings can provide insight into the microstructural, physiological and sensory changes. Also, the study completes a series of studies on rheology of honeys conducted worldwide.

Abstract:
This paper describes an interdisciplinary approach to a creative arts honours collaboration that set aside a conventional approach to facilitate an experimental methodology to support greater creative innovation and knowledge acquisition. This paper examines an honours study which explored analogue and digital hybridity in board game design. The methodology employed a practice-led research approach with the Double Diamond design process model used to structure the study. A structured and critical reflective practice model was used to identify and analyse the thinking present within the creative project. A core innovation of this approach was the shift from a focus on a finalised project consisting of a separate creative work and critical thesis, to a study where the critical and creative work were still separate, but included a greater focus on process and prototyping as a means to engage with design principles, rather than a finalised product or artefact. Lessons from the collaboration are identified to inform interdisciplinary honours in the future.

"The Sabriyah Mauddud Dynamic Model Rebuild – Tackling the History Match of a Giant and Complex Carbonate Reservoir Through a Tailored-Made Sector-Centered History Match Approach." In SPE Reservoir Characterisation and Simulation Conference and Exhibition. SPE, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.2118/212586-ms.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract This work presents the application of a fit-for-purpose history match workflow to a giant and geologically complex carbonate reservoir with over 60 years of production/injection history and 600+ wells. The target was to deliver, within schedule and spec, a high-quality sizeable model (15+ million grid blocks) that honored the underlying geologic characteristics and reproduced the distinctive production mechanisms present across the different regions of the reservoir, while keeping parametrization of uncertainties at a manageable level. Practical implementation routes were applied to efficiently translate key reservoir plumbing elements and other identified subsurface uncertainties into dynamic modeling components that could be investigated over large uncertainty ranges via Assisted History Matching (AHM) tools. To manage the history match process of this vast and mature reservoir, a sophisticated and custom-tailored sector-centered modeling scheme was adopted based on a "Divide & Conquer" approach. This tactic divides the big history match problem into smaller more manageable pieces, allowing for simultaneous history match of different sectors by different engineers while having frequent reassembling of sectors into a full-field model to ensure alignment, preserve consistent reservoir behaviors, and update (flux) boundary conditions. The iterative sector-based history match scheme applied to the giant field dynamic model made it possible to achieve a good history match within the given time and IT resources available to carry out the history match. The new dynamic model respects the conceptual understanding of the reservoir behavior and honors the available subsurface and production data of approximately 80% of the individual wells within the desired history match criteria. The use of the sector modeling workflow approach in a large full field model, allowed for faster turnaround of results for history matching purposes. The applied workflow also demonstrated that achieving a good history match in the individual sectors also resulted in a good history match for the full field model, achieved in a faster way. The final model respects the conceptual understanding of reservoir behavior as well as honors the available performance data at a scale which allows not only more reliable production forecasts but also model-based pattern-level waterflood optimization and its use for well location optimization (WLO) studies. The model supports development planning and reservoir management decisions (20+ new wells drilled annually), with waterflooding aiming to increase ultimate recovery by more than 20%. The methodology allowed significant time-savings to deliver the dynamic model within a relatively short schedule (~9 months) and required quality specifications. The successful application of the custom-made history match workflow is currently being replicated in other reservoirs of similar scale and complexity in North Kuwait and could also be applied to other massive reservoirs around the world. This work also illustrates a good example of achieving excellent HM results while keeping the parametrization of uncertainties as practical as possible.

Abstract:
This study aims to develop understanding of the interactions between perpetrators of coercive control and intimate partner stalking, and their victims, and how these interactions may be linked to escalating and de-escalating risk of serious harm or homicide. This is a qualitative study, and we interpret our data using the lens of coercive control as described and understood in UK definitions, and the work of Stark (2009). The overall aim is to use the principles of temporal sequencing to organise the behavioural data into a sequence and organise the sequence into stages that represent potential escalating risk - the further along the sequence, the higher the risk of serious harm, with opportunities at every stage to halt the progression. Three pilot tools were developed for professionals in the areas of Intimate Partner Homicide, Domestic Abuse related Suicide and Honour Killing.

Huang, Tao, and Venkatesh Merwade. Developing Customized NRCS Unit Hydrographs (Finley UHs) for Ungauged Watersheds in Indiana. Purdue University, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.5703/1288284317644.

Full text
Abstract:
The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS, formerly the Soil Conservation Service, SCS) unit hydrograph (UH) is one of the most commonly used synthetic UH methods for hydrologic modeling and engineering design all over the world. However, previous studies have shown that the application of the NRCS UH method for some ungauged watersheds in the state of Indiana produced unrealistic flood predictions for both the peak discharge and the time to peak. The objective of this work is to customize the NRCS UH by analyzing the role of its two key parameters, namely, the peak rate factor (PRF) and the lag time, in creating the runoff hydrograph. Based on 120 rainfall-runoff events collected from 30 small watersheds in Indiana over the past two decades, the observed UHs are derived and the corresponding PRF and lag time are extracted. The observed UHs in Indiana show that the mean value of PRF is 371, which is lower than the standard PRF of 484, and the NRCS lag time equation tends to underestimate the “true” lag time. Moreover, a multiple linear regression method, especially the stepwise selection technique, is employed to relate the NRCS UH parameters to the most appropriate geomorphic attributes extracted from the study watersheds. Both the statewide and regional regression models show that the main channel slope is a major factor in determining the PRF and lag time. A customized Indiana unit hydrograph, referred as Finley UH to honor David Finley who inspired this study, is derived with updated parameters and the Gamma function. Validation results show that the Finley UH provides more reliable and accurate predictions in terms of the peak discharge and the time to peak than the original NRCS UH for the watersheds in Indiana.

Abstract:
The review is about textbook on television and radio communication for students, teachers of faculties and departments of journalism, as well as journalists-practitioners, prepared by the author’s team edited by Vasyl Lyzanchuk. Textbok absorbed some considerations and conclusions from previous theoretical developments, which found a new meaning here, deeper argumentation, supplemented by many interesting observations that correspond to the spirit of the time, the innovations that have appeared in recent years in the media space of Ukraine. The textbook has ten sections, each of which is designed to enrich the student with knowledge of television and radio communications, teach him or her all that a media professional should know and be able to apply it in practice. The titles of the sections indicate their practical orientation: «Basic methodical measures of functioning of information radio and television genres», «How we analyze, interpret, explain facts, events, phenomena», «Features of the creation of artistic programs on radio and television» and others. All sections of the textbook are meaningfully connected and constructed in such a way as to provide students with the opportunity to gradually, step by step to deepen their theoretical and practical knowledge of television and radio communications. This is undoubtedly the merit of the authors of the edition. The student will benefit from the numerous examples of television and radio materials prepared by the students themselves. Their creative work should convince that this work can serve as a stimulus for creative work for future journalists during their years of study. In addition to professional competence, as rightly emphasized in the textbook by Professor Vasyl Lyzanchuk, “It is very important to form in students, future journalists, socio-national competence, deep understanding of the essence of freedom of speech and responsibility for the content of the spoken word and image, to develop the belief that they are active participants in the Ukrainian state-building processes, and not intermediaries or repeaters of information”. It should be noted that the educational element is present throughout the textbook starting with the first chapter, historical (author Professor Ivan Krupskyi). While studying this textbook, students should realize that from the honor of journalists, their dignity, patriotism depends on the honor, authority, bright name of Ukraine, its future; that their assertion of Ukrainian national identity is the key to further prosperity of our state.

Full text
Abstract:
Professor Leslie R. Marchant was a Western Australian historian of international renown. Richly educated as a child in political philosophy and critical reason, Marchant’s understandings of western political philosophies were deepened in World War Two when serving with an international crew of the merchant navy. After the war’s end, Marchant was appointed as a Protector of Aborigines in Western Australia’s Depart of Native Affairs. His passionate belief in Enlightenment ideals, including the equality of all people, was challenged by his experiences as a Protector. Leaving that role, he commenced his studies at The University of Western Australia where, in 1952, his Honours thesis made an early case that genocide had been committed in the administration of Aboriginal people in Western Australia. In the years that followed, Marchant became an early researcher of modern China and its relationship with the West, and won respect for his archival research of French maritime history in the Asia-Pacific. This work, including the publication of France Australe in 1982, was later recognised with the award of a French knighthood, the Chevalier d’Ordre National du Mèrite, and his election as a fellow to the Royal Geographical Society. In this festschrift, scholars from The University of Notre Dame Australia appraise Marchant’s work in such areas as Aboriginal history and policy, Westminster traditions, political philosophy, Australia and China and French maritime history.

Abstract:
Subject of the article’s study – journalism of Ukrainian diaspora publications on the topic of liberation struggle of Ukrainian nation. The author emphasizes on variations of such a struggle, in particular on traditions of militarism and pacifism. A lot of Ukrainians who lived outside of Ukraine, because of third wave of emigration, used to believe that the USA will start another world war, will deal with the USSR and in this way will help Ukraine become independent. Similar thoughts were fundamental thesis of so-called «liberation conception». Such theories and hopes were outlined in columns of such magazines as «Visti Combatanta», «Vyzvolnyi Shliakh». But another part of political emigrants, concentrated around OUN (w) and URDP, positions of which were represented in such publications as «Ukrainskyi samostiynyk» and «Nashi posytsii», problem of Ukrainian independence tried not to deceive to war between the USA and the USSR and considered nonviolent methods of government change. Similar thoughts had the authors of «Suchasnist» and «Lysty do Pryiateliv». Time and historical realities showed that were right those journalists who believed in evolutionary, not revolutionary, theory of state development. Ukraine was able to become independent peacefully after the USSR decay and creation of sovereign states. Among this, modern Ukrainian society still lacks respect to Ukrainian army, nurturing of traditions of military valor, honor and justice, to which even diaspora journalists paid attention in the previous century.

Abstract:
Recent studies of the Covid-19 pandemic have found that millions in Bangladesh fell into poverty during this time, and they were unable to recover to their pre-pandemic economic position. This study draws on qualitative panel data collected from 39 new-poor households in Khulna, coping with pandemic-induced shocks and attempting to come out of poverty. How are the new poor attempting to recover: what strategies are they using and what constraints do they face? What are the implications for governance of their efforts? Based on their pre-pandemic economic conditions, we divide these new-poor households into two categories: those that were ‘never poor’ and ‘the vulnerable non-poor’ households. All the new-poor households we engaged with used a variety of strategies to cope and recover which included financial strategies such as borrowing money, livelihood strategies such as having multiple occupations, cost-reduction strategies such as decreasing expenditure on health and education, and social safety strategies such as accessing social protection. The main constraints that these households faced were many. These included their inability to access loans and access finances, limited access to social protection, lack of trust and expectations from the local government to provide services to aid their recovery, and social norms around honour and shame which limited their ability to seek assistance or have female members of the household engage in an income-generating activity. Most ‘never-poor’ households were recovering while most of the vulnerable households were stuck. Governance implications of the experiences of these households include the state playing a bigger role in supporting the new poor, limiting the role intermediaries and informal networks play in how social protection is provided, strengthening practices that build trust in local government, and tackling corruption.

Miller, Odin. Winter travel, access, and changing snow and ice conditions in Alaska’s Copper River basin. National Park Service, May 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/2298854.

Full text
Abstract:
In Alaska’s Copper River Basin, less reliable snow and ice conditions, increasingly common in recent years, have presented challenges for winter activities such as trapping, hunting, and gathering firewood. While previous studies have drawn similar conclusions elsewhere in Alaska and the Circumpolar North, these impacts have not been explored in the Copper Basin, specifically. Data for this project were collected using a set of nine oral interviews, conducted with local residents who have extensive knowledge and experience with winter activities in the Copper River Basin. In past decades, crossing rivers was less treacherous and could be done earlier in the fall and later in the spring. During midwinter, travel across or along rivers and streams mostly tended to be predictable, with some exceptions. Over the course of several decades, people have observed large-scale changes in ice conditions. One of the most significant outcomes has been the difficulty this has created for trappers and others trying to access the east side of the Copper River during the winter months. Some Elders have noticed these changes beginning as long ago as the 1970s, or even earlier. Interview Respondents have described significant changes in winter snow conditions occurring since the mid-20th century, although these have been more inconsistent and irregular than corresponding changes in the ice conditions. Decreased snowpacks—especially during the early season—have increasingly presented an obstacle to winter access along the snowmachine trails used by trappers and others. Additionally, several interview respondents reported that increased shrub-growth had made it more difficult to travel across the winter landscape, requiring them to cut trails through the forest—something that never used to be necessary. Finally, several socio-economic and technological factors have interacted with climate change, impacting patterns of winter use of the Copper River Basin during the past several decades. This report was produced for Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve through a co-stewardship agreement with the Ahtna Intertribal Resource Commission, whose mission is to honor and integrate traditional knowledge and values through stewardship that is innovative and respectful of the land for all generations.

Söderberg, Linda, Stefan Palm, Caroline Ek, and Johan Östergren. Department of Aquatic Resources, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.54612/a.1tnjl9jc1a.

Full text
